Oval oasis: Summer of fun starts this weekend Revision. Normally vacant Eakins Oval will be transformed once again this year, starting now. A bold partnership between the Fairmount Park Conservancy and the city’s Parks and Recreation Department is kicking off this weekend with family activities reactivating this unused public space. “Where better to go than a park on the Parkway?” asked Mark Wilkin, a park concessions manager with Parks and Rec. Farm Fest is the name of the event taking place at The Oval this weekend. From an Easter egg hunt to a petting zoo and a tree-climbing workshop for kids led by experts, Farm Fest at The Oval should give families plenty to do. “Last year was wildly successful [and] we’re hoping this year will be even bigger,” said Colleen Campbell, an events coordinator with Fairmount Park Conservancy. “There’s programs for families, for young adults, for everybody.” Although The Oval is trying to get the word out through publicity, Campbell acknowledged that a lot of people who come are just curious

passersby walking on the Parkway. “We get so many people who are just passing by and are like, ‘Oh, what is this?’” Campbell said. Hundreds of people are expected to flock to the Oval each day this weekend to enjoy music, play oversized board games and get a variety of meal options from food trucks. As summer gets going, more events will be held at The Oval. “This is our second year activating the space,” Wilkin said. “This is all part of the city’s efforts to make the space more accessible to the public.” Usually just an empty parking lot, Eakins Oval is being targeted for renewal along with nearby parks including Von Colln Memorial Field, Park Towne Place and the park around the nearby red abstract Iroquois sculpture.

Reports: Donovan McNabb arrested for DUI Donovan McNabb was arrested in Arizona in January for a DUI, reports have uncovered. News gossip website TMZ is reporting the former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback was arrested in Maricopa County and hashed out a plea deal with

prosecutors. The news outlet reported that he served one day in an Arizona jail earlier this year. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office released his mug shot, but did not include any further information. Arizona radio station KTAR reported that McNabb, currently an analyst for “Fox Sports Live,” received a criminal traffic citation in January, and is set to appear in

Two masked men made off with more than $100,000 on Thursday morning after an armored car heist in Northeast Philadelphia, police said. Just before 9 a.m., the two men ambushed the proprietors of an armored car in the parking lot of the TD Bank at 6635 Frankford Ave. in Mayfair, police

spokeswoman Tanya Little said. After stealing $105,000, the two men escaped in a black and white van that was parked on the 6600 block of Tackawanna Street, Little added. There were no injuries reported. In late October, three men in Halloween masks

made off with hundreds of thousands of dollars after they robbed an armored car in the parking lot of a Wells Fargo Bank on the 8000 block of Frankford Avenue in Holmesburg. While no arrests have been made in the original case, police have not connected the two incidents. TOMMY ROWAN

A Pakistani immigrant who is the youngest person ever convicted of U.S. terror charges was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday by a federal judge after pleading guilty to taking part in a plot to kill a Swedish artist. The immigrant, Mohammad Hassan Khalid, 20, who was taken into custody three years ago for his role in the “Jihad Jane” conspiracy, will serve an additional two years in prison as a result of his crimes. Khalid begged the judge for mercy and thanked his parents for their support during a court appearance. “Mom, Dad, you will forgive me 1,000 times even though I don’t ask for it,” said Khalid, who pleaded guilty to committing related crimes when he was as young as 15 and living in his

Spending. Obama’s budget would boost US tax revenues, cut deficits President Barack Obama’s fiscal 2015 budget request would boost U.S. tax revenues by nearly $1.4 trillion over 10 years if fully enacted, slashing deficits by $1.05 trillion while funding new spending, the Congressional Budget Office said on Thursday. While there is virtually no chance that Congress will advance Obama’s plan in its entirety, the CBO’s latest analysis will feed campaign messaging by Democrats and Republicans ahead of November’s congressional elections. The analysis compares Obama’s request to a new “baseline” estimate that CBO released last week that assumes no changes to cur-

rent tax and spending laws. But Obama’s budget plan is loaded with new policy changes, including an assumption that sweeping immigration reforms are enacted, producing a net 10-year deficit reduction of $158 billion. It proposes to limit tax breaks for wealthy

