PhilaU team designs space suits for NASA Rocket science. A group of three collaborated with NASA on a new space suit design. Three 20-something women from Philadelphia University seemed to take a page from Betsy Ross’ book as they designed the look of the new NASA space suit, Z-2. ILC Dover, a Delawarebased engineering firm that works with NASA, was tapped to redesign the inner workings of astronaut suits. And it turned to PhilaU for help. “[ILC] is doing everything for the suit,” said Muthu “Govin” Govindaraj, engineering professor at PhilaU. “And [the company] wanted to add the aesthetic sense to it to make it more pleasing. … You need something that looks good.” To design the new duds, ILC officials chose three victors from several contending teams: Cassandra Burr, 21, a senior majoring in fashion design from Burlington, N.J.; Julia Mayer, 23, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering from Quakertown; and Gabriela Canosa, 22, a senior majoring in fashion design from Lancaster. “It was really different talking to [NASA designers], because they think totally different from us,”

Having an identity Govindaraj said the space program needs to set itself apart, because there will be competition from space tourists. “And space tourists want to be a little more than an astronaut who is going there to do experiments,” he said.

Even branding may become relevant in the future. “At some point in the future, NASA will not be the only space organization,” Govindaraj explained. “There needs to be some identity.” Govindaraj added that the old ways are simply outdated. “Before,” he said, “a flag was sufficient.”

“[This was] a once-in-a-lifetime thing to kind of branch off of what we normally do in the studio, so it was definitely fun for us to break away from designing dresses and sweaters and pants.” Canosa

Burr said. “They’re more technology, and we’re more about the customer and how we speak to the customer, and so it was different translating our goals into their goals.” But in the end, the

Kensington. Slumlord’s former properties are heading to auction In just over two weeks, would-be real estate moguls will get a shot at 86 Kensington properties going up on the auction block — half of which will be sold regardless of price. Madison Hawk Auctioneers is conducting the sale of properties formerly belonging to infamous slumlord Bob Coyle, who is serving prison time for mortgage fraud, and now owned by Kenpor L.P., at 10:30 a.m. on May 1 at First District Plaza, located at 3801 Market St. But concerns persist among local elected officials that the homes won’t get the renovations they badly need and may even be auctioned off to new slumlords who could

are brought back up to code,” said City Councilwoman Maria QuinonesSanchez in a statement after Kenpor announced the auction plan in February. Last week, a letter sent to Kenpor from QuinonesSanchez’s office expressed concerns about the auction process — for example, that in an auction format, financial institutions interested in acquiring properties purely as an investment may be able to overpower smaller local developers. The letter also asked that bidders receive due diligence packets about city code and an explanation of requirements regarding the upkeep of the properties. According to Madison Hawk’s website, all bidders will be required to put up at least $6,500 to commit to renovations and must buy a due diligence packet of legal documents.

IT’S GOOD TO BE COLORBLIND IN PHILADELPHIA Last month, I spent several days caring for both a white child and a black child. I’m white, and so is my 7-year-old son. I’m also a licensed foster mother, and we took care of a black preschooler for a few days. We all went to Wal-Mart, the library and a basketball game at the local YMCA. Each time we left the house, I wondered about what people’s reactions would be. I was happily surprised there was NO reaction. My experience made me grateful to be raising a family in the Philadelphia area, which has evolved so much in terms of race and acceptance in the last 30 years. When I was growing up in Tacony in the ‘70s, the only black people we saw were on the El when

we went to Center City. There were only white people in my neighborhood and schools. Now, when I drive through the Northeast, I see faces of every color. It makes me glad, but I know many people in the area have the opposite reaction. “It’s not like it used to be,” they say. Perhaps all this talk about race makes me sound hopelessly naive, considering I am a white, middle-class woman. And trust me, I am VERY white. I recently took a BuzzFeed quiz called “How Stereotypically White Are You?” The questions included whether I have ever “eaten soup from a bread bowl,” “recommended an NPR podcast” and “had an argument over a boy band.” I answered “yes” to all of

