PENCE: TRUMP TRAVEL ORDER COMING IN DAYS

1

President Donald Trump plans to finalize a new order limiting travel to the United States in the coming days, his vice president said on Wednesday, after federal courts blocked the administration’s earlier travel ban. A White House source had previously said the new order was likely to be announced on Wednesday. More than two dozen lawsuits were filed in U.S. courts against

the Jan. 27 travel ban, which temporarily barred entry to the United States for people from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, as well as halting the U.S. refugee program. REUTERS

BALTIMORE COPS BUSTED CONWAY ‘INADVERTENTLY’ ON RACKETEERING PLUGGED PRODUCTS

2

Seven Baltimore police officers were arrested on Wednesday on federal racketeering charges for robbing and extorting up to $200,000 from victims, along with stealing guns and drugs, prosecutors said. Many of the alleged shakedowns took place while the Baltimore Police Department was under intense media scrutiny and facing a U.S. Justice Department civil rights investigation for

the 2015 police-involved death of a black man that plunged the largely African-American city into turmoil. A grand jury last week indicted six detectives and a sergeant on charges of extorting money and robbing residents, filing false court paperwork and making false overtime claims, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Maryland said. The indictment was unsealed on Wednesday. REUTERS

The White House told a government watchdog agency that Kellyanne Conway acted “inadvertently” when she publicly endorsed the clothing and jewelry line of Ivanka Trump, according to a letter the administration released. Conway came under criticism last month when she said on television that Americans should “go buy Ivanka’s stuff,” in comments that appeared to violate government

ethics rules prohibiting the use of public office to endorse products or advance personal business gains. In a letter to a government ethics watchdog agency, White House Deputy Counsel Stefan Passantino said he met with Conway after her comments and that she committed to follow the rules in the future. SNAP’S $3.4 BILLION IPO TOPS EXPECTATIONS

4

Snap Inc. priced its initial public offering above its target range on Wednesday, raising $3.4 billion as investors set aside concerns about its lack of profits and voting rights for a piece of the hottest tech IPO in years. At $17 a share, the parent of popular disappearingmessaging app Snapchat has a market valuation of roughly $24 billion, more than double the size of rival Twitter and the rich-

est valuation in a U.S. tech IPO since Facebook in 2012. The company had targeted a valuation of between $19.5 billion and $22.3 billion. The book was more than 10 times oversubscribed and Snap could have priced the IPO at as much as $19 a share, but the company wanted to focus on securing mutual funds as longterm investors rather than hedge funds looking to quickly sell, the source said. it. Sen. Casey plans town halls across Pennsylvania The first will be in Philadelphia later this month. ALEXIS SACHDEV @lexsachdev alexis.sachdev@metro.us

Democratic Sen. Bob Casey announced a series of town halls across the state, beginning later this month, citing growing calls from constituents for the face-to-face meetings. The time and place of the first, which will be in Philadelphia on March 12, is still to-bedetermined, Casey said in a tweet. “Having heard the demand of constituents for town hall-style events,

Casey will convene this event to engage directly with his constituents,” a statement from the senator’s office reads. Both Casey and his Republican counterpart, Sen. Pat Toomey, have faced criticism — though from different sources — for their presence in the public eye, or lack thereof. Casey was cited in an Associated Press report as one of many “vulnerable” Democratic senators who are avoiding town hall meetings. Meanwhile, protesters have convened outside Toomey’s Philadelphia office every week for three months, demanding a public meeting. Eleven people were

cited for disturbing the peace after staging a sitin at Toomey’s office on Tuesday, local news media reported. The protesters were demanding that Toomey schedule a town hall meeting. Toomey’s first town hall of the year was held as a phone conference on Feb. 16; he gained more backlash for its short notice and duration than praise for hearing his constituents. On the Dom Giordano radio show Wednesday morning, Toomey said he plans to hold a town hall in the future, but didn’t offer further details. There are no town halls currently on his schedule, his office told Metro.

the tax, company spokesman Dave DeCecco told Reuters in an email. The cuts will take place over the next few months and will include frontline and supervisory jobs, the company said. “If the tax is struck down or repealed, we plan to bring people back to work,” DeCecco said. PepsiCo, which also makes Frito Lays snacks and Doritos chips, has 423 employees at three locations in the city. The layoffs will occur at plants in North Philadelphia, South Philadelphia, and Wilmington.

