One dead, 15 hurt in fire at Allston home Fatal fire. Investigators are working to determine what caused a deadly early morning blaze on Linden Street. Investigators are probing the cause of yesterday’s deadly Allston fire that sent people jumping from the house to escape the fierce flames and whether the home was overcrowded with tenants, some of whom are Boston University students. A woman was killed and 15 others were injured when a fire ripped through the second and third floors of a three-story home that housed 19 people, including nine BU students. Of the 15 people injured, six were firefighters who raced to the scene at 87 Linden St., just after 6:30 a.m.,

and two were BU students. They were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to Steve MacDonald, a spokesman for the Boston Fire Department. Firefighters, who were ordered out of the building at points during the blaze, eventually found a woman on the third floor. “At some point firefighters were informed that the

residents could not find one person. She was found in the attic, deceased,” said MacDonald. He would not say whether she was a BU student. Others injured during the fire tried to escape the burning and smoke-filled building by jumping to safety. “We know at least one person jumped off the (porch) roof,” MacDonald said. At least three other people had

to be rescued by firefighters climbing ladders. The fire caused $600,000 worth of damage to the house, which had been home to 19 people, according to McDonald. He said investigators are looking into how many people are allowed to live there. Neighbors said they heard a lot of loud commotion coming from the house around 1:30 a.m. “It was really loud, every week they are loud,” said Eunatee Park, who lives across the street. Park awoke the next morning to fire crews trying to put out the nearby fire and people who lived next door being taken away on stretchers. “(The victims) looked scared. They were waiting for some people to help them,” she said.

Another fire hits Linden Street In January 2012, there was an early morning blaze just a few doors down from yesterday’s deadly fire. More than 60 firefighters battled a three-alarm fire at 84 Linden St. around 7 a.m. that day, according to BU Today. There were no fatalities, but one BU student suffered a brain injury after leaping from the second floor, and six others were taken to area hospitals. METRO

Bombing suspects. Probe into whether brothers received help continues Alleged Boston Marathon bombers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev likely knew more about bomb-making than they could have learned from an al Qaeda magazine, according to a government document obtained by ABC News which suggests the brothers may have had outside help. Investigators are scrutinizing Tamerlan’s six-month trip to Russia to determine whether he received training to carry out the deadly attack. On Friday, 19-year-old Dzhokhar was relocated to Devens Federal Medical Center, a prison hospital 40 miles from Boston. He had been receiving treatment at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where some bombing victims

Tensions. Two police officers shot as Italian government sworn in Two Italian police officers were shot and wounded yesterday outside the prime minister’s office in Rome as new premier Enrico Letta’s government was being sworn in just a miles away. It was not clear whether the attack by a man police said was unemployed was linked to the launch of the new government at a time of deep political divisions and social tensions exacerbated by a long slump in the economy. One of the officers was shot in the neck, hitting his spinal cord, and he was in a serious condition, surgeons said. The other was shot in the leg. In a surreal scene, outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti received the official trumpet salute in the courtyard of the renaissance Chigi palace before walking across the cordonedoff square, past police

crouching over the scene of the shooting, looking for evidence. Newly installed Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said the attack appeared to be an “isolated act that did not suggest any wider security threat. But there were immediate calls for politicians to try to calm a volatile public mood. REUTERS

Republican senators on Sunday pressed President Barack Obama to intervene in Syria’s civil war, saying America could attack Syrian air bases with missiles but should not send in ground troops. How did you connect with the “people” your book references? I was living and teaching in Venezuela in 2006-2007, and my students were political organizers from across Venezuela who had come to study in Caracas. They provided intimate access to people that others might not be able to interview: radical organizers from across the country, former guerrillas, militia members and leaders of a variety of social movements that contributed to Hugo Chavez’s rise to power. Chavez is a polarizing figure in Latin America. What did you make of that? Chavez was certainly a polarizing person, but social change rarely comes without polarization. In some senses it was this very question that drew me to study Venezuela:

O’Brien: Don’t mess with Boston

As host of Saturday night’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, the annual event where journalists and celebrities mix with the Washington elite, host Conan O’Brien made the following amazing observation about

his hometown: “It’s been said recently that you don’t mess with Boston,” said the Brookline native and Harvard grad. “As someone who grew up there, I’d like to echo that sentiment. It’s really pretty simple: If you’re going to pick on a city, don’t choose one where nine out of 10 people are related to a cop.”

Rose McGowan: Blond ambition Rose McGowan says her new platinum tresses give her a toughness she hadn’t had before. “Part of [going blond] is because I’ve been told [brunettes] look accessible and pleasing to the men in L.A. so as not to scare them,” she says. “But then, I realized, I always scare them, so f— it. I’m just going to do whatever I want.” McGowan is so fierce during our interview, it is hard to believe that the whole point in her talking to me is to promote the limitededition rose wine, Apothi Rose (pronounced like the flower, hence the hiring of McGowan; get it?). “I only drink Rosé, isn’t that funny?” she says. What’s not funny? The current battles of the sexes in Hollywood. “It’s all frat guys. The execs and the agents. They are people who went to law school, and it wasn’t sexy enough, so they wanted to come have sex with actresses. It’s not like they want to be a part of great filmmaking or anything.”

