The Catalan artist Antoni Tàpies’ life (1923–2012) was marked by existential questioning. Philosophers, religious thinkers, scientists, Old Masters and contemporary artists alike influenced his artistic practice. Tàpies’ impulse to collect stemmed directly from this fascination. Constantly seeking a link between the many cultures, geographies and epochs of humanity, his spiritual quest typified all his artistic preoccupations. The 2013 exhibition Tàpies. Lo sguardo dell’artista (The eye of the artist) at Palazzo Fortuny, Venice, presents a thoughtful selection of Tàpies’ own work in the broader context of his collection. The intimacy of the house of Mariano Fortuny, himself a kaleidoscopic collector, extends the dialogue. This book endeavors to convey the spirit of Tàpies’ art and his extraordinary eye as both an artist and a collector.

Imagine a museum in which the portrait of Carlotta Valdes, an important prop in Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, hangs on a wall next to the painted portrait of the title character of Otto Preminger’s Laura and opposite the uncanny portraits of the desired or murdered women in Fritz Lang’s Scarlet Street, George Cukor’s Gaslight, and Nicholas Ray’s Born to Be Bad. In an adjacent gallery, the visitor of this imaginary museum can contemplate the portraits of patriarchs that feature in films such as House of Strangers, Suspicion, Gilda, and Strangers on a Train. This is precisely the concept of this book. Dark Galleries deals with American (and some British) films of the 1940s and 1950s, in which a painted portrait plays an important part in the plot or the mise-en-scène. Particularly noir crime thrillers, gothic melodramas, and ghost stories feature painted portraits that seem to have a magical power over their beholders. Apart from an extensive introductory essay, this museum guide presents more than eighty entries on the artistic and cinematic aspects of noir painted portraits.

Edouard Léon Théodore Mesens (1903–1971) was a main figure in twentieth-century European art. He was known as the “talisman of surrealism”. Like a collage, his artistic vocation comprised various fragments: he was a composer, poet, publisher, photographer, exhibition maker and above all a passionate promoter of art. In the early 1920s E.L.T. MESENS played an active role in the European art scene, becoming friends with Tristan Tzara, Theo van Doesburg, Erik Satie and other artists. He appointed himself one of the driving forces of the surrealist movement. It was Mesens to whom René Magritte owed his international reputation and it was Mesens who introduced surrealism to the U.K. He surrounded himself with artists, including Roland Penrose, Lee Miller, Max Ernst, Kurt Schwitters, André Breton, Yves Tanguy and Man Ray. His life was entirely devoted to imagination and poetry. Discover l’amour fou in The Star Alphabet by E.L.T. MESENS.

Fostering a cross-pollination between the digital and the physical, Nick Ervinck (°1981, Belgium) explores the boundaries between various media. As a pioneer in 3D printed sculptures the artist takes a vanguard position in the field of digital technology while at the same time his works hold numerous references to the tradition of sculpture and architecture. This first monograph focuses on this tension between innovation and tradition and gives an inside to the artist’s abundant archive. The concepts body, building, history and nature that are crucial for the artist’s oeuvre, are the leitmotifs in the book. The authors explore Ervinck’s work from different angles while a great quantity of images show the genesis of form, some of his most succesfull works and futuristic ideas that till this day were impossible to create.

Contradictions is a critical biography of one of the oldest art academies in the world and the first monograph that is dedicated to its history. The Antwerp Royal Academy of Fine Arts was the result of an initiative by the Antwerp painter David Teniers the Younger. Its foundation in 1663 marked the beginning of a rich history that is being celebrated today. Fifteen experts were invited to write a chapter of this history. Their stories highlight different aspects of the academy’s foundation and its evolution through four centuries. The book kicks of with the 20th century and ends with the 17th, the 19th century being the turning point in the academy’s history. Attention is also given to the building history, the relationships with Antwerp and to the rise and breakthrough of the famous fashion department. Apart from many previously unpublished visual documents, the book contains a detailed chronology. Texts by Eric Ubben, Johan Pas, Hans Theys, Paul Illegems, Sarah Heynssens, Jan Lampo, Piet Lombaerde, Jozef Glassée, Saskia De Bodt, Katrien Dierckx, Peter van de Moortel, Dries Lyna, Griet Blanckaert, Veerle Stinckens, Beatrijs Wolters Van der Wey.

