EMAILS SUGGEST TRUMP JR 16 SERVICE MEMBERS US MISSILE HITS TEST WELCOMED RUSSIAN HELP KILLED IN PLANE CRASH TARGET AS TENSION RISES

Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s eldest son eagerly agreed last year to meet a woman he was told was a Russian government lawyer who might have information incriminating Democratic rival Hillary Clinton as part of Moscow’s official support for his father, according to an email chain released on Tuesday. The emails in the chain were between Donald Trump Jr., who posted it on Twitter, and

Rob Goldstone, a publicist who helped to arrange the June 9, 2016, meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya, who says she is a private lawyer and denies having Kremlin ties. “If it’s what you say I love it,” Trump Jr. said in a June 3, 2016 email that was part of the chain arranging the meeting. U.S. officials were investigating the cause of a military transport plane crash that killed 16 service members a day earlier, leaving a 5-mile trail of wreckage in rural northern Mississippi. The KC-130 Hercules aircraft disappeared from air traffic control radar over Mississippi after taking off from Cherry Point, North Carolina. It plunged into a field at approximately 4 p.m. on Monday in Mississippi’s LeFlore

County, about 100 miles north of Jackson, the state capital. Fifteen Marines and one Navy sailor were onboard, the U.S. Marine Corps said. The names of the deceased were being withheld until family members were notified. Further details on the crash were not released by military officials, but Gen. Robert Neller, Commandant of the Marine Corps, pledged “a thorough investigation into the cause of this tragedy.”

The United States said on Tuesday it shot down a simulated, incoming intermediate-range ballistic missile similar the ones being developed by countries like North Korea, in a new test of the nation’s defenses. Planned months ago, the U.S. missile defense test over the Pacific Ocean has gained significance after North Korea’s July 4 launch of an intercontinental ballistic

missile heightened concerns about the threat from Pyongyang. The test was the first-ever of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system against an incoming IRBM, which experts say is a faster and more difficult target to hit than shorter-range missiles. The U.S. Missile Defense Agency said the IRBM was designed to behave similarly to the kinds of missiles that could threaten the United States.

GROUP SUES TRUMP FOR BLOCKING TWITTER USERS

5

A free-speech group on Tuesday sued Donald Trump for blocking Twitter users from his @realDonaldTrump account, arguing the practice violates the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The lawsuit, brought by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University in New York and joined by seven individual Twitter users, claims Trump blocked a number of accounts whose owners replied to his tweets with comments that

criticized, mocked or disagreed with the president. Trump’s blocking of the accounts amounted to an unconstitutional effort to suppress dissent, according to the lawsuit filed in federal court in the Southern District of New York. Because Trump frequently turns to Twitter to make policy statements, his account qualifies as a public forum from which the government cannot exclude people on the basis of their views, according to the lawsuit.

sassinated solely because of what she represented and for the responsibility she embraced,â€? NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said at Tuesday’s service in the Bronx, just about two blocks from where the officer was killed last week. “All her killer could see was a uniform, although Miosotis was so much more.â€? Familia was a mother to three: 20-year-old Genesis Villella, and 12-yearold twins Peter and Delilah. To them, O’Neill said that “your mom didn’t die in vain. Your mom’s legacy will never fade from importance in memory. Your mom made it her mission to make your home, New York City, a better and safer place for everyone. And I vow to you we will continue to find our way forward in her honor because that’s what cops do.â€? Villella said that Tuesday’s service took place 12 years to the day since her mother joined the NYPD. “When I was a little kid, I was just so proud and so excited my mom was a cop. I still am so proud of her,â€? she said. Mayor Bill de Blasio said that Familia was a hero “in her service to this city, in her love for her family and all she did for everyone she came across in lifeâ€? and that she “died a patriot defending all of us. “My friends, Police Officer Miosotis Familia did not die in vain,â€? de Blasio concluded. “She made sure to teach the next

generation well, and she showed all of us the right way. Now it is up to us to live it.â€? Familia’s sister, Mercedes Proefrock, urged those in attendance to “show love. This has to stop. Please, if you see a police officer in blue, hug them and say thank you. That’s all she would have asked for.â€? CBS2 reported that about 25,000 police officers from all over the United States and the world flocked to the Bronx for Familia’s funeral. “To Genny, Peter, and Delilah, here we are today literally surrounded by a sea of blue as far as the eye can see outside this building, and know this — our family will always be with yours,â€? Commissioner O’Neill said at the conclusion of his remarks. “We don’t ever forget, we will always be here for you in this city. Familia was fatally shot in the head in the Fordham Heights neighborhood of the Bronx in the early morning hours of July 5. Alexander Bonds, the 34-year-old gunman, was shot and killed after he pulled a revolver on officers in pursuit as he fled the scene. His girlfriend later said that Bonds had paranoid schizophrenia and was “acting erratically and that he was paranoid by policeâ€? prior to the shooting last Wednesday, to the point where she called 911 just hours beforehand.

