Klum goes for balance

Heidi Klum doing New Balance line in a chronological order Starting off with daywear Heidi Klum has a closet full of stylish clothes for her public life on TV, red carpets and the party scene. It was harder to find things to pull off the cool mom look, though, so she decided she'd start designing them herself. Klum already dabbled in design with jewellery, jeans and maternity, but, of course, she is best known for modelling and TV’s Project Runway. Her New Balance collection, to be sold exclusively on Amazon, is her most complete design project. “I definitely design with myself in mind — I always have myself in mind with everything that I do. I think it’s all organic to me,” Klum says. “I shouldn’t have to wrack my brain of what I’m going to do next. It’s what I do with all my business. It always comes out of something I love.” And, she says, she loves uncomplicated clothes that make sense that also pull your look together. Being who she is, with the career she’s had thus

far, Klum says she can’t ever be “schlumpy” — even when she's not on official duty. “I asked myself, ‘How do I start my day?’ and then I worked in chronological order. These are the go-to pieces that are stylish and comfortable for running errands. ... The collection will build out to other things, maybe someday there’ll be something for a sexy dinner with your husband.” But, like she says, the pieces right now focus on active daywear: loose tunics over seamless leggings, microfibre hoodies over ruched cropped pants, a boyfriend-sweater dress.

Rochette steps into design role Joannie Rochette is bringing her artistry from the ice to the world of style with a portion of funds from the effort going to support a cause close to the figure skater’s heart. The Olympic bronze medallist has teamed up with Birks to design a sterling silver, heart-shaped pendant which also bears her signature. A portion of the sales revenue will be donated to iheartmom. The University of Ottawa Heart Institute initiative aims to influence women's attitudes and understanding of heart disease as well as raise funds for research and treatment.

The cause of heart health resonates strongly with Rochette. Her mother, Therese, died of a massive heart attack in Vancouver before her daughter competed in the Winter Games earlier this year. “Following the 2010 Winter Olympics and after losing my mother to a heart attack, I offered my support to the iheartmom campaign,” Rochette said in a statement. “My vision for this jewellery piece designed with Birks was that of a heart with simple, clean lines, that would represent not only the love I have for my mother.” CANADIAN PRESS
