Fresh Meadow Country Club jumped out to a fast start in 2014 as head professional Matt Dobyns steered all three teammates to the top of the leaderboard. Matt and Keith Dicciani combined to shoot an 8 under par 63 to earn the top spot at the TaylorMade/adidas Long Island Pro Assistant’s Championship at Southward Ho Country Club. TaylorMade representative Brian Overbeck was on hand to congratulate the duo.
Similar to the happenings on Long Island, Sunningdale Country Club head professional Christopher Toulson led all three of his teams to the top of the leaderboard. His partnership with Mark Ledom resulted in an 8 under par 62 and the top spot on the podium at the TaylorMade/adidas Westchester Pro Assistant’s Championship at Brynwood Golf & Country Club.
Winged Foot’s Grant Sturgeon waded through an impressive list of Met PGA playing legends to capture his first Met Section trophy at the MasterCard Westchester PGA Championship hosted by Mount Kisco Country Club. Unknown to everyone at the time, Grant’s 2&1 victory over Christopher Toulson foreshadowed a historic year for the former Louisville Cardinal. Matt Dobyns, Fresh Meadow Country Club, put on quite the display at the POLO Golf Head Professional Championship. Matt posted nine birdies and only one bogey over 36 holes in cold, blistery conditions to earn a seven shot victory.

A winter of strong play saw Huntington Country Club’s Tim Puetz qualify for and play in the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open, his first appearance at golf’s highest level. His strong winter play carried over into the MasterCard Long Island PGA Championship at Muttontown Golf Club. Tim’s accurate driver and hot putter earned him a decisive 5&4 victory over defending champion and good friend Nick Beddow.
In his first full season on the senior circuit, Metropolis Country Club head professional Craig Thomas wasted no time finding the winner’s circle. Craig defeated Deepdale’s Darrell Kestner 2&1 to win the MasterCard Senior Match Play Championship at Willow Ridge Country Club. Host professional John Reeves was on hand to present Craig with the trophy.
The POLO Golf Senior Head Professional Championship turned out to be a bit closer. Siwanoy’s Grant Turner birdied the final hole to force a playoff with Greens at Half Hollow’s Shawn Baker. Grant eclipsed Shawn in that playoff to earn the victory. POLO Golf representatives Michael Shutte and Kate Bauer presented Grant with the winner’s trophy.
