“When you look back on a lifetime and think of what has been given to the world by your presence, your fugitive presence, inevitably you think of your art, whatever it may be, as the gift you have made to the world in acknowledgment of the gift you have been given, which is the life itself... That work is not an expression of the desire for praise or recognition, or prizes, but the deepest manifestation of your gratitiude for the gift of life.”

Making the Most of It’s always easier to get to your destination with a little direction. We sought out the experts in their fields for some guidance and inspiration to accomplish our most meaningful and sought after goals this year.

Health &

FITNESS

GOAL: Optimize health, fitness and wellbeing

EXPERT: Dr. Karen Koffler, Medical Director of Health & Wellness at Carillon Miami Beach

KAREN’S ADVICE: The hustle and bustle of everything leading up to the New Year can be quite disorienting. What we need to do is find our focal point, our center and purpose in embracing this New Year – a fresh start. Each year we set goals – often unattainable – that end up being left in the first weeks of January. Instead focus on the little things – direct your attention to gratitude. Being grateful for good health, loved ones, and taking a moment to breathe all of that in will help optimize your wellbeing instantly. Getting active is a very popular resolution for New Year’s. But instead of trying to do something drastic, make sure the decisions you make to get fitness into your regimen are realistic and attainable, and take it step by step.

Understand what will work best for not only your schedule but also for your body. Get outside – even if it’s cold out. Choose a winter getaway on the mountains or on the beach so that there are plenty of outdoor activities to participate in – all while having fun and creating lasting memories in the process. This will not only optimize fitness, but will cause a domino effect on your health! Finally, don’t just set goals, set appointments with your doctors and health practitioners. Let experts help guide you toward your optimal health and well-being.

METROPOLITANLUXE.COM | WINTER 2016

The Pursuit of HAPPINESS GOAL: Create happiness & balance in everyday life EXPERT: Valerie Burton, Personal and Executive Coach and Founder of The Coaching and Positive Psychology (CaPP) Institute VALORIE’S ADVICE: Habits That Are Sabotaging Your Happiness!

Happiness is the only thing we pursue for its own sake. Everything else, we pursue because we think it will make us happier. Or at the very least, less sad. But research shows that we are actually poor predictors of what will make us happy. In fact, you might even be sabotaging your happiness. See if any of these sound familiar - common habits that are sabotaging your happiness:

Comparing “up”

It’s hard not to compare “up.” Just turn on the television and you are bombarded with perfect people in shows and advertisements that send you this message: What you have is not enough. Who you are is not enough. What you do is not enough. When you constantly compare yourself to situations and people who seemingly have more than you, your happiness is bound to decline. Be balanced.

Lost Priorities

“Don’t settle.”It is advice I’ve shared often. I believe that when it comes to your biggest dreams, when you stop hoping, you start settling. But that standard doesn’t apply to every area of your life. It may sound counterintuitive, but sometimes, you need to settle. In fact, global research on happiness shows that the very happiest people have lower expectations about what they believe their lives should look like. It isn’t that they have low expectations. It isn’t that they are unambitious. It is that their expectations do not constantly outpace their reality, whether they are trying to get the housework done or land the big client. When continuing to strive for something more or better steals energy that would be better used for a higher priority, it’s time to settle. When it comes to what you want and need for the most meaningful parts of your life – a career, a spouse, what part of the country (or world!) you want to live in – set high standards and go for it. But perfectionism and endless ambition come at a price, and the reward is rarely as sweet as you had imagined. Be willing to relax a little when it comes to your expectations that don’t impact your main priorities. You’ve only got so much energy. Conserve it for the goals that matter most. Choose happiness over perfection.

GIVING BACK

GOAL: Give back to the community; get involved in a meaningful way. EXPERT: Linda Jacobs Davis, CEO, Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership (CVNL) LINDA’S ADVICE: While the holiday season is marked by a spirit of giving, charitable contributions and volunteer service does not need to be seasonal. The beginning of the year is a great time to reflect on our values, connections and action plans for the coming year. Identifying the things you are most passionate about is a great place to start. What issue or cause is most meaningful to you? Or, if you are lacking a passion for a particular cause, what issue would you like to learn more about or lend your skills to? If you feel strongly about animals, for instance, connect with your local shelter or find out if there is an organization in your community who advocates for animals. Perhaps you benefitted from the skills of a tutor when you were a student and want to explore giving back in a similar way. Start by looking inward and let what you find most compelling lead you to action. 32

