Study: Sweetener could be used as a pesticide Bad diet. A Drexel biologist’s son discovers that artificial sweeteners kills flies. For his sixth-grade science project at Masterman School, then 11-year-old Simon Kaschock-Marenda wondered if his parents’ dietary decisions could also affect flies.

And then his project turned into an academic study. The goal three years ago was to find out how different sweeteners affected the health of fruit flies after his parents, one of whom is Drexel University biologist Daniel Marenda, started to use artificial sweeteners instead of sugar. He chose fruit flies because his father studied them at work. For the project, Daniel and his son fed the flies various sweeteners, and all

of them died within days. Daniel Marenda asked his colleague Sean O’Donnell what he thought of the discovery. “I immediately got super excited because I saw the potential for possibly developing this as an insecticide,” O’Donnell said. The result is a study, conducted by Drexel professors, biologists and graduate students and published in the journal PLOS One. It found that Truvia was the deadliest sweeten-

er. Flies that ate the sweetener, which contains the compound erythritol, died in a few days, while other sweeteners killed the flies within weeks. Unfortunately, Daniel, now 14, didn’t win a top prize. “But we bought him a new laptop,” Marenda, his father, said. TOMMY ROWAN @tommyrowan

Speeding fraud

Man in ‘drag-race’ crash sentenced for fraud Khusen Akhmedov, 23, facing murder charges for allegedly killing Samara Banks and her four sons in a late-night crash on Roosevelt Boulevard last summer, was sentenced Thursday to 27 months for Medicare fraud.

Khusen Akhmedov / PPD

Akhmedov allegedly defrauded Medicare as an ambulance driver with Penn Choice Ambulance Inc., which overbilled Medicare, federal prosecutors said. Akhmedov’s former codefendant Ahmen Holloman had charges dropped after evidence showed they were not drag-racing but just driving on the same street by chance. METRO

Blake Bills, who along with girlfriend Shayna Sykes stole a police car and led cops on a chase through two states last year, pleaded guilty on Thursday to carjacking and eluding police, reports say. The 25-year-old of Macungie, Pennsylvania, now faces up to 17 years in prison for the carjacking, officials said. Reports say he may serve an eight-year concurrent sentence for eluding police. Bills admitted he stole the car and ran over a police officer, who is still recovering from injuries. BIlls’ sentencing is set for July 3. Sykes has not yet gone to trial. METRO

The official parade begins at 13th and Locust streets in the Gayborhood at noon, then heads west to Seventh Street, up to Market and over to Penn’s Landing, where the festival will begin at about 1:30 p.m. with The Village People headlining. Entrance this year costs $15. METRO

Moo. Animal rights group criticizes Philly farm enforcement Is Philadelphia the secondworst city in the nation for humane law enforcement of meat-packers? Farm Sanctuary, an animal rights activism group, sent a letter Thursday criticizing the enforcement practices of the Philadelphia regional office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The letter claims that the FSIS issues “noncompliance reports” (NR) for incidents that should have merited a suspension, a $1,000 fine and punishment of up to one year in jail. In one instance at a Souderton meat packing plant, an FSIS observed an employee unsuccessfully use a “captive bolt stunner” three times on a dairy cow before rendering it unconscious. The plant got an NR. “This NR documents

Tonino Irace, 69, of Glenolden, Canio Pascale, 66, of Philadelphia, and Zoheir Mouloudj, 44, also of Philadelphia, were all charged with illegal liquor sales. Irace and Pascale were additionally charged with criminal conspiracy. Citywide Vice raided Caffe Italia and Mediterranean’s of South Philly and confiscated cash and liquor from both. They took $584 from Italia and more than $17,000 from Mediterranean’s. Citywide also confiscated 129 bottles of beer and liquor from Italia and 181 from Mediterranean’s. METRO

