ANDREA L. “ANDEE” HOIG Why corporate philanthropy and small business service to community matters One of my favorite publications produced by ALH Media is our annual Giving Guide. I started covering nonprofit events and news over 35 years ago, photographing thousands of charity events and interviewing business leaders, entrepreneurs, owners, nonprofit executives and volunteers who truly do extraordinary work in the Omaha metro.

5. Supports local economic growth Small businesses are often integral to the economic growth of their communities. Their community service stimulates local economies and contribute to job creation and economic stability. Corporations, on the other hand, can have a broader economic impact by backing initiatives that promote education, job training, and entrepreneurship in communities they operate in.

Companies’ philanthropy and community engagement are significant and complementary aspects of responsible business practices and play crucial roles in shaping the social fabric and well-being of society. While corporations and small businesses differ in size and resources, their commitment to community service reflects a shared dedication to positive impact. Here’s why it matters: 1. Strengthens community ties Corporate and small business giving fosters strong relationships with the people of the community. Small businesses often serve as the backbone of communities, and their active engagement fosters a sense of belonging and solidarity. Larger corporations, with their broader reach, can amplify this impact by supporting multiple communities across regions.

2. Addresses local needs One of the key reasons why small businesses and corporations participate in philanthropy is to address local needs. They understand the unique challenges and opportunities in their communities and tailor their activity accordingly. Whether it’s sponsoring youth sports teams, donating to food banks or providing scholarships, businesses play a vital role in meeting needs close to home.

3. Reflects responsibility and reputation Philanthropy and community service signify that businesses are committed to more than just financial gains. These types of initiatives enhance a company’s reputation and can enhance its standing in the eyes of consumers, employees and investors.

4. Promotes employee engagement and satisfaction Companies of all sizes can benefit from increased employee engagement and satisfaction when they actively participate in community service. Employees appreciate working for organizations that give back to society, and opportunities to volunteer or support charitable causes can be personally fulfilling.

These partnerships can be mutually beneficial, helping businesses achieve their philanthropic goals while also assisting nonprofits in fulfilling their missions.

Can you tell us about your company's philosophy and motivations behind corporate philanthropy and giving back to the community?

What advice do you have for other businesses looking to initiate or enhance their corporate philanthropy programs?

Establish a philanthropy program that engages employees, which will strengthen morale and engagement. I recommend private foundations give some level of decision-making to even the youngest grandchild. The same is true for corporate philanthropy.

Establish guidelines about what your organization will support, then let employees actually decide on specific organizations and activities.

We live in an amazing community that has been good to us as a business and personally to those who work for us. We believe our role in the community extends beyond the services we provide.

Our core values include being actively engaged in our community to have a positive impact.

How do you believe corporate philanthropy contributes to your company's overall mission and values?

How do you view the long-term sustainability and impact of your corporate philanthropic efforts on both your company and the communities you serve?

Our core values are people, excellence, service, community, innovation, wellness, accountability, industry forefront, diversity and integrity. Philanthropy connects with all of these values because it is about creating long term-value for the company and the community.

Sustainability of philanthropy is about whether activities contribute to systemic or structural improvements to the issues that we seek to address. Many of the organizations we support have been around a long time and have proven track records. With that said, we do consider newer nonprofits.

What role does employee involvement play in your corporate philanthropy efforts, and how does it impact your workforce's morale and engagement?

Can you highlight any partnerships or collaborations that have arisen from your philanthropic activities and how they have contributed to achieving your giving back goals?

We ask our employees to actively participate in choosing organizations to support and to identify how we can support them.

We recently learned that we can do a cooking class at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Omaha, which we plan to have our entire group do in early 2024. We look for similar activities that bring us together and support the community.

Our recent support of retinitis pigmentosa research with University of Nebraska is likely to have significant impact on seniors. We are very aware of how the loss of sight and hearing affects the aging population. While this effort was just implemented in 2023, we believe that the research at University of Nebraska will have positive impact on vision in the future.

How does your company choose which charitable causes or community organizations to support, and what criteria do you use for selection?

What is your vision for the future of your company's corporate philanthropy and community engagement initiatives?

As a business that deals with trusts and estates, we see how often families lose family members to heart issues and cancer. We have been longtime supporters of nonprofits related to cancer including American Cancer Society and Nebraska Cancer Coalition.

We have also been longtime supporters of American Heart Association.

Our vision is to continue to engage in philanthropy in a manner that will have impact in the areas that we have witnessed as significantly affecting the lives of our clients. As an organization engaged in estate planning, we routinely see the effect on families from mental health and illness. We have also witnessed elder abuse. While there are many causes worthy of support, we want to provide support in a way that has impact.