METROPOLITANLUXE.COM | WINTER 2016

Volunteering is the most hands-on way to connect with a cause that is meaningful to you. Volunteers bring meals to the homebound, help with habitat restoration, serve on nonprofit boards, share the gifts of art and music with those who are isolated, and travel to areas of natural disasters to provide relief. The experience can be life-changing for all involved and serve important individual and community needs. It is not uncommon for the volunteer to feel like they are getting more out of the experience than the organization or person being served. Making a financial contribution is another way to give back and live out what you most value. There are nonprofit organizations doing all sorts of important work locally and globally. Your financial partnership with such organizations is a valuable investment toward the common good. Most communities have a volunteer hub and/or nonprofit resource center that can help with making connections and finding opportunities. Take time to identify concrete ways you wish to contribute and connect with those who will help you fulfill your goal of giving back. Your acts of giving will have a big impact.

MADE in ITALY NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale Paints Bellissima Portrait of Italian Couture at the Height of Fashion, 1945 - 1968 BY MARGERY GORDON

Installation image of Bellissima: Italy and High Fashion 1945-1968 at the Villa Reale in Monza, Italy. Photo by Luca Palmer

A

n Italian Renaissance rarely heralded by American institutions will grace the Gulf Coast this season in a museum exhibition revealing the roots of a 20thcentury cultural rebirth that transformed a country devastated by World War II into an international fashion capital. “Bellissima: Italy and High Fashion 1945-1968”, at the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale from February 7 through June 5, weaves together threads from art, architecture, film, theater and photography with the distinctive designs they inspired to unravel the rise of an alta moda that rivaled haute couture.

“The exhibition is presented within a broad historical context that looks at the role fashion, art and cinema played in rebuilding Italy and its economy after the war and how these disciplines forged Italy’s contemporary image,” says Bonnie Clearwater, the museum’s director and chief curator. The show’s timeline is bracketed by the end of World War II and the establishment of ready-to-wear divisions at high fashion houses, “the period when Italy was able to successfully create the first major fashion center to challenge the dominance of Paris.”

This exhibition also emphasizes the role America played in this postwar development as part of the rebuilding of wartorn Europe and stabilizing its economy,” Clearwater explains. From 1947 to ’52, the U.S. government provided nearly $13 billion (valued at ten times that figure according to 2015 currency equivalents) to 16 nations through the European Recovery Program developed by George Marshall soon after the general who led the victorious troops was appointed secretary of state by President Harry Truman. “The Marshall Plan was instrumental in providing financial aid to invest in the Italian textile factories so they could be up and running again and provide much-needed jobs for skilled labor.” American capitalists and consumers matched those funds with a newfound fondness for luxury imports and European styles that bolstered Italian brands with a vote of confidence motivated by personal preference rather than strategic generosity. “The American department stores, satisfying the newly emerged market of emancipated American women, were key in promoting Italian style,” Clearwater points out. “... this exhibition will provide considerable revelations about the designers that established and defined the timeless styles and the fine tailoring and craftsmanship that became the hallmark of Italian fashion and design.”

“This will be a new perspective for the general audience in the U.S. and provides a larger context for understanding the role fashion plays in international trade and how ‘Made in Italy’ became an enduring quality brand.” South Florida audiences will recognize the alluring combination of unabashed femininity, elegant silhouettes and consummate detailing that characterize more than 230 vintage garments, even if they don’t recognize the names of many important designers included alongside legends like Fendi, Valentino and Emilio Pucci. “Italian fashion has not received the attention that French and British designers have received in US museum exhibitions, so this exhibition will provide considerable revelations about the designers that established and defined the timeless styles and the fine tailoring and craftsmanship that became the hallmark of Italian fashion and design.” A fashion show would not be complete without the bold accessories that complete the look, especially one from a country famous for its handbags, shoes, hats and jewelry. Bellissima will arrive bedecked in vintage baubles from Bulgari, presenting sponsor of the exhibition. “Their distinctive designs were an essential part of the look and glamour of postwar Italy. These jewels played a key role in the international popularization of Italian design, as many major movie stars such as Elizabeth Taylor accessorized in Bulgari and their photos appeared in fan magazines and luxury lifestyle magazines,” says Clearwater. The NSU Museum secured a precious loan from a private collection: Elizabeth Taylor’s own platinum pendant earrings with fancy diamond drops in a yellow hue dangling from diamond clusters (circa 1962), an exclusive addition to the third iteration of an exhibition that debuted at MAXXI National Museum of the XXI Century Arts in Rome in December 2014 before traveling to the Villa Reale in Monza on the outskirts of Milan. Bellissima makes a grand entrance on February 5 with a gala, also sponsored by Bulgari, that celebrates both the exhibition’s opening and the 30th anniversary of the NSU Museum’s

