ANAHI GARCIARODRIGUEZ

ACM ARTIST OF THE MONTH By: Jim T. Gammill

AnAhi Garcia-Rodriguez was born in Long Beach, California to Nancy Garcia and Julio Rodriguez. Julio is an educator that currently works at The Santa Rosa Academy; Nancy worked in educaon accounng for a while and has since moved on to being a stay at home mom. The couple has three other children, two girls and a boy. The family resided in Orange County, Palmdale, and Wildomar before they came to call Menifee home in 2008. However, it was in her early childhood years that AnAhi remembers some of her first experiences with music. “My great-grandma would always sing to me as a baby and I remember being so fascinated by it.” AnAhi recalls, “My family tells me that I was always humming songs even before I could speak a word.” Her family always took comfort in aending church services and it was here that AnAhi felt the magic of music and song once again. At the age of six she was determined to become a member of the church choir. She was accepted as the group’s youngest member and over a decade later, sll parcipates in her current church’s choir. “I love how being in church makes me feel and I love how singing makes me feel, so having these two great joys in one place has always meant so much to me!” AnAhi has had the opportunity to aend Menifee’s Santa Rosa Academy since she was in fourth grade. It was during her me at the academy that she had her first experience in an ensemble choir. It was a unique experience for AnAhi in the respect that there was more to it than just singing. Geng up in front of people and performing had always come easy to her, but the harmonizing and all the work that it took to sync her voice with a larger group was something else altogether. Like most young people, AnAhi had a period in which she wanted to spend more me with friends than she did on her music or school work. She never lost interest completely, but the emoon and feeling in

her performances had dwindled noceably. “She would stand in front of the microphone and sing,” the arst’s mother, Nancy Garcia remembers, “but we could tell that the passion just wasn’t in it.” A common theme in all great stories is the one moment when desny reveals itself in the guise of an unexpected mentor or an unforeseen and unavoidable occurrence. For AnAhi this event manifested itself in something as ordinary as going to get a physical to aend summer camp during her ‘not-so musical’ phase. AnAhi’s parents took her to see Dr. Kathleen Hurwitz, a local physician. When AnAhi sat on the exam table, Dr. Hurwitz asked her what she wanted to do when she grew up and AnAhi responded instantly.

“I want to be a singer,” AnAhi said, “I don’t know why I said it or how It came so quickly, but as soon as I said the words I knew that they were true.” Dr. Hurwitz asked AnAhi to sing for her and she did just that. The woman was so impressed that she asked her young paent to got to the front office and sing for her staff. AnAhi fulfilled this request just as happily and it felt exhilarang. Inspired by AnAhi’s talent, Dr. Hurwitz referred her to Norm Boaz, a local vocal coach that Dr. Hurwitz used for her own lessons. Aer starng classes, the Garcia-Rodriguez family was amazed to hear that AnAhi’s one-me physician had provided her with a scholarship and was taken aback when they realized that it was going to last for two full years. At the end of Dr. Hurwitz’ gracious scholar-

ship, Boaz decided to provide the last year of instrucon free of charge. When asked about payment, Boaz simply responded with, “I can’t wait to see her on a big stage someday.” The mentorship of Norm Boaz offered more than vocal training, it also helped AnAhi understand how important things like introducons and physical mannerisms were to her stage presence. The man covered everything from facial expression to hand movements. As a result, the young arst became even more confident on stage and did not miss a beat in her blossoming singing career. AnAhi has competed in several local compeons including talent compeons for The Temecula Boys and Girls Club, and the 2018 Menifee Boys and Girls Club’s “The One” compeon, in which she won first place. AnAhi’s passion to perform is not limited by geographical locaon, the young singer has made it through several rounds of audions for major compeons like television’s, American Idol and The Voice. AnAhi’s grandfather, Jamie Garcia, always roots her on and is so excited to see all of AnAhi’s accomplishments and where her musical journey may take her; the man had musical aspiraons of his own, but had to commit his me to raising and providing for his family. Arts Council Menifee noced the young star as a two-me contestant in Menifee’s Got Talent, where she didn’t fail to impress. The organizaon recently invited AnAhi to sing at one of its Friday night ‘Music by the Pond’ events at The Menifee Town Center where the arst performed effortlessly for two hours. Arts Council Trustee and organizer of Menifee’s Got Talent, Colleen Ackerman had the following to say of AnAhi: “With her outstanding talent, tenacity, and devoon to her cra, there is no doubt that AnAhi will be a successful performer. In addion, she is as beauful inside as out, always displaying humility, kindness, and gratude towards everyone.” As one of Menifee’s most shining young stars, the future is certainly bright and limitless for AnAhi Garcia-Rodriguez. It is for this reason that Arts Council Menifee is proud to name her as September’s Arst of the Month. Stay tuned and keep your fingers crossed, at the me of this arcle’s creaon AnAhi was preparing to audion for American Idol. El Raspado de Fauna Cocktail