Donald Trump Jr. on Russia meeting: ‘In retrospect, I probably would have done things a little differently’ Donald Trump Jr. told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Tuesday night that although he “probably would have done things a little differently,” the meeting with a Russian lawyer during his father’s campaign was “a nothing.” “I wouldn’t have even remembered it until you started scouring through this stuff,” the president’s

son said. “For me, this was opposition research,” Trump Jr. told Hannity. “They had something, you know, maybe concrete evidence to all the stories I’d been hearing about … so I think I wanted to hear it out. But really it went nowhere, and it was apparent that wasn’t what the meeting was about.

“I had been reading about scandals that people were probably underreporting for a long time, so maybe it was something that had to do with one of those things,” Trump Jr. added. “I didn’t know if there was any credibility. I didn’t know if there was anything behind it. I can’t vouch for the information. Someone sent me an

email. I can’t help what someone sends me. I read it; I responded accordingly.” Trump Jr.’s meeting and emails have attracted the interest of politicians on both sides of the aisle amid the ongoing investigation into possible collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign, according to reports. Donald Trump Jr. emails may be evidence of crime, experts say Emails could be the “smoking gun” that the Trump campaign was colluding with Russia. GETTY IMAGES

ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan

erin.tiernan@metro.us

Donald Trump Jr.’s emails released on Tuesday offer fairly clear evidence that the president’s son broke campaign finance law, according to legal experts. It is illegal to solicit or accept campaign contributions from foreign nationals. Campaign contributions are defined as “anything of value,” which includes information and political opposition research. In emails the president’s eldest son posted to Twitter just as The New York Times published an exposé, he explains he met with a Russian lawyer last June to get “incriminating” information on Hillary Clinton. In the email thread with a subject line that read, “Russia — Clinton — private and confidential,” Trump Jr. wrote that he’d “love” to get the information that a mutual contact of Trump and the Russians said would “incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to” his father. Rick Hasen, a campaign finance expert and law professor at University of California, Irvine, said it’s “hard to see how there is not a serious case here of solicitation.” “Trump Jr. appears to have knowledge of the foreign source and is asking to see it,” he said. Norm Eisen, special counsel for ethics and government reform under former President Barack Obama, said the Donald Trump Jr. email “clearly violates campaign finance law and likely implicates Don Jr. and campaign un-

der conspiracy statute.” President Donald Trump, however, defended his son, calling him a “high-quality person.” In an off-camera afternoon White House briefing, Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders read a prepared statement from the president. “My son is a high-quality person, and I applaud his transparency,” the statement read. Trump had so far been silent on the growing controversy around the meeting last summer, which went public on Saturday. Washington-based government watchdogs Common Cause filed complaints with the Federal Election Commission and the Justice Department on Tuesday asking them to investigate Trump Jr. for soliciting a foreign contribution. “Whether or not he actually received that information does not matter in the eyes of the law. Trump’s solicitation of the information is what constitutes the violation,” Paul S. Ryan, Common Cause vice president for policy and litigation, said in a statement. The emails refer to “some official documents,” and Ryan said if Trump Jr. accepted any documents as a campaign contribution from a foreign national, it would be an additional crime. A spokesman for Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government, declined to comment, the HuffPost reported.

No, the Kosciuszko Bridge won’t be blown to bits Whenever its demolition does happen, it likely won’t be explosive at all. NIKKI M. MASCALI @MetroNewYork

nikki.mascali@metro.us

The Kosciuszko Bridge did not meet its demise Tuesday after all. The original bridge, which connects Brooklyn and Queens, opened in 1939 and closed in April when the first phase of its replacement, also called the Kosciuszko Bridge, opened to traffic after three years of construction. The first span, which is Queens-bound, cost $555 million to build and was the first major new bridge to open in more than 50 years, since the VerrazanoNarrows Bridge connecting Brooklyn and Staten Island opened in 1964. A July 11 demolition date for the original span floated around, and was picked up by advocates planning to celebrate its looming end, while others aimed to defend it from its ill fate — with wolves and swords. Everyone looking forward to a grand explosion of the bridge that had

caused countless headaches for thousands of New Yorkers that traverse it every day were surely disappointed. The center portion of the original Kosciuszko Bridge will be dismantled and lowered onto a barge in Newtown Creek before being taken to be recycled in New Jersey. The opposite sides of the original bridge will then be demolished, allowing work to begin on Phase II of the new Kosciuszko Bridge. Expected to open in 2020, that span will be Brooklyn-bound and add a 20-foot-wide walkway and bikeway. When both spans are open, there will be four lanes of traffic going into Brooklyn and five going into Queens. Until then, there will be three lanes in both directions on the new Queens-bound side. A Department of Transportation representative told the Brooklyn Daily Eagle that no date has been set to dismantle the original Kosciuszko Bridge. The bridge was opened in 1939 to replace the Meeker Avenue Bridge that had been in use since 1894. That bridge was known as the “Penny Bridge” because passengers paid one cent per foot to cross it.

