In a recent Los Gatan article, titled “Town’s effort to acknowledge earli est residents fraught with challenges,” journalist Drew Penner was attempt ing to shed light on the efforts of the Town of Los Gatos to acknowledge its less-than-inclusive telling of its own history. But the piece, which discussed how Los Gatos is seeking to correct that error by mentioning the “origi nal inhabitants” through a ceremo nial land acknowledgment, became tangled up with questions of tribal legitimacy.Mr.Penner opines that there is disagreement over who should be ac knowledged; he quoted statements by staff and Council members illustrating the confusion confronting Bay Area municipalities about what constitutes a historic Native American tribe and what does not. Often public agencies fear being labeled as “non-inclusive” or accused of “silencing Indigenous voices.” That was clear in the com ments of Los Gatos’ officials. Rather than completing a thorough investi gation, the Town seems frozen in fear of negative publicity. As a result, Los Gatos appears willing to allow any individual of Indian descent to claim territory and start demanding respect andCorrectingcompensation.liesand misinformation is the only path towards justice. Muwekma has been transparent and open, publishing genealogy and other records, so journalists, academ ics, and public agencies can do their due diligence. Charlene Nijmeh is the chairwoman of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Muwekma, on the other hand, can demonstrate our links with the past. Phoebe Apperson Hearst and her hus band, U.S. Senator George Hearst, purchased our Alisal Rancheria in the 1880s. Later, she funded the An thropology department at UC Berke ley, inviting renowned anthropologist Alfred L. Kroeber to interview our elders still living there. Our landless tribal community was included in the federal Indian censuses of 1900 and 1910, and the Special Indian Census of 1905-06. We were placed under the jurisdiction of Special California In dian Agents—and later, the Reno and Sacramento superintendents.
Los Gatos appears willing to allow any individual of Indian descent to claim territory and start demanding respect and compensation.

The message was echoed by our tribal elders—who enrolled with the Bureau of Indian Affairs under the 1928 Cali fornia Indian Jurisdictional Act.
The Town’s elected officials must make a distinction between Native American tribes that can demonstrate continuity and recently-created en tities. Tamien Nation never existed prior to December 2020 and was organized by Ms. Quirina Luna Geary around the time she resigned from her role as a councilmember with the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band. But the important thing is we used those struggles to get better and took that into the Liberty game, which was a huge bounceback.”
Boyd is coming off a stellar 2021 season in which he threw for 1,887 yards, averaging 9.7 yards per comple tion. One of Boyd’s greatest attributes is his even-keel temperament, which was best displayed in a season-open ing 28-14 loss to Southern California power Corona del Mar.

The Los Gatos High senior will be playing for some team next year, and anyone around the Wildcats’ baseball and football programs will agree that college will be grateful to have him.
No kidding. The Wildcats rang Lib erty to the tune of 31-0 in a Week Two contest, and Boyd finished 14-of-18 for 221“Afteryards.that game, I felt really sat isfied with what happened,” he said. “Some games are tough and you don’t throw many completions, but every thing was rolling in that game. “Emilianotouchdowns.inmy opinion is the best running back in CCS,” Boyd said. “So as great as it was for me to not get hit at all (against Liberty), we have to get him going because he’s a huge part of our offense.”

Jake Boyd isn’t exactly feeling the love quite yet from four-year college programs, but that’s OK.

We played probably 15, 16 guys on defense through the first three quar ters (against Liberty) and more after that. We had nine guys running out there on the defensive line.

luxury down the road is the depth we have because we can rotate guys through. We had constant pressure on their quarterback and often times it was only rushing three guys and playing eight deep in the secondary. When you can provide pressure with only three, that makes it tough on the quarterback. By and large, any time your defense pitches a shutout, that’s a good night for sure.”
The Los Gatos defense has posted two consecutive shutouts and has been pretty much on point since the start of the season. Strong safety Landon Heard has been absolutely sensational, collecting an interception in each of the threeSophomoregames.

