INSIDE California contemplates "End of Life Option" Act

SB 128 or commonly known as the "End of Life Option" Act was recently advanced by the California State Senate as it heads to the California Assembly. The crux of the act would allow "an adult who meets certain qualifications, and who has been determined by his or her attending physician to be suffering from a terminal disease, as defined, to make a request for a drug prescribed pursuant to these provisions for the purpose of ending his or her life."

By Michelle Mears-Gerst Throughout history of the United States, the American flag has been a symbol of freedom and a reminder of home for the military when deployed in time of peace and war. Lately Old Glory has been in the news because some of its own citizens are burning, stomping and disrespecting her as a form of protest for various social issues throughout the country. The discretion of the American Flag by those who feel vilified in one way or another has been upsetting to many especially veterans. The flag represents all the citizens of the United States past present and future but it also holds a special meaning to those who went into battle. To veterans the red stripes in the flag symbolize the lifeblood of the men and women who died for their country and when you disrespect the flag your disrespect the fallen service member. When Marine, now local real estate agent, David Serpa was serving in Af-

ghanistan he brought with him a flag that was raised in his patrol base in Afghanistan. His base had very little if any comforts of home, not even running water. The deployment, Serpa said was “rough” and when he returned home it frustrated him to see some American flags around his hometown tattered, worn and in utter disrepair. He lost friends, Marines he served with while deployed and he knew they fought for the stars and stripes. Serpa said he used to watch the news a lot when he came home from the war and the politics around the nation frustrated him leaving him overwhelmed feeling as if he was unable to make a difference in the nation’s angst. “I came to realize that I can make a difference in the world by focusing on improving my little corner of it,” said Serpa. “I cannot change the entire world but I can change my corner of it.” Serpa has taken it upon himself to help educate his community in and around French Valley and Murrieta on the meaning of the American flag, to help local residents replace their worn flags with new and at the same time properly retire the tattered flags. Serpa teamed up with VFW Post 4089 who holds official ceremonies throughout the year to retire American flags according to protocol. According to the US Scouting Services, “An old flag should be "retired" with all the dignity and respect befitting the nation's flag. The traditional method of retirement is to incinerate the flag, but this does not mean that one should simply drop the entire flag (intact) into a fire.” Serpa goes around town and offers to

swap out old flags on his own dime.“I will also help install the new flags,” said Serpa. “I found that most people didn’t even realize their flags were getting worn and in disrepair.” In his efforts to better his corner of the world, Serpa found out that many people had old flags in their garages because they did not know how to dispose the flag. Local resident Louise Martin Kail posted on social media the flag Serpa installed with permission for their family while away, “We just got home and I have a beautiful new flag hanging proudly outside on my house thank you so much David.” A local Girl Scout Troop in Temecula was recently the recipient of a new American flag from Serpa. “It was so rewarding and touching. The Girls Scouts gave me a badge and sent me a video,” said Serpa. In regards to the negative news on flag stomping and burning Serpa feels proud his community has risen above. “I think our community is a better community than those burning the flags,” said Serpa. “Here we are swapping out the tattered and retiring them with reverence.” If you would like to donate to VFW, 4089 visit the link, http:// www.gofundme.com/VFWpost4089. You can also contact Serpa if you would like help replacing your worn flag or to donate to his cause so he can purchase more flags for other local residents at http://www.davidserpahomes. com/.

Riverside Police Discover Drug Lab in Menifee

Two individuals were arrested by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in what appears to have been an unexpected twist to what the original scene was supposed to entail. Police were dispatched to the home of 24 year old Robert G. Castro and 31 year old Brynn Ashley Landay around 6:00pm last Tuesday; the arrival of police was initially supposed to entail assisting Child Protective Services in an operation at the home. However, what police found was much more alarming.

Continuation on page 1 Meet Murrieta Resident & Publishing Executive Greg Bowman By Robbie Motter After several years of working in higher education, he decided that he wanted to teach part-time as a college instructor. So he went back to school and received a Master’s Degree in Management from Chapman University. This enabled him to teach at colleges and universities as an adjunct instructor. He has really enjoyed teaching because it enables him to bring many real-world scenarios and stories to his students. Greg was born in Los Angeles and grew-up in Torrance, played on the high school golf team at Torrance High School. He went to El Camino College and played on the golf team and received an AA degree. He then went to CSU Dominguez Hills where he played on the golf team and received a B.S. Degree in Business Administration. I had the opportunity to personally meet this dynamic man at the Menifee Lakes Country Club on a Monday night Karaoke and over the years have continued to see him do great performances.

