when east meets west â€”The Hottest New Trend In Weddings

8...... Winter / Spring 2009

planning

A wedding is the fusion of two With the high number of interracial and intercultural marriages today, culturally blended celebrations have become a must-do for wedding planners. There are many cultural groups lives, and by demonstrating that are currently practicing multicultural wedding traditions, including Jewish-Korean, and Hindu-Catholic, just to name a few. Choosing the right mix of that in your ceremony you can Japanese-Protestant, religious, ethnic and traditional parts of the ceremony is a big part of planning. In the last fifteen years, the trend for multicultural weddings has expanded because people are much create a signature and less hesitant about interracial or interfaith marriages. People want to celebrate their different unparalleled celebration cultures and use their wedding as the first way to officially unite their heritages. When joining two individuals and their families, sometimes the best decision is to take elements from both cultures to create an unforgettably unique event.

Combining Cultures Wedding planners of multicultural fusion weddings definitely have a large task at hand. Together, Smita Mohindra (owner, lead event architect and planner) and Shawna Yamamoto (event management specialist and lead floral artist) make up the design team for Ethnic Essence, a top multicultural event planning company based in Los Angeles. Mohindra and Yamamoto have created amazing weddings and encountered many circumstances that can get complicated when trying to combine two cultures. A trend that Ethnic Essence has been seeing is the merging of contemporary or Western style weddings and cultural traditions. Many Eastern style weddings not only include cultural traditions, but now also integrate popular Western customs such as bachelor/ette parties and bridal showers. With

the emergence of Bollywood in American culture, the popularity of incorporating colorful and enchanting Eastern wedding traditions here in the U.S. is also rapidly increasing. Fusion weddings are being held at unique venues with over-the-top dĂŠcor and entertainment. Another emerging trend is for bridesmaids to contribute to the entertainment by doing a choreographed Middle-Eastern dance routine at the reception.

Traditional Cuisine The food seems to be the starting point for most reception planning. The menu for fusion weddings is usually the most difficult part for the bride and groom. Ideally, multicultural couples want to integrate traditional food. If it is not possible to have traditional food at the actual wedding due to catering regulations, pre-parties will be inundated with cultural cuisine. A second option is for dessert to be traditional or theme-oriented since unique desserts are usually allowed at any venue. Although food choice is a very important aspect of a wedding, there are so many more decisions to make in this integration process. The following are some more suggestions of how to creatively fuse two different cultures:

Ease Your Guests In

Have Ethnic Décor

Try not to overwhelm your guests with too many ethnic traditions that are foreign to them. Focus your energy on incorporating a few of your most important traditions.

Showcase those stunning ethnic decorations with great lighting. Colorful lighting with drapes will accent your décor well.

Take Turns There are many different ways that you can fuse two different cultures. One of the easiest ways to handle a multicultural wedding is to focus on one culture during the wedding ceremony and the other culture at the wedding reception.

Hire Musicians It goes without saying that music from your native country is a must. Consider hiring a band or ensemble that specializes in cultural music to play some of this traditional music during key parts of your reception.

Speak Your Language

Wear Traditional Clothing

Entertain Your Guests

The bride, groom and attendants should all wear culturally traditional attire for the ceremony. The guests will certainly love this, especially those who don’t know much about your culture.

Look to festive cultural entertainment companies when planning this aspect of your wedding reception. You may want to have professional dancers or entertainers to treat your guests to a unique cultural performance.

Ethnic Essence

10...... Winter / Spring 2009

Ethnic Essence

Plan to have a small part of the ceremony done in your native tongue (preferably with a translator for those that don’t speak the language so they don’t miss anything).

Hosting and planning a multicultural wedding may not be simple, but in today’s world, families must learn to adjust and embrace other cultures when young people choose partners across traditional boundaries. If you are wanting to add a bit of romance and history to your wedding celebration, look to your background and incorporate some of the ethnic traditions you find into your wedding. A wedding is the fusion of two lives, and by demonstrating that in your ceremony you can create a signature and unparalleled celebration. o

Couples are affirming their origins when they exchange marriage vows

global wedding traditions AFTER THOUGHT Honoring Family At some point during the ceremony have the overseer speak about the importance of family in your lives. Next the bride and groom each pick up roses and gracefully walk over to their parents. The bride presents a rose to her mother and grandmother while the groom presents to his. (Or any other special women - like a godmother). The bride and groom meet in the center and walk back up to the alter together where they can then continue their ceremony.

While some ethnic wedding traditions are rarely practiced today, others are experiencing a renaissance as couples acknowledge the heritage of their ancestors by following certain customs. People are even merging multiple ethnic wedding traditions and ethnic wedding attire, both the old and the new, to create a wedding uniquely their own. Many of the nearly 2.5 million couples marrying each year will have formal weddings that incorporate some specific ethnic ceremonies. If you are looking to add a bit of romance and history to your wedding celebration, embrace your background and incorporate one of these distinctive traditions into your wedding:

wives. Young girls learn secret codes and secret languages that allow them to talk with other married women without their husbands understanding what is being said.

