Baby makes smooth landing FACEBOOK PHOTO/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Successful delivery on Toronto-bound flight made thanks to India-trained doctor Baby’s family immigrating to Alberta For 25 years in his native India, Balvinder Singh Ahuja worked as a pediatrician, treating thousands of children, saving many lives. For the past six months in Toronto, however, Ahuja has been learning to drive a truck, convinced it was too difficult a process to practise as a foreign-trained doctor in Canada. But his experience as a veteran physician kicked into high gear Saturday when he performed an emergency delivery aboard an Air India flight from New Delhi to Toronto,

Materials on board Ahuja quickly gathered what he thought he would need — and then improvised. Scotch was used to sterilize scissors. Pieces of thread were used to tie the umbilical cord. The microwave was used to warm a blanket for the baby. Empty cartons of food were used to lift the mother’s legs.

turning a passenger cabin into a birthing room within minutes and quickly improvising with makeshift instruments. The baby, a girl, was born 45 minutes later as the plane was cruising at about 11,000 metres over Kazakhstan. “It was very exciting.... I’m glad I was able to help,” Ahuja said in a phone interview while en route to Collingwood in a tractor-trailer. Ahuja, who was flying from New Delhi on Air India on Saturday, had settled into his seat and was almost asleep when a call went out on the loudspeaker, asking if there was a doctor or nurse aboard.

The baby was delivered by pediatrician Balvinder Singh Ahuja, left, of Brampton. The parents are Kuljeet Kaur, on bed, and her husband Ranjodh Singh Gill, second from right. The baby’s name is Aakash Leen Kaur — Aakash means “sky” in Hindi — and she weighed in at seven pounds.

He went into the back and saw Kuljit Kaur, about 37 weeks pregnant, on the floor obviously in labour and in pain. Her husband, Ranjodh Gill, was next to her.

Mother of murder suspect charged LIAM CASEY/TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Toronto police are accusing Hyacinth Moore, the mother of alleged serial murderer Mark Garfield Moore, of helping her son destroy evidence. Moore, 49, was charged the same day the jury began deliberations in the trial of a man accused of killing her other son. She was arrested late

yesterday afternoon and faces four charges: Accessory after the fact, obstruct peace officer, conspiracy to commit indictable offence and accessory after fact to murder. The news comes exactly a week after Mark Moore, 27, was arrested and charged with four first-degree murders and 54

Highways to be shut for race

Despite grumblings that it provides minimal economic benefits, city council voted overwhelmingly to close the Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway for a triathlon July 22. Councillors also toughened the rules to limit the number of downtown highway closures for events. The only other event approved for expressway closure is the Ride for Heart, which raises about $4 million in charitable donations. Organizers of the Ironman event promise to donate up to $30,000 to Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment’s Team Up Foundation.

CITY COUNCIL

Vote upsets elephant keepers The Toronto Zoo’s elephant keepers are up in arms over a late night city council vote to send the animals to a sanctuary rather than an accredited facility. “No offence to any city (councillors) that made the decision, but they’re quite honestly not quali-

fied to make a decision on what’s best for these elephants,” an angry Vernon Presley, one of seven elephant keepers at the zoo told the Toronto Star last night. Council voted 31-4 late Tuesday to send the zoo’s three remaining elephants Toka, Thika and Iringa, to the sprawling Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) sanctuary in San Andreas Calif., rather than a zoo accredited with the American Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Ramdat Punwassie found a snake in his bathroom. Police reported two incidents of snakes sliding into Woolner Avenue apartments.

It was a late-night trip to the bathroom Ramdat Punwassie will never forget. Around 10 p.m. Tuesday, he went to the washroom in his one-bedroom apartment at 220 Woolner Ave., near Jane Street and St. Clair Avenue West, to find a one-metre snake curled atop the toilet seat. He quickly shut the door, woke his brother and called 911. “You can’t take a chance, it could bite me, it could be poisonous,” he said. Police arrived a few hours later to find the snake coiled up in the bathtub. They told him it was a ball python and that it wasn’t poisonous. Punwassie said he thinks the snake came in through the toilet and even pushed up the seat, which is normally closed,

Incredibly, police had been on the street, not even a block away, less than 24 hours before for another snake sighting. Around 2 a.m. Tuesday, a corn snake was found at 190 Woolner Avenue, after apparently sliding through a wall. “I guess it’s getting cold, so the snakes are coming in,” said Sgt. Bradley Fisher. “They’ve decided they’re not gonna stay in the walls.” Most of the residents at 190 Woolner seemed disgusted at the thought of snakes crawling around the building. Acquitted of G20 weapons charges Gary McCullough

Man found with crossbow a few blocks from G20 security fence

A judge has acquitted a Haliburton man who was arrested with a loaded crossbow in his car’s roof carrier. Justice David Fairgrieve found Gary McCullough not guilty of weapons dangerous yesterday after a protracted trial. “The offence that was charged ... requires more than speculation that there was a possibility of an acci-

dental discharge,” Fairgrieve said. At the same time, the judge ordered the man, who has a history of mental illness, to enter into a threeyear peace bond to ensure he continues to see a Whitby psychiatrist and has no access to weapons. He was arrested near Yonge Street and The Esplanade on June 24, 2010, just two days before world

leaders met here. Police unloaded the crossbow, a slingshot, propane canisters, chainsaw, knife, hatchet and other objects from his roof carrier. Const. George Maxwell testified that McCullough told him he owned the crossbow in case he encountered a neighbour who had broken into his car at his Haliburton property. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Homicide rate hits 44-year low

Klees. Shake-up

Police in Canada reported 56 fewer cases than 2009 Homicides by common-law spouses rose to 45% The homicide rate in Canada has fallen to its lowest level in 44 years, Statistics Canada reported yesterday. Although the figures are for 2010, the downward trend is continuing in Toronto this year. “It shows the world isn’t going to hell in a hand-basket,” said Ron Melchers, criminology professor at the University of Ottawa. “This really does confirm the trend we’ve seen in general crime stats.” With 40 homicides reported as of Thursday, Toronto is on target to come in well below the 60 murders reported in 2010.

Highest rates For the second straight year, Thunder Bay recorded the highest homicide rate (4.2 per 100,000 population) followed by Saskatoon and Regina (3.7). Of the major cities, Winnipeg and Edmonton ranked the highest. The metropolitan Toronto area was well down the list with 90 homicides in 2010 for a homicide rate of 1.4.

Since 1993, the lowest homicide total reported by Toronto police was the 47 murders that occurred in 1999. However, Toronto po-

lice are not putting much stock in the latest statistics because crime rates can change quickly. In the Statistics Canada report, the figures are for the metropolitan Toronto area and are not specific to the city proper. The national agency did note a considerable shift to more homicides being committed by a commonlaw spouse than a legal spouse or dating partner. In 2010, common-law spouses accounted for 45 per cent of homicides committed by an intimate partner followed by legal spouses and dating partners at 28 per cent. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Snowmen join ‘Torontoland’ promotion TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

In hot spots around the city, residents will soon see 17 different versions of Frosty the Snowman designed by Toronto artists. The fiberglass giants will be posed in front of hotels, theatres and other attractions. The snowmen are part of a $1.2-million advertising campaign by Tourism Toronto to promote some holiday cheer while also filling the city’s hotels at the slowest time of year.

