ocated on the southeast shore of Mille Lacs, Isle, the largest town on the shores of the big lake, exemplifies small town living. Originally, called “Ethel’s Island, by Charles Malone after his daughter, the postal service shortened the name of the town to Isle. Malone opened the first store in the village and established the post office. Each summer the population swells with people ready to get away, and during winter Isle gets its “suburb on the ice. The city offers resorts, motels, shopping and recreation. Isle boasts Father Hennepin State Park and a public lake access. It serves as an entry point to the Soo Line Trail.

Welcome to

Wahkon On the south shore of Mille Lacs, Wahkon stands where the earliest settlement in the area was located.

Wahkon’s parade has it all, including a fine walleye rolling down Main Street.

T

ucked along Mille Lacs Lake’s south shore, Wahkon was the earliest settlement in the Mille Lacs Lake area, beginning its town history in 1885. It was platted on the southeast shore of Mille Lacs Lake by the Soo Railroad Company near the site of the old town of Lawrence, once an American Indian trading post. The word “Wahkon” is the Dakota name for “spirit.” The railroad company adopted the name because the American Indians knew Mille Lacs Lake as Spirit Lake. Robert and Ben Briggs built a log cabin near the old site of the Soo Line Depot and acted as land surveyors, locating families on

claims as they began moving into the area. In 1907, with the coming of the railroad, the Wahkon town site was set up. The town became a rail terminal and the docking point for large logging company steamers that transported logs from all points around the lake. Wahkon is booming again with a revitalized Main Street including a post office, convenience store with gas pumps, on and off-sale liquor and restaurants, craft and gift shops, a scrap booking retreat, pet supplies and grooming, a stove store, an eye clinic, a hotel, health spa, thrift store, and accounting business. Several resorts are located in town

and nearby. Wahkon has a city park with boat launch facilities. Come to Wahkon for the 4th of July fireworks display. It’s always a great show. On Aug. 19, 20 and 21 Wahkon’s annual celebration brings a weekend of fun for the whole family. This year take part in a treasure hunt, and don’t miss the classic car cruise at 7 p.m. On Saturday come games, horseshoe tournament and great food. The grand parade begins at 7 p.m. followed by a street dance with Revolution 5. On Sunday head over to the park for a free picnic lunch sponsored by WAVE and a kids fishing tournament.

Welcome to

Onamia

Gateway to Mille Lacs

Making a splash in the dunk tank during Onamia Days.

O

namia received its name from Lake Onamia, which in Ojibwe means “dancing ground. The dance symbolizes either petition or thanksgiving. The city of Onamia is located where early American Indians preformed these dances. The modern town of Onamia is situated south of Mille Lacs, just off Highway 169 on the shore of Lake Onamia. The city dates to 1908 when lumbering was a major industry in the Mille Lacs area, and the first trains reached the town. Today, Onamia is the area’s largest city, housing the Mille Lacs Health System and light industry. Offering over 50 businesses, Onamia is a

favorite shopping stop for visitors. The town offers restaurants, fast food, automotive parts and repair stores, a florist, drug store, a hardware store, grocery store, gas station, video store, on and off-sale liquor, clothing outlet, print shop, post office, bank, realtors, car wash, tanning, laundry facilities, hunting lodge, meat market, sporting goods store, beauty salon and craft and gift shops. And don’t miss the Farmer’s Market on Fridays. Two city parks, skate park and tennis courts provide in-town recreation along with three beautiful and challenging golf courses near by to offer golfers of all abilities a great game. The Lions Fitness Center offers a

chance to stay in shape, and the Mille Lacs Health System Hospital and clinic is wellstaffed to meet emergency needs. Onamia Days, held June 2-5 is the first town-wide festival of the summer in the area. Enjoy a Demolition Derby on Saturday, a 5K walk/run, antique car show, kids games, sidewalk sales, carnival, beer garden, food wagons and street dances. The grand parade will be Sunday at 2 p.m. On July 3, the city will hold a street dance at 8 p.m. with beer garden, food and fire works at dark. Watch for details on the second annual Harvest Festival, Sept. 10.