Vietnamese Traditions

During the nuptial Mass, the couple will often kiss a cross to show faithfulness to each other and their God. Mariachi music is also an essential part of Mexican wedding celebrations. Before the first dance, the guests enclose the couple in a heart-shaped ring. There may be a piñata (made out of paper mâché) either in the shape of a heart or the couple’s favorite animal that will be filled with candy for the children at the reception.

In a Vietnamese wedding, the groom leads a procession to the bride’s house, gathering family and friends along the way. When the group arrives, they present the bride with gifts of clothes, jewelry and currency. The groom’s mother is the only one that does not join the procession, an act to show the bride that there is no rivalry between them.

Celtic Symbols A beautiful way to incorporate Celtic symbols into your wedding is with Celtic knot-work designs on the rings. The designs are formed by using one or several unbroken lines. The more the lines interlace each other, the more they protect against evil. Examples of these are love knots and the triquetra, a three-pronged knot, which symbolizes the trinity (the Celts always connected everything in threes).

African Traditions Several tribal communities of Africa follow the tradition of imparting training to young girls to become good

12...... Winter / Spring 2009

Mexican Traditions Mexico is a predominately Roman Catholic country and weddings there happen within a nuptial Mass. Godparents have a significant role in the wedding ceremony. The Godmother carries a rope or a rosary symbolizing fertility. The rope is placed on the bride and groom’s head in a figure eight as they take their vows. Some godparents may hold wine glasses for the wedding toast.

Quaker Wedding Ceremony A Quaker wedding ceremony is quite different from others in that the bride is not escorted down the aisle by anyone. Instead she simply presents herself. Quakers believe that this symbolizes that the bride is not an object that belongs to anyone, instead she belongs only to herself. Another difference between Quaker weddings is that a member of the clergy does not preside over the ceremony. These are wonderful customs representing a multitude of legacies passed from one generation to another. The special wedding rituals mentioned are evidence of how much influence ethnic practices have on wedding celebrations to this very day. Whether discovering roots lost over the years or acknowledging familiar family customs, couples are affirming their origins when they exchange marriage vows. Your wedding guests will also appreciate experiencing some of your wonderful cultural traditions. o

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed,

something Take into consideration the environmental and social impacts of the occasion and use it to honor your commitment to the environment

Weddings are often an extravagant affair, with much money, care, attention to detail and time being lavished on creating the ultimate day for the bride and groom. If you are an environmentally and socially conscious couple, you may want to consider sharing your eco-savvy and social awareness with your family and friends by actively demonstrating how it is possible to have a “green wedding” and still maintain the essence of elegance and sophistication many expect from such an important event. It’s really not as out-of-the-ordinary as it sounds—last year, Brides.com estimated that approximately 33 percent of future brides and grooms in the U.S. are planning an eco-friendly wedding. The quality and choice of products has so steadily improved that the green concept is spreading, allowing hosts to embrace the earth without sacrificing style. By Charron Conley

14...... Winter / Spring 2009

green Here are five tips on throwing a socially responsible wedding: Locally-Sourced Flowers Flowers used at weddings and receptions have a tendency to be out of season and therefore imported. Transportation and care of these flowers requires extra resources. Try to use locally sourced flowers. If you want special floral arrangements that require shipment, consider fair trade flowers. The floral industry is currently under scrutiny for its poor working conditions, and fair trade flowers help to ensure that consideration is given to the worker’s conditions. You can also make your own bouquet with local or wild flowers allowing it to be as unique and creative as you are.

Outdoor Venue Have the wedding outside, instead of in an energy-inefficient reception hall. If you have an outdoor wedding, you can utilize the natural beauty of the site to have fewer wasteful decorations.

Non-Disposible Utensils Disposable plates, cups, napkins and cutlery can create masses of waste at large wedding receptions. Consider hiring non-disposable cutlery and crockery instead. If that’s not viable, try to use recycled paper products. Bamboo and glass are also great treeless options.

Green Gown Does your wedding dress really need to be new? Consider a pre-owned dress–you can save a stack of cash by doing so! If you do wish to purchase a new dress, try to ensure that it is made from natural, organic materials such as organic silk, bamboo or hemp. Erase the picture in your mind of a “Bride in Birkenstocks” with a wreath of dried flowers on her head. The modern bride wears her “green” with panache. For a completely eco-chic dress, take a look at designer Adele Wechsler (adelewechler.com) who designs amazing silk gowns for the runway.