A pair of teens made fidget spinners famous and got rich in the process Not only did the New York teens make money from fidget spinners, they became more popular at school.

Fidget spinners, a new craze that has basically divided the world into two camps: #TeamSpinner and #TeamStopIt, were created by two teenagers who made $350,000 in the first six months of sales. Fidget spinners are gadgets that look like airplane propellers or spinning car rims in a 50 Cent

video. They are used to help people with anxiety or OCD focus on tasks or to just annoy the hell out of school teachers. We have two 17-yearold high school students, Allan Maman and Cooper Weiss, to thank for it. Maman and Weiss founded Fidget360, one of the first companies to mass-produce fidget spinners after Maman was looking for a toy to play with to help his attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), he explained to CNBC. “I would say that initially a lot of adults probably saw fidget spinners and thought they were a dumb idea,” Maman told Mic.

“When I first started and showed my parents what I was making, they were like, ‘OK, so it spins. There’s nothing special or too neat about it.’ But once you’re a kid and you see, like, how good it is to have in class and how fun it is and how everyone wants one, you get it.” “I think kids or teens have a unique ability to see markets for certain products before older people,” he continued. “Especially when it comes to Gen Z, kids are the first ones to pick up on that stuff, and now with the internet, we can just make it for ourselves.” After seeing fidget spinners on Etsy, Maman decided to use the 3-D

Since they were making mad spinner money, the two young entrepreneurs purchased their own 3-D printer and set up shop in the basement of Weiss’ parents’ house. The teens admit they made a mistake when they decided against making the spinners with injection molding in China, a high-volume manufacturing process that injects the medium into a mold. “If we got the injection molding during that time, all of those [sales] would have been ours, Weiss told CNBC.

An employee’s request for a ‘mental health day’ has gone viral Would you be brave enough to ask your boss? ERIN TIERNAN @ErinTiernan

erin.tiernan@metro.us

Study after study has shown the personal and productivity benefits of a mental health day for employees, but the stigma still surrounds the concept in most workplaces. It’s a stigma Madalyn Parker is trying to break. The web developer sent Twitter into a tizzy after she emailed her boss and co-workers to tell them why she would be out of the office. “I’m taking today and tomorrow to focus on my mental health. Hopefully I’ll be back next week refreshed and back to 100

[percent],â€? she wrote. The response from Parker’s CEO was so supportive she decided to share it on Twitter. Here was the CEO’s response: “Hey Madalyn,â€? CEO Ben Congleton began, “I just wanted to personally thank you for sending emails like this. Every time you do, I use it as a reminder of the importance of using sick days for mental health — I can’t believe this is not standard practice at all organizations. You are an example to us all, and help cut through the stigma so we can all bring our whole selves to work.â€? The tweet has since gone viral with more than 10,500 retweets and over 34,000 likes since it was posted on June 30. Parker has struggled with anxiety, depression and suicidal

It’s like summer with sprinkles on top. Madalyn Parker is trying to get rid of the stigma around mental health. TWITTER/@MADALYNROSE

about being open about my mental health,” she tweeted. But it eventually got bad enough where she felt she needed to talk about it with her bosses — against even her own mother’s advice. Her bosses at Olark Live Chat were receptive, though. She even worked with them to engineer a change in the company culture and rework its

sick leave policy to include time for mental health days. “I feel incredibly lucky that my personal experience has played out this way. I know that it is more the exception than the rule,” she said on Medium. Since then she’s been on a mission to end the stigma around talking about mental health and taking care of mental health — that’s why she

sent the email to her team. Twitter was overwhelmingly supportive of Parker’s advocacy, but one user wondered, “Who needs to know what kind of sick I am when I log sick leave?” “I’m specific to be an example so my team knows that they can feel comfortable taking sick leave for mental health, even if they don’t say it,” Parker replied.