Welcome to

Garrison A town for all seasons

No one puts on a 4th of July fireworks show quite like Garrison.

O

n the northwest shore of Mille Lacs Lake, Garrison has been known for fishing since 1899. At that time the abundant catches were shipped out of the area for commercial sale. Summer or winter, the town and nearby resorts welcome families and cater to their vacation needs. For those who want to wet a line, check out the harbor facilities, guide service and launch trips for some of the finest fishing on the lake. Tourist accommodations include motels, campgrounds, resorts and two medical clinics, cafes, supper clubs and fast food restaurants. A retail district with curio, grocery and

Daniel Geysolon Sieur DuLuth at the Head of the Lakes – 1679. Minnesota Historical Society Art Collection

The French Explorer Daniel Geysolon (Sieur DuLuth) went to Lake Superior in 1678 to settle the Ojibwe-Sioux War, which had closed the western routes for trade. Going as far as the Ojibwe Village at Lake Mille Lacs he planted the French flag and claimed the Upper Mississippi region for France. In 1680, he secured the release of three members of La Salle’s expedition, including Father Louis Hennepin. On early French maps, Mille Lacs was shown as “Lake Baude” or “Minsisaugaigun.” To the Dakota, it was known as “Mdewakan” or Mystic Lake. It is said that DuLuth’s treatment of the native peoples gained their lasting friendship.

Welcome to

Malmo Settled by the Swedes

On the northeast corner of Mille Lacs, the community prides itself on serving seasonal visitors.

T

he village of Malmo on the northeast shore of Mille Lacs was named after Malmo, Sweden, by Swedish immigrants. Visiting Swedes are often amused by the contrast between the two Malmos. The Swedish city is its country’s second largest and the Minnesota village is so small. In 1888, the first post office was established with postmaster Per Olaf Swedberg. Malmo prides itself on serving seasonal visitors. Two churches, a restaurant, an ice cream parlor, two gas stations and convenience stores, an upholstery facility, a real estate office, liquor store, laundromat,

boat storage and repair service and nearby resorts and supper clubs are available. Fishing the stretch of sand bottom near Malmo promises top walleye action. Malmo Memorial Park, dedicated to those from the village who served in America’s wars, offers sand-bottom swimming and a wellmaintained public access site. A sense of community runs deep in Malmo. The land for the park was donated, and the Malmo Community Hall not only stands on donated land, but was constructed by volunteer labor in the 1920s with donated material. The building has been maintained, improved and

Further up north is the new Cuyuna Lakes Trail, which runs from the Croft Mine in Crosby throughout the Cuyuna Lakes Regional Area to Riverton. Eventually the trail will hook up to Aitkin on the east and the Paul Bunyan Trail on the west. Also open this year is the long-awaited Cuyuna Country Mountain Bike Trail out of the Crosby area. The trail has been in the works for years and is ready to offer a challenge to mountain bikers of all skill levels over the undulating terrain.

■ Mille Lacs Lake Facts ❑ Mille Lacs lies within three counties: Aitkin, Crow Wing and Mille Lacs. The size of the lake is larger than some Minnesota counties. ❑ Mille Lacs is called the "Walleye Factory," an appropriate nickname for a lake in which walleyes deposit approximately 11 billion eggs annually. ❑ Mille Lacs' catchable walleye population is estimated at 1,100,000. ❑ Mille Lacs' windsurfing and sailing conditions are excellent. ❑ Mille Lacs Lake's approximately 480 businesses are ready to serve you.

Down and dirty in the mud. Our area is also home to some fine and challenging ATV trails as well. There are rides on The Soo Line Trail to some of the most challenging and “muddy” trails you can find anywhere in the state. Last July Phase I of Aitkin County’s Northwoods ATV Trail System was dedicated. Trails that are completed include the Lawler Loop, the Moose River Connection and the Itasca Phase I Trail. If all goes according to plan, 420 miles of continuous ATV and snowmobile trails will someday hook up Little Falls to Cass Lake and come right through our Fun Land.