My son goes to grade school with kids of every color; one of his best friends is biracial. Our neighborhood has many mixed-race families. It makes my heart glad to know that the next time I take in a foster child of color, we can walk together down the street in my old neighborhood of Tacony and not attract stares. Hot air. UN: Actions must come fast to curb global warming A United Nations report said on Sunday that governments must act faster to keep global warming in check and delays until 2030 could force them to use littletested technologies to extract greenhouse gases from the air. The study, drawing on work by more than 1,000 experts, said a radical shift from fossil fuels to low-carbon energy such as wind, solar or nuclear power would shave only about 0.06 of a percentage point per year off world economic growth. “It does not cost the world to save the planet,” Ottmar Edenhofer, a German scientist who is co-chair of a meeting of the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, told a news conference in Berlin. Ukraine gives rebels deadline to disarm Crisis. Relations between Russia and the West are at their worst since the Cold War. Ukraine has given pro-Russian separatists a deadline of this morning to disarm or face a “full-scale antiterrorist operation” by its armed forces, raising the risk of a military confrontation with Moscow. Angered by the death of a state security officer and the wounding of two comrades near the flashpoint eastern city of Slaviansk, acting President Oleksander Turchinov gave rebels occupying state buildings until 6 a.m. to lay down their weapons. “The National Security and Defense Council has decided to launch a full-scale

anti-terrorist operation involving the armed forces of Ukraine,” Turchinov said in an address to the nation. He blamed Russia, which annexed Ukraine’s Crimea region when Moscow-backed former President Viktor Yanukovich fled after months of

pro-Western protests, for being behind the rash of rebellions across Russianspeaking towns in eastern Ukraine. Russia’s foreign ministry called the planned military operation a “criminal order” and said the West should bring its allies in Ukraine’s government under control. “It is now the West’s responsibility to prevent civil war in Ukraine,” the ministry said in a statement. It said it would put an urgent discussion of the “extremely dangerous” situation in eastern Ukraine on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council. Earlier, the American ambassador to the U.N., Samantha Power, said on ABC’s “This Week” program that the latest events in Ukraine bore “the telltale signs of Moscow’s involvement.” REUTERS

There’s a lot of great music at Coachella. But part of the fun is seeing stars trade in their red carpet outfits for more bohemian looks at the three-day festival. Last weekend, celebrities popped up all over the desert, rocking out to sets — and sometimes hopping onstage to lend their talent. Coachella kicked off Friday night with hip-hop duo Outkast, reunited for the first time in eight years. “It’s good to be back,” Big Boi told the audience. The reunion was cut short, however, when a tech guy reportedly killed their microphones

about 1 a.m. — meaning they were unable to bring out Killer Mike for their finale of “The Whole World.” The audience was not pleased. On Saturday night, new mom Gwen Stefani — who just gave birth last month — popped up onstage to join headliner Pharrell Williams for “Hollaback Girl.” Stefani wasn’t the only bold-faced name to make a guest appearance — Nelly came on for “Hot In Herre,” Busta Rhymes for “Pass the Courvoisier Part II,” Snoop Dogg for “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and DJ Diplo for “Aerosol Can.”

As a pioneer in the world of African-American dance, Philadanco founder Joan Myers Brown feels a deep sense of responsibility to the history in which she’s played such an important part. “I’m also interested in the history of black dance that gets lost,” Brown says. “History skips over important black choreographers, so there has to be somewhere where their work is maintained. I’m 82, so after me who’s going to be responsible for this kind of archiving

of black work?” Brown continues to add to the documenting of that history, even for herself. In building a program around Ulysses Dove’s little-revived 1984 work “Bad Blood,” she had to dig deep to find information about the late choreographer. Philadanco brought in a dance historian and contacted New York’s Dance Notation Bureau in order to re-create the piece, most associated with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. “It was a mind-bog-

gling experience for me to find out all I didn’t know about him,” Brown says about Dove. “He was quite a unique person and most of his work was done in Europe, which happens with a lot of black artists.” Brown titled Philadanco’s new show, “Blood, Sweat, and Dance,” after the intense physicality of the Dove ballet. It’s not the only piece on the bill that will cause the dancers to perspire, however; it will be followed by “Bamm,” an energetic piece cre-

