REFOCUS, RESET, RESTRUCTURE

Major improvements are in the making for Seawork 2023. Following a challenging year where compromises had to be made as result of the Covid pandemic decimating the exhibition sup ply chain, Seawork 2023 provides us with a great opportunity to refocus and reset for the future.

The welcome move to a new supplier, whose client list includes Chelsea Flower Show, Goodwood, Paris Air Show, COP26, and the G7, means Seawork has now contracted with one of the best and biggest structures companies in Europe to provide new halls for next year’s 24th edition of Seawork

Seawork 2023 will effectively be in two large halls, running East to West, replacing the seven small halls this year.  The goal is to provide a more open, airy feel, improving the visual and environmental experience for both exhibitors and visitors alike.

The new structures comprise 50-metrewide spans and include opaque roof skins, better air handling and better floors. Traffic flow and navigation will also improve with Visitor Registration and the Conference Rooms integrated into the main Halls.

It’s not just the landside that is undergoing a facelift, the ever-popular pontoons will be boasting new stands afloat. The Seawork team has

been working with the new contractors to come up with a solution for on-the-water exhibitors that may need some additional undercover exhibition space next to their vessels or floating plant. The new stands provide an opportunity for exhibitors to complement their floating display with a hospitality or exhibition stand.

The site-wide investment is set to significantly improve the Seawork Experience for everyone. With further improvements and new innovations to be announced over the next few weeks, including details of ‘Eat Street’ catering, the course looks to be set fair for Seawork 2023.

KEEPING IT CLOSE

Summer is well and truly over and the new custom pontoon at Brownsea Island, Dorset UK has completed its first season in-situ for the John Lewis Partnership. Built to order, this was Manor Marine’s first order from Southampton-based pontoon specialist Intermarine Ltd.

Construction of the 13-metre steel tubular pontoon commenced in April 2022 and was delivered to the Brownsea Island site the following month, serving as access for visitors travelling to Brownsea Castle on the island.

Shorter timescale refit and construction

projects are new areas of focus for the Dorset-headquartered Manor Marine as they fit in nicely around the company’s vessel construction programme which is naturally more time-intensive.

Leif Cooper, Managing Director at Manor Marine said, “We’re extremely pleased to have provided fabrication services to Intermarine Ltd for their Brownsea Island pontoon project. We have built many steel pontoons over the years, but this was our first with Intermarine Ltd and it has been great to be assisting with a Dorset-based Project”.

Spotlight on IJUBOA

Seawork supporter IJUBOA, the International Jack-Up Barge Operators Association, was formed in 2008 with a mission to “set, sustain and promote standards for the safe and effective operation of self-elevating platforms throughout the world”

IJUBOA has three strategic goals: To promote a safe industry – safe for its people, for the environment and for society at large

To promote a learning industry – with the skilled and professional workforce essential for the safe and efficient operation of jack up barges

To promote a reputable industry – responsive to the needs of its customers and committed to continuous improvement.

Underpinning its goal of industry education, IJUBOA has a suite of training courses which have been developed to meet the needs of individuals working within the industry including, not surprisingly, the Jack-up Barge Familiarisation Course.

The one-day workshop covers the general safety aspects of over water working as well as an introduction to working with Jack-up Barges and associated marine plant. Topics include Marine Plant and Equipment Familiarisation, General Safety Aspects of Overwater Working and Good Practice, PPE and Emergency Response Drills, Rules, Regulations, Skills and Competence

Jack-up barges are vital components in many marine civils projects - IJUBOA is able to assist marine civils contractors and associated parties with information and guidance and can even help organise a Jack-up Barge Familiarisation Days.

CECA READY TO DELIVER

Civils contractors have said that the Chancellor’s decision to protect capital spending in his Autumn Statement shows confidence in the ability of UK infrastructure to deliver economic growth.

In his Autumn Statement the Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt MP said his three growth priorities were energy efficiency, investment in infrastructure, and innovation

Furthermore, despite the UK

Government’s £55 billion fiscal consolidation, Mr Hunt confirmed that the UK Government’s investment in a new nuclear power station at Sizewell C, as well as investment in HS2, Northern Powerhouse Rail, and East West rail, will go ahead.

Commenting, Chief Executive of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Alasdair Reisner said, “In recent months CECA has campaigned to ensure the continuation of existing programmes

INTRODUCING CLOUD TANK

The goal for new Seawork exhibitor Cloud Towing Tank is to bring the best of Computational Fluid Dynamics to the marine industry; calculating specific hydrodynamic problems and minimising the possibility of a human error.