That’s up 20 per cent from the $1 million the marketing organization for the tourism industry spent last year. Nearly half the city’s hotel rooms are empty in December, compared to a year-round average occupancy rate of 68 per cent, as convention business grinds to a halt for the holidays. In a bid to boost the numbers, Tourism Toronto launched a holiday campaign four years ago aimed

at encouraging people to come and shop, dine and see the sights while enjoying an overnight stay. “There’s no place like it for an urban holiday experience when you combine shopping, theatre and dining with the holiday lights,” says Andrew Weir, Tourism Toronto’s vice-president communications. “From the Nutcracker to Mary Poppins to skating in Nathan Phillips Square, it was just a matter of getting that story

out and selling the idea of the magic of the holidays in the city.” The Torontoland campaign, which includes radio and bus shelter ads, is aimed mainly at residents of the rest of Ontario. Through its U.S. partner, Tourism Toronto is also reaching out to New York, Boston and Philadelphia. But it also expects to attract some local residents looking to treat themselves.

Yuletide deals New this year is a 15 per cent discount on all participating hotel and restaurants and up to 20 per cent off certain attractions listed on the website www.seetorontonow.com. A one-night stay starts at $99 and runs to $179 depending on the location and quality of the hotel.

Protests put cities through hoops There are signs patience is wearing thin with the Occupy movements across Canada. Some cities are telling protesters they want their public spaces back. In Toronto, an aide to Mayor Rob Ford said the city will consider moving protesters from a space next to St. James Cathedral if it’s no longer a “peaceful protest but rather an occupation.” In Calgary, they’ve been told to leave Olympic Plaza as it’s booked for a cultural festival. In Edmonton, a downtown charity event has had to be scrapped because the space is occupied.

Burning veils in the fight for freedom Yemen leader offers to sign power transfer deal giving him immunity from persecution if he steps down Hundreds of Yemeni women yesterday set fire to traditional veils to protest the government’s brutal crackdown against the popular uprising, as overnight clashes in the capital and another city killed 25 people, officials said. In the capital Sanaa, the women spread a black cloth across a main street and threw their full-body veils, known as makrama, onto a pile, sprayed it with oil and set it ablaze. They chanted: “Who protects Yemeni women from the crimes of the thugs?” But, the protest was not related to women’s rights or issues surrounding the Islamic veils — rather, the act of women burning their clothing is a symbolic Bedouin tribal gesture signifying an appeal for help

Yemeni women burn veils in a symbolic and traditional move in Sanaa yesterday to protest the regime’s crackdown on female protesters. At least 25 Yemeni civilians, government troops and dissident soldiers were killed in continuing violence in the wake of President Ali Abdullah Saleh’s most recent pledge to resign.

Thousands flee Bangkok floods Panic sets in as waters advance Tens of thousands of Bangkok residents jammed bus stations and highways yesterday to flee Thailand’s flood-threatened capital as the city governor ordered evacuations in two northern districts for the first time since the crisis began. Floodwaters have killed 373 people nationwide since July and caused billions of dollars in damage. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has repeatedly

vowed to protect the capital, but assessments have turned grims, and everywhere people are preparing for flooding. Two of the city’s 50 districts — Don Muang and Bang Phlat — are already partially submerged, and Gov. Sukhumbhand Paribatra said residents should leave for safer city shelters. “This is the first time I am using the term ‘evacuation,’ the first time I’m re-

ally asking you to leave,” he said. Thousands of people packed Bangkok’s Mo Chit bus terminal as satellite maps showed a city almost entirely surrounded by water flowing from the north and on toward the Gulf of Thailand. Hundreds of other residents clamoured aboard packed military trucks with their belongings, desperate to leave.

The huge volume of water has turned roads into virtual rivers and swamped gas stations and homes. Last week, Yingluck ordered key floodgates opened in Bangkok to help drain runoff through urban canals to the sea, but there is great concern that rising tides in the Gulf of Thailand this weekend could slow critical outflows and flood the entire city. VERDICT AUGURS ILL FOR EGYPT, Pro-democracy side condemns outcome on Twitter Bad omen for parliamentary elections, some say In a verdict that disappointed pro-democracy activists, two policemen who beat a man to death were convicted yesterday of the lesser charge of manslaughter and given a relatively light sentence in a case that helped spark Egypt’s uprising. Relatives of defendants Mahmoud Salah and Awad Ismail Suleiman were still outraged by the sentence of seven years in prison each for the two officers. They smashed benches in the courtroom in the northern port of Alexandria and attacked the slain man’s uncle and lawyers despite the presence of other police and military troops. Pro-democracy activists expressed disappointment

Hair today, still here tomorrow? A community of more than one thousand African immigrants have occupied a rundown structure once used by an elite diving unit of the Libyan navy as a training field. They came from all over the country in February and sought refuge in the abandoned structure, awaiting an uncertain future in Libya or facing the risks of deportation.

not only with the verdict but also with the fact that it was closed to the public, which they saw as signs that the revolution that ousted longtime leader Hosni Mubarak in February was having little effect on getting rid of deep-seated corruption in Egypt. The slain man, Khaled Said, was widely seen as Egypt’s version of Mohammed Bouazizi — the fruit seller whose self-im-

Last year’s killing of the 28-year-old Said was a wake-up call for many Egyptians who complained about unchecked excessive force by police. Pictures of Said's bloodied face, broken jaw and bruised body were widely circulated and became a rallying point for activists campaigning against widespread intimidation and killings by police in the Mubarak era. Hiding out in desert Moammar Gadhafi’s intelligence chief, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court, has slipped into the desert nation of Niger and is hiding in the expanse of dunes at the Niger-Algeria border, a Niger presidential adviser said late yesterday. Abdullah al-Senoussi entered Niger several days ago in a convoy piloted by Tuaregs, the traditional desert dwellers who remained fiercely loyal to Gadhafi until the end, the adviser, who could not be

named because of the sensitivity of the matter, told The Associated Press by telephone from Niger. Al-Senoussi, Gadhafi’s long serving intelligence chief, long played a key role in maintaining Gadhafi’s control in Libya. A much less public presence than flamboyant Gadhafi, al-Senoussi is believed to have been the mind behind the most brutal crackdowns on perceived threats to the regime. The Niger official — an influential leader of the

Tuareg community — said he is in touch with Tuaregs that are in contact with the convoy. AlSenoussi is one of two surviving members of the Gadhafi regime that are the subjects of international arrest warrants. The second is Gadhafi’s son and heir apparent Seif alIslam, whom the official said is also in the area, but is still in the triangle of sand just north of the Niger border, between Libya and Algeria. ACTIVISTS SAY TAREK FAWZY/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Two policemen get 7 years for beating death that sparked Egyptian uprising The lawyer of a young Egyptian man whose killing inspired the country’s uprising says a court has convicted two policemen of beating him to death and sentenced them to seven years in prison. Khaled Said’s family and witnesses accuse police of torturing and beating Said to death after an argument at an Alexandria Internet cafe in June 2010. Photos showed his body badly disfigured and

his face bloodied. Police claimed the 28year-old choked on a packet of drugs he swallowed as they approached, a finding contested in recent forensic reports that showed the packet was forced into his mouth. Lawyer Hafiz Abu-Saada says the court convicted the two yesterday of manslaughter, rejecting the more serious charge of murder. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The dark world of Mexico’s cops Policing in Monterrey, Mexico, has become risky business This year so far, 100 officers have been killed Metro delves into the world of Mexico’s law enforcers and spends a day with them to learn how they work JESÚS PADILLA/METRO WORLD NEWS

