London becoming a safer place to drive On the roads. City jumps nine spots on Allstate study SCOTT TAYLOR

London motorists could be on the road to lower insurance premiums if collision statistics from Allstate Canada continue to trend in the years to come. According to Allstate’s fifth annual Safe Driving Study, based on customer claims data over a two-year period from

July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2013, customer claims in London were down 14 per cent. The study ranked 50 Canadian communities in Ontario, Alberta, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia by the frequency of collisions per 100 cars insured by the company. London placed 31st this time around, a rise of nine positions from the previous study. While that shows promise, Allsate’s manager of external affairs Nicole Watts said it would take a few more good report cards before premiums in the city drop. “The information data in this study doesn’t affect any-

one’s insurance rate,” she said. “Every insurance situation is unique. It gives us a good idea of collision trends, but it doesn’t speak to the whole picture.” But the improvement in col-

lisions, Watts added, is a good way to influence premiums. Much of the credit for that can go to greater awareness about safe driving. “People realize the dangers of driving under the influence and the dangers of distracted driving, keeping a safe distance from other cars and adapting to the weather. Hopefully, people are putting their winter tires on, taking their time and making sure that they’re decreasing their speeds and adapting their driving to the conditions.” Overall, Medicine Hat, Alta., is the safest place to drive, while Milton, Ont., came in last.
