President’s Report The end of 2017 is close at hand, and we can now reflect on one of the busiest lead ups to Christmas that can be remembered. It has all come about since the opening day of the club’s new grand foyer, gaming room and memorial gardens in August. The opening triggered the appearance of multiple hoardings in the older part of the building where renovations have been progressed the quality of new spaces for members to enjoy. Already, the old Panda outdoor gaming room has been converted to a comfortable lounge, and the new Belmont Bar opened in December. Other spaces will be ready before Christmas.

One of the more noticeable changes happening in the club will be the demise of the 1st Floor TAB that will be relocated to its brand new facility downstairs. It will be a fully automated venue offering the latest in touch screen technology for punters. Management will be staffing the machines during the opening period late in December to assist those who are not conversant with the computer logic used by some of our newer generations.

The year-end has also been a busy time for our Accounts Department as they prepare the books for an annual audit, and announce the results of the year’s trading. There was some preliminary paper work done during Sept\Oct to relieve some time pressure on the accountants so that they had a walk-up start in December. It is anticipated that a surplus of just under $3M should be revealed at the appropriate time.

We were delighted to see club employee Simaima Tuafa receive The NSW Rugby League’s 2017 Women’s Player of the Year award. She has capped this off with outstanding performances in the women’s division of the 2017 RL World Cup that Australia won in convincing fashion in December.

provided with suitable financial assistance, and be outfitted appropriately to represent the club on official occasions. The RSL & Services Association recently held a conference at which they offered a Program entitled Fit for 20/20. The program offered insights into seven key areas of governance that are designed to assist clubs to succeed into the future. It is pleasing to report that Merrylands RSL has addressed all of the elements that their consultants have recommended. The 2018 AGM will bring the 2 year election cycle into focus early in the year, and I encourage interested members to consider your opportunity to take part in the guidance of your club at Board level. It can be a rewarding experience to witness your decision making evolve into something tangible that fellow members can enjoy.

Ron Hand JP President

The Board has agreed to recognise her accomplishments by endowing her as a Merrylands RSL Ambassador. She will be

Development Report This column begins with the news that our Stage 2 DA was re-submitted and approved by Cumberland Council during November. The club will be ready to start a tendering process as soon as our Project Manager is appointed, and a financially sustainable process has been determined. A detailed design set of drawings is required from our Architects Peter & Michelle to enable appropriate competitive tendering. Also, the club’s Masterplan drawings and model were sent to Cumberland Council on 2nd December. It is probable that this submission will be passed on to an Independent Hearing & Assessment Panel as required by local regulations for developments over $5M. Work on the Baby Health Centre renovation has made slow progress since the anticipated hand-over date late last year. There have been complications with 6

the procurement of heritage building products that are needed to blend in with the existing fabric of the building. There is a light at the end of the tunnel with it being reported that work is continuing almost daily to add this structure to our impressive new entry.

kitchen, and re-commence in February to include a new Bistro dining room, the new Military Rd Coffee Shop, as well as the conversion of the old change counters into lounge space. The all-up cost for the renovations was valued at $5.5M by the Quantity Surveyors.

Frequent visitors to the older part of the club will have noticed that some of the black hoardings have come down to reveal the outstanding work done by the builders and interior designers. So far, (at Dec 4th) we have seen the new outdoor lounge, and the totally re-built bar, now called the Belmont. More will be opened up during December, and we will have a full TAB, separate children’s room, and new bathrooms next to the buffet restaurant along Military Rd

All of the renovation work should be completed by the middle of the year and we can catch our breath before the challenges of what lays ahead in Stage 2. This will be another big-ticket item, and will require external funding should we start construction work before 2019.

But there is more as was said in TV adage. Work will cease over Christmas on the new

Refurbishment

Refurbishment works are in full swing at Merrylands RSL Club, with the completion of the new Belmont Bar and lounge, Terrace@2160, Bellbirds Playground, the Betty Cuthbert Sports Lounge, and new bathroom facilities. Furphy’s Coffee Lounge is due to be completed early in the new year in addition to the new Sage 2160 restaurant. It has been quite a busy time and our members have been very understanding waiting in anticipation for each of the new areas to be completed. We have seen our Club transform itself into a lovely area of contemporary design. If members have any questions, please feel free to ask our staff for directions or assistance in the new areas. Club Ambassador 2018 One of our very own, Simiama Taufa has been awarded for her great performance and efforts in Rugby League in 2017. She