… or the family car Want to hop in the car for a nice “Sunday drive?” Try a stretch of the Great River Road that travels through the area from Palisade to Jacobson along scenic Highway 10. Welcome to

McGrath Founded by Loggers

Located east of Mille Lacs Lake on Hwy. 65, it’s the Fourth of July capital of Mille Lacs.

Loggers built McGrath over a century ago, and they are still a highlight of the annual Labor Day Logging and Threshing Show.

T

he city of McGrath is located in southern Aitkin County on Highway 65. In 1895, the James C. McGrath Logging Company opened logging camps in the area. According to the late Fred Vivant, who was the town historian, first the loggers came to the Aitkin County wilderness, then the homesteaders came, and then businesses. In 1907, James McGrath donated 40 acres and the town of McGrath was founded in 1908. The Soo Line Railroad came to town and businesses established were the Charles Buttler Saloon, Gus Haggberg’s General Store and John Landi’s General Store, Carl

Feeland’s and the Torson Store. The Feeland Store had the McGrath Hotel upstairs, and there was the Anderson Hotel which housed the post office. People danced on Saturday nights and played ball on Sundays. There were silent movies and then talkies. Traveling theatre companies and medicine shows entertained townsfolk. In the early 20s, a large fire destroyed a whole block in McGrath. Lost were Landi’s and Feeland’s stores and Anderson’s Hotel. The annual 4th of July celebration the city puts on brings people from miles away.

Former residents come home from all over the country, and neighbors from surrounding communities gather for the annual celebration. The town boasts one of the best parades around, as well as great food, the Rum River square dancers, logging contests, turtle races, fireworks and more. The McGrath Area Civic Organization, began providing family activities which include winter sledding, games, ice skating and holiday social activities. Labor Day weekend the annual White Pine Logging and Threshing Show is a popular event with all.

■ Ice fishing Mille Lacs is the winter walleye fishing capitol of the world. Whether you want to rough it or fish in comfort in a luxurious sleeper house with all of the amenities of home, for a day, a night or a week, the resorts around the big lake have you covered. Walleye, northern pike, perch, crappie, tullibee and, of course, eel-pout can all be angled through the ice on Mille Lacs. From the reefs to the mud flats, local resorts maintain a well plowed road system throughout the season to get you to the hot spots quickly and safely.

What a haul! Chasin’ “gators” is one thing. Bringing in a haul like this one will bring a smile to anyone’s face.

Rollin’ on the river.

Steamboating as a means of commercial transportation on the upper Mississippi River between Aitkin (Mud River) and Grand Rapids began in 1870. By 1920, it was a thing of the past. It is no coincidence that the same years mark the beginning and the end of large-scale lumbering in northern Minnesota, since steamboating in the area was largely a by-product of the lumber industry. It rose with lumbering and died with it. Logging along the upper Mississippi in the late 19th century was “big business.” All this took manpower, mule and ox power. At the beginning of one season, more than 2,000 men were reported to have passed through Aitkin on their way upriver to work in the logging camps.

n the early 1890s, a hardy group of Finns, Danes and Swedes homesteaded along the mighty Mississippi, in the area that is today the community of Palisade. In its heyday, Palisade was home to a variety of businesses. Trading was brisk, with supplies arriving first by riverboat and then by railroad. Palisade grew into a major riverboat stopping point, with both freight and passengers arriving daily. The Soo Line Railroad first laid tracks in the territory in 1909 with the railroad bridge

McGregor FAC’s As was the case with the evolution of many small communities, McGregor was the result of the westward push of the “Iron Horse.” In 1870, an official of the Northern Pacific Railroad named the site of McGregor after a trapper by that name who lived nearby, and who had come from New York. (Note: The Minnesota Society says this account is one version of how the town was named and another is that it may be named for Maj. John G. MacGregor of Minneapolis who we believe surveyed the area).

