Zoldans donate $5 million for new student center

The Zoldan family of Youngstown, founders of Phantom Fireworks, is donating $5 million to Youngstown State University’s campaign to build a new student center on campus.

The donation matches the largest gifts ever given to YSU and, in turn, the new facility will be called the Zoldan Family Center.

The new YSU facility will be called the Zoldan Family Center.

The Zoldans are long-time supporters of YSU, including a $1 million gift in 2020 for student scholarships and to establish a new mentorship program, in honor of their parents, Sam and Sylvia Zoldan, and their uncle, Abe Yampolsky.

“The word ‘philanthropy’ certainly describes the Zoldan family,” said YSU President Jim Tressel. “The word comes from the Greek language and means love of humanity. Bruce Zoldan and the entire Zoldan family have once again lived up to that definition. We thank them for their tremendous generosity in helping to make the dream of a new student center move closer to reality here at YSU.”

“The Zoldan family has benefited from the university’s continued strong presence here in our community,” said Bruce J. Zoldan, president and chief executive of Phantom Fireworks. “It is a privilege to be able to give back and support President Tressel and the entire YSU community and to make a difference in the lives of all of our students.”

Ellen and Jim Tressel are leading the campaign to raise $20 million for a new student center on campus.

Phantom Fireworks traces its origins to the early 1970s and today is America’s number one consumer-based fireworks retailer. The company has retail stores and showrooms in 15 states and more than 1,500 seasonal tents and stands throughout the nation.

“Bruce and his family are at the top of the list of success stories at YSU, and their legacy now joins the likes of the Williamsons, Meshels, Kohlis, DeBartolos, Beeghlys, Cafaros and so many other YSU benefactors,” Tressel said.

Grand opening Feb. 10 for vintage candy store

Sweet Memories Vintage Tees will host a grand opening for its new vintage candy store on Friday, Feb.10. The event occurs from 11 a.m.-8 p.m.

The grand opening will feature Good Humor ice cream, tastings of Isaly’s new line of coffees and the release of Sweet Memories licensed historic Isaly’s and Klondike Bar apparel line. Linda Barton is the founder and CEO.

The store stocks vintage candies, classic sodas and Sweet Memories’ complete line of licensed apparel.

The grand opening includes a ribbon cutting with the Regional Chamber and a check presentation to Akron Children’s Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.

Community Foundation opens 2023 applications

The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley has opened its first grant cycle for the new year, bringing with it a handful of changes to applications.

Nonprofits serving Mahoning and Trumbull counties can apply any time at CFMV.org/grant-opportunities.

The most noticeable change is new dead-

The new store stocks vintage candies, classic sodas and Sweet Memories Vintage Tee’s complete line of licensed apparel, including the largest collection of Klondike and Good Humor apparel in the United States.

Sweet Memories is located at 1282 Trumbull Ave., Suite A1 in Girard. The store is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday and noon-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The phone number is 330759-3500. The company’s website is www.sweetvintagetees.com.

lines for all grant applications, which have moved to the 15th of each quarter – Jan. 15, April 15, July 15 and Oct. 15. Other updates that affect all applications include simplified language for questions in the application forms, the option to select grant periods longer than one year and the addition of balance sheets to the required financial documents that must be submitted.

CFMV also added a glossary of terms

found in grant applications that may not be everyday language for grantseekers. The full glossary can be found at CFMV.org/glossary.

“After collecting feedback from grantseekers throughout 2022, we worked to make this year’s application process as accessible and easy to complete as we could,” says Shari Harrell, president of the Community Foundation. “We recognize that nonprofits should be dedicating their time to their mission, not spending hours writing grants to support that work. If Valley nonprofits have input on how we can make our processes simpler, we’re always open for feedback.”

Changes were also made to the focus areas of the Western Reserve Health Foundation, which supports health-focused efforts in Mahoning County, and the Trumbull Memorial Health Foundation, which is dedicated to Trumbull County.

Following recommendations from the community health improvement plans recently completed by local health agencies for Mahoning and Trumbull counties, the two health foundations will now prioritize applications that address the three focus areas laid out in the plans: mental health and substance abuse, access to care, and community conditions and safety.

Applications are also open for the William Swanston Charitable Fund, which prioritizes youth-focused projects that reduce disparities in health, education and children’s services.

These four grant opportunities – the CFMV general grant, William Swanston Charitable Fund, Trumbull Memorial Health Foundation and Western Reserve Health Foundation – are available each quarter. Other 2023 opportunities include the Young Philanthropist Fund (due April 15), the International Institute Funds (due July 15) and the Hospice Trust of Trumbull County (due Oct. 15). Applications for each grant opportunity, along with more information on each and an FAQ about grants process, can be found at CFMV.org/grant-opportunities.

