new entity, working on new renovations and changes throughout since. Their Grand Opening, which takes place on November 14th., launches with the featuring of the latest Ronda Rousey fight as a main event. Previously, the establishment did not have a large emphasis on sports, especially UFC events. But the increase in attention towards the particular industry of MMA has garnered enough interest from the public to invest in possibly having regular showings of MMA fights in the future. Part of her investments included joining DirecTV subscribing to the NFL Sunday ticket, so patrons never miss a football game. Customers can expect to see a different Skybox Grill & Tavern, not just taste it. The team has been working around the clock to renovate the establishment, implementing new flooring, furniture, color palette and decor. Part of the changes customers can expect comes in the form of increased attention to customer service. Darci’s team has been briefed and trained using new techniques that emphasize on customer satisfaction. Page A2

SKYBOX GRILL & TAVERN GRAND OPENING NOVEMBER 14 By. C.J. Leger Straddling the borders of Menifee and Murrieta is the new and revamped Skybox Grill & Tavern. Freshly renovated and its features updated to include new special events and concept changes, the Skybox Grill & Tavern serves to compliment the area well in terms of a fresh approach to a hybrid tavern/gastropub. I caught up with Darci, one of the owners of the Skybox Grill & Tavern and asked her a few questions about the new changes. Patrons can expect from this revamped eatery starting with how long this venture has been in the works for her and her team. The actual time frame of this venture started 3 to 4 months ago. On September 1st., Darci and her team took over the Skybox Grill and Tavern and began running it as a Scan with your smart phone app and see what happens.

What is an “Executor?” In California the Executor is also called a personal representative. It is the person or entity nominated by the deceased person (the “decedent”) in a Will to administer the estate of that person as directed by the Will. Let’s start by stating that it's both an honor and a burden to serve as someone's executor. Page B1

SKYBOX GRILL & TAVERN GRAND OPENING NOVEMBER 14

By. C.J. Leger Some things however, have not changed. The previous Skybox Grill & Tavern emphasized on offering a home-town tavern for the area. Modern amenities have been implemented to increase the appeal of the establishment for younger audiences. Their famous burgers are still included on the menu. They are made from fresh ground beef and cooked to order. Some things however, have not changed. The previous Skybox Grill & Tavern emphasized on offering a home-town tavern for the area. Modern amenities have been implemented to increase the appeal of the establishment for younger audiences. Their famous burgers are still included on the menu. They are made from fresh ground beef and cooked to order. The concept has also remained. The overall of the establishment surrounds the elevated scenery of a skybox at a sports stadium surrounded by skyscrapers and city life. The new Skybox Grill is focusing on sports, which to many would seem like it was reopening as a sports bar. But it's much more than just a sports bar. Darci has done an excellent job of creating a gastropub-like tavern that offers new menu items made from more modern recipes, like new appetizers and sandwiches. New entrees have been implemented to choose from. While the menu may have been revamped, Skybox Grill & Tavern still rolls with hometown prices and atmosphere. Sports and special events would become a regular occurrence at the establishment. The tavern will offer up regular UFC matches, football games, the Superbowl and other special sports related events, as well as implementing special days like possible ladies nights and holiday inspired themes, starting with their October 31st., Halloween party night, and New Years Eve Party. A 3-day per week entertainment schedule has been implemented. On Wednesday nights, patrons can take part in karaoke from 7:00 pm-11:00 pm. On Friday nights, a live DJ will be featured from 9:00 pm-1:00 am. On Saturdays, customers can enjoy live music from 8:00 pm to midnight. Mondays and Thursdays are reserved for football nights.

Darci, also the owner of the French Valley Cafe, has had over 20 years of experience in the restaurant industry. She focused on planning out additions and features for the establishment before their Grand Opening and in-between negotiations to make the changes as seamless as possible. Which staple beers does Skybox Grill & Tavern have on tap? While they don't currently have a “staple” lineup, most likely it will continue to have Coors Light and Bud Light on tap. Two taps will be reserved for local breweries, Blood Orange Wit from Refuge Brewery Temecula and Stone IPA. It will rotate between local brewers. Currently, the establishment has six drafts on tap. November 14th is the grand opening at 4 pm. There will be a live entertainment and a drawing to win a free TV. This is one event which is heavily awaited. We wish Darci lots of success in her endeavor.

ARTS COUNCIL MENIFEE OPEN HOUSE AND FIRST JURIED ART SHOW A SMASHING SUCCESS!

