I am proud to be leading Met Film School into its second decade, as we endeavour to nurture a new generation of storytellers and technicians who are professional enough to impress a competitive industry and free enough to feed its creative heartbeat. 81%* of graduates from our undergraduate programmes are working across the creative industries, in a broad range of freelance and permanent roles. Over the last two years they have written, directed or produced five commercially-released feature films and are working in organisations at the centre of the film and television industries in the UK and internationally. Our student body is diverse. Of our 2013-14 intake on full-time programmes, 44% are from the UK, 31% are from Europe, and 25% are from the rest of the world. 43% are female. We have awarded Voices that Matter scholarships to students from the UK, Palestine, Israel, Gaza, the USA, Uganda, and South Africa. Filmmaking can only be learnt by making films. At Met Film School Berlin you will be creating films from day one, in the most practical and immediate way possible. With a hands-on approach you will write, direct and edit your own films, whilst also enjoying the strong support that comes from collaborative teamwork. Our tutors, drawn from around the world, are all industry professionals whose passion and experience will guide you through every step of the filmmaking process. We give you the time, resources and support to discover what you want to say in the language of film. Based at BUFA Studios, the school is located in one of the key hubs of Berlin’s artistic communities and at the heart of a vibrant, busy working studio. To date, Met Film School Berlin has attracted a wonderfully diverse mix of international students with many different nationalities, cultures and creative approaches in every single class. As a result, the vital process of building a strong and supportive network in the worldwide filmmaking community can start right here. Born in 2003 First 8-week course takes place in Clapham, London. 2005 Move into Ealing Studios, London. First unaccredited one-year course begins. Met Film acquires post-production business. 2006 Met Film launches production business. 2007 25 students enrol on first BA programme validated by the then TVU (now known as University of West London). 2009 BA Practical Filmmaking launches with 119 enrolments. Meanwhile, Met Film Production’s Little Ashes and French Film are released in the UK and other territories. 2010 Teddy Cherim and Kees van Nieuwkerk’s graduation film, Sterke Verhalen (Tall Stories), is released in 34 cities across Holland and Belgium. Met Film Production’s The Infidel opens in over 40 territories. 2011 Egill Kristbjornsson’s graduation film, Paper, premieres at Tribeca alongside Met Film Production’s Donor Unknown, which is then released in cinemas in the UK. 2012 Met Film School Berlin opens. Met Film Production’s Town of Runners, conceived and co-produced by graduate Dan Demissie, opens in Tribeca and is released in cinemas in the UK by Dogwoof. Another Met Film School student, Perry Bhandal, sees his film, Interview with a Hitman, released by Kaleidoscope – a year after he pitched the idea at the school. 2013 There were commercial releases in the UK for Project Wild Thing (graduate, David Bond), and in UK and Germany for Papadopoulos and Sons (graduate, Marcus Markou) and in France for White Lie (graduate, Nyima Cartier). Also, Ross Domoney’s graduation film, The High Price of Gold, wins top prize at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival. Met Film Berlin launch sponsorship of the Madagascar Film Festival and Interfilm Short Film Festival 2014 Graduate Chika Anadu wins best feature film for B for Boy at the Africa Movie Academy Awards. BA graduate Assaf Machnes wins Best Short Film Awards at the Jerusalem Jewish Film Festival, Quinta Praia International Film Festival, Youki International Youth Film Festival, 20 MinMax Film Festival and the Sehsüchte International Film Festival. Rusanna Danielian, a One-Year (Cert HE) Practical Filmmaking student at Met Film School Berlin, won ‘Most Kissable Lips’ competition held by pharmaceutical company Devirex with her short film “Lipstick.”
ABOUT MET FILM SCHOOL BERLIN Met Film School opened its doors to budding filmmakers over ten years ago, and following its success the school decided to launch a second campus in Berlin – right at the heart of European independent filmmaking. Met Film School Berlin embodies exactly the same ethos as the London School, offering an intensive practical filmmaking experience taught by industry professionals in an active film studio. Students are able to feel completely integrated within the Berlin filmmaking community, working in an environment that is steeped in cinematic and filmmaking history. Classes are primarily delivered in English, in accordance with the school’s accreditation with the University of West London, the top modern university in London for employment. Met Film School Berlin is based at BUFA; the studio that has been home to film productions since the Weimar Republic and is one of the oldest film studios in Europe. The school’s location enables students to have first-hand experience of a working film studio on a day-to-day basis, and also places them in the heart of the city. Met Film School Berlin is also a desirable destination for non-EU students seeking the flexibility to work whilst studying. It’s possible for overseas students to work 180 half days per year (four hours a day) whilst studying in Germany.