“I have really good relations with my grandparents on both sides, so I’m really fortunate for that,” he said. “As much as they’ve gotten older, they still support me in every way. It’s a positive and a healthy thing to have a good re lationship with them.”

Boyd has developed in every phase of the game, from reading defenses to going through his progressions to hav ing a sense of the pass rush and when to pass it or run with it.

Boyd played two years for the Pop Warner Longhorns football team before entering high school. He never played quarterback until he became the starter on the freshmen team in his ninth-grade year. After an outstanding baseball season in the spring in which he pitched and was one of the section’s best center field ers in his first year at the position, Boyd took a brief break before gearing up for summer football workouts, which serve as a crucial component in a player’s de velopment and on the recruiting front.
Boyd has done a lot of reflecting lately on which sport he would play in college if he had to pick one, as is the case with most multi-sport standouts.

DISCOVER LOST GATOS
The terrible red monster
AFTERMATH The 1901 Livery Stable Fire ravaged West Main Street and leveled nearly 60 buildings.
Telephone messages and tele grams pleading for help were sent to San Jose and San Francisco, but it was early Sunday morning and no response was received. Hot dry winds fanned the flames, and the fire trav eled quickly up University Avenue. It claimed the Episcopal Church and almost destroyed the schoolhouse. The school was eventually saved, as was the wooden Main Street bridge, but everything in between lay in ru ins. The winds continued to spread ash for days after the fire burned itself

In 1901, the most devastating fire of all—the “Livery Stable Fire”—rav aged both sides of West Main Street between the bridge and the railroad tracks, leveling nearly 60 buildings. As one newspaper stated, “The entire business section of the town was wiped out.” The fire might have con sumed the Hotel Lyndon as well as many of the buildings on Santa Cruz Avenue had it not been for an easterly breeze and the open space around the train
Los Gatos was plagued by a dif ferent breed of fire in its early years. Almost all buildings during those days were made of wood and lit by gas. The addition of hot dry winds in the sum mer created a perfect recipe for disas ter. A dozen major fires started in the downtown business district between 1891 and 1901.
On Sunday evening, July 26, 1891, a ferocious blaze destroyed most of the businesses on East Main Street.
Do you remember when Septem ber was the peak of fire season? That term has little meaning these days as fires torch our bone-dry landscape throughout the year. It’s heartbreak ing when isolated wildfires—mostly caused by lightning or power line sparks—spread to populated areas, turning entire towns like Paradise into an apocalyptic wasteland.
Alan Feinberg, Contributor
panded dramatically after it reached gunpowder stored in a nearby tunnel. Both of the town’s new fire brigades responded to the call, but there was insufficient water to stop the confla gration. Within three hours, the most popular businesses were gone, includ ing the charming Arlington Hotel with its ornate tower and turrets.
Thedepot.blaze began in a bakery during the middle of the night on Oct. 13, 1901 and spread quickly to Tisdale’s Stables on Front Street (now Monte bello Way). There were no casualties other than eight horses, but many people were injured either by flame or in one of the numerous explosions.
Our community originally relied on volunteer bucket brigades, but they were no match for rapidly spreading blazes. In 1888 the newly incorporated town passed an ordinance to provide for a dedicated Fire Department with two volunteer Hose Companies (one on each side of the Main Street bridge)
and a Hook and Ladder Company. Un fortunately, the “terrible red monster” still could not be contained.
Theout.terribly destructive fire of 1901 provided the impetus for the devel opment of the commercial district along N. Santa Cruz Avenue, which many now consider to be the “main street” in town.
When it came time to rebuild, brick was used to replace many of the fire-prone wood buildings in order to limit future blazes. The stone and brick Beckwith Block (which now houses Southern Kitchen) is one such building that rose from the ashes of the Cartridge Fire. Other businesses that burned to the ground chose to move to the West side of town, only to suffer the same fate 10 years later.