What else should we look forward to? It’s a roller coaster. I think the audience is really going to like it. Obviously introducing three new people is not an easy task, with you now. There are times I definitely feel blonde-impaired. ‌ In Orange County, previously we were only represented by the bubbly blonde beach girls. And now we’re being represented by a different group. AN ‘ALICE’ TO TRAUMATIZE KIDS ‘Alice’ First Run Features $24.95

Like snowflakes, no two films of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and “Through the LookingGlass adaptations are the same. Each one picks what segments it thinks work best, then chucks the rest. Even among these, the 1988 stab by Czech stop motion animation legend Jan Svankmajer is unusual. It lacks the warmth and glee of most other adaptations. But it heightens the weird and the menacing several times over.

Here, Alice (Kristyna Kohoutova) is a dour girl who lives not in an idyllic countryside but in the depressing confines of a vaguely Communist-era Eastern European locale. The rabbit is a hideous stuffed beast who escapes through a drawer. Alice follows him, finding herself in a series of drab rooms, where she meets gnarly puppets, living animal skeletons and other things that will traumatize young children. The episodes — including a caterpillar who’s a sock with eyes and dentures — are absurdist but frightening and uneasy.

R U A TEXT ADDICT? I can’t go an hour or so without checking my phone for texts and emails. It’s the ďŹ rst thing I do in the morning. Am I an addict?

Generally speaking, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders defines addiction as a loss of control marked by reduced involvement in other activities, failed attempts to cut back, tolerance and withdrawal. It defines abuse as a pattern of maladaptive behaviors, resulting in “significant negative physical, social, interpersonal or legal consequences. If one were to apply such criteria to smartphone and email use, you and I and the vast majority of Americans would be working through the 12-step program. Consider the following statistics: As of January, an estimated 90 percent of Americans had cellphones, smartphones, e-readers or tablets. Of the ones

Updating your status from the bathroom? Admit it: You’ve been there. / LIGHTWAVEMEDIA

who own cellphones, 67 percent found themselves checking their devices for messages, alerts or calls even when they hadn’t noticed their phone ringing

or vibrating; 44 percent said they slept with their phone next to their bed to make sure they didn’t miss anything during the night; and 29 percent

described their phone as “something they can’t imagine living without. What’s behind our obsession? Instant gratification and intermittent reinforcement — there’s no greater incentive to keep sticking our hands in the cookie jar if we pull an Oreo out once every three tries. Mix in our dependence on mobile devices for communication with spouses, friends, children and work, and you’ve got one powerful prescription for a societal epidemic. A quick scan of articles on this subject paints a rather insidious picture of our most prevalent bad habit: a rise in textingrelated traffic accidents and fatalities, psychologists weighing in on the impact of distracted parents on child development, Fortune 500 CEOs rendered powerlessness by their inability turn off their cellphones. Now that we’ve established you’re not alone,

here are things you (and others) might consider:

1

Becoming aware. Take inventory of how many hours you spend daily texting or checking your emails. There are apps that can monitor incoming messages. You can also time yourself and record the results in a notebook.

2

Setting aside speciďŹ c times during the day to check and return emails and texts. Alternatively, you might consider limiting yourself to checking your emails only a certain number of times per day.

3text-free days. Let your Declare email and

friends and colleagues know that every Saturday, you do not check emails or text messages. Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author.

A glossary The most recent version of the DSM has been publicly criticized for pathologizing what was once considered normal human behavior. Should the DSM continue on its current trajectory, we could ďŹ nd ourselves in a decade or so with a whole new set of technologyrelated diagnoses: E-diction: A neurological dependence on email that signiďŹ cantly interferes with sleep, work and relationships.