Martha Stewart once turned to online dating site Match. com to help her find a boyfriend — but she couldn’t go through with it. “I started laughing halfway down the page,” she tells Matt Lauer in an interview. “It was, like, impossible.” But Stewart insists, at least, that if she does go through with an online dating profile, she wouldn’t hide her identity. “I want to do my real thing,” she says. I would totally date Martha Stewart, if only for her to re-tile my bathroom after sex.

While Gwyneth Paltrow has received high marks from fashionistas for the sheer side panels in the gown she wore to the “Iron Man 3” premiere last week, not everyone was a fan of the underwear-free look. The Oscar-winning actress tells Ellen DeGeneres that she was “humiliated” by the bad press the gown received. “I kind of had a disaster. I was doing a show and I changed there and I went and I couldn’t wear underwear,” Paltrow says of the decision to rock the look. “Let’s just say everyone went scrambling for a razor.”

So there’s a contained sort of mythology that the movies answer to, and that’s something that Marvel is continuously creating. So yeah, he might show up, I don’t know. I’d be down for it. Is there anything you can do to lobby for that? No, but you can get on it. Just park yourself outside of [Marvel Studio head] Kevin Feige’s house. I’m sure that will go over very well. Well, get your friends. Don’t just do it by yourself. That’s not enough. That’s weird. How does the balance between making your TV show, “House of Lies,â€? and your ďŹ lm work? It’s great. Michael Bay stole your money Box office. The “Transformers” director is again on top of the charts. Mark Wahlberg’s dark comedy “Pain & Gain” brought enough box office muscle to knock Tom Cruise out of the No. 1 spot on movie charts in the United States and Canada. “Pain & Gain” took in $20 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters over its first three days, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. Cruise’s scifi thriller “Oblivion” slipped to second place with $17.4 million. “Iron Man 3” hauled in $195.3 million in 42 international markets, distributor Walt Disney Co. said, a total that surpassed the international opening of “The Avengers.” The movie arrives in the United States and Canada on Friday to kick off Hollywood’s lucrative summer blockbuster season. Receipts for “Pain & Gain” beat pre-weekend forecasts for a debut of at least $15 million.

The film is based on the real-life story of Miami bodybuilders who kidnap a wealthy deli owner and plan to steal his fortune. When their plot goes awry, the criminals scramble to escape being caught. “Oblivion,” a post-apocalyptic drama about the last humans on Earth, brought its twoweek total in North America to $64.7 million. Comcast Corp.’s

Universal Pictures estimated international sales through Sunday at $134.1 million, bringing the film’s worldwide total to $198.8 million. Baseball drama “42,” about Jackie Robinson’s debut as Major League Baseball’s first black player, finished in third place with $10.7 million domestically. In fourth place, new romantic comedy “The Big Wedding”

earned $7.5 million. Despite a big-name cast including Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon and Katherine Heigl, the movie was ravaged by critics. North American ticket sales for all movies this year reached nearly $2.9 billion, running 11.8 percent behind sales at the same point in 2012, according to the box office division of Hollywood.com. JOBS

Get a job after graduation

3 12 45

Martin Yate, the best-selling author of “Knock ‘Em Dead: Secrets & Strategies for First-Time Job Seekers,” has these five tips for students.

PLUS

You’re free

Plan ahead

The good news is that you got what you wanted: independence. The bad news is that no one is going to pick up after you anymore. Whether you fail or succeed in life is now all up to you.

You are at the start of what will be a 50-year work life that will feature job changes about every four years. You can either guide the trajectory of your life by learning about career management and become successful, or you can leave it up to chance and almost certainly fail.

Take aim

No one in corporate America has the time or inclination to find you a nice job based on your degree and objectives. You have to decide on a target job, learn about it and go get it. There is no time to waste.

Think it out

Do’s and don’ts

Many grads want to be successful and have their own business right now. Many try, and most fail and never try again. This failure often stems from lack of practical business skills. All too soon, wage discrimination will push you out of corporate America, so use your core professional career as on-the-job training for making your later entrepreneurial efforts successful.

Talk to the robots (mostly) Do: Maximize keyword searching

“Say they’re looking for a candidate who’s detailed, can communicate and is a good editor. When they get résumés, they’ll search the system for those keywords. If you don’t have those words on your résumé, even if those skills are displayed differently, your résumé is likely not to be identified.” Don’t: Go overboard

“I recently heard an interesting story: There were 10 openings in this company and one person’s résumé was identified with every keyword search, though the jobs were completely different. The candidate included keywords for every job, made the text white [so it was disguised] and put the résumé over [that text]. They tossed the résumé when they learned of the stunt.” TRUDY STEINFELD, NYU CAREER SERVICES

16

Applying yourself. Tricking the tracking system to get a gig The job application process is shifting due to applicant tracking systems, which are online résumé aggregators that most midsize to large nonprofit and corporate entities use to weed through candidates. Trudy Steinfeld, assistant vice president and executive director of the NYU Wasserman Center for Career Development, helps you navigate the new system.