The Gift That Goes Anywhere A great way to continue your socially conscious wedding ideology into your new married life is to create a honeymoon registration. A honeymoon registry is a new and exciting concept where your wedding guests can help you to achieve your dream honeymoon vacation by purchasing pieces of the trip as a wedding gift. With weddings and marriages constantly evolving away from tradition, typical gifts such as china become antiquated. People are getting married later in life, thus less need for an overhaul of home necessities as wedding gifts. There is a great cost to the environment in acquiring unnecessary gifts, which makes a honeymoon registry a great alternative to a regular wedding registry. Many new companies are coming out that allow you to plan out your honeymoon and have the guests to be a part of your experience by contributing. Websites such as Paradise Registry (www.paradiseregistry. com), Honeyfund (honeyfund.com) and For The Moon (forthemoon.com) look just like a department store registry but instead of household items you register for a honeymoon vacation. The trip is then broken-down into pieces with many price range options, for guests to purchase as wedding gifts. Once you have decided on your honeymoon destination, it is time to sign-up for the registry (most registries are free or have a small fee). Honeymoon specialists can work with you to select optional activities or tours that you may want to experience on your honeymoon. You can get as specific as “I want a sunset cruise,” an upgrade to a “luxurious honeymoon suite,” or a “couples massage.” You can also just request that your guests give you contributions to your overall honeymoon fund. The websites will keep a tally for you along with the names of those guests who have contributed. The gift of travel is a unique option that will truly be a useful addition to beginning your life together!

Eco-Friendly Ring Diamond and gold mining are some of the dirtiest businesses in the world. The production of one simple gold ring results in 20 tons of mine waste. Buy jewelry made from recycled precious metals and stones. Check out a company called Greenkarat (Greenkarat.com) to find beautiful and socially responsible rings. And don’t forget the possibilities of transforming vintage pieces into radiantly recycled classics. After all, everyone needs something borrowed.

16...... Winter / Spring 2009

Getting married is one of the biggest commitments you’ll ever make. Take into consideration the environmental and social impacts of the occasion and use it to honor your commitment to the environment. You may even inspire your guests to go greener in the process? Share this urgent message that we need to protect our natural resources in the same way that a marriage agrees two individuals to protect and care for each other. o

Although exchanging vows in a tropical beach seems like the champagne lifestyle of the rich and famous, these celebrations can be very budget friendly

In the chaos of selecting a reception menu, addressing countless invitations and figuring out seating arrangements, what bride hasn’t harbored fantasies of getting hitched in a Las Vegas chapel? Or maybe at a sun-drenched tropical resort? Getting married somewhere other than the bride’s hometown is a fast-growing trend. The trend first emerged about 10 years ago among second-time and older brides; now more first-time brides and grooms are planning weddings and honeymoons in exotic locales. Depending on where a couple decides to exchange vows, these runaway weddings can really simplify plans. For starters, it’s an excuse to whittle down the guest list. While the average wedding has 200 people, according to Brides Magazine, destination weddings have 30 to 40 guests tops. Although exchanging vows in a tropical beach seems like the champagne lifestyle of the rich and famous, these celebrations can be very budget friendly. Weddings have become big business for many resorts, which offer special packages and even the services of an on-site wedding coordinator to oversee the details.

Tropical Mexico Mexico needs no introduction as far as exotic wedding destinations go. Mexico is packed with some breathtaking wedding venues alongside some picture-perfect scenery. From the golden shores to the mountains, from jungles and beautiful waterfalls to old colonial cities with their antique charm, Mexico offers an unparalleled experience to all those who want to tie the knot. Today, couples are more frequently choosing Mexico as a wedding destination. Given the opportunity to celebrate the once-in-a-lifetime affair amid stunning natural wonders, it is not hard to see the reason. Mexico is the perfect getaway for your beach wedding and honeymoon, all at a very affordable price. Know Before You Go: In Mexico, wedding season coincides with hurricane season (June–November) so plan around it.

A Guide to Destination Wedding Hotspots

Pacific Islands Celebrate your wedding in the Pacific Islands, and you really will feel like you are getting married in paradise. These countless islands, from relatively large Bali to the five thousand tiny and uninhabited isles of the Philippines, are sparkling jewels set in a turquoise ocean. They are famed for their white sand beaches, towering mountains, verdant hills and spectacular volcanoes, valleys and waterfalls. Numerous traditional villages, hidden away in the island interiors, are a world away from the lively cities with their myriad of cultural influences and exciting nightlife. The Pacific Islands are of simply stunning natural beauty and full of romance for an unforgettable wedding day. At your wedding reception, you will be able to enjoy the delicious Pacific Island cuisine, which includes an abundance of tropical fruit, fresh seafood, meat, spices and a huge variety of vegetables. Wedding cakes in this region are often very elaborate. Know Before You Go: You and your guests will require vaccination shots before traveling here. Check with your physician and find out what shots you will need and inform your guests.

Best known for Bob Marley and dreadlocks, Jamaica is much more than just reggae and Rastas

Jamaica Best known for Bob Marley and dreadlocks, Jamaica is much more than just reggae and Rastas. Lush mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, sophisticated golf resorts and stunning pink sand strands mean that there is a vacation for every taste and style. Approximately the size of Connecticut, Jamaica is blessed with natural amenities. Its mountains reach up more than 7,000 feet and its soil will grow almost anything. Although Kingston is the capital and the largest city, it does not attract the same volume of visitors that Montego Bay, Ocho Rios or Negril do. Ocho Rios is also a bustling cruise port. Recently, more visitors are learning what the real Jamaica is all about as they leave their resorts and explore the diversity of Jamaica’s people, landscape and culture. Know Before You Go: In Jamaica, if it is not locked-up or nailed-down, it is liable to be stolen. Theft is high in Jamaica, so be percautious with valuables.