By Chef Rosie O'connor

We have Snow Cones in the states but in the barrio, we call them Raspados. They are a wonderful summer me treat. When we lived in Cudahy the Raspado guy used to come around in a cart, ringing his bell and yelling out “Raspados, Raspados.” All the kids in the neighborhood would beg and plead in desperaon with their parents for a dollar to buy what would sasfy their sugar craving. This guy was smart too! He would always show up at 3:00 pm on the dot.

ice into a paper cone. We would choose a flavor in a bole which contained the delicious, addicve high fructose syrup: grape, strawberry, melon, and lime. “Who’s next?” he would ask and we would fight to get the next snow cone. We visited the beauful restaurant Fauna in Valle de Guadalupe Ensenada. Chef David Castro is not only making magic with his food, he is paying the same aenon to his cocktails. This Raspado displays his playfulness and touches on a nostalgic childHow did he know? hood memory. It was the most The Raspado guy had a big block delicious, thirst quenching cockof ice in his cart and would tail that cooled us down on that scrape the bits and parcles of painfully, humid summer day. Not only did it calm my hot flashes it reminded me of the good old days chasing the Raspado man.

Local EVER THOUGHT OF PLANNING A PAINT & SIP PARTY?

Look No further! Meet Deborah Irish From Art Uncorked by Robbie Moer

Deborah Irish, is the owner and founder of Art Uncorked mobile painng pares. Her mission is to inspire, encourage and nurture your creave side, spreading the joy of creang art to everyone she meets. She was unemployed looking for a job when a friend of hers sent her an arcle about the Paint & Sip movement that was happening on the East Coast. She did her research and realized that the trend hadn’t made it to California, yet. It hit her! This is it! She recognized that this is her opportunity. She dived in and started purchasing art supplies. She started her business in 2014. She knew it was going to be fun, so much than just a fun me. Creavity is important to us as human beings. It is a gi and if we deny ourselves this gi, we deny ourselves the pleasure that creating art it brings. Pablo Picasso said: “Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life”. When we create art, we can have the same feelings of falling in love. Art can enrich everyone’s life. Don’t worry about the outcome, embrace the process. The process, the acon of creang art is where all those good feelings come from. The results she sees at the end of her Art Uncorked painng pares are prey impressive. Creang art is good for the soul and beneficial for our health. It can reduce stress, anxiety, depression, as well as manage pain and lower blood pressure.

Menifee Buzz—www.menifeebuzz.com Making art can improve memory and cognive funcon, reducing common symptoms of demena. Why is art so popular today? Because we are starving for that human connecon through our God given drive to be creave. We are not only suffering from isolaon through technology, we are bombarded with the prefabricated, mass-produced, over processed everything. All the cra breweries, gastro-pubs and painng party events are popping up everywhere. These are a rebellion against the cold, boring pre-packaged whatever’s. It is an aspect of human connecon through expression, for both the arst and the viewer. Art is everywhere. The direct effect that art has on an individual when a client tells her they haven’t painted in years, that she inspires them to get a set of brushes and art supplies so they can paint at home in their own free me. She will provide all the necessary art supplies, including tabletop easels, aprons, brushes, paint, pallets, etc., for each guest in your party to complete an acrylic painng on a 12”x16” canvas (kids canvas, 9”x12”). Art Uncorked can accommodate up to 105 painters. On November 5th, 2017, Second Bapst Church of Riverside hosted a fundraiser at their church to raise money for the local homeless shelters and their

She feels it’s her responsibility as an arst to paint what she sees when she looks at a total solar eclipse so that others can see what an eclipse looks and feels like. The next total solar eclipse will take place on July 2, 2019 in South America. Until then, plan to schedule your private Art Uncorked Painting Party Event today! When a parent is so happy with how well the party went and amazed how good all the kids did at her daughter’s Painng Birthday Party. This is what Deborah Irish strive for; to inspire, encourage and nurture your creave side, no matter what your art or cra is. When you have a painng party with Art Uncorked, you will experience creang your very own masterpiece as she gently guides you through a Step-byStep, 3 hour painng lesson. SCHOOL IS BACK!

