Dirty water? Nope, state beaches make the grade Catch some waves. Many of the beaches that are part of or near Boston Harbor earned good marks this year. You don’t have to worry about loving that dirty water to call Boston your home. A recent beach rating gave high marks to the state’s beaches for water quality and safety. Save the Harbor/Save the Bay released on Sunday its second annual Beaches Report Card, which examined water quality and flagging accuracy throughout last year at Department of Conservation and Recreation managed beaches from Nahant to Hull. Beaches in Revere and Winthrop scored the highest in the report with 100 percent safety ratings. M Street Beach,

City Point and Carson Beach in South Boston scored a 99 percent rating. Part of the reason for the high ratings was last year’s dry summer. “Bacterial pollution is often caused by storm water discharges that accompany summer showers, squalls and storms, so less rain means cleaner water,” said Bruce Berman of Save the Harbor/Save the Bay.

US urges garment buyers to keep tabs on Bangladesh labor

After the collapse of the Rana Plaza building in April, Western retailers are concerned with corruption and a lack of trained building inspectors. / GETTY IMAGES

Safety. A catastrophic factory collapse in Dhaka has focused global attention on workplace risks and regulations. International garment buyers, particularly those in the United States, have a crucial role to play in ensuring the safety of Bangladesh’s garment workers, a senior government official said yesterday. “On the labor issue, abso-

lutely — buyers have a critical role, and they must be engaged,” U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman told a news conference in Dhaka, the Bangladeshi capital. Western retailers and brands are struggling to assess safety risks at thousands of Bangladesh garment factories after the April 24 collapse of the Rana Plaza building in a Dhaka suburb that killed more than 1,100 people. Their task is made tougher by a lack of robust safety rules, a severe shortage of trained building inspectors and equipment needed to

make proper safety assessments and widespread concern about corruption. Sherman said foreign companies should not give up on Bangladesh. “We are encouraging international investors not to turn their back on Bangladesh, because the solution is reform, not withdrawal,” she said. “Ultimately, success will depend on the will and commitment of industry, government, civil society and everyday Bangladeshis to come together to change the culture of workplace safety and worker rights in Bangladesh,” she added. New tech palaces: visionary HQs, or cursed trophies?

Campus. Tech companies construct their own buildings that match the way they work. While much of corporate America is retrenching on the real estate front, the four most influential technology companies in America are each planning headquarters that could win a Pritzker Architecture Prize for hubris. Amazon.com on Friday revealed plans for three verdant bubbles in downtown Seattle, joining Apple’s circular “spaceship,” Facebook’s Frank Gehry-designed openoffice complex and a new Googleplex on the list of

planned trophy offices. “It signals a desire, a statement, to say that we’re special, we’re different. We have changed the world and we are going to continue to change it,” said Margaret O’Mara, associate professor of history at the University of Washington, who has written about the building of Silicon Valley. “It’s also a reflection of robust bank accounts. They have a lot of cash.” Historically, however, when a company becomes preoccupied with the grandeur of its premises, it often signals a high point in its fortunes. These fantastical buildings may end up as little more than costly monuments to vanity and a loss of focus on the core business that made

for success in the first place. “I’ve been thinking the Apple spaceship is going to get nicknamed the ‘Death Star’ because the project is so big and the timing is so bad,” said hedge fund manager Jeff Matthews of Ram Partners. The building is coming to fruition just as Apple’s product cycles may be maturing, he explained. “It is such a classic contrary indicator that you just get the shakes.” He no longer holds Apple stock. Pattinson moves back

Robert Pattinson spent Memorial Day weekend moving back into his own home, a Spanish-style villa similar to ex-girlfriend Kristen Stewart’s and only a few miles away in L.A., according to TMZ. Stewart, meanwhile, was caught off-guard by a swarm of paparazzi in a parking garage this weekend and responded with a pair of middle fingers.

It was all fun and games with Amanda Bynes until she showed up to her court hearing in this wig. That wig is a cry for help. So what’s going on? The more apt question is: What isn’t? This Memorial Day weekend was such a busy one for the star, it’s hard to keep all of the crazy straight. She first showed up in court like this on Friday morning after being arrested for throwing a bong out of her New York City apartment window earlier that morning. She then spent the weekend tweeting various allegations that the NYPD sexually assaulted her. She peppered this with tweets to Rihanna with the shocking, “Chris Brown beat you because you’re not pretty enough.”

4

She followed that up with, “I almost named my new dog Rihanna.” She later deleted all posts related to the singer. On Monday, she looped back around to her NYPD allegations, stating that she is suing the NYPD for other various things related to the arrest, including bringing her to a mental hospital and locking her up overnight “for coming home after a facial and working out with my trainer like the good girl that I am.” She concluded by encouraging the public to anticipate another nose job and her impending career “as a singer/rapper!” I know a certain female singer from Barbados who probably won’t be making any cameos on Bynes’ forthcoming album.