This week, at the age of 93, the World War II veteran from Ohio is jumping into Normandy again to mark the anniversary of the June 6, 1944, sea-borne landings by Allied troops, although this time he will not be making the leap alone. “They are making me do a tandem,” Martin said in a telephone interview. “They are worried about me getting hurt. I said, ‘Don’t worry about it. If I get hurt or I get killed, what is the difference? I’ve lived 93 years. I’ve had a good life.’” Martin said he was

jumping now because he may be the last man from his unit of the 101st Airborne Division to ever do it again. Martin, who lives near Dayton, said he will use a round canopy parachute like those in World War Two, which drop more quickly than modern parachutes. He is also taking one of his jump jackets from the war to France to display. A U.S. Veterans Affairs doctor cleared him to make the jump physically and pronounced him mentally fit, he said. “You might ask some of my friends around here if they believe in that,” Martin quipped. “Some of them think that I’m crazy.” REUTERS

WELLBEING

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is a great way to get a tick. / IMAGE SOURCE

Yuck. Ticks are out and about this season. Learn how to stay safe. You don’t have to traipse through deep-wooded areas to pick up a tick this summer. One can latch onto you in any city park. “[They lurk] anywhere there’s grassy vegetation, but especially where the grass is taller,” says Dr. Roberto Posada, an infectious disease specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. The good news is that most tick bites don’t make us sick, but they can cause Lyme disease and Rocky

Mountain spotted fever. The first thing to do if you suspect a bite is to wash the area well with soap and water to minimize the risk of bacterial infection. Removing them should be done carefully with tweezers. “They attach by a nozzle, which buries into the skin,” says Posada. “Make sure you grab the nozzle and pull straight out — don’t pull side to side. You want to get all of the tick out.”

Advice

Keep covered Tick bite infections are treated with antibiotics. Still, prevention is better, says Posada: “No one wants to wear long sleeves and pants in summer, but clothing forms a barrier. Also, take a shower right after you’ve been hiking and do a body search.”

Tom Cruise tries to get his groove back in the sci-fi action film “Edge of Tomorrow,” in which he relives the same day fighting aliens. / WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT

Regular(-ish) guy

‘Jerry Maguire’ (1996) One of his bigger hits, “Jerry Maguire” begins where most early Cruise films end: with the brat tamed and apologetic. But Cruise is endearing as a newly ethical sports agent flailing about — relatable and engagingly human, yet still Tom Cruise. (The guy’s still managing athletes and picking which hottie to bang, after all.)

In defense of Tom. The actor has had it rough since his 2005 Oprah incident. That’s unfortunate in more ways than one. Last month in L.A. Weekly, Amy Nicholson made a bold yet hard-to-refute claim: The Internet had unfairly killed our biggest movie star. Tom Cruise’s couch-jumping incident from Oprah had been overblown, and we were not judging him for what matters: the quality of his work. He’s a versatile performer, all the way up to the new, excellent “Edge of Tomorrow.” Here are some of his best roles. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

‘The Color of Money’ (1987)

‘Rain Man’ (1988)

‘Magnolia’ (1999)

In Cruise’s breakthrough film, he stars as an MBA-bound kid who befriends a prostitute (Rebecca De Mornay). It had more depth than the typical ’80s teen sex comedy.

Much of Cruise’s early work has him play an overconfident upstart who has to be tamed, usually by an older mentor. But this one put him with Paul Newman and Martin Scorsese.

Cruise has a confidence and focus that can be scary. Taken to a logical extreme, he can play a real a—hole. And so he was in his first real drama, one of his trickiest performances.

“Rain Man” isn’t the extreme of Cruise’s jerkitude. That would be his electrifying, Oscar-nominated turn as misogynistic self-help guru T.J. Mackey in P.T. Anderson’s epic.

‘Born on the Fourth of July’ (1989)

‘Mission: Impossible’ (1996)

When Oliver Stone cast the star of “Cocktail” to play Vietnam War veteran and activist Ron Kovic, the world scoffed. They were wrong.

It’s weird to think that it took until his mid 30s for Cruise to do a proper action film — a genre that has dominated his recent career.

Self-aware

‘Eyes Wide Shut’ (1999)

‘Vanilla Sky’ (2001)

In Stanley Kubrick’s marital drama, the actor has never been funnier as he wanders about New York trying to play it cool and very badly fumbling at getting some tail.

Cruise likes to do films that question what makes a movie star. Here, he’s gruesomely disfigured. Robbed of his looks, he reveals an ugly, desperate, pathetic monster.