METRO WORLD NEWS IN MONTERREY, MEXICO

Being a cop in Monterrey is considered a high-risk profession. The police in the capital of Mexico’s northeastern state of Nuevo León receive constant death threats from druggang members and then do battle with them on the streets. Some extort money from citizens to make up for their meagre wages. Others receive payments from traffickers and become a halcón, or hawk, a kind of cartel informant. If a cop doesn’t comply with warring narcotic cartels, he’ll be targeted and removed. So far this year, 100 law enforcers have been killed either by gunfire or grenade explosions. At 7 p.m., we join a squadron in a local police station in downtown Monterrey. The team of three men and a woman begin patrolling Vista Hermosa, the Jewish quarter of the city until 7 a.m. At the doors to a convenience store, the guards stand on duty while eating some snacks. They carry highcalibre weapons and are protected by bulletproof vests. They drive an amped-up pickup truck. Drinking on the street, grand and petty theft, damage to personal and commercial property and carrying weapons are the most common crimes in

Field notes

A NIGHT IN THE CELLS

Being a police officer is a dangerous profession in Mexico, as cops receive constant death threats from drug-gang members. Inset: Attacks on police are now commonplace.

“I’d like to see a militarization of the police force. It’s time to allow the army to patrol the streets of our cities” ERVEY CUELLAR, MEMBER OF THE CITIZEN’S COUNCIL FOR PUBLIC SECURITY FOR THE STATE OF NUEVO LEÓN

one night. On a quiet night, this station receives up to seven complaints of grand theft auto.

Back at the convenience store, we notice that the law enforcement officials are calm and chat among themselves. And yet, clientele to the convenience store look restless and agitated by the presence of the police, undoubtedly due to the bad image they have earned over the years, either because they are easy targets for criminals to shoot at, or because they are easy pawns for drug traffickers to exploit and use.

Last February, Homero Guillermo Salcido Treviño, head of intelligence for Nuevo León state, was found dead, his body in a

truck that caught fire in the centre of Monterrey — after he was kidnapped by two fellow officers. “The worst thing is you do not know which of your colleagues is selling you out to the bad guys,” said one of Treviño’s relatives. In truth, it appears what comes out of your pocket could be the real difference between life or death, as we found out in our night in the police station’s jail cells.

From the first minute I knew I was going into the local police station in downtown Monterrey my nerves went wild. By the back entrance, prisoners arrive, mostly for minor offences or positive alcohol tests. Out of a group of two men and one woman, all of whom seem to be friends, one man is free to go. The 30-something was told his friends could be set free if they each paid $150. Beside the front door of the police station is an ATM from where he could get the money. The man goes down to the basement with police officers. There, another officer asks for an increase in payment to speed up the release of his friends. An Indian artist gives finishing touches to a Rangoli depicting late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in Mumbai. Rangoli is the art of arranging finely ground coloured powders.

Jobs biographer ‘just listened’ Apple boss a complex man Even though he was focused on his work, Jobs was always home for dinner Steve Jobs told Walter Isaacson he wanted him to write his biography because he’s good at getting people to talk. Jobs, it turns out, didn’t need much prodding, secretive as he was about both his private life and the company he founded. “I just listened,” said Isaacson, whose book, Steve Jobs (Simon & Schuster), went on sale Monday. Jobs, who died Oct. 5 at the age of 56 after a long struggle with pancreatic cancer, was a man full of deep con-

tradictions, a product of 1960s counterculture who went on to found what is now the world’s most valuable technology company, Apple Inc. Isaacson said Jobs was a compelling storyteller with “fascinating stories.” Sometimes, the author would hear him tell those tales two or three times, often with slight variations. But through more than 40 conversations with Jobs, as well as interviews with his family, close friends, co-workers

and rivals, Isaacson painted a rich portrait of a complex, sometimes conflicting figure. Those who see Jobs as the iconic CEO first might be surprised to read about his devotion to his family. Isaacson said he was most surprised by the intensity of Jobs’ emotions. “Years passed, kids came, good times, hard times, but never bad times,” Jobs once wrote to his wife. “Our love and respect has endured and grown.” THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Man thought to be victim of serial killer had left home because he didn’t get along with father, stepmom Siblings who feared their brother was one of serial killer John Wayne Gacy’s eight unidentified victims were amazed and overjoyed to learn that he’s been living in Florida for decades. Tim Lovell and Theresa Hasselberg hadn’t seen their brother, Harold Wayne Lovell, since he left their family’s Chicago home in May 1977 in search of construction work. At the time, Gacy was trolling for young men and boys in the area. He was a contractor, and he lured many of the 33 young men and boys he killed by offering them work. Detectives discovered

that eight of the 33 people Gacy was convicted of murdering never were identified, and they obtained exhumation orders over the past few months to test the remains for DNA, hoping relatives of young men who went missing in the area in the 1970s might

submit to genetic testing. Lovell’s siblings, who now live in Alabama, were planning to do that when they discovered a recent online police booking photo of their brother taken in Florida. They reached their brother, who goes by his middle name, by phone and bought him a bus ticket, and the family was reunited on Tuesday for the first time in 34 years. Wayne Lovell, now 53, described the reunion as “awesome.” Over the years, he’s worked manual labour jobs and has had occasional brushes with the law, including charges for buying marijuana. Scientists in California and Sweden have solved a 250-year-old mystery — a coded manuscript written by a secret society. The University of Southern California announced on Tuesday that researchers had broken the Copiale Cipher — the writing used in a 105-page 18th century document from Germany. Kevin Knight, of USC, and Beata Megyesi and Christiane Schaefer, of Uppsala University, did the work. They used a computer program to decipher part of the manuscript, which was found in East Berlin after the Cold War. The book, written in symbols and Roman letters, detailed rituals of a society that was fascinated by ophthalmology and eye surgery. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Thinking the unthinkable Upstart looks to upset Facebook’s status as sole ruler of social media

The Unthink personal user suite launched yesterday.

Unthink wants to overthrow Facebook’s rule over the social media realm. Born out of a mother’s concern over how her son appears to the online world, Unthink preaches empowerment. When potential users visit the site for more information, they are presented with a manifesto that exhorts them to take control of their online destinies. “We are not another so-

cial network. We are a Social Revolution,” declares the website. This sounds a lot like a social media counterpart of the Occupy movement. But, instead of wanting to shake up banking and big business, this site wants to shake up how businesses use the data generated by people in the online world. The current rule of thumb on the web says that, if an app or a service

is free, the user is the real product. Internet shopping, listening and reading habits are worth big money to advertisers and marketers — and that’s where Facebook, Twitter and Google+ get their revenue from. Funded with a modest $2.5 million US startup loan, Florida-based Unthink gives its users the option of signing up for free, then choosing a brand

with which they would like to have a relationship — the process is called iEndorse. If users want to remain brand-free, the site charges $2 a year for its services. Within a couple of hours of opening itself up for new members yesterday morning, Unthink was overwhelmed by interest, temporarily shutting down the website. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Nokia Corp. yesterday unveiled its first Windows cellphones, in a bid to recapture lost ground to chief rivals in the tough top-end smartphone market. Nokia’s Lumia 800, priced at $580 US, and Lumia 710, are the Finnish cellphone maker’s first models based on Microsoft Corp.’s Windows software after the two companies announced they would team up in February. The company also introduced four other smartphone models aimed at emerging markets. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said the Lumia 800,