LIVING IN BERLIN
Berlin’s charm lies in its unique landscape and undeniably diverse culture, with its world-class museums, art galleries, restaurants and nightspots. Eating out can be an inexpensive affair for Berliners with an array of international cuisine readily available. Try the national dish “Currywurst’’, Russian delicacies, Vietnamese dishes or authentic middle-eastern falafel from the many street vendors. If you’re feeling flush then head to upscale Berlin restaurants Grill Royale and Fischers Fritz which are star-spotting hot spots during the Berlinale! Take in the sun during the summer months and chill out at Beach Bar on the River Spree, picnic in the Tiergarten, or take a refreshing swim in one of the various lakes. For those looking for a slightly quirkier experience test out your vocal cords with Mauer Park’s Karaoke on Sunday afternoons.

GETTING AROUND THE CITY
The city is made up of 12 districts each one with its own distinct personality. Most Met Film students choose to live in the trendy districts of Kreuzberg and Neukölln. Kreuzberg is Berlin’s most populous district and is a multi-cultural hub of bohemian culture. Bar Raval, a great Spanish “New Wave” bar and restaurant co-owned by actor Daniel Brühl (star of Goodbye Lenin) is a fashionable hangout spot for Kreuzberg locals who want an affordable evening out overlooking Görlitzer Park. Kreuzberg is also home to Würgeengel (the name comes from art-house movie classic “El angel exterminador” by Luis Buñuel, 1962), a colourful and vibrant venue with a lively atmosphere. Neighbouring downtown district Neukölln is home to Berlin’s most unconventional opera house, the Neuköllner Oper, and hosts an array of interesting old building quarters, which gives the area its vibrant urban history.
Covering nearly 341 square miles, it would be impossible to explore the whole city by foot. Fortunately, Berlin has one of the most extensive, efficient and affordable transport networks of any European city. The Underground (U-bahn), the overground Schnellbahn (S-bahn) and Ringbahn provide comprehensive access to most parts of Berlin and run through the night on weekends. In addition, there is an extensive network of trams and buses including the number 100 and 200 buses which offer a cheap alternative to a sight-seeing tour as they take in most of Berlin’s major tourist attractions. Taxis are also easy to find and not too expensive. Berlin is littered with taxi ranks and there is even an app to hail one too! (TaxiBerlin) For people looking to explore areas slightly further afield, the state-of-the-art and architecturally stunning Hauptbahnhof provides access to Germany’s world-class network of national and international train lines. And getting to and from Berlin by plane couldn’t be easier with two international airports Tegel, located very close to the city centre and Schönefeld just south of the city - and a further brand-new airport, Brandenberg airport due to open soon (though perhaps best not to ask a local when this will be!)

BERLIN’S FILM CULTURE
Berlin is an exciting, cosmopolitan cultural hub that continues to attract filmmakers and artists from around the world. Berlin has a strong TV, film and creative start-up community that together make up a professional workforce of over 300,000. For filmmakers, Berlin’s ability to offer strong financial incentives to international productions has made it a central player in the global market. Films produced in the Berlin - Brandenberg region have ranged from low-budget independent movies to blockbusters such as “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2”, Stephen Daldry’s “The Reader”, Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Basterds” and last year’s popular release “The Monuments Men” directed by George Clooney.
STUDENT FILMMAKING
The Berlinale is one of the top international film festivals in Europe and the well-respected Berlinale Talent Campus has included discussions by key film figures such as Jane Campion, Michel Gondry and Gael Garcia Bernal. Met Film School students are encouraged to make the most of this illustrious festival by attending the events on offer, which bring high profile professionals attending the Berlinale to workshops and discussions with 300 promising young film talents from all over the world. The talents profit from the experience of the professionals, who in turn gain fresh ideas from taking part and actively networking within the filmmaking community. Met Film School sponsors the Interfilm Short Film Festival, which hosts special events and programmes in cinemas across Berlin. Interfilm has established itself as one of the most important short film festivals in Europe. It is the second oldest German short film festival (after Oberhausen), and is recognised as the second most significant and oldest international film festival in Berlin after the Berlinale. More than 7000 films are submitted each year to the festival, including shorts made by Met Film School students.
FEATURE FILM
At Met Film School Berlin students write, direct and edit their own films. In their last year of the BA (Hons) Practical Filmmaking programme, students work towards producing a feature film. In 2013, students developed a fictional script, drawing from experiences gained as a result of their filmmaking education and international backgrounds. The creative process was guided by Swedish Writer/Director and Met Film tutor Maria von Heland. All students had collaborative input into the way the story was produced and told. The final result is a unique narrative set in Berlin called “I Am Warm”, which features a range of global influences. SHORT FILMS
In addition to the array of films our students make on their programmes, we actively encourage them to get involved in making short films outside of their course of study, either by working on their own personal projects or by engaging with the filmmaking community through the creation of content for a range of different platforms, competitions and festivals. Rusanna Danielian, a One-Year (Cert HE) Practical Filmmaking student at Met Film School Berlin, recently won a competition held by pharmaceutical company Devirex with her short film “Lipstick.” This film will now be used globally to advertise their cold sore prevention product Lipivir®.