Greg told me he started singing casually about 10 years ago. He never really sang much before that. He says he really enjoys singing because it is a very social activity that has enabled him to meet a lot of wonderful people. He does it purely for fun, and finds it to be a great stress reliever! Greg also volunteers to sing at different events in the Community. He sang Neil Diamond and Rod Stewart for the Menifee/ Sun City Fashion Show in 2014 and at the Historical Train Station in Perris, an all day family affair. Greg was very devoted to his father, who was a Veteran. He was at one of the facilities off Monroe in Murrieta and he visited him daily until he passed away. In his spare time he enjoys working out at the gym several times a week. He also tries to play golf once a week, and if he is not travelling, he tries to sing a couple nights a week in Menifee and Temecula. Left to right his wife Miranda, daughter Nicole, Greg and son Derek, front is their dog Greg has two great kids, Derek is 20 and attending MSJC, and Nicole is 17 and attending Murrieta Mesa High School where she plays on the Varsity Lacrosse Team. Greg has been married to Miranda for 27 years.

Local Murrieta Mayor to be Privately Investigated by City Council

By C.J. Leger Scandal has ruptured in Murrieta as the Murrieta City Council has reportedly hired a private investigator to probe into allegations against the City’s Mayor, Harry Ramos. The Council voted last week to take matters a bit further and contract a private investigator according to official reports. The decision to hire a private investigator comes after several serious accusations, one of which was presented in a City Council Meeting on June 16th. There have been other

events that have placed questions upon Ramos’ capabilities of handling the responsibilities of being mayor; one of the occurrences was as simple as having misplaced his gavel during a meeting. However, some of the accusations presented by former Councilman Dick McAllister were more severe. He went on-record to accuse Ramos of speaking to the Regional Boards about other councilmen and bad mouthing them. His accusations also include remarks about Ramos having harassed city staff members and demanding negative evidence that could be used against the current City Manager, Rick Dudley. Other accusations include Ramos as making derogatory and racist remarks about applicants he interviewed for commission appointments after they left. There were remarks about Ramos firing a city employee because he did not do as he was asked by the mayor, which opened the door to hostile workplace lawsuits, according to the City Attorney. On a final note, McAllister also accused the mayor of sexually harassing a woman whose primary form of business relies on the city. According to the former council member, he brought these accusations forward after experiencing an unprofessional email exchange with Ramos in May. The email exchange was regarding Ramos's vote against

Page 3

an apartment complex, and McAllister asking for the mayor's account of why. It became hostile, and McAllister claimed his written behavior should be censored. This is not the first time that the City of Murrieta has had a scandal involving a Mayor. Ramos was elevated to the role as Mayor of the city only after the previous Mayor, Alan Long, stepped down from his post after being involved in an accident where he was allegedly driving while intoxicated. At the time, the Council was offered two choices, either they could observe the rules of succession and promote Ramos to Mayor, or they could bypass the rules altogether. After having previously bypassed the rules of succession on a separate occasion and having the experience be criticized and frowned upon, the Council decided to honor the rules of succession and promote Ramos. Ramos has not generally gained favor among his peers in the three years that he has been Mayor. He has, on occa-

sion, been accused of being rough around the edges and awkward when presiding over meetings. Prior to Ramos's promotion to Mayor, there were several City Council members who expressed reservations about Ramos taking the position, claiming that he was too inexperienced but offered to give him a chance. The hired private investigator has been contracted to strictly investigate violations of the Code of Conduct. It has been stated that any discovery of criminal or campaign-finance law violations will be forwarded to police, prosecutors or the Fair Political Practices Commission. He will present his findings to the City Manager, who has been instructed to make recommendations on how to proceed with the situation.

Wine Country Spotlight

South Coast Winery Resort & Spa Judged BEST CALIFORNIA STATE WINERY OF THE YEAR for the past two years, this is THE PLACE to stop during your visit. The warm and friendly tasting room serves up award-winning wines, while the estate vineyards of this 39-acre resort house an award winning restaurant, luxurious spa and private villas, providing you with the ultimate wine country experience. What’s South Coast Winery’s secret? Its winemaking philosophy is simple: In order for outstanding grapes to become unforgettable wine, it necessitates an essential dedication of marrying the best of Mother Nature with the best of man. As South Coast Winery’s winegrower and proprietor, Jim Carter’s approach to growing the best grapes in Southern California honors this union, alongside his hiring award-winning winemaking team Jon McPherson & Javier Flores. Therein lies the success that has earned South Coast Winery the "best of the best" distinction when it earned California State Golden Bear Winery of the Year Award for the past two years running. "There is a place on earth where each of the grapes is grown to produce today's wine. Our place on earth – the valley of Wild Horse Peak -- is the best.” states Carter. His vineyards, located on the eastern side of Mount Palomar, are set in the native terrain of Southern California which offers invigoratingly beautiful scenery. The nearby Temecula Valley offers daytime heat and nighttime cold, an ideal agricultural setting for winegrowing but after tasting his first harvest, Carter realized his mountain vineyard had something extra—more