with Carl Zeiss optics and 16GB of internal memory, will be available in some European countries in November. It shipped in Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan before the year-end. The Lumia 710, with a 1.4 GHz processor, navigational applications and Nokia Music — a free, mobile musicstreaming app — will first be available in Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan toward the end of the year. Nokia, which claims 1.3 billion daily users, has steadily been losing the smartphone race as it is squeezed in the low end by Asian manufacturers like ZTE and in the high end by Apple Inc.’s iPhone, Research in Motion’s BlackBerry and Google’s Android devices. CONFESSION: I HAVE A THING FOR THE GOP The U.S. has been a beacon for millions of people, but I’m probably the only person who’s ever wanted to head JOHN MAZEROLLE there because of Republican METRO presidential debates. Yes, America’s Grand Old Party is calling and I’m starting to listen. Now before you have me maplesyruped and feathered, let me be clear: I love Canada. Anne Murray’s as sexy as ever, peameal bacon wrapped in dulse and washed down with Clamato still hits the spot, and hearing the opening strains of “I’m a lumberjack and I’m OK” always brings a tear to the eye. It’s just that I find the Republicans — and the heartland that supports them — deeply alluring because, well, because they seem kind of nuts. It’s a way-out foreign culture, every bit as exotic as those far-flung reaches of the globe I clamour to visit. Canadians have a tendency to think of our southern neighbours as merely heavier, prouder, louder “So though my versions of ourselves — gut reaction is to sort of Canucks dialed up to 11. But the Republican roll my eyes or presidential debates worse, I instead remind me how wrong want to learn the that is. Usually, American TV ways of this misleads us, since it’s bizarre culture.” made by liberal places that most urban Canadians find easy to swallow, like New York and Hollywood. Watching the American TV programs I did growing up, I believed that any young American tadpole (The Muppet Show) can admit to being gay (Ellen) but continue movin’ on up (The Jeffersons) until he can afford a New York loft apartment that would cost more than the Iraq invasion (Friends). On most American TV, the U.S. seems like Canada with better temperatures and thinner people. But the Republican debates show me a culture so different I barely comprehend it. People applaud the mention of the death penalty. Nobody seems to know what taxes are for. Rick Santorum is seen as a normal person. This is a place I want to learn about. If this were any other continent, I’d be deeply interested. I’d want to understand. So though my gut reaction is to roll my eyes or worse, I instead want to learn the ways of this bizarre culture. I want to see heartland America — more Jerry Falwell, less Jerry Seinfeld. More Bible Belt, which holds up the britches of the nation. Less San Francisco, where pants are optional. This will require research, so I plan to watch a lot of bad television, eat free-range beef and drink beer, as befits my current, close-minded understanding of heartland America. Come to think of it, I’ve been researching to be an American all my life. I’m gonna melt right in.

For television and film stars, nothing is quite as stifling than being type cast, playing the same kind of character over and over again. But for stage actors, the success of a production forces an actor to play the exact same character night after night, often for years. So is the case for Ted Dykstra and Richard Greenblat, whose show 2 Pianos 4 Hands returns to Toronto this week. The pair created the musical comedy 15 years ago, inspired by their experiences growing up as classical piano prodigies. By their own estimation, they have performed about 750 times. “It’s unusual that you

get to perform a show for that long,” says Greenblat. They retired the show from regular production in 1999 and subsequently remounted in 2003 and again for their current run here in Toronto. “There’s nothing you can do to recreate a success like that,” he says. “You have to keep on doing your stuff and sometimes it hits like this and sometimes it doesn’t” Sahr Ngaujah finds him-

self in a similar predicament. Ngaujah has been in the title role of Fela! since the biopic of Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer and political agitator Fela Kuti debuted off-Broadway three years ago. It made its Toronto debut on Tuesday. “(It) is kind of an organic stretch of the material from Broadway to other parts of the world,” he says. Of course no one’s com-

plaining — in the feast or famine world of theatre, a regular gig is something any actor aspires to. And in the case of Dykstra and Greenblat, they control when and where 2 Pianos 4 Hands appears since they created it. “I wouldn’t be doing it if I didn’t want to,” says Dykstra. Despite being involved with Fela! since its inception, Ngaujah doesn’t have the same control over the

production. He was spotted by the show’s choreographer at an audition years ago and brought in to help shape the title role. But at the end of the day, the show can go on without him, something he seems comfortable with. “It feels like the kind of piece that really means something to people,” he says. “I think it’s nice that it’s happening, but people won’t see me onstage in the role forever.”

It may have taken some time, but Kelly Clarkson seems to finally be releasing an album without any drama on the side. “Everything is good, everything is happy,” she said, laughing brightly during a recent interview to promote Stronger, which was released this week. It’s a different scenario than her last two albums: She went through public disputes with legendary executive and mogul Clive Davis over her third album and with OneRepublic singer-songwriter Ryan Tedder after her last album was released. They were typical of the bold stances she’s taken that proved her to be more than the passive, malleable product of a hit TV competi-

“If you look at my whole catalogue, there are far more sadder songs than happy.” KELLY CLARKSON

tion, establishing her as an artist instead of just a voice. “I’ve been a fighter since I started walking,” she said, adding casually and genuinely a line that could be lifted from one of her inspirational songs: “We get one life. You want to make sure that you’re living it how you want to live it.” Since Clarkson became the first American Idol a decade ago, she’s established herself as one of pop’s most formidable, and successful singers. She’s

sold more than 20 million albums worldwide and landed seven singles in the Billboard Hot 100 top 10, including Breakaway, My Life Would Suck Without You, Miss Independent, and perhaps her biggest hit, Since U Been Gone. Clarkson has maintained creative control of her music and career since her Idol days, and has written on all of her albums. But her determination to chart her own course has not come without a few battles. In 2007, Davis became concerned over the less commercial sound of Clarkson’s third album, My December, which Clarkson revealed publicly after rumours of a rift; Clarkson later mended fences and called the tension overblown. Then in

2009, Clarkson called out Tedder for musical similarities between Already Gone, which he wrote for Clarkson, and Beyoncé’s Halo, which he also wrote. Clarkson calls her new collection of 13 songs “the easiest record that I’ve made with my label.” But she makes clear that’s because the suits bent to her will — not the other way around. “I think people project on you like the formula that has worked in the past. And then they get to know you,” she said. “(Now) they know me better as an artist, they know me better as a person. They know what I’m going to do and what I don’t like, and it just really works.”

Arkells courting a wider audience Hamilton band’s second album, Michigan Left, packs a punch — in 35 minutes Brevity was by design After converting years of relentless touring into a Juno win and a major-label record deal, the Arkells have finally won the opportunity to introduce themselves to a much wider audience. And they were careful not to overstay their welcome. Sophomore record Michigan Left breezes by in just over 35 minutes, a disc of tuneful guitar rock songs that aim to pack the sugary jolt of a Pixy stix. Only the yearning night-crawler Coffee clocks in over four minutes, and the Hamilton band says that brevity was, well, carefully calculated. “It’s our second record — we thought people were only going to give it so much time,” said guitarist Mike DeAngelis in an interview this week in Toronto. “So we might as well hit them, you know?” Since releasing their debut disc Jackson Square in 2008, Arkells have earned a reputation for their fiery live show and melodic rock, which was both sufficiently stylish for discerning indie rockers and tuneful enough to wrest radio play. But following the Juno

win for new group of the year and the subsequent deal with Universal, the band faced heightened expectations for a follow-up that had been in the works for three years. The primary hurdle? Attempting to capture the energy of their well-received live performances on disc. “It’s definitely a challenge for us,” said frontman Max Kerman. “Live, we’re able to get better at it by doing it a lot — you’re on the road and you play for a month straight, and you oughta be better at it. “Recording (is) a whole different ballgame because figuring out how to capture your sound is pretty difficult, and you don’t always know what you’re going for and it’s a learning experience.” THE CANADIAN PRESS

