Subrina Hossain Editor-in-Chief What aspect of your personality benefits you most as Editor-In-Chief? I’m personable. I’m organized. I love working with people. I possess leadership skills but making sure everyone knows they are an integral part of the team is my first priority. If Anna Wintour is to bobbed hair and sunglasses, you are to... My neon pink Mood tote bag that contains my life… and a statement necklace. When you want to feel powerful, what do you wear? Heels. Last summer I wore heels every day for my NYC internship. Wearing flats now makes me (ironically) uncomfortable.

Ashley Nudge Creative Director What do you enjoy the most about your role as Creative Director? Seeing a creative vision come to life is one of the most incredible feelings. I love working with a team of talented people to develop something magical. What’s your personal creative manifesto? Creativity takes courage since it’s all about trial and error. Be patient. Have a plan of action, but be flexible enough to experiment. There are no rules, only endless sources of inspiration. Dream magazine to be Creative Director for? American Vogue. Grace Coddington is my hero.

Nichole Fallis Fashion Director

T H E T E A M

What’s your fashion motto? Be a strange stitch in a sea of straight seams! Have you ever worn anything you regretted? Yes, anything that has been either too tight or too itchy! Who’s your dream person to style? Mette Lindberg.

Avery Hastings Photography Director What’s your favorite thing from the 60’s? The music. My favorite band, Haim, gives a modern twist to 60’s rock. Who’s your dream subject? I’d love to do a minimalistic shoot in the desert with models dressed in clothes that focus on quality. A simplistic shoot that would allow me to play with lighting and movement. What brought on your love of photography? When I was little I had a deep fear of not remembering things. At age nine I took photos with disposable cameras to capture certain moments, and the rest is history.

Colton Johnson Art Director When you were a kid, what was your biggest dream? Honestly, I really wanted to be a cowboy. I didn’t care it was the 90’s, I wanted to ride a horse everywhere and wear spurs and stuff. What’s your artistic style? I enjoy using basic geometry to make the shapes in the image. For example to draw a face I would break it up into small triangles, ink it out and throw some paint on there. Boom. Art? Do you have any body art? What is it? I have a rose cluster on my arm that reads “Never let me go” and an octopus named Oswald covering my right thigh.

Hunter Herrera PR Director What’s your personal brand? Be yourself. Be fearless. In the competitive world of fashion, you have to stay motivated. Go for what you’re most passionate about. Do you have a PR icon you admire? I admire Kim Cattralls’s character, Samantha Jones, in Sex and the City. She’s powerful, outgoing, and bold. We share those same qualities. What’s a pet peeve you have about first impressions? SMILE! Have a good attitude. Nothing annoys me more than when someone brings outside drama to the workplace.

r

Mackenzie Legg Photography Assistant Who’s your favorite photographer? Sebastian Kim. What brought on your love of photography? My best friend Savannah used to take me on her shoots to help and model. This inspired my love of photography and visual arts. What inspires you? My parents inspire me! They always push me to pursue what makes me happy and be my best.

Rose Kuo Art Assistant What do you love about art? Art can be simple but complicated at the same time, and can help people express their feelings through colors, shapes and lines. Art can be so much more than just a canvas hanging on your bedroom wall. What’s your artistic style? My style is sophisticated. I like design that is filled with details… designs that are like reading a never-ending book What inspires you? The Internet… just all the amazing ideas from people around the world!

Maia Wilson Home & Lifestyle Features Editor What’s your favorite room in your home? My room! It’s my own space to relax, get work done, and be inspired. Plus it’s the one place I can decorate however I want. What’s your life motto? If a girl wants to be a legend, she should go ahead and be one. If you could live anywhere, where would you live? New York for the action and opportunities. Spain for the beauty.

Erin Hall Fashion Features Editor

Shannon Williams Fashion Features Editor

What’s your go-to fashion piece? My gold nameplate necklace. Who’s your style icon? Emily Schuman, blogger of Cupcakes and Cashmere. One piece of style advice for our readers? Let your style stay true to who you are, don’t be afraid to be unique.

What’s your go-to fashion piece? I have an obsession with black and white stripes. Rarely do I come home from shopping without one striped item. Who is your fashion inspiration? Audrey Hepburn’s classic and effortless style. One piece of style advice for our readers? Try out a different style for a day. You may find interesting ways to incorporate it into your standard look.