Americans and businesses, imposing a new tax on millionaires, raising tobacco taxes, and restoring estate and gift taxes to their previously higher, 2009 levels. At the same time, it would boost spending by expanding tax credits for low-income Americans, canceling the “sequester” automatic spending cuts to military and domestic programs, and increasing funds for job training. Deficits in later years of the 10-year budget window would begin to rise again in both Obama’s plan and the current-law CBO estimate as more of the Baby Boom generation retires and draws federal benefits. South Korea. Rescue mission struggles to find ferry passengers Rescuers struggled with strong waves and murky waters on Thursday as they searched for hundreds of people, most of them teenagers from the same school, still missing after a South Korean ferry capsized on Wednesday. Coast guard, navy and private divers scoured the site of the accident, about 12 miles off the country’s southwestern coast. Earlier, rescue teams hammered on the hull of

the upturned, mostly submerged vessel, hoping for a response from anyone trapped inside, but they heard nothing, local media reported. The vessel, carrying 475 passengers and crew, capsized on Wednesday during a journey from the port of Incheon to the holiday island of Jeju. Coast guards recovered five bodies late Thursday, raising the death toll to 14 people. REUTERS

Three killed in Ukraine, Putin warns of abyss Separatists attacked a Ukrainian national guard base overnight and Kiev said three of them were killed, the worst bloodshed yet in a 10day pro-Russian uprising, accompanied by tough words from Vladimir Putin that overshadowed crisis talks. Ukrainian, Russian and Western diplomats held an emergency meeting in Geneva, seeking to resolve a confrontation that has seen pro-Russian fighters seize swaths of Ukraine. The Russian president, who overturned decades of post-Cold War diplomacy last month by declaring Russia had a right to intervene in neighboring countries and annexing Ukraine’s Crimea region, accused the authorities in Kiev of plunging the country into an “abyss.” REUTERS

THE NAKED GERMAN Naturists rejoice! Your German kin have scored a legislative triumph in the name of the barebottomed set. Mindful of the Germans’ famous fascination with sunbathing in the “nackt,” Munich has approved a new law saying it is OK to drop your lederhosen, and everything else, in six designated areas of the city. I see the makings of a new joke: “Frau Linkmeyer do you want to grab a schnitzel for lunch?” “Oh, you’re the wurst!” Of course, I’m 11. But I’m also American. We’ve long lagged behind Europeans in these matters. We confine our nudity to bedrooms, art galleries and an endless stream of porn sites feeding into our laptops. And yes, the pun was intended. Nonetheless, just as marijuana laws have started changing across our land, I could see American nudists hopping on board the Munich train and pressing for similar accommodation here. We already have a handful of known nude beaches. Nudist camps have been around as long as, well, camping. My point here, of course, is not about nudism. It is about how social

What is forbidden in one age may be accepted in the next, and vice-versa. Mind you, that does not necessarily make one generation better than another; just different. I suspect the measure of a generation’s greatness is actually its ability to accept change as it comes, while respecting the objections of those who are not ready to adapt. People are easily outraged by failings in public morality, whether those appear as laws that seem too prudish or too licentious. But the naked truth is, in a free society, we all have to accept that some things will not match our personal views. So my question about the Germans is not “Are they doing the right thing?” or even “Will more people eventually be going nude here?” — but rather, “I wonder where they keep their cell phones?”

