Wobbly knees NFL news

‘High’ times Redskins coach Mike Shanahan has an odd obsession with Tim Hightower. He says the veteran will be his starter even coming off a torn ACL. He is a poor bet to stay healthy or hold off the impressive Roy Helu. Avoid the temptation of the nominal starter.

Warren went 32-4 in 65 games in his career at North Carolina, where he was teammates with Mets prospect Matt Harvey in 2009.

them to see me and have confidence in me,” Warren said. “I proved to myself that I can pitch at this level.” He’ll get the chance Friday night as he makes his major league debut in place of an in-

jured CC Sabathia. “It wasn’t where he saw just right-handed hitters,” manager Joe Girardi said of the spring start against Boston. “He saw pretty much their full lineup. I thought he pitched down in the zone; I thought he was effective in. I thought his breaking ball was outstanding. I thought he used his changeup. It did stick out in my mind. It gave us a lot to think about when we decided who our 12th pitcher was.” LARRY FLEISHER

Let’s play a quick game of word association. You say “cow,” I say “steak.” I say “Adrian Peterson,” you say “beast.” Right? Wrong. Each fantasy football season is an independent exercise. We don’t get points for last year’s stats, which means we need to throw out some initial impressions we have of certain players.

The No. 1 pick in the NBA draft went exactly as planned with the selection of Anthony Davis. But it was the No. 2 pick that added to a very Kentucky night, as teammate Michael Kidd-Gilchrest went to the Bobcats. The third straight SEC player went next, with Florida’s Bradley Beal at No. 3 to the Wizards, while Dion Waiters went No. 4 to the Cavaliers and Thomas Robinson joined the Kings at No. 5.

Adam Warren was a nonroster invitee to spring training and although he allowed eight runs in 15 innings, there was a road start against the Red Sox that opened some eyes in the Yankee organization. It was a last-minute start on March 22 in place of David Phelps, whose wife went into labor that night. Facing Boston’s regular lineup, he allowed two hits in four scoreless innings. “That was pretty [good] for

MAKING A BAD IMPRESSION

Over the last 10 seasons, six starting running backs have sustained ACL tears. Players that sustained the injury early in the season, such as Jamal Lewis and Deuce McAllister, were able to return the following season and post useful lines. But backs that went down later in

the year (Terrell Davis, Edgerrin James, Kevin Smith), were utterly inept. Adrian Peterson tore his ACL, MCL and meniscus in Week 16 last season, yet his average draft position still sits in the second round. History proves the Peterson name isn’t worth that risk as workload reductions and knee complications lurk.

Not burning The Falcons are ready to overhaul their offense under new coordinator Dirk Koetter. The days of Michael Turner slamming his oversized thighs/stomach into the line 350 times are over and the era of vertical passing/screens is in session. Still, Turner is still being selected in the third round because owners remember him as “The Burner.” Bad idea.

Peterson is going way too high in drafts for a guy coming off major knee reconstruction surgery.

Bobby Parnell RP, Mets Frank Francisco (oblique) is down, opening up the closer’s chair for the hardthrowing Parnell. He’ll get all the save chances.

Anthony Rizzo 1B, Cubs The Cubs finally called up Rizzo earlier this week. He smashed 23 homers in 69 Triple-A games earlier this season.