The plants are run as independent businesses required to report profits and losses to the company. The layoff announcement follows reports from bottlers and supermarkets of steep beverage sale declines since the tax went into effect in January. Last month, Canada Dry Delaware Valley said it would lay off 35 people due to declining sales. Jeff Brown, who owns six ShopRite stores in the city, said he’s had to slash employee hours and believes as many as 300 jobs could be cut.

PepsiCo to cut jobs in Philly as sales lose fizz after soda tax PepsiCo Inc. said on Wednesday it would cut 80 to 100 jobs in Philadelphia because the city’s new sugar-sweetened beverage tax hurts demand for its products. The city imposed a tax of 1.5 cent per ounce on sugary and diet drinks to combat rising obesity and diabetes in the city. The tax became effective on Jan. 1 and the revenue will be used to finance the city’s expanded pre-K program. PepsiCo’s beverage sales fell 40 percent in the city because of

‘Pay with your face’ technology could mean the end to credit cards and bar codes The facial recognition innovation was one of 10 “Breakthrough Technologies” cited in an MIT publication. KRISTIN TOUSSAINT @kristindakota kristin.toussaint@metro.us

Imagine when you walk into work in the morning, rather than swipe a key card, facial recognition software instantly identifies you and unlocks the door. Or, if instead of making a purchase with your credit card or smartphone, you simply pay with your face. That innovation isn’t so far off, and is among the “10 Breakthrough Technologies” for 2017 recently featured on an annual list by MIT Technology Review, a magazine published by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Facial recognition software isn’t new, but its increasing level of accuracy is beginning to open up the possibilities for a wider audience, and a more practical use. That’s thanks in part to developments and advancements in artificial intelligence. The new technol-

ogy, which the magazine dubbed “pay with your face,” is now being tested and further developed in China. Multiple companies there are working on facial recognition abilities, including Baidu, the firm that runs the country’s most popular search engine. The idea of a face scan being so accurate it can substitute for tickets or credit cards is still in the early stages of development, said Brian Bergstein, the magazine’s editor-at-large. “But it’s very sci-fi,” he said. “It’s

so sophisticated — and may be so intrusive — that consumers in the U.S. could be skeptical about adopting it, Bergstein said. “In China, there are incredible amounts of surveillance cameras,” he said. Pay with your face technology is “layering convenience applications over the surveillance state.” “I don’t know how much acceptance that would have here, and maybe it’s a technology we should be uncomfortable with,” he added. Church seeks $100 million loan to pay priests’ victims The Archdiocese of New York is seeking permission for a $100 million mortgage on some of its valuable Manhattan property to fund its compensation program for people sexually abused by its priests, a spokesman said on Wednesday. The archdiocese said last October it would compensate people who had accused priests of abusing them as children, including those prevented by statutes of limitations from filing civil lawsuits. It said at the time it would seek loans to fund the payouts, which are being decided by two independent arbitrators. On Monday, the archdiocese filed a petition in state court in Manhattan seeking approval for a one-year mortgage from JPMorgan Chase on land it owns behind St. Patrick’s Cathedral; the Lotte New York Palace hotel is located on the site. The petition was necessary under a New York law

The archdiocese is accepting new applications from victims who had not previously come forward, and it will take out a longer-term loan once it has a clearer idea of the total compensation

amount later this year, Zwilling said. Under the first phase of the compensation program, 144 people who had previously complained of abuse filed claims. The archdiocese has made 64 offers of compensation so far, of which 44 have been accepted, Zwilling said. He said the archdiocese would not discuss the size of the payouts until the program was completed. Most cases of abuse happened two or three decades ago. REUTERS