St. Lucia The enchanting island of St. Lucia seems to have been created for romance and is the ideal location for your destination wedding. There’s a hint of the South Pacific about the island as well as a mixed European heritage. The twin coastal peaks of the Pitons shelter magnificent rainforests full of lush blooms and tropical birds. St. Lucia’s magical ambiance will create the perfect atmosphere for your ceremony. The interior of this large island is rich with the cool, damp shade created by the Rainforest canopy of trees, which falls on cascading waterfalls. Know Before You Go: Because this island is so small, medical care is limited. There are two public hospitals and one private hospital in St. Lucia, neither of which provide the same level of care found in an American hospital. Make sure your guests are aware of this if they have health issues.

The French Riviera has been home to both rich and famous movie stars and famous French artists for centuries

The French Riviera Celebrate your wedding in the French Riviera, one of the most spectacular regions in Europe. Nowhere else in France can you delight in such fashionable elegant surroundings and international glamour than along the ‘Côte d’Azur.’ This region has been home to both rich and famous movie stars and famous French artists for centuries. Today it offers a spectacular combination of jet set coastal resorts and romantic hillside towns, the perfect setting for a romantic wedding in France! The French Riviera’s most famous resorts include Cannes, Nice, Antibes, Saint Tropez and Monte Carlo. Several smaller towns have become increasingly sought after for their quaint fishing harbors, peaceful beaches and lush greenery. Know Before You Go: The exchange rate from the American dollar to the Euro could make things more expensive. Be sure to account for transcontinental inflation in your budget.

Florida Miami is the most exotic city in the United States and also has some of the most beautiful beaches of any city in the world for wedding destinations. There are lots of alternative outdoor locations, including yachts and launches. In addition to Miami, another destination wedding location is Key West, an idyllic tropical island at the end of a 100-mile chain of islands and keys off the southern Florida coast. Florida is also home to cities like Tampa and Fort Lauderdale as well as the Theme Parks of Orlando that make for great weddings. Know Before You Go: With high temperatures and humidity in Florida, you are susceptible to bug bites, heat stoke, and sunburns if you are visiting the area. Bring sunscreen and stay hydrated, especially older guests.

Detailing Wedding dresses emphasize detailing with added embellishments such as subtle beading, ribbons, bows, and, of course, lace. Look for subtle detailing that’s both ultra-feminine, yet elegant. These small added details and embellishments can be immensely flattering if not overdone.

Grecian Check out the soft sophistication of a Grecian goddess-style gown. Soft and floaty, flattering and seductive, and great for any body type. The toga dress is designed with a unique, flowing cut that is less fitted around the waist and hips. The Grecian-inspired look is a romantic touch for any wedding.

Sleek F or a glamorous take on your dress, a sleek gown is the perfect way to achieve a sexy, romantic and delicate look. Think plunging necklines, silk charmeuse, and delicate beading. Sleek gowns are made of softer fabrics that provide a lot of motion and underscore the femininity of the gown.

Over The Top B old accessories, vibrant hues, and striking silhouettes are forefront in the latest ready-to-wear collections. Gowns with feathers and feather-inspired gatherings from the waist to the ankles are sure to make a statement. These feathery gowns are designed with loose, organza-style bodices and were featured in grey, silver, pink and white hues for the season. The Modern Guide to Selecting Jewelry for Bridesmaids

By R. Eason

She could be your sister or a very close

Bracelets

friend, either way your bridesmaids are

Sleeve lengths, the diameter of the bouquet and apparel accessories are factors that need to be considered when opting to wear bracelets.. If a bracelet is worn, the fit should be just right. Bracelets should not get caught in the bouquets. If long, smooth, tight, fitting gloves are to be worn, you may want to consider adding a glitzy bracelet over the glove. This dramatic elegant sparkle is best for evening ceremonies and when the dress and glove is in a vivid or deep color which provides a high contrast. This particular look is best achieved with a smaller diameter simple floral bouquet which allows both the glove and the bracelet to capture the attention. When not to wear a bracelet? Typically winter weddings do not dictate the use of bracelets. Skip wearing bracelets when other accessories are being used (like hand muffs and short gloves). Omit wearing the bracelets if the bouquets are arranged in a large diameter or made up of a complex mix of flora. The primary focus in these cases is the bouquets, not the wrists. Large bouquets command the focal point during the ceremony, and bracelets will not be seen.

a significant part of your wedding. In being your bridesmaid, she plays the role of a confidant, guide, and the one who helps you out with various tasks for your wedding planning. Selecting unique bridesmaid jewelry is a perfect gesture to acknowledge and appreciate her contribution on the special day. If you have chosen wisely, they will be able to wear the jewelry for years afterward – and it’s guaranteed they’ll remember your happy day each time they do!