I love you to death Disease romance. Two kids with cancer flirt and wrestle with dying in “The Fault in Our Stars.” “The Fault in Our Stars” is not your typical disease movie. It’s one that thinks it’s above disease movies. “Love Story,” “Sweet November” and films of that ilk are an obvious influence on this (as well as on “50/50”) despite painstaking efforts to assure viewers that they’re definitely not one of those kinds of movies. They promise tough talk and an aversion to sentiment, erecting strict rules they will break around the halfway mark. Based on John Green’s best-selling YA novel, “The

Fault in Our Stars” tells of Hazel (Shailene Woodley), a longtime cancer sufferer whose steeliness threatens to break when she catches the smirking stares of Augustus (Ansel Elgort), a charming goofball who has lost part of a leg to his disease. For the most part, “The Fault in Our Stars” remains tough till the end, even after it surrenders to a mess of musical montages set to M83 and a variety of sensitive acoustic guitar-andpiano ballads. (That Hazel briefly sports a Pink Floyd shirt is a cruel tease.) It never wavers in its death talk; it just softens a little. “Pain demands to be felt,” reads a line in Hazel’s favorite book, and to its credit, the film never forgets that. It’s still a rocky road. A trip to Amsterdam, for example, offers a tragically

ill-advised visit to the Anne Frank House, where we’re invited to make questionable connections between a young girl dying of cancer and a girl who died young because she was sent to a concentration camp. The film does mostly recover itself, thanks in large part to its actors. Laura Dern seems to be on hand simply to lend gravitas as Hazel’s mom until she’s finally, late in, given a meaty scene. It’s sappy, but it still goes closer to the brink than most films like it.

“Edge of Tomorrow” is very clever, but it’s not original. In fact, it’s a bald rip-off of a film that’s both: “Groundhog Day.” It’s just that it’s “Groundhog Day” with belligerent, tentacled aliens who are laying siege to the planet. And instead of simply waking up every morning in restart mode, its would-be hero — Tom Cruise’s Major Cage, a smirking army propagandist very unwittingly turned freaked-out soldier — is usually melted, run over, crushed, torn apart, feasted upon or shot in the head, execution-style. The explanation for Cage’s rebooting is less elegant than it was in “Groundhog Day,” where the reason was that there was no reason. The one here, delayed for exactly long enough, is silly and convoluted, but once you accept it, getting into the groove is both easy and delightful. This is essentially a video game,

and an old-school one: the kind where players only have to remember moves and beats. But it knows simply having Cruise’s warrior do the same thing until he gets it right would grow quickly tiresome. So it keeps reinventing itself, upping the score. The thrill of watching “Edge of Tomorrow” isn’t just about what’s onscreen. It’s also about the tension of worrying how

long this studio product can sustain its creativity before the execs come in and ruin the fun. It gets about 2/3 of the way there. It also knows, like “Eyes Wide Shut” before it, that it’s always a joy to make the cocksure Cruise nervous. Up until its last 20 minutes or so, it’s the biggest blast an outsized summer film has been in both recent and not-sorecent memory. MATT PRIGGE

Bieber’s adolescent racist streak emerges again Justin Bieber’s past keeps coming back to haunt him, as yet another video has surfaced showing the then-14-year-old singer parodying his “One Less Lonely Girl” hit by using a racist slur instead, accord-

ing to the Sun. Sources say his team has known about the video for years but refused to pay the $500,000 demanded by whoever ended up leaking it. As is becoming his custom, Bieber was quick to apologize, the second time he’s done so for a racist video from his past in less than a week. “Facing my mistakes from years ago has been one of the hardest things

I’ve ever dealt with,” he says in the new statement. “But I feel now that I need to take responsibility for those mistakes and not let them linger. … At the end of the day, I just need to step up and own what I did.” He might want to save some of that owning, though, as Page Six reports that there could be “15 to 20 more minutes” of footage of Bieber using racial slurs that have yet to be released, footage that “explicitly shows this was more than just one regrettable joke,” a source says. Wonder what the next apology will look like.

Dr. Dre, get your money right If Dr. Dre is looking to downplay reports that he’s basically a billionaire now, his latest real estate purchase isn’t helping. The rap mogul has reportedly closed on a $40 million mega-mansion in Brentwood, California, according to E! News. Forbes recently listed Dre as the wealthiest hip-hop artist of 2014, with a net worth of $550 million, but a sale of his Beats by Dr. Dre business that’s rumored to be in the works could push him past the billion mark.