received 3 prestigious sporting awards. The Dally M (Brad Fittler) NSW Trophy, Australian Representative Player of the Year for the Jillaroos and NSW Squad and recently was selected to represent Australia in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup. The Jillaroos were successful in the tournament and came away as winners. She has truly made the Club very proud and the Board have decided to make Simiama as the Club ambassador for 2018. Simiama has proven time and time again that she is an elite athlete with a strong determined attitude which the Club truly stands behind. I am very pleased to have Simiama represent us in the future and look forward to what goals she will reach in 2018. West Guildford Public School On Friday December 10 2017, Guildford West Public School commemorated Remembrance Day with the unveiling of a memorial stone which was coordinated by the Club and Sub Branch. The stone was generously donated by Mark McBride from Pacific Quarrying and diamond cut by his associate Peter Dominello. The memorial garden where the stone stands

was actually worked on by some of the students and the entire school community were all excited and proud to have such a marvellous new memorial in their local school. It was a great day to be a part of and I thank the school and its teachers who have been encouraging their students to better understand the sacrifice that was given by our local residents during WWI and WWII. Cumberland Council During September of this year, the local government elections took place and it is with great pleasure to advise you all that Cumberland Council now has a democratically elected office. Going forward, Merrylands RSL Club is confident in the direction the new Council will lead our community in and hope to strengthen our relationship between Council and the RSL Club.

GUILDFORD WEST PUBLIC SCHOOL UNVEILS MEMORIAL The children of Guildford West Public School know the importance of Anzac and Remembrance Day to commemorate Australia’s fallen war heroes. As part of a school project led by teacher Mr Mark Robinson, the students designed and erected a memorial garden in 2017 with the assistance of Staff from Fairfield Bunnings. The memorial was then completed with an erected diamond cut sand stone that was supplied Pacific Quarrying and Dominello Stonemasons as a joint

venture between the Merrylands RSL Sub Branch and Club Ltd. An official unveiling took place on 10th November 2017 at 10.30 am during the School’s Remembrance Day ceremony, where MRSL Sub Branch President, Mr Rob Grimley, Sub Branch Secretary, Mr Frank Vella and MRSL Club CEO, Mr Bryn Miller, attended to honour this wonderful venture. Students from all classes made poppies which they laid during the ceremony gracefully.

Mr Miller said he is overwhelmingly pleased that “Guildford West Public School has taken on a role in remembrance and educating the younger generation on the significance of Australia’s war history. The Club looks forward to many more commemorative services at your Memorial Garden.”

This tree planted in the Memorial Garden is said to be an offshoot of the original Lone Pine Tree from Gallipoli

HELPING LOCAL COMMUNITIES GROW Each year your Club presents official donations to the community during the President’s Cabaret and in 2017 it was no different. MRSL Club President, Mr Ron Hand, said “It is our passion to go the extra distance that helps to define who we are and what we do in the community” and it was with great pleasure that we provided an extra $44,000 in funding this year, totalling $830,453 in local support. Cumberland Council Mayor, Mr Greg Cummings, accepted the cheque on behalf of the Cumberland Community and congratulated all the Organisations for their well-deserved funding, which the local community will only reap the benefits of.

PARTNERSHIP SPOTLIGHT – YOUTH OFF THE STREETS Father Chris Riley, founder of Youth Off the Streets, said “Youth Off The Streets believes that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and disadvantage that many of our kids experience. Our schools work collaboratively to deliver a tailored approach that considers the needs of each student. Merrylands is home to our Chapel School, Step Up and ASPIRE program. With the support of Merrylands RSL we have been able to help students develop resiliency and skills for life. Our goal is that by the time a student has completed their education, they have a strong sense of belonging to the community and are on a positive path to further education and employment. All of this would not be possible without the support of our long term, local supporters who have assisted us every step of the way. Youth Off The Streets would like to thank Merrylands RSL for their long-term commitment to our kids. With this support, we have been able to help local young people realise their potential. Thank you.”

Switch on every day with a coffee from Furphy’s Coffee Lounge or pick one up on-the- go at the Furphy Street-Window on Military Road.

The Furphy Water Tanks were used to cart much needed H2o to Australian troops in military camps during the First World War. The drivers of the water tanks became notoriously known for their gossip and information to the troops, which at best was embellished and unreliable to keep the spirits of the troops high. This led to the word Furphy becoming a fixed part of the Australian language meaning rumour. At Merrylands RSL Club, we acknowledge our military history and thus are turning water into coffee with our Furphy Coffee Lounge.

