Factory 63 design challenge heats up

Tomorrow at Fort Point’s newest apartment block, Factory 63, the semifinalists will be chosen for the Design Museum Boston’s Street Seats Design Challenge. The private event whittles around 170 international designers’ blueprints for public seating to 20 semifinalists, who each receive a grant to make their designs for an outdoor installation around Fort Point Channel in April. Until then, the finalists’ work, complete with QR codes, will be on display in F63’s lobby Design Innovation Gallery. The exhibition will be open to the public from Feb. 28 through March 31. With Factory 63 welcoming its first tenants this month, opening doors to the Innovation District’s innovators is the icing on the cake for developers Gerding Edlen. “This competition harkens back to the mission of the Design Museum Boston: to stop and pause and think for a second.