Ascertaining that a marina or a harbour will be well protected from oncoming waves is a difficult job. In certain cases, special solutions are needed and it can be difficult to rely on best practice guidelines. Coastal engineering simulations using CFD can offer a high-resolution insight into the weak points of the project, whilst taking into account all relevant phenomena.

Bottom-fixed structures, floating structures that are sailing by or that are moored (such as pontoons), can all be modelled in a single CFD simulation. The interaction of floating and sailing objects through their generated and reflected wave fields is fully resolved. Wind waves can be generated, whether they are irregular, directional or regular waves, to offer a realistic simulation that encapsulates all of

the worst-case scenarios.

During the simulation all relevant physical quantities are monitored, such as wave elevation at arbitrary locations, motion signals of any floating objects, forces in mooring lines, velocity profiles

of investment.

“The Chancellor has confirmed that our message – that cutting capital spending would ultimately be counter-productive for economic growth – has cut through in Whitehall.

“While we recognise the extremely challenging nature of the UK current fiscal position, nonetheless we welcome the Government’s recognition that cutting investment in infrastructure would not only harm growth but would cost jobs and negatively impact businesses and communities.

“We call on the Government to work with industry to redouble efforts to accelerate growth in the short and medium term, so that potential future cuts can be mitigated.

“We are now exploring the Government’s commitments in greater detail to ensure that the agenda on which it was elected in 2019 – that of levelling up the economy and investing in the infrastructure the UK will require in the coming years – remains in place, even in the context of the difficult choices the Chancellor has had to make today.

“The UK Government has said that it has confidence in the infrastructure sector to deliver growth.

“CECA members stand ready to deliver on this ambition, and we look forward to working with our members and government at all levels to secure the economy, deliver the recovery, and return UK plc to economic growth as quickly as possible.”

PUSHING THE DESIGN ENVELOPE

Rising to meet the industry’s growing demand for lower carbon emissions, capacity and prolonged offshore operations, BMT has unveiled a new fully hybrid propulsion 32m Crew Transfer Vessel design adding to its already extensive range.

Keeping construction costs down for customers is one of the key priorities for BMT, so every aspect of the design such as vessel structure, layout and key equipment choices is optimised to be easier to build and more affordable

With several hybrid vessels in service including ‘MPA Guardian’, BMT offers the latest system architecture, tailored to the vessel’s specific operational profile. This latest hull design draws upon many years of experience, offering superior seakeeping for the toughest conditions using a Z-Bow hull – proven on many of the BMT in-service vessels.

Crews and engineers’ safety and comfort are fundamental to this design approach. Spaces around the vessel have been carefully arranged to improve workflow. The wheelhouse has been designed to offer outstanding visibility to facilitate crew transfers. The superstructure is resiliently mounted and significantly reduces noise and vibration.

BMT’s patented and latest generation Active Fender System, an essential feature that enhances transfer capability in a wider range of sea states as well as the safety

Record CSD to dredge unprecedented depths

A giant dredger set to operate in a port expansion project on the island of Kalimantan will be the largest stationary dredger owned by an Indonesian operator. The swift delivery of a CSD650 (Cutter Suction Dredger) has been made possible due to Damen’s stock program.

Damen Shipyards signed a contract to deliver the CSD650 to the Indonesian dredging operator Pelayaran Fortuna Nusantara Megajaya (PFNM), earlier this month. The company also operates the Barito Equator, a 2,500 m3 Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger built in Indonesia 10 years ago using a Damen design package and the largest hopper dredger ever built in Indonesia. Now the same operator can add a new record; this CSD650 will be the largest Cutter Suction Dredger in Indonesia and will be able to reach unprecedented dredging depths. The stationary dredger is an expansion of the operator’s current fleet.

Damen’s standard CSD650 will be fitted with a 700 kW cutter head which can work in water depths up to -25m. The suction ladder incorporates a submerged dredge pump, which works in series with the in board dredge pump. 3,938 kW of installed power ensures an impressive discharge distance and dredge production of 7,000 m3/h on average. The overall length of the

dredger is 70m, resulting in an impressive swing width of 71m, and it has a weight of 660 tons.

