Cody Hodgson scored the shootout winner Tuesday to give the Vancouver Canucks a 3-2 victory over Edmonton that sent the Oilers to a sixth straight road loss. Hodgson beat Edmonton netminder Devan Dubnyk in the fifth round of the shootout with a shot that trickled between his pads. Alex Edler had scored earlier in the shootout for the Canucks while Ales Hemsky extended the tiebreaker for the Oilers by beating goalie Roberto Luongo on a backhand. It was the second shootout game in as many nights for the Oilers. The win enabled Vancouver (30-15-4) to move to within three points of the idle Detroit Red Wings, who lead the Western Conference. The Canucks have won four of their last six heading into the all-star break. Daniel Sedin and David

The Canucks handed the Oilers their 13th loss in 14 road games. when Hall fired into Luongo’s right pad. Both goalies had solid games as Vancouver outshot Edmonton 35-32, in-

cluding 8-3 in overtime. Hall tied the game on Edmonton’s only power play with 4:11 remaining in the third period. He tipped defenceman Corey Potter’s point blast through heavy traffic behind Luongo after Canuck defenceman Dan Hamhuis was sent off for interference. Booth gave the Canucks a 2-1 lead five minutes into

the period as he was being tackled by Hall when he knocked in a puck lying in the crease. It got there after Kesler tipped Chris Higgins’ centring pass on net. The goal was the eighth of the season and third in three games for Booth in his fourth game back since missing 18 with a knee injury.

Fielder signs with Tigers: Source Free agent first baseman Prince Fielder and the Detroit Tigers agreed Tuesday on a nine-year, $214-million US contract that fills the AL Central champions’ need for a power hitter, a person familiar with the deal said. CBS first reported the agreement. The person told The Associated Press that the deal was subject to a physical. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract was not yet complete. Detroit boldly stepped up in the Fielder sweep-

of the game’s premier sluggers, pairing him with Miguel Cabrera. With Cabrera and Fielder, Detroit will begin this season with two players under age 30 with at least 200 career homers. According to STATS LLC, that’s happened only once before. At the start of the 1961 season, the Milwaukee Braves featured 29-year-old Eddie Matthews (338 homers) and 27-year-old Hank Aaron (219). Fielder has averaged 40 homers and 113 RBIs over the past five years. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