ENTERTAINMENT

Some major ‘Development’ on Netflix Welcome back. Upon the Bluth family’s return this past weekend, cast members discuss plots and jokes so intricate that even they didn’t get them right away.

Although it’s hard to pinpoint precisely why “Arrested Development” failed to connect with many viewers during its initial three-season run, it seems likely that one reason was the show’s narrative density. While its main thrust was chronicling Michael Bluth’s efforts to corral his wildly dysfunctional family, the series featured countless plot lines that slowly shifted into focus thanks to asides and ever-evolving references that rewarded returning fans over sporadic viewership. Now that the show is back, creator Mitch Hurwitz spared no effort in creating 15 new episodes as complex as their predecessors. And the show’s cast is quick to observe that even they struggled to wrap their heads around dialogue that might be meaningful in as many as three or four different ways. “I’ll try to explain it clearly, but it will come out probably really confusing,” says Michael Cera. “But there was one scene that was like a five-page scene in the computer lab, and different sections of this scene would

appear in different episodes. So you’d be actually having to deliver a line that made sense in multiple, different contexts that actually play against each other, and we’d have to deliver it in a way that tries to work for all three of those. And then you’d see an episode and you have different information and it means something totally different.” Portia de Rossi insists that the structure of the episodes — which follow just one character’s point of view — should actually be easier to understand. “It’s easier to digest than the original series, because we were following storylines A, B, C, D, E and F,” she says. “Now, we’re just following this one character, so in a way it’s easier to watch, and we’ve got a little bit more time to tell the story.” What seems to excite the cast the most is creating something that seems largely unlike anything else on television. David Cross, the feckless Tobias, says that audiences will love the experience, but that it may take a little getting used to. “You’re going to realize, ‘There’s a structure to this that I wasn’t aware of when I started watching,’” he says. “That’s going to make everybody tripleexcited, and there’s going to be a sense of discovery to it that I think will be really exciting, and really define what TV can do.”

You know them as Tobias, George Michael, Maeby, Lucille, Michael and Lindsay, respectively, but they’re really David Cross, Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat, Jessica Walter, Jason Bateman and Portia de Rossi. / JESSE GRANT/GETTY IMAGES

Bateman abides

The one son who had no choice but to keep them all together Jason Bateman remains a unifying presence, despite the fact that only two episodes focus on Michael.. He says Netflix gave Hurwitz more freedom. “I hope that’s appreciated by the few people who do love the show,” he says.

“They seem to be a group who likes things somewhat challenging. And the fact that Netflix affords [Mitch] the opportunity to have these stories go out over 15 different episodes, that are so intertwined that the same scene will repeat, from different angles, in multiple episodes, is a really unique and exciting thing to be a part of, in working with his complexity and with Netflix’s distribution platform.”

Dan Kennedy is known to legions of fans of “The Moth as host of its weekly podcast, a medium where truth is held in high regard and fictionalizing is frowned upon. But after a 2008 memoir (“Rock On: An Office Power Ballad), Kennedy is making his first foray into fiction. “American Spirit follows the 40-something Matthew as his life slowly unravels. Kennedy says he could maybe relate to the character — but just maybe.

Why is the mid-life crisis so fascinating? I suppose because it really doesn’t matter who you are or what you do. When it occurs to you that you may, in the best-case scenario, be at the halfway done with your life [point], it tends to grab your attention. Having said that, I guess we never know what the halfway point is. History is full of people who didn’t realize they were middle aged at 14, you know? Have I started the interview on a positive note? Is 40-something Matthew based on anyone? As for Matthew, he’s a guy who can’t figure out what to do when his job is gone, his marriage is doomed, the money’s running out fast again, he’s drinking in suburban grocery store parking lots, eating hallucinogens and decongestants and then burning frequent flier miles flying around the world making a bigger mess of things for himself. ... I’ve, uh, never known anyone like him.

Bret Michaels revs up for debut of his RV show Open road. The rockin’ reality star wants to pimp your ride. After decades in the spotlight as a glam metal frontman, 50-year-old rocker reality star Bret Michaels is throwing a new skill into the mix: tricking out RVs and rocking the open road. For Michaels, RVing is much more than a means of transportation — it’s a lifestyle. The rock star holds tight to countless childhood memories in an RV and now spends nine months out of the year on the road, logging millions of miles. Sunday night, the self-proclaimed “ultimate RV adventurer” debuted a new show on the Travel Channel, “Rock my RV with Bret Michaels.” In the 16-episode series, the “Rock of Love” star leads a design team as they transform worn-out, dilapidated RVs into the most luxurious, over-the-top, tricked-out mobile mansions on the road. To get America revved up, the hands-on aficionado has five things he wants you to know about hitting the road in an RV.