building by Edward Larrabee Barnes. “The exhibition design will highlight the museum’s architecture with its curving walls and white terrazzo floors,” promises Clearwater. “We want visitors to feel as though they are immersed in the Roman Colosseum so that they experience how the past is always present in Italy.” The exhibition’s sophisticated synthesis of history and multiple art forms reflects a trend among museums that have been broadening the scope of their mission to illuminate the interconnected nature of contemporary culture with nuanced analyses and dynamic installations that map out how crosspollination among creative fields manifests in diverse facets of high art, popular culture and social change. “At NSU Art Museum, we emphasize cross-disciplinary exhibitions,” notes Clearwater. “Bellissima was particularly appealing as it focuses on the post-World War II period, one of our areas of concentration.” The new show highlights influential figures like Lucio Fontana, the father of Arte Povera who sent shockwaves through the global art world when he pierced the picture plane, by pairing one of his groundbreaking slashed canvases with a piece from Mila Schön’s mid-1960s collection directly inspired by his radical act. Scenes of starlets impeccably styled by Italian costume designers capture glorious visions from the avant-garde films of Federico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni and Luchino Visconti – offering dramatic testimony of the enduring impact that Cinecittà, the Roman hub of Italian cinema, had on the international image of La Dolce Vita – and the mainstream American directors that followed in their wake, setting up what came to be known as “Hollywood on the Tiber.” Bellissima follows Revolution of the Eye: Modern Art and the Birth of American Television – which spanned the late 1940s to the mid-1970s and included examples from traditional forms of fine art as well as graphic design, advertising and architecture. Bellissima overlaps with the last two weeks of The Indestructible Lee Miller, in which the former model’s

photographs of European fashion and devastation during World War II hang above cases displaying their published format in issues of British and American Vogue. Photographs from Italian and American magazines underscore key themes in Bellissima, illustrating factors that contributed to the cultural relevance and international popularity of alta moda. Taking models out of the rarefied chambers of ateliers and sterile production studios to pose them on picturesque city streets, in historical sites and at museums capitalized on Italy’s iconic architecture and artistic heritage. “The idea of the Dolce Vita, our landscapes, our cities, Italian food, design and craftmanship – these were all elements that appealed to the Americans and let us became internationally recognized,” says Maria Luisa Frisa, a critic and director of the Degree in Fashion Design and Multimedia Arts at the IUAV University of Venice. She and Stefano Tonchi, editor-in-chief of W Magazine, researched this crucial period for nearly two years in collaboration with MAXXI Art Director Anna

Mattirolo and the Alta Roma association. “Our qualities were defined through the external gaze of the United States. It was important and it’s still important today because it helped us to re-consider our selling points, our strengths, our cultural and economic values.” Editorial shoots in urban locations also demonstrated how well new silhouettes suited middle-class career women empowered by their unprecedented engagement in the wartime economy and a loosening of social strictures. Polished professional ensembles merged refinement and pragmatism in fluid lines for the wider realm of possibilities open to a female population who finally had free range of their environment, outfitting their unencumbered lifestyle with comfortable cuts that accommodated activities from working to socializing. “The high fashion of that time was grounded in a strong sense of reality: They were luxury creations, but nonetheless practical; precious, embroidered textiles that has a certain simplicity; short cocktail dresses that allowed for movement; WINTER 2016 | METROPOLITANLUXE.COM

and warm, roomy coats accompanied by oversized handbags,” says co-curator Tonchi. “This awareness created an opportunity for a fashion system that truly served its patrons, with garments designed for the life of the modern woman.” Forward-thinking Italian designers adapted swiftly to democratic demands, winning over American consumers with a sensitivity and flexibility that Tonchi holds up against the rigidity of an outmoded French system that clung to a conservative structure and restrictive fit until the mid-1960s.

