Our motto and mission statement for all 570 Sports Camps is: Safe. Organized. Affordable. Fun!. We incorporate these standards into all the activities we offer to the Pocono area youth. 570 Sports Camps was created when four local football coaches, Chuck Dailey, Jim McCarroll, Jim Miller, and I, got together to create a new football camp. Rather than create another football camp that focuses on just one school district, we decided to create one big camp for kids throughout the Poconos. The template for our first camp was so successful

I was the long-time head football coach and athletic director at Lehman Intermediate School at East Stroudsburg North. I am a social studies teacher and have been at Lehman since the building opened. From there, we collaborate with distinguished high school coaches of each specific sport/activity to create the quality experience people have come to expect from 570 Sports Camps.

What types of camps do you offer?
Presently, 570 Sports Camps has a football, field hockey, soccer, wrestling, and robotics camp. Our robotics camp is held at St. Luke’s Hospital: Monroe Campus and allows campers the unique opportunity to learn how STEM and robotics are used in medicine from St. Luke’s outstanding medical team. We are offering an all-new VETS sports performance-training clinic twice a week during the summer. We also offer a kicking clinic with Philadelphia Eagles legend David Akers for high school and college kickers. Does 570 Sports Camps offer other opportunities for athletes to learn, grow, and have fun?
We also have seasonal leagues! Our spring and fall flag football league are by far the most popular activities we run. Last spring, we had over 200 participants. We also offer a basketball clinic/league in the winter. We will be running our next wrestling tournament soon. This past March, our first tournament in Lehighton was a huge success with about 275 wrestlers from all over PA and NJ. It is also worth mentioning that we have athletic trainers from St. Luke’s on-site for all our leagues and camps. Do you have to be a certain age or ability level to join 570 Sports Camps?
We have activities for a variety of ages. Our activities are designed with beginners in mind; however, our experienced high school coaches know how to coach and challenge participants of all abilities. We found as coaches that too many programs were focused on the top few players, and by the time kids were eligible for junior high sports, they felt like it was too late for them to give sports a try. Since 570 Sports Camps is not affiliated with any school district, are these camps and activities meant to replace or supplement a school program?
Not at all! Our activities are designed to build interest and skill for school programs. Being around scholastic athletics for so long, we saw a need for youth programs that were run by quality people, were affordable, and were well organized. We also found that Lehigh Valley schools had an edge on our local schools. We realized that 8 • MeSee Magazine

these athletes had been competing against each other since they were very young. We wanted to bring that competitive edge to our kids by having them grow up playing against some of the best athletes from the area, not just their school. If my kid is really into a sport, will 570 Sports Camps help him grow more as a player and perform better with his school team?
Yes. All of our activities have two basic components. There is a clinical aspect that teaches players the basics and beyond (based on their ability). We also have a competitive component where your player will compete in safe, organized games against some of the best players in the area. There is no substitute for quality game experience! What is something our readers might not know about 570 Sports Camps?
We give a tremendous amount back to the community. We have donated to numerous school athletic and academic programs. We’ve donated prizes to science fairs, community nights, and tricky trays. We’ve donated money to purchase books for elementary school students. We’ve sponsored the car for a young racer. But we are most proud of our 570 Scholarship Program.

Family Fun Park By Tom Eccleston
Multiple choice may be a difficult testing method in the classroom, but at Costa’s Family Fun Park, it’s a snap. Here, you see, all options are the correct answer. Costa’s offers a boundless array of activities: bumper boats, miniature golf, laser tag, water slides, batting cages, go-karts, and video games. Throw in some hand-dipped ice cream from the snack bar, and a family’s day is made. “We’ve been to the Park several times during the summer, and it doesn’t disappoint,” proclaims Katrina Walden of Pompton Lakes, NJ. “My extended clan rents a house nearby, making Costa’s very reachable. Lake Wallenpaupack is less than three miles away.” Indeed, this Hawley-based attraction is the perfect getaway for outdoor enthusiasts. Lori Phillips, the Park Manager, views multigenerational enjoyment as the key to Costa’s endurance. “It’s a close-knit habitat where parents bring children and allow them the freedom to navigate [the property] on their own. But adults can just as easily participate themselves.” The ever-popular go-karts allow riders to putter along at an even pace, with smaller vehicles available for tykes at least 42 inches tall. Costa’s 18-hole miniature golf course features sand traps accompanied by a stream with an imposing stone waterfall. A laser tag system provides state-of-the-art interactive amusement, as players are suited up with a blue vest and phaser gun, promptly taking aim at targets on their opponents to score points.