Anyone at any age can rock an RV road trip. “I hope that [the show] shows that the open road is for any generation. My mom and dad were pretty young when they were doing it. It’s sort of like the Wild West. You go out there, and it’s a great adventure,” he says.

PLUS

More from Michaels

“Don’t be in a rush to get from Point A to Point B. I would not drive super fast. In an RV, you want to get into a little more of a cruise feel, and get a feel of the weight and the wind.”

Be mindful of the cramped quarters “When you take a road trip, whether you’re in a car or an RV, let me just assure you, you’re either going to bond for life and have great memories, or you may possibly never speak to each other again. This is my best advice: You want as much space as you can get. Stop

This is the kind of scenery that Bret Michaels — whose new show airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on the Travel Channel — is used to. / GETTY IMAGES

at a place where you can get out of that thing and get away from each other for a little bit. Go out, walk around, hike, stretch out, enjoy the scenery.”

Bigger is not better “If you’re going to start RVing, you might want to start with a smaller one and get a good feel of the groove of the road as you’re going. It’s just like starting out on anything. If you’re going to ride a Harley, you don’t want to jump on the biggest, heaviest one right away. You graduate up a little bit.”

They’re not just the chariot of choice for retirees

MORGAN ROUSSEAU

morgan.rousseau@metro.us

Every RV has its thorn

He takes tricking out your RV seriously “The first thing I have to do with most of these is look at the structure, the rust factor, what we can and can’t do — and most important

is weight. You can’t put too much weight on this thing. It could be quite dangerous. So it’s really a matter of function and fun. I’ve got to create both. I want it to be fun, but it’s got to function, and I want their experience when they leave to be enjoyable. A lot of these RV

+

shows, they build these in a garage, and they make things that could never possibly go down the road. My job is to make it be able to go wherever they want it — go under any bridge, go anywhere they want, any beach, any side of a mountain that they want to go.”

BREAKING ‘FREE’: HOW TO MAKE IT AS A FREELANCER There are many paths to building a successful career, but for those who have the drive, it can be worth it to break free and try being a freelancer. In fact, Intuit, a website that helps guide small businesses, predicts that by 2020, 40 percent of America’s workforce will be freelancers. oDesk, the world’s largest online workplace, predicts that by 2020, one in three workers will be hired online — allowing them to work wherever and whenever they want. Based on a new study from my company and oDesk, we found that 72 percent of employees want to quit their traditional jobs to be entirely independent, and 61 percent say that they likely will within two years. We discovered that freedom is the top reason why they want to quit. They want to put the “free” in their career and become a freelancer. Here are three tips on how to freelance successfully.

Become an expert Put all of your energy into becoming the top expert in

your field so that people seek you out, and you can win new business. For instance, you could become a top Ruby on Rails programmer in your niche or an expert on using LinkedIn to generate leads. This way, people can quickly identify you. It’s easier to find freelance positions if you have a focus area.

Create a strong Web presence If people can’t find you, they can’t hire you. Make sure you have a website, a blog and profiles both on freelancing sites (such as oDesk, for example) and on social networks like Twitter and Face-

On your website, you should include your portfolio, your résumé, testimonials, a list of your services and links to your profiles for online workplaces. This will highlight work you’ve done and prove to employers that you have valuable skills. On your social profiles, you should post tips and resources that will benefit others, because the more information you have, the more new customers you will get.

Innovate

Think like an entrepreneur You are your own business, and you have to always keep that in mind. This includes constantly networking, learning and coming up with

creative ways to sell yourself. Your skills today might not be worth as much in the future, so you have to learn to adapt and change. Learn new skills and seek opportunities before others have a chance to.

Staying healthy at the office You may claim that your job is killing you. And the truth is, it could actually be harming you. Poor lunch decisions when you’re on the go, uncomfortable chairs, and germy work stations might be taking a toll on your immune system. With a few thoughtful workplace changes, though, you can make your office a place of health and not harm. If you work in an office, you probably spend the majority of your day at your desk. Make sure it isn’t a breeding ground for bacteria. “Sanitize your workspace,” suggests life coach Stacia Pierce of Ultimate Lifestyle Enterprises. “Keep disinfectant wipes nearby to wipe down your mouse, keyboard and phone.” In other words, don’t just expect the nighttime cleaning crew to get rid of all

those lurking germs. Pierce also suggests getting fresh air by eating lunch outside whenever possible. Kathy Gruver, a health and wellness practitioner, agrees. “Get outside for fresh air and sunlight, which can help [with] that after-lunch feeling of sleepiness,” says Gruver. “Add in exercise and stretching throughout the day. We are still when waiting for things to load, fax and copy. This is the perfect time to stretch and move the body.” You might be surprised which careers offer the healthiest lifestyles. MLB power rankings | by Ryan Hannable No. 1

No. 2

Cardinals (32-17) An impressive 4-2 week has moved the Cardinals to the top of Metro’s power rankings. Pitching and defense was the theme of the week as they gave up an average of just 2.5 runs per game. With a win on Friday, starter Lance Lynn improved to 7-1 on the year. The Cardinals are wrapping up an eightgame road trip, which ends today in Kansas City.