The Italian garment industry’s gradual transition toward ready-to-wear leveraged recent American investments in improving and expanding factories to speed up production and control costs for making silk, leather and yarn without sacrificing their trademark quality. These innovative methods and imaginative designs are evident in a rare selection of archival textiles, swatch catalogs and patterns that added another dimension to Bellissima’s second stop near Milan and will also enhance its appearance at the NSU Art Museum.

Whereas international arbiters of haute couture did not embrace prêt-à-porter on a widespread scale until the end of the Sixties, Florentine knitwear designers had already begun to branch out in the early 1950s. The more inclusive vision represented on Florentine and then Roman runways was gradually implemented on a national level as the titans of alta moda translated their exquisite handiwork and custom tailoring into versions that retained signature styles in standardized sizes that could be replicated readily for mass distribution.

“We were not simply producers, but we had creative and imaginative skills,” observes Frisa, expressing pride in her country’s distinguished lineage. “American audiences will be surprised by the richness of our fashion in those days, which truly anticipated that Italian style which became a worldwide sensation in the Eighties. And they will understand why Italian fashion is still such a big thing. Even today.”

Celebrating

10 Amazing Years of

The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts stands as a pillar of community commitment to the development of art & culture in South Florida. By Elaine Lembo

ARTS & Culture

P

ull out your 2016 datebook because one of the largest commissioned visual and performing arts series, 10@10, is set to launch – in celebration of the Adrienne Arsht Centers 10th Anniversary. The best part? It all takes place at the Center. This isn’t just a birthday party recognizing each year of robust programming — it’s a milestone in the history of the acclaimed venue. The commissions will be original pieces from longtime Arsht Center collaborators, highlighting the rich cultural relationships the Center has fostered over the last 10 years and highlights the Center’s commitment to commissioning new work. In addition, an education or community engagement component will be incorporated into each new work to support the Center’s mission of making the performing arts accessible to all. It almost goes without saying that such an extensive and ambitious undertaking couldn’t happen overnight; actually “One could say that our 10@10 commissions have been in progress since the center’s inception. We have a terrific and talented team of programming professionals, led by our vice president of programming Liz Wallace, who expertly crafted a series of worldclass performances, including many premieres, that reflect Miami’s unique cultural mix.” says Arsht Center chief executive officer M. John Richard. 46

METROPOLITANLUXE.COM | WINTER 2016

Robert Battle, artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, who months ago helped announce the ten original commissions that make up 10@10 with John Richard and then executive vice president Scott Shiller, will bring “Awakening,” his first piece for the company as director, to Miami on February 8, 2016. “The Arsht Center is certainly a marvelous edifice that hosts a variety of world-class performances, but more than that, I see it as a light for the entire Miami community, which I consider my home,” said Battle. “There’s a part of me that’s still that little boy growing up in Liberty City, who remembers vividly being forever changed by what I saw and felt the first time I experienced the Ailey company as a student in Miami. I hope that my new work, with its message of rebuilding and forging ahead, continues that legacy of inspiration.” Battle also plans to host two choreography workshops in 2016 for the local South Florida community. The Commissioned pieces include: •

Siklòn, a work commissioned by the Arsht Center for the Cleveland Orchestra and created by Israeli-born composer Avner Dorman. The Orchestra will give the world premiere performance led by Giancarlo Guerrero March 17, 2016. The piece will celebrate the diverse influences that contribute to Miami’s musical landscape.

The world premiere of a new concert from the Arsht Center’s signature series, Jazz Roots -– performance slated for early in the 2016-2017 season.

A world premiere piece by the Haitian dance company Ayikodans, who found a home at the Arsht Center after the 2010 earthquake. It will be performed February 4, 2016.

Miami’s ultimate theater binge-watching experience:

The piece, part of the Center’s visual arts program, was showcased in December 2015 and joins Hernan Bas’ “Downhill at Dusk” and the collection’s inaugural work, “Red Poppies,” by Donald Sultan.

