From the President’s Desk By Ian Gleadle, Seattle Section President What a treat this summer has been for the Mercedes car enthusiast. If you have had a chance to attend even one of the events that has been recapped in this newsletter, you will have viewed some amazing classics, experienced members’ pride of ownership, and taken tours off the beaten path. We have to thank Brown Maloney, Rudi Koniczek, and Siegfried Linke for sharing the highlights of their private collections with us and to thank each member who brought their beauty out to the 2012 Regional Show & Shine so that we can appreciate the quality and styling that Mercedes-Benz has produced over the years. As I watched a 1936 540 K Special Roadster sell at the Gooding Auction in Monterey for $10.8 million in August, I have to wonder if an investment

in a quality Mercedes is better than investing in gold? Upcoming events promise to add to your owner experience. Come celebrate your membership in the MBCA – Seattle Section at the Member Appreciation Banquet & AGM on September 8th at the Emerald Queen Hotel & Casino in Fife. Board members are planning a “flashy” fun event. Also, plan on attending the tour of the beautiful Wenatchee Valley on October 13th. We have ordered one of our gorgeous Indian Summer days just for this event. And while you are marking up your calendar, add December 9th as the tentative date for our holiday Candy Cane Caravan, back by popular demand. We are working up a new route for this year’s drive and will plan for a cold, crisp blue sky day that we can get in December. I have probably jinxed the weather by even mentioning it, but it can happen and we’ll hope for the best!

The events this summer provided opportunities for your Board to talk with other Section board members in San Francisco, Portland and Vancouver Island and even for some of us to meet with Gary Anderson, the editor of The Star magazine. It has given us ideas for new events and combined events in 2013 and we are even looking at hosting a Star Fest in Tacoma in the next couple of years. An event of this level takes intense planning, tons of volunteers, support from all of the Northwest sections, and sponsorships from local businesses. We have a great start with the connections we made this summer, and if you are interested in being in the planning stages of this project, please contact Tony Andrews at clktony@gmail.com. Until then, safe driving, enjoy the rest of your summer and hope to see you at an upcoming event!

Now is the time to cast your vote. All active Seattle Section members are entitled to vote for board members. Our by-laws permit only one vote per membership. Current board members whose terms expire in 2012, Rick & Patti Tuttle and Tony Andrews, have expressed interest in remaining on the board. Also, be sure to mark your ballot if you plan on attending the banquet and mail your ballot and check for $20 per person made payable to MBCA – Seattle Section to Jim Houk, PO Box 810, Silverdale, WA. 98383. Our annual holiday event this year will be the Candy Cane Caravan, back by popular demand, instead of a formal sit down event, so this Member Appreciation Banquet will be the time to bring out the party clothes, gather with old friends and new, and celebrate one of the many benefits of belonging to the MBCA Seattle Section. Practice your photobooth poses, wear your best smile, and don’t forget to say “Cheese”! We’ll capture the moment and send you home with photos to remember. We look forward to a memorable event!

Forest Grove Concours Wrap-Up Mercedes Stage at Concours

Takes Center Forest Grove

By Ian Gleadle & Allen Stephens Over 55 Mercedes-Benz, including a large gathering of SLs, were on display at the 40th Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance, an annual fundraising event for the local Rotary. As both a Rotary Club member and President of the MBCA Portland Section, Allen Stephens made it his mission to connect with club members up and down the west coast to provide an exciting display of the Mercedes marque for the weekend’s activities centered around the Pacific University campus. The Vineyard and Lake Tour on Saturday July 14th attracted over 50 cars, including a nice sampling of 300SL roadsters and gullwings. We toured to Elk Cove Vineyards for lunch, then on to Hagg Lake for rides in vintage wooden boats. The tour concluded at a Sake brewery for the ceremonial toast and ribbon ceremony. Concours Sunday began with a slight drizzle of rain in the Portland area,

however it was sunny and dry in Forest Grove. The display of Mercedes automobiles included Sedans, Coupes, Cabriolets, SLs, and the popular MBCA

personal overview of the history and features of this rare automobile by Hans Wurl, the manager of Mr. McCaw’s collection. Other SLs in the display included the 1955 300SL owned by Jim and Kay Cobb, the 1962 190SL owned by Ian and Linda Gleadle, and the gorgeous 1955 300SL Gullwing, in white with red interior, owned by Brown and Sara Maloney. Gordon Joelson and Ernie Brawley both displayed 300SL roadsters. Ron Gotcher brought a 2012 SLS AMG with glossy black paint. It was a nice contrast to the vintage black 1956 300SL Gullwing displayed by Pat Matthews.