Ipho-bia: Fear of being without one’s cell phone for longer than an hour. OCE (Obsessive Compulsive Emailing): A compulsion to check your email constantly to ensure you don’t miss and fail to instantly return an important message. On par with OCT (Obsessive Compulsive Texting). E-pression: A low-grade depression caused by receiving mostly junk mail for two or more days.

Anxiet-E: Fear of receiving upsetting emails, or, alternatively, of missing important emails in your inbox with 6,000 messages, 300 of which are unread. PTS-E: Fear of receiving yet another crazy email from your ex. Insomn-Ea: The inability to disconnect from the Internet past your bedtime. E-lapse: When you’re up until after midnight writing emails, after swearing you’d never do this again.

An attitude of gratitude Does gratitude spike patience regarding delayed financial rewards? One psychology professor at Northeastern University thinks so. Three groups were assigned different tasks. One group recalled an event that made them thankful. Another group thought about an event that boosted happiness. The last group considered events of a typical day.

Books. A real-life Don Draper tells true tales of ‘Mad Men’ Fred S. Goldberg has a hard time picking a story when he’s asked to tell the craziest yarn from his three decades in advertising. “I’ve got so many stories! he proclaims. And it’s true. He has seen, heard, and done things that make “Mad Men seem like a trip to Disney World. For instance, it was Goldberg’s job to convince John Wayne to hold a product in his hands while shooting a commercial. He asked him nicely. The very tall Duke looked down at Goldberg and responded, “OK, why don’t you get the package and bring it over here

Goldberg has plenty of stories like these from his years as a mad man. He doesn’t mince words in his new book “The Insanity of Advertising: Memoirs of a Mad Man, which is filled with ribald tales. When asked what he thinks about the TV show “Mad Men, which began its final season Sunday, and the show’s depiction of the advertising world, he doesn’t have a hard time choosing his words. “They get the drinking and the smoking right, and they get the sex right. But it’s more of a soap opera, Goldberg says. He thinks the show doesn’t uncover the nitty gritty: “[It] has nothing to do with how hard it is to actually create innovative ideas and ads, he charges. LASSE EMIL KRISTIANSEN

Re: Features grievances, in list form, April 1113, 2014 I cannot but wholeheartedly endorse letter writer Jennifer Matrone’s assessment of fashion magazine GQ’s supposedly “sexy” Miranda Kerr cover. All I would like to add is a reminder to everyone that when we look at images such as this one, what we’re seeing isn’t even a real human! Most if not all fashion mags use photo-editing software to remove even the tiniest imperfections and to make their models appear even skinnier than they already are, and I would be shocked if Kerr’s GQ cover image wasn’t an example of this. Not only

is this an unhealthy and superficial portrayal of the female body, it is an unrealistic and artificial one as well. CHARLES JONSSON, VIA EMAIL

Red-hot Chase Utley remains ‘The Man’ MLB. Chase Utley’s go-ahead home run lifts Phillies to sweep over Marlins Sunday. On the five-year anniversary of the death of beloved Phillies announcer Harry Kalas, Chase Utley made one of Kalas’ most memorable statements ring true, even eight seasons later. “Chase Utley, you are the man, Kalas said during a Phillies win over the Braves back in 2006. Utley’s eighth-inning homer off Mike Dunn was the difference in the Phillies’ 4-3 win over the Miami Marlins. Utley led the Phillies with his bat and glove to a sweep over Miami. He was on base four times Sunday and boasts the highest on-base percentage in all of baseball (.537). “He’s a baller, Tony Gwynn Jr. said. “I watched him from a distance and he was always fun to watch. His legs are underneath him now and he’s driving the ball to all fields. The key for Utley is health. Forget about age and ailments. Kendrick’s skull. Kendrick just got his glove up in time to protect his face and catch the bullet. “I didn’t see it, Kendrick said. “I didn’t see it until the end. It was selfdefense with the glove. After making the grab, Kendrick took about a three-minute break before facing the next hitter. “I just wanted to calm down a bit, Kendrick said. The ball was hit so hard that it bruised the palm of Kendrick’s left hand. “I was just lucky that it didn’t hit me in the face, Kendrick said. Utley didn’t see the ball off Mathis’ bat but he’s obviously seeing the ball out of the pitcher’s hands when he’s in the box. “It’s going well, Utley said. “But there is still room for improvement. It’s hard to improve when you’re tallying hits half the time you’re up, but Utley is in one of those zones. But he still talks about his team. For Utley, it’s always team first. “We’re playing well as a team, Utley said. “It’s all about having trust in the guy hitting behind you.