New episodes of Pop Up Video will hit Canadian airwaves next week after a decade-long hiatus, and creator Woody Thompson says there’s one artist he was particularly keen to tackle. “I think Lady Gaga has had a big impact on people being interested in music videos again,” Thompson said in a recent telephone interview from Los Angeles. “The last two years, three years, Lady Gaga has actually created some interest in the genre again.” Thompson’s enthusiasm is clear as he talks about the return of Pop Up Video, which he created with Tad Low in 1996. Known for its unique brand of trivia and snark, the show featured hit videos adorned with comic book-like bubbles containing obscure factoids

Lady Gaga

about the making of the clips and the musicians who starred in them. The creative format proved a winning one: Pop Up Video aired 209 episodes from 1996-2002. By the end of its run, however, the Internet was beginning to drastically change the way music was consumed. Instantly available online, music videos

— such a huge TV draw in the ’80s — were no longer destination viewing. Some artists began to tailor their videos for computer screens, while many music TV stations shifted their focus. But when VH1 called Thompson about new episodes, the Gaga factor, plus 10 years of unpopped videos, proved too tempting to resist. Thompson — who has produced various other shows during his time away from Pop Up Video — says he’s been gratified by viewer response in the United States, where new episodes are already airing. “There have been a lot of nostalgic people who knew what it was who are commenting that they’ve kind of been put back in this place 10 years ago,” he said. “(People) get put into

Social media For social media-savvy viewers, Thompson has added interactive elements to Pop Up Video, including an online feature that allows U.S. fans to “pop” their own videos. The tool is not yet available in Canada, but fans here can use other interactive components at the official Pop Up Video Facebook page.

Laughing for peace Seinfeld actor hopes comedy can help the Mideast GETTY IMAGES

Former Seinfeld actor Jason Alexander says he isn’t kidding around when it comes to promoting Mideast peace. Alexander, who played George Costanza in the legendary sitcom for a decade, was asked by Israeli President Shimon Peres in a meeting on Tuesday for advice on how to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Alexander said, that through comedy and humour, he hopes to help advance the idea of two states for two people. Peres playfully asked the actor if he could call him “George.” Alexander laughed, and pointing to a crowd of reporters, said: “You can. Not them.” He met with Peres during a visit to the Holy Land with a delegation from

Ghosts, ghouls, vampires, zombies and creatures of all sorts have overtaken the small screen — and they’re no longer just relegated to specialty digital channels, says genre expert Teddy Wilson of Space’s flagship entertainment show InnerSPACE. He points to the CBS/Global supernatural medical drama A Gifted Man, in which a surgeon is visited by the spirit of his dead wife, and NBC/CTV’s Grimm, in which a detective discovers mythological creatures living among us in disguise, as among the creepy shows targeting a broad audience. Salma Hayek knew she had one major problem coming her way after taking on a role in Puss in Boots, given its appeal to children: explaining to her four-yearold daughter, Valentina, that cartoon characters are actually voiced by human actors. “I was worried about that because it’s like the Santa thing in a way. Because she really thinks there are cats there,” Hayek explains. “I thought I had some time, but I took her to see a movie and in the previews I see Puss in Boots,” the actress remembers. “I had two seconds to break it to her. Before I could saying anything, my character came on screen and she said, ‘Oh my gosh mommy, that cat sounds just like you.’ I said, ‘It is me.’ I had to explain to her that it’s not real. It’s drawings. I think she was a little upset, maybe a little confused. Now, she loves it. She’s so proud of me.” In the film, Hayek voices Kitty Softpaws, both a romantic interest and professional rival for Antonio Banderas’ titular feline. But Hayek didn’t have a lot of time to get into character as Kitty. “I didn’t prepare. I never got to see the script. Chris never showed me the script,” she says of director Chris Miller.

Latin power While the distinct voices of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek may pack entertainment value, Banderas also believes having the pair top-line a mainstream animated film is something of a milestone. “When I first came to America 21 years ago, I did the Mambo Kings and somebody on the set said to me, ‘If you are going to

“I just showed up blind.” Instead of presenting concept drawings or script pages, Miller would explain the scenes and stories to Hayek, helping her conceptualize the feline-fueled adventure. And while working in a recording studio would usually cut down on the kinds of thrills an actress would find on a live-action set, the Puss in Boots recording sessions weren’t without their perils, it turns out. “One day in, recording in who knows what scene in the studio and a wall came down on us,” she remembers, describing a session with Miller. “We are alive by a miracle. How it missed both of us, we still don’t understand.” Life-threatening mishaps or not, Hayek is happy to have taken the leap into animation, particularly because it brings her all new fans — or at least that’s the aim. “I sure hope so because I’m too old,” she says with a laugh. “The ones who have followed me are getting older with me and they don’t want to go to the movies anymore. So, I need a new generation or else I die.” stay here, basically you are going to play bad characters. You are going to be the bad guy in the movies,’” Banderas remembers. “In the 21 years, things have changed very much. This movie is going to be seen by kids who actually don’t judge in those terms. They are going to see the movie and see that the heroes are strong accent and that is good.”

A follow-up to the bestselling 100 Photos That Changed Canada, also edited by Reid, the book outlines the trials, tribulations, and celebrations of 144 years in Canadian history. How does the Versace for H&M ‘greatest hits’ collection stack up against the real thing? Metro’s Kenya Hunt compares the high street clothes, which are based on the luxury brand’s past collections, with the expensive originals.

The archives for less

When you consider that they all tend to follow the same formula, it’s hard to believe that collaborations between famous designers and mass market brands

can still generate the level of excitement that Donatella Versace’s new collection for H&M has. Each launch, without fail, comes with the shiny

‘Greatest hits!’ label attached. But let’s be honest; shoppers want dresses that scream designer, not chintzy knockoff — as in,

CATWALKING

CATWALKING

“Are people staring at me because they think this is the real thing or because my skirt looks flammable?” Frankly, there haven’t been a whole lot of high-low col-

laborations that have struck the right balance. So with that in mind, we compare H&M’s latest with a few standouts from the Versace archives.

CATWALKING

CATWALKING

The grade

1

This dress, which is straight from the SS’12 show, has that “just off the runway” feeling. The H&M version may not have the leather strips and asymmetry that the catwalk dress does, but it impressively nails the maximal, studded to the Gods look of the original.

2

39

metronews.ca

Donatella replaces the original’s Greek key pattern — a trademark of the Versace house that appears on other items in the H&M collection — with graphic hearts. The patterned fringing and cut-out shoulders are just right.

3

These tropical trousers will make a colourful alternative to the festive cocktail dress for your office holiday party. That said, the H&M incarnation outVersace’s the Versace pants in loudness, even if they are missing the little baroque patterned trim at the hem.

4

On paper, the two are nearly identical. The flashy buckle and gilt waistband are there. But the H&M belt may turn silver after a few too many wears.

As far as greatest hits collections go, the H&M line feels more like new Versace than old. But it does a great job of recreating the brand’s money-is-noobject look by steering clear of fancy fabrics that are impossible to re-do on the cheap and sticking with the fun details that make the garments stand out in the first place. That said, maybe just steer clear of the gold accessories.