MENIFEE PAINTER RECEIVES TWO HONORS FROM ARTS COUNCIL By Arts Council Menifee The first juried art show hosted by Menifee’s local art organization was billed as “Celebrating our Best of the Best” in visual art creations, and talented local artist Brian Dietz was awarded “Best of Show” for his “Winter B & B” painting. Art was once a livelihood for Brian Dietz – now it’s his lifeline. After being diagnosed with a complicated neurological disorder called Trigeminal Neuralgia, he had to resign from his regular graphics and marketing position to focus on his health. He continued creating artwork as a form of therapy. “Since becoming disabled I was determined to not become insignificant,” he said. “It was important for me to use my situation the best I could.” A Menifee resident since 2006, Dietz has also been named November’s Artist of the Month by Arts Council Menifee, which he joined more than two years ago. “Brian is a gifted artist,” said Linda Morrison, co-chair for ACM’s Visual Arts Division. “His paintings are realistic and he captures the magical scenery and light in his beautiful landscapes.” Dietz is inspired by the outdoors and works from many different sources to create works in various medium. He said sometimes the subject matter dictates the medium and other times it’s the environment. “Whenever I go anywhere, I am always looking to collect subject matter and inspirations for paintings,” he said. “My wife and I just returned from a long awaited trip to New England. I was excited to visit the same areas where artists such as Andrew Wyeth, Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper painted. It was truly inspiring, yet I can still be awed and inspired by a Menifee sunset, a Murrieta oak tree, a Temecula winery or a San Diego Beach.” He prefers to work from his own sketches and photographs but will use other reference material to better understand a subject, if necessary. “I love to paint plein air whenever possible. It is a great way to learn to capture shapes, color and values quickly. Sometimes a simple watercolor at the beach can lead to a nice oil or acrylic painting back in the studio,” said Dietz, 54. “If somebody can look at one of my paintings and feel enjoyment and feel like they are there, that’s my goal.” All of his formal training in art took place more than 30 years ago. “You never truly lose that passion to create,” Dietz said. “It may get misplaced from time to time but deep down the tendency is still there. He said there is as much mental stress as there are physical issues with a disability. “People often identify with each other based on the work they do and their jobs. Becoming disabled you are quickly removed from that social network. Battling depression is common,” he said. “Trigeminal Neuralgia is triggered or worsened by things like fa-

tigue and stress. Many of the side effects brought on by the medication to control the pain can cause mental as well as additional physical issues. Practicing art became a natural outlet for me.” He believes that God allows challenging things to happen for a reason and that his main purpose here is to serve Him. “I feel that my condition has allowed me to focus on my art in a way that has allowed me to improve my skills and help others,” Dietz said. “Painting is a process which requires patience and understanding. Slowing down to paint a picture can be very therapeutic. I love to paint pictures of places where I imagine I can see myself being. In a way it helps me transport myself to a very relaxing place.” The time he can devote to his art varies depending on how he is feeling at the moment. But he tries to manage his time as efficiently as possible and has learned to appreciate the process more and pace himself better. “I consider myself way more fortunate than most,” Deitz said. “I have a family that cares about me. I am able to get up, take a walk, see my kids and granddaughter, work on a painting, kiss my wife, worship my Lord and live in a free country just to name a few.” Morrison said that Dietz is always willing to share his artistic knowledge with other artists and added that his recognition as artist of the month is a well deserved honor. Although Dietz is not able to be as active with ACM as he would like, he said being involved even a little bit is better than not at all. “It helps give me a sense of purpose. I am able to connect with other people who have a common passion for art,” he said. “Menifee has some great artists who are really wonderful people with impressive backgrounds. I am always humbled by the level of talent at the shows. I am truly humbled by the recognition.” Dietz said ACM’s new space at 29995 Evans Road in Menifee is a great addition to the community for the patrons and artists alike. “Now that we have a permanent space, I hope that more people from the community take advantage of the opportunity to visit the gallery and see some inspiring art,” he said. “Art can do such tremendous things. Every painting is like an exercise to learn something or at least understand what I can do better.” For more information, please visit www.artscouncilmenifee.org or call 951-290-2781.

THANKSGIVING: FACTS, TIPS, & TRICKS The Very First Thanksgiving Menu To celebrate the first successful corn harvest in 1621, a group of Pilgrims and Native Americans held a three-day festival that’s now known as the first Thanksgiving. While history regarding the menu is a bit murky, the bountiful feast definitely included venison and wild fowl (probably duck or geese). Wild turkeys were common at the time, so it’s likely they were served as well. And, of course, the corn that they had harvested was eaten. Although corn was bountiful, now-traditional trimmings like sweet potatoes and potatoes were not served, since these vegetables weren’t common then. Also absent were the pumpkin and pecan pies and other sweets synonymous with today’s feasts. Dessert at the first Thanksgiving was probably limited to fruits like berries and stewed pumpkins since the Pilgrims’ sugar supply had dwindled by that fall. Easy Steps to a Perfect Thanksgiving: If you really want to make an unforgettable Thanksgiving dinner, you’ll need some tricks up your sleeve. From a moist and delicious turkey to lump-free gravy to the perfect pie crust, we have all the advice you need to help you cook the best Thanksgiving dinner ever!

and reheat in 350 degree oven just before serving next day. The turkey will be even better tasting than just cooked and it will be moist and already carved for your turkey dinner. Roasting chickens or turkeys breast-side down will help keep the breast meat moister. Storing Leftovers Within two hours after roasting, remove stuffing from turkey and carve the meat off the bones, then place in the refrigerator or freezer. For refrigerator storage, wrap the turkey slices and stuffing separately and eat within three days. To freeze, wrap in heavy foil or freezer wrap, or place in a freezer container. For the best taste, use stuffing within one month and turkey within two months.

TURKEY COOKING TIPS Your turkey should be the star of the show, so don’t serve a dried-out bird. Here are some tips for making a moist and tender turkey, along with a few other helpful hints.

PIE COOKING TIPS No Burnt Edges Before placing double crusted pies in the oven, loosely wrap aluminum foil around pie crust edges. This will help the edges from browning too quickly. Remember to remove the aluminum about 10 minutes before pies are ready to come out of the oven so the crust is properly browned.

Stuffing Turkeys Wrap stuffing in a cheesecloth bag. This makes removing the stuffing from the cavity incredibly simple, and no worries about bits left inside the bird.

Working with a Homemade Pie Crust Store homemade pie crust wrapped in wax paper then put in refrigerator (not freezer) until cool. Once it is cooled, it will roll out nicer and easier.

