Cemented in world and horological history books by becoming the first watch to be worn on the moon, as part of Apollo 11 in 1969. Today Omega maintains its pioneering spirit, the 2016 Moonphase is the first Speedmaster certified as a Master Chronometer, reaching the industry’s highest standards of precision and performance as approved by METAS – another important milestone in OMEGA’s superb history of watchmaking. 2017 marks the 60th year of Speedmaster and we caught up with Raynald Aeschlimann, the President and CEO of OMEGA to get his thoughts on the brands unmatched achievements and plans for the future. The Speedmaster is one of the most revered horological designs of all time. What does it mean to celebrate 60 years of this lasting legacy, and how does Omega plan on building on it to connect and attract younger collectors, while protecting its history and heritage? To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Speedmaster is truly special

as it’s an acknowledgement of its enduring appeal. It’s a unique and hugely popular watch and the fans love it, even after all these years. As for younger buyers, well I think the fact that the watch has been around so long is what appeals to them most. If you look at what they’re drawn to in terms of cars, clothes and other products, there’s a strong emphasis on authenticity. So of course, we will experiment with new materials and styles to appeal to younger buyers, but not at the expense of our history. Most experts are of the opinion that every collector should own an Omega timepiece, I’m sure you’ll agree – why would an Omega, particularly a Speedmaster, be an essential acquisition for a collector? Yes of course I’d agree that every collector should own an OMEGA, because you’re essentially investing in a slice of history. Not only will an OMEGA hold its value over time, but there will always be something about it that’s specific to the era in which it was created. In regards to the Speedmaster, what makes it special is the story. A watch designed with racing car drivers in mind that became the first watch worn on the moon. It’s a fascinating history.
“BROAD ARROW” - The first Speedmaster
The “Broad Arrow” (a reference to its distinctive hands), is the first Speedmaster, and the first chronograph wristwatch in the world with its tachymeter scale on the bezel as opposed to printed on the dial – a feature designed for the benefit of racing car drivers. This is considered the most highly valued of all the Speedmasters as it signaled the start of a very special journey.

The first OMEGA worn in space on the wrist of Walter Schirra on October 3rd 1962. From this moment, the Speedmaster’s space legacy had begun.
1987 1965 - THE MOONWATCH
First watch worn on the moon
When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped onto the lunar surface in 1969, this Speedmaster model became the first watch ever worn on the moon. In fact, it has since become the watch that has served on the most lunar missions. In design, the watch was the first Speedmaster featuring an asymmetrical case, done so to provide added protection for the crown and pushers. For the first time, the word “Professional” was also printed on the dial.
SPEEDMASTER AUTOMATIC - The “Holy Grail” for collectors
This was the first Speedmaster that combined an automatic movement with a Moonwatch case. OMEGA only produced the watch during two years making it a highly sought after, rare find – hence its “Holy Grail” nickname. In design, the case is slightly thicker to accommodate the automatic movement and the buttons and crown are closer fitting than the usual Moonwatch.
2016 Is there a speedmaster that has special meaning to you, above all others? Well, I have a great affection for the Moonwatch, for all of the reasons just covered. However this year we also released a reissue of the original 1957 Speedmaster as part of our 1957 Trilogy series. And I do love the simple elegance of that first model. What was your first Omega watch? An OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch.

The first Speedmaster certified as a Master Chronometer, this blue Moonphase timepiece reaches the industry’s highest standards of precision and performance as approved by METAS – another important milestone in OMEGA’s superb history of watchmaking. This summer The Sagamore Hotel Miami Beach presents a curated selling exhibit with historic and recent artworks from Cuban artists of the 80’s Generation. The selection of artworks was created by artists “who were raised after the ’59 revolution, and who mostly attended the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) school in Havana. These artists pushed the limits of what was permitted and prohibited at that time and thus emerged in tension with what the Revolution’s authorities considered as their fundamental tenets, for the Revolution sought to forbid anything that might stand opposed to its core values. This selection of pioneers who lived on and around the island’s shores, allows the viewer to feel and experience the undeniable courage of a generation of innovators who made and continue to make works of art without any rules but their own.”

