VARD WINS CSOV CONTRACTS
Vard has been awarded contracts to build two Construction Service Operations Vessels (CSOVs) with a value of €100m for the off shore wind industry
The CSOVs for Norwegian shipping company Rem Off shore are tailor-made for worldwide services and maintenance operations at off shore wind farms. The deal includes an option for two additional vessels.

These contracts confirm VARD’s leadership in the CSOV market, both in terms of innovative ship design, breakthrough technologies and shipbuilding quality.”

Photo: Vard Ålesund, Norway, is a highly versatile platform for all offshore windfarm support operations, focusing on onboard logistics, security, comfort, and superior operability.
The first vessel will be delivered from VARD in Norway in first half of 2023. The hull will be built at Vard Braila in Romania. The second vessel will be built and delivered by Vard Vung Tau in Vietnam, scheduled for delivery in 2024.
Vard’s subsidiaries will be involved with major deliveries onboard, and in the shipbuilding process of the vessels.
Each with a length of 85m and a beam of 19.5m, the vessels will have a height-adjustable motion-compensated gangway with elevator system, a height-adjustable boat landing system, and a 3D-compensated crane. The CSOVs will have accommodation for 120 people onboard.

Metocean studies paving way for Welsh fl oating wind
A metocean study supporting the design of the fi rst fl oating off shore wind (FLOW) projects in Welsh waters is underway.
Blue Gem Wind (BGW), a joint venture between Simply Blue Energy and TotalEnergies, is the developer behind two Celtic Sea floating offshore wind projects, Erebus and Valorous.
BGW has appointed ABPmer to deliver the certifiable metocean design bases to inform front end engineering design (FEED) and Detailed Design for both projects. This includes the production of fully calibrated spectral wave and hydrodynamic hindcasts.
Heidi Roberts, Head of Modelling and Physical Processes at ABPmer, said “Alongside our physical process work to support the consenting of Erebus, we are thrilled to continue working with BGW on these exciting projects.“
“We will refine our existing models using ABPmer’s SEASTATES hindcast database, enabling us to fully represent the regional oceanographic conditions and nearshore processes, providing a bespoke 40-year hindcast of both hydrodynamics and waves. Detailed metocean analysis will then be completed on the calibrated hindcast and metocean design bases produced.”
The study will provide extreme and operational metocean criteria for the array and export cable corridors for both projects, with delivery in late summer 2021.
500th generator milestone
Manor Renewable Energy (MRE) has positioned its 500th JCB generator off shore during work on the Hornsea Two Off shore Wind Farm.
Delivered in April by Watling JCB, the 116kVA generator has been positioned offshore on a turbine on the Hornsea Two offshore wind farm where it will contribute to the temporary power requirement needed for the successful turbine commissioning.
Over the last five years, MRE has worked closely with Watling JCB to provide a reliable and durable temporary power solution for the offshore renewables sector. Utilising their extensive engineering facilities in Portland, Dorset, MRE has created a bespoke, industryleading modular temporary power offering which has been successfully delivered to over 20 projects across the UK, Europe and Asia.
Franco-Scottish fl oating wind and hydrogen partnership
The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) and partners have delivered a report outlining a series of recommendations for the Scottish Government.
The report aims to facilitate research collaborations between Scottish and French organisations working in floating wind and hydrogen. Published by The Scottish Government, the report produced by EMEC in partnership with French engineering firm INNOSEA and London-based The Renewables Consulting Group (RCG), part of ERM, explores the technical innovation status of both floating wind and hydrogen supply.
Deep water wind power developer Hexicon has purchased the Wave Hub test site from Cornwall Council, UK.
The deal will see Hexicon through its UK subsidiary, TwinHub Limited, acquire the assets of Wave Hub Limited from the local authority, Cornwall Council, for an undisclosed sum, a move that has been welcomed by local renewable energy innovation body Marine-i.
The Wave Hub test site lies 16km off the north Cornwall coast. Hexicon intends to develop the site for a 30-40MW floating offshore wind project and deploy their innovative twin-turbine floating foundation.
The project, called TwinHub, will be seen as a coup for Cornwall, which has a significant offshore renewable energy supply chain and has worked hard to position the maritime region as a base for floating offshore wind projects in the Celtic Sea.
Commenting on the news, Prof Lars Johnanning, Programme Director for Marine-i, said:
“This is excellent news and a real step forward for Cornwall in its ambition to become one of the world’s leading regions for floating offshore wind technology.
“Hexicon is highly experienced in the field of renewable energy and has already installed some innovative energy projects around the world. Having a major player like Hexicon investing into Cornwall is bound to stimulate interest in the region from other leading international players.”

Use of the site by Twin Hub for floating offshore wind technologies is ultimately subject to the agreement of The Crown Estate, with whom lease discussions are currently ongoing.
Development merger
Team Humber Marine Alliance and Grimsby Renewables Partnership have announced their intention to merge to create one of the UK’s leading renewables and maritime business development organisations.
With a combined membership of almost 300 Humber businesses involved in offshore wind, marine engineering and related sectors, the move will create a powerful and unified force in representing the Humber region’s interests and in generating business opportunities for members.
GRP was formed more than a decade ago by a group of local businesspeople to galvanise stakeholders in the port of Grimsby.