Roasting Turkeys When roasting turkey, roast as usual, then carve all meat from bones and place carved meat in juices from turkey. Add chicken broth to cover meat and cover. Store in refrigerator overnight

GRAVY COOKING TIPS • Whisk! Whisk! Whisk! It makes all the difference. If you don't have one, run out now and buy one! • In a cup or a bowl, mix several tablespoons

of flour with 1/2 C of the stock, cold from the refrigerator. Use a whisk and make sure this mixture is absolutely smooth. • Put the drippings and whatever amount of fat you want (zero to 1/2 C. depending on how much gravy you are making and how rich you want it). I add vegetable stock to the drippings and bring to a good solid simmer. In a nice thin even stream, add the cold flour/stock mixture to the pan. Use that whisk in a nice motion...too fast and it will encourage lumps. • To control the thickness of the gravy: if it's too thin, have a stand-by of additional flour and cold water or white wine mixture. If it's too thick, add white wine or water or stock. CRANBERRY COOKING TIPS Picking, storing, and cooking cranberries can be

tricky, so we’ve put together some basic cranberry tips to help you make a super cranberry sauce! • When washing, look for bright, plump cranberries and discard any soft, crushed, or shriveled berries. • Fresh cranberries will keep in the refrigerator for 4-8 weeks. • You can freeze fresh cranberries for longer storage. • You can substitute frozen cranberries in most recipes calling for fresh. • Do not wash cranberries until ready for use, as moisture will cause quicker spoilage. • When the recipe says "cook until the cranberries pop", don't expect popcorn. This simply means the berry's outer skin will expand until it bursts.

PURSE MISSING FOR OVER TWO DECADES FOUND INTACT By C.J. Leger The saying: “nothing is ever truly lost.”, is undoubtedly the concept behind the discovery and re-emergence of a mystery 20 years in the making. Women who buy designer know that many of the products manufactured by these brands last long, and for a Gucci purse lost more than 20 years ago, this also seems to be the case. Lynne Button purchased a $600 Gucci purse in 1995 with the intention of keeping it for as long as she could. However, on October 31st of that year, Lynne Button was heartbroken to find that her cherished purse had been stolen from her very own driveway as it sat in her parked van. After 20 years, the purse resurfaced when it was found by Michael Cassidy, as reported by CBS Local News. As he was on the job in a local citrus grove located in Valley Vista, there along a seemingly unsuspecting row of trees lay an old, dusty purse abandoned and forgotten. As any good samaritan would do, Cassidy jumped into his compassionate instincts and rummage the purse for indications of an owner. He found a social security card and a few documents then transported the purse to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. Soon thereafter, a deputy would be successful in locating Lynne Button and notifying her that her purse, which had been missing for over two decades, have been located none other than just a few blocks away from where she used to live when it was stolen. Once reunited, venturing into the purse would lead them into a journey through the past, as everything contained was still intact just as it was the day she last saw it. An outdated driver’s li-

cense, an old social security card and a lotto ticket were all found amongst the plethora of memories, which lived on in her now vintage Gucci. Button noticed some makeup, lipstick and mascara in the purse along with some credit cards for stores that no longer even exist. Also in relation to extinct brick-and-mortar establishments, was a matchbook originating from a business Button and her husband once owned. Even expired library cards were found. There's no doubt that that trip through memory lane would have brought back many happy memories, and according to reports, Button thanks Cassidy

for doing the right thing and returning her purse to an authority who could get it back to her. Cassidy, in turn, says that anyone in his position would have done the same thing. While no monetary valuables or cash were found in the purse, in the CBS report, Button says that everything else that was inside remains now priceless, memories of the time where her and her husband were the heads of a new young family and a flourishing restaurant they were both running. This story is a testament to the concept that not all have gone downhill in the world. There are still some good people out there.

ROSIE OWNER OF PROVECHO GRILL WIN TWO AWARDS Everyone told me I should write an article about a different restaurant. Why? Because this one gets all the press. Well! It's because they're the best in our area. How can I, as the food critic, not acknowledge the fact that this fantastic restaurant just won two of the most prestigious awards an eatery can acquire. Yes it is PROVECHO GRILL fabulous Mexican restaurant right here in our little town of Menifee. Rosie O’Connor the owner and her staff just received both the Pinnacle and Peoples Choice AWARDS for the best restaurant in the area. Going up against some of the largest establishments around she proved size doesn't always matter. Rosie took a small space in a strip mall hid-

den behind a Stater Bros. super market and turned it into the go to place for miles around. I have friends coming form San Diego to LA. To enjoy her food. When I say Rosie’s is a Mexican restaurant I don't do it justice. Yes it has all the normal Mexican fare but it also is so much more. Rosie travels all over the world to discover new and exciting recipes to add to her menu. From a chili appetizer to start your taste buds popping to a Seafood fajita that makes my mouth water just writing about it. The staff is so pleasant that after a couple of visits, you become a friend and not just a customer. Another nice touch is a happy hour 7 days a week with some of the best margaritas around. They also have entertainment on Thursdays with some excellent local talent performing for the patrons. I have been eating at PROVECHO GRILL from the beginning and have watched it grow from being an unknown eatery in a tough location to become the talk of the town. So to all the folks that said I should find another restaurant to write about, bear with me. There’s time for that. Right now PROVECHO GRILL and the owners and staff deserves all the accolades they can get.