The man with a face OK computer

Technophobia All joking aside, Depp admits he’s something of a Luddite when it comes to new technology — especially the handheld kind. “Things go wrong all the time, especially between me and technology. I’m not familiar with it and I’m too old-school and dumb to be able to ďŹ gure it out,â€? he says. “Anything I have to attack with my thumbs for any period of time makes me feel stupid. So I try to avoid it as much as possible — to protect my thumbs, of course.â€? Plus, there’s also the fact that by the time he’s gotten used to a piece of technology, the world may have moved on. “Think about how technology is moving so rapidly. Things become obsolete very, very quickly,â€? he says. “So let’s say Will Caster, in 15 years’ time, is going to be in some weird room in Vegas, and people are plugging quarters into him. Right? Who has a mini-disc or laser disc player? It’s over.â€? NED EHRBAR @Nedrick

Interview. Johnny Depp actually looks like himself, for once, in the sci-ďŹ thriller “Transcendence.â€?

Fans of Johnny Depp may be startled to discover that in his latest film, the techno-thriller “Transcendence,â€? the chameleon-like actor looks like ‌ Johnny Depp. “I knew right off the bat there was no need to go into pink hair, clown nose, Ronald McDonald shoes,â€? says Depp, who has made a habit of taking on roles that involve more than a little white face paint, from Tonto in “The Lone Rangerâ€? to the Mad Hatter in “Alice in Wonderland.â€? But the most makeup Depp hides behind in “Transcendenceâ€? is only there to show the physical deterioration of his character, computer genius Will Caster, after he gets radiation poisoning. “It’s always more difficult and slightly exposing to play something that’s close to the surface, something that’s close to yourself,â€? Depp says. “I always try to hide because I can’t stand the way I look. I think it’s important to change every time, and come up with something that’s interesting.â€?

Eventually Dr. Caster’s consciousness is uploaded to a massive computer, keeping him “alive but turning him into a ghost in the machine — and a face on a video screen. “I did feel a little bit like Max Headroom, Depp admits. “I guess the worst part is I liked it. I liked being in my little dark room, and [my co-stars] were on the other side. We couldn’t find each other sometimes. And apparently playing a foreboding version of artificial intelligence didn’t put Depp off the idea of that theoretical technological advancement. “Having no intelligence, I’m looking forward to gaining something, whether artificial, superficial or superduper, he quips.

Strange looks

For Tim Burton’s “Sleepy Hollow,â€? Depp wanted to give Ichabod Crane some crazy prosthetics. The studio wouldn’t let him, as having a grotesque protagonist might potentially turn o viewers. He compensated by delivering one of his gooďŹ est performances.

“Under the Skin” is an art house “Species,” with Scarlett Johannson as a seductive killer alien trolling for horny bros. That’s a glib way of putting it, but director Jonathan Glazer (“Sexy Beast,” “Birth”) wants to play with our expectations, even as he’s beating his film into a strange shape. He lifts from Kubrick, Ingmar Bergman, Jordan Belson, Claire Denis, Nicolas Roeg and more, but the end product still feels unique. Credited only as “The Girl,” Johansson’s character cruises around town in a van, stopping to ask directions of young men. Those who get in, hoping for a night with a ScarJo lookalike, wind up immersed in tar-black fluid. Some, but

not all, of these pickups are real: Johansson really did drive around Glasgow, hitting on men while disguised in a black wig and using a not-too-bad British accent. When she’s not doing these scenes, she’s mesmerizingly impenetrable. She’s not a blank, but you scan her face for any feeling when she watches two people drown in the ocean, doing nothing. “Under the Skin” sometimes feels like it should be more elusive, but the moment you try to lock it down it slips away from you, going off into weirder territory. It’s spacey and hypnotic, and it plays withits star’s popularity. Johansson is relaxed, yet creepily distant. You get the sense of a consciousness that is legitimately alien. The character, Johansson and the film are always just out of touch. MATT PRIGGE @mattprigge

