According to the National Weather Service website, “The probability of heavy snow in Oklahoma increases gradually through fall and early winter to a peak in January, then remains high through

March before dropping sharply in April,” and of the state’s top snowstorms since 1951 none of them

blew our way before November 24 or after March 19. So we should be safe for seven or eight months. Probably. We hope.

But keep your galoshes handy, just in case. Not only will dry shoes speed you on your way, but so will

our service that allows you to pick up and check out the items you have on reserve without library staff serving as middlemen. Find out all about it in this issue.

Volunteer Week is April 21 - 27, so a big group hug for all of you. And speaking of volunteers, we’re taking applications for this summer’s Teen volunteers to help out with the Summer at the Library

Nor Any Drop To Drink by Larry Johnson

As I write this month’s story Winter Storm Rocky has just come to town. So far he has been an exemplary guest and has already gifted us with a half an inch of rain. We need it. Checking Drought Monitor, a combined effort of USDA and NOAA, reveals that one year ago 4% of the state was experiencing the worst level of drought but this year 42% of the state is held in drought’s dustiest grip. 4 n info METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM magazine n April 2013

ne hundred per cent of the state falls into the “severe drought” category. Projections suggest the drought will worsen through the next six months. Here in Oklahoma City officials report that our principal reservoir, Lake Hefner, is at the lowest levels in its 65 year history and expensive sailboats dot the exposed lakebed tossed about like toys in a drained bathtub. Naturally, in Oklahoma, such tales of water woes invite comparisons to the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, the most sustained period of drought ever experienced in recorded American history. And seeing the drying lakebed and stranded boats reminded me of these stark photos from our Oklahoma Images collection. Although 1934 was the most notorious year of the Dirty Thirties, Oklahoma City’s sole reservoir, Lake Overholser, was able to provide an adequate amount of water. But by 1936 conditions worsened to the point that city water officials reported available supplies in terms of days and weeks. The perimeter of the lake began to dry up as seen in these dramatic photos and dust-drifts in the area gave the western edge of Oklahoma City a Saharan appearance. In those days not a lot could be done to alleviate the situation. In addition to encouraging residents to pray for rain, city officials

enforced rationing and embarked on an ambitious well-drilling program to find new sources of water. The program also included commandeering existing private wells which were proven gushers. Supplies were tenuous into the early 1940s and as late as 1939 Lake Overholser was reported to be six feet below the “normal” line and two feet below the “safe” line – an eight foot total deficit. The lake is only 13 feet at its deepest. Eventually the rains came and the lake levels rose to safe levels once again. A safe and reliable water supply became a top priority in the drought’s aftermath, one which would also provide plenty of water for the city’s growing population and burgeoning industry. Today we have an extensive system of lakes including nearby Hefner and Draper and the more distant Atoka and Canton. Will it be enough to slake our thirst? Let’s hope this month’s proverbial showers arrive on time to produce May’s flowers. Larry “Buddy” Johnson has been with MLS since 1998. Not only a librarian at the Downtown Library, he is the brilliant mind behind the Oklahoma Images database which is a collection of pictures and essays that illustrate the history of central Oklahoma. 028.9/P6651b Book Was There: Reading in Electronic Times by Andrew Piper For all who fear the death of the book, Piper tells us more than we wanted to know in only 157 pages. Interesting tidbits about the history of the book are interspersed with predictions about the future of the book. In the process, he compares today’s fears to similar fears in days gone by: photography will be the death of painting, print will be the death of handwriting, etc. Most people who fear the death of the book are not seriously worried about the death of reading. For them it’s the electronic format they are bemoaning. But before the book (the book with the spine that stands nicely on the shelf next to other books with spines to make a library) there were other formats. Those other formats were books, too, although they may have looked like scrolls and were harder to keep in order. The author waxes poetic and philosophical about

With the digital preservation of 15 million Google Books, we can read more than ever. Can you imagine that “At the turn of the 19th century (a German naturalist) imagined putting the entire material world in a single book”? Still, the author sounds conflicted. “Letting go belongs as much to the past as it does the future of the book. In the end, we must always let go of the book.” Then he cautions us “not to let the computer become the new book.” Marilyn Backus has worked for the Metropolitan Library System for over 25 years. She currently works in the Materials Selection department and selects many of the great non-fiction titles and features films that you can check out at the library.