Rebel Rebels tracks a movement that has as yet not been historicized in Europe on the subject of AIDS activism by various artistic collectives in New York in the 1980s. The approach is historic, yet activist-based, and combines a look at graphic design, with social, political, art historical, and curatorial reflections. Rebel Rebels analyzes some of the activist art experiences born in New York between 1979 and 1989, when in response to a conservative political and cultural climate artists began to work in groups and to realize projects concretely addressed to the problems of society. The book is conceived as a tribute to all those activist art collectives born in New York City at the beginning of the 1980s, united by a common refusal of traditional aesthetic criteria, the synthesis of artistic strategies and commercial advertising for political propagandistic ends, and by a willingness to take direct action to end the AIDS crisis. Rebel Rebels aims at demonstrating that art can play a crucial role in social and political change, when artists gather in groups, or collectives, in order to cooperate with other communities and pursue a common goal.

Trying to be… is an artistic game initiated and performed by Emilio Lopez-Menchero, in which the artist puts himself into perspective by mimicking established artists such as Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso and so on. Throughout his artistic practice, Lopez-Menchero has also found a unique way to present his art via architecture, by actively using the public space, institutionalized spaces and so-called non-spaces within today’s society as his arena. These spaces form the backdrop for his frolic performances, his video’s, installations, drawings, paintings and artist books of which Trying to be… is the most recent.

HERFST 2013

In 2011, Goele De Bruyn travelled to China on the invitation of Jiawen Hou, artist and artistic director of Casuallocations Art Space in Beijing. The reason for the trip was a new presentation of Les Mains Sales, which Goele De Bruyn exhibited in 2010 at MAC’s, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Grand Hornu, Belgium. Les Mains Sales has a fairly long history. In 1998, Goele De Bruyn began collecting small remnants of bars of soap that she received from friends and family members. Today, this collection includes about 350 pieces. In response to Jiawen Hou’s invitation to present Les Mains Sales at Casuallocations Art Space, she decided to remake the entire project. A work that originally took ten years had to be completed in just a few weeks. By shifting the emphasis from saving and collecting the pieces of soap to actively looking for them in a country where the artist knows neither the language nor the customs, a completely new work is created. Wandering around Beijing’s old neighbourhoods, asking people for something as personal as an old piece of soap gives this new creation of the work an entirely new socio-anthropological dimension, which was not present in the original version.

A No Can Make Space is a book as a choreography. For this publication choreographer Daniel Linehan has gathered texts and poetic fragments, which he used as part of his choreographic practice. He organized these writings into several chapters according to their main themes: repetition, sequence, rhythm, value, change, tension, silence. A No Can Make Space is an artistic project of collecting and categorizing, a method Linehan often uses when making dance performances. Thus this book becomes a way to think about how making a book can be an extension of making a dance.

It is based on both the book ‘projet pour un livre. projet pour un film.’ by Nico Dockx and Helena Sidiropoulos (in its turn based on an unpublished catalogue of Marcel Broodthaers) published by RA in 2009 and a selection of raw photographic footage of an unfinished abandoned skytrain shot between August 2007 and January 2009 in Bangkok Thailand. Heidi Voet’s multi-disciplinary artistic practice is characterized by her playful and transformative use of objects to make critical social commentaries about everyday life. She transforms the banal into something wondrous, and in the process unearths concerns, connections and consequences that underlie the moment. Heidi Voet frequently deploys popular images or objects found in contemporary Chinese culture as central subjects in her works since her move to China in 2006. For one of her best-known series, Voet created elaborately patterned rugs by weaving thousands of colorful digital watches. The watches all have synchronized alarms, but inevitably malfunction and chime off beat over time creating an impromptu electronic sound installation. Photographs from “fine art” erotic magazines sold in corner stands around China have also served as a subject and source material in many of Heidi Voet’s works, in which the female body is reconfigured by way of the traditional art of Origami and assemblage. Delicately folded paper flowers are juxtaposed with building materials that are sometimes carved or stacked, evoking the fragility of the body in the face of the hysterical construction of today’s Mega cities.