Earrings The style of the earrings is dictated by the shape of your face and your hairstyle. The rule of thumb is to wear larger sized earrings if no necklace is to be worn. This will uplift the focal point to your bridesmaids’ face. Select larger dangle earrings for hairstyles that have the romantic wispy look. If the bridesmaids’ hair is to be styled in an “up dos” with hair accessories or even fresh flowers interwoven, then the focal point is the hairstyle not the earrings. Select simple earrings that will not distract from the hair accessories. When earrings are concerned, there are many personal preferences. In this day and age many bridesmaids will have their ears pierced more than once. Stick to simple color coordinated studs that work well with the color of the dress.

jewelry

This is a method of making sure that there are no fashion mishaps and that the theme of the wedding is carried through to the accessories The question if multiple earrings should be worn is one of etiquette. If the bridesmaids are in question etiquette dictates that they should ask the bride. At the other end of the pierced ear spectrum is that some individuals do not have pierced ears. Clip on earrings are one solution; however, there are a number of people who are uncomfortable with these non-pierced earrings.

Hawaiian Leis Hawaiian themed weddings are becoming more and more popular. Traditionally, the Hawaiian wedding does not have bridesmaids; however, contemporary brides are including their maidens. This is one circumstance that the type of ceremony dictates the necklace and the dress as well. The necklaces traditionally worn in these tropical weddings are

Anklets are a great way to add a touch of sparkle or a glint of gold. Wear an anklet if the hemline of the dress is above the ankles or the slit reveals the ankle. Anklets can be either a simple chain or beads (including pearls) for casual or daytime weddings. Evening weddings typically dictate more sparkle. If the theme of the event is tropical or Hawaiian consider wearing foot jewelry. Most Hawaiian weddings are performed barefoot, so take the opportunity to accessorize! The foot jewelry for the bridesmaids incorporates red beads or gemstones to accent the traditional red bridal color. To accent the darker red hues of the Hawaiian print dresses, look for garnets in your foot jewelry. You may choose to accentuate only one foot or both feet, whatever your preferences. Materials range from faux pearls to real gemstones. Another type of wedding that gives the opportunity of wearing different kind of jewelry is the Grecian theme. Arm bands are becoming increasing popular along with this type of event. The major drawback to wearing armbands during wedding ceremonies is one of comfort. The bold metal designs offer a dramatic look and are often a little heavier than you expect. When selecting armbands always try them on and don’t be afraid to test them out for a few minutes more. Comfort is the number one factor when deciding to purchase this accessory. Themed weddings or not, armbands give off a modern elegance with a young sophisticated style.

For the Flower Girl leis. They are made up of white or red natural flowers. These flowers may include ginger (which is the most delicate), orchids, tuber roses or even carnations. This necklace is typically 40 inches long (a closed circle) and is worn half flowing down the front of the bodice and the other half the lei flowing down the back. Hawaiian tradition also dictates that a mother-to-be should wear an “open lei” (not a closed lei) for good luck. Ankles, Feet and Arms Themed weddings typically make use of some rather not-sotraditional accessories and they bring about some fun with a touch of elegance. So why not add some focal points to the forgotten but visible areas of the ankles, feet and arms?

36...... Winter / Spring 2009

Overall there is a diminished use of the tiara in today’s weddings; however, it still has its place. Think of the tiara as jewelry. This accent provides more flexibility for the flower girl by achieving a slim elegant sparkle up top without having the complications of the veil. The tiara does not obscure the face of the flower girl and it’s more durable than the delicate veil headpiece. Most often the bride will select a small necklace or charm for the flower girl to wear for the special day. To make the gift even more special there is an option of engraving the charm either with the flower girl’s initials, name or a small note of appreciation. Some people opt to engrave the date of the wedding. If the flower girl is the “miniature bride” then the necklace should accentuate the dress, a small pearl pendant or a simple strand of

easy focal point. Consider a necklace that is intricate in design with strapless dresses. Necklaces that have a “v” shape enhance the vertical points in the sweetheart necklines.

Henna imitation pearls is a prime choice. She’s a tiny reminder of the girl you once were. She’s dressed up in her best. Give your flower girl a gift she can wear on your wedding day, and cherish for years to come.

Jewelry as Gifts It is acceptable for the bride to give jewelry to the bridesmaids as a thank you gift and also to wear during the event. This is a method of making sure that there are no fashion mishaps and that the theme of the wedding is carried through to the accessories. Keeping this in mind, there are a few things that the bride must consider when gift giving: •Take into consideration each individual bridesmaid’s tastes and preferences • Acknowledge and be aware of any allergies • Obtain appropriate sizes of jewelry • Check to see which individuals have pierced ears, if giving earrings When gift giving, the bride does not have to give every bridesmaid identical pieces of jewelry. The theme of wedding can be carried through to the jewelry by giving similar but different pieces. It is perfectly fine for the each bridesmaid to wear different accessories. In fact the more you personalize and give each bridesmaid a similar but different look, the happier they will be.