Met Film School London opened it’s doors to budding filmmakers eleven years ago, establishing the school as London’s leading provider of practical filmmaking courses. The school is part of the Met Film Group, which also includes Met Film Production and Met Film Post. This enterprise allows Met Film to make films, teach people the skills that they need to make films and offer postproduction services to filmmakers, keeping them completely integrated within the film Industry.
London has been the backdrop to an enormous range of films, from the Swinging streets of Alfie to the contemporary Harry Potter movies. When Film London was set up in 2004, filming in the capital rose by 30% making the city the third busiest filming production centre in the world, with over thirty crews shooting on its streets every day. Producers are now choosing to have their films made in the city due to the world-class facilities on offer. It has never been more exciting to study filmmaking in London.

Met Film School London follows the exact same ethos as the Berlin school. On most of the courses offered, students will write, produce, direct and edit their own short films and fully engage with the art of collaborative filmmaking. The school’s tutors are all working industry professionals from the world of TV, feature films and commercial filmmaking. Met Film School offers a wide range of filmmaking courses including undergraduate and postgraduate courses. In addition, it offers just under 40 short and part-time courses spanning directing, cinematography, screenwriting, producing and postproduction for adults and young people alike.
Met Film School London is based at the world-famous Ealing Studios in West London. Ealing Studios has a rich and important history and is the oldest continually operating studio in the world, still producing a number of feature films today. Making feature films since 1902, it is perhaps best known for its Ealing Comedies of the 1940s and 1950s, including The Ladykillers and The Lavender Hill Mob. In recent years Ealing Studios has been used for high-profile productions such as Downton Abbey, The Two Faces of January, Frankenstein, My Week with Marilyn, Prince of Persia, Burke and Hare, Star Wars: Episode Two, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, The Importance of Being Ernest, Notting Hill and Woody Allen’s Wasp. Met Film School’s facilities include one of Ealing Studios’ original sound stages as part of its on-site studio space.
Students in London are able to experience one of the most diverse cities in the world, where more than 300 languages are spoken and a wealth of different cultures live side by side. Students will be taught filmmaking in an artistic and creative environment, steeped in cinematic history. There are now over 50 film festivals hosted in the city. Met Film School is not just a film school, its part of an enterprise that makes films, teaches people the skills needed to make films and offers postproduction services to the industry.

Currently its production company Met Film Production is in postproduction on two films, Jim Loach’s second feature which was shot in Australia in March 2013 and the documentary How To Change The World which is backed by the BFI and Sky. During 2013 it released Village at the End of the World and The Great Hip Hop Hoax, which premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival. In 2012 Met Film Production’s Town of Runners, conceived and co-produced by graduate Dan Demissie and post-produced by Met Film Post, opened at the Tribeca Film Festival and was seen by audiences around the world. Is a cinematographer and director who has worked in the film industry for almost 25 years. She shot two BAFTAnominated short films and has both directed and shot feature length projects for cinema and TV. Her credits include Going Down, I Am From Nowhere and Michael Nyman In Progress.
RALPH NETZER
Director of photography with nearly 20-years experience working on feature films, TV series, documentaries and various art installations. His cinema credits include Silent Waters, 3 Chinesen mit dem Kontrabass, Ritterinnen and Endstation Sehnsüchte.