WENDY WISEMAN “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.” ~ Coretta Scott King Can you tell us about your company’s philosophy and motivations behind corporate philanthropy and giving back to the community?

While we have clients across the nation, Omaha has been our home base for nearly 35 years. Giving back to this generous, supportive community is endemic to us. It’s as much a passion as it is a responsibility. So many organizations here are making a difference and for us to give our time, talents and marketing expertise to them is our privilege.

How does your company choose which charitable causes or community organizations to support, and what criteria do you use for selection?

Often, because of our reputation, organizations solicit our help. They may ask us to serve on their boards and/or pursue a branding or development project. Other times, our clients ask us to join in their support of a cause with monetary contributions. We choose to work with organizations whose work inspires us because of the outcomes.

What specific initiatives or projects has your company been involved in as part of its corporate philanthropic efforts?

How do you view the long-term sustainability and impact of your corporate philanthropic efforts on both your company and the communities you serve?

At nearly 35 years old, our company has contributed thousands of dollars in corporate philanthropic contributions, and we can list more than 100 organizations that we’ve supported. We’ve completely rebranded several, helping get to mission, vision, values, naming and logo. We’ve consulted on organizational strategies and planning to meet business goals. We’ve developed integrated marketing plans to stimulate donations, and we’ve helped write grant applications.

Every effort to serve others, no matter how small, has an impact that lasts longer than one might imagine, and that impact is multifaceted. Within our company, we gain the fulfillment inherent in knowing we applied our experience to making a difference, and this propels us into the future to keep on doing that.

How do you believe corporate philanthropy contributes to your company’s overall mission and values?

What is your vision for the future of your company’s corporate philanthropy and community engagement initiatives?

People want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. As a firm, when we make a point to look outward and give to our community, this creates the opportunity for people to work in a culture that advocates for work-life balance, appreciates talent and dedication, and allows for the application of their marketing knowledge and experience in spaces that help others in our community.

Constellation Collective will always support nonprofits in our community, particularly as need increases. Historically, the agency principals have been the ones to serve or be the front person for organizations we serve.

Today and in the future, front-line participation will be the purview of anyone on staff with the passion to serve.

In what ways do you measure the success and effectiveness of your corporate philanthropy initiatives?

We set goals with the organizations we support. Those goals may include increasing brand awareness, increasing contributions or inspiring advocacy. As with all of our efforts, we set measurable goals and check performance against them frequently.

A Champion for Health and Well-being Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska PURPOSEFUL IMPACT

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) is not only a provider of health insurance, the company is also a champion for the overall health and well-being of its members— and their towns, cities and counties—throughout the state, President and CEO Jeff Russell said.

BCBSNE will partner with Boys & Girls Clubs of the Midlands and Lincoln to address the youth mental health crisis.

Employees can champion causes with personal meaning, too. In honor of Volunteer Awareness Month in April, 73 employees volunteered at eight different organizations. A gift-matching program also amplifies personal donations to qualifying nonprofits. In 2022, BCBSNE matched more than $7,000 in donations to 33 organizations.

BCBSNE also initiated Ignite Nebraska in 2021 and served as its first employer partner. Ignite Nebraska works to solve challenges facing community members and businesses by providing career pathways and building a diverse talent pipeline, advancing workforce equity by opening the door to career opportunities previously inaccessible to some due to systemic inequalities.

“It always comes back to how our people care, not only for the work they do every day to improve the health and well-being of our members, but the communities we serve,” Russell said.

A Part of Something Bigger Harrison Financial Services

HELPING FAMILIES BUILD A BETTER LIFE, LEGACY AND COMMUNITY Harrison Financial Services is a premier financial planning and wealth management firm serving successful families and business owners. HFS is also a “purpose-driven” organization, owner/founder Tim Harrison said.

“Our purpose is to help families build a better life, legacy and community,” he said.

Closely related is an organizational commitment to making meaningful contributions to the community through multiple channels like volunteerism and fundraising.

“I ask everyone on our team to pick a purpose they are passionate about and get involved in it, try to make a mark,” Harrison said. “I feel it’s very important for everybody to feel like they’re a part of something bigger than themselves, and to be service-minded… How do you do that? A key component is giving back and helping their families be good stewards of their wealth.”

Examples of the company’s collective giving and individual team members’ participation abound.

For instance, HFS Director of Investments Jack McKeegan served as Corporate Walk Chair for the 2023 Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Nebraska Light The Night fundraising event. And HFS hosts a casino event that has raised more than $250,000 for LLS over the last five years.