Necklaces and Necklines The most successful accessories take into consideration the type of ceremony and the style of the dress. Lately, there has been a trend of bare necks; that is not wearing any necklaces and favoring the focal point of the earrings. This can be considered with any dress and is always an option! The rule of thumb for not wearing any necklaces is when the bodice, collar, or neckline of the dress is ornately embellished. In these circumstances the necklace detracts from the design of the dress. An embellishment includes the use of lace, sequins, crystals, beads, pearls etc. When should a necklace be considered? When the necklace enhances the neckline, accents the dress and provides an

Henna is considered to be an ancient Indian body art. Henna is a flowering plant found in some tropical regions of Africa and Asia. Its leaves produce a special red-orange dye molecule called lawsone that binds with protein molecules, making it an excellent dye for the skin. It is used in creating elaborate ethnic or contemporary designs and exotic patterns on various parts of the body; traditionally Henna was applied on the hands and feet of an Indian bride and women preparing for special festive ceremonies. Henna designs can be used as armlets, bracelets, anklets, and general designs on hands and feet. Other than the ethnic and conventional designs, you can opt for contemporary designs, which are sleek and fashionable. Putting henna designs on each of your bridesmaid’s arms, hands, or feet can create an amazingly unique look for your wedding.

Raw & Black Diamond Jewelry Your best girls will love you forever if you opt to customize their jewelry with raw and black diamonds; your wallet won’t hate you either, as these sparkly alternatives are much less expensive than the typical version. Raw diamonds are typically opaque and elicit an antique, earthy look. Black Diamonds look good on anyone and with anything, so these stones are perfect for everything from the most casual ceremony to a black tie event.

Hair Accessories Decorative hairpieces are a glamorous way of adding a touch of elegance and style. Hairpins add dazzle and excitement to wedding hairstyles and are a unique way to enhance the look of your entire bridal party. The great thing about hairpins is that you have so many choices. You can add as many hairpins as you want and by mixing several types of hairpins together you can create a style that is completely your own. Hairpins will also make great gifts for your bridesmaids. You can even change the color of the crystals to match your bridal colors or the dresses of your bridesmaids. For a classic look have your bridesmaids wear a simple pearl hair comb. Some other accessory options for your bridesmaids are fresh flowers, crystals, feathers or feathered hair ornaments, and pretty barrettes. o

Encore Weddings By Nancy Clark

It seems like everyone has an opinion on second weddings. “You shouldn’t wear white” or “You shouldn’t have such a fancy second wedding” or even “Eloping is what made the first marriage fail – you have to have a big church wedding this time.” If you’re planning a second wedding while trying to sort out etiquette from opinions, here are stories from two different couples with unique approaches to their encore nuptials. Don’t worry – you’re older, you’re wiser and you’ve got some experience under your belt – this time should be a snap, right?

Right: Andrea Pastorino, Claude Joseph, and their 15-month-old son, taking vows at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas. Photo: Larry Hook.

38...... Winter / Spring 2009

Andrea Pastorino & Claude Joseph When Andrea Pastorino and Claude Joseph decided on Vegas as the setting for their nuptials, he took charge of making the arrangements while she got down to the serious business of finding the right outfit for herself and a baby-sized tux for the couple’s 15-month-old son. She made a bee-line for the mall seeking a modest pantsuit straight off the rack when she spied a crisp Doris-Day-style dress that required little or no tailoring. But before she could plunk down her credit card, the salesclerk drew Andrea aside, took her hands in hers and looked her straight in the eye saying, “This is the most important day of your life. You deserve to have all of the parts that make you feel special.” Turns out the clerk was right on, says the new Mrs. Joseph, who had been waiting to inhale until after the ceremony. Had it been just the two of them sans little Ashton, they might have opted to go the Elvis-as-minister route, Andrea confesses. But the fact of the matter was that they didn’t want to have to make excuses for the white suit and pompadour hair when their offspring got curious about who played what role at mommy and daddy’s wedding.

Don’t worry – you’re older, you’re wiser and you’ve got some experience under your belt – this time should be a snap, right?

The ceremony at the Bellagio included a limo to and from the county courthouse on The Strip to pick up a marriage certificate. OJ’s trial was dominating the news and the flow of traffic which meant the limo driver couldn’t park close in. But other than the baby dropping the groom’s cell phone down the inner workings of the car door like a penny into a piggy bank which required that the limo be taken in to the repair shop and the door disassembled to recover the phone, nothing else went awry, the bride reports. Because his three grown daughters and mother and her sister and father, not to mention the couple’s friends, are scattered across the nation, a virtual wedding was ideal. Guests logged onto the internet and watched the service real-time while the event was recorded on video and still photos were posted of every benchmark moment.