“If you can drive a car, you can drive this, says Maya Valladares as I press the sewing machine pedal to the floor and complete my first stitch. After years of having holes in my pants pockets, I am finally learning to fix one. The process is more complicated than I suspected: Carefully cutting through three layers of stitches to remove the pocket lining requires the precision and patience of a surgeon. When I finally get the lining out, Valladares puts her palm underneath it and says, “See? You can see my hand through it — cheap cotton, shredded to pieces. But that's no reason to buy new pants. She worked for 15 years for a small bridal house in Lancaster, Pa., before losing her job during an economic slump. “I was assistant designer, production manager, I hired the models. I did it all. In Brooklyn, it provided use of sewing machines, needles and thread, and offered instruction and almost infinite patience for beginners. Run by a dyeing instructor at the Textile Arts Center, it even provided the onions, rusty nails, wine and chai tea used as natural dyes. Valladares herself hasn't bought any new clothes in more than two years. “A guilty energy develops — you stop buying because of the waste, and you can't go back to the way you were, she says. But is it for men? I'm the only male among 12 women in this New York group. “I can't believe it, says Valladares as she reshapes my pocket. “A roomful of women? And guys aren't interested? Maybe if sewing were pitched to men as rugged survivalism, it might attract more interest. “Definitely, if men could see it that way, they would show up, says Valladares. “They should see it as a survival tool. Sewing Rebellion was created by Carole LungBazile of Los Angeles to, well, sow rebellion against consumerism with the slogan “Use it up! CHRISTOPHER KANE: YOU CAN’T TOUCH THIS CONTRIBUTED

KENYA HUNT

LIFE@METRONEWS.CA METRO WORLD NEWS IN LONDON

Christopher Kane considers his work to be an extension of himself. But at first glance, he’s shockingly different from his audacious clothes. As one of London’s best new talents, the Scotsman by birth has earned comparisons to Alexander McQueen for his unbridled creativity.

could earn a living as a designer there was never any other alternative. I became obsessed with fashion [shows] on TV at a young age, I religiously recorded every one so I would never forget my favourite shows.

Do you ever feel a certain pressure to create ‘the new’ each season?

I can’t think of any other designer who has owned neon the way you have. What is it about the fluorescent colours that grab you?

Have you always wanted to be a designer? When you were growing up, what was the least fashion-related career goal you’ve ever had?

I can’t explain it but I just love how it looks. My most memorable memories of neon would be of workmen or my lollipop woman at school in her reflective suit. It always intrigued me.

I’ve always wanted to work in fashion for as long as I can remember. The moment I realized that you

I try to put the pressure to one side and focus on what my instincts tell me are the right thing to do. Pressure keeps my focus on the goal of producing a unique collection every season. There’s no room for doubt before a show. Every buyer and critic is different and they all have their own opinions. My show expresses my opinion and my love for clothing and as long as I feel proud after each show then I’m happy. As someone who balances two design jobs, do you agree when some critics say that the expectations of fashion designers are too high in terms of work load and the

fashion calendar?

The expectation is high but I could not imagine doing anything else. I am thankful that I am able to do a job that I love. How do you mentally switch gears from working on your own line to working on Versus for Donatella Versace?

Versus has such a rich

archive that I can easily get lost in and of course having Donatella as my boss helps. What is it like working for her?

She’s truly the most inspiring boss I could have ever hoped for. I am constantly learning from her and having a laugh along the way.

THE ORANGE BOX GOES DIGITAL OCTOBER 31 IS NATIONAL UNICEF DAY For most of us, the orange UNICEF box was a symbol of Halloween, right alongside loot bags, make-up and vampire teeth. The campaign behind it, ‘Trickor-Treat for UNICEF,’ raised more than $100 million since it began in Canada in 1955, helping children around the world to live and learn better. Today, there are still millions of children in need, and UNICEF is helping them in new ways. October 31, National UNICEF Day, is now the culmination of a month-long fundraising program, open to anyone who wishes to donate, no matter where you live. The orange box is now virtual. With one visit to www.unicef.ca/oct31, you can make a secure donation in seconds. And as a special thank you to Canadians, you can also enter to win a $5,000 travel voucher, courtesy of Intrepid Travel. More than ever, your donation matters. Around the world, 68 million primary-school-age children are out of school. UNICEF, supported entirely by voluntary donations, helps ensure that every child—regardless of gender, ethnicity, background or circumstances—receives a

quality education, free from discrimination. This is critical, not only for the children themselves, but for the families they help support. UNICEF seeks to raise $2 million for these kids between now and October 31—a sum that will help purchase educational supplies for 5 million students and would-be students. This money gets spent on things most of us take for granted, like workbooks, textbooks and other school supplies. Just 10 dollars can provide pencils and exercise books for 20 students, so children can write and draw. A little less

than 90 dollars buys a child a bicycle, allowing him or her to get to school faster—or fetch clean water. Education is more than a universal right for these kids. It’s a tool that helps them break cycles of poverty, disease and social inequity. It empowers them to become the global citizens they’re destined to be. By donating online, you join thousands of other Canadians in continuing the tradition of the little orange box. Only now, you can do it quicker and more securely, any day of the week, from wherever you are.

BAYAN YAMMOUT SPENT 17 YEARS IN THE MIDST OF CONFLICT Born in Beirut, Lebanon, during her country’s civil war, Bayan learned first-hand the suffering children face in these situations. She lived in bomb shelters, searched for water—even lost family members in the fighting. But today, Bayan is a school teacher in Canada. She has a husband and children of her own, and speaks four languages. Between the horror of war and the peace she now enjoys, she found hope. UNICEF helped her do it. “Life is confusing for a child in a conflict-zone,” Bayan recalls. “You might share a shelter with up to one hundred people, for weeks at a time. Your wish is that, one day, you can sleep safely in your own bed.” “One day UNICEF gave us paper and pencils. I remember sitting with them, drawing for hours. These were tools for our education, but through them, I could finally express how I felt.” Her struggles long behind her, Bayan now works proudly with UNICEF Canada, sharing her story and helping others see the value of education, here and abroad.

hen I was appointed as BILD Chair earlier this year, I made it my mission to reach out to all sectors of the membership and make sure that each group has an equal opportunity to addresses their issues to their association. As I made my inaugural address back in January, I looked around the room and noticed a lack of diversity in the demographic within the audience. There were barely any young members present, which became a concern to me as I began noticing a similar trend at subsequent events. Younger members seemed less connected

with their older colleagues, and were often left uninformed about industry events. I wanted to reach out to this group to make sure their voices and ideas are expressed, without fear or intimidation from their older, more established colleagues. This is how the Young BILDers Committee was born. This Committee is a vehicle to bring together younger members of the industry across the membership to focus on issues important to young BILD leaders. Its purpose is to better engage them in all aspects of Association activity, and to promote the benefits of being involved. The Executive, led by cochairs Sebastian Mizzi of Signature Developments and Fabrizio Cortellucci of Zancor Homes, consists of a group of young leaders under 40 years old who have volunteered their time to this initiative. The group will be focussing on building a main

roster of under-40 members who seek to enhance their participation in the Association by providing not only networking opportunities, but also educational seminars and mentoring partnerships. The younger side of our membership likes to be entertained but it is also hungry to learn, so I expect our educational events to be even more popular than the social ones. You can go out and have fun any weekend, but how often do you get a chance to attend a session specifically tailored for you to succeed and progress in your career? The industry is changing, so we knew it was time for a fresh, new outlook on things. You, the homebuyers, will be glad we did! PAUL GOLINI JR. There’s a new marketing trend underway that uses scents when staging and decorating condominiums and homes for sale. A professional per-

fumer by trade, Tracy Pepe has been scenting for about 20 years. “From department stores to retail to even homeowners, when you think of how large the home scenting category is, with candles and Febreze and plug-ins, it’s