Zoe Gomez Beauty Features Editor

What’s your go-to beauty look? Winged liner and a bold lip. What’s your favorite lip color? A raspberry shade. It’s flattering on all skin tones and can be worn all year round. Do you have a makeup pet peeve? What is it? When people forget to blend foundation onto their necks, leaving an awkward line.

Lindsey Lotze Tech Features Editor What’s your favorite app? I’m a huge film buff so I love that the IMDb app allows me to find quality films to watch, look up actors bios, and read critic reviews. What’s a website you’re obsessed with? MyHabit.com is an interior decorating wonderland that tempts me to buy all sorts of knick-knacks for our apartment. What do you think is great about digital? The fact that my phone can guide me to anywhere I desire to go. I can’t fathom how I’d get anywhere on time if we still had to use paper road maps.

A LETTER FROM THE EDITOR NuView was a butterfly completely comfortable in it’s cocoon. Fortunately, we’ve escaped our old ways and here we are now, restructured, revamped, and reborn. We have an audience that needs to be seen, heard, and spoken to (you!), we have content that’s written by people who get you (because who understands college students better than, well, college students?), and we have a team who continues to show me how passionate they are about this little project that has now become something bigger.

When I started thinking about the possibility of NuView two years ago, it seemed like the perfect outlet to showcase student talent and a way to show off the greatness that is Merchandising Inc. As the first year progressed into the second, we added team positions, executed some amazing editorials, interviewed really cool people, and shared interesting news on exciting topics. While the publication was something to be proud of, in reality, the old NuView needed a lot of work. Fast-forward to about two months ago, when I was discussing ways to improve NuView with a close friend. In the midst of jotting down her ideas, I thought, “finally.” The moment you find someone whose creative vision complements your own editorial one is a beautiful thing. I realized then what I already knew somewhere deep down. We were holding ourselves back. We were too afraid to even attempt to be the next big thing even though we had the talent and the power to do so.

NuView is not a typical magazine. We’re not a fashion magazine filled with advertisements featuring clothes we can’t afford or editorials with models we all secretly envy. We’re definitely not a guide on how to get through college (because the beauty of college is the spontaneity of it, not a step-by-step guide). Simply put, NuView is all the things we, as college students, believe in, hope for, and obsess over. NuView is your destination for college lifestyle content, made by the people who not only live the lifestyle, but also understand it. Each issue of NuView will have a distinct theme and our theme for March is “Escape”. Rightfully chosen since Spring Break is coming up soon (but never soon enough) and we all need a break. But there’s definitely more to theme, like that moment when you got your college acceptance letter and your first thought was, “I get to live on my own? Hallelujah!” or that moment when you found your calling and you no longer had to answer the “So what are you going to do with your life?” question. And, of course, the moment we escaped our little cocoon so that we could be the new and improved, NuView. Enjoy the issue.

Shannon Williams

ESCAPE INTO THE WORLD OF SARA BENNACK Fashion Features editor, Shannon Williams, sat down with undergrad design student, Sara Bennack, to discuss her inspirations and methods of escape, which are magically one and the same. What first got you interested in design? I have been drawing and sketching for years. In high school I started sketching flats of clothes I owned or saw in stores. This really sparked my interest in design. I had a teacher that introduced me to the world of high fashion and all of its intricacies. I fell in love with it and decided that this was what I wanted to do. Where do you get your inspiration? I get a lot of my inspiration from nature and music. I went on a road trip to Colorado and was really inspired by the scenery. Road trips are a great place to get inspiration from. I also like to listen to music and think about what that song or sound would look like as a garment and then translate it into one. I like to listen to fashion show soundtracks, mostly instrumental; they always have really strong looks associated with them. A lot of your designs have elements of nature in them, what about nature speaks to you? I grew up in the country surrounded orchards and fields. I have really come to appreciate natural colors and shapes. I really like to look at the silhouettes to get a feel about how things form and fall naturally. When the weather is good, I love to be outside either sketching or reading. How do you escape from daily life? Pretty much everything that I get inspiration from helps me escape. If I’m not in the mood for designing I’m usually listening to classic rock from the 50’s- 80’s, but I really listen to everything but country. I sometimes get lost on Tumblr. I post a lot of travel and nature images. Tumblr can actually be motivating for me, I’ll see things I like and be inspired by them. Sketching and art helps me escape sometimes. I have to be in the mood for it, but when I am, I spend hours and really get into it. If you could do anything what would it be? Travel to as many places as possible. I would love to go backpacking through Asia; I think it would be a really great experience. I would really like to visit Japan and Indonesia. I’ve met some people from those countries and they are really interesting.