Debbie Jessup & Tim Schultz A ceremony at the Governor’s Residence at the Boettcher Mansion was a natural for Debbie Jessup, who has 27 years in the banking business, and Tim Schultz, president and executive director of the Boettcher Foundation. This setting provided the perfect intimate setting for a wedding party of 50, and at the top of the list of attendees were his two grown children (married with families of their own) and her three children (ranging in age from just-driving to just-out-of-college).

This is the most important day of your life. You deserve to have all of the parts that make you feel special on your day

Why We Wear White At Weddings Prior to Queen Victoria’s Wedding in 1840, women didn’t tend to go out and buy something special for the event. They just wore their best dress. Victoria wore a white dress, yes -- because that was the color of most (rich) women’s best dress at the time. Why rich women? Because white is so impractical! In the days when all items were washed by hand, you had to have money if you could afford a dress that would have to be washed after every wearing.

What Is Appropriate To Wear?

Debbie Jessup at her bridal shower at Mariel Botique. Photography: Steve Peterson.

“We purposely did not have a formal wedding party with a best man and maid of honor because the last thing we wanted to do was to appear to play favorites,” explains Debbie. Rather, the couple gave each of their children a role to play in the ceremony from spoken readings to blessings. “Both Tim and I really do feel that we have 5 children. They get along and thoroughly enjoy each other and we don’t take that for granted.” Emotions, it seems, are a primary concern of couples negotiating their own feelings as well as those of extended family members. It was Debbie’s close friend Denise Snyder who convinced Debbie that a girls’ gathering was in order for the gal-pals not on the abbreviated guest list to see Debbie’s wedding gown in person. Held at Mariel, Snyder’s store on Larimer Square, Debbie proclaims that the unveiling of the gown “was even better than a bachelorette party.” Decorous rather than basic, the girls-night-out was a big draw. Even the groom-to-be showed up at the all-girl confab with a lavish gift box for his future bride, departing before he risked odds on their marital success with a pre-service eyeful of her bridal gown. If there’s one thing a do-over teaches you it’s that not everyone can be Number One, nor does everyone want to be.o

40...... Winter / Spring 2009

“Can an encore bride wear white?” The answer in our modern world is a resounding “YES”! White is a perfect color for an encore bride since white is regarded as a symbol of joy rather than purity or virginity. Pastels and ivory are also popular color choices for the second wedding dress. Many second-time brides choose a simpler, more elegant or sophisticated wedding dress. Some second time brides will choose a floor length or cocktail length dress in white, off-white or a pretty pastel. A third option is to choose a dress that you may wear again, such as a cocktail length dress or a dressy, feminine looking suit. Many “etiquette experts” advise second-time brides to not wear a veil or a long train for their second wedding. Don’t listen to them! This is your day, wear what you want to wear!

Encore Accessories Maybe you had a very small first wedding and now you want to go all out! Wear what makes you feel beautiful! Another option is to wear decorative hair combs, headbands, flowers, satin gloves, tiaras, and even hats to complement your dress and wedding theme. With all the options available, finding your second marriage wedding dress should be fun and pretty easy!

Say “Yes”to No Stress Although many people will have opinions about you wedding, keep in mind that the most important component is the love you share with your future spouse By Susan M. Keenan

Perhaps the best reason for the bride and groom to pay for their wedding entirely on their own is the simple fact that it should grant them complete autonomy when it comes to making decisions about the wedding. However, the cost of many weddings is shared jointly among the wedding couple, the bride’s parents, and the groom’s parents. This simple fact leads to the inclusion of six different opinions when it comes to the decision making process. In turn, this often leads to a great deal of discussion and lively argument. Everyone believes that they have a right to some input since they are helping to pay for this grand event. Although the time before the wedding, the engagement period, should be one of the happiest times of their lives, it is also one of the most stressful, taking away from the happiness that each couple experiences. In fact,

every single person involved in the wedding has an opinion concerning some aspect of the wedding. Although some individuals will keep their thoughts to themselves, many will not. This can be one of the major sources of the increasing level of stress that is experienced by engaged couples. Although the wedding is supposed to be about the couple, it often becomes focused around what the bride’s parents want or what the groom’s parents want. Plus, in today’s society, with all of the broken marriages and subsequent remarriages, this can add up to quite a few people being involved in decisions concerning the wedding plans. Step-parents, step-grandparents, half-sisters, half-brothers, parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, best friends, and even friends all seem to have something to say whether they are putting any finances toward the wedding extravaganza or not. Everyone seems to have an opinion or a favor to ask. Relatively soon into the planning the bride is inundated with questions and requests. “Can I please have so-and-so as my escort for the bridal party?” “I think white roses would make a better selection for the boutonnières, don’t you?” “Why do they have more guests than I?” “You simply must have the reception immediately after the wedding ceremony.” Trying to keep the peace takes the forefront and planning the wedding takes a secondary position. The bride might feel helpless and unable to take charge and communicate clearly to these people that it is, afterall, her wedding. Eventually, things settle down, but, in the meantime, stress overrides enjoyment. Here are some helpful hints abut how to deal with stress. • Know what you want before everyone you know starts telling you what you’re wedding should be. Talk about the kind of wedding you want. When you start sharing the news, without having a clue about the experience you want to create, you are more susceptible to pressure and sway from others.