$3 billion.” Scents have been used as a sales tool for some time. Pepe explains that, “They started off in the Las Vegas area with hotels and casinos and showrooms. It’s still new in a lot of ways, but it’s a lot more common than peoROBIN SIEGERMAN

ple really think.” The Scent Design Solution will be at the Home Show to demonstrate how scent can produce powerful and memorable environments in your home. “I will work from the premise of scent design, so I actually help design space and I work with the colours, I work with the textures, I work with the moods, because with certain smells we know how to create an environment that’s comfortable,” says Pepe. NAVIGATING THE PITFALLS OF PRIVATE SALES LEGAL MATTERS JEFFREY COWAN HOME @METRONEWS.CA

Q: I have been attempting to sell my house privately and had an offer on the property that was

conditional on the purchaser obtaining financing. She had seven days to waive (agree to) the condition in writing or the deal was dead. By the seventh day, I had not heard from her so I assumed the transaction was finished and I went about finding another buyer. Little did I know that the initial buyer had tried to contact me with the written waiver and when she found

out I was entertaining another buyer, she hired a lawyer to write me a letter stating that we had a ‘deal’ and I had better ‘govern myself accordingly’. I am a little unsure of how to proceed and wonder if you could give some advice?

A: The first thing you should do is contact a lawyer to explain the situation to them. On first

glance, it seems as though you were correct in assuming that the transaction was at an end as the buyer missed the written notice period for a waiver. However, this can be a very complex situation and you should not be forging ahead without some solid advice from either a lawyer, or a realtor. I realize that an ever increasing number of vendors approach the sale of

their home without the assistance of a realtor. Many of them regret this initial tactic because what they are lacking is the front line experience and advocacy that a realtor can put forward on your behalf in the case of something going wrong. Certainly, supported by a real estate agent, you would have understood upfront that the deal was good to go or dead.

Up against a lawyer’s demand letter, you have no choice but to engage another lawyer on your behalf. They can give you guidance, which will hopefully lead to a happy outcome but this could have been avoided entirely. JEFFREY COWAN IS THE PRINCIPAL OF COWAN LAW AND CAN BE REACHED BY EMAIL AT JEFF@COWANLAW.CA.

Fall for sophisticated pops of colour

Spicy autumn colours are all the trend

Add small kicks of deep purple, brick red, rich pinks or burnt orange WEST ELM

DESIGN CENTRE KARL LOHNES HOME@ METRONEWS.CA

As we prepare to welcome fall into our homes, we can officially leave the light, breezy tones of summer behind and turn to the deeper shades of the upcoming winter season. The classic colours associated with autumn are burnt oranges, brick reds, dark plums and deep cranberries. Bright, crisp colours feel less fashionable now and the colours of fall are dramatic, strong and exotically sophisticated. Some may recognize these trendy tones as those that defined decor of the ’70s and ’80s (remember rust corduroy sofas and E-ZBrick faux walls?) but what goes around rarely comes back the same way. Deep reds and rusty oranges have reappeared in more formal textures like silk, rather than the casual

Warm greys and cool taupes are still the ultimate neutral, but pops of spiced colour on a focal point or accessory are fun ways to bring in colour without a major commitment. Adding small kicks of deep purple, brick red, rich pinks or dark orange to an accent wall, patterned pillow, glass lamp, or two side chairs in a living room can make a big impact with the trends. Make a wine crate display case Turn your drinking habit into home decor fun Create shelving for favourite books, knick-knacks

DIY IDEAS No matter what size our home is, most of us are always in need of more storage space. Rather than covering up more precious counterspace, Design Sponge contributors Derek Fagerstrom and Lauren Smith decided to add wall shelves made from recycled wine crates they found at their local wine shop. To add more detail, Lauren and Derek lined the back of the shelves with colourful, inexpensive gift wrap to act as a backdrop for their favourite books and tiny treasures.

Steps 1. Use a tape measure to measure the interior of each crate to make sure you have enough fancy paper to line all of them. 2. Next, draw out the measurements in pencil on the back of the paper. In order to avoid any potential gaps along the interior edges, add a one-inch allowance as follows. Long sides: Add one inch to each of the three edges that border the interior of the box. Short sides: Add one inch to the edge that borders the back of the box. Back piece: No allowance. 3. Using a straightedge and an X-ACTO knife, carefully cut out each piece of lining

paper (five per box). Create fold lines by scoring along the one-inch allowance with a bone folder. Finally, miter each of the interior corners at the allowance by cutting a 45-degree angle from the outside edge in. 4. In a well-ventilated area, apply spray adhesive to the back of each of your long pieces. Place them carefully inside the box, lining up the folded edges with the inside edges of the box, and smoothing out any air bubbles that may appear in the paper. Next, spray and apply the short pieces. At this point, all four sides of the box will be lined, and the back will have a one-inch

PH neutral Soap such as Johnson’s Baby Shampoo, a small container in your toiletries bag is a big help. Remember PH neutral soap is great on grease stains. So how does all of this relate to travel? Remember the number one laundry rule: before you launder any garment you must check the label and get the stain out before washing. By pre-treating stains, you can hand over your garment to the hotel laundry department with little worry. Now some of you may wonder why not just let the hotel worry about the stain — my answer to that is if I am far away from home, and have a favourite clothing item, I don’t want to entrust it to someone I don’t know. Therefore I pre-treat the stain once I hand over the garment to the hotel and I don’t have to worry about their stain removal abilities. Now for another question:

Dear Charles the butler, A few questions related to the care of shoes: - Do you remove the laces when you polish them? - Do you have any special tips for how to apply polish, shine, and buff? - How do you re-lace the shoes? Thanks in advance, Tongue Tied

Dear Tongue Tied, As you may already know, gentlemen in particular are often judged by the way they care for their shoes. This is an essential part of a man’s wardrobe that should never be overlooked. 1. Always remove shoelaces before you polish your shoes, otherwise you will get polish on the laces, and this in turn gets on your hands when you tie your shoelaces. 2. Hard paste is the most common type of polish, and should be applied with a clean, dry rag. Use very little polish as you can always add more, and too much polish makes buffing your shoes that much harder. 3. Shoes should always be re-laced as you found them. Today’s butlers take a picture of how they were laced and once the shoe has been polished will re-lace the shoes as before. Speaking of shoes, I’m off to walk the Great Wall of China and think about my next column. GOT A QUESTION? SEND AN EMAIL TO ASKCHARLESTHEBUTLER@METRONE WS.CA

Pick the right bed Troubled nights are not just for the guilty-minded Buying into a luxury bed could save you a lifetime of back pain and insomnia RICHARD PECKETT

LIFE@METRONEWS.CA METRO WORLD NEWS IN LONDON

“Right, I’m off to bed.” The question is, what exactly are you getting into? A luxurious Vi-Spring bed? Or perhaps a frightful, spongy creation that landlords lovingly provide for students? Thinking about beds may seem like a trivial thing, especially if you consider a pal’s sofa an ideal resting spot. However, as renowned London back specialist Noël Kingsley explains, “The lack of support from sleeping on poor mattresses can cause the spine to twist, shorten or even lead to lumbar back pain and the pinching of nerves in

the upper thoracic spine.” So, with those rather crippling comments in mind, let’s find out what lies beneath one’s slumbering self. Lucy Helmore, the buyer for beds and furniture at the world-famous department store Harrods, advises that the finest mattresses are packed with variable compositions of “horsetail hair, Shetland wool, bamboo, cotton, cashmere, latex and steel springs. Generally, I would avoid manmade materials because they’re not as breathable.” However, there is one exception and that’s the space-age memory foam mattress. But why the regal name? “Historically, the bedroom was where royals conducted business,” Helmore says. It’s rumoured that kings literally got into bed together to seal deals. Yes, the royals have always kept things cosy but they were right about one thing and that’s the importance of a bloody good bed.