Frost Museum of Science has made the move from its home of 55 years in Coconut Grove, to a prime downtown location in Miami’s Museum Park. The architectural masterpiece, designed by Grimshaw Architects, spans 250,000 square feet and features four inter-connected buildings, the Frost Planetarium, Aquarium, and North and West Wings, where guests can explore the core science behind living systems, the solar system and known universe, the physics of flight, light and lasers, the biology of the human body and mind, and much, much more. “Frost Science is a testimony to so many who gave their passion and dedication to making this a reality. The museum will be a place where our community can learn about 21st century science and technology in an era where science and technology is defining all that we do. Our goal is to be a vibrant educational resource to the local community and an international destination for visitors that encourages curiosity and investigation,” said Frank Steslow, Frost Science President.
Kids, and kids at heart can prepare to be wowed, fascinated and educated as they explore the facility’s 3-D 8Kprojection Planetariums, one of only 13 in the world, it features a 16 million color visual system using six projectors and surround sound inside – providing an ultra-real virtual journey for guests in the 250 seat arena. An engineering feat and stunning display, is the impressive 3 level Gulfstream Aquarium featuring fish, stingray, and tiny organism found within the coral. Each level offers guests a unique perspective on the environment, with the Deep level sharing the mysteries of the Gulf Stream’s depths through a one -of-a-kind, 31-foot- wide oculus lens and viewing portal that offers stunning views of the “stars of the exhibit”, the Gulf Stream sharks, who command loud cheers from onlookers at each appearance. Make your way to the North Wing to explore the “Feathers to the Stars” exhibit, where you’ll encounter a 30 foot feathered dinosaur and a supporting cast of feathered friends, as well as
explorations into the evolution and pioneers of human flight, from rockets to planes. This exhibit is particularly interactive offering lots of opportunities for hands-on exploration of some the theories and concepts being presented. Explore the physics of light and lasers at the LASERsHOW: Light, Color and Geometry, an installation with a dramatic series of lights that are displayed over guests’ heads, created by Matthew Schreiber. Bring the Everglades to life at the indoor/outdoor, River of Grass exhibit where digital animals frolic and interact, communicating a fun storyline of biodiversity, hydrology and environmental science. Last stop is the Lunar Terrace, a living roof showcasing native vegetation in an urban garden setting, located on the facility’s West Wing. After hours of exploration, enjoy views of Museum Park at the facility’s casual dining area.

Photographer KT Merry applies her talents to help tackle the issue of animal conservation. by Amy Lynne Hayes
I read a quote about what wolves do on a daily basis. One of them was render loyalty, and that always stuck with me. I feel as strongly about endangered species as I do about friends and family.
t started with a concept of connection: your joy is my joy, your suffering is my suffering. It’s an underlying belief behind conservation, and one of the driving forces that led Miami-based photographer KT Merry to launch Render Loyalty, selling fine photographic artwork in support of threatened species. “I read a quote about what wolves do on a daily basis. One of them was render loyalty, and that always stuck with me. I feel as strongly about endangered species as I do about friends and family,” she explains. It was the morning of April 17, 2015 when an image of a male northern white rhino and his dedicated protectors scrolled across her computer screen. This particular rhino was reported to be the last of his kind, and this image a poignant statement on global human impact on all animals. “I always had in mind that I would eventually take photos of elephants in Africa, and endangered species,” Merry recalls. “It lit a fire under me to start making it happen.” Merry already had a well established career