Paper Kunsthalle, the Cylinder series, is not a real comic book series, but the idea is based on the structure of it. It fits perfectly to get Van de Moortel’s work published. The sketches, the colouring, the humour that feels close to the practice: it’s a work in itself and not just a representation of images. The artist prints one new Cylinder issue on the occasion of each new project or exhibition. Each cahier has a unique design and cover. Each will be published separately at first; becoming one book after 10 editions that will be published as a whole. Every edition is a new adventure having the same basic players, added, transformed. It’s one big playground: like a show. This is the fourth volume in the Cylinder series. The fifth is soon to come.

Belgian Solutions is an ongoing, open collection of photos, which is mainly, but not only, presented on Facebook. It was started in 2009 by David Helbich, who’s photos and title provide the core of the project. Since he opened it to the ‘public’, people responded massivly with own images. The collection is a random and endless publication, defined again and again by it’s current constellation; its ubiquitous title, leading to ever new significations. The pictures are numbered, partly in a random manner, partly in a cryptic relation to the image. Like this the framework of a series is suggested as well as undermined. Where these solutions might lead to is as unclear as the future of social online-networks, or for that matter of nation-states and how we deal within one or another.

In August 2009, cultural practitioners from around Asia and their ARTHUB ASIA-integrated, match-made peers from the rest of the world came together to discuss and reflect on the dynamic, ongoing echoes of the now-defunct Silk Road trading route and its multiple dimensions. As a four-day symposium, The Making of The New Silk Roads aimed to reassess the complex interconnections within Asia’s cultural and artistic spectrum at the beginning of the 21st century. This book summarizes the concerns and thoughts the symposium participants shared, while reflecting on the performative format of meeting that the symposium aimed to be. By extension, it serves as a memento of what its initiator ARTHUB ASIA-a not-for-profit multi-disciplinary platform of curatorial and artistic experimentation- has achieved in its first seven years of existence. The book appears in 4 chapters looking into the personalities, scenography, performance and documentation behind the alternative scheme of meeting that was put to the test in Bangkok and lies at the core of ARTHUB ASIA’s activities in Asia and world-wide.

MER. PAPER KUNSTHALLE

In the past years Sam Dillemans has painted some 300 portraits, mostly of influential writers, but also of scientists, composers and singers. In his typical dynamic and fluent style Dillemans completed the 300 portraits almost in one go. Most of the portraits are painted in black and white with smooth, volatile lines; others are touched up with some rare subtle brushstrokes in colour. Whether the subject is recognizable or not depends on the viewer and on how much the artists is prepared to divulge in his impressive paintings. Once more Dillemans has chosen to present an impressive series that centres on human beings, their faces and expressions. Some models are recognizable almost immediately, while others require an effort of the viewer. The result is a series of sometimes alarming portraits that compel us to observe intensely, explore the concept of portraiture and admire the smart faces Dillemans has gathered in these paintings in his typical style. design: Studio Luc Derycke 26,5 x 22,5 cm / 240 pp / HC / NL, ENG

The book ‘On connectivity’ offers readers some insight into the world of a2o-architects. It explains why a2o’s designs and buildings are connective. It connects the ‘now’ with the past and the future, with the importance of context and the autonomy of architecture. It connects engagement, craftsmanship and imagination in a contemporary way. The work of a2o-architects is situated in Belgium and the Meuse- Rhine Euroregion. a2o’s architecture occupies an area of tension between two realities, which also play a central role in this book: the main story, the leitmotiv, about its philosophy and the creative process. And the particular, the tangible, about contemporary themes and architecture. The two storylines are interwoven throughout the book, allowing text and images to make their own connections. This is a book about connectivity, about us dreaming about the perfect place to live or to work.