Jar City and Silence of the Grave by Arnaldur Indridason When you think of Icelandic literature, if you do, you probably think of the medieval national sagas. You know, Vikings and stuff. If you’re a fan of mysteries, the new Icelander to get to know is Arnaldur Indridason, author of a series of noir police procedurals set in Reykjavik and featuring one of the genre’s darkest protagonists, Erlendur Sveinsson. Erlendur lives alone but is frequently visited by his drug-addicted daughter, a young woman who reminds him of his ex-wife--who detests him. Jar City, the first book in the series, uses the brutal murder of an old man who may have committed a series of rapes 20 years ago to explore some of the seamier secrets in the Icelandic character. In Silence of the Grave, the discovery of a skeleton makes Erlendur

It’s that part of the past that just won’t go away, what fellow Scandinavian, the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen referred to as “the corpse in the cargo.” In the wake of Stieg Larsson’s and Henning Mankell’s successes, Nordic noir has become popular with American readers. If you can stand the cold, give Arnaldur Indridason a try. Jar City is also available from MLS as an audiobook CD. Doug Bentin edits and writes in info magazine.

Calling Invisible Women by Jeanne Ray I believe most women have felt invisible at some point in their lives, but for Clover Hobart, it really happened. One day she looked in the mirror and saw that she was no longer there. Her husband, a busy doctor, didn’t notice. Her son, an unemployed college graduate, didn’t notice either. Clover finds an advertisement in the paper for a support group for invisible women. She joins the group and learns to embrace her invisibility and use it for the good of the community and her family. Clover leaves her clothes behind and moves invisibly through her husband’s medical office, gaining insight into the reason he is always so exhausted that he might not notice her invisibility. She goes to a school and puts a stop to some bullying. She even thwarts a bank

Her real challenge comes when she decides to go after the drug company that manufactures the drugs that, when used in combination, has rendered a lot of women invisible. This was a really fun story that could fire up your imagination as you think about the wonderful things you could do if you could only become truly invisible. This title is also available from MLS in large print and in a Kindle edition, as well as an audiobook CD and a WMA audiobook. Phyllis Davidson is a reference librarian at the Downtown Library. Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett ; illustrated by Jon Klassen Annabelle lives in a cold town, filled with varying shades of brown and gray. One day she finds a box. It is full of yarn: colorful yarn, warm yarn, never-ending skeins of yarn. So Annabelle does what any industrious child would do – she knits herself a sweater. Turns out, there is plenty of yarn left, and Annabelle is able to make a sweater for her dog, Mars. Her friend, Nate, is jealous. So she makes him one as well. Soon, everyone in town is clad in a handmade original by Annabelle: cats, bears, birdhouses, pickup trucks. The box of yarn and the generous girl become known the world over. Travelers from far and wide come to

An archduke even makes an appearance and tries to buy the box of yarn for himself, but Annabelle won’t give it up, not willingly, not even for ten million dollars. Children will enjoy watching the dark, depressing town spring to colorful life. It’s a fairy-tale of sorts, illustrating the magic of kindness and giving. This book was named as one of five Caldecott Honor Books for 2013. With her incredible book knowledge and sharply-honed survivor skills, Jana Hausburg is humanity’s best chance in a zombie apocalypse. She is also the manager at the Capitol Hill Library.

Leonardo’s Lost Princess by Peter Silverman with Catherine Whitney An interesting glimpse into the world of art collecting, Leonardo’s Lost Princess took me beyond the art to which I’m accustomed – velvet paintings of dogs playing poker, illuminated by black lights. Silverman relates the story of his discovery, during just the last ten years, of a previously-unknown painting by Leonardo da Vinci. The serious art world is very complex in regards to identifying and valuing art. The older a work is, the harder it is to confirm its creator and worth. There is no blue book of prices or a real science to the study – it turns out to be….well, an art. When this well-to-do art collector somewhat unknowingly picks up what is thought to be a 19th century German work in a New York City art gallery 8 n info METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM magazine n April 2013

reviewed by Lloyd Lovely for the relatively low price of $19,000, he correctly believes that it is a much older work from the 1500’s. His investigation into the history of the piece slowly and painstakingly leads to the incredible conclusion that it is, in fact, a Leonardo and is worth about $150 million! A lot of factors enter into a painting’s authentication, including technique and style, dating, iconography, attributional history, and provenance. I found the process fascinating. I think you will too. Lloyd Lovely is the MLS Deputy Executive Director for Finance and Support, which makes him feel important. Please don’t tell him the truth.