Why Knee Arthritis Sufferers Of Almost All Ages Are Opting For Newest Medical Procedures Before Surgery . . . Fraction of the cost, minimal risk and little to no downtime amongst top reasons By Matt Edgar America’s Health Writer New York City - Everyone has said it at one time or another. If I had only known about “this” sooner - things would be very different today. That’s what many knee arthritis pain sufferers are saying about this technology and treatment. “We all know that countless lives are being saved every year because of early detection and better treatment ” noted the clinic director at the NY Pain MD in New York City. “The same holds true for treating arthritis pain. I believe we are having so much success at NY Pain MD because of two factors: One is we are using advanced medical technology and treatments a lot of “If you have knee arthritis pain, viscosupplementation might be the answer you are looking for. The director believes one of the most important factors for the success of viscosupplementation is making sure you are getting it into the joint space precisely. That’s why the doctors at NY Pain MD use advanced imaging technology to apply Precision Arthritis Targeting during every treatment. A device called the "C-Arm" allows the doctor to see into the joint and actually watch the medicine be applied exactly where it is supposed to. Research shows that performing procedures without Precision Arthritis Targeting (P.A.T.T.)can result in missing the joint space as much as 30% of the time. Modern Doctor's FINALLY Offering These Special Treatments Right Here In New York City Hundreds of arthritis sufferers from tri state area calling weekly to find out if treatment is right for them.Often covered by insurance. If you qualify for this treatment, it might be one of the happiest days of your life. That’s because, for the past year and a half, hundreds NY Pain MD of knee pain sufferers have New York City. That’s when their specially trained-doctors added cutting-edge arthritis treatments to their already successful comphrensive knee pain relief program. Viscosupplementation is unique because - eventhough it is manufactured by a pharmaceutical company, it is NOT considered a drug because it is a natural substance with an incredible story.

Why So Many Want It You see, when you suffer with arthritis - the lubricatThis means instead of gliding smoothly - your bones start to rub and grind against each other. This causes a little pain in the beginning - but over time the pain steadily gets worse until it is excruciating.

Like “Joint Oil” Viscosupplementation works so well because it is like ‘joint oil.” It is a natural substance that contains one of the natural building blocks of the synovial fluid that lubricates your knee. Scientists and researchers discovered this natural building block to synovial fluid in the rooster’s comb - that big red thing on top of the roosters head. It is extracted from the roosters comb, purified and concentrated. They have also developed medical lubricants that are also natural but made a bit like yogurt and "cultured" into highly effective arthritis pain-fighting medical lubricants. When introduced directly into your knee joint, it is like squirting oil on a rusty door hinge. Viscosupplementation allows your joints to glide more smoothly eliminating a lot of the rubbing, grinding and pain.

Can Supplements Do The Same Thing? No. Glucosamine and chondroitin and other supplements are much different. You can only get this from a doctor and it often helps knee pain sufferers who got limited or no success from glucosamine and chondroitin. Beware of unsubstantiated claims made by supplements to do what this advanced medical procedure does.

Why You Should Try This Even If You’ve Already Had Similar Treatments Without Results... “We have been able to help so many knee pain sufferers even many who have already tried other treatments like Synvisc, Supartz, Orthovisc and even Hyalgan. This is because our treating doctors always use “Precision Arthritis Targeting Technology”. This allows us to place he Viscosupplementation exactly where is needs to be. Studies show doctors doing joint injections without echnology can miss the joint up to 30% of the time.” noted the Director of Center NY Pain MD is a state of the art medical facility offering nly the best technology.

Advanced Medical Technology Can Make All The Difference: T Ňuorososcopic imaging allows doctors to see directly into the knee joint so supposed to. Studies show that procedures done without this technology can miss the joint up to 30% of This is one reason NY Pain MD uses this P.A.T. Imaging Technology. with each and every treatment. And that’s not all “Every case is individual. Some patients get quite a bit of relief right away - others take a little more time. But most have been extremely happy. We’ve noted results lasting no less than 6 months for many but up to 2 years for some patients.. Patients who were suffering for years with bad knee pain are getting their lives back... going for walks again and exercising. It’s amazing to see. They tell all their friends - that’s why we are swarmed. After getting treatment and feeling better, many patients have decided to cancel their total knee replacement surgeries.” added the director.