A new theatrical work will be created as an extension of the Center’s flagship arts education program. Once completed (launch date is 2017-2018) the musical, which will highlight innovation throughout American history, particularly the

The Center celebrated its highly anticipated, history-making four-day Grand Opening from October 5 – 8, 2006 with performances by best-selling pop stars and exciting young artists, spectacular fireworks, appearances by celebrities and dignitaries, a free all-day multicultural extravaganza, and an array of stunning performances from its four resident companies – Concert Association of Florida, Florida Grand Opera, Miami City Ballet and New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy

ARTS & Culture adventure, for over the last decade the Center, the culmination of thirty years of vision and collaboration of public and private interests that cost $473 million to build when it opened in 2006 had seen its share of highs and lows. Things took a turn for the better in 2008, when banker and philanthropist Adrienne Arsht donated $30 million to the Center. Stages that had been left dark in summer 2007 now carried more than 125 performances seen by nearly 130,000 in 2008. Parking rose to 3,000 spaces. Today the Center presents nearly 500 events annually across state-of-the-art performance spaces. More than 20,000 artists have entertained over 3 million guests. Operations have generated over $2 billion in economic impact. Some 30,000 young people annually benefit from the free arts education programs. Central to its programs are 12 signature series, including the largest jazz series in South Florida, the biggest flamenco festival on the U.S. East Coast, and a robust program of new theatrical works as well as free programming for the community, from Free Gospel Sundays to Family Fest. As Miami has evolved into a destination for arts and culture, so has the Arsht Center as a beacon for original programming that speaks to our diverse audience” says Richard. “We have helped introduce millions to new artistic experiences on our six state-of-the-art stages and through our robust arts education initiatives, and look forward to continuing to drive the development of the performing arts landscape for many more years to come.” Tickets are now available for Ayikodans, Alvin Ailey’s “The Awakening,” Cleveland Orchestra’s performance of Avner Dorman’s piece Siklòn, the 2016 Flamenco Festival and The Hammer Trinity. In recognition of the gift, the Performing Arts was renamed the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County. That same year the center took a turn for the better, with increase in the number of performances, and ticket sales. The center was finally taking its place as the communities town center and cultural icon.

A decade later, the Arsht Center has helped form the cultural landscape of the community. Prodviding not only a platform for artistic expression, but serving as a catalyst for change.

THE NEW-GENERATION COUPÉ Riva’s latest yacht knows where it stands and isn’t afraid to shout about it. BY ALEXANDRA GROOM

WINTER 2016 | METROPOLITANLUXE.COM

61

I

always feel a deep pride and sense of responsibility when a new Riva comes to life,” says Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group. “The Riva 76’ Perseo has inherited the brand’s 173-year-old history and poured it into a product that is state of the art from any and all points of view.” It is not just the unique colour of the yacht that sets it apart although the distinctive Riva Bright Black paint is given a modern twist with the use of the newer Moon Grey - but the sleek lines of the 76-foot coupé by Mauro Micheli of Officina Italiana Design give the yacht a real vitality. The sporty look is no accident of design – Riva has always been known for its boundarypushing style. The classic wooden Rivas we admire today were in their day at the forefront of yacht design, and just as radical-looking for their time as the Perseo is today. And as it should be, as with a top speed of 37 or 33 knots depending on engine options, the Perseo does not hang around.

“The Riva 76’ Perseo has inherited the brand’s 173-year-old history and poured it into a product that is state of the art from any and all points of view.”

The Perseo has been developed to fit seamlessly into the Riva family of yachts, which provides a consistent platform for those who wish to upgrade to larger models but stay with the Riva styling and finish. The Perseo is a grown-up coupé – stylish and mature, it knows and holds its place in a harbour. Lavish use of glass and an enormous sweeping windscreen fill the interior with natural light and enhance the contemporary interior. The main deck salon is a masterclass in open-plan living. Nearly 6-square-metres of open space greets you as you walk in through the sliding doors, with distinct lounging areas strategically placed around the space, and 360 degree views thanks to the enormous windows. Immediately, accents of stainless steel, dark lacquered surfaces and caramel teak catch the eye and give the interior a 62

METROPOLITANLUXE.COM | WINTER 2016

polished, contemporary feel. Furthest aft, a large L-shaped sofa makes the most of the lowered gunwales, so even from a sitting position there are uninterrupted views of the outside. In the middle of the salon on the port side is a dining table with seating for eight, with chairs by Poltrona Frau and soft furnishings in Armani Casa by Rubelli. Neutral tones in creams, taupes and greys ensure the interior does not detract from the outside views, all the while remaining chic and inviting. A pilot station completes the salon, with top of the range equipment and electronics and stylish ergonomic chairs. The well-appointed galley has been placed on the lower deck to maximise the usable guest space on the main deck. Next door is a utility space which includes a washing machine and extra storage facilities, enabling guests to stay at sea for long periods of time.