Self Pick-Up Service New At Most MLS Locations ometimes you need some help, or just want a member of our staff to walk you through something. Sometimes you want to do it yourself. When you receive notice that a book, DVD or CD you put on reserve has arrived at your neighborhood library and it’s ready to be checked out, maybe you just want to breeze in on your way home, check it out, and be on your way. Now we’ve made that action easier than ever. We call it Self Pick-Up and it’s perfect for the library customer on the run. Here’s how it works: You’ve been browsing our online catalog of titles and found two or three books you think you might want to take a look at. You asked that they be sent to the library that’s nearest to your home. (Self Pick-Up is now available at all MLS libraries except Del City and the Extensions.) When you go in to get them you go to the area where reserves are kept, usually near a staff desk so someone will be close at hand to give you some help if you need it. Your books will be shelved by the first four letters of your last name and the last four digits of your library card number. No one but

you will know that this “code” refers to you. Grab your books and proceed to the self-check station or the check-out desk to borrow the materials. No, there’s no catch to it—it’s that easy. Now you will have to use the same library card to check them out that you used to put them on reserve in the first place. Library cards, for reasons of personal privacy and financial responsibility, are non-transferable so not even someone in your immediate family can use his/her card to check out items you reserved using your card. We think that’s the best way to go, and Oklahoma State Statute, Title 65, Section 1-105 demands that we do it that way. If you know that someone else in your family if going to pick the book up, go ahead and reserve it with that person’s card. And no, sorry, but we can’t make exceptions even if you send written permission. We have over 400,000 customers so you can see that making special arrangements just isn’t feasible. If you want some help the first time you go through this process, don’t hesitate to ask one of the staff. Helping to put the best library material in your hand is what we do best.

For David McCullough, Writing History Is An Adventure Historians may not be the rock stars of the literary world but after reading a book by David McCullough you may wonder why not. 10 n info METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM magazine n April 2013

nd thanks to the Library Endowment Trust and the Chickasaw Nation, you can not only read McCullough but meet him, too, when he visits Oklahoma City as the guest speaker at the Library Endowment Trust’s 11th annual Literary Voices dinner on April 18 at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club at 7pm. His subject will be “Adventures in Writing History.” McCullough will also present a reading for children on April 19 at a children’s literacy event. “A special honor for Mr. McCullough,” said MLS Development Coordinator Chris Carroll,” is that he will deliver the keynote address in Dallas later this year during the 50th anniversary memorial event for the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.” David McCullough has been called “a master of the art of narrative history.” He is twice winner of the Pulitzer Prize, twice winner of the National Book Award, and has received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award. His most

recent book, The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris, the number one New York Times best seller, has been called “dazzling,” “an epic of ideas … history to be savored.” McCullough has also been a familiar presence on public television -- as host of “Smithsonian World,” “The American Experience,” and narrator of numerous documentaries, including Ken Burns’s “The Civil War.” McCullough will be introduced at the dinner by Governor Bill Anoatubby of the Chickasaw Nation, Presenting Sponsor of this year’s Literary Voices event. “This is a perfect event for the Chickasaw Nation to support,” said Gov. Anoatubby. “Improving the quality of life for all Oklahomans and helping to ensure a literate society is part of our mission and we are delighted to welcome David McCullough as this year’s speaker.” The dinner benefits the Library Endowment Trust, which has funded support of the services and programs of the Metropolitan Library System since 1986. The event will also honor The Friends of the Metropolitan Library System as the 2013 Lee B. Brawner Lifetime Achievement Award. The 2013 Literary Voices event is almost sold out, but a few tickets remain. Call Chris Carroll at (405) 6063760, or send him an email at ccarroll@metrolibrary.org, for more information. . . . Discovering New Literary Treasures

Bulgakov, Mikhail. The Master and Margarita. FICTION/BUL

Mo Yan. Life and Death Are Wearing Me Out. FICTION/MO

This is one of the great works of literary satire, written in 1940 but unpublished until 1966, 13 years after one of its main targets, Joseph Stalin, was laid to unrest. The novel is made up of three interwoven stories: one is set during the reign of Pontius Pilate; one is set during modern times and is about the two title characters; and one, the most blistering of them all, concerns Satan and his merry band of followers set loose in Muscovite literary society.

Chinese novelist Mo Yan won the Nobel Prize in Literature last year. He is from a small farming community, an area he makes the setting of many of his books. This one is a phantasmagorical tale that blends elements of whimsy, satire and tragedy. It’s the story of Ximen Nao, a landowner beloved by his tenants for his kindness and understanding. Then Chairman Mao’s reforms come to pass and he is killed by the very people he has been so good to. But not to worry—he returns in the forms of a donkey, an ox, a pig and a dog tell us what is going on. April 2013 n info METROPOLITAN LIBRARY SYSTEM magazine n 31