Jennifer Garner is nobody’s fool Just three months after Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner filed for divorce in April, not-as-sad Batman has a new, er, Lady Robin. Last week, People reported that the 44-year-old actor and “Saturday Night Live” producer Lindsay Shookus are officially an item. Apparently the two lovebirds have a bit of a history together. Multiple sources told Us Weekly that the two had an affair back in 2013, two years prior to Ben and Jen’s separation in 2015. And now we’ve learned that Garner knew about their illicit history, and confronted Shookus

After endless back and forth between Dunham via Instagram, BARC (the facility where she adopted Lamby) and the Zen Dog, where Dunham surrendered Lamby after four years of challenging behavior, the woman who adopted Lamby took her own turn to speak out. She confirmed, of course, that Lamby is “living a great life!” And “showing tremendous progress!” Here’s the thing: Why are we talking about this at all? Dunham definitely tends to be an easy target — what, with her endless bevy of ignorant comments and continuing to act like race isn’t really a thing — but damn, over this dog who is just trying to mind his business and live his new life? No word from The Rock yet, or whether or not this is his doing, but at this point, having a wrestler-turnedactor-turned-politician wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen to our country. Especially seeing as our current presidency is akin to a poorly scripted reality show as is.

‘Friends From College’ is a bourgeois ‘Friends’ Netflix’s new series also revolves around a group of wacky friends living in New York. MATT JUUL @RunTheJuuls

matthew.juul@metro.us

So no one told you life — after college — was gonna be this way. Cue the clapping. From “Friends” to “How I Met Your Mother,” shows about wacky pals living in New York has pretty much turned into its own genre over the years. Now, Netflix is putting a bourgeois spin on the sitcom trope with “Friends From College.” The eight-episode halfhour series falls a bit short of being a complete hit like the NBC and CBS classics. However, “Friends From College” does provide plenty of laughs with its cast of privileged but no less zany characters. The show revolves Ethan and Lisa, a semi-

successful couple in their late 30s played by “Key & Peele” star Keegan-Michael Key and “HIMYM” alum Cobie Smulders, who reunite with their old Harvard buddies after moving back to the Big Apple. Although the duo enjoys hanging out with their pals again, it’s not an easy situation to navigate for Ethan, as he’s been involved in a years-long affair with their mutual friend Sam (Annie Parisse), who’s also married. Unlike Chandler and the gang, the “Friends From College” group isn’t nearly as likable, mainly because their problems aren’t really relatable to folks outside of the Upper West Side. Sure, the “Friends” crew wasn’t exactly strapped for cash, but they weren’t snorting Adderall at midnight to meet work deadlines or bothering fertility doctors at posh restaurants. The beautiful but bourgeois New York settings are part of the joke, though, as the

show doesn’t shy away from making fun of the upper-class lifestyle. Not everyone will like Key’s adulterous Ethan, but he’s got that awkwardyet-kind Ross vibe that works well with Parisse’s Sam, who’s as fashionable as Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel, with a bit more snark. Meanwhile Nat Faxon’s Nick and Jae Suh Park’s Marianne are like Harvard-educated versions of Joey and Phoebe. Although Key and the main cast turn in solid performances, it’s the guest appearances that steal the show. Billy Eichner is hilarious as the deadpan Dr. Felix Forzenheim, a love interest for Fred Savage’s Max. And Kate McKinnon shines as an off-the-wall young adult author. “Friends From College” isn’t perfect, but it’s worthy of a weekend binge. Especially if you’re sick of watching “Friends” reruns. “Friends from College” premieres July 14 on Netflix.

Andrea Savage on redefining the sitcom mom With her fun and raunchy new series, “I’m Sorry.” RACHAEL VAUGHAN CLEMMONS @rachaelclemz

rachael.clemmons@metro.us

When Andrea Savage created “I’m Sorry,” she took inspiration from comedies that deal with the realities of everyday life, like “Master of None” and “Louie.” But she was looking to add a little something to it. “I wanted to do a pure comedy,” says the writer and “Veep” actress over the phone. “It shows a couple that actually likes each other and gets a kick out of each other, because you don’t see that. Everyone’s miserable on TV.” So what does a nonmiserable television series look like? With “I’m Sorry,” it’s a decidedly light and raunchy take on your standard sitcom. The series, premiering July 12 on TruTV, follows

Savage took inspiration for her series from hits like “Louie” and “Master of None.”

a semifictionalized Savage in her day-to-day life in Los Angeles — from coffee sessions with her writing partner to cringeworthy brunches with her family. And it showcases the 44-year-old alongside an all-star com-

to improv groups in high school or college,” she says. While studying political science at Cornell, she took an acting class — where she met future “SNL” alum Chris Parnell — and he persuaded her

to join famed improv troupe the Groundlings. And the rest, as they say, is history. Fast-forward a couple of decades, and Savage is a comedy veteran of both television (“Episodes” and “iZombie) and film (“Step Brothers,” “Sleeping With Other People”). And she’s made some fam o u s friends a l o n g the way. Heavyweights like Will Ferrell, Adam McKay a n d g u y s behind the Lonely Island have roles GETTY