sunshine. It is this extra gift from Mother Nature that produces South Coast’s exceptional grapes. Not planted in the more common California sprawl, Carter’s vineyards are planted in 3'6" heights, allowing the extra sunshine to meet and make great each cluster of grapes. Rooted in this celebration of sun and soil, Carter built an exceptional winery within a picturesque vineyard setting in the heart of Temecula’s beautiful wine country. Offering fine wine from the South Coast Appellation of Southern California along with estate vineyard wines, South Coast’s wine will be made the way 'people want to drink it' – splendid, enticing and impressive. Master Winemaker Jon McPherson has been making Carter’s wine since the winery's inception in 2003 and he, alongside Winemaker Javier Flores, believes the combination of winegrower and winemaker will bring without doubt many award-winning wines. Devoted to the good life of wine country, South Coast Winery Resort & Spa offers enticing dining, luxurious villas, inviting tasting room, spa

The Top 7 Health Benefits of Cycling Cyclists are a diverse group. Some of us ride fat tires down rocky trails, some of us ride road bikes up burly hills, some of us ride for sport and some of us ride just for fun. Some ride for the adrenaline rush and some ride their bikes for basic transportation. But all of us can take advantage of the healthy benefits of cycling, even if we never ever buy a single item made from spandex. Bicycling, along with being the most efficient mode of human locomotion, is also one of the best all-around activities for improving our health. From head to toes, cycling’s health benefits are hard to beat. 7 Health Benefits of Cycling 1. Cycling is good for your heart: Cycling is associated with improved cardiovascular fitness, as well as a decrease in the risk of coronary heart disease. 2. Cycling is good for your muscles: Riding a bike is great for toning and building your muscles, especially in the lower half of the body – your calves, your thighs, and your rear end. It’s also a great low-impact mode of exercise for those with joint conditions or injuries to the legs or hips, which might keep them from being active. 3. Cycling is good for your waistline: You can burn a lot of calories while biking, especially when you cycle faster than a leisurely pace, and cycling has been associated with helping to keep weight gain down. And cycling has the added benefit of ramping up your metabolism, even after the ride is over. 4. Cycling is good for your lifespan: Bicycling is a great way to increase your longevity, as cycling regularly has been associated with increased ‘life-years’, even when adjusted for risks of injury through cycling. 5. Cycling is good for your coordination: Moving both feet around in circles while steering with both your hands and your body’s own weight is good practice for your coordination skills. 6. Cycling is good for your mental health: Riding a bike has been linked to improved mental health. 7. Cycling is good for your immune system: Cycling can strengthen your immune system, and could protect against certain kinds of cancers.

Hello, my name is Yanik Gozlan from The Computer Repair Experts and I write “Tech Talk”. My goal is to give tips and information on the latest gadgets or common issues you may have with your technology. I have been helping people solve their technology problems since 2002. How to spot and avoid installing potentially unwanted programs

How to avoid PUPs and other unwanted programs slowing down your PC PUPs: I'm afraid to say we're not talking about the cuddly, loveable little dogs, but rather the kind that will not so adorably clog up your laptop or PC and slow it right down. PUPs, short for potentially unwanted programs, and advertising software (more commonly known as adware) are removed on a day-to-day basis from suspect laptops and home PCs. Although these days we’re seeing more and more internet-savvy people install antivirus software to help protect their machines, PUPs

and adware can slyly avoid detection – so you won’t even realise your PC has been targeted. But never fear: we have a few simple steps to help arm your home system against rogue programs and stop it slowing down.

DON'T CLICK ANY OLD LINK PUP - 1 To give a real life example, I remember very clearly a conversation I had with my wife over the dinner table about this problem. She wanted to install a specific program but didn't go to an appropriate website to download – and wondered afterwards why a Yahoo toolbar appeared in his

web browser. After an intense Q&A session, I explained that by going to an unapproved vendor, the software could have been wrapped up with all these add-ons and in-built adware. In other words, although the original program will be there, it’ll come with added unwanted extras. To avoid this, only download software from legitimate, official websites and avoid clicking on any suspicious-looking links.