“L’architecture de Marc Corbiau propose des lieux priviligiés où l’espace et la lumière, grâce à une interaction fondamentale avec la nature qui l’entoure, jouent comme des miroirs entre l’extérieur et l’intérieur, créant un espace pour l’intimité de l’habitat. La sérénité née de la proportion des volumes, du minimalisme des formes et de l’utilisation de matériaux naturels, met en valeur l’echo harmonieux entre la vie et l’art, d’une beauté presque imperceptible”. Berlinde De Bruyckere’s work prompts the viewer to respond. That is why it has a particular appeal for writers of literature: they are fascinated by the compositions of distorted parts of humans and horses that refer to horror and comfort, to a cruel death and the sublime. De Bruyckere empties the bodies. Through holes, the public notices the darkness of a world inside that both appeals and repels. There is space around her work that resonates and in which writers can indulge in creativity—not by writing about objects, but by juxtaposing the work with creative texts. The author does not remove meanings of the work by trying to explain it, but rather adds to its meaning by responding to art with art. Nobel Prize winner J.M. Coetzee rises to this challenge: together with De Bruyckere he has chosen fragments from his impassioned and unsettling novels that are full of great beauty. Thus, the two present a composition of texts and images that from inside illuminates the dark world of their work.

S.M.A.K. presents the first major retrospective of the Belgian video artist Koen Theys (°1963, Brussels). Theys was one of the founding fathers of the Belgian video art scene since the early eighties and stood at the cradle of the discourse around video art in Belgium and by extension throughout Europe. In his work Theys combines a thorough substantive and formal research on video art as a medium, with a very expressive – referring to a baroque aesthetic – imagery, often combined with references to the European and Belgian cultural and political history. The work of Theys was collected early by MOMA (New York) and Centre Pompidou (Paris). The book will survey his monumental videoand photography-based works from the early 80s until now.

Jan Van Imschoot You can use my skin Jan Hoet

Love letters shape love. Werner Mannaers doesn’t write love letters, he paints them in his characteristic ‘bad painting’ style. During a certain time span, the painter created a Love Letter each day; the recipient of which was always a woman. Mannaers is in love with love; which makes his current series especially human: artists never shut up about (their) art, even when making love. The book Love Letters groups these paintings Mannaers made over time. Each Love Letter is effectuated using gouache on paper. They refer to some of Mannaers’ paintings that are currently in the making. Each Love Letter equally makes reference to other artists. This makes this publication more than a collection of recent Love Letters: the publication discreetly evolves towards a visual commentary on the history of modern art.

The book You can use my skin comes out at the occasion of the 50th birthday of the artist Jan Van Imschoot.

Comics were Van de Moortel’s first love: his first drawings, his first stories; a dwelling of fantasies and a lack of reality: he devored them as a child. His first publications with MER. This is the sequel to Cylinder # 1.

Norio Imai (° Osaka 1946) joined the avant-garde movement “Gutai Art Association” in 1965 and became their youngest member. Gutai was the most influential artists’ collective and artistic movement in postwar Japan and among the most important international avant-garde movements of the 1950s and ’60s. Imai creates a monumental, monochrome white silence in space. White is the ultimate colour, a non-colour combining all colours in perfect harmony. White is a full emptiness. Imai’s work goes beyond form and emanates a cosmic force. With his pure and still whiteness, he incorporates the true concepts of originality and creativity, what all Gutai members strived for.

The publication constitutes a vademecum catalogue for the joint exhibition Mots et monnaies, organized by the Fondation Martin Bodmer, the KIKPE Foundation and the Benaki Museum at the Bodmer Museum (Cologny, Geneva; November 2012–March 2013). In an original attempt, manuscripts and books are combined with coins, as well as with other artefacts, highlighting the intertwined relation between words and images. The focus is turned on legends, stories, traditions, persons and events which are echoed both on written/printed material and on numismatic material, in a fashion that shows how the two media resemble, differ and complement each other and how their messages were disseminated in human societies through the ages. This prestigious full colour catalogue contains a lavish photographic essay by photographer Laziz Hamani and is edited by Luc Derycke.