as a destination wedding photographer, so it was a natural progression for her to apply her talents to a cause for change. Render Loyalty grew out of a desire to create a direct path between photographing and actually supporting endangered animals. Merry and her husband and business partner, Chad Keffer, took the initiative to travel to Africa, where they partnered with two select organizations at the forefront of the conservation efforts in Kenya. The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust focuses on the needs of orphaned elephants, while the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy supports more than 70 mammal species, including rhinos, zebras, elephants, lions and giraffes. During their travels, Merry was able to gain firsthand insight into both organizations. “We were there from dawn until dusk, and saw everything they are doing,” she says. She now shares snippets of their day-to-day operations on the Render Loyalty blog. Telling the stories behind the scenes is imperative, she believes, as it helps people trust their efforts and in turn be more willing to support

their causes. And since not everyone is able to pack up their lives to volunteer in person, purchasing one of her photographs provides an opportunity to pledge financial support in return for a truly special piece of art. Since their launch in December 2016, Render Loyalty has donated $15,000 to the conservation efforts of its partner organizations. This is of course a promising start, and one Merry is committed to increasing as her project gains more awareness. The one thing she wants to make sure to prevent is this issue slipping through the cracks, and becoming a side thought, especially since animals do not have a voice of their own. “The larger government roles aren’t going to be able to fix this problem, it’s up to us to make whatever contribution we can,” Merry says, whether that be something as simple as a share on social media, or a financial pledge through purchasing a photograph.
Both of her Lewa series and DSWT series are available in different sized limited edition prints, with 20 percent of retail donated to the respective organization. Framed first editions are also for purchase, with 60 percent of retail donated. All are hand signed by KT Merry. Though she currently works exclusively with the two organizations in Kenya, she has a vision to expand to other continents and include other species in the future. And showing and selling her photography in person is helping her achieve that mission. She had a successful show of the Lewa series in New York City in November, and was included in an Earth Day exhibition at the Miami Beach Edition hotel in April. Her next scheduled appearance will be in November in Los Angeles to benefit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, with 100 percent of retail going directly to support the organization. Merry has chosen a powerful medium to communicate her conservation message. “Art is a great connector of invoking emotion, and inviting people who might not get to see these animals in person into their world,” she says. And through the combined efforts of upstanding organizations, conservationists like Merry, and the support of the global community, these animals will still be with us for many years to come. arleton Varney is without a doubt one of America’s most renowned designers, he has put his signature touch on countless hotels and resorts all over the world, including The Waldorf Towers, Plaza Hotel in New York and The Breakers in Palm Beach. In years past he was the design consultant to the Carter Presidential Library and for numerous State functions at the White House. As president of Dorothy Draper & Co. Inc., one of the oldest established interior design firms in the United States, and of course a pre-eminent expert in home décor, we have asked Carleton to share his expert tips for creating a fabulous setting for an alfresco South Florida summer party. With a design philosophy that stresses the use of bright colors and the rejection of the impractical, uncomfortable and drab, Carleton offers these bold and imaginative tips: 1. ACCESSORIES. Find accessories (plates, napkins, cups, cutlery, etc.) that are either disposable or easily cleaned. There are so many great colorful accessories for entertaining on the
market. You can find a variety of pinks, orange, pineapple yellow, and in cool yachting colors such as sailor blue and white with touches of red. 2. LIGHTING. Summertime night lighting is essential to a great cocktail party under the stars. If you don’t have a silver moon above you, hang a colorful Japanese lantern from wires in a nearby tree. Votive candles are practical and won’t blow out in the wind. 3. EXTRA TOUCHES. I often light pathways with brown paper bags with turned down cuffs. Fill the bags with sand to provide weight, then stick candles into the sand, light the wick, and the bag will protect flame. 4. COVERINGS. For a country picnic consider checkered kitchen towels as napkins. Think colors of blue and white, green and white, or red and white. They serve as great lap covers as well. 5. MIX & MATCH. Use wooden bowls of mixed sizes and shapes on your buffet table for salads, chicken wings, coleslaw, and fresh corn. What about an old wooden wheel barrel filled with country red cherries?
6. SEATING. Folding chairs come in all shapes and designs these days such as bamboo, wicker, as well as wood. And if you need extra seating don’t be concerned about the mix. Pull up whatever lightweight chairs you own. Let the mix happen. Ditto with the dishes, cups, and saucers. 7. THE FLOWERS. My favorite flowers for casual entertaining- Queen Anne’s lace. If I’m entertaining in the south, then I go for magnolia leaves and rhododendrons. To keep rhododendrons looking fresh, once they start to wilt give them a gentle shower in your own bathroom. 1 tablespoon red bell pepper, minced 1 tablespoon yellow onion, minced 1 tablespoon garlic, minced 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/4 teaspoon cumin 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1/4 cup beer 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1 tablespoon cilantro, minced 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup cotija cheese 1 teaspoon Tajin, Mexican seasoning 1 lime, quartered Shaved jalapeno Shaved radishes Minced chives Directions: Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Slather corn with butter and place on a baking sheet. Roast in oven for 30-35 minutes. Meanwhile make the sofrito by sautéing bell peppers, onion, and garlic in olive oil for 5 minutes. Add cumin and tomato paste. Stir. Add beer, salt, and pepper. Stir and cook over medium heat for an additional 5 minutes. Turn off the heat and add cilantro. Set
aside and allow to cool. Once it’s cooled, fold the sofrito into the mayonnaise. Allow the cooked corn to cool for a few minutes then slather the corn with sofrito aioli. Top with cotija cheese and sprinkle with Tajin. Add shaved jalapeno, radish, and chives. Serve with lime.