Smaller zebra mussels attached to a native fat-mucket mussel in Mille Lacs. Tom Jones photo The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is asking boaters and anglers to continue to work to minimize the spread of aquatic invasive species. Mille Lacs, Gull, Lake Minnetonka, Ogechie, Onamia and Shakopee are known to be infested with zebra mussels. In September 2009, spiny water fleas were found in Mille Lacs and appear as globs on fishing lines. Eurasian Water Milfoil is in Mille Lacs, Bay Lake, Knife Lake and the Ripple River between Bay and Tame Fish Lakes. Flowering Rush has also been reported in Big Sandy Lake near McGregor. Invasive species have so far been found in more than 1,000 lakes and rivers in the state. “The average population of 14 mussels per square foot in Lake Mille Lacs could multiply to 400 per square foot this year,” says DNR Area Fisheries Supervisor Rick Bruesewitz. According to DNR statistics, as many as 100,000 boats leave Lake Mille Lacs each year and visit 171 other lakes creating a real concern for the spreading of the invasive species. “There is no control for zebra mussels,” says DNR Invasive Species Program Supervisor Luke Skinner. “The only control is to prevent the spread.” The question is “Are we up to the challenge?”

Help prevent the spread • Remove any visible vegetation from items that were in the water, including the boat, trailer and all equipment. • Flush engine cooling system, live wells and bilge with tap water. If possible, use hot water. • Do not reuse bait if exposed to infested waters. • Dry boat and other equipment for at least 48 hours before using in non-infested waters. • Examine boat exterior for mussels if it has been docked in infested waters; if mussels are found or exterior is heavily fouled by algae, either clean fouled surfaces or leave boat out of the water for at least five days before entering noninfested waters.

‘It’s the next big thing’

Leadcore trollin’ the throttle on his 10-horse trolling motor and the lure climbs over the obstruction. When he slows the boat, the lure drops down the backside of the rocks and back to the desired depth. With a little practice, an angler can run lures within a few inches of the bottom over long stretches of aquatic real estate. Hawthorne’s had plenty of practice, and he adjusts on the fly to accommodate deep diving baits such as Reef Runners or the shallower diving Salmos he favors. “I like to spot some fish before I drop a line in the water,” Hawthorne said as he peered at his electronics. “Now that looks promising.” Many of the walleyes showing up on his viewer were big, and they seemed to be gathered in pods. Vast distances of deserted sand would give way to dozens of fish in varying sizes, and occasionally a school of fish would float across the view screen like a colorful cloud of smoke. “That’s what we like to see,” Hawthorne said. “The farther they are from the bottom, the more likely they are looking for food.” A few quick cranks on the bait caster brought the lure through the cloud. Two minutes later Hawthorne added a 16-incher to his live well.

For Your Information

Transporting Fish State transportation rules require that all dressed fish and fillets, except bullheads, crappies and sunfish, must retain a one-inch patch of skin with scales intact on the body other than the belly. All fish must be packed and wrapped so as to facilitate unpacking for counting. Filleted fish may not be reduced to more than two single fillets per fish. Undressed and frozen fish must have tails, fins and skin intact. Frozen fish must be packaged and frozen separately for identification. Fish with length limits, like walleyes and muskies, must be transported undressed with heads attached, but may be gutted and gilled.

Here’s a tip: One of the best ways to transport your fish so they can be counted and identified is in clear plastic freezer bags. Fillets must show at least a 1-square-inch of skin with scales so fish species can be identified.

By Rob Passons Brad Hawthorne grew up fishing the St. Croix in the walleye-rich waters near Chisago. “Thats where I cut my teeth,” he said. Six years ago, he started guiding on lakes up our way. He has enthusiastically embraced lead-core trolling. “It’s the next big thing,” he said. “Fall fishing this past year was awesome, and word is slowly getting out.” Lead-core trolling takes bait right down to lazy walleyes laid up deep on the sand and mud in late summer and fall. Hawthorne uses 9-1/2 foot telescoping trolling rods designed by local legend Gary Roach. He rigs bait casters with a few hundred feet of lead core line tipped with a 30foot length of 10-pound fireline. A counter on the side of the reel tells the angler how much line is spooled out. According to Hawthorne, the math is pretty simple. “For every 10 yards of lead core that goes in the water, the lure drops an average of 5 feet,” he said. “It drops 4 to 8 feet with the first 30 feet of tip line, depending on the lure.” This drop rate is contingent on a 2-mileper-hour rate of speed, Hawthorne said. According to Hawthorne, speed is key. The faster the boat speed, the shallower the bait will run. If a rock pile comes up on Hawthorne’s bottom scanner, he gooses