OK MAY NOT BE OK! PUP - 2 Clicking ‘OK’ is often a bit like reading Ts&Cs: although we know we should pay them proper attention, it’s often easier just to

accept them without much thought when we’re busy or in a rush. Some original programs can come with add-ons built into them already, but the difference is that you can choose whether to install them or not. With everything from toolbars to changing your search browser, you should take the time to read every page

carefully to make sure you’re not agreeing to anything you don't want or need. Those extra five minutes could help you avoid a few hours of inconvenient meddling! UNCHECK, UNCHECK & UNCHECK After slowing down and carefully reading what’s on the pages you’re clicking through, you

may come across some small boxes with ticks in already. If they’re asking permission to install add-ons or other adware, you’ll want to uncheck these. By unchecking them you are reducing the risk of slowing your computer down and improving your PC security for the future. So there you have it: a simple guide on how to avoid any unwanted intruders on your laptop or PC. If your computer is running a bit slow and you think it's due to PUPs or adware, then you could benefit from one of our Laptop & PC Health Check services. Just give us a call and let one of us work their magic.

California contemplates "End of Life Option" Act SB 128 or commonly known as the "End of Life Option" Act was recently advanced by the California State Senate as it heads to the California Assembly. The crux of the act would allow "an adult who meets certain qualifications, and who has been determined by his or her attending physician to be suffering from a terminal disease, as defined, to make a request for a drug prescribed pursuant to these provisions for the purpose of ending his or her life." The measure was inspired by Brittany Maynard, the 29-yearold San Francisco Bay Area resident who was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer last year. Maynard decided to move to Oregon. Maynard passed away on November 1, 2014, and her fam-

ily has since lobbied for the California legislation. The California bill has recently garnered high profile political support and news coverage. Moreover, the California Medical Association recently dropped its opposition to the bill. At this point, the Governor has not expressed any indication on

whether he would sign SB 128 if it reached his desk. There are only an handful of states that either through legislation or court rulings have a "right to die" law as reported by the Death with Dignity National Center such as Oregon, Washington, and New Mexico to name a few. Oregon has had a similar law since 1997 (In OR named the "Death with Dignity" Act). Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act (DWDA), enacted in late 1997, allows terminally-ill adult Oregonians to obtain and use prescriptions from their physicians for self-administered, lethal doses of medications. The Oregon Public Health Division is required by the DWDA to collect compliance information and to issue an annual report. According to the an-

Biz Buzz Cut your Losses In life, there are times we must admit our mistakes. In our personal life it may be saying we our sorry and buying flowers. In business, it can mean the difference of lost money or a company’s reputation. Sometimes, it is best for a business owner to cut their losses, admit they were wrong and find another way to keep their business moving forward. Face it, not all programs and systems work for every company. Ford’s assembly line doesn’t work in a Senior Home, and McDonald’s timing system doesn’t translate into an artist’s creative genius. For small businesses, experimenting to find the correct way of doing business along with hiring a good mix of support staff can be difficult and may require changing course.

And the first step is admitting you were wrong. Is a business relying solely on computers for tracking information? Is the company a services business with clients or does it have a product to sell? How important are employees to the welfare of the company and does it have a key person it cannot exist without? Getting into the basics of functionality will not only help with the identity of the company but it will show where money should be used to improve the business. Remember the old saying, “Work ON your business, not IN it.” Take a good look from the company as

a whole, do you have the right people in place? Do you have reliable systems with back up plans in case a computer is lost? Do you have enough money going into research and development? Most importantly, is your company turning a viable profit and are you a reputable company people are giving positive thoughts? It is OK to admit your mistakes, cut your losses and find something else that works for your situation. Victory can make us weak because we settle on our laurels and we must learn from our mistakes. Take that leap, admit your mistakes, buy those flowers and always strive to take your business Up One Level.

Work toward Your Own Financial Independence Day It’s almost the Fourth of July — time for fireworks, picnics and a reflection on all the liberties we possess in this country. But if you’re going to enjoy the freedom to do the things you want, especially during your retirement years, you’ll want to take the steps necessary to achieve your own “Financial Independence Day.” Here are a few suggestions for helping you reach that goal: Liberate yourself from debt. For most of us, a certain amount of debt is unavoidable. But the greater control you can gain over your debts, the better off you will be, because any dollars not spent in paying debts can be used to save and invest for your future. So look for ways to cut down on your spending and think about postponing some purchases until you can pay for them in cash. It may not be easy, but it’s possible. And by putting this “found money” to work immediately in quality investments, you may motivate yourself to keep a lid on your debt level. Unlock the power of time. Albert Einstein once said, “The most powerful force in the universe is compound interest.” Einstein, who knew a thing or two about the nature of time, clearly recognized its importance in investing. In fact, as an investor, time may be your greatest ally. The more years in which you invest, the more dollars you’ll put in, and the longer you’ll have for your investments to potentially grow. Even if you’re just starting out in your career and can only invest a small amount each month, you’ll be starting to accumulate the amount you’ll eventually need to enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. Release your investments’ growth potential. To attain financial freedom during your retirement years, you will need to invest for growth — it’s that simple. So include an appro-