Despite its amped-up sensory octane, the Park is ADAcompliant, a blessing for moms and dads with special needs youngsters. “Costa’s is the right size for challenged kids who might not like the bigger rides at other thrill parks. There’s no waiting in long lines, either,” notes Mac Swajeski, who resides in Yardley, PA. While exploring, embrace your inner all-star at one of the batting cages, where ball machines throw a variety of pitches to accommodate all ages and abilities. The site’s game room holds more than two dozen machines, from old-school pinball to high-tech simulated car-racing. There’s also a Playland branded for smaller Costa’s patrons; downsized versions of the Park’s miniature golf and go-karts are on hand here, paired with monkey bars, a bouncing bridge, and a climbing wall. All this hustle and bustle will make you work up a sweat, so cool off with some watery rejuvenation. Four slides and ten bumper boats add up to a ton of heat relief. “The boats are equipped with far-reaching squirt pistols, but you probably won’t duck for cover, since the blast is a welcome comfort from the sun,” Phillips laughs. Longtime vacationer Barbara Petersen agrees. “For over a quarter-century Costa’s has been a great place to swim on a hot day,” says the Ithaca, NY denizen. “My children, and now my grandchildren, have a wonderful time there using and scaling the equipment. The Park never loses its appeal, and I’ll always recommend it to families.” There’s no admission fee at Costa’s, and while paying à la carte is certainly an option, snagging a wristband package green lights widespread access to the Park. You’d be right in assuming this spot hosts some energetic birthday parties, as bundled rates incorporate meal offerings with extended play time. After Labor Day and through Columbus Day, Costa’s is only open on weekends. Until then, Family Fun is a daily occurrence. “Since we’re owned by a family, it’s easy to focus the service there. Because the Park hasn’t lost sight of that, first-time visitors become return guests,” Phillips says.

I have been employed by the Pocono Mountain School District since August of 2001 and have taught special education on both sides of the district. I currently am a 2nd grade learning support teacher at SEC. In February of 2001, John began his career at University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, where he is currently an EMS Supervisor in command of the “B-team” or 2nd tour. TJ is 15 years old and attends Pocono Mountain East High School. He is involved in marching band and chorus and was also in this year’s production of “Pippin.” He plays the piano outside of school and loves anything to do with art

Julianna is 12 years old and attends Swiftwater Intermediate School. She loves to play basketball and is actively involved in several leagues. When she is not playing basketball, she enjoys playing outside, talking to and hanging out with friends, and, of course, playing video games. Jackson is almost 2 years old and attends the Oxford School two days a week. He is a typical toddler, always exploring his surroundings and learning new things. He loves playing with trucks and spending time outside. He truly loves when his older brother and sister play with him and entertain him; the belly laughs during these times are endless. In February of this year, our journey as a family began to take a turn no one ever imagined. Our oldest son, TJ, came downstairs and said, “Hey mom, my neck is swollen.” At first, I shrugged it off and told him to go salt the driveway. When he came back in, his neck was still bothering him. As

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO AS A FAMILY?
Jennifer… With our crazy schedules, any time together as a family is my favorite. My ultimate favorite thing to do as a family is any holiday celebration, Christmas Eve night and Christmas morning being at the forefront. We have traditions, new and old, that we are teaching Jackson, and I believe this is one of the things that has made us blend so well as a family. Each Christmas Eve, everyone (including the dogs) wears special Christmas pajamas, and we sit around the Christmas tree as I read “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Christmas morning has become a favorite, as our entire family travels to our house for breakfast and a present exchange. It is a crazy,

TJ… My favorite activity is fun, family Fridays at our house. These nights tend to go really late, but we get to spend time together with our cousins and aunt and uncles as well. Fridays at our house include lots of laughter, playing games, and catching up with each other.
Julianna… My favorite activity is family vacations. We take the most awesome family vacations together. These are my favorite because we always do fun things and the adventures are endless. I especially like any water activities my brother, cousins, and I do together. I cannot wait to go this year, because we will be bringing our own boat and that means a lot more fun on the water.
Jackson… Jackson cannot yet tell us what his favorite activity is, but he is happiest when we are all home together, gathered in the living room chatting and entertaining him. It sometimes becomes a contest as to who can make him laugh the most.

My kids and I were both AMAZED by the final products! Even without any crafting abilities, our shirts still turned out great, and my kids have been wearing them proudly ever since. All I can say is that if I can do it, you can too! Here is how we did it and the techniques we used.

STEP 5: After all shirts were twisted, wrapped, and banded up, we filled the dye bottles with water.
Let the dying begin! This is where my kids really had fun. Some of them were really meticulous about where they applied the dye, while others sprayed it all over. Either way, they had fun and didn’t fight for at least 20 minutes.
STEP 8: Wrap the wet shirts in plastic and let them sit. We let them sit overnight for more vibrant colors.
STEP 9: It was like Christmas morning the next day. The kids were so excited to see how their designs turned out. One by one, we unraveled each shirt, rinsed, and hung it outside. After all were rinsed, I ran them through the washer/dryer.