The stand-out feature of the lower deck however has to be the enormous master cabin. Full-beam and located amidships, it is reminiscent of staterooms usually found on much larger yachts. Above average-sized windows bathe the room in natural light, whilst a large mirror running along the bulkhead behind the bed makes the room feel open and bright. A large sofa and walk-in wardrobe on the port side mirror a unit on the starboard side that can be used as either a vanity station or a writing table. The colour themes from the main deck are replicated below, with light woods, dark lacquered inserts and soft leathers giving the yacht a contemporary and fresh feel. A large bathroom contains his’n’hers sinks in Port Saint Laurent marble, and a separate shower and head unit. Two more cabins complete the lower deck, both with their own ensuites. The VIP cabin with double bed is located in the bow, whilst a twin cabin is adjacent to the galley. All the cabins have been extensively sound-proofed and insulated, ensuring incidental noises from other cabins and the galley do not penetrate.

“The main deck salon is a masterclass in open-plan living.”

METROPOLITANLUXE.COM | WINTER 2016

“...a rare beast, a yacht that feels intrinsically part of a family but that has its own dynamic.”

As with other yachts in the Riva family, much thought has been put into the usability of outside spaces. The flybridge, or sundeck, has three distinct lounging areas, divided by a sofa bench. The unmistakeable Riva colour palette of Bright Black, Moon Grey and turquoise give the area a sleek, clean aesthetic. A driving console can also be installed on this deck for an owner/captain who would like to pilot, as this is a deck that proves a popular spot for guests while under way. On the bow is further lounging space and a slightly sunken sofa behind the sunpads. This unique arrangement allows the space to be shielded from the worst of the elements whilst still providing a fantastic view of the surroundings. The most versatile outside space however has to be the cockpit and swim platform. The cockpit is surprisingly large, and aids the transition between the inside and outside spaces with its large protective overhang. Easy movement between the interior and exterior enhances the feeling of being on the water, and makes entertaining that much easier. A continuation of the interior décor of a teak table and cream sofas and chairs into the outside spaces pulls everything together, giving a finished feel to the yacht. The bathing area also punches above its weight in terms of usability and looks. Hidden hydraulics allow it to lower into the

water to become a submerged platform, perfect for swimming and sunbathing, and also enabling easy launching of the 3-metre tender from the garage. Unlike some of its peers, the Perseo has two symmetrical teak staircases joining the transom to the cockpit, which not only works aesthetically but is more practical for mooring. The Perseo is a rare beast, a yacht that feels intrinsically part of a family but that has its own dynamic. It uses all the know-how and quality craftsmanship that the Riva brand can bring, but creates its own niche in the coupé market. It does not fall into the trap of its size range of not being quite one thing or another: it is beautiful, self-assured, and doesn’t care who knows it. Designed as a sustainable, eco-conscious environment, the development of Mayakoba, which means “city on the water” in Mayan, carefully guards the ecology in which it was so meticulously built. The walkways of the hotel are designed to preserve the indigenous mangrove forests and protect the hundreds of species of local birds and animals that inhabit them. The hotel is a car-free zone; covered boats called lanchas, electric golf carts, and bicycles are the only options for getting around the sprawling grounds other than on foot. Located 40 miles south of Cancun, this retreat feels remote but offers easy access to the vibrant town of Playa del Carmen.

ACCOMMODATIONS Carefully intertwined within mangroves, the Fairmont Mayakoba feels like an extension of its natural environment. Set back from the sea, the 401 rooms and suites are casual, but elegant - boasting spa style bathrooms and balconies with picturesque views of the ocean or tropical forest. There are 34 Casitas, which are clusters of two or four rooms in pretty twostory buildings with a distinctively Asian design, located in the beach and lagoon areas.

DINNING The resort has recently undergone a culinary and design overhaul. Under the direction of world-renowned chef, Richard Sandoval, all four restaurants --Lobby Lounge, El Puerto, Brisas and La Laguna -- now offer heightened dining experiences. In keeping with their commitment to maintain environmental sustainability, local and organic foods are used to create the modern Mexican, Latin and coastal inspired dishes. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience all of this firsthand with the resort’s cooking classes. Guided by the hotel’s culinary team, guests can tour the main kitchen and prepare local and authentic Mayan recipes.

ACTIVITIES There are many activities for the nature lover and the adventurous-at-heart. Fairmont Mayakoba has five pools throughout the property. An array of beach activities and water sports are available for guests including a jet ski and WINTER 2016 | METROPOLITANLUXE.COM