Judge approves release of nightclub shooter’s widow A judge cleared the way on Wednesday for the widow of the gunman who killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, to be released from jail and also appeared to throw doubt on the strength of the government’s case against her. Noor Salman, 30, was arrested in California in January on federal charges she knew before the June 2016 shootings that her husband, Omar Mateen, was planning the attack and concocted a cover story for him. Prosecutors want Salman to remain jailed before her trial in Florida. But U.S. Magistrate Judge Donna Ryu said in an Oakland courtroom that the government had not shown Salman was a danger to the community or a serious flight risk. “I find the weight of the government evidence as debatable, Ryu added.

Commenting on the prosecutor’s charges against Salman, the judge said: “All the government assertions are hotly debated. Salman is charged with obstructing justice and aiding Mateen in his attempt to provide material support to a terrorist organization. Mateen was killed in a shootout with police after he took hostages during a three-hour standoff at the Pulse nightclub and carried out the deadliest mass shooting in modern

U.S. history. One of Salman’s lawyers, Linda Moreno, said the approved release “doesn’t usually happen in a so-called terrorism case.â€? Ryu gave prosecutors in Florida 48 hours to challenge her ruling, meaning Salman could not walk free from jail until Friday at the earliest. William Daniels, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Middle District of Florida, said by telephone that prosecutors would file a motion by Friday with a judge in Orlando challenging Salman’s release. Ryu likened Salman’s release to house arrest, ordering her to live with her uncle in Rodeo, California, and saying she could leave home only for court and medical appointments. Her conditional release will be secured with a $500,000 bond. REUTERS

Document: Trump administration has found only $20M in existing funds for wall The document said the funds would be enough to cover a handful of contracts for wall prototypes, but not enough to begin construction of an actual barrier. This means that for the wall to move forward, the White House will need to convince Congress to appropriate funds. President Donald Trump’s promise to use existing funds to begin immediate construction of a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border has hit a financial roadblock, according to a document seen by Reuters. The rapid start of construction, promised throughout Trump’s campaign and in an executive order issued in January on border security, was to be financed, according to the White House, with “existing funds and resources” of the Department of Homeland Security. But so far, the DHS has identified only $20 million that can be re-directed to the multi-billiondollar project, according to a document prepared by the agency and distributed to congressional budget staff last week. An internal report,

previously reported by Reuters, estimated that fully walling off or fencing the entire southern border would cost $21.6 billion - $9.3 million per mile of fence and $17.8 million per mile of wall. DHS officials did not respond to a request for comment on this story. Trump has said he will ask Congress to pay for what existing funds cannot cover and that Mexico will be pressured to pay back U.S. taxpayers at a later date. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan has said he will include funding for a border wall in the budget for next fiscal year. He has estimated the cost to be between $12 billion and $15 billion. Many Republican lawmakers have said they would vote against a plan that does not offset the cost of the wall with spending cuts. In the document it

submitted to Congress, the DHS said it would reallocate $5 million from a fence project in Naco, Arizona, that came in under budget and $15 million from a project to install cameras on top of trucks at the border. The surveillance project was awarded to Virginia-based Tactical Micro, but was held up due to protests from other contractors, according to the DHS document. The DHS only searched for extra funds within its $376 million budget for border security fencing, infrastructure and technology, so it would not have to ask for congressional approval to repurpose funding, according to the document. Contractors cannot begin bidding to develop prototypes until March 6 but more than 265 businesses already have listed themselves as “interested parties” on a government web site. REUTERS

Oprah for president? to break the glass ceiling by running for president. And Winfrey, as coy as ever, didn’t say yes — but to be completely fair, she didn’t say no, either. “I never considered the question even a possibility. I thought, Oh gee, I don’t have the experience, I don’t know enough. Now I’m thinking … oh!” I’ll take that as a yes, thank you very much.