FIRST GALLPOLI SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

CONTINUES ON TO BECOME MAYOR It’s been close to twenty years since Michelle Byrne was at Merrylands RSL Club as one of the first ever recipients of the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund. Since then she has been able to go on to obtain a PhD in drug resistance in cancer cells, worked a number of years in medical research, completed a law degree, is Mayor of The Hills Shire Council and a mother to twins. The Gallipoli Scholarship Fund was formed in 1996 at Merrylands RSL Club, by former member and World War II Veteran, Bill Hall. It commemorates the legacy of Australian servicemen and servicewomen who served in World War I or II. The Scholarship seeks to perpetuate among young Australians an understanding of those enduring traditions of perseverance, courage,

18

self-sacrifice and mateship that were established so indelibly in the cause of world peace at Gallipoli and thereafter on other battlefields in the First and Second World Wars. Michelle used the scholarship money to purchase text books and on other university expenses. This enabled her to focus on her studies without having to worry about how she was going to support herself financially. “I am grateful for the support the scholarship gave me and for giving me a head start with my career” said Michelle. Her great grandfather, Charles Henry Way, fought on the shores of Gallipoli and her grandfather, Leslie Charles Way, fought in Papua New Guinea during WWII and spent his entire career with the Army.

Sub Branch

SUB BRANCH Update As we welcome in the New Year, let us reflect on the successful events that were held in 2017. The 100 years of the ANZACs continued, with the Anzac Sunday held on 23rd April, followed by the Dawn Service on ANZAC Day 2017. The Dawn Service Anzac Reflection was given by students, Charlotte Stoddart & Alexander Nguyen from Greystanes Public School. Their presentation was an excellent one and well received by the large crowd in attendance. Please note as 2018 will be the end of the four years of hostilities, we are expecting larger than usual attendances to all of our Commemoration events during the year. Remembrance Sunday Service was held on the 5th November 2017 with the March commencing from the new front entry to Merrylands RSL Club. It then proceeded to Cumberland Council Chambers where a wreath was laid at the Cenotaph by RSL Club President Mr. Ron Hand & sub-Branch President Mr. Robin Grimley. This was followed by the Remembrance Service at Charles Mance Reserve, with. Our guest speaker Mr. Barry Gracey Legion D’Honneur spoke about the soldiers who paid the supreme Sacrifice in Pozieres, France. Not much has been said about them and it is his mission to ensure that they will not be forgotten. His presentation was excellent and well received by those in attendance. This was followed by a luncheon in the Swan Room which included great entertainment.

Local Schools Update:

In November 2017, we were very busy visiting our local schools. Hilltop Road Public School: We were Invited to their Premier Movie Night - “Pay it Forward”, where “Stan the Man” was presented with a book compiled by the students for his work with them over the years. We also attended their Remembrance Day Service. Guildford West Public School: MRSL & MRSL sub-Branch presented the school with a monument and plaque. The unveiling of the monument coincided with their Remembrance Day Service. Soil Collection in Merrylands for the ANZAC Memorial Centenary Project During November, we had a ceremony hosted by Julia Finn MP to collect a soil sample from the Merrylands Memorial Park in Arcadia Street, Merrylands which will be used in the refurbishment and expansion of the Hyde Park ANZAC Memorial. In attendance were officials from MRSL sub-branch, Cumberland Council andå students from local schools.

LEST WE FORGET NOTICE: sub-Branch fees for 2018 are due and can be paid at reception from 1 December 2017. As the sub-Branch has not had approval from RSL NSW State branch for subsidising membership fees, the fee payable will be $35.00. Should we get approval, overpayment of fees will be refunded. Legacy:

Remembrance Day Saturday 11th November 2017 Greystanes Public School conducted our Remembrance Day Service last year, which was held at Memorial Park, Treves Street Merrylands. The students did their school proud. Many thanks to the following: Julia Finn MP, Cumberland Council Deputy Mayor Cr. Eddy Sarkis, Holroyd SES, Schools and Colleges, and the general public for their attendance. Your contribution helped make it a very successful and memorable day.

The Committee has discussed assisting Legacy with donations and have obtained 2 more Legacy Tin Hats, which are placed one at each bar in the RSL Club. So please support Legacy by donating any loose change you have. “Gifted” Anchor update There have been a number of discussions with Cumberland Council regarding the location of our anchor. Plans are being drawn up for the plinth and support base. We have been advised we are proud owners of 90ft length of cable (chain) which will be (not all of it) used around the anchor. We are hoping to have it installed for next Remembrance Day. More updates to follow. Frank Vella Honorary Secretary