“The Talkback,â€? which will be rechristened “The Postshowâ€? in Edinburgh, seems an ideal ďŹ t for the fest. The show lampoons the tradition of postshow Q&As, beginning with the end of a pretentious theater piece and then engaging the crowd in a part-scripted, part-improvised back and forth. “This piece is a deconstruction of theater,â€? says Wrenn, “so it’s very apropos because a lot of the 2,000-plus shows at the festival are sincerely doing the thing that we’re satirizing.â€?

Fringe. Local troupe deconstruct a show about deconstructing theater. By the time “The Talkback enjoyed a successful run at last year’s Philadelphia Fringe Festival, the show, by The Berserker Residents, had already been

through a year-and-a-half of development. Now “The Talkback is headed for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and the Berserker Residents are tinkering with it again. Over the next three weeks, the company will present the show three times as part of FringeArts’ Production Residencies program. “We kind of want to take the wheels off the show — take it apart and look at all the parts of it,

then put it back together again and get it into lean, mean fighting shape for when we go to Edinburgh, says co-founder Bradley K. Wrenn. “Each Sunday we may do the show entirely differently, maybe try something really dangerous and weird with the show just to see if we can make it grow and change. SHAUN BRADY @MetroPhilly letters@metro.us

Whether you’re hosting a huge viewing party or just flipping channels so that you can stay topical at the water cooler on Monday, what follows is all you need to know about the 68th Tony Awards, which will air at 8 p.m. on CBS. Host: Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Neil Patrick Harris is not going to be wooing you with his remarkable talent, rapier wit and classic good looks this year. Instead, we’re stuck with Hugh Jackman’s remarkable talent, rapier wit and classic good looks. Oh, wait — that’s not bad news at all! Carry on.

the decision will make a huge impact on Broadway, determining whether we can expect to see more new musicals or another slew of remakes and jukebox hits in coming years.

4

Lead Actress, Play: Although “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill” offers the songs of Billie Holiday, it’s designated as a play. This means star Audra McDonald will have a shot at winning in all four acting categories, making her one of only five thespians who have done so. As her sixth Tony Award, this would also posit her as the record-holding female for the most Tony Awards of all time (surpassing Angela Lansbury and Julie Harris).

POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT FOR CNN

THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH FOR MODERN PRESIDENTS

Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.

Like chickens on a hot plate: That’s how the Obama administration was dancing all week as it sought to explain the deal to bring Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl home after being held captive by the Taliban for “nearly” five years. White Housers and their pals defended the trade, spoke passionately about the need to rescue Bergdahl, and vigorously dismissed any claim that the president broke the law by failing to inform Congress as … well, as required by law. But most of all, they were building ever higher, ever stronger ramparts around a principle: A sitting president ought to be able to do what he wishes to do. Every president wants this, of course. After all, what good is the most powerful office on the

planet if you can’t use it? The idea of having to bow to Congress, the courts and the voters is well and good on paper, but all that takes time, and it’s messy, and of those groups may tell you “No, we don’t want what you’re selling.” Presidents don’t like being told that. So in recent years, through George W. Bush and now Barack Obama, we’ve heard more and more talk of “executive orders” as a primary means of pushing policy and getting around political gridlock. It is hardly unprecedented, nor is it historic. The Roosevelts, Teddy and Franklin, bookend the Golden Age of Executive Orders, roughly 1901 to 1945. With the help of the in-between presidents (Taft, Wilson, Harding, Coolidge and Hoover) they unleashed the single lon-

SPORTS Eagles in shape

Eagles compete in OTAs healthy and conditioned The Eagles were extremely healthy last season. In fact, take away the 16 games missed by Jeremy Maclin last year, and Eagles’ starters, according to the Dallas Morning News, missed just 13 games last year — far and

away the least in the NFL. The Jets missed 20 games to injury, nine fewer than the Eagles’ full total of 29. This continued health could mean two things for the Birds heading into 2014. Either they are in excellent shape, having fielded 14 players for all 16 games (a feat no other team equalled last season), or they are due for some injuries.

