CONNECTIVITY PLAYBOOK FOR OEMS
It is safe to assume that the marine industry has fi nally entered the connectivity era, says Marko Pihlar, CEO of Sentinel Marine Solutions.
Off -board user experience started to take shape with remote access to a boat’s systems and has evolved from simple alert push-notifi cations to fully integrated maintenance recommendations.
“This transition was signifi cantly driven by Sentinel’s platform approach,” he explained.
“Besides off ering a range of IoT products to fi ll the connectivity gap, working end-to-end with major OEMs gives us the ability to set standards for the deployment of connectivity features.”
However, Marko believes that in 2022, despite the potential, many OEMs have only scratched the surface.
“They are battling postcovid supply chain issues, so challenges like customer interactions with smartphones are hardly their top priority now,” he says.
“We expect this to change, though as

8 OEMs have only scratched
the surface of onboard connectivity
connectivity features are in rising demand.”
The percentage of buyers in automotive that are willing to switch brands in order to have modern connectivity features is much higher than in marine, points out Marko but this is expected to change.
“This means it is time for OEMs to start building cross-functional teams, which can jointly develop and deploy use cases over the whole life cycle of a boat,” he says. “Their eff orts should primarily address execution issues, for example customer onboarding, ultimately leading to enhanced customer experience.”
AIS can be put to many more uses than most people realise, according to Phil Harris of Meridian Chartware, part of Norcom Technology Group.
The developer of marine navigation systems for personal computers uses software to turn AIS into a monitoring programme that among other features, can monitor boat traffi c in a particular area, to see how close a vessel is, and also which vessels are coming and going.
“We use live AIS, however the update rate of the AIS is quicker; if you’re trying to monitor a ship turning, everything is a lot quicker,” explained Phil.
“We’re using AIS to do more, to enhance what people can do with AIS. It’s a cheaper option for a small port or harbour or anyone wanting to do monitoring.
“If someone has a harbour or a Coastwatch, they are not reliant on taking data from the web. They can get a better picture of what’s going on.”
And Phil explained that harbour and marina authorities can use the software to monitor which vessels have stayed in order to ensure the correct dues are paid. It can also monitor the speed of vessels in case of an accident or excess wash.
“It’s a cheap alternative to a complete radar system,” added Phil. “It can be used to gather data and evidence.”
Meridian Chartware will design, develop and modify the software depending on customers’ requirements using Admiralty charts as a base.
As well as providing a standard programme, Meridian Chartware will also design, develop and modify the software depending on customers’ requirements using Admiralty charts as a base.

New QuickFit Antennas
The new Scout Marine QuickFit antennas are a new line of ready-to-install marine antennas available from IMP.
The installation of RF connectors is not required, the antennas are easy to remove and, thanks to Scout’s original foam injection technology are waterproof.
The antennas are built with FME type termination and come with coax cables with pre-installed connectors making it easier to run a cable inside a boat and reach the VHF radio.
The antennas are suitable for any type of boat due to a large variety of mounting accessories. They can be removed from a deck mount by unscrewing the lock nut – no specifi c equipment or tools are required for installation and are compatible with most standard marine mounts and brackets.
The antennas are supplied with 5m coax cable with pre-assembled FME female connectors.
There are six diff erent antenna models. The antennas are made in Italy.

Cancel culture is defi ned as: ‘the practice of withdrawing support for a person or company based on their views or actions’.
Whilst no brand is safe from cancel culture, there are steps you can take to prevent it and minimise the damage if it does.
Have a purpose
5 Having a clear purpose will provide a baseline to know which issues to take a stance on, the impact you want to have and the courage to defend your brand and its values when required.
Be mindful of ambassadors
5 If you affi liate with a specifi c person, make sure they align to your company’s purpose and be prepared to either stand beside them (a la Nike) or take action against them.
Don’t neglect crisis plans
5 Review your company’s crisis plans regularly and include actions on how to respond in the face of being cancelled.
No comment is not an option
5 Remaining neutral is not an option as it can make your company look as if it doesn’t care and can appear as an admission of guilt.
Actions speak lounder than words
5 If you do fi nd yourself under scrutiny, prioritise actions over words.
Consumers will want to know your stance but will care more about how you will address the situation.
Listen to your customers
5 If you do attract negative publicity, take the time to listen to what’s being said, act with integrity and don’t be afraid to admit to making mistakes. GPS data, a breach of the geofence will result in the alarm sounding.
The app also has new social capabilities including the ability for users to share tracks with friends and followers in other applications, sending and receiving referral invitations to the app and push notifi cations for key events like weather-related alerts.
The B&G App is free to download and off ers free up-to-date and detailed nautical charts from C-MAP, personal waypoints, routes and tracks, the latest marine weather, personalisation and much more.
Charts are powered by data from offi cial hydrographic offi ces with data continuously updated and augmented from thousands of data sources.
MAJOR UPDATE TO NAVICO APP
Navico has announced a major update to its B&G, Lowrance and C-MAP app.
The app is designed to enable the crew on a vessel to remotely mirror the B&G or Lowrance MFDs and control it from a remote location on a mobile or tablet device.
Another update is the weather overlay on the charts which includes key data such as wind, gust, precipitation, air temperature and pressure.
“We designed these updates to really help sailors in planning, sailing and to improve safety at sea” said Simon Conder, global head of brand, B&G. “Adding more key and real-time data for users to take advantage is vital for us in developing this app, as is providing more innovative and new features; and the new anchor alert feature is another great example of that.”
When anchoring, premium users can set their location and receive push notifi cations if their yacht is drifting. Using