Big Sandy Lake – a fisherman’s dream Besides walleye – perch, northern pike, crappie and sunfish abound By Walt Sauerbrei Big Sandy Lake is Aitkin County's second largest lake covering 6,526 acres with approximately 50 miles of shoreline. Big Sandy is a reservoir created in the late 1800s when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built a dam on the Big Sandy River. At that time, boats could travel through the lock to the Mississippi River. The Sandy River, Prairie River and Aitkin Lake Creek are three major tributaries. Recent secchi readings showed a water clarity of seven feet, which is considered good due to the dark brown coffee colored water. However, the MPCA has labeled the lake as impaired because of the high level of phosphorus. The lake has a maximum depth of 84 feet and is considered an excellent walleye fishery. According to DNR fishing specialist, Rick Bruesewitz, the walleye in Big Sandy grow slowly the first couple of years. Because many of the perch are too big for them to forage, their food supply is limited. After that, their growth rate is more normal. Samplings from the DNR surveys have found walleye up to 29 inches. In 1995, stocking of walleye was discontinued. "There is good spawning in the tributaries and along the shoreline," added Bruesewitz. Besides walleye, the main fish in Big Sandy are northern pike, perch, crappie and sunfish. Large numbers of tullibee live in Bellhorn Bay, where the deep cold water provides good habitat. McGregor football coach and avid fisherman, Bob Staska, loves the Big Sandy fishery. "It's a fisherman's dream of never-ending structure." Big Sandy has 19 islands; some of the more prominent are Battle Island, Moose Gut, Flow Island and Indian Point, which has been connected to the mainland with a road.

Early history The Sioux Indians lived in the area during the 17th century. In the 1860s, Sandy Lake was the main home of the Chippewa, until a smallpox epidemic and a battle with the Sioux nearly wiped out the Band. Fewer than 400 Chippewa survived. Today, the lake is home to the Sandy Lake Band of the Mississippi Chippewa who are now part of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. When the United States attempted to relocate the Ojibwe population out of Michigan and Wisconsin, the Big Sandy Lake tragedy occurred. In 1850, the Ojibwe were forced to leave their homes and told to arrive at Sandy Lake no later than Oct. 25 where cash, food and other goods, promised as concessions for their land, would be waiting for them. By Nov. 10, 4,000 Ojibwe arrived. The promises and provisions were not waiting; 150 people died from dysentery. Desiring to return to their homeland, they set out on the arduous journey on Dec. 3. As

rea residents call it Minnesota’s bestkept secret, but the Crosby Lakes Area offers something for everyone! Located on the western edge of our fun land, the Crosby Lakes Area is an area of lakes and woods on the Cuyuna Iron Range. The area was named for Cuyler Adams, the surveyor who discovered iron ore here in the 1890s, and his dog Una. Former mine pits have filled with crystal clear water, and the pits are today stocked with over 40,000 rainbow and brook trout. These new lakes are also popular for boating, fishing and scuba diving. But it’s not just the mine lakes that bring visitors to the area.

Larger lakes in various sizes from Serpent Lake to Bay Lake to Emily Lake have long attracted visitors to the area. Crosby and Ironton have many antique shops lining Main Street. Bike on the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trail. Together the towns, businesses and resorts offer a huge choice of activities to keep visitors to the area busy and occupied — four seasons a year. Walleye Moons

2012

2011

Full Moon names date back to Native Americans of what is now the northern and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names Harvest Moon to each recurring full moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There was some variation in the Moon names, but in general, the same ones were current throughout the tribes from New England to Lake Superior.

Hill City Fun ... anytime of the year

One hundred square miles of lakes, streams and forests. Enjoy the area’s 3.5-mile paved walking, running and roller-blade trail. Hill City fun on the 4th of July.

I

Summer always brings fun and excitement to Hill City especially with our great 4th of July celebration and don’t forget the opening of fishing in mid-May. The opener brings people from all over to fish and argue over whose fish was bigger. Hill Lake not only is great for fishing but also a great lake to go tubing or water skiing on, with plenty of room to take that new boat and “open her up.” The 4th of July is absolutely spectacular. David Jacobson with his 57” monster.