“Since he was first diagnosed ten years ago, my family and I have joined the fight with so many to create a future where cancer is eradicated,” said Jamie Herbert, a local business community leader; his son is a leukemia survivor whose treatment protocol resulted from research that organization funded. “Jack, Tim, and the entire team at HFS have been instrumental in our work locally to raise awareness and funds. Jack joined the LLS Nebraska Board of Trustees a few years ago. He has worked tirelessly to find innovative ways to raise funds. HFS has turned ‘Casino Night’

into one of the premier events in the city, raising funds for LLS. Jack last year chaired the Light the Night Leadership Committee. He and the team are the epitome of community engagement.”

Another example of HFS’s community involvement is its relationship with Sammy’s Superheroes Foundation, said Erin Nahorny, a founding member of the foundation’s board of directors. HFS has embraced the nonprofit’s mission wholeheartedly through its ongoing support and its affiliation with financial services company Northwestern Mutual as a founding member of its Private Client Group; Northwestern Mutual has raised more than a million dollars toward childhood cancer over the last decade. An important tie to HFS is that Sammy’s Superheroes, which has donated to research projects across the country, is based in Columbus, Nebraska.

Harrison said that his company’s giving efforts have shifted somewhat in response to community needs at any given time. He also now works more strategically to involve younger team members in board and committee service and usher in the next generation of leaders.

Although the company has supported a wide variety of causes from health and wellness to youth and families, Harrison said, there are some areas of special interest such as mental health and wellness; the company has supported The Kim Foundation for years. Another focus is education, both financial education and education in general, which Harrison said are common elements in helping individuals improve their lives and— ultimately—the community. Harrison and his wife, Traci, have funded a full-ride scholarship for over a decade at the University of Nebraska Omaha’s College of Business Administration; both are UNO graduates and have been part of various university advisory boards and now serve as trustees for the university. Harrison has even been named a Distinguished Alumni.

The couple have also served in board positions through the years including for Salvation Army, Completely Kids, United Way and some private charitable foundations. The Harrisons see their personal efforts as both giving back and leading by example.

“Sammy’s Superheroes was founded after our son, Sammy, was diagnosed with stage 4, highrisk neuroblastoma in the summer of 2012.

We officially started as a nonprofit in March of 2013 after our friends had been selling T-shirts locally at high school football games.

Sam didn’t respond well to treatments at first and we had to start researching clinical trials all over the country. Some key activities and services of community foundations include raising and managing funds from individuals, families, businesses and other organizations; investing strategically to generate additional funding; and distributing grants to local nonprofits and community organizations or projects. They help donors achieve their philanthropic goals through donor-advised funds, planned giving options, and charitable giving strategies; and help local nonprofits become more effective and sustainable.

Community Foundations also help facilitate dialogue and initiatives, especially in an effort to solve complex local challenges; assess the needs of the community; and raise awareness about philanthropy and community issues, educating individuals and organizations about local needs and opportunities. Overall, community foundations bridge donors and the local community, help to connect resources with pressing needs, and contribute to the well-being and vitality of their communities.

Amazing donor impact At the Community Foundation for Western Iowa, we work with donors in a variety of innovative ways to create donorcentered solutions that help create lasting, positive impact. Through donor advised funds, scholarships, agency endowments and legacy giving, donors are able to make an impact today and also pave the way for a better future in western Iowa. In 2023, over $4.5 million in grants were awarded through the Community Foundation. These grants support the amazing work of nonprofits across our region, state, nation and the world. SHARE Iowa connects communities Over the past year, more than 250 nonprofit organizations across the nine counties of western Iowa started utilizing Share Iowa, a free dynamic online engagement platform, to better engage and communicate with the communities they serve.

Catrina Trabal, our Community Partnerships Manager, was very busy in 2023, holding trainings, working with nonprofits, and growing a network of philanthropic support for the good work these amazing organizations do every day. Also in 2023, Share Iowa was the community hub for Giving Tuesday 712, our region’s day of giving, providing communication support, templates for outreach, and fund development strategies for our nonprofit partners. Your generosity resulted in over $1.5 million in nonprofit support during this day of giving, and we congratulate everyone on the impact this giving will create! The Community Foundation was the headquarters for Giving Tuesday 712 this year, and we are truly grateful to the Charles E. Lakin Foundation for providing generous support for the Share Iowa platform, and Katelman Steel Fabrication of Council Bluffs for being our Giving Tuesday Presenting Sponsor for 2023.