THANKSGIVING COCKTAIL In Scotland (and elsewhere), St. Andrew's Day is held each November 30th. Like Thanksgiving, it includes a massive feast and marks the transition from fall to winter. This cocktail -- a Rob Roy / Perfect Manhattan riff -- offers sweet, savory and smoky notes that balance perfect with a turkey-and-cranberry festooned table. Sláinte, as the Scots say! Fall Feast Cocktail (from Laphroaig Whisky) 1 1/2 oz Laphroaig 10-year Scotch Whisky 1/2 oz Sweet Vermouth 1/2 oz Dry Vermouth 2 dashes orange bitters Combine ingredients in a mixing glass, add ice and stir well. Strain into a chilled rocks glass or martini glass. Garnish with a flamed orange peel.

EXECUTOR’S ROLE IN PROBATE

What is an “Executor?” In California the Executor is also called a personal representative. It is the person or entity nominated by the deceased person (the “decedent”) in a Will to administer the estate of that person as directed by the Will. Let’s start by stating that it's both an honor and a burden to serve as someone's executor. An executor – now also called a personal representative - is entrusted with responsibility for winding up someone's affairs. This can be a large or small task, depending on the size of the estate and the organization of the decedent. Once appointed, the Executor “runs” the estate much as a business person would run a business. The Executor makes sure all debts are paid, all taxes paid, all assets cared for, then distributes the remaining assets to the beneficiaries in accordance with law and the Will. If legal action is brought against the estate, the Executor is in charge of defending. Further, if the estate or the decedent has a legal claim against a third party, the Executor would be obligated to file suit to recover property that may belong to the estate. The law does not require an executor to be a legal or financial expert, but it does require the highest degree of honesty, impartiality, and diligence. This is called a "fiduciary duty" -- the

November, 2015 example, utility bills, mortgage payments, and homeowner's insurance premiums. Supervise the distribution of the deceased person's property. The property will go to the people or organizations named in the will or those entitled to inherit under state law. If you find yourself in the situation that you become appointed as an Executor you should contact an attorney to determine what probate process is necessary or if probate is even necessary. But take comfort in this – being an executor is always better than being the decedent.

duty to act with the upmost good faith and honesty on behalf of someone else. Executors have a number of duties, depending on the complexity of the deceased person's financial and family circumstances. Typically, an executor must: Find the deceased person's assets and manage them until they are distributed to inheritors. This may involve deciding whether to sell real estate or securities owned by the deceased person. Decide what probate court proceedings are needed. Most jointly owned assets pass to the surviving owner, without probate. In the event that the deceased person's property is worth less than a certain amount (how much depends on state law), it may be able to go through a

streamlined probate process. Figure out who inherits property. If the deceased person left a will, the executor will read it to determine distribution. If there's no will, the person in charge (sometimes called the administrator) will have to look at state law (called "intestate succession" statutes) to find out who the deceased person's heirs are. Handle day-to-day details. This may include terminating leases and credit cards, and notifying banks and government agencies -- such as the Social Security Administration, the post office, Medicare, and the Department of Veterans Affairs -- of the death. Use estate funds to pay continuing expenses. The executor may need to pay, for

NOW IS THE TIME TO THINK ABOUT YOUR NEXT TAX RETURN How about the tax implications of investments I own or am considering? In general, there are many tax implications when it comes to investments. Let’s take a deeper look into mutual funds. There are different tax considerations with mutual funds because you are subject to distributions made by the fund that are taxable. It is possible that fund positions you own may pay out a significant distribution before the end of the year, even though the fund itself may have a negative return for the year. Check to see the status of potential distributions of any fund you own. Keep in mind that this tax treatment doesn’t apply to funds held in tax-deferred vehicles like a 401(k) or IRA.

Your 2015 tax return isn’t due until April of 2016, but now is the time to consider your options for tax planning. Many of the tax-savings moves you can make for your 2015 return need to occur before the end of the year. Here are answers to questions you may have about tax planning strategies in the weeks ahead: Are there investment moves I should consider making before the end of the year? It is important to know what your tax considerations are before making any moves. For example, many investors worry about capital gains. One effective tax-saving strategy is to offset any capital gains you might realize in your portfolio with capital losses. If you have investment holdings that are worth less than what you paid for them, you could consider selling those positions and realizing a capital loss, particularly as a way to offset capital gains. This strategy may be appropriate for taxpayers who may have capital gains that are subject to taxation. Keep in mind that if you are in the 10 percent or 15 percent tax bracket, you qualify for a zero percent federal tax rate on long-term capital gains and qualified dividends, significant tax savings. In this case, “harvesting” capital losses is not a beneficial strategy. Before selling assets, make sure the move is consistent with your longterm investment strategy. Keep in mind that one of the biggest tax benefits is maintaining unrealized capital gains – growth in an investment that you continue to hold. Gains are only taxable when you sell an investment.