Display Class. Walt Tabrum entered his newly-restored 1960 220SE Coupe – looking elegant in black paint. Justin Englund and Doug Middlestetter also brought Ponton-bodied Mercedes. Rufus Aylwin displayed a really nice 1963 300SE cabriolet, and Mike Spicer showed his maroon 280SE 3.5 coupe. The classes for Mercedes-Benz SLs had many very nice examples. The feature car was the 1952 300SL W194 that won at LeMans in ’52, owned by Seattle Section member, Bruce McCaw. Section members were given a

Of the “Pagoda” style SLs. Bill and Pat Lindquist took first in class with their 1968 280SL. John Neiger took second with his father, Ron’s, 280SL. The class was rounded out by a pristine 1971 350SL owned by Jim Houk and Alan Ball’s 1991 300SL. To complete the “60 Years of the SL” display, Mercedes-Benz of Wilsonville displayed a brand-new 2013 SL550. The Best in Show trophy was awarded to Ron Rezek’s 1937 Lagonda, in an elegant green color. Beautiful automobiles displayed on a beautiful day. It was Allen Stephen’s father who started the Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance 40 years ago. Allen should be proud of the level of organization, hospitality and the incredible display. Seattle Section members who attended thank him for the opportunity to share ideas, wish lists, stories and questions among fellow enthusiasts. It was an excellent weekend of events and we highly recommend that Seattle Section members put it on their calendar for next year! SEPTEMBER · OCTOBER 2012

Sequim Garage Tour Review David and Joan Glass Seattle Section MBCA was joined by friends from Portland and British Columbia Sections, as well as the Portland BMW Club on June 23 for a delightful day of driving, picnicking, and enjoying a personal collection of classic automobiles and motorcycles.

44 cars gathered in Port Gamble, WA on a grassy field provided by Port Gamble Weddings, with a hilltop view of Hood Canal. What an impressive sight these German cars made. After a safety discussion, Renate and Heinz Streng led the caravan on the hour tour of the Olympic Peninsula, driving some interesting roads not normally travelled by the group. All completed the drive, partly thanks to Linda and Ian Gleadle who followed the procession watching for stragglers and taking pictures along the way.

Once at the Maloney home, the cars were arranged on the lawn for another impressive sight along the curved wall and under the massive trees. Sara and Brown Maloney welcomed the 88 participants and provided a little of the history of their home and collections. They were presented a custom photograph of Brown with his 300SL automobiles, as a Thank You for hosting this event.

participated. Plenty of time was provided for questions and discussion. Judging from the smiles and gracious comments, a good time was had by all. We owe a big Thank You to Sara and Brown for sharing your home and hospitality. We look forward to the next visit.

Everyone then enjoyed a BBQ picnic including custom cupcakes with Mercedes-Benz stars and BMW roundels provided by Sara and Brown. After lunch, Brown led an interactive tour of his garages including a half dozen Mercedes-Benz and other classic automobiles, and his fabulous

Technically Speaking ML320 / E320 Creamy Oil on the Oil Filler Cap By Jerry Cole, Technical Advisor When it comes to the E320 or ML320 that use the M112 engine, I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have heard reports of white, creamy oil on the bottom of the oil filler cap. "You have a blown head gasket" and "Don't worry about it, they all do that" are the popular answers. The truth is, a blown head gasket on the M112 engine is very unlikely and there is something you can do about it. If the oil on the dip stick looks good and the oil looks good when it is drained, then it is most likely plugged EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) vent holes on the top of the valve covers. It's a relatively easy and inexpensive fix; a far cry from a blown head gasket. As the engine warms up, moisture from the crankcase rises to the valve covers, the highest point in the engine. In normal operation, the moisture is sucked away

through the EGR hoses that attach to the top of each valve cover. Even though the hoses are about 15 mm in diameter, the vent hole in the valve cover where the hose attaches is only about 2—3 mm. They plug easily, especially in a vehicle that sees a lot of short-hop driving. The fix is a relatively simple DIY job. If you'd feel comfortable changing your own brake pads, you can probably handle this job without a problem. Buy new EGR rubber hoses before you start. They will be dried out and you'll be glad you have the new ones. Also, have a tube of high temp Form-A-Gasket or

equivalent handy. On the top of each valve cover is a smaller, rectangular cover. Remove the screws from the rectangular cover and unplug the rubber hoses. Gently pry the rectangular cover free of the valve cover, being careful not to distort it. You will notice that there is no gasket, only rubber sealant. That's where the Form-A-Gasket comes in. You will also notice that the underside of the cover is filthy and there is no little hole visible where the EGR hose plugs in. Completely clean the rectangular cover of grime and old sealant, or take it to a machine shop and let them put it in their parts washer. Once clean, you will see the small hole for the EGR hose. If it is still plugged, you can carefully clear it with a small drill bit held in your fingertips. Do not remove any aluminum or make the hole any larger. Reassemble, making a neat bead of Form-A-Gasket where you removed the old sealant. The rubber EGR hoses will have symbols at the ends showing location and orientation. Last but not least, enjoy a properly functioning EGR system and feel the joy of knowing it really wasn't a blown head gasket.