MAIA WILSON

A SPANISH GETAWAY After graduating from UNT, travel blogger, Erica Connolly, departed from her PR job and followed her instincts to live an entirely new lifestyle in Spain.

What was everyone’s reaction when you told them you wanted to move to Spain? I had a job lined up in Public Relations, but I also knew I wanted to live abroad. I knew the logical thing was to take the job, but the heart was saying go, go, go follow your dreams! All of my friends were saying that it this was a once in a life time opportunity, but my parents wanted me to take the job, so I worked there for three months. I said I was going to give it a try and be fair. Finally at the end of the summer I decided [living in Spain] is what I wanted to do.

What made you want to switch to be an English teacher in Spain, rather than continue to pursue a position in Public Relations? It’s not that I wanted to be a teacher, but I found a really great and easy job and it was a great excuse to get a Visa and live abroad. We only work 16 hours a week, 4 days a week, which is a really good deal. They pay us pretty well and I just play games and teach them about things we have in the US that they don’t celebrate here. So I get it to be the fun teacher!

How difficult was it leaving everything you knew in Texas, then going to a whole new country? Beforehand, I was saying yeah I got this! But I remember the moment it hit me was when we landed in Madrid. And I was sitting there and suddenly I was sweating and I was like oh my God I don’t have a home, I don’t speak Spanish very well, I don’t have anything. The first 2 weeks were the hardest- from trying to get internet, a bank, a phone, a place to live- it was an adventure!

What has been the most exciting thing you have been able to do in Spain? Boy, there’s so much! Just living here in Madrid, it gives me so many opportunities to see more of Europe. Just in 2 years, we’ve seen 15 new countries. Traveling is so cheap here that it is easy just to get out and go every weekend. I would also say, before living here I was a really picky eater, so coming over here I’ve tried so many new foods and really expanded my willingness to try new things.

What made you want to start your own blog? I’ve had my blog since 2009 (when I was a freshman in college) and I just did it as a place I can look back at, because I’ve always enjoyed writing. Then I saw that travel blogging was a thing. I became really inspired by one called Camel and Chocolates by Kristin Luna, She motivated me to take my blog a little more serious and write longer posts solely about traveling, places I’ve been, or funny stories. Once I came over here it became a way for people at home to keep up with what I’m doing. And when this adventure ends, I can look back at. What has been the hardest challenge of writing a travel blog? I am bad about comparing what I have to other people’s blogs. And then the motivation to be constantly writing because I know if I want to have a good site I need to be writing all the time. I don’t want to just write to write something, I want to write because I feel inspired or I want to talk about something specific. What advice do you have for our readers in regards to taking on an unconventional job position whether that is in a different country or something most people wouldn’t consider? A huge lesson for me is that if scares it you, then it’s a good thing to try- just because this [experience] has changed me as a person and it’s boosted my confidence. The amount of lessons and experiences you can have by trying something new or doing something a little unconventional is amazing. And it’s made me less afraid to take risks.

AN APARTMENT AS SOPHISTICATED AS THE GIRL

When I first entered Shannon William’s apartment I noticed: lighted candles of vanilla scent, deep wooden furniture strategically placed, and an abundance of shoes anywhere there’s storage space. This fashion merchandising major proves a place to yourself can be the ultimate retreat… that is, if you style it right! Her personal style comes from a feminine place and her apartment definitely reflects that. Williams’ shops mostly at TJ Maxx, Marshalls, and Ross for home décor and Forever 21 for apparel, so you never would’ve thought she and her apartment could look this put together on such an affordable budget. Shannon states she has a habit of saying, “I need all these things!” whenever she goes shopping, “even though I really don’t”. This is a common problem amongst fashion-lovers, but Shannon clearly has a love for black and white striped shirts (she has 14!) and shoes (working at DSW Shoes has its perks). As I brought up her job at DSW she pulled out a shoebox from under her bed and excitedly whispered, “I love these shoes! I got them at the end of the summer, and I only had a month to wear them.” Although her closet is one I wouldn’t mind trading with, she says she would love to have blogger/model Chiara Ferragni’s closet, “actually I want her life, not just her closet!” Downstairs, she states her desk is a place where she spends a lot of time, but it doesn’t always feel like she’s working and her kitchen goes to good use with the cooking she likes to do. “I try to eat healthy...I cook a lot of Asian foods.” After exploring Shannon’s place, it’s obvious she appreciates the freedom of having her own apartment. “It’s just nice to have a place to come back to that’s 100% mine.”