There’s actually a terrific film that could be made from “Heaven Is for Real,” the best-selling book in which a cash-strapped Nebraska preacher used his son’s near-near-death experience to create a cash cow. Title be damned, it’s a story about doubt — not in the Christian faith, which goes unwavering, but about whether you believe your 4-year-old when he won’t shut up about meeting Jesus, seeing angels and hanging with dead relatives. The book is a queasy mix of bald greediness and utter sincerity. The movie is, too. Pastor dad Todd Burpo (Greg Kinnear) is relieved when his son (Connor Corum) escapes from a near-fatal case of appendicitis. He’s less sure what to do when he talks of seeing heaven, and generally spouting about things he’s had ingrained in his head since birth. The film does try to be more than kitsch — or it tries to try. The narrative is all about whether Todd should believe his son, even as so many in

his small, churchy town do not. But while it allows people to bring up criticisms, it doesn’t actually engage. Kinnear’s Todd is beset upon by all sides — by mean atheists, by mean parishioners, even, eventually, by his goodly wife (Kelly Reilly). He’s even mocked by firemen. Todd doesn’t respond — he just makes sad faces. Its debate style could be called an argument through victimization: It wants you to side with him only because everyone else is a jerk.

MUSIC

‘I wanted it to be chaotic’ Jazz Fest. Sixteen performers take over four venues in one afternoon.

Shortly after graduating from Temple University, jazz musician Ernest Stuart packed up his trombone and headed to New York City. Soon he was gigging and touring with groups that veered close to the traditional, straight-ahead style in which he was trained. But that all changed around 2008 when he was recruited by the Brooklynbased band Red Baraat, a fusion of North Indian bhangra rhythms with everything from hip-hop to

New Orleans jazz. “They changed my perspective. And I came back to Philly wondering how I was going to incorporate this into what I do — on every level, says Stuart.

These days his tastes have a global, experimental bent, with a hint of his old-school roots for good measure. And he’s finally found a place to bring those eclectic sounds together — at least, for one day. The third annual Center City Jazz Festival will pop up Saturday, featuring 16 performers at four venues all within five blocks of each other, and all organized and selected by Stuart. “I just picked stuff that I want to hear, he says, with a big laugh. “It’s not rocket science. I wanted it to be chaotic — like there’s too much going on at once to totally comprehend. I wanted people to look around at each other

and realize how many people want to hear this music. The fest’s lineup is a mix of Philly luminaries and NYC scene leaders, from decidedly straight ahead acts, like Mike Kennedy and Tim Warfield, to the experimental leanings of Steve Coleman and the trio Thumbscrew. “Over the years, I’ve learned that audiences don’t want to overthink things, says Stuart. “I used to have all these ticket options. Now it’s just one ticket for the whole thing, so everybody can move around and taste a bit of everything. BRUCE WALSH @MetroPhilly

No holds barred when it comes to citizenship Re: ‘Could this be the end of ICE holds in Philadelphia?’ April 17, 2014 Being a lifelong U.S. citizen, I know full well that America is a country based on “rule of law” and political checks and balances. Reading your article causes me to ponder a trait President Obama and Mayor Nutter have in common: When faced with a law they apparently don’t like, they’ve been known to sign an “executive order” that shapes the law to their liking! Yet while in public, both men spew rhetoric lamenting lawlessness. What would living in the U.S. be like if the citizens circumvented the

laws they don’t like? Isn’t there enough criminal non-compliance already? Politicians governing via fiat upset the political checks and balances inherent in our political system. JOHN STASNEK, VIA E-MAIL

Mayor Nutter has signed an executive order against Immigrations and Customs Enforcement detainer holds. Now comes the next step: BRING THE DEPORTEES HOME! This is their victory, too. They deserve to share that victory with their loved ones here in Philadelphia. This executive order would be a shallow victory if Mayor Nutter does not bring them home. CHARLES RAMIREZ, PHILLY

You don’t see many 1-0 games but as Ryne Sandberg noted after the Phillies blanked the Braves, his squad traded 1-0 games with the NL East leaders. Ben Revere came through with a two-out RBI single against Atlanta’s tough lefthander Alex Wood. “I knew I was going to get a breaking pitch [first] and I went with it and drove in the run,” Revere said. “Defense is huge. Rollins led the way with 30 homers, 94 RBI, 38 doubles, 20 triples with a .296 average and a .875 OPS. Can Rollins come close to approximating those numbers once more? “I’m not worried about numbers,” Rollins said. “I hope my numbers are good but the only ones that matter are the wins and losses. I want to do what I can to help us get as many wins as possible.”