The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley strives to be a leader and advocate for strategic philanthropy by partnering with donors to anchor a permanent and growing endowment and making investments in the Mahoning Valley that improve the quality of life for all residents.

Ohio introduces new farmer tax credit

n The Ohio Department of Agriculture is helping to ensure the next crop of Ohio producers has the resources to provide for their families and those across the state.

The Beginning Farmer Tax Credit is now available to those who’ve recently entered the field and those who help beginning farmers.

“Agriculture and food is Ohio’s number one industry,” said ODA Interim Director Tracy Intihar. “The Beginning Farmer Tax Credit will help keep costs down for new producers and encourage others to help them. This incentive ensures that our state will continue to provide for local communities, the country, and even the world.”

To qualify, a beginning farmer is someone who:

• Is a resident of Ohio.

• Is seeking entry to or has entered farming within the last 10 years.

• Farms or intends to farm on land in Ohio.

• Is not a partner, member, shareholder, or trustee of the assets the individual is seeking to purchase or rent.

• Has a total net worth of less than $800,000, including spouse and dependent assets, as adjusted for inflation each year.

• Provides majority of daily physical labor and management of the farm.

• Has adequate farming experience or knowledge in the type of farming for which seeking assistance.

• Submits projected earnings statements and demonstrates profit potential.

• Demonstrates farming will be a significant source of income for the individual.

• Participates in a financial management program approved by ODA.

Beginning farmers will need to complete a financial management program to qualify.

Along with beginning farmers, asset owners, or people or businesses that sell or rent farmland, livestock, buildings, or equipment to beginning famers may apply as well. In order for land to qualify as an asset, it must either total at least 10 acres or produce an average annual income of at least $2,500 for farming.

The Beginning Farmer Tax Credit equals 3.99 percent of one of the following:

• In the case of a sale, the sale price. The credit must be claimed in the year of the sale.

• In the case of a rental, the gross rental income that the individual or business received during the first three years of the rental agreement. To qualify for the credit, an asset must

be rented at prevailing community rates. In the case of a rental, the credit is claimed over the first three years of the rental or share-rent agreement.

• In the case of a rental through a share-rent agreement, the gross rental income received during the first three years of the share-rent agreement. (A share-rent agreement is an arrangement by which, in exchange for the rented assets, the beginning farmer provides the owner of the assets with a specified portion of the farm products produced from the assets.) In the case of a rental, the credit is claimed over the first three years of the rental or share-rent agreement.

The Beginning Farmer Tax Credit was created when House Bill 95 was signed into law by Gov. Mike DeWine on April 21, 2022. Primary sponsors for the bill were Rep. Susan Manchester (R-Waynesfield) and Rep. Mary Lightbody (D-Westerville).

Certified radiologists read all mammograms and because a second look can mean a second chance, Mercy Health double-check all mammograms with a computer-aided detection system that detects more breast cancer than mammography alone. Your physician will receive a copy of the results.

LETTERS Warns of Doomsday Clock advancing, urges action

Dear Editor,

The Doomsday Clock was created in 1947 by the Board of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, a group that included Albert Einstein, to gauge existential threats to the survival of life on our planet. Initially, it focused on nuclear threats but, starting in 2007, now includes environmental threats as well.

Recently, the Board set the Doomsday Clock to 90 seconds to midnight, the closest it has ever been to that theoretical time that could trigger events leading to the total destruction of all forms of life on Earth. It provides a wake-up call, a warning that we need to take immediate action to prevent such a catastrophe.

The setting on the Doomsday Clock reflects the heightened risks we face, such as the war in Ukraine and Russian President Putin’s repeated allusions to the use of nuclear weapons. It should serve as a reminder that we are just on poor decision, accident, misjudgment or reckless leader away from disaster!

But it’s not just Russia: nuclear armed states, including the United States, continue to invest billions in new and improved nuclear weapons. The U.S. is currently on track to spend over $1 trillion over the next 30 years to replace every weapon in our nuclear arsenal!

I urge each of us to put maximum pressure on our elected representatives to take all necessary steps to reduce the risk of such a catastrophe and thus push the Doomsday Clock back to minutes instead of seconds.

Contest winner thanks Robins, Metro Monthly

Mark and staff,

I just wanted to take a moment to say, “Thank You,” to both you and Robins Theatre for providing me with two tickets for last night’s “American Pop” performance. Both my friend who joined me and I had a very enjoyable evening.