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom are one-upping Gwyneth’s “conscious uncoupling:” They’re taking a “respectful, loving space” from their relationship. Their reps confirmed as much in a statement to People,“before rumors or falsifications get out of hand.” Mmhm. Perry, 32, and Bloom, 40, were seen together as recently as Sunday for the annual Vanity Fair Oscars party, because neither of them can resist a photo op. The two dated for about a year, and in that year, they were commit-

ted to doing the most. There was that time they went paddle boarding with a special appearance from Bloom’s penis. And for Halloween, they pulled the ultimate couple’s costume, with Perry as Hillary and Bloom as Donald, because America hadn’t been traumatized enough by the presidential race at that point, I guess. Bloom, who is an actor sometimes, has already been spotted cozying up with a “Katy Perry look-a-like,” which I think is Daily Mail’s way of saying “another white lady.”

Things are about to get messy, y’all. After 10 years of sharing custody of son Ryder, Kate Hudson and her exhusband, Black Crowes singer Chris Robinson, are in the midst of custody dispute. Remember that rude W Magazine photo shoot you did right after divorcing her? She might not still be mad about it, but we are.

disagreed over Hudson’s parenting style. Robinson, 50, has some, um, concerns. “He’s worried Kate hasn’t been as hands-on as she should be and he wants more guidance over their son,” a source tells the magazine. “It’s suddenly become a different situation.” Hudson, 37, is convinced her ex is out for her money, which, fair. We’ll see how this plays out.

Now that the bonds of Brangelina have been broken, Brad Pitt is searching for a familiar sort of comfort in the lean, tanned bosom of his ex-wife. That’s right, I’m talking about Jennifer Aniston. According to Us Weekly, the 53-year old has been texting his ex, and I can’t even. Apparently, Pitt no longer had Aniston’s digits, and went through the laborious effort of tracking them down just so he could wish her a happy birthday. They’ve been talking ever since.

Zoey Deutch: Ambition is a wonderful thing The “Before I Fall star is very serious about being an actress. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge matt.prigge@metro.us

Zoey Deutch has been on a tear. In the last year, she’s had scenestealing supporting turns in “Everybody Wants Some!!, “Why Him? and “Dirty Grandpa. “Before I Fall pushes her to the front lines. An adaptation of Lauren Oliver’s YA novel, it’s essentially a more serious “Groundhog Day, forcing Deutch’s Sam to relive the same fateful day, going from an oblivious mean girl to someone who cares about others. But Deutch — 22, and the daughter of Lea Thompson and director Howard Deutch (“Pretty in Pink) — doesn’t think you have to be a young adult to get it. Not to be glib, but speaking as a nonteenage girl, I still got a lot out of this. The thing I’m most proud of is so many people at screenings have told me that after they saw it, they immediately called their wife or their sister or daughter or someone they deeply care about, to tell them they loved them. That felt very special to me. It’s not a movie solely for teenage girls. It captures that moment when we’re young when we become less solipsistic,

develop a sense of the bigger world and gain a sense of empathy. Hopefully. I think at the beginning, Sam is someone who disastrously follows the rules of her group without any selfreflection. She thinks life will carry her along without having to live it authentically. She’s very much a follower, but by the end she becomes a real leader — not in an alpha way, but in taking responsibility for her actions. The closeness she has with her friends seemed really authentic. Did you spend a lot of time hanging out together? I had a pretty rigorous schedule due to the nature of the movie. I wasn’t really going out. And I love my job and take it seriously. I was the lame one who would go home early and was constantly in a state of trauma. And besides, this is work. It’s work, it’s a job. I think people forget that. It’s always funny when people ask, “Did you have fun? I’m like, “I don’t know if that’s the goal. I