behind the camera on “I’m Sorry.” “That’s the great thing about comedy,” says Savage. “We all do each other’s stuff. We’re a community.” Star power aside, “I’m Sorry” explores the life outside of your typical sitcom mom — and blasts it to pieces. “I wanted to write a nuanced multidimensional woman who is 40 and who happens to be a mom — but that isn’t the only defining thing about her,” she continues. “I don’t ever take the piss out of anyone but myself.” Fret not, though: “I’m Sorry” may have its moments of nuance, it’s definitely not without its naughty sides. The third episode, for example, features a character who considers ice in her, uh, rear orifice foreplay. And it’s based on a real-life experience Savage had with a friend of a friend. “I was so fascinated,” she says in awe. “I had so many questions. What kind of ice was it? Was it crushed? Was it whole? How long does it take to melt?” she asks. “I hope peop l e sort of know that [these outrageous s i t u a tions] are real. If you know it’s real, then you’re like, ‘Well it’s not so crazy.’”

Like her “Broad City” alter-ego, Abbi Jacobson also loves to draw. Before co-creating and co-starring in “Broad City,” the 33-year-old aspired to a career in art. The Pennsylvania native comes from a family of artists and attended the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) before catching the acting bug. When she moved to NYC at the age of 23, it was with the goal of “juggling these impossible careers” of both comedy and art. Ten years later, Jacobson is obviously better known for comedy, but she hasn’t abandoned her visual side. Last fall, she published “Carry This Book,” an illustrated

imagining of what fictional and famous people, from Homer Simpson to Anna Wintour, carry around in their purses, and before that, a coloring book for NYC and San Francisco. She returns to the art world with her podcast, “A Piece of Work,” a 10-part collaboration with WNYC and MoMA which debuted Monday.

In “A Piece of Work,” Jacobson basically hangs at MoMA and talks about art with friends and fellow creatives like Hannibal Buress, Questlove and Tavi Gevinson. She also chats with MoMA curators and educators. Here’s why we love “A Piece of Work” so far: It makes art more accessible

The culture around fine art can be intimidating, and Jacobson gets that. “Sometimes when people go into museums, they see all these things on the walls and they’re like, ‘What am I supposed to get out of this? What is the artist’s intention? Am I having the correct feeling?’” she says on the first episode. Instead, “A Piece of

Hannibal Buress calls BS on conceptual art In the premiere, comedian Hannibal Buress joins Jacobson to talk about Marcel Duchamp’s “Bicycle Wheel.” His commentary provides comic relief and nails how so many of us feel about conceptual art. “We’re not supposed to spin it, are we?” “That just look like some high shit: ‘What if I put the wheel, in a stool?’” “Maybe he’s just trolling?” Jacobson talks about her life Obviously we’ve been fangirling, but it’s a treat to learn more about the real-life Abbi behind the “Broad City” character.

In the debut, she tells of first moving to NYC and starting a greeting card company called “Imagine That.” She would slip her greeting cards in the racks of the MoMA gift shop, in the hopes that someone would pick one up and discover her. No one ever did, but “you gotta hustle in NYC!” You actually learn about art Jacobson knows her stuff. She also chats with MoMA curators Ann Temkin and Ann Umland, who lend their expertise. And when she explains that Duchamp pioneering conceptual art “opened a floodgate that redefined what art could be and set the stage for the whole century,” you really do feel like you’re listening to an art-history professor lecture — one you definitely want to get high with after class. “A Piece of Work” airs Mondays and Wednesday through Aug. 9.

Macabre, but hopeful Joan Cornellà’s work is what our modern world needs — see it at his first NYC gallery show. BRANDON HARDIN @MetroNewYork letters@metro.us

Despite suffering gunshot wounds, losing limbs and experiencing gruesome burns with alarming regularity, the characters in Joan Cornellà’s comics keep on smiling. They’re both the stuff of nightmares and oddly hopeful at the same time — making the best of a bad situation. Famous on the internet after unleashing

his absurd slice-of-life sketches on Facebook five years ago, the Spanish artist is coming to New York for his first solo exhibition at Chelsea’s Josée Bienvenu Gallery. The show runs July 14-30 and will feature new canvas paintings and limited-edition illustrations, and the artist himself will drop by from time to time and sign copies of his new book, “SOT.” To attend, pre-book your visit and pay $8 at the door. Cornellà avoids text in his vibrant work, letting his unsettling images do the heavy lifting of giving images of apparent cruelty meaning. But what pushes his art from

macabre to black humor is the vein of humanity that runs through it. Take Cornellà’s cover for Wilco’s “Schmilco” album, created with Stefania Lusini. It features a man grinning as he electrocutes himself to power a record player so a little girl can dance. Gruesome, yes, but accurate: Kindness requires a happy sacrifice. Without the happiness it’s obligation, and without sacrifice it’s selfishness.