No. 4

Rangers (32-17)

Yankees (30-19)

Pirates (31-19)

Texas dropped two of three to the Athletics at home last week, including a Yu Darvish start, thus the reason for their drop. They still have the best pitching the American League has to oer, posting a 3.44 ERA, tops in the AL as of Sunday. Texas is in the midst of a stretch of 12 of 16 games away from home.

The big news coming out of the Bronx last week involved yet another big-name injury as Curtis Granderson fractured his pinkie ďŹ nger Friday night and is expected to miss at least four weeks. The team is tied for ďŹ rst place in the AL East and is getting set for a Subway Series with the Mets to start the week.

The surprise Pirates are hanging tough in the loaded NL Central. Going into yesterday, Pittsburgh had won ďŹ ve of its last six games with pitching and defense the key, holding opponents to two runs or less in that stretch. Pirate teams have started seasons strong in the past, but eventually have fallen o. It’s another “wait and seeâ€? situation in Pittsburgh.

No. 3

No. 5

Braves (30-19)

Reds (31-19)

Winning eight of nine going into yesterday will allow you to move into the top three. The Braves beat up on lowly competition in the Dodgers, Twins and Mets, but did it in convincing fashion, outscoring teams 49-25 in that stretch.

After winning ďŹ ve in a row, one would have thought the Reds would have taken over ďŹ rst place, but they are in the same division as the Cards, so second place will have to do. The Reds have an intriguing matchup with Cleveland this week.

B’s-Penguins a soap opera on ice NHL playoffs. There are storylines aplenty in this year’s Stanley Cup Eastern Conference Finals.

Jaromir Jagr has four assists and zero goals in 12 postseason games this year with the Bruins. / GETTY IMAGES

In many ways, the NHL events that took place on March 27 and 28 make this 2013 Eastern Conference Finals between the Bruins and Penguins now seem almost predetermined. A few days before the league trade deadline, it appeared that Flames forward and future Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla would be flipped to Boston, except at the last minute he chose the Penguins instead. That meant Bruins prospect and defensemen Matt Bartkowski (a Pittsburgh native and Penguins fan growing up) would stay with Boston and the B’s later traded for former Penguins great Jaromir Jagr, who was then in Dallas. Iginla (four goals, eight assists

this postseason) has been better than both Jagr (four assists) and Bartkowski (one goal, one assist) combined, but the Bruins found a way to win two rounds in the playoffs with each guy playing a decent sized role. Jagr had 439 career goals when he was a superstar in Pittsburgh from 1990 to 2001 and had 65 goals in the playoffs over those 11 seasons in the Steel City. Given his recent struggles scoring the puck, the B’s are hoping Jagr may get an adrenaline boost against the Pens, playing against a city that he once owned. The Penguins have been the top team in the Eastern Conference all season so the fact that they reached this stage is less than surprising given their abundance of world-class talent in Sidney Crosby (seven goals, eight assists), Evgeni Malkin (four goals, 12 assists), Kris Letang (three goals, 13 assists) and James Neal (six goals, four assists) among others. Af-

Quest for the Cup The Bruins and Penguins are set to tangle beginning later this week. With the Western Conference semifinals still taking place, the NHL had yet to announce the dates and times for the Boston-Pittsburgh series as of yesterday afternoon. •

The Bruins enjoyed an off-day on Memorial Day, save for injured defenseman Andrew Ference. Ference worked out with team trainers at TD Garden yesterday and head coach Claude Julien said that Ference has been skating again in recent days. Boston will have a major roster decision to make in the coming days if Ference is ready to go for a portion of the team’s Eastern Conference Finals series against Pittsburgh. Both Torey Krug and Matt Bartkowski have contributed greatly.

ter eliminating the Rangers last Saturday, Bruins forward Milan Lucic even went so far as to compare the Penguins to the Miami Heat, given that their roster is flooded with big-name talent. Former Bruins center Marc Savard has never officially hung up his skates and he’s only 35 years old, but Penguins enforcer Matt Cooke effectively ended his career on March 7, 2010, with a vicious blow to the head (that somehow went unpunished by the NHL) in a game at Consol Energy Center. The B’s never really responded to Cooke’s dirty play and though now is certainly not the time to mete out justice three years later, it’s another interesting sidebar in this series. Cooke (three assists, 18 penalty minutes) has a much bigger role on the Penguins now than he did then.
