Launching in September 2025, Metro Prep’s GENIUS Program is Toronto’s first high school biotechnology curriculum. This program provides students with hands-on experience using advanced technologies such as DNA sequencing, PCR, and genetic engineering. Through expert-led lessons and practical lab work, students will gain the skills needed to succeed in post-secondary education and careers in biotechnology, genetics, medicine, and related fields.

Introduction to Biotechnology
(Grade 9/10)
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course introduces students to the rapidly growing field of biotechnology and its impact on industries such as health care, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. Students will explore topics such as DNA structure, gene manipulation, and the ethical implications of genetic engineering. Through hands-on projects and simulations, students will gain foundational skills in molecular biology and biotechnology.

Genetics & Molecular Biology (Grade 11)
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course delves into the principles of genetics and molecular biology, emphasizing biotechnological applications. Students will explore how genes control traits, investigate modern techniques such as DNA sequencing, and study real-world uses of genetics in fields like medicine and agriculture. This course also includes a strong focus on hands-on labs, where students will apply genetic concepts in practical settings.

Biotechnology & Ethics (Grade 12)
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In this advanced course, students will explore the latest innovations in biotechnology and their ethical, societal, and environmental implications. Topics include gene therapy, cloning, and the production of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Students will engage in critical discussions about the use of biotechnology in solving global issues, while completing advanced laboratory exercises and research projects.

Bioinnovation Capstone Project (Grade 12)
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This capstone project allows students to apply the knowledge gained throughout the GENIUS Program to a real-world biotechnology challenge. Working individually or in teams, students will design, execute, and present a project that addresses a specific problem in the biotechnology field. Mentorship from biotechnology professors and industry experts will guide students through the process.

• Apply by Mail, Fax, Email, or In Person: Download the PDF application form at www.metroprep.com/apply/download and submit it with the required documents via mail, fax, email, or drop it off in person.
Required Documents:
• Most recent report card
• Year-end report cards from previous two academic years
• Birth certificate or passport
Once we receive your application, we will contact you to schedule an interview. This is an opportunity for us to get to know you and your child better, and for you to learn more about our school.
After reviewing all documentation, test results (if applicable), and the interview, we will notify you of our decision. If accepted, you will be invited to submit completed registration forms to secure your child’s placement. 4 1 2 3 4
Grades 7–9:
Students may be required to complete an entrance exam (optional with completed SSAT). A strong personal statement explaining how the applicant will benefit from and contribute to the MetroPrep community may exempt them from the entrance exam.
Grades 10–12:
Admission is based on current academic records.