Old is new: Fax it “Especially when applying to small organizations, fax your résumé. Most offices still have a

machine and — guess what? — it never rings,” Steinfeld says. “I’ve noticed that in my own office, when the fax machine rings, people wonder, ‘What could that be?’ It could be your résumé. It sounds crazy, but the reality is, I test this out all the time with employers and they say, ‘Yeah, if I get a résumé over the fax machine, I’m curious.’ Say, ‘I also sent this online, but I wanted to make sure it got into your hands.’”

Quantify results “If you’ve worked on a project

Narrow it down

You will need a résumé focused on a specific job and a LinkedIn profile that reflects that message. Both are important parts of the new job search, so take advantage of them before you graduate.

and there are quantifiable results, provide the numbers,” she says. “Employers are into analytics; having an actual measure of your success can really help. Say you want to be a fundraiser. If the organization that currently employs you was taking in $1 million a year when you arrived, and now brings in $1.5 million a year, say that. People are results-oriented.”

Don’t go there “Applicant tracking systems can’t read wacky fonts,” Steinfeld says. “Even if you’re the most qualified candidate, your résumé won’t be identified by the system if it is in an unusual font.”

Need to detox? Try this Yoga. Jennifer Aniston’s trainer shows us how. After one too many cocktails at dinner, it can be tempting to hit the juicer to detox. But did you ever think that a yoga routine might have the same cleansing effect? Mandy Ingber, who has sculpted the bodies of Jennifer Aniston and Kate Beckinsale, says that detoxing doesn’t have to be all about what you put into your body — what you put into your mind is just as key. “When you abstain from old, self-defeating talk and replace it with positive self-talk, your body chemistry changes, making you feel lighter and happier. When we reprogram ourselves this way, we come from a happy and satisfied place of gratitude and make healthier, self-loving choices. I have tried whipping myself into shape, and I have adopted the positive approach that I use now. This has given me consistency and allowed my body to fall into place effortlessly, as if

Start with some meditation on all the good your body can do, and check out more detoxing moves in the pages of her book. — Moves excerpted from “Yogalosophy: 28 Days to the Ultimate Mind-Body Makeover” by Mandy Ingber, published by Seal Press, a member of the Perseus Books Group.

Celtic pride remains alive NBA. Jason Terry finally came through for the Celtics, just before it was too late. The game certainly wasn’t pretty, but the outcome was for Boston. The Celtics gave up a 20-point second-half lead to the Knicks yesterday, in a game that looked to have summed up all of Boston’s issues in the quarterfinal series. But unlike the first three games, the C’s held their ground and beat New York in overtime, 97-90. Peerless Pierce

Second half woes remain for Celtics Boston once again fell flat on its face in the second half, scoring just 30 total points after scoring 32 in the second quarter. But somehow, some way, the team kept its head above water and never lost complete control. There’s not much time to celebrate though: Boston is still down 3-1 in the series heading back to New York, where J.R. Smith awaits. Boston’s 20-point thirdquarter lead evaporated when Kevin Garnett left the game after a fourth foul. The Knicks went on a 12-2 run before Garnett was inserted back into the lineup, but that didn’t stop the bleeding. New York clawed its way back and trailed by just three points heading into the fourth quarter thanks to Raymond Felton’s 16 third-quarter points compared to the Celtics’ 14 total points. For the C’s it’s the first positive sign of the series, and offers at least a glimmer of hope that all is not lost. Not yet, anyway. Boston scored 54 points in the first half before once again breaking down in the second half, where it scored just 30 points. It looked like overtime would be nothing more than five extra painful minutes of basketball before the season’s obituary would be written. But Jason Terry, long considered a big-game player by pretty much everybody around the NBA, had other ideas. He scored the C’s final nine points in OT, including a transition 3-pointer to give Boston a lead it wouldn’t give back this time. “He was great,” Doc Rivers said of Terry. “That’s what he does. He’s made so many big shots in his career. … That transition three is something he works on all the time. And you knew once he got it what he was going to do.” Despite Boston being on the brink of elimination, the C’s are taking it one game — and possession — at a time. “We just have to play every possession, every defensive possession like it’s our last,” Jeff Green said. “We have nothing to lose. All the pressure is on them to win the game.”

Boston outscored Houston 28-10 in the series and recorded 41 total hits in the four games, 22 for extra bases. The win improved the Red Sox’s record to 18-7, tying the franchise mark for most wins in the month of April. John Lackey, making his first start since suffering a bicep injury in Toronto, led the way in his first home start

since Tommy John surgery. He worked six innings and allowed one run on five hits and struck out four, picking up his first win of the season. Clayton Mortensen, Koji Uehara and Andrew Bailey pitched three scoreless innings of relief to preserve the win. The hit brigade for the Red Sox in the series continued with an 11-hit attack yesterday. Daniel Nava, David Ortiz (two RBIs) and Mike Carp (RBI) each had two hits leading the way for the Sox. Stephen Drew also added a two-run triple, his second of the year in the win. The Red Sox will be off today before beginning a threegame set in Toronto tomorrow (7:07 p.m., NESN).