If he’s healthy, he’s going to do damage. Utley, who is hitting an even .500, says his health is as good as the smoking bat. “I feel fine. I’m just trying to find some holes and put the ball in play. It’s about trying to put the ball in play and execute. Kyle Kendrick, who pitched six decent innings, was almost executed in the fourth inning. Resting Flyers fall in regular season closer The game meant nothing. But the Flyers didn’t care. The 82nd game of the season needed a shoot-out to decide who got 2 points, and when all was said and done it was the Hurricanes,

Bubba Watson won his second Masters by three shots. / GETTY IMAGES

Watson runs away with green jacket Golf. Bubba Watson put together a masterful Sunday en route to a second Masters title. It was emotional. It was impressive. And it resulted in a three-shot victory to clinch a second green jacket. Bubba Watson, who has been known just as much for crying tears of joy on the 72nd hole as he is for faltering down the stretch, solidified himself as a member of an exclusive group of golfers with multiple Masters championships. It was the second title for 35-year-old in three years. “I was telling my caddy coming up 18, ‘I don’t remember the last few holes,’ Watson said in Butler Cabin just prior to getting his jacket from Adam Scott. “I was just hanging on. Walking up 18 was a little easier this time.

Watson pulled away from 20-year-old Jordan Spieth, who held a twostroke lead of his own early in the round. “It was so much fun, said Spieth, who was vying to become the youngest Masters winner ever. “It really was. Even if I didn’t show it on the back nine, I took it all in. ... It was a dream come true. Watson (8-under) was able to post a Sunday 69, rebounding after a bogey to start his back nine, one of just a handful of scores in the 60s on the final day of the four-day marathon. Spieth was unable to piece together a single birdie after his seventh hole and slowly faded out of contention. The only others who had a chance to catch Watson, players like Jonas Blixt (5-under) Miguel Jimenez (4-under), Matt Kuchar (2-under) and Rickie Fowler (2-under), ran out of holes. completing a series sweep with a 6-5 win Sunday. Philadelphia trailed 4-1 early but rallied in the second period to score three straight goals to tie the game at four goals apiece. And then, after a Hurricanes strike in the waning moments of the third made it 5-4 Carolina, Wayne Simmonds scored with 10 seconds left to tie the

Flyers draft pick steals the show at Frozen Four NCAA. Union’s Shayne Gostisbehere looks at home in Philadelphia. Flyers fans were given a taste of the future this weekend as prospect Shayne Gostisbehere was named Most Outstanding Player after scoring a goal and two assists in leading Union College to its first national championship with a 7-4 win over Minnesota on Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center. He was credited with a remarkable plus-seven for his night’s work. The entertaining victory showed once again that David (Union has 2,200 students) can still

I guess we proved all those people wrong.” While the 2012 thirdround pick preferred sharing credit with the rest of his teammates, it was clear to everyone else he was the difference-maker. “I guess big-time players step up in big-time situations, and that’s what he did,” said Union coach Rick Bennett. “He did it all game tonight. Guys are going to feed off that. The magnitude of this game, he brought it.” JON MARKS @MetroPhilly