Are there steps I can take to reduce taxes on my income? If you have the ability to manage your income, you may want to pay attention to whether your income level is closing in on a threshold point that moves you into a higher tax bracket. For example, a married couple filing a joint return in 2015 with taxable income above $74,900 (after deductions and personal exemptions) would be in the 25 percent tax bracket. That doesn’t mean all income is subject to a 25 percent tax rate, as income is taxed in steps (everything under $74,900 would be taxed at a 15 percent rate or less). But by reaching the 25 percent tax bracket, any net long-term capital gains realized would be subject to a 15 percent tax at the federal level. By keeping income (including any gains) below $74,900, a married couple remains in the 15 percent tax bracket, qualifying them for a zero percent longterm capital gains tax rate. Finding ways to keep income under thresholds can be important for different reasons for people with varying income levels. Are there ways to cut taxes by increasing my savings to retirement plans? Any pre-tax contributions to workplace savings plans or tax-deductible contributions to IRAs (if you qualify based on your income) can reduce your taxable income in 2015. You should also consider making contributions to a Roth IRA if you qualify, as this has the potential to create a source of tax-free income for retirement. Although Roth contributions cannot be deducted from current taxes, it is important to make them annually as contribution amounts are limited. In 2015, you can contribute up

to $5,500 to an IRA ($6,500 for those age 50 and older). You have until April 15, 2016, to make IRA contributions for 2015.

before making any decisions that may affect your 2015 tax return, be sure to consult your tax advisor or attorney regarding specific tax issues.

When should I make charitable donations? Your favorite charities would likely prefer any gifts to be made as soon as possible. To claim deductions on your 2015 tax return, donations must be made by December 31, 2015. Keep in mind that to claim a charitable deduction, you need to itemize deductions and have a written record, either a bank statement or a receipt from the charity. Biz Buzz SOMEONE IS CHASING YOU Someone is chasing you, OK, not for real but in the world of business someone wants your success. Let’s get off the Politically Correct Train and move past the thought of the whole world wants everyone else to succeed. The majority of people want you to fail, or at least fall down to their level so they feel better.

Oh, did I hit a nerve? Are you not part of the majority? Honestly, if you are reading this you probably are not in that category, but read on anyway. We all know hard work pays off but is everyone (or anyone) willing to actually put in the time and sacrifices for greatness? The world revolves around the Sun at the same pace for everyone on planet Earth but some do more with time than others. It comes down to Time Management and what you do with your time. Television, Social Media and gossip are large time wasters for productivity. Some people spend as much time doing a combination of these three things more than they actually work. Sitting in front of the TV watching The Real

Page B 3 Housewives is not going to get you closer to your goals. Watching videos of cats on Facebook is not going to get you closer to your goals. Gossiping to your coworker about your neighbor’s sister’s cousin’s dog is not going to get you closer to your goals. The reality is your competition is hungry for your success and they are not watching TV, on Facebook or gossiping. They are replacing your dreams for theirs and chasing down your clients and customers. Turn off the TV tonight and read a good book. Put your announcement or message on social media and shut it off without scrolling through the feed or pictures. Instead of gossiping, discuss how to vote in the upcoming election or talk about Best Practices and share stories of success. It’s really up to you how fast you want to run, the person chasing you can only catch you if you let them. Stay motivated, stay hungry and remember to keep taking your business Up One Level.

START YOUR OWN INVESTMENT “TRADITIONS” Thanksgiving is just around the corner. And like all holidays, this one has plenty of traditions, such as Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (started in 1924) and football (the first broadcast Thanksgiving Day game was played between the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears in 1934). Traditions are important, and you may want to establish some in one of the key activities of your own life: investing. So, what sort of investment traditions could you start? Here are a few ideas: Invest regularly. By definition, engaging in a tradition means performing the same acts over and over. This type of behavior can impose discipline and consistency to your investing. For example, consider contributing the same amount of money each month to the same investments. When the price of these investments is down, your contribution will pay for more shares – in other words, you’ll be “buying low,” one of the key principals of investing. And when the price of your investments is up, you’ll be a savvy enough investor to buy fewer shares. Over a long period, this technique can help lower the pershare price of your investments, but it does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss. To make it easier to follow through, you could set up monthly, automatic purchases of these investments from your checking or savings account. Increase 401(k) contributions when you get a raise. Why not make it a tradition to boost your contributions to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan every time your salary increases? Your 401(k) is a great way to save for retirement, as your contributions are typically made with pretax dollars, resulting in lower

taxable income, and your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis. Even if you don’t reach the contribution limit (which, in 2015, is $18,000, or $24,000 if you’re 50 or older), you can help yourself make progress toward your retirement goals if you give your 401(k) a “raise” every time you get one. Review your progress at least once a year. Pick one day a year – perhaps a “milestone” day, such as your birthday or wedding anniversary – to review your overall investment picture. Are your investments performing the way you had hoped? Is your portfolio properly diversified, or are there gaps you need to address? Are you investing too aggressively or too conservatively? A yearly review of your investments and long-term financial strategy, possibly with the help of a financial advisor, can help keep you on track toward your objectives. Of course, you don’t need to wait 12 months before looking over your situation; you may need to adjust your holdings during the course of any given year, in response to changes in the financial markets or your individual needs. But by committing yourself to at least one full-scale review a year, you can greatly reduce unpleasant “surprises” while staying abreast of exactly where you are and where you’re headed. On Thanksgiving, you can enjoy the holiday’s traditions, along with those that may be unique to your family. And someday, you may well be thankful that you followed some productive investment “traditions.” This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

TECH TALK

Hello, my name is Yanik Gozlan from The Computer Repair Experts and I write “Tech Talk”. My goal is to give tips and information on the latest gadgets or common issues you may have with your technology. I have been helping people solve their technology problems since 2002. With multiple certifications and over 10 years of experience in this industry, I will try to educate and share common interests that most of the surrounding areas are talking about.