priate amount of growth-oriented vehicles in your overall investment mix. Ultimately, this mix should be based on your risk tolerance, time horizon and specific long-term goals. Free your investments from “clustering.” In the investment world, as in many other arenas of life, you can have “too much of a good thing.” For example, if you own a particular investment, such as a stock, that has done well, you might think that it’s a good idea to own more of the same type of stock. But when investing, duplication can be dangerous, because if a market downturn affects one asset class particularly hard, and much of your portfolio is tied up in that asset class, you could take a big hit. Instead of “clustering” your dollars around a single asset or two, you could diversify your holdings by owning a mix of stocks, bonds, government securities and other vehicles. While diversification can potentially help you reduce the impact of volatility on

your holdings, a diversified portfolio can’t guarantee a profit or protect you from loss. Achieving any type of freedom, in any kind of endeavor, takes time and effort. That’s certainly the case with financial freedom— you will need to consistently make the right moves, over a period of

many years, before you can finally declare your fiscal independence. But once you reach that point, you will likely conclude that your diligence and dedication were well worth it. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Crime Riverside Police Discover Drug Lab in Menifee

by C.J. Leger Two individuals were arrested by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department in what appears to have been an unexpected twist to what the original scene was supposed to entail. Police discovered a makeshift drug lab in the home; also found were large quantities of processed marijuana and a honey oil laboratory. “Honey Oil” is the term drug manufacturers use to refer to the extreme concentration of a specific cannabis, which produces a drug with elevated levels of THC, widely known to be the active ingredient in marijuana. Various quantities of drug paraphernalia were also found on-site.

We reached out to the Riverside County Sheriff’s office for more information on the original reason Child Protective Services responded at the home, however, we have yet to receive a response from the department. What we do know is that a total of ten deputies participated in the raid where they found the ten pounds of processed marijuana. During the raid, one

of the two arrestees, Castro, fled from police but was ultimately captured around Calle Pompeii. Castro was processed and booked at Southwest Detention Center, the reason has been noted as suspicion of: possession of marijuana sale of marijuana transport of marijuana At arraignment he was given a $50,000 bail and he remains in jail.

Landay was processed and booked at Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility, where she remains, and also given a $50,000 bail. Child Protective Services did take Landay’s child, who was in the home at the time, into their custody awaiting further review and developments. There have been no reports as to the reason for Child Protective Services’ presence at the home before police discovered the drug lab. Paraphernalia found included weighing scales and drug packaging products, leading police and investigators to believe the couple may have been attempting to sell the drugs in smaller quantities.

Murrieta’s Independence Day Celebration Recap by C.J. Leger Photo’s by Michelle MearsGerst Across Riverside, early Independence Day celebrations took off last week while cities like Temecula, Menifee and our very own Murrieta prepared for large crowds gathering to watch the cities’ parades and spectacular fireworks at the end of the night. This year the event organizers in Murrieta did not disappoint, watching the fireworks from the other side of the park, photographers were privy to an amazing view of the city skyline and well organized fireworks that adorned it. The Murrieta Independence

Day Celebration was well received by the public and many showed up to participate in the entertainment and activities provided by the organizers. Fair food was abundant, among our favorites were the funnel cakes, which had everyone lining up for the special occasion favorite, topped with delicious powdered sugar; just the best in Riverside. But food was not the only thing in abundance on the 25th. Community spirit was at an all-time high, and everyone bloomed together in conversation, and even Murrieta’s finest were among attendees who kept watch and offered a

friendly smile now and again. The entire night went relatively without event, no arrests were made and no altercations between the crowds erupted. What we saw most of it this Independence Day Celebration, were lines of generations, grandmothers, mothers, grandchildren, all together to observe our Country's Independence Day Anniversary. Faces from all walks of life, countries, and nations came together to optimize the original idea behind the land of the free. The celebration rivaled that of many high-profile celebrations across the country. Many attendees showed up with their

American flags and the park with clad in banners. This year there was no stent of protest or burning of the American flag. Immigration reform seems to have taken a side seat for the celebration of America’s 239th birthday. The event organizers did a very good job of providing tons of activities and entertainment for kids. This year there was a large show out of kids accompanying their parents, most of which between the ages of seven and fifteen. Overall the event was a wholesome, family oriented one, and we were glad to be able to take part in the celebrations.