School is back in session! What an excing me for all of us. Whether it be in middle school, high school, college, or even finishing our last few credits to get what

about yourself as well. It is usually built of different emoons. Students oen feel anxious, excited, nervous, and movated. All these emoons are understandable and normal, but the most important thing is to stay focused. Even when school gets exhausng or homework is too hard,

we have worked so hard for, we are all moving up a degree. Although summer is over, we’re back to seeing our friends everyday, rocking the latest fashion, and most importantly expanding our knowledge. I personally love school for that exact reason. I love learning new things, discovering new people, and places I never knew existed. School also unravels new things

just keep pushing through. Everyday you walk down those halls, think posive thoughts. Always strive to be your best. School isn’t meant to hurt you, it’s meant to build you. Nelson Mandela once said: “Educaon is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Here are a few photos from local students that will get you excited to be back in school:

EVERY BUSINESS OWNER NEEDS A GOOD BUSINESS LAWYER

by Jeremiah Raxter, Esq

Business Law involves businesses. In general, Business Law deals with the formaon of new businesses, the daily operaons, its employees, and the issues that arise as exisng businesses interact with the public, other companies, and the government. This area of the law draws on a variety of legal disciplines, including Tax Law, Intellectual Property, Real Estate, Sales, Employment Law, Bankruptcy, Estate Planning, and others. Most Business Law Aorneys are proficient in transaconal work and trial advocacy. In a perfect world, your business lawyer is oen hired for the preempve purpose of avoiding future ligaon. To fully understand the role of business law within the legal system, one must view businesses as enes separate from their owners and employees. Similar to individuals, business enes are subject to legal rules designed to protect employees, the public, and the marketplace. Different types of business may be controlled by different types of laws. For example, Sales Contracts are controlled by and executed in accordance with the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC). New companies must take steps to comply with the law even before opening their doors for the first me. Business Law Aorneys are

rounely asked to form new enes on behalf of their clients by filing the necessary documents with the Secretary of State. Clients may also need assistance choosing the business enty best suited for their needs. Businesses can be formed as Corporaons, Limited Liability Companies (LLCs), Partnerships, and Sole Proprietorships, among others. Most of these business forms can be further customized to meet the needs of the company. Examples include Corporaons formed as "S-corps" in order to achieve tax savings, and Partnerships formed as "Limited Partnerships" to allow some owners to parcipate as investors only. While the selecon of the appropriate business enty will depend on numerous factors, the primary purpose of most enes is to shield owners from individual liability. Operang a business that is not set up to provide limited liability means that the owners are pung all of their personal assets within reach of the business's creditors.

By working with an aorney at the incepon of the business, individual exposure can easily be avoided. It is usually recommended that your business aorney should dra the internal agreements that will control how a new company is managed, profits are distributed, or how employees are handled. Every business that has more than one employee should have a employee manual. A few commercial transacons are within the ability of business owners to handle on their own. Howev-

CHAIRMAN'S CORNER Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce is on the move… we’ve come a long way in the past several years, and again accelerated our forward moon since December when we hired our new Execuve Director, Tony LoPiccolo. With Tony’s leadership, along with the guidance of the best Board of Directors I’ve served along side in my 30 years with this Chamber, we’ve implemented several new programs designed to enhance the value we give our members, and to to help grow their business, which is what our goal and mission is as Chamber of Commerce. Some of the programs we have implemented, including but not limited to, are: •

• •

Membership Development (working more closely with members and connecng business to other businesses who can benefit from each other) Knowledge is Power (monthly business to business workshops) ChamberMaster (providing guidance on how to best ulize this fantasc program to showcase their business and/or provide Hot Deals) Commiee Development (grew most all our commiees with members who have been excited to get involved) Home Business Survey (sent sur-

veys to home based businesses to see how the Chamber and City may beer assist in growing their business) Job Fair / Business Expo (off the charts this year - over 20 people actually applied for employment on site, and set up interviews with those businesses who parcipated)

