Voices of Winnipeg showcases humans who inhabit the city ‘Good stories to tell.’ U of W students inspired by New York social media page BERNICE PONTANILLA

A pair of Winnipeggers is taking a bite out of a popular social media page in the Big Apple, showing off Manitobans in a unique way. Friends Almaz Aschalew and Christine Izere, both 19 and students at the University of Winnipeg, started The Voices of Winnipeg page on Facebook in May. Both said it was the Humans of New York that inspired them to get started. The Humans of New York page has more than 5.8 million followers on Facebook alone and has spawned a website, Twitter handle, Instagram account and even a book. “We were very interested in that — we would look at the pictures and we liked the stories,” said Izere, who’s studying international development. “We thought, there’s a lot of people in Winnipeg that have good stories to tell, so why not show it,” added Aschalew, who is earning a bachelor of arts. Aschalew and Izere said

“We’re hoping that people are more open to what we’re trying to do. They shouldn’t be afraid to tell us (their stories) because we’re not judging them.” Christine Izere, co-founder of The Voices of Winnipeg
they were prevented from using the “humans” moniker, and went through several
different names before settling on The Voices of Winnipeg.
The biggest hurdle they’ve had to overcome, they said, has been people’s hesitation
of either having their picture taken or sharing a bit of their lives. “It was definitely tough. At the beginning we thought we’d just go up to people and say, ‘This is what we’re doing,’ and they’ll be like, ‘Sure, okay, take my picture,’” said Izere. “But they were creeped
out and asking, ‘Who are you,’” added Aschalew with a chuckle. The friends plan on seeking Winnipeggers out at festivals this summer, to showcase the diversity of people and stories that exist in the city, as well as break down prejudices based on how people look or dress.