Born in Berlin, Julia has produced and directed documentaries for TV and cinema, corporate films and music videos including The Ferryman and his wife, Porgy & Me and Seitfenster. She has been a jury member for media prizes, a host for media talks and a Met Film School Berlin tutor since 2013.
ALASDAIR REID
Is a composer for film and television from the UK. He won the VW Score Prize at the Berlin Film Festival 2006. His credits include the BAFTA-winning documentary Mummifying Alan and the major BBC Television series WW2 – Behind Closed Doors.
DAN CHISHOLM
Is a director of commercials, pop-promos and drama working out of London and Berlin. Prizes include the Diamond Award at the California Film Awards and Best Music Video at Los Angeles Film Festival of Hollywood.
ATHANASIOS KARANIKOLAS CLARISSA NEWMAN
Is a Greek-born Berlin based filmmaker. Working as director, producer and editor, his feature film credits include Echolot which premiered at the 2013 Berlinale, Elli Makra and 42277 Wuppertal.
JAN BAUER
Writes and directs for film and television in the UK as well as in Germany. His work has won awards from the Royal Television Society, the Kino Film Festival Manchester and others. Jan’s screenplay for Stray Dogs was nominated for the German Scriptwriting Award 2008/9.

Met Film Production also worked with Swiss pharma company Devirex, who were launching a new blister preventing lipstick called Lipivir. Students were invited to submit films around the theme of “kissable lips”. Berlin School One-Year Practical Filmmaking student Rusanna Danielian won the competition and her film will now be used as a commercial for Lipivir. Films made by runners-up from the London School, BA (Hons) Practical Filmmaking student Isabel Saven and MA, Business and Producing student Katelyn Connerty will also be used for promotional purposes.
FESTIVALS MET GO Festivals was launched to help students navigate the festival and commercial world of film to maximise opportunities for their films. It provides information and advice to students and graduates on film festival strategy. In addition, a selection of films are identified annually that are seen to have uniquely strong opportunities to succeed critically or commercially, and have their festival strategy directly managed by the Met GO Festivals team. OUR LOCATION
BUFA Created in 1917, UFA was a government-owned producer of propaganda films. UFA’s studios (Babelsberg and the now-called BUFA) were considered to be the most modern in the world. The studios employed important directors, such as Ernst Lubitsch, famous for directing sophisticated comedies, and G.W. Pabst, a pioneer in the expressive use of camera position and editing techniques. The appetite for films was huge and UFA productions expanded from the political to the more creative. UFA was key to the German Expressionist movement, funding works by acclaimed directors such as Fritz Lang and F.W. Murnau. With the move away from silent movies, UFA literally built a roof on their previously glassed-top studios and launched into a new era of filmmaking. One of the many films they produced was Marlene Dietrich’s first “talkie” The Blue Angel (1930). Challenging the power of Hollywood, UFA made films for the European market in German, French and English.

Today, BUFA is an active film studio whose stages offer a wealth of filming experiences – greenscreen, live-TV studio set up, a standing set used for TV production and a large stage for commercial use. The studio is home to various industryrelevant companies including inhouse production companies, a camera / lighting rental house, a film & TV prop house, a scenery and set construction company and post-production facilities. MA PROGRAMMES Met Film School Berlin will be launching MA programmes in Directing and Screenwriting in October 2015. These programmes will aim to provide students with practical work-relevant skills, with teaching delivered by industry professional tutors.
The programmes will be divided into six 20-credit modules followed by a 60-credit module. They will complete a portfolio of filmmaking projects, plus a final master’s project. They will attend a series of lectures, screenings, seminars, practicebased exercises and workshops, as well as work independently to produce projects for their portfolio, demonstrating craft and creativity to an advanced degree. In addition, students will be required to conduct scholarly research within their chosen programme as the basis of critical and reflective written work that links to their filmmaking practice. Students will also receive one-to-one tutorial support throughout the year.

The programme takes directors through the process of production from script to screen focusing on the core elements of visual language, narrative storytelling and performance. BA (HONS) PRACTICAL FILMMAKING The goal of this programme is to give students an in-depth practical understanding of the key aspects of the filmmaking process over an intensive twoyear period. It allows them to gain comprehensive training in a range of key skills including writing, directing, producing, editing and professional industry practice. In addition, students will develop a critical awareness of film history, movements, genres and contemporary filmmaking styles. In year-one, students study three fifteen-week modules. The first module is Foundations in Filmmaking, which introduces them to key filmmaking techniques; including the writing process, directing actors, camera, lighting and sound practices and editing content. This is followed by Making Short Films, which brings together the key skills learned in Foundations in Filmmaking allowing students to create a short narrative film. The final first year module is Professional Practice, which explores current and evolving models in film, TV and new media. In year-two, students study a further three fifteenweek modules. They start with Crafting Narratives, which covers an exploration of film genres. This is followed by Feature Filmmaking, which allows students to further develop advanced filmmaking skills and work as part of a large production team to produce a low budget feature film. Finally the programme ends with the BA Graduation module. This involves students undertaking a major research project where they can independently or in teams make either a short film in a genre of their choosing or opt to develop a feature film script.