We have several more programs and events that have been quite successful this year, and we are building on those successes to beer serve our members and business community. I thank the Board of Directors, Ambassadors, Commiee Chairs and Members of those commiees for their commitment of me. I love their energy, and their input. What an asset and they are VOLUNTEERS who willingly give of their me, talent and treasure. As the Chair, I am proud and honored to work closely with these individuals. But wait there’s more… I am equally proud to work with such stellar staff comprised of Tony LoPiccolo and Desiree Cassady. Tony has brought in over 72 new members since he was hired in December, along with our Operaons Manager, Des. The two of them have organized our office, records, put policies and proce-

dures in place, created partnerships with a lot of outside organizaons, and are connecng businesses with other businesses, and individuals creang long lasng relaonships. Des is extremely talented with her event planning skills, she makes it all appear seamless and with a smile. We are very fortunate to have them as part of the team… just get out of their way as they have people to see and places to go. Next, along with many other projects the Chamber has planned in the near future, we (Chamber, Directors, and volunteers, in partnership with the city) will be organizing an on site visit day to the businesses - another way to reach out to see what the Chamber and City can do to assist those businesses in our community. Yes, the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce is on the move… so come along, get on the train, and let’s work together for the beerment of our members and business community - you may even have a lot of fun! Biz Buzz HOW CAN LIFE INSURANCE HELP YOU?

You may not be aware of it, but September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. Of course, you probably recognize, at least in a general sense, the importance of life insurance, but do you know the various ways in which it can help you? Life insurance can play a sizable role in your ability to achieve some important financial goals, such as these: Helping your family maintain its lifestyle – If you are married and have young children at home, you and your spouse may need to work. If you were no longer around and your earnings were gone, could your family sll afford to live as they do now? Adequate life insurance can help them preserve their lifestyle. Helping your children connue their educaon – Even if you weren’t planning to foot the enre bill for your children’s college educaon, you sll might be doing what you can, such as contribung to a 529 educaon savings plan. Over the summer of this year, at their Board meeng, the new President, Joan E Wakeland, planned a great year for the members and guests of Menifee/ Sun City Woman's Club. If you are new in the Sun City/ Menifee area, the Woman's Club would be honored to have you come in and join us at one of our monthly meengs. At our September kick off meeng, our speaker will be Raven Hilden, CEO/Founder of Valley Resource

income was lost, could your family sll afford to connue these contribuons? With enough life insurance, you can improve the chances that your children will at least get some financial help for college or vocaonal training. Helping your survivors pay off debts – Are all your debts paid off? If not, you could be leaving your family on the hook for some of them, such as credit cards and car loans – not to menon your mortgage. Also, as uncomfortable as it may be to consider it, funeral and burial costs can easily run into the thousands. The proceeds of your life insurance policy can help pay down debts, handle your final expenses – and relieve your family of costly burdens. Helping your spouse build resources for rerement – It’s almost impossible for most of us to save too much for rerement. Your spouse may already have some rerement accounts, such as a 401(k) and an IRA, but will these be enough to sustain a long rerement? Through life insurance, you can potenally add significant amounts to your spouse’s rerement assets. As we’ve seen, you can accomplish a lot with life insurance. But how much do you need? If you want the appropriate amount of coverage, you should consider a variety

By answering these and other, similar quesons, you can arrive at a coverage level that’s suitable for your needs. Also, keep in mind that those needs will change – for example, if your children are grown and you’ve downsized your living arrangements, you may require less insurance than at earlier mes in your life. Life Insurance Awareness Month is a good me to remind yourself of the importance of insurance and of the need to own the

TECH TALK

Hello, my name is Yanik Gozlan from The Computer Repair Experts and I write “Tech Talk”. My goal is to give tips and information on the latest gadgets or common issues you may have with your technology. I have been helping people solve their technology problems since 2002. With multiple certifications and over 10 years of experience in this industry, I will try to educate and share common interests that most of the surrounding areas are talking about.