Lara Mennes has photographed three empty buildings. Her photographs raise questions about the meaning of these ruins and what they stand for today. The naked architecture, forgotten objects,… The photographs show what remains and therefore also that which is absent, which people thought was important enough to take with them. Her photographs focus on often small, insignificant things, traces of human activity, which draw Mennes’ attention because of what they suggest. Footprints on dusty floors, worn tiles, curled photographs, solitary posters on the wall… Every inhabitant of each building has added multiple layers of meaning, all of them now silent witnesses of bygone times. Like windows on the past, they take us back through time, back to the moment the building was constructed. Mennes’ photographs are still lifes in which objects transcend their physical appearance: they become expressions of memories.

Scattering of the Fragile Cherry Blossoms An van. Dienderen & Lisa Spilliaert Essay by Trinh Minh-ha AraMER April 2013 ISBN 978 94 9069 391 6 € 19,5

The book ik wordt runs parallel to the exhibition of the same title – it is as such not a record of the exhibition – the book exists as exhibition. The title ik wordt (I become) refers to the drawing of the same title by Johan De Wilde and to the request he addressed at 300 people to take part in a solo exhibition by associating something with one or several of his works. All texts and images, and an equal number of fragments from the Sistine Chapel ceiling fresco – a reference to an in situ work by the artist – are depicted in the book in their mutual relationship. One of the questions the artist raises, is how the work of art (and therefore also the artist) relate as form and contents to the outside world, including when it is not being looked at (at nighttime, or when the museum is closed, or when the work is stored away in the museum depot). Another issue entails a critical approach to the viewer’s participation. According to De Wilde, art only exists if it is created all over again. The artist thus argues in favour of the museum and real commitment.

Translation is generally regarded as a secondary phenomenon, with the interpreter hidden behind the speaker. Paradoxically is that interpreters are regarded as furniture, while they are allowed to the most secret conversations. The European Union maintains a special position in the world of translation: while the United Nations make do with six working languages, the EU uses 23 languages. This book thematizes the subject of European translation booths in a photographic way. Attention is given to the cross-over between documentary and fiction, the relationship between representation and abstraction, and between images and research results. The book is accompanied by an essay by Trinh Minh-ha.

In this book the artist Kristof Van Gestel focuses on the role of art in his life – not just any art, but the art he creates himself – and the experiences that result from his art practice. The artist describes how the quest for meaning when making art helps him to discover ways individual people create meaning in general and lend meaning to the world that surrounds them in particular. Thus for Van Gestel making art acquires a more profound meaning both at a personal and a social level. In his book Van Gestel also describes the various ways in which a work precisely acquires meaning: through relating to space, through the (everyday) use of the medium, through its lingualism, through its sharing a language, through the body and through intuition.

In the mid-sixties, a young Belgian-American experimental/visual poet, Alain Arias-Misson, returned to his birthplace Brussels, which his family had fled during World War II for New York. Back in Brussels the poet initiated his well-known “public poems”, which predate the genre performance and are all up to today different from one another and never repeated. For Arias-Misson, the street is the page upon which the poem can be drawn. The city can be construed as a text. It is a focal point of socio-political signs, and its syntax and semantics can be made ‘legible’ by introducing highly graphic, linguistic and non-linguistic clues in the street. Arias-Misson’s public poems are always specific to the urban setting, and to the political moment in which they were created. His poems are sometimes presented in dreamlike sequences, often provoking ‘public disorder’ in cities throughout Europe as well as forays into New York and Los Angeles.

This publication is an ode to the wind, to unseen energy and the space in-between. It is the first survey of Ida Barbarigo’s (°1920, Italy) work from 1959 ‘till 1964, supplemented with her most recent work. The book contains a moving essay by Giovanna Dal Bon in which she introduces the reader to Barbarigo’s work in a poetic way. The book also brings together many unpublished historic photographs that were discovered in the archives of Ida Barbarigo and her belated husband Zoran Music.