THREE WARNING SIGNS THAT EMAIL IS MALICIOUS

Email spam filtering is far better than it used to be. There was a time when nearly every scam email would land in your inbox. Thankfully that's not the case anymore—especially if you're a Gmail user. But no system is perfect. Every now and then a scam message will manage to slip into your inbox. But how do you know when you're looking at a scam or not? Here are three basic tip-offs you can look for to figure out whether you're looking at an email with dishonest intentions. They're hardly an exhaustive list, but more often than not one of these tips will save you from getting suckered.

that link very, very carefully and it should become obvious if it's a scam. Here's an example that landed in my inbox just the other day. (In the interests of public safety, I've removed parts of the link.) idmsa.apple.com-idmswebauth-classiclogin. htm.artXXia.es/XXXXXXX If you're not playing close attention, you'd see Apple.com at the front of that link and just figure this was an email from Apple. Unfortunately, you'd be wrong. Keep going past "apple.com" and you'll see the site the link actually leads to is "artXXia.es". With URLs this long and complicated, how do you tell what's authentic and what's not?

1. Dear customer One thing spammers are counting on is that you, the target, don't realize there's this ancient technology in Microsoft Word and other apps called mail merge. This feature creates a template that automatically uses a customer list to fill in names, the last four digits of a credit card or bank account number, and other personal information. That means when I receive an email from my bank, I expect it to say "Dear Ian" or "Dear Ian Paul," but certainly not "Dear Customer" or "Dear ," or, worse, no salutation whatsoever. If you see an email addressed to "Dear customer" that asks you to follow a link to fill in your account details, chances are it's a phishing scam. That's not to say that you should automatically trust any email specifically addressed to you. But you can be sure that if you get an email from a company you do business with like a major bank, retailer, or technology company, they will address you by name in any email.

Here's a good rule of thumb: keep reading a URL until you hit the back slash "/". Once you hit the back slash, back up until you're at the first period before the backslash (in our example it's ".es"). Everything you see in front of that period is the full address of the webpage you're headed for. Thus our example doesn't lead to idmsa.apple.com, but a subdomain of artXXXogia.es. By the way, you should always trust your own reason ahead of link scanners and other security software to ensure your safety. In my tests, several security suites that scanned the full version of our example URL returned a clean bill of health for the site, even though to human eyes this is clearly not an Apple website.

2. That link is crazy If you're unsure about an email, hover your mouse over any links you see in the body of the message (just whatever you do don't click it!). Next, look at the lower left corner of your browser or email client. You should see the exact address of the link you're hovering over. This is where things start to get critical. Read

3. It has an attachment If a malicious actor can't sucker you with a phony link they will try to trick you into downloading a file packed with malware. Here's a classic example I came across recently. A message supposedly from Booking.com landed in my inbox with an invoice attachment asking for final payment on an overdue item. This message was playing on the sudden emotional horror at thinking you may have an unpaid item with a service you use. Without thinking twice, you may soon be downloading an attachment just to make sure the company didn't make a mistake. That's when you need to stop and breathe. Another solid rule of thumb is to NEVER

download an attachment you're not expecting, no matter who it's from. Complicating this issue, however, is there are a few people that you may expect to send you unsolicited (or semi-unsolicited) attachments such as your child's teacher or a co-worker with an animated GIF obsession. In those cases, it will be up to you to decide whether or not it's risky to open up those attachments. If nothing else, make sure the message from your child's teacher is well

written and makes logical sense (Christmas party plans in January? I don't think so). And if you do decide to download the attachment, save it to your hard drive and scan it with an antivirus tool before you open it. Email is far less risky to use than it used to be. Nevertheless, it's still an extremely popular attack method for the bad guys. So it pays to keep your email sleuthing skills sharp for those times when the bad stuff gets through your email provider's defenses.

Local MEET SARAH SCHNEIDER

By Robbie Motter- Staff writer Veterans Day is a solemn and thoughtful time when we all can give thanks to all those that have served and are serving in America’s Military Forces. In 1919, November 11, Veterans Day was first called Armistice Day to commemorate the ending of WWI. It was first proclaimed by Woodrow Wilson. In 1945, a WWII Veteran worked very hard to expand Armistice Day to include all veterans. In 1947, with the help of Dwight D. Eisenhower, Veterans Day was celebrated the first time nationally. In 1954, Congressman Ed Reese presented a bill that was eventually signed into law changing Armistice Day to Veterans Day, officially. Right here in our communities, we have many who have retired from serving and many are still serving as well as those in the reserves. We honor all of them and thank them for their service. 1Lt. Sarah Schneider is a dynamic young woman who is currently in the Army serving our country as are many others across this great nation. She will be speaking on Veterans Day, at Merna’s Cafe and Grill on November 11 at 11:30 am for the Menifee Nafe Lunch Meeting. This meeting is open to guests as well as Nafe members. 1Lt. Sarah Schneider attended the ROTC Program at California Baptist University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Graphic Design and Digital Media. She commissioned into the U.S. Army Reserves May 2012 as an Adjutant Officer. In June 2012, she attended the Adjutant General Basic Officer Leaders Course at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