You do seem to have gone next-level in the past couple years. I’ve been thinking a lot about the word “ambition. I love what I do and I’m ambitious. I don’t know why that word has a bad rap. It just means to work hard for what you want and love, as far as I’m

concerned. I was always raised to work hard. I always knew what my purpose was. I always knew what I wanted to do and that I had to work hard for it. And also have a sense of humor. Certain ambitious people ruin the word for the people who have healthy ambition. Have you ever looked at

the word “ambition? The reason I bring that up is that when a female uses it, it’s like a bad word. When I say the word “ambition, it has a negative connotation. Literally the word “ambition is a desire to do or achieve something requiring determination or hard work. I take that as a really positive, empowering thing.

Xbox Game Pass may be a game-changer Geek Girl in Hollywood

JENNA BUSCH

legionofleia.com

In case you need a break from the endless Oscar news and the Amazon outage, I’m here to distract you. On Tuesday, Microsoft announced a new subscription service for Xbox called Xbox Game Pass. For $9.99 a month, gamers can download over 100 Xbox games and backward-compatible titles, with discounts if you decide to keep them. It’s not exactly the same as streaming services like Netflix. You guys know that when the internet gets wonky, streaming content can be sketchy. It’s one thing to have to restart “Friends”

where you left off; it’s quite another to be just about to beat the boss and have the game crash on you. Downloading removes this otherwise fatal flaw. In discussing the service with my better half, one of the things that came up was how much more access this will give us to games. Let’s be honest: Games are freaking expensive. Now, I have friends who are game designers, so I know how much work goes into making one. It’s just that, as an average person making an average salary, there are only so many games I’m going to shell out cash for. In a way, it’s a disservice to some of the smaller, independent games. I just can’t afford to give them a chance when I don’t have extra cash lying around. In a small way, used games gave us some

freedom to pick up popular titles for a lot less. We could trade stuff in and try new things — but still, you’re likely going to go for the games that you’ve heard about, rather than try something new. With a monthly download service, you can play whatever you want. Look, I love the big titles. I do! It’s just that, if gamers en masse have a chance to check out games that maybe don’t have the same kind of advertising budget that the larger ones do, we might get more of those! Gaming can get into a rut. We’ve got first-person shooters, RPGs, racing games, etc. Most of those, despite a few standouts, feel a lot alike. I’m really hoping this service, if it does well, will give indie games a chance to shine and developers will see that people want them.

WHERE TO EAT, DRINK & PLAY RACHEL RACZKA @rachelraczka rachel.raczka@metro.us

Tony-winning play “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the NightTimeâ€? isn’t your typical coming-of-age story. That’s because its lead, 15-year-old Christopher, isn’t your typical teenage boy. A highly intelligent, self-declared sleuth seeking justice for his neighbor’s slain pooch, Christopher’s journey to self-discovery is as heartbreaking as it is thought-provoking. We chat with Adam Langdon, a 24-year-old Brooklyn-based Juilliard grad, who plays Christopher on the U.S. tour. He explains Christopher’s unique perspective, and why his character has chosen to channel Sherlock Holmes. While it’s never formerly addressed in the book or the production, the story and Christopher have been long associated with autism and Asperger’s (a characterization book author Mark Haddon has been hesitant to fully conďŹ rm). How did you make sure you were approaching Christopher with sensitivity and

understanding, regardless of where he is on the spectrum? In the book, there’s no diagnosis ever made, so we stayed away from it as well. We look at him as an awesome young man who is growing up like everyone else — who gets annoyed with his parents and finds ways to overcome the things that other teenagers do, too. We did, however, visit a school for people on the spectrum, and it was an awesome experience. We met three young men who were so unique and different and wonderful. It gave me insight into what I’m seeing from Christopher’s point of view, so then I can run with what’s popping up on page form for me. Everyone who’s played Christopher has had a different perspective, and that’s great. This play celebrates and encourages what’s different.