He’s hitting the ball hard and he’s been clutch.” Perhaps Ryne Sandberg is the reason Rollins is rolling. “I’m playing the same way I’ve always played,” Rollins said, “no difference. I want to have the best season possible. I want to get back to the postseason. I’m hungry. When John Kruk was asked about what the Phillies need to contend for a playoff berth, the ESPN analyst said that Jimmy Rollins needs to play like a MVP again. “I really think 2013 could have been one of those seasons in which things didn’t go right for him,” Kruk said. “I really think Jimmy has something left in him. He played well defensively last season, like always. I’m curious if he can turn it around with the bat.” Rollins has 10 RBI, good for the team lead. He’s more than a quarter of the way to last season’s paltry total of 39 RBIs. “I know I can do better than last season,” Rollins said. “I can still be very productive at the plate.” It didn’t look good during spring training when Rollins and most of his teammates put up miserable numbers. “Who cares,” was Rollins’ response to a question asked about the team’s poor Grapefruit

NBA. The standings don’t reflect the progress the 76ers made during the 2013-14 season.

The 76ers opened the 201314 season with a victory over the Miami Heat. The Sixers closed the season with a win at Miami. In between, there were a whole lot of losses (63, to be exact). It was obviously a rebuilding season for the Sixers, who were clearly playing for the future. They finished 19-63 and featured enough D League players to field a starting five. The biggest news will occur in the offseason, beginning with the draft lottery. Since the Sixers had the second-worst record behind only the Milwaukee Bucks, they’ll have a 19.9 percent chance of coming up with the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft.

Even with their 26-game losing streak, the Sixers still did not finish in last place in the East. / GETTY IMAGES

marks for losing season Brett Brown

The front office

Brown came into a very difficult situation and he was fully aware of that fact. This is a head coach who was part of four NBA championships as a member of the San Antonio Spurs’ staff. The Sixers didn’t feature the likes of Tony Parker and Tim Duncan and the result was loss after loss through a challenging season, which included an NBA record-tying 26-game skid. Through it all, Brown continued to maintain a positive approach. He

was always teaching and guiding the young players. That type of energy is contagious and will help as the team starts to add quality pieces. Brown’s experience will play a major role in the years to come.

The rookies

Michael Carter-Williams was the Sixers’ first round pick last season (No. 11 overall). He struggled at times with the marathon NBA schedule but still wound up leading all rookies in scoring, assists, rebounding, steals and minutes per game. Turnovers and poor shooting were problems at various times, but MCW proved he’s capable of competing at a very high level in this league. When he’s surrounded with better talent, expect all of his numbers to improve. The Veterans

Since the Sixers rolled out the youngest team in NBA history by the end of the season, the only real veteran on this team was forward Thaddeus Young. With Hawes and Turner traded, Young had to assume an even larger leadership role than he expected. Plain and simple, Young was phenomenal while playing under very difficult circumstances. He averaged a career high in points and 3-pointers made, but it was more of a necessity since the team was so young. Young, the longesttenured player on the Sixers, could be traded in the offseason.

THADDEUS YOUNG GETTY IMAGES

If he is, one of the classiest players in franchise history will be performing somewhere else. If not, Young will at least have more talent surrounding him next season. The Sixers have two first round selections along with the addition of Noel.

Hinkie clearly has a vision for the Sixers, and the next step will come in the draft lottery. It has to be tough to show patience when you’re selling a product to the fans.