Her first duty assignment was located at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside, California with the 304th Sustainment Brigade. From September 2012 to January 2014 she served as the Strength Manager and the Brigade S1 Officer in Charge (OIC). In August 2012, she attended the Combat Support Training Exercise at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin and was awarded the Army Achievement Medal while operating as the Brigade S1. During September 2012 to February 2013, she was appointed as the Movement Officer for the 304th Sustainment Brigade’s 2014 deployment. She attended the Mobilization Deployment Planning Course in December 2012 at Fort Lee, Virginia. She attended the Reserve Component Unit Mobilization Planner Course in January 2013 at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Currently, 1Lt. Schneider is still in the 304th Sustainment Brigade but has repositioned to the Support Operations as the Human Resource Operations Officer. She attended the Human Resource Operations Branch in Fort Jackson, South Carolina and the Unit Prevention Leader course in Riverside, California. 1Lt. Schneider participated as the Night Shift OIC for Combined Resolve III, an overseas training exercise in Hohenfels, Germany, a Joint Multinational Readiness Center and received the Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon. In April 2015 she attended the Adjutant General Captains Career Course in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. She was selected as OIC for the Brigades Nation Wide Move (NWM) exercise in July 2015 for the remainder of 3rd and 4th QTR in the absence of the prior OIC a Lieutenant Colonel. While operating as the NWM OIC, she was duty detailed as the Mobilization Action Officer for the 304th Sustainment Brigade’s 2016 deployment as well. Over the course of her career, thus far, she remains actively involved in her community. She has been honored as guest speaker for her JROTC Military Ball at Kaiser High School in Fontana, California and spoke at March Mountain Continuation High School for their Action Program Career Day in Riverside, California. CO-PARENTING MEETING GONE WRONG

NEW TRAFFIC SIGNALS IMPROVE SAFETY, TRAFFIC FLOW NEAR TWO MENIFEE SCHOOLS Menifee motorists take note: new traffic signals have been installed at two busy intersections in the city. Traffic engineers turned on signals this week at the intersection of Holland and Bradley Roads near Paloma High School, and at Aldergate and Menifee Roads near Freedom Crest Elementary School. The city collaborated with the Menifee United School District to address safety and traffic challenges near local schools. These new traffic lights are part of the solution Menifee is incorporating to create a safer environment for both pedestrians and motorists. The city has also adjusted speed limits and used Safe Routes to Schools grant funds to improve sidewalks and accessibility near some schools. “Working together with the school district to address safety issues is a great example of how the city works to improve our residents’ quality of life,” said City Engineer and Public Works Director Jonathan Smith. “Unfortunately, installing these traffic signals took longer than expected due to equipment being on backorder from the manufacturer, but the end result is an improvement to traffic flow and pedestrian safety.” Motorists are reminded to observe speed limits, especially the reduced speed limit in school zones.

by C.J. Leger Tragedy struck in a McDonald’s last month, when a man was fatally shot by a woman in the middle of the crowded eatery. The victim of this outrageous crime has been identified as Joseph Hennings, a 39-year-old man from Murrieta.

The McDonald’s, which is located on the corner of Bradley Rd. and McCall Blvd., was full of patrons at the time of the shooting, at around 6 p.m. on Friday, October 9th. A report by KTL5 stated that local police arrived at the scene at around 6:07pm after receiving a 9-1-1 call involving a firearm incident at the restaurant. Shortly after, authorities from the Central Homicide Unit and the Menifee Police Department took command of the crime scene and began an investigation. According to sources, a 35-yearold woman from Big Bear was arrested and identified as Amanda Hardwood, the ex-partner of the

deceased. According to a report published by PE, the Sheriff ’s Department has not issued any official statements as to the motive of this seemingly out of the ordinary crime. Sources close to the deceased stated that the McDonald’s served as a mutual meeting ground for Hardwood and Hennings, who regularly came to the chain to exercise their parental rights. According to reports, both Hardwood and Hennings shared a son, which Hennings saw via supervised visitations held at the franchise. This time, it seems, the meeting took a horrible turn and Hardwood gunned down the father of

her child. She is currently being remanded at the Robert Presley Detention Center and being held on a $1 million bail. The Riverside County Sheriff ’s Department Central Homicide Unit is actively asking for any information that can help shed some light on why these events took place. Anyone with information is encouraged to call (951) 955-2777.

Crime JUSTICE FOR MILITARY WIFE KIDNAPPED, TORTURED, AND KILLED

by C.J. Leger The family of a 22 year old woman and former military wife has just received justice. After a long trial, a jury has convicted three individuals with the horrendous attempted sexual assault and torturous killing of Brittany Killgore. The three were

convicted of first-degree murder for their part in the sadistic sex ring. Shortly before her death, Brittany Killgore was married to a Marine currently on tour in Afghanistan. She had just filed for divorce and found herself caught up in the promising prospect of a luxurious dinner cruise she came across online. Unbeknownst to her, she was about to embark on a deadly jour-

ney into the hands of Louis Ray Perez, 49, Dorothy Maraglino, 40, and Jessica Lynn Lopez, 28. The trio lured her out and subsequently kidnapped her. Her body would not be found until 4 days later around the Lake Skinner area. In a report published by CBS News, the family of Killgore made a statement after the verdict was read, with Killgore's mother stating: “Our daughter was a beautiful young woman, inside and out,” she continued saying, “And unfortunately she ran across people that were not good... were monsters and took her life. She is going to be missed for the rest of our lives.” The victim's DNA was found in the Perez’s vehicle during the investigation in evidence, including a stun baton and what seemed to be a plastic material sheet. Jessica Lynn Lopez’s attorney made various statements in court insinuating that his client was nothing more than a victim to the BDSM pair Perez and Maraglino. In his address to the jury, Sloan Ostbye stated that Lopez was rather stupid, a gullible person forced to serve the pair sexually and take the fall for Killgore’s murder, which according to the attorney, she did not take part in. To the pair, Lopez was referred to as “Money Bitch” and she was given the same treatment similar to that

of a domestic dog. In complete opposition, Brad Patton, Perez’s attorney, addressed the jury to say that Lopez was in fact the perpetrator of the murder. In Maraglino’s defense, her attorney told the jury that she was not as involved in the BDSM lifestyle, that she had left the life when she was pregnant with a child she shared with Perez. Her defense was geared toward con-

vincing the jury that her only role in the murder was helping to cover it up. In the midst of media coverage about the crime, Killgore was mistakenly linked to the BDSM lifestyle, which the prosecutor made sure to correct during the trial. The trio was also convicted of kidnapping, torture and attempted sexual battery. Their sentencing is scheduled for November 19.