When Christopher decides to take up the case of the murdered dog (RIP), he also ďŹ nds himself channeling Sherlock Holmes. Why do you think Christopher chooses him? Sherlock is an incredible person who is a little different from society. Christopher sees that, and knows he’s smarter than everyone else, just like Sherlock is smarter than everyone else. Sherlock is cool about it, so Christopher tries to play it cool, too. He likes that Sherlock is respected — from the London police to Watson to the begrudging respect of criminals — and he admires that as a hero. Without giving too much away, do you think Christopher experiences emotional growth by the end of the show? I think so. He has some powerful ideas and a greater confidence than he had before. His wants and needs [at the end of the show] aren’t unrealistic, but now, his basic mind-set is that he can overcome obstacles because of what he’s been able to accomplish in this play.

Deviled rabbit at Whetstone Tavern

Jennifer Logue eats her way through Philly. jennifer.logue@metro.us

Don’t get me wrong — I love brunch. But sometimes I like to hold off for an early dinner. With the gorgeous weekends we’ve been having, a hearty evening meal basking in the sunshine at Whetstone Tavern was in order. This Queen Village gem celebrates its second anniversary in July and has already become a local favorite. Its inventive spin on American cuisine has something for everyone and won’t break the bank. Chef Eric Leveille recently added a few

new items to the dinner menu, which included the deviled rabbit. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover or a dish by its name, but my curiosity got the best of me and I ordered it. I had no idea what to expect, but our server insisted that this dish in particular was his favorite. I was a bit nervous about my decision at

first. Would it basically be hard-boiled deviled eggs with bits of rabbit in them? Or would it be something more substantial? I figured if I didn’t like it, I could always take a bit of my friend’s pasta. (But who wants to be that friend?) Let’s just say the deviled rabbit completely took my breath away, so there was no need to dive into the food of

my dining companion. It looked like a Miroinspired work of art! An egg cooked sunny-side up was practically winking at me in a gooey pool of pecorino-infused polenta with juicy pieces of rabbit. Adding a pop of color, crispness and spice was a handful of fresh arugula and to the side, two generous portions of charred balsamic bread. A gorgeous orange swirl of deviled aioli complemented by a luscious black swirl of balsamic topped it all off. Overall, this dish was creamy, warm and flavorful without being spicy. There are also many different ways you can eat it. I began with a spoon but soon switched to the charred balsamic bread for dipping and mixing everything together. Sometimes it’s perfectly acceptable to play with your food.

A low and slow tour of the US Explore the regional styles of barbecue and where to eat them.

Texas Its sheer size means Texas contains four distinct regional variations of barbecue. Slow and low brisket is the ticket in Central Texas, and despite the popularity of sauces, Texas brisket speaks for itself. Oak coals smoke their flavor right into the tender meat, which is seasoned very sparingly. In addition to brisket, homemade sausage and beef short ribs are often on the menu. Where to get it: The line at Franklin BBQ in Austin forms hours before the place opens. Trust that the brisket and banana cream pie are worth it.

Kansas City Barbecue in Kansas City has been going strong since the early 1900s when a man named Henry Perry served his dry rub from the depths of his inner city pit. Local pit masters will dry rub everything in sight, but sauces are served generously and offered in a range of varieties; most include tomato and molasses for a tangy sweet flavor and thick texture. Where to get it: Gates Bar-B-Q may have a long line but it moves fast, as everyone is eager for their signature sauce and the burnt ends from Gates’ hickory wood fire. BB’S Lawnside Barbecue serves up the good stuff with a live blues band.

Tennessee Pork ribs, pulled pork and pork butt are cooked very slowly over a lowtemp hickory wood fire, resulting in a meat so tender it falls off the bone. It’s seasoned with either a wet or dry paprika-based rub before the smoking begins. The sauce is vinegar- and tomato-based and tends to be on the thinner side.