Muskie kid throws back a monster 8-year-old David Jacobson and his dad Erik caught and released their second possible state record muskie last fall By Rob Passons Erik Jacobson and his son David were trolling on Mille Lacs Lake when the muskie struck. Neither of them immediately noticed that the rod had doubled up. Father and son were having a lively debate over lure selection, a topic on which David will wax eloquently all day long if allowed. The discussion was quickly postponed when the drag on the portside reel began buzzing out line. Erik Jacobson is one of those guys who can’t spend enough time on the water, and he’s passed his passion down to his kids. Erik’s eldest daughter Meredith is 10 years old, and she had familial bragging rights with a 55-inch muskie she hooked last year. Even 5-year-old Noah has multiple trophy catches to his name, including a 36-inch northern. “If you look up ‘fishing’ in the dictionary, you’ll find a picture of my family,” Meredith said. Meredith is magnanimous about losing her spot as top dog. “I’m going to catch that muskie when it’s 59-inches long,” she said. She won’t have long to wait. The sun was bruising the western horizon when David’s lunker struck. Erik set the

62 / 2011 Fun Guide

hook and passed the rod to David, and David heaved and reeled. “It’s a giant,” Erik said as David fought for leverage. “Is it bigger than my 47?” David asked as the lunker stripped out line. “Way bigger!” his dad said. The muskie surfaced once and both anglers screamed, and then the drag let go and David went butt over tea kettle into the bow of the boat, but he held on. Erik quickly adjusted the reel and the battle continued. “It’s huge,” Erik bellowed as the monster boiled up near the boat. “Lift it! Lift it! Reel! Reel!” “I’m reeling! I’m reeling!” David assured him. David was momentarily blind to the developments as he hauled back on the rod and his dad dipped the oversized net into the turmoil. “Do you got him?” he yelled. “I do now,” Erik said. David was finally able to get a close look at his trophy. He dropped the rod and leaned over the side of the boat as his dad clipped the hook. Erik hauled the fish aboard. “You did it,” Erik said. They quickly measured the fish, and there was a moment of confusion when the data was confirmed. “57?” David said. “57?” “It’s 57 inches with a 27-inch girth,” Erik said. “Oh my God!” The pair took some quick pictures of the monster. The muskie had a huge head and golden eyes like an alligator. It remained remarkably calm during the photo session. Then came the moment of truth.

Erik had done the math in his head. He caught and released a 55-incher in the fall of 2007 that was probably a new state record. He’d vowed not to take anything home that wasn’t a formula fish, but it wasn’t really his call this time. “I don’t know what to do with this fish,” he told his son. “I don’t want to kill it,” David said without hesitation. “I want it to get bigger.” Erik didn’t argue. He carefully lowered the giant over the side and eased it into the water. He tail rocked it for a few moments before the muskie perked up and swam slowly away. “Wow,” David said. “She’s beautiful.” Art Lyons of Bena caught the current state record muskie in 1957 at Lake Winnibigoshish. The monster weighed 54 pounds, and the mount hung in a Bena bar until the building burned down in 1979 and the trophy burned with it. Erik stands by his decision to release the 2007 muskie that had DNR reps and muskie anglers across the state shaking their heads in disbelief. As far as the latest Jacobson non-entry into the record books, Erik said it’s a moot point. “If we would have kept the fish, it wouldn’t have mattered how heavy it was,” he said. “It would have been disqualified because there were two of us who handled the fishing rod.” The next time David, or Meredith, hooks a possible record-setter, that won’t be the case. “David told me after we released it, ‘Dad, you don’t have to pass me the rod anymore. I can handle it.’”

The joke’s on you

■ Spring Brook (Mora)

Bad joke #1:

Taking its name from the stream that winds its way through a major portion of the course, Spring Brook Golf Course (formerly Mora Country Club) is celebrating its 15th season as an 18-hole complete golfing facility which includes an expanded and redesigned course and clubhouse. The old nine, renowned as one of mid-Minnesota’s finest nine-hole layouts, has been left virtually intact. The new nine is a shot-makers delight, winding its way through 80 scenic acres of gorgeous terrain. Spring Book is staffed by a PGA certified golf professional and has a fleet of power carts, a new driving range and club house.