IMPACT Summit and Women’s Fund of Southwest Iowa On September 26, the Community Foundation for Western Iowa and the Women’s Fund of Southwest Iowa Steering Committee welcomed nearly 450 women (and men!) to the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs for a day filled with inspiration, excitement and energy for the second IMPACT

Celebrating community through Impact Grants The Community Foundation Impact Grants Committee, a group of county residents and board members, helped to award 39 Community Impact Grants totaling $64,844.89 to nonprofit and city organizations throughout Pottawattamie County in early 2023. The Community Foundation received a record 74 grant proposals totaling $302,933 in project requests, with total project budgets combined at an astonishing $14 million dollars, signifying the incredible work that is being done in the cities throughout Pottawattamie County. Individual grant awards for this year’s funding cycle ranged from $500 to $5,000 to benefit innovative and meaningful projects that align with the Foundation’s mission to improve the lives of all county residents.

Helping to Make IT Happen On June 22, 2023, community nonprofit leaders from across the region completed the in-class portion of Make IT Happen, our proprietary, donor-centered learning program designed to build practical fundraising and development knowledge.

A Letter from Diane Knicky MIDLANDS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Investing in the Power of Community

The mission of Midlands Community Foundation (MCF) is to be a catalyst for lasting impact in Sarpy and Cass counties and to give opportunities to organizations and individuals to pursue their charitable goals. We accomplish this mission through our grants, discretionary giving and match programs and the establishment of charitable funds.

MCF’s Board of Directors is comprised of 22 members who reside or work in Sarpy and/or Cass counties. Each brings a high degree of involvement, valuable insight, and guidance to MCF and its focus to assist with community development by improving and enhancing the quality of life for the residents of Sarpy and Cass counties.

MCF hosts two annual fundraising events that benefit Sarpy and Cass counties, the MCF Golf Tournament and the Reflection Ball. Net proceeds from both events help fund our bi-annual grants program, which provides an opportunity for not-for profit charitable organizations to secure financial assistance to help support their missions.

MCF prides itself on being a trusted, compassionate and permanent community resource for those who have received grants from us and who have created charitable funds. With our bi-annual grants program, monthly discretionary gifts, and charitable funds, we contributed more than $2.8 million to charitable causes in our last fiscal year.

HOW WE ARE MAKING AN IMPACT American Midwest Ballet (AMB) plays a key role in the cultural vitality of our region, inspiring people through our expressive performing artists, skilled teachers, and stunning productions. Our talented dancers hail from around the nation, and we perform at the Orpheum Theater, Hoff Family Arts and Culture Center, and on tour.

At AMB, we live our commitment that dance is for everyone, working with more than 100 schools and 30 community partners to bring dance to people across our community.

Our school matinee performances reach over 7,500 area students each year; students from Title I schools are offered free admission and transportation to remove barriers to attendance. AMB also provides over 1,000 complimentary tickets each season to people in need in our community. These are our neighbors: foster kids, individuals with disabilities, patients with cancer, and families experiencing financial difficulty. We work with a fantastic roster of community engagement partners, including Boys Town, Heartland Family Service, Girls Inc., Micah House, Autism Action Partnership, the Ollie Webb Center, and more.

HOW WE ARE MAKING AN IMPACT We support our community in so many ways with our six philanthropic programs. We provide teddy bears to children in crisis situations, school clothes to children in need, books to support literacy in our community, clothing and toiletry kits for assault survivors, and we encourage and support women recovering from addiction and also teen parents still in high school. A highlight this year was to mark the milestone of clothing the 80,000th child at Operation School Bell with coverage by two local TV stations. Our financial condition continues to do well with gifts from many generous donors and the receipt of much appreciated grants. We have also been blessed with a beautiful Chapter House and Thrift Shop that for the second year in a row was voted Number One in the Omaha Choice Awards in the Category of Thrift Shops/Consignment Shops. The Thrift Shop has been so successful that it averages $19,000 a month. The Christmas Caravan, our largest fundraiser, netted over $110,000, a record year!

For 15 years, Autism Action Partnership has served the needs of the autism community through programs and services that address critical gaps in care. The diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) continues to grow, worldwide and locally, with 1 in 36 children diagnosed, a rate which has doubled since our organization began in 2008.

Autism Action Partnership provides opportunities for supportive services that address a variety of basic life needs for autistic individuals and their families and remains dedicated to working with community partners to create a more inclusive environment to allow the autism community to thrive.

In 2023, we launched our COMPASS training program to grow inclusion efforts in our community by educating the general public, which increases acceptance and understanding of the autism community.