Where to get it: Not only loved by locals, Memphis’ Central BBQ slings their sauces across state lines to satisfy their legion of hungry fans. The dry rub ribs at Charlie Vergos Rendezvous are the stuff of legend since 1948.

North Carolina You’ll find two distinct styles of ’cue here: The eastern style includes smoking the whole hog and then chopping it up, served with a pepper and vinegar sauce. On the Western side, more focus is given to the pork shoulder, and tomatoes and brown sugar are added to the vinegar sauce and

overnight using nothing but wood. In the mood for seconds? Lexington BBQ or Wilber’s will not disappoint.

South Carolina In South Carolina, whole hogs smoke for an entire day on very low heat, making pork the meat of choice. The German immigrants who settled there made their contribution to ’cue in the form of a pungent mustardbased sauce. Where to get it: Pit masters at Sweatman’s BBQ in Holly Hill spend the entire week smoking hogs and making sides for a knockout weekendonly buffet.

Sixers shutting Embiid down for rest of season The news is not surprising, but devastating nonetheless.

next steps.” Embiid has not played since Jan. 27 and the nature of his injury seemed to change several times as the medical staff pushed the goalposts further and further back on his return. He attended but did not play in the NBA rookie challenge and practiced with the team several times, making it appear like a return was imminent. Obviously it isn’t now. “Our primary objective and focus remains to protect his long-term health and ability to perform on the basketball court,” Sixers president of basketball operations Bryan Colangelo said. “As our medical team and performance staff continue their diligence in the evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of Joel’s injury, we will provide any pertinent updates when available.”

EVAN MACY @evan_macy evan.macy@metro.us

The Sixers got 31 games out of Joel Embiid and still could get a Rookie of the Year out of him as he averaged incredible numbers for limited time on the floor (just under 25 minutes per game). But that’s all they’ll get from him. After an MRI Monday and a lengthy delay, the Sixers’ medical staff and front office finally told fans that Embiid’s status has been changed from out indefinitely to out for the remainder of this season. “The assessment of Monday’s follow-up MRI of Joel Embiid’s left knee appears to reveal that

Sixers fans will now need to wait until October to see Embiid play again. GETTY IMAGES

the area affected by the bone bruise has improved significantly, while the previously identified meniscus tear appears more pronounced in this most recent scan,” Dr. Jonathan Glashow, Sixers chief

medical director said. “We will continue to work with leading specialists to gather additional information through clinical examination and sequential testing to determine the best course of action and

Howie Roseman presented a look inside his draft room to reporters Wednesday, when he addressed the media at the NFL combine in Indianapolis. “Let’s not miss on guys we have a third round grade on in the sixth round because there is a particular position that we need,” Roseman, the Eagle VP of player personnel said. “We are not going to take a position in the draft just because of need,” Roseman continued. “It has to do with having a young quarterback and building around him. What looks like a need today could change. We have to get the best player available.” The Eagles have Carson Wentz and he’s the priority. That was made clear. And with the worst wide receiving core in football last season, Philly seems to be intent on targeting

weapons to help Wentz. But Roseman stresses that even though they are in need, they won’t make a stupid stretch. “We are trying to build a complimentary roster that fits around our quarterback and what he’s comfortable with and our coaching staff,” Roseman said. The Eagles have seven picks this April, including the 14th or 15th overall (pending a coin toss with the Colts later this week). EVAN MACY

Birds interested in Charles? Word of Jamaal Charles’ release from the Chiefs had many NFL teams digging into his recent injury history and contemplating whether the 30-year-old running back, the most productive in Kansas City history would be a good pick up when free agency begins on March 9. At the NFL combine, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson was asked about whether he thinks the downhill runner would be a fit in Philly. “I’ve got history with him in Kansas City for three years and he’s a tremendous running back and we will evaluate him now,” the coach said, “to see how he can fit into our offense.” The Eagles are in a good position, if needed, to cut ties with Ryan Mathews, who is also oft injured but pales in comparison to the potent Charles. Philly also has a slew of young running backs who would do well to learn from Charles.