A golfer tees off … ball hits a tree and comes back and hits the golfer in the head. Golfer falls down and dies on the spot. Golfer reaches the Pearly Gates and St. Peter asks him, “My good man, how did you get here?” The golfer says … “In two.”

An even worse joke #2 A golfer finished a round and said to his caddie, “Throw my clubs into the lake.” The caddie did and then the golfer said, “Throw my bag into the lake.” The caddie did and then the golfer said, “Now, I am going to jump into the lake and drown myself.” The caddie said, “You can’t do that.” The golfer said, “Oh yeah, I am going to jump into the lake and drown myself.” The caddie said, “You can’t.” The golfer said, “Why not?” The caddie said, “You can’t keep your head down.”

■ Quadna Hills Golf Course

Joke #3: A guy asked me how I played and I told him, “Three under – one under a tree, one under water and one under a rock.”

Fore!

A scenic nine-hole course featuring woods and water south of Hill City on Hwy. 169, Quadna Hills is ready to offer beauty and challenge for seasoned golfers, families and juniors alike. Quadna Hills plays to 2,972 yards from the back tees and is set among rolling terrain. Quadna Hills offers an exceptional value that is ideal for a quick nine holes or a whole weekend of golfing fun. Lodging and banquet facilities are available as well as group specials through Quadna Lodge. Stop in and see the new clubhouse and enjoy a beverage at The 10th Hole.

A classic hustle Can you drive a golf ball roundly off a tee? Then maybe you’re game for this classic hustle, made famous in the Roaring Twenties but good for replay anytime. You wager you can hit a 500-yard shot, a la a famous bet between ‘20’s high-rollers “Titanic” Thompson (legend has it he secured a lifeboat spot on the ill-fated voyage by dressing as a woman) and Arnold “the Brain” Rothstein, of “Chicago Black Sox Scandal” fame, recounted in Harry Anderson’s Games You Can’t Lose. If your mark is easy, you shake on it, then head for the Grand Canyon, 1,600 yards deep. If your make is wily, as was Rothstein’s when Thompson – a gifted golfer – proposed the shot, then a stipulation may be added that this be done all on a level surface. No problem, as Thompson soon proved by taking the shot to an icy shoreside golf course in February and drove a shot across the frozen surface of Lake Erie. “The ball reportedly didn’t stop until the April thaw.”

Stop in at the library to see work by local artists. Come to bike or shop and stay for a meal at one of several locally owned and operated restaurants. Mora, Minnesota, population 3,571, hails itself as “A City for All Seasons,” due to four events that take place each year: canoe races on the Snake River in the spring, a half marathon in the summer, a bike tour in the fall, and the most famous of all, the Mora Vasaloppet cross-country ski race each February. The race is patterned after a similar

Milaca, Minnesota, an easy half-hour drive from Mille Lacs Lake, offers shopping, dining and recreation opportunities for visitors to central Minnesota. The town of 2,946 is the county seat of Mille Lacs County with the full range of government services offered at the county courthouse, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Our area is a prime birding hot spot because of the variety of coniferous and deciduous trees, prairies, lakes and wet lands. Aitkin County offers nearly 1 million acres of public land that is open to the general public for birding. More than 300 species of birds have been observed, including seven of the top 10 most searched-for in North America. Refresh your spirit

Come back and visit us again! In the fall, the quietude is broken by the simple sound of the leaves dropping on the surface of our lakes. With blazing crimson and burnished gold of the forests reflected in the water, fall is a wonderful time to visit our area. Winter silences the water, wrapping it in a heavy mantle of ice. While the ice is known to creak, groan and sometimes snap with a percussive beat, winter fishing grows in popularity every year. Our waters are noisiest in the spring, when creeks send the snowmelt tumbling and churning into our lakes. But it’s a happy noise, a joyful reminder that summer will soon return. Whatever the season, come back and see us and rejuvenate the spirit within yourself as you visit us again and again.