•••••••• of the week More Canadian than a Mountie drinking maple syrup. The smoothness of our national whisky makes a great base for the spiciness of the cordial (Bottle Green makes an excellent one, or you could try your hand at making your own), and the notes of cinnamon and clove give this an unusual but exciting complexity. Garnish with some Atlantic cranberries, but remember to soak them in something sweet or their tartness will be too much for some.

A great after-dinner drink, this cocktail can take the place of coffee and dessert all at once. And it's definitely a classier move than ordering a vodka and Red Bull, if you need a pick-me-up but you're in polite company. Compensate for the shortening days by going with this caffeinated libation and seizing the night.

Texas Rangers pitcher Derek Holland yells across a covered infield at Busch Stadium in St. Louis yesterday, after officials announced that Game 6 of the World Series would be postponed due to rain.

THE RAPTORS NAMED ED STEFANSKI AS THE TEAM’S EXECUTIVE VICE-PRESIDENT OF BASKETBALL OPERATIONS YESTERDAY. STEFANSKI PREVIOUSLY WORKED IN THE FRONT OFFICE FOR BOTH THE PHILADELPHIA 76ERS AND THE NEW JERSEY NETS.

Colby Lewis and his Texas teammates casually tossed a ball in left field, trying to avoid the tarp and any anxiety about being so close to the World Series championship. On this day, the only winner was the weather. Game 6 was postponed yesterday because of an accurate wet forecast, delaying the Rangers’ bid to clinch their first championship. Ahead 3-2, they can close out the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night. It’s likely to be clear with temperatures around 12 C at Busch Stadium. “We’re not getting antsy, we’re not getting ahead of ourselves. We just have to wait,” Texas manager Ron Washington said.

At the time, no drops had fallen at the ballpark. “I’m not even sure why they cancelled it,” Cardinals outfielder Lance Berkman said. “This is better than the weather for Game 1. I guess I’m going to lie back on the couch like a big, fat pig and watch a movie.” Maybe Berkman could’ve joined La Russa. The Cardinals manager planned to go see Moneyball. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Banner year at box office for Jays Ticket revenues for the Toronto Blue Jays this season rose to the highest level since the baseball team won the World Series 18 years ago. Rogers Media president Keith Pelley says sales for the Jays’ games increased 16 per cent this year, while more sports fans also attended the games and watched them on TV. Pelley gives some of the credit to Rogers Communications, the parent company that owns the Jays and a batch of different media outlets, including TV channel Rogers Sportsnet. He says a strong integration between the divisions has helped TV viewership, which soared 17 per cent to an average of 507,000 viewers for the season. Attendance at the gate was also higher, up 12 per cent. Rogers does not disclose actual financial results for its divisions and declined to provide those details on the Jays. But according to figures from Major League Baseball, the team drew just over 1.8 million fans to Rogers Centre this past season, an average of 22,445 per home game. That ranked the Blue Jays 25th among the 30 big-league teams. In 2010, the Jays had an attendance of nearly 1.63 million. THE CANADIAN PRESS

Trip back to AHL may be looming for Kadri Return of Connolly, Bozak creates shortage of spots All it took was one look at the forward line combinations at Leafs practice in New York yesterday to lurch Nazem Kadri into an unwanted frenzy of speculation about his immediate future with the club. The Leafs will play the first hockey game against the Rangers in the newly renovated Madison Square Garden Thursday, but Kadri may not be part of that special moment. At least, appearances at practice suggested that much for the talented young winger. He lined up with the so called “extra” players in practice, and that triggered talk that he may be returned to the Marlies today. The Leafs must make some kind of roster move for tonight’s game, given

the return of injured forwards Tim Connolly and Tyler Bozak. The Leafs already had three too many forwards on board before the injuries. Now, something has to give. “Brian (GM Burke) and Dave (assistant GM Nonis) will be here tomorrow (Thursday) and we’ll pretty much wait until then before we make our decision,” Leafs coach Ron Wilson said. “We’ll exchange our in-

formation and decide what we need to do.” Kadri was in fact assigned to the Marlies last week for some tuneup games. He had recovered from a knee injury in the pre-season and needed a stint in the AHL to regain his game speed and conditioning. But injuries to Colby Armstrong and Bozak forced the Leafs to change Kadri’s minor league ticket within a day of assigning it. The crafty winger played well enough on the club’s third line, and even saw time with Phil Kessel and Joffrey Lupul. But strong play from rookies Matt Frattin and Jake Gardner may have left the Leafs no other choice but to return to their original decision on Kadri. TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE

Finally a reason to cheer?

DAVID DUPREY/THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Bills have winning record for first time ahead of Toronto series game Players hope crowd backs them after lacklustre play at Rogers Centre in past They’ve won four of their first six games and are one of the NFL’s early feel-good stories in 2011. Safety George Wilson hopes that translates into a decided home-field advantage Sunday when the upstart Buffalo Bills return to Toronto. Buffalo (4-2) faces the Washington Redskins (3-3) as part of the Bills in Toronto Series. Four years into the five-year agreement, the Bills are looking for their first regular-season victory in southern Ontario. Buffalo is 0-3 in regularseason games at Rogers Centre but has won two exhibition contests there. Washington comes in hav-

“You make plays. Giving them something to cheer about is how you get them in to it. BILLS QB RYAN FITZPATRICK ON WINNING OVER TORONTO FANS

ing lost two straight but safety O.J. Atogwe, a native of Windsor, will play in his first NFL game in Toronto. The game is Buffalo’s only appearance here this season before closing the series next year with exhibition and regular-season contests. “Hopefully with us being off to a good start it will create more of a buzz for the game, Wilson said Tuesday at the Breeders Crown draw in Vaughan, Ont. The contests in Toronto are listed as home games

for Buffalo. But the Rogers Centre atmosphere doesn’t compare to the ear-splitting support the Bills get at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Fans at Rogers Centre have been as boisterous in support of visiting teams as they have been for the Bills. And playing indoors has removed one of the biggest advantages the Buffalo squad has — the cold weather and swirling winds in Orchard Park, N.Y. “This is our home away from home but it still has the feel of a road game be-

cause we still have to get on the bus and take the 1 1⠄2two hour drive up, Wilson said. “In previous years we’ve seen just as many jerseys for the visiting teams as we saw for our team ... We’ve just got to make sure we’re the ones making the big plays so we can say all the cheers are for the Buffalo Bills. The Bills have given fans in Buffalo plenty to cheer about, currently sitting second in the AFC East behind New England (5-1). That’s in stark contrast to last year’s team, which was a dismal 0-7 when it hosted Chicago at Rogers Centre, losing 22-19.
