ACADEMIC WORKS & COMPETITIONS

TOWER OF FREEDOM Sziget Festival - Art of Freedom Competition Winner - with Ece Yuyar Budapest, Hungary - Built on August 2016 The artwork is located in Budapest, Sziget Festival. The project serves as both meeting point and exhibition zone. Tower of freedom greets the festival attendants as a gigantic 15 meters high structure at the main festival area and invites them into an exhibiton about “Hungarian Revolution” as the Sziget Festival pays tribute to the 60th anniversary of the 1956 revolution. The pavillion sets two different mood for the audience with being plain and simple from the outside but dynamic from the inside with the help of the triangular structure and colorful lighting. It is 15 meters high and the ground area for the exhibition is 100 m2 as a square plan.

LIIKKEESEEN MARINA Diploma Thesis Kocaeli, Turkey - 2013

The projest is located in Kocaeli, Bayramoğlu. The design’s program contains a hotel, outdoor movie theater, restaurants, cafes and bars, public pool and sports area, fitness center, spa center and a parking space with both inside and outside functions. The main problem is that the projects area cuts the connection between the main road and the seaside which makes the area unuseful. That being the main problem helped me through the concept. A direct line that goes from the main road to meet the seaside as it separates all programs in two different sides . Not only being a quick way to the marina, it makes all the functions easily accessible. Separating all the functions in two different sides occured an error for losing the connection between the programs. In order to make the scenario work, a shell was designed that acts like path’s extention to recreate the circulation that gives people the oppurtunity to go from ground level to the top of the functions which connects each other with a bridge in the middle.

DİNAMİK KENT Architectural Design Studio V Istanbul, Turkey - 2011

The project area is located in Şişli, Istanbul. The area is a mixed use of residential and commercial spaces at the moment. The project aims to create a small campus in the city for visual and auditory arts that houses art studios, classes, concert areas, exhibition halls and restaturant / cafe’s. The area is on one of the most busy avenue in Istanbul and it’s on narrow street surrounded by tall buildings that makes people want to run away from all the noise and visual pollution. Using this problem as a starting point, created 4 main public multi-functional spaces to give people a place to breathe in the city, and these spaces give function to their area and their surrounding buildings. For example one of the main spaces we use for public concerts is surrounded by auditory art buildings. Inspired by the movement and complicated sense of the avenue to shape the buildings. They are all like random rocks with sharp edges fallen down on earth to cut the tension in the city.

WATER CITY Urban Space Design - with Benoit Bourd (FR), Kate Shepherd (AUS) Oulu, Finland - 2012

Noora Lahpendera (FIN), Lauri Salo (FIN)

In 2035, the sea level in Oulu wil rise 6 meters, covering a large proportion of the current city centre. To create the new urban entity, the old city’s urban context is replicated. The rising water phenomenon breaks the context of the old city to create the new fragmented city plan. The old is linked to the new city via the green belt connection. Retaining to the current main pedestrian routes from the centre to the market square.

Maintaining the link to the new city’s main functions and creating a walkable city centre. Each tram stop is a maximum 500 meters or 5 minutes walk any point in the new city.

ØYA TOWER 120 Hours Competition Finalist - with Ece Yuyar Oslo, Norway - 2014 The concept is based on two main lines linked between Toyen Public Bath and Food Court area, and between stages. It creates a square that’ll define or area. Giving it’s height occured by rotating and scaling the sqare upwards inspiredby movements of the people at the festival. The icon is located in the welcome zone of the festival area. It shows itself first when thevisitors enter to the zone. The dinamic structure and the height makes it easily recognizableand fits to the spirit of the festival. It has watch towers combined with sitting areas of differentview points which is reachable by climbing to it by using the vertical circulation. The iconcreates a chill-out zone inside it’s outer shell. It’s also a meeting point for the festivaland it contains programs which festival participants may need. There are 2 main wooden logs that builds the whole structure. The structure builds up by creating a spine. The units are demountable and it’s easy to construct. The space betweenthe logs offer a vertical solution that helps to the program of vertical use. It also gives you the oppurtunity to grow something on like an ivy, it could easily climb the structure. The structure casts shadows from different angles all day that changes the atmosphere of“the chill-out zone” and the outside of the icon. The structure offers a relaxative view from the inside when you look up.

OULU STUDENT HOUSE Contemporary Architecture V Oulu, Finland - 2013 The project is located in the city centre of Oulu. The area is currently used as a park. The project’s program considers auditorium and a small auditorium, work spaces, library, meeting rooms, restaurant and a bar. The concept is based on a successful graphic of a student, it goes from bottom to the top. When the form goes up, it stretches upwards to create more spaces and pushes in to create a long stair that leads to the top of the building which represents the celebration. There are two entrances to the building, one from the main street and one from the riverside. The riverside goes directly to the working spaces. When you enter from the main one, the lobby welcomes you and lets you see all the public functions in the building. The lobby is directly linked to the auditorium, exhibition hall, cafe and the library. On the second oor there are working spaces, meeting rooms and a restaurant. Working spaces are directly linked to the sauna with an elevator and stair core which is in the basement. On the top oor there is a bar that includes a terrace. The bar is also reachable from the outside of the building through the long stairs for those who want to feel challenged like a student.

ILLUMINATED SPHERES Design in Urban Context - with Hüseyin Tahir Oyanık Oulu, Finland - 2012 The goal was to design a street furniture that fits to the environment of Oulu. First we decided on the functions that will shape the furniture, like being a noticable meeting place and waiting place. And it also needs to behave like a shelter, because Oulu is a very northern city in Finland and located right below the arctic circle. We designed the shelter formed as a sphere, because it wouldn’d hold snow on it, and wrapped the spheres with decorative led lights for it to be easily noticable out in the dark days of the dark winter. Inside the shelter, the sitting area forms with the outer shell of the sphere to leave a space in the middle to enter. We stretched out some tables attached to the outer shell with the sitting area that could be useful to put some newspapers or coffes on. By leaving a void under the tables we created space for the bike tires for those who park outside of the shelter. Northern lights are visible through the transparent ceilings, and the interior lits up with illuminated benches. The final thing we considered was to let people change the outer light of the spheres from the inside. So it would effect the city’s atmosphere by creating a dynamic and unordinary mood.
