THE TROCAIRE SOCIETY | $20,000 and above
Trocaire is the Gaelic word for Mercy. Catherine McAuley defined Mercy as a “vivacious generosity of spirit…a gift given in response to a need.”
Catherine McAuley, foundress of the Sisters of Mercy, continually addressed the needs of those in her community. Whether their needs were educational, physical, or spiritual, Catherine was a witness to the merciful presence of God in our world. Inspired by Catherine’s commitment to cultivate Mercy in the lives of others, Merion Mercy designates our highest annual giving level to respond to the needs of our 21st-century teaching and learning community at Merion Mercy.
The Trocaire Society sustains these works through exceptionally generous donations that support the greatest needs of MMA. As Merion Mercy Academy’s leading donor group, the following donors are honored for their extraordinary commitment to Merion Mercy by giving gifts of $20,000 or more. “During my time at MMA more than 45 years ago, I always felt valued, loved, and secure. Over the years, I have felt very close to the Sisters of Mercy and Mercy education both through my affiliation with MMA and Waldron Mercy. It has always been important to me to support these institutions that have provided an outstanding education to me as well as my children. During these past months of COVID-19, civil unrest and heightened social injustice issues, it is more important than ever to help support an environment that provides safety, security, and right values that will build a foundation for our young people and in turn a better world for everyone to live in. Continuing the tradition of Catherine McAuley through my donations is my way of making a difference for the future of our young people.”

Bernadette and Larry Gallone, P’22
For current parents Bernadette and Larry Gallone, parents of Katie Gallone ’22, their reason for giving to MMA is simple: “We gladly support Merion because it provides more than an unmatched education for our daughter Katie. Merion embodies the values we treasure and provides a caring and supportive community. Merion is truly a community of Mercy.”

Ann Scattergood McDevitt ’55, P’78, GP’10 a “My life goals are guided by the Winston Churchill quote, ‘We make a life by what we give.’ The Sisters of Mercy educated me for twelve years some 65 years ago. During all that time, I have tried to ‘give back’ some of that beautiful education in many different ways. Most recently, I have been volunteering with Hope Partnership for Education, led by the Sisters of Mercy in North Philadelphia, serving as a Social Studies teacher for the past eight years.
As the Coronavirus has disrupted classroom learning, Hope continues to pioneer new ways. The Sisters gave me the freedom to envision a new way to reach our adult students ’virtually.’ I’m now Zooming PowerPoint presentations. Just like the little engine that could, my Mercy education keeps on giving.
When the appeal came from MMA to help current students whose tuition was problematic because of COVID-19, I was happy to help. Because I teach adults in North Philly who are struggling like some Merion families, it was important to me to make sure that those students were able to continue their education. It’s just another way for me to give to those who want so much to learn. It’s the Mercy way.”

“Growing up, my sister, Dr. Racquel David ’87, and I watched our parents donate and give back to their medical school in the Philippines. I wanted to follow their example and show my gratitude to Merion Mercy, my alma mater.
At MMA, I developed a love for the media and languages I formed lifetime friendships, was challenged academically, and was supported the entire time by Merion teachers and staff. Merion Mercy prepared me well for my college years at Vassar. I majored in Spanish and spent a semester Junior year in Santiago de Compostela and Madrid.

“I give to Merion Mercy Academy to support our students today and to nurture our amazing community so that others can share in the experience I had at MMA. As a student, Merion meant a great deal to me, and it still does today, not only because of the treasured friendships I formed there, but because I still hold the Mercy values deep in my heart.
My journey of Mercy continued with our daughter Caitlin ’13. She too had an exceptional experience at MMA—combining instruction, inspiration, and encouragement— to develop and grow to be a woman of faith, to master leadership skills, and to be a passionate, lifelong learner. ”