HOW BABY BOOMERS, GEN XERS, AND MILLENNIALS RESPOND TO TECHNOLOGY AND STYLE

jump between topics within your deck, or open another App, video, or file enrely. This will allow your presentaon to follow your conversaon, which will make for a much more authenc experience, as opposed to a canned, corporate slide show. When speaking, be your authenc self, and inject energy into your presentaon. Use bolder, alluring visuals. Minimize text bullet slides. And videos should be short. Given their different habits, it may seem daunng to deliver a presentaon that reaches across three different generaons. When in doubt, remember less is more. Visuals trump verbal. And, pictures and video are the most powerful way to communicate an idea. Technology will connue to advance, so the best presenters will use it to advance their message, no maer how old or young their audience is.

Over the years, we’ve seen lots of discussions around best pracces in how to engage audiences of different generaons. But what isn’t always discussed is the actual content you create before your presentaon. Baby Boomers are delaying rerement and remaining in the workforce. Millennials are entering and coming of age. And Gen Xers, those poor slackers, are sandwiched in the middle. Each cohort uses and reacts to presentaon technology and style differently. Baby Boomers Baby Boomers are the most disciplined group, with a longer aenon span, and a sense of meeng equee and protocol. Baby Boomers will suffer through the worst speaker and sll try to get something out of his or her presentaon because that’s what has been expected in business and in life. They have a longer concentraon span and will try to read through slides, focusing on the content presented as well as what the speaker is saying. They will study the slides you present, and analyze you as a speaker. They are a crical, thoughul audience. So, use images and video minimally only to reinforce what you are saying. More importantly, create a storyline with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Think of a 70s sitcom that opens with an establishing shot, has a conflict in the middle, and nice conclusion—all died up in 30 minutes. Think substance over style. Gen X Given the sheer size of the Boomer and Millennial generations, Gen X doesn’t get much attention these days. But they are in their 40s and 50s, taking on leadership roles in corporations and in government. Though you wouldn’t know it for all the attention marketers give to Boomers and Millennials, they are the decision makers for this and the next decade. Gen Xers came of age during the bale between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. They are comfortable with Office programs, and PowerPoint is second nature to

them. They rely on all its features—animaon, images and video—and like its linear, outline format. However, they sll require a convincing storyline and will look to the slides behind you to help them absorb what you are saying. In your slides, use clean, succinct bullet points. Avoid compound sentences and prose. Bold images and animaons will help highlight an important point. Use video to reinforce your story. Presenng style and presentaon graphics weigh equally. Millennials Millennials grew up with the Internet, so mulmedia and multasking are second nature to them. They will browse mulple screens on their mobile device while doing some other mundane task like grocery shopping or working out. Hence the need for “Don’t text and drive” campaigns! Presentaons appealing to this group must convey a sense of energy and must keep moving. Be creave and grab their aenon in the first 30 seconds of your pitch. If you start with, “Hello, my name is John Doe from Acme Company,” you have already lost them. They live in the now with social channels such as Instagram, Snapchat, and FaceTime. They value authencity, so your presentaon should reflect that. A typical linear PowerPoint slide show will bore them. Use interacvity and a variety of media. Include links so you can

SCOTT ROAD PROJECT EXPECTED TO BOOST ECONOMY AND ATTRACT NEW BUSINESSES

In cooperaon with Caltrans and the cies of Menifee and Murrieta, Riverside County previously had iniated the proposal to improve circulaon in the area and to meet future traffic needs, which was followed by a delay this summer. Caltrans approved this month to resume the project that is set to begin construcon by the end of next month and is projected to finish in two years. Carlos Geronimo, the Project Manager in Menifee, said that the exisng bridge is outdated, and it no longer has the capacity to handle the current volumes. “The new bridge will be a six-lane bridge that should be able to handle the growth in the area for the next 20 plus years,” he said. Improvements in the bridge include the widened exisng Northbound Off-Ramp, and the Northbound Loop Off-Ramp which will ease the traffic for cars going Westbound on Sco Road. The Southbound OnRamp has also been widened and elongated to provide a smoother flow onto the freeway. Cars travelling Westbound on Sco Road will be able to make a right-hand turn and a loop onto the freeway. Suarez said that the public may not see the actual construcon happening unl early October. The cost of the project will be approximately $57.8 million including design, right of way and construcon. For inquiries, residents can reach the project hotline at (951) 215-2288.