That selfishness is visible throughout a body of work also that focuses

on the very modern issue of pervasive narcissism and how we present ourselves versus how others see us: Gushing blood and missing an arm, a woman runs into a hospital not to have the wound closed, but to get a more attractive face. In another piece, a man’s phone replaces his head, which is itself perched on his selfie stick, allowing him to be the audience he is seeking in the first place. It’s the final perfect, closed loop of a social system where the only self-reflection is in a mirror. An uncomfortable initial impression gives way to smirks of surprise before ending in laughing bewilderment. In this, the exhibit is sure to be like his art. Go, and if you find yourself

The absurdity of modern life collides with an unusual faith in humanity’s basic goodness in Joan Cornella’s work. @SIRJOANCORNELLA, TWITTER

chuckling at the cartoonish horror that awaits, don’t worry. Because let’s be honest: If you save someone with the Heimlich maneuver, only to have the dislodged food blind a woman on a bike, who

then runs into a gardener, who bumbles into a man and shears off his head, sending it through a basketball hoop, you’d be tempted to cheer, too. That was an impossible shot, and you’re only human.

Amazon’s next NYC bookstore Online retailer will be taking 7,400 square feet in SoHo, sources tell TRD TheRealDeal.com is a daily blog and monthly magazine covering real estate in the New York metro area.

Jeff Bezos: Alexa, find me a space in SoHo to open another Amazon bookstore in New York City. Alexa: Finding 72 Spring St. Sources tell The Real Deal that the e-commerce colossus will be taking the 7,354-squarefoot space between Crosby and Lafayette Streets, currently home to a pop-up store for lingerie store Aerie. The re-

tail spot at 72 Spring includes 5,200 square feet on the ground floor and 2,154 square feet in the basement. It wasn’t immediately clear whether a lease has been finalized yet. RKF has been marketing the space, according to sources. The brokerage declined to comment. The building’s owner, Melvin Heller, and Amazon did not respond to requests for comment. Earlier this year, Seattle-based Amazon opened its first physical bookstore in New York at Related Cos.’ Time Warner Center. It also has plans to open a bookstore in Herald Square this summer, and considered opening a store in Related and Oxford Properties

Group’s Hudson Yards amid a broader push into brick-and-mortar retail. In June, Amazon agreed to buy Whole Foods for $13.7 billion, leading to some speculation that it plans to use the grocery store chain’s New York City stores and warehouses to distribute its goods. Amazon’s foray into brick-and-mortar retail comes at a desperate time for the market. According to Cushman & Wakefield’s latest retail market report, six of Manhattan’s 12 most important retail sub-

markets had an availability rate of 20 percent or more in the first quarter. Asking rents fell by 10 percent or more in SoHo, Times Square and Herald Square last year. Several major store operators like Macy’s and Ralph Lauren announced shop closings amid growing competition from online retailers over the past year. “I think retail is f—d, plain and simple,” developer Billy Macklowe said at a conference in April. Derek Jeter’s failed attempt at buying the Miami Marlins alongside former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush hasn’t deterred the New York Yankees legend from having another go at it. The surefire MLB Hall of Famer is leading another group of 15 investors that submitted a $1.2 billion deal to buy the franchise and appears to be “closing in on a deal,” with Marlins current owner Jeffrey Loria, per the New York Post. Among those investors is NBA legend Michael Jordan, who already owns the Charlotte Hornets. The two share a close relationship, with Jeter being a marquee member of Jordan’s classic brand. Jeter sported plenty of custom cleats throughout the years and saw Jordan

create the “RE2PECT” campaign during his final year in baseball. However, Jordan is not contributing an exorbitant amount to the group. Owning a team has been on Jeter’s wish list ever since he retired in 2014 as he wants to continue growing the game’s popularity to new heights, competing with the NBA and NFL. He was tantalizingly close to getting the Marlins with Bush after winning an auction for the team in April. One month later, Bush backed out. He has since reentered the c o n versation a s Marlins o w n e r, bringing on

Pitbull and others in order to submit another bid, as reported by Douglas Hanks of the Miami Herald on Tuesday. The Marlins have been in limbo for much of the 2017 calendar year. In February, Loria almost sold the franchise for $1.6 billion to the Kushner family. However, they backed out when it was rumored that Loria was going to become President Donald Trump’s ambassador to France. About a month later, Jeter emerged as a viable candidate for team ownership.