RECIPE THREE MELON GREEK SALAD Champagne Mustard Vinaigrette Serves : 4 Ingredients: 1/2 cup red onion, thinly sliced 1 cup seedless watermelon, cubed 1 cup honey dew melon, cubed 1 cup cantaloupe, cubed 1 cup cucumber, seeded and cubed 1/2 cup feta cheese, crumbled 1/3 cup black olives, pitted and halved 1 1/3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon champagne vinegar 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon honey Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, Chives, for garnish Directions: In small mixing bowl, whisk together olive oil, vinegar, lemon juice, honey, and salt and pepper to taste. Mix vigorously until well combined. In a large mixing bowl, add the remaining ingredients and toss. Allow to sit for 15 minutes for flavors to come together. Add the dressing to the bowl but reserve a spoonful for garnishing later if desired. Toss with large spoons being careful not to bruise the melons.
You can serve this salad right away but it’s best when refrigerated for 30 minutes to 1 hour. To serve, spoon in the center of a plate, drizzle with extra dressing, and garnish with a chive.

“Pink Lemonade” Watermelon Lemonade Slushies (Serves: 4) Ingredients: 4 cups frozen watermelon cubes 1/3 cup sugar 1/2 cup water 1 bunch mint leaves, plus more for garnish 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice 1 ½ oz gin 4 watermelon wedges, small, for garnish 4 watermelon slices, thin as possible for garnish Directions: Cube the watermelon and place in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze, at least 2 hours. If the name were any indication you’d expect Elia Gourmet to be a formal dining establishment decked out with white table-cloth, instead prepare to be greeted by the warmth, casual décor and chatter of an “everyone is welcome here” neighborhood eatery. Launched 3 years ago by brothers Dimitris and Mario Harvalis, Elia’s has quickly become a “go-to spot” for locals. There is a steady flow of patrons – a mixed crowd of post workout fitness fiends looking for a healthy and fresh meal, and a corporate crowd out to grab something tasty and substantial. It’s clear many are “regulars” as they linger to engage in familiar conversation with Dimitris, who serves as the restaurants head chef. A veteran of Miami’s nightclub scene, Dimitris who isn’t formally trained spent years cooking with family, honing his skills as a self-taught oven master. For his Mediterranean-inspired menu, he sources the best and freshest fare from near and far. “We don’t have a freezer at Elia,” he admits. “The kitchen is small and the design definitely plays to my approach, which is fresh is best.