RECRUITING NEW MEMBERS ON THE MARK

with Robbie Motter We have many organizations locally and one of the most important factors in the success of any organization is recruiting members. New members bring ideas and enthusiasm to an organization, and they can also renew the energy of a group that has lost its drive. However, as demands on our time increases, so does the competition for membership. With every organization looking to recruit new members it is important to keep a few things in mind to separate your organization from others and make your recruitment efforts a success.

information about your organization. Don’t use the shotgun approach, which amounts to little more than filling a meeting hall with bodies. Truly successful organizations have diverse memberships, allowing for more creativity, increased access to the community and a more positive group experience.

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR

As we enter into the 11th month of the year, the Holiday season is approaching very fast. Stores and people are already preparing for Holiday shopping. As we all know, things are very expensive these days and there is just not enough room in the budget for things to go wrong. However, that’s not how good Ole Murphy’s Law works. Of course when you are expecting all of your family from out of state to come stay the week with you, a leak happens. So as you are preparing to write down your Holiday lists of meals and gifts, here is a check list for you to make sure that the plumbing in your home is safe and will get you through the rest of the year. First, and foremost, the news forecasts this winter to be very cold and rainy. For those of you that have any plumbing pipes ran over head in the attic make sure that both hot and cold pipes are insulated. Insulating these pipes will protect them from freezing and splitting. Check underneath the bathroom and kitchen sinks and inspect the angle stops and flex lines. Make sure there are no signs of green/blue residue or calcium spots (white crystal like substance). If you notice this, make sure to have them replaced. If there is a bathroom that seldom

gets used make sure to run all the fixtures. This includes sinks, shower/tubs, and toilets for several minutes to make sure there are no leaks. Turn the angle stops on/off to make sure that they will still turn. If your gas and/or electric water heater is 10 years or older and makes a popping noise like rocks are in it, it might be a good idea to have it replaced. In the winter time we use hot water more than in the summer. A water heater tank at its life expectancy is bound to have problems if it is having to work harder. Be sure to check for loose or wobbling toilets. Wobbling/rocking toilets are a sign of a failed wax ring, which means that water can and eventually will start to leak out around the bottom of the toilet. Listen for any continuously running toilets. If you have to jiggle the handle for the toilet to stop making noise 5 minutes after it is flushed the inner toilet guts are worn out and need to be replaced. This can also help reduce your water bill. If you need an experienced, friendly plumber to assist you in replacing these items in your home before it is too late, please don’t hesitate to call Menifee Plumbing.

Sincerely, Tony Falco, CR Call our office to make an appointment Monday-Friday 8am-5pm 888-333-5325.

POLICE OFFICER SAVES VICTIM OF SUICIDE ATTEMPT by C.J. Leger In the midst of news about police controversy and excessive force, comes a story of pure compassion and human heart. At 4 pm on October and 26, an afternoon must like any other, Officer Jennifer Brandt saved the life of a woman who could not save her own. Officer Jennifer Brandt was driving near Newport Road on the 215 freeway traveling in a marked patrol car when she spotted a woman on the overpass, seemingly attempting to commit suicide. Her hand was on the rails and her right leg was already on the other side of the banister, which would normally reach the average adult by waist. Surrounded by bystanders, the woman continued with her intent, but not before Officer Brandt parked her vehicle and, in an almost instant reaction, reached into her instincts and training and ran over to the overpass, pass the bystanders and grabbed the woman by her biceps to pull her down. Still unnamed, the woman was detained by Officer Brandt and held down by her and two other bystanders before being transferred to another facility for a mental evaluation. Officer Brandt’s quick-thinking and believe in the preservation of life, jumped into action to save a woman who may not have been mentally

capable of understanding the consequences of what she was about to do. Statistics provided by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention show that suicide was on the rise in 2013, at its highest since 1986. There

were over 12.6 suicides per every 100,000 individuals in 2013, slightly lowered in comparison to the 1986 roundup, which recorded 13 suicides per 100,000 people. Over the past 5 years political atten-

tion has been on the concept of suicide. Celebrities, politicians, teachers, peers and everyone in between have come together to offer support to those contemplating suicide, often publishing videos with the motto “You Are Not Alone”. While teen suicide in the United States is in the eyesight of the media, statistics show that the highest rate of suicide occurs in middle-aged individuals and individuals over the age of 85. Teen suicide has drastically decreased in response to efforts to keep awareness up and help those in need. Many studies show that the increased acceptance of the LGBT communities by younger crowds has aided in this fight. If you or anyone you know is suffering from suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK. Learn about the various programs in place to help families struggling with this situation, like the Out of the Darkness Community Walk Campaign and the Mental Health Parity Petition, which has been established to collect signatures urging Washington to financially support field advocates, volunteers, walkers, and more.