42...... Winter / Spring 2009

• Stay connected with the man you will marry. Make a promise that you will make all decisions together, and back each other up. The instant there is vulnerability in your partnership, you will both be swayed more easily by other people’s opinions. • Every person has something to say about your wedding. It’s a given. Just accept it. Whether they are paying for it or not ... no matter whom you are or what age, you will be bombarded with unsolicited advice.

Momzilla! Similar to a Bridezilla, a Momzilla is highly controlling of the many elements to a wedding. Everything must be perfect for her child’s day. This child is often the bride, but may sometimes be the groom. The excuse for being controlling and overbearing is usually that the Momzilla has paid for a large amount of the wedding expenses. Common conflicts in which Momzilla may attack include: • last-minute changes to plans • guests/party members who she does not like • the bride and groom declaring that they do not like her ideas. • she speaks of your wedding as “MY” wedding

• Your friends and family have an agenda for your wedding. People tend to see your wedding as a chance to satisfy their own needs. They have a propensity to act out what its all about for them – not you! You have to set clear boundaries, and also shield yourself emotionally from the sometimes-negative opinions of wellmeaning friends and relatives. • You can include loved ones without letting them run the show. There are so many creative ways to honor them in the ceremony and at the reception. Get over your desire to make everyone happy and focus instead on honoring family ties in a way that is meaningful to your marriage.

• Your happiness in life (and marriage) does not depend on your wedding day.Our society places a great emphasis on having a perfect wedding and not enough focus on having an awesome marriage. It’s okay to be temporarily obsessed and to yearn for the ideal wedding–we all go there at some point–but you have to keep your eye on what’s truly important. Too many brides treat the wedding itself as something to be worshipped and served. Don’t give the wedding day so much power! Step back and realize, the most important part of the day is not the day itself ... but that you walked down that aisle and into the arms of the one you love … the one you look forward to building your life with. One night a week neither of you are allowed to mention the word wedding or anything wedding related. This can be a date night, or just relaxing at home together to remind you why you’re going through all this craziness in the first place! Quite often, no problems arise and the wedding is planned peacefully and without incident. However, just as frequently, problems do occur and only a semblance of peace remains. Family dynamics play a large part in determining the amount of enjoyment that goes into planning the wedding. o

Keep slippers on or have the groom carry you to bed. • It is bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the actual ceremony. • It is bad luck to make your own wedding gown. • It is good luck for a bride to dream of her wedding day. • It is a sign of very good luck to find a spider crawling on your wedding gown.

March To Your Own Beat Alternative song to the traditional wedding march R ichard Wagner’s “Bridal Chorus,” also known as “Here Comes

The Bride,” has been the customary processional in Western weddings for over a century and while this is one of the most familiar wedding traditions, there are plenty of alternatives for those who want something different. You can choose another classical piece, or you can break from tradition entirely and select music from popular culture, a song that has special significance to you as a couple. You also do not have to have an organ playing the tune. Guitars, flutes, and harps are common organ alternatives, but you can have any kind of musician you want or play a CD if you aren’t having live musicians. Here are some popular and/or unique alternatives to the typical wedding march:

Some of the most important aspects of your wedding day are taken care of during this time, and it’s important that you take care of them as early as possible. Picking and ordering bridesmaid dresses, registering for gifts, finding a photographer and videographer, and most importantly, choosing your wedding dress—these are all tasks you don’t want to save until the last minute. You and your bridesmaids will all have a happier day if you’re all wearing dresses that flatter your natural beauty.

Wedding Resource Directory Six to Nine Months in Advance Six to nine months in advance is the best time to book hotels and flights for relatives and friends. Flights are often more reasonably priced at this time than if you were to book them too early or too late. Also, pin down what your wedding and reception will to look like and what kind of entertainment you want to have. Flowers are a must at a wedding, but flower shops need plenty of advanced warning to prepare the number of arrangements you will want to have at your wedding.

Wedding Resource Directory Six Months in Advance At this point in the planning, check out stationary or party stores to decide on an invitation design. Also, it’s not too early to have your bridal shower—having it earlier rather than later can prevent undue stress as your wedding date inches closer. Six months ahead, try to lovingly encourage your fiancé and his groomsmen to get fitted for their tuxedoes or suits. You and your husband-to-be should also consider speaking to your bank about joint checking/ savings accounts, additional loans, or financial counseling to help you prepare for your future together.

Four to Six Months in Advance The tastiest part of the planning period! Start checking out potential caterers and visit local bakeries to decide on the look and flavor of your wedding cake. Who doesn’t love free samples? In addition to food, be sure to take care of the wine and liquor arrangements for your reception during this time. This is also when you need to book your mode of transportation on the wedding day, whether it’s a limo, party bus, or horse and carriage.