I will continue to look for “Fake Ads” in upcoming issues, so you have not heard the last of me. :) :) :)

P.S. Mark, I don’t remember if it was my sophomore, junior or senior year, but in one of those years, I had your dad as a homeroom teacher at Chaney – Class of 1971.

$50k to fund fitness center at Potential Development

The Youngstown Foundation recently presented Potential Development with a $50,000 grant to support its high school outdoor fitness center.

Youngstown Foundation President Lynnette Forde joined Potential Development CEO Paul Garchar, staff and students in early December to present the gift. The fitness and recreational area will include a cardio stepper, chest and back press, squat press, elliptical, angled balance beams, among other features.

The tentative installation is scheduled for this spring.

“In addition to the many health benefits students will receive from the upgraded facility, the equipment can be utilized for therapeutic purposes and for Special Olympics training. We are grateful to the Youngstown Foundation for assisting us in meeting our goal for this outdoor space,” said Garchar.

Potential Development is a Pre-K through 12th grade school for children with autism. It provides children with autism a safe, structured educational environment with supportive services that give students the necessary skills and independence to lead a productive life.

Ohio’s minimum wage increased to $10.10 on Jan.1 PERSONAL FINANCE

Ohio’s minimum wage increased on Jan. 1 to $10.10 per hour for non-tipped employees and $5.05 per hour for tipped employees. The minimum wage applies to employees of businesses with annual gross receipts of $372,000 or more per year.

The state’s previous minimum wage was $9.30 per hour for non-tipped employees and $4.65 per hour for tipped employees. The 2021 minimum wage applied to employees of businesses with annual gross receipts of $342,000 or more per year.

The Constitutional Amendment (II-34a) passed by Ohio voters on in November 2006 states Ohio’s minimum wage shall increase on Jan. 1 of each year by the rate of inflation.

The state minimum wage is tied to the Consumer Price index (CPI-W) for urban wage earners and clerical workers for the 12-month period prior to September. This CPI-W index increased by 8.7 percent over the 12-month period from Sept. 1, 2021 to Aug. 31, 2022. The Constitutional Amendment is available at codes.ohio.gov/ ohio-constitution/section-2.34a.

For employees at smaller companies with annual gross receipts of less than $371,000 per year after Jan 1, 2023, and for 14- and 15-year-olds, the state minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. For these employees, the state wage is tied to the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, which requires an act of Congress and the President’s signature to change.

Ohio’s minimum wage increased on Jan. 1 to $10.10 per hour for non-tipped employees and $5.05 per hour for tipped employees. The minimum wage applies to employees of businesses with annual gross receipts of $372,000 or more per year.

Youngstown kicks off business-facade program, revolving-loan fund

Youngstown will use $3 million from its American Rescue Plan Act funds to create two new programs – a city-based Business-Facade Program and Youngstown Revolving Loan Fund.

Valley Economic Development Partners will administer the programs. The Liberty-based nonprofit began accepting applications on its website on Jan. 17. Funding will be available until funds are depleted. The programs will provide financial assistance to small businesses in Youngstown to upgrade the facade of their commercial properties and to help them start or expand business.

Applications for both programs started being accepted by Valley Partners on their

website on Jan. 17.

The facade program’s $1 million was contributed by the city of Youngstown American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Funds to Valley Partners.

The facade-improvement program is a forgivable loan with a five-year term. Every year a participating business remains open at their location, 20 percent of the loan will be forgiven. Eligible businesses will be able to apply for a match of up to 50 percent of a facade project with a $20,000 maximum.

The Youngstown Revolving Loan Fund provides capital to for-profit and not-forprofit businesses located in Youngstown. Valley Partners is administering the

$2-million program with Youngstown American Rescue Plan Act funds. The target borrower is a small business that has been impacted by the COVID-19 shutdown and having trouble acquiring funds from traditional lending channels. The maximum loan is $150,000, with interest below the current prime. Loan terms are a minimum of five years preceded by a 12-month, interest-only period, depending on loan amount and collateral.

The city is encouraging small businesses to apply as soon as possible. More information on the application process and program guidelines can be found on the city of Youngstown’s website. For more information, contact Valley Partners.

Meijer launches enhanced mPerks program in stores

Meijer is revamping its mPerks customer-rewards program. The Michigan retailer said the changes are in response to the success of its digital coupon and rewards program. The enhanced mPerks program will allow for more personalized rewards and savings, with customers earning points for every dollar spent and every qualifying prescription filled, along with opportunities to earn more points. Restrictions apply. For more information, visit www.meijer.com.