Before we make a match, we do our homework. After someone expresses an interest in becoming a Big, they go through an extensive background check and careful interview process. Then, we match Bigs and Littles based on location, personalities, and preferences. And we provide full support from the start so that matches can grow into lasting and fruitful friendships.

Our Programs Start Something: Research has shown that positive relationships between Littles and their Bigs have a direct and measurable impact on children's lives. By partnering with parents/guardians, volunteers, and others in the community, Littles are more likely to maintain or improve their emotions, decrease risky behaviors, improve their confidence in school, and maintain or improve their grades.

• Volunteer as a Big Brother, Big Sister, Big Couple For only a few hours, a couple times a month, you can give a Little Brother or Little Sister the invaluable gift of your friendship.

Organizations sometimes need help navigating important, complex topics or potentially controversial current events with their workforce, customers, and the community. The Business Ethics Alliance is an Omaha-grown, unique ethics initiative that serves organizations and individuals of all sizes and people in all industries in the Greater Omaha community.

We can create forums for tough conversations unlike anyone else in the community because organizations and individuals trust us. Everything the Alliance does promotes an environment where discussion and practice of ethics are encouraged and expected in our local community. Our programming is renowned throughout the community, and our ethics products and services focus on the positive and practical aspects of ethics education through our large Signature Events, individual workshops, continuing education, and consulting. In 2022, over 350 people attended EthicSpace, our conference devoted solely to current ethical topics. Our Walk the Talk Podcast has reached over 2500 listeners all over the world—40+ countries and 210+ separate cities across six continents. In 2023 we launched The Suite Life where we talk ethics one on one with area C-suite executives. We also launched our Ethical Leadership Program for college and university students to develop ethical leaders as they begin professional career journeys. The Alliance's brand of ethics education is impartial, research-based, and respectful. Always.

Mission Drivers support the Alliance's overall strategic efforts, provide critical infrastructure resources, and ensure our work's long-term sustainability through significant investments in the Alliance. Trustee Partners act as ambassadors, supporters, and advisors of the Alliance’s mission.

Children’s Nebraska is the only full-service pediatric health care center in Nebraska, providing expertise in more than 50 pediatric specialty services to children across a five-state region and beyond. The center will feature 38 inpatient hospital beds, a pediatric mental health urgent care center, a first-in-the-region behavioral health emergency assessment center, an expanded partial hospitalization program and a pediatric primary care clinic with outpatient mental health services.

HOW WE ARE MAKING AN IMPACT Children Square U.S.A is a private, not-for-profit organization founded on December 23, 1882, and incorporated on March 16, 1883. Founded as the Council Bluffs Home of the Friendless, the name changed to Christian Home Association in 1894. The name was changed to Christian Home AssociationChildren’s Square U.S.A. in 1986.

Children’s Square U.S.A. has a rich history of caring for children from birth to 21 and their families, meeting their individualized needs, instilling hope and helping restore lives. Our mission is: “Building a bright future for children and families.” We do this by teaching, every day, the values and life skills essential to a successful life — one full of caring, contribution and commitment.

Empowering each with: The Vision to See — and the value of setting an ideal for which to reach; The Courage to Try — and the value of accepting each obstacle as a challenge to meet; and The Will to Succeed — and the value of making the commitment to persevere.”

Children’s Square U.S.A. serves over 1,000 children and families in Iowa and Nebraska. Services include early childhood care and education programs; an on-campus, Iowa Department of Education-approved special education program for grades 1-12; community mental health services (outpatient); children’s emergency shelter services; recruitment, training and support of foster families, adoptive families, and relative homes; supervision of children placed into foster care; psychiatric residential treatment for children with moderate to severe mental health diagnoses; aftercare services and support for youth who have aged or are aging out of foster/group care; patient centered, coordinated care for children with a serious emotional disturbance (SED); and supportive in-home interventions and skills building for youth and families.

Children’s Square U.S.A. is fully licensed and accredited.

The annual operating budget for 2023 was $8,974,984.

The annual distribution of 150 high-quality car seats to new and expectant mothers and their infants relieves a substantial financial burden for young families and enables them to safely transport their children.

3. The funding and distribution of significant academic scholarships ($5,000 and $2,500) for mothers pursuing post-secondary education opportunities. We partner with agencies and schools that provide the support systems for these mothers to be successful.

We currently fund $200,000 annually in scholarships.

Armed with degrees, our scholars are securing jobs that provide them and their families with financial independence and stability.

4. A literacy program to build essential reading skills and enhance academic achievement is being piloted.

The current pilot phase consists of a book vending machine installed at Westgate Elementary School, providing access to book ownership for low-income students. In addition, Christ Child Omaha volunteers read to classrooms several times a year.