Flyers engage in three interesting deadline-day deals If nothing else, deadline day was eventful for Flyers fans. EVAN MACY @evan_macy evan.macy@metro.us

The Flyers made three interesting moves Wednesday afternoon ahead of the NHL’s trade deadline, acquiring a few draft picks and a veteran forward while signing two players to contract extensions. They said goodbye to franchise leader Mark Streit while adding more confusion and questions to their goalie situation in the future. The most controver-

MEDICAL RESEARCH

sial move was a two-year, $5 million extension to backup goalie Michal Neuvirth (or is he the starter?) — adding years to the deal of a goalie with a .887 goals against average. Not exactly a stellar stat line. The goalie is 28-yearold and has been brilliant at times in net for Philly but has been woefully inconsistent. He was much better statwise in 201516, posting a .924 goals against mark and an 18-8 record (he is 10-9 this season). The move indicates that Philly could be contemplating parting ways with Steve Mason, who is due to be a free agent this

summer, just as Neuvirth was. It also signals that the team has confidence in up-and-coming goaltender Anthony Stolarz. With an expansion draft (for Las Vegas) coming this offseason, the team will likely need to protect Stolarz and make Neuvirth available. Philly also inked Pierre-Edouard Bellemare to a two-year pact Wednesday. The 32-yearold forward has recorded three goals and three assists through 62 games this season but has proven to be an extremely potent defensive forward and third or fourth-line staple. His deal is reportedly

Mark Streit’s days as a Flyer will always be remembered fondly.

worth $2.9 million over two seasons. The Flyers also pulled the trigger on sending Streit, the team’s elder statesman and locker room leader, to Tampa before he was quickly flipped to Pittsburgh. In return, Philadelphia GM Ron Hextall was able get a decent return, with veteran forward Valtteri Filppula heading north along with a fourthround and conditional seventh-round selection in the 2017 NHL Draft.

GETTY IMAGES

Filppula has one year remaining and $5 million on an expiring contract. He was sent to Philly to open a little cap space for the team next season and also provides Philly some help offensively — as he has scored 34 points, with 27 assists with the Lightning. The move also conceivably paves the way for a young defenseman to work his way onto the Flyers’ roster if the team falls out of playoff contention.

Aries Size up your situation and then make a move. Don’t give anyone a chance to dictate how you should live your life or do your job. If you try hard, you will gain respect.

Libra Pressure will lead to stress if you let it. Deal with emotional mayhem before it explodes in order to reverse any troubles that are brewing.

Taurus An emotional conversation will impart greater meaning to the way you want to do things in the future. Honesty will promote decisions based on trust and loyalty.

Scorpio Share your feelings. Doing so will be a relief and will help you recognize how your ideas are being perceived and what degree of help will be offered.

Gemini Consider the consequences if you speak up about something you know little about. Gather all the facts before you misrepresent someone who needs your help.

Sagittarius Socialize and mix business with pleasure. An honest and open approach will ensure that you are not misinterpreted. Leave no room for error.

Cancer You will find emotional comfort and peace through engaging in meditation and trying something altogether different. Broaden your scope.

Capricorn Be satisfied with what you have. Too much of anything will lead to added stress and an inability to follow your dreams. Moderation will help build greater security.

Leo A couple of physical changes will boost your spirits. Refuse to let a jealous individual who feels threatened by you discourage your plan to succeed.

Aquarius An emotional incident must not be allowed to interfere with a chance to move forward now. Make whatever changes are necessary to bypass trouble.

Virgo A short trip will be informative. You are best off seeing something firsthand if you want to get involved. Gains will be made if you get the inside scoop.

Pisces It’s a good day to talk with people who share your experience. Think carefully about what might need to be changed in order for you to meet your goals. EUGENIA LAST