The retailer’s Midwest markets will roll over to the new program in phases.

“Meijer is committed to providing value and convenience for our customers, and the changes we’ve made to mPerks expands on both by offering more personalized savings, along with more opportunities to earn points,” said Meijer Vice President of Customer Strategy Derek Steele. “We want to ensure we’re continuing to provide personalized value while also making the experience fun and engaging.”

Customers in Southeast Michigan began making the transition to the new mPerks program on Jan. 16, while the retailer’s other Midwest markets will roll over to the new program in phases through February.

Changes include:

n Purchases now earn points, which customers can apply toward the savings of their choice.

n Each qualifying prescription filled now earns points, instead of every five prescriptions filled.

n Points expire after 90 days, as opposed to 45 days in current system.

n Customers choose when and how they want to redeem points for additional savings.

Customers’ existing unclaimed rewards will automatically make the transition to the new program with the same value. Any in-progress rewards, as well as existing pharmacy credits, will be transferred to the new program as points.

Meijer opened its first local superstore in 2021 in Boardman. A second store is currently underway near the Eastwood Mall. Shoppers can enroll at meijer.com/ mperks, or by downloading the Meijer app.

Program seeks to improve maternal, infant health

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Medicaid Director Maureen Corcoran launched Comprehensive Maternal Care in January. This community-based, statewide program is aimed at improving the health and well-being of moms, infants, and families covered by Medicaid.

The initiative was announced last September as part of DeWine’s “Bold Beginning: Healthy, Supported Families.”

“Giving all Ohioans the best possible start at life truly begins before a child is even born and that means ensuring the child’s family has access to the resources they need,” said DeWine.

Comprehensive Maternal Care creates a framework for providers and community partners to work together to develop person-centered, customized interventions to support women and families who’ve historically lacked ready access to high-quality responsive care before and after pregnancy.

To participate, obstetrical practices are required to measure and engage with patients and families through advisory councils or other means to hear firsthand accounts of how access to care, cultural competence, and communication methods affect patient outcomes. Practices must use patient input to improve the patient experience and reduce disparities. They also must consider and link patients to resources that address broader factors of health, such as housing, food instability, and transportation. Additional criteria for participation include:

n Using the Pregnancy Risk Assessment to quickly identify women in need of a first prenatal appointment and ensure timely access appointments and services.

n Engaging community supports and evaluating the mother’s and family’s experiences throughout treatment.

n Ensuring patient involvement and care continuity with their providers.

n Formally assessing practice strengths and patient needs annually to ensure resources, and best practices available are employed and achieving healthier outcomes.

Ohio Medicaid estimates investing $5 million in the initiative by the end of its first year, reaching over 14,000 pregnant and postpartum patients and enrolling 77 medical practices that are currently caring for pregnant and postpartum patients.

Winter Writing Camp scheduled for Feb.18

Lit Youngstown will host the seventh annual Winter Writing Camp Saturday, Feb. 18, at St. John’s Episcopal Church and the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County.

The all-day event is free with registration and open to the public. The registration deadline is Feb. 5, and seating is limited.

This year’s camp offers sessions for adults, teens and youth ages five and up, of all experience levels. Adult session topics include writing poetry from life, interviewing to collect family stories, writing a caretaking graphic memoir, submitting work for publication, writing flash fiction, and writing the true story. The event will include a musical performance by Jon Locketti, and a cookie table and open mic for those who would like to share their work.

The 2023 Winter Writing Camp teaching artists include R. W. Franklin, Tanesha Bokally, E.F. Schraeder, Arya F. Jenkins, Marissa Snyder, Mari Alschuler, Katie Urs, Lindsay Sinkovich, Marissa McFly and McKayla Rockwell.

Session leader R. W. Franklin, who will be attending for the sixth time, said she thinks of Winter Writing Camp as a miniature writing conference, “except it’s completely free and more personal. If you’re a new or experienced writer, it’s great to spend the day with other creative people,” she said. “And kids sharing their writing at the open mic is just the best.”

In 2022, youth attendees worked with local playwright Kelly Bancroft to write and perform an original play.

Pre-registration is required by Feb. 5 and includes lunch (no walk-ins). Youth under 12 are required to have an adult present, and kindergarteners and first graders to have an adult with them throughout the day. Registration information is available at LitYoungstown.org.

This year’s Winter Writing Camp is funded in part by the Char and Chuck Fowler Foundation, the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, and the Youngstown Foundation