Access to opportunities is not distributed equally across our community. Many have limited access to nutritious food, mental health services, and/or experiences that broaden the mind and spark the imagination. We feel we have a mandate to not forget about “the least of these.” That is a reference from a parable Jesus taught. Today we might say, “don’t forget about those falling through the cracks.” These are the people we want to impact the most because they need the greatest amount of help.

• Donate or shop at our Sequels Thrift Store at 1836 Madison Ave, Council Bluffs • Become a corporate sponsor or plan to attend our upcoming Concert of Hope fundraiser with Russ Taff.

• Donate household items for our Housing Helps CB initiative.

• Become a monthly financial partner, ensuring we can continue to help those in need.

Up to 300 women a year come through the criminal justice system in Council Bluffs and upon release, a number of them will find themselves living back on the streets. The current recidivism rate for women ex-offenders in America is 70%. We provide weekly support groups, distribute bicycles, and work to secure housing if necessary. It’s our goal to surround her with so much support and love that her last offense will be her last offense.

The homeless count in Council Bluffs at this time is approximately 250—300 people and half of these are women. Currently in our city, there is not an emergency women’s shelter that someone could walk into tonight for shelter. We are diligently working with other social service agencies to identify and house these vulnerable women. Half of those we have helped in our Housing Helps program have been women coming off the streets or out of shelters.

Our outreach teams serve over 700 meals a month to those struggling in poverty.

Our Leadership:

Horses Help SWI is a brand-new equine therapy center with its sights set high to help those in need reach their full potential. Our herd of 12 horses is ready to assist clients no matter whether they are riding, performing groundwork exercises, helping drive a cart pulled by a horse or learning other life skills on the ranch. Our location nestled in the beautiful Loess Hills provides over 20 acres where one can reflect, learn new skills, and grow physically, mentally and in spirit. Classes taught in our indoor arena, outdoor open-air arena and brand-new Round Pen (the only one like it in the state of Iowa), along with sensory trails offer plenty of space for personal improvement. Nature is a wonderful healer. Combining that with the power of horses and their intuitive ability to read human emotions creates a powerful tool. Horses help encourage humans to be open-minded, calm and aware of their surroundings, therefore fostering growth in a variety of ways. Our busy, hectic lives and schedules yearn for a chance to breathe, collect our thoughts and connect with one another on a higher level. Horses can provide the conduit for those experiencing anxiety, depression, learning difficulties or physical limitations to heal in ways meaningful to their individual journey.

Giving Opportunities Horses Help SWI, Inc is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that relies on the generosity of our

community to help those in need. Session fees cover a small portion of the cost to operate the ranch, such as staff, utilities, equipment, overall maintenance, horse feed and veterinary care. Donations can be made via cash, check, credit card, PayPal and through our website.

Annually, programs benefit over 1,400 children across North and South Omaha via two core programs: Early Childhood Education and Out-of-School programs.

Volunteer Opportunities

For children 6 weeks to 5 years old, the Early Childhood Education program prepares children to be ready and successful in school. Kids Can is proud to be one of only three Omaha centers with the highest rating awarded by the Department of Education in the Nebraska Step Up to Quality Program.

For children 5 to 13 years old, Out-of-School programs offer a variety of opportunities. The new center at 4768 Q Street offers programs including mentoring, before school, after school, full-day programs when school is closed, and an uninterrupted summer program. Kids Can also runs eight school-based sites at Mandela, Miller Park, Minne Lusa, Wakonda, Gilder, Benson West, Conestoga Magnet, and Druid Hill Elementary Schools, and a second summer program in Miller Park Pavilion.

In October 2016, Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals opened a 110-bed comprehensive post-acute care hospital in Omaha. Madonna's Omaha Campus serves some of the nation's most complex patients discharging from trauma care hospitals and other tertiary care hospitals from across the metro and nation. Since opening its doors, the Omaha Campus has served patients from every hospital system in the metro area and patients from 41 different states.

In March 2021, Madonna also opened a Physicians Clinic at the Omaha Campus.

Simply put: Madonna is world-class rehabilitation specializing in serving patients with brain trauma, spinal cord injuries, stroke, cancer, neurological diseases, severe pulmonary conditions and post-COVID-19. Madonna offers a combination of expert healthcare providers and clinicians, cutting-edge rehabilitation technology and state-of-the-art research to help children and adults with disabilities reach their highest level of independence.