Yanks’ 1st-half report card Despite a severe discepancy in play, the Yankees are still in it as we await the second half of the season. ROBERT CRISCOLA @ItsGood2BeKing sports@metro.us

The New York Yankees looked to be cruising to another AL East title in the early stages of the 2017 season, but a prolonged slump has seen the Bombers fall to second place at the All-Star break. Here’s a breakdown of where the Yankees have excelled and where they’ve faltered:

Starters: B Despite Masahiro Tanaka’s struggles (7-8, 5.47 ERA), Yankees starters have the fifth-best ERA in the AL and are fourth in batting average allowed. Luis Severino has been pitching to his potential (5-4, 3.54 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 124 strikeouts), while grizzled vet CC Sabathia continues to be effective when healthy (7-3, 3.81 ERA). Michael Pineda (8-4, 4.39 ERA) has had trouble keeping the ball in the park (20 HR allowed) but was carrying a sub-four ERA through 14 starts.

Relievers: C+ The Yankees have the

third-best bullpen ERA in the American League, but the relief core has been dreadful of late. Tyler Clippard has allowed 15 earned runs in his last 10 appearances, sending his ERA soaring to 5.24. Dellin Betances’ oncemicroscopic 0.40 ERA is now 3.18 after some Jekyll-and-Hyde performances in his last eight outings. Aroldis Chapman carries a mediocre 3.48 ERA but is 8-of-10 in save opportunities.

Infielders: BFirst-base production has been hard to come by for the Bombers, as Greg Bird and Tyler Austin have been unable to stay healthy. Free-agent pickup Chris Carter was flat-out bad and was released. But beyond that, the infielders have been respectable. Starlin Castro and Didi Gregorius boast strong batting averages (.313 and .291, respectively) despite hitting the skids in early July, while Chase Headley continues to try his April form.

Outfielders: A Aaron Judge has taken baseball by storm, batting .329 with an ALleading 30 homers and 66 RBI. Jacoby Ellsbury has been good for a hit a game in nine of 11 starts since returning from the DL on June 26 (with five walks). Brett Gardner continues

to hit with regularity (.256, 15 HR, 40 RBIs) while flashing some speed on the basepaths (12 stolen bases). The Yankees’ newest phenom, Clint Frazier, has a 1.183 OPS through seven games. Aaron Hicks, hitting .290 with 10 homers and 37 RBIs, will be a welcome addition to the roster when he returns from the DL.

Catchers/DH: AGary Sanchez hasn’t lived up to the hype from last year but has been more than serviceable in 2017. Despite a 2-for-20 slump to end the first half, Sanchez sports a .276 average with 13 home runs and 40 RBI. Austin Romine, who is seeing more time as a first baseman, is holding the line, batting .231 with a pair of homers and 17 RBIs. Matt Holliday was cruising along with 15 homers and 47 RBIs before landing on the DL with an illness.

Manager: B There’s only so much moving and shaking Joe Girardi can do when everything falls apart at once, but the Yankees’ 45-41 record at the break is a solid one. Girardi’s modus operandi has always been “don’t panic,” but if things don’t turn around soon after the break, he’ll have to take action.

He could try letting his starters go deeper into games while relying less on a suddenly shaky bullpen.

Aries Make changes to the way you handle your job, responsibilities and the people you care about most. Don’t let anger step in and take control. Offer positive alternatives.

Libra Question anything that appears to be sketchy or doesn’t add up. It’s important to stay on top of the facts and to be precise when dealing with uncertainty or instability.

Taurus If you want to make changes, you are best off doing so secretively. Once you have everything in place and running functionally, the choices you made will be well received.

Scorpio Make a point to take better care of your health. Avoid indulgence, and strive to work and play equally hard. Balance will be the key to lowering stress.

Gemini Personal improvements will help boost your confidence and give you the wherewithal to pursue your goals. Update your skills and new possibilities will develop.

Sagittarius Don’t count on the information that someone offers. You’ll be railroaded into a situation that isn’t in your best interest. Choose intelligence over bravado.

Cancer A bargain isn’t worth it if you don’t have enough cash. Don’t waste money on things you don’t need. Emotionally fueled spending will result in added stress.

Capricorn Don’t walk away from someone or something just because you are shy or fear the unfamiliar. The knowledge and experience you gain will motivate you.

Leo Go over any contracts and financial matters that need to be tidied up. Knowing where you stand will ease stress and give you a chance to start something new.

Aquarius Listen carefully when dealing with partners. Someone is likely to leave out pertinent information to avoid upsetting you. Ask pointed questions and make changes.

Virgo Use innovative methods to take care of demanding people or burdensome responsibilities. It’s how you approach others that will make a difference.

Pisces Emotions will surface that could easily cost you if you aren’t honest about your feelings or expectations with someone you deal with today. EUGENIA LAST