Currently, the new CSD650 is being final ised and equipped to specification in the Netherlands. The dredger will be transport ed from the Damen Dredging Equipment shipyard early next year. Gysbert Boersma, Damen Shipyard Sales Manager, states, “It is a real pleasure to be able to deliver the dredger at such a short notice. Our fruitful discussions with the Indonesian owner have resulted in the delivery of a complete dredging package including spares and training. This will all ensure a fast deploy ment of the new dredger on site”.

of the technician transfer in challenging sea conditions, reduces the potential for impact damage to the vessel or turbine structure.

The 32m (105ft) length allows for a larger cargo deck area and increased load capacity, enabling the vessel to play an increased role during the windfarm construction phases with the ability to carry more equipment in support of the larger ships.

“BMT collaborates with many industryleading shipyards around the world, meticulously working through each area of the design. Our team is a pioneer in the CTV market with over 60 vessels currently in-service in Asia, Europe and the USA. With this design we are pushing the envelope, offering a significant steppingstone towards achieving net zero,” says Jonathan Cotgreave, BMT’s Lead Naval Architect.

As pioneers in new generation hybrid ship design, independent designer BMT provides vessel design services to shipyards, vessel owners and operators around the world..

“Using experience and expertise, we provide excellence in design and naval architecture at any stage of a project, from early concept and feasibility studies, contract, and class-level design to detailed production engineering, commissioning and refit. We support our customers through their whole vessel life cycle, from concept design and procurement to maintenance and improvements of their existing fleet and vessel life extension and replacement programmes,” concludes Jonathan.

FLEET OPTIMISATION - REDUCING THE ADMIN BURDEN

Europe’s leading provider of specialist crew transfer vessels to the offshore wind power industry has installed Reygar’s Digital Daily Reporting System, Digital DPR, across its entire fleet of over 50 workboats.

The Digital DPR (DDPR) app runs from a touchscreen tablet onboard and is simple and easy to use for busy workboat skippers. It dramatically reduces the administrative burden of daily progress reporting as well as improving report accuracy and timeliness.

Aaron Trebilcock, Master at Windcat Workboats, said, “DDPR saves a lot of time on what is otherwise a long and detailed task. The daily progress report is automatically generated and sent out at the end of the shift in a format that is simple to digest.”

Reygar’s time-saving reporting technology has been comprehensively trialled on several of Windcat Workboats’ CTVs over the past 18 months. Feedback from skippers and management was positive and fleet-wide rollout was completed in mid-October.

Phillip Goffin, IT Manager for Windcat Workboats, said:,“We are committed to meeting the reporting needs of our customers with a digitalised vessel fleet. We also want to look after our crews

Investing to grow

A new pilot vessel’s higher transit speeds, even in challenging conditions, will enable an increase in overall efficiency of pilot services for Portland Port, UK.

Goodchild Marine Services Limited are to construct an ORC 121 for Portland Port; part of broader investment the port is making to enable larger cruise ships and Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships to berth alongside. The vessel will be the third pilot boat of its class built and supplied to the Southwest by Great Yarmouth-based Goodchild Marine in recent years.

The vessel’s beak bow hull design promotes minimal drag, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 26 knots. Despite the speed, fuel savings and carbon reductions are achieved via the latest generation of engines.

Steve Pierce, General Manager for Goodchild Marine said, “We continue to focus our designs on the needs of UK ports as their requirements change, considering that ships visiting UK ports are getting ever bigger, along with changes to environmental legislation.”

Capt Mike Shipley, General Manager

and back-office teams by reducing the reporting burden and streamlining where possible. The team at Reygar understood exactly what was needed and worked closely with us to customise their DDPR system around our specific requirements.

“Now, we have a single app from which our skippers can generate customised DPR reports according to the requirements of the customer, as well as internal management reports for our back office. Our crews and back-office people are happy, and it is saving us valuable time. We look forward to working with our customers to provide them this centralised, customisable reporting solution going forward.”

DDPR either works alongside Reygar’s award-winning BareFLEET vessel monitoring system, where installed, or runs as a standalone solution. The app can be customised to gather a wide variety of DPR data, including crew details, fuel and consumables use, various task types, transits, passenger transfers to turbines and working hours data. Data input live from the vessel can be seen instantly in the cloud by shore staff, with users also able to access cloud based KPI data.

Chris Huxley-Reynard, CEO of Reygar, said, “By providing our customers with a standalone version of this reporting solution we can make the benefits of

(Marine) for the Portland Port Group said, “This new pilot boat is part of a wider investment in the port to enable us to react to the changes in the size and types of ships visiting our port. Having researched the ORC Range of pilot boats, including

visiting the ports that operate them, it gave us the confidence that our pilotage services will be enhanced which is good for the port and the visiting ships.”