Additionally, Madonna's vision to establish a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) department and residency program with the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) became a reality in 2018. This is the only PM&R residency program in Nebraska and in a five-state upper Midwest region.

Make-A-Wish creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. We are on a quest to bring every eligible child’s wish to life, because a wish is an integral part of a child’s treatment journey. Research shows children who have wishes granted can build the physical and emotional strength they need to fight a critical illness. Wishes are the driving force behind all we do because, simply put, wish experiences transform lives. Not only do wishes impact our wish kids, but they also have far-reaching, positive impacts on wish families and local communities. There are few experiences more powerful than making a wish come true.

Make-A-Wish Nebraska serves the entire state of Nebraska with headquarters in Omaha and satellite offices in Lincoln and Kearney. Our goal is to reach every eligible child in Nebraska.

Thanks to the incredible support of the local community, Make-A-Wish Nebraska has granted more than 3,000 wishes across the state over the past 40 years. On average, we grant between 115 and 120 wishes per year.

Scouting is a youth-led, youth-run program, but the youth must be trained to be leaders. The average Scout volunteer gives 20 hours of service each month, and 96 percent of volunteers say they would recommend volunteering for the BSA to other adults.

HOW WE ARE MAKING AN IMPACT Muddy Paws not only rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes companion animals, but also created and maintains several outreach programs that help pet owners in the community provide veterinary care, food, supplies, and enrichment opportunities for their pets that they might not otherwise have been able to afford. This reduces the number of pets needing to be rehomed or euthanized because no other options are available to the pet owner.

Muddy Paws holds free distemper/parvo vaccination clinics monthly in underserved neighborhoods of the community in an effort to reduce the cases of the often deadly parvovirus for owners who may not have easy access to the vaccination. This reduces the number of dogs contracting the disease and dying, or needing to be euthanized, because owners are unable to afford the costly treatment. Muddy Paws also offers free or reduced rate cat and dog training to help owners work through the behavioral issues their pets are experiencing, keeping pets in the homes of owners and reducing the number of pets being surrendered and needing to be rehomed.

Our Leadership:

The Nebraska Humane Society provides both sheltering services and animal control to Omaha metro area pets and pet owners in need. We offer shelter to animals who have no place to call home and provide vital services to them and to the people who love them.

Every year some 20,000 animals find their way through our doors. We return all we can to their owners. To those pets not claimed we offer temporary sanctuary, medical care, behavioral support and evaluation for adoption.

Our owner support programs include a free pet food pantry, pet food deliveries for homebound owners, free behavioral help, fostering pets of domestic violence victims, limited financial help for medical issues, and assistance to help with rehoming animals. We annually touch the lives of more than 200,000 people with our message of compassion and humane treatment for all living creatures. We are housed on a 13-acre campus with four buildings, 170 dedicated staff members and 500 volunteers. Individuals and families often come to OHB in a state of crisis, but with the life-changing programs and services offered at OHB, they are able to grow to become self-sufficient, productive individuals, making the community we all share a more thriving place to live, work and play.

Omaha Performing Arts (O-pa) is dedicated to creating a vibrant arts and entertainment experience in Omaha and the larger region. O-pa has grown to become the largest arts institution in Nebraska and consistently ranks among the top venues in the country and world. More than 5 and a half million visitors have experienced world-class Broadway, jazz, dance, family and popular performances at the Holland Center and Orpheum Theater. O-pa’s latest venue, Steelhouse Omaha, opened in May 2023, offering a space for local artists and attracting national performers who traditionally skipped over Omaha on their tours.

As a national health center quality leader, OneWorld is recognized for excellence in providing medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy and support services. Our team of board-certified clinicians combine state-of-theart practices into an integrated model of health care to provide whole person care.

OneWorld is continually expanding our services and clinical locations to ensure that our patients have access to quality care. In 2023, OneWorld increased access to care for youth and adolescents by opening our first pediatric dental clinic and partnering with Millard South High School to provide on-site traditional behavioral health services for adolescents. These efforts to increase access to care for youth are further supported through OneWorld's five School-Based Health Centers and Medical Mobile Clinic. At OneWorld, each patient is screened for social determinants of health to help address other barriers outside of health care, such as transportation, food insecurity, poverty and discrimintation, that influence every patient's health.

At the OneWorld Pharmacy, the innovative multi-dose packaging program is setting patients up for success to take their medications correctly and improve their health outcomes.

Simply stated, we help cultivate tomorrow's workforce through academic support, postsecondary exploration, and career readiness.