PRACTICAL FILMMAKING DIPLOMA (DIP HE)

This 16-month programme is aimed at students who wish to have an immersive and highly practical filmmaking experience. Those studying this programme make short films and their own documentary, as well as collaborate on a project for the small screen. In addition, they develop an understanding of film history, film movements and genre. All students also receive further training in screenwriting and genre filmmaking. Students who successfully pass all modules will receive a Diploma of Higher Education.
This 45-week programme provides students with an immersive filmmaking experience and, for those students who pass all modules, culminates in the award of a Certificate of Higher Education. Students make short films as well as collaborate on a project for the small screen. In addition, they develop an understanding of film history, film movements and genre.
In year one, students study three fifteen-week modules. The first module is Foundations in Filmmaking, which introduces them to key filmmaking techniques; including the writing process, directing actors, camera, lighting and sound practices and editing content and culminates with each student making their own narrative short film. This is followed by Making Short Films, which brings together the key skills learned in Foundations in Filmmaking, allowing students to create a second short narrative film. The final first year module is Professional Practice, which explores current and evolving models in film, TV and new media. In year-two, students study one fifteen-week module called Crafting Narratives, which covers an exploration of film genres plus further development of directing, writing and editing skills. Diploma students will also complete a graduation project during this module. When students graduate from this programme they will be proficient in producing, screenwriting, editing, directing actors and will be able to fulfil a variety of key production crew roles in the filmmaking industry.

SIX-MONTH PRACTICAL FILMMAKING Six-Month Practical Filmmaking is an intensive and practical immersion in the complete craft and technique of filmmaking. Specifically designed to give students the essential tools to launch their professional career as a filmmaker, students will receive a solid foundation in the key elements of filmmaking. Taught by industry professionals, Six-Month Practical Filmmaking provides students with the confidence to enter the film industry, from writing a screenplay to directing and producing their own film. On completion of the course, students will graduate with a showreel of their work. The six-month programme consists of three terms. During Term 1 and 2, students will be trained in all key aspects of filmmaking through a combination of intensive practical workshops and a series of filmmaking exercises, escalating in scale as they go through the programme. Following the learning from the foundation programme in Term 1, students learn the advanced skills in screenwriting; cinematography and sound; fiction directing and producing; documentary production; editing and postproduction during Term 2. In Term 3, students will make their own film and perform key roles on set on other students’ films. International students may not be eligible to study on this course since a visa will not be granted for non-accredited courses and a visa is required to study in programmes longer than 3 months.

From Story to Screen in Eight Weeks, Met Film School’s longest running course, is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in filmmaking. This programme will provide practical experience in all of the key areas of filmmaking and the course culminates in the production of a short film. Over eight weeks the programme will cover the essential crafts areas of screenwriting, use of camera and sound, casting and directing actors, editing and script developing. This is an intensive programme on which all students will write, direct and edit their own films and is ideal for anyone considering a change in career.
Documentary Filmmaking is an intensive eight-week programme in the skills needed to become a confident self-shooter and selfeditor. Taught by an experienced documentary filmmaker, the programme provides essential training in the use of professional cameras and industry-standard editing software. Students are given a background in the history of documentary and will review examples of successful documentaries to better understand the marketplace today. Students will research, write, produce and edit their own short film with the guidance of an industry professional tutor.
Four-Week Directing covers a comprehensive range of filmmaking skills, allowing students to explore the processes of visual storytelling. During this programme, students will gain professional experience in working with actors, interpreting scripts, devising narrative storylines and developing their understanding of the technical aspects of film production. Students will cover cinematography and editing and will focus on improving their directing skills, equipping them with an independent approach to filmmaking.
This course is for experienced cinematographers or those who have experience working with cameras. The course is designed to give students practical, hands-on time with the latest RED cameras and to gain an understanding of camera operation, exposure techniques, and post-production workflow.