The vessel will enter service at Portland Port in 2025.

Welcome back

Against a backdrop of rapid growth in the global offshore wind industry, G+ has announced new appointments to the G+ secretariat to steer the organisation through planned expansion, deepening its international activities and membership base.

With an initial emphasis on the booming North American market, Beate Hildenbrand will lead the strategic development of G+ in the Americas.

Mariana Carvalho is the new Offshore Wind Technical Manager, running the G+ work programme, including the launch of the lifesaving rules for the global offshore wind industry.

Caren Hsiao, based in Taipei, Taiwan, has been appointed as the APAC representative for

the G+. A fluent Mandarin and English speaker, Caren is tasked with growing the G+ offering in the region, with particular focus in Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and Australia.

David Gana has been appointed to oversee the health and safety incident data programme for G+’s annual report, as well as look after the safety incident lessons G+ makes available through Toolbox, the Energy Institute’s free-to-use incident lessons platform.

G+ works internationally to tackle health and safety issues in the global offshore wind industry through four main work programmes: incident data reporting, good practice guidelines, safe by design and learning from incidents.

James has worked in the marine sector for nearly 15 years, including extensive work as a Corporate and Commercial Skipper, Marine Supervisor for Game of Thrones Season 5, Corporate Marine Events Manager and Lead Camera Boat and VIP Skipper for the Olympic Sailing Events in 2012 and Americas Cup World Series in 2011 and 2017.

“Never change a winning team” the old saying goes. SLX Group add, if you do change it, be ready to put it back together if the opportunity presents itself.

Hot on the heels of the news that the management team at Simplex Engineering had successfully completed an MBO, the new group is very happy to be welcoming back Jon Sargeant as Business Development Manager at SLX Group.

After three years working with two other companies in the maritime and offshore sectors, Jon was seeking a new challenge at a time when the change of ownership happened. Having always kept close contacts with him, the team at SLX Group felt it was natural to ask Jon to rejoin them and help grow the business in line with their new focus.

Jon said, “It's great to be back".

NEW PAYLOAD DELIVERY DEVICE FOR CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENTS

An autonomous ‘air-ground payload transfer device’ with truly disruptive capabilities for drone delivery applications is set to replace winches.

The device, called SPARROW and developed by BMT, is a new type of lightweight suspended robot that descends on a line with the payload leaving the drone at height. While the drone remains in the approximate overhead, SPARROW has autonomous control of its descent while making horizontal adjustments for a safe, quiet delivery. This allows the drone to remain much higher above the destination, unheard and unobtrusive at ground level, compared to when using a traditional winch.

Simon Gould, BMT Managing Director for Defence and Security UK, commented, “At BMT, we have an outstanding heritage and commitment to research and innovation that help to shape the ideas of tomorrow. This fully autonomous robotic concept is a great example of how we actively apply innovation to solve our customers’ complex problems. We are looking forward to seeing how this novel solution can help operators in a diverse range of applications and settings.”

Replacing a traditional drone-mounted winch, BMT’s novel robotic device (patent pending) lowers both itself and the payload at the bottom end of a low-profile, weightbearing line (exactly where precise control is needed), with just the top end of the line attached to a 3rd party drone above.

To provide autonomy, SPARROW has an internally powered cable drum, four small side-facing rotors, and all the necessary sensors, power, and processing. The drum rotation is controlled by an in-hub motor and brake, allowing a rapid and silent descent and ascent. The rotors do

not generate lift and only operate when required to push sideways to counter the wind or move the payload horizontally.

The SPARROW concept enables the large, noisy, vulnerable drone to remain high above the complex ground environment at the destination. Just how high depends on the use case and wind strength; but safe controlled delivery is possible using this approach from 200ft in windy conditions, and 500-1000ft in light winds. In comparison to using a traditional winch from a low hover, a SPARROW delivery offers a much smaller, quieter physical presence at the point of delivery. It also allows a safer, more precise delivery to a wider variety of locations, including confined spaces close to vertical surfaces and urban infrastructure.

This approach may also offer value to manned helicopter operations and across other domains such as Maritime ShipShore deliveries, support to maintenance engineers on tall structures, Emergency Services, and commercial drone delivery to domestic addresses. The project is looking to partner and licence the technology to a range of leading established suppliers.

If trials continue to prove successful, BMT is offering an alternative vision of the future in which the environment is not filled by the buzzing of drones hovering in close proximity to people, but one where drones remain safely at height, out of sight, out of earshot and out of mind.