Today, P4K serves more than 3,000 students, prekindergarten through postsecondary education, growing up in under-resourced neighborhoods. At no cost to students or their families, P4K helps youth to develop hope and trust, both of which are critical to a young person’s ability to plan for the future. Partnership 4 Kids is strengthening the community by providing students access to academic support, postsecondary preparation, career exploration opportunities and professional skill-building workshops. We aim to transform the future of Omaha through educational advancement and student success.

Restored Wings is a nonprofit organization committed to providing hope and restoration to individuals who have been trafficked and sexually exploited in Nebraska and throughout the country. We empower survivors of human trafficking to lead healthy and independent lives. Restored Wings assists in the prevention of future human trafficking by providing a trauma-informed short and long-term housing recovery program while helping to restore their physical, emotional, and spiritual health.

We have many volunteer opportunities. Bring a group to do yard work, paint, landscaping, build, or clean up the properties. We need volunteer mentors, educators, class or group leaders, animal caretakers, groundskeepers, committee members, and equine therapists.

HOW WE ARE MAKING AN IMPACT Santa Monica provides a full continuum of care that partners with women on their journey to recovery. Our model thoughtfully steps women down through four levels of care that decrease in intensity and increase in independence. Women under the Santa Monica umbrella of care can be with us for up to two years as they gain stabilization mentally, emotionally, socially and physically. Our programs utilize evidence based curriculum combined with strength based therapeutic approaches. Studies show that the longer women remain in a structured and accountable setting, they have an exponentially increased chance for long-term sobriety. We provide a home-like setting that allows for a gradual reunification with loved ones, creation of a new sober foundation of support, and practice implementing life skills on a daily basis. These are all integral pieces of the journey to recovery. At Santa Monica we embrace a holistic experience, so we are treating all areas of the women's lives, not just the substance misuse, mental health and trauma. A dedicated, professional and passionate team of staff see their work with the women as an opportunity, not a job. The ripple effect of impact made carries from Santa Monica to the farthest reaches of our community. This

SJA is a 15-acre ranch in Murray, Nebraska, that serves as home to over 60 rescued animals. These animals are trained as therapy animals. In spite of the fact that many of these animals were formerly abused or neglected, they do not judge our us by our intellect or appearance.

Most volunteers assist with caring for the animals.

However, other areas of need for help are with carpentry, landscaping, gardening, maintenance, cleaning, cooking, errands, administration, gathering, cutting and splitting wood for winter, assistance with youth who come to the ranch, fencing, electrical, plumbing. We are open to consider any other skills or experience visitors may have to offer.

Stephen Center, located in South Omaha, serves a highly vulnerable population with acute physical, behavioral and mental health issues in the metropolitan area. This population ranges from homeless men, women, and children to individuals suffering from mental illness and/or addiction.

Stephen Center operates the community’s only “recovery housing” projects which are defined by HUD as “housing models that utilize substance use-specific services, peer support, and physical design features to support individuals and families on a particular path to recovery from addiction”.

Services are provided through three distinct, CARF accredited programs: Pettigrew Emergency Shelter, Permanent Supportive Housing apartments and the HERO Substance Abuse Treatment program.

Stephen Center’s goal is to increase housing stability for Pettigrew Emergency Shelter and Permanent Supportive Housing clients with a focus on supportive services, case management, therapeutic and crisis intervention services to address critical mental health, addiction and housing issues of clients. These services lead to the stabilization necessary to work toward and achieve permanent housing destinations for clients.

HOW WE ARE MAKING AN IMPACT The Salvation Army of Omaha is a faith-based nonprofit organization. Its three community centers — Omaha Citadel Corps, Omaha North Corps and the Omaha Kroc Center — as well as the Burrows Center and Renaissance Village, are uniquely situated to meet the diverse needs of our metro-area neighborhoods. The Salvation Army is often the last resort for thousands of the most vulnerable people in the metro area. The need is extremely high right now as the ongoing inflation crisis further stretches families' budgets for basics such as food, clothing and gas. The organization sustains the bodies, minds and spirits of our most vulnerable neighbors through its core programs: food and material assistance, youth development, housing, behavioral health, older adult services, anti-human trafficking and emergency disaster services.

Visiting Nurse Association provides healthcare and supportive services to people who are uninsured, under-resourced, and otherwise unable to access care. We provide care wherever people in our community call home: for some, that is a homeless shelter or domestic violence shelter; for others, it is low-income housing, multi-generational homes, or homes where one has lived the majority of their adulthood and, with our help, can remain there. By serving people in their homes, VNA observes issues that co-exist with physical health, including food insecurity, etc. Our team goes where others don't, serves who others won't, and sees what others might not see in a clinical healthcare setting.