During his Hall of Fame acceptance speech, he noted that he made the right choice, considering possible injury in football and his love of baseball. “Yeah, but he was exposed to baseball and look what happened,” Gwynn Jr. said. “We have to get these kids exposed to baseball any way we can.” ED CONDRAN @EDDIESCORES sports@metro.us

The tempo was fast last season, but with the health and endurance of the squad of returning players this season, NFL defenses better watch out — or hit the treadmill. All signs point to the fastest-moving offense yet. EVAN MACY

We’ve had a great deal of success.” There are 6,000 children participating in the Junior RBI program and 2,000 in the RBI segment in the Delaware Valley. But Gwynn Jr. believes more has to be done to expose urban youth to the joys of baseball. “We have to figure something out to drive up the numbers,” Gwynn Jr. said. “If only all kids knew how great baseball is to play. I chose it over the other sports.” So did Dee Gordon, who now starts at second base for the Dodgers. Gordon played basketball and football primarily until he picked up a glove at 17. “It took him that long to focus on baseball,” his father and former Phillies closer Tom Gordon said. “But he grew to love it and with his skill set has become a really good ballplayer. Union CEO: United States prepared to host World Cup MLS. Union CEO Nick Sakiewicz says Philadelphia could step up and host the 2022 Cup if there is a re-vote. As the country begins to shift its eyes toward the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Philadelphia Union CEO Nick Sakiewicz can’t help but wonder what it would be like to host the great competition here in Philly. At an event on Monday outlining the Union’s plans for viewing the World Cup around the city, Sakiewicz made it clear that although Qatar won the bid for the 2022 World Cup, the United States will keep fighting for the honor of being selected as the host nation. “When Qatar’s name got put up, the first thing I said was, ‘That event’s in 2022, that’s a long way away and the story isn’t written yet. This isn’t over,’ Sakiewicz said. “The U.S. is prepared at a moment’s notice to host a World Cup because we’re one of the few country’s that at a turn of a nickel can host the event. Qatar is currently under

investigation for bribing soccer officials to vote in their favor. If found guilty, UEFA president Michel Platini says there will be a re-vote. The United States hasn’t hosted a World Cup since 1994. That single event changed U.S. soccer’s popularity forever, according to Sakiewicz. “The World Cup has profound impact on the countries that host them,

The Whitecaps are led by midďŹ elder Pedro Morales who seems to always be in the right place on the oensive attack. said Sakiewicz. “United States soccer would not be where it is today if we never hosted the 1994 World Cup. The legacy that the World Cup leaves on a country is amazing. The MLS was founded in 1993 as part of the deal for the United States to host the World Cup. In its inception, the league had 10 teams, had barely any fan base and was losing millions of dollars

eeach year. The league now makes millions of n dollars each year, it is d broadcasting its games b iinternationally and by 2015, the league will 20 boast 21 teams. boa ““Back then we were considered a third-world soccer country,â€? said Sakiewicz, alluding to 1994. “We were a country that didn’t really have a big established professional league and we were a country that had low level professional and college players. ‌ The MLS is now 19 years old and is the fastest growing sports league on the planet.â€? Sakiewicz is on Philadelphia’s World Cup Board of Trustees. If the U.S. has the chance to host again, he’ll do everything in his power to bring the games to Philly. For now his focus is on the 2014 World Cup, but regardless of the outcome he doesn’t see the popularity of the sport slowing down anytime soon. “Win, lose or draw for the United States will have zero impact on the growth of this sport,â€? said Sakiewicz.

DO NOT WRITE OFF THESE ‘FORMER’ STARS TOO EARLY just nine months. It was a big mistake. Griffin was hobbled throughout a disastrous sophomore season, burning owners who were expecting an encore of his magical rookie campaign. But things are looking up for the exciting quarterback. Griffin will be 20 months removed from his surgery by the time Week 1 rolls around.

We are so quick to write players off in today’s culture. Did someone have a bad year? Let’s carve his tombstone with 140 characters. These “burn me once” and “never again” attitudes lead to big opportunities if we can pinpoint the guys primed for a comeback. This year’s fantasy football board is littered with them.

good idea. But not in the case of Arian Foster. He looked like he had plenty of juice left early last season, and should actually benefit from the back surgery that allowed him to rest for most of the last 12 months. There simply aren’t many backs who have 300-carry, 60-catch upside.
