BEAT THE HEAT: 7 BEST PLACES TO COOL OFF IN MENIFEE THIS SUMMER By: Michelle Rivas The drought in the US has undoubtedly hit extremely hard in California and probably more than any other state but here in Menifee, there are a lot of fun and exciting places to cool off and have a great time! Here are the top 7 places in Menifee to cool off (and maybe have a drink or two!): Menifee Lake Country Club: From the beautiful scenery to their elegant ballroom, this country club is perfect for golfing in the daytime and dining and drinking in the evening. The club includes a variety of recreational facilities within the club and a couple of places to grab something to eat and drink including their restaurant, the Palm View Grill and the Mountain View Lounge which is open for happy hour 7 days a week- what more could you ask for? Not to mention, the club also hosts a Champagne brunch every Sunday so it’s the perfect place to

head to after mass with the family so it’s a great place to relax during the sweltering summer. Address: 29875 Menifee Lakes Dr. Eller Park: This Park is big enough for the whole family and has something for everyone. The park includes a lighted baseball field, basketball courts, play structures, picnic tables, BBQ grills, and a running/jogging track. I chose this park amongst the others because it has amenities that cater to all ages and is the perfect place to cool off whether it be hosting a birthday party for your toddler or having a picnic with your significant other- it has something for everyone. Address: Highway 74 and Antelope Road BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse: Escape the summer heat at BJ’s with their specialty beers and amazing food. BJ’s caters to whatever your taste buds desire because their menu is as thick as an encyclopedia; their full of options including lunch specials, happy hour, diet meals, dessert, soups, salads, ribs, steaks, pasta, and any alcoholic beverage you can think of and I’m just scratching the surface of all the different food and drinks you can order. BJ’s is especially perfect for the students of Mt. San Jacinto College because it is only a couple minutes away; it’s lit-

erally right around the corner for your happy hour needs. Address: Countryside Marketplace, 30208 Haun Rd Pitstop Pub Sports Bar & Grill: This grill is great for a laid-back getaway after work or school. Pitstop has all the fixings including pool tables, multiple TV’s, a DJ, a dance floor, an open mic night, live musicians and let’s not forget the very essential happy hour! This grill is also a local favorite because true to their name, they’re the go-to spot for sporting events and game showings with a TV at every angle. Make sure to stop by especially this summer since its FIFA soccer season! Address: 26900 Newport Rd Provecho Grill: This Mexican restaurant and grill is a local favorite and has generated a lot of buzz. Provecho offers live music, happy hour (not to mention their popular margaritas), a cute little patio to enjoy the sunset, and unique Mexican pastries. The restaurant has beautiful Day of the Dead décor on their walls and an eclectic vibe that will make you want to dance all night this summer! Address: 26862 Cherry Hills Blvd Continuation on Page A2

SUSAN O’CONNELL AWARDED FOR HER ACTING AND WRITING TALENTS By Arts Council Menifee Susan O’Connell’s creative forte has always been acting and she started writing as a means of creating a one-woman play so she could act even more. Shirley Wible, the Adult Programmer at the Sun City Library and Arts Council Menifee Literary Division Chair, has had the pleasure of O’Connell presenting at the library for several adult programs. “Her one-woman show ‘Memoirs of a Madam’ in which she portrays a Wild West madam with a big heart, received a standing ovation,” Wible said. For her contributions to the art scene, O’Connell has been recognized as July’s Artist of the Month by Arts Council Menifee. In her play, she portrays Denver’s notorious Mattie Silks. Although the subject matter of this production is the “painted ladies” of the old west, the stories are tastefully done and told with respect and often humor. She has been refining and performing the show since the 1980s and has presented it in five states. “History tries to play down this particular field of endeavor but we can’t deny the contribution these ladies made to the settling of our country,” said O’Connell, of San Jacinto. Strong family connections to the Wild West include her great-great-grandmother, Amelia Ann Earp, cousin of Wyatt Earp. Her character’s time period is the 1880s, which she has researched for her costumes and props. “My grandfather, Willis O’Connell, was one of (Miles City) Montana’s best and well respected auctioneers and my father, Wes O’Connell, was one of the west’s last true cowboys,” she said. Although her passion lies with educating people about this part of U.S. history, her writing skills continue to take her in many other directions.

O’Connell started writing poetry in 2002 and fell in love with the process. “Telling a story in rhyming verse is difficult; it’s like putting together a puzzle, all the parts must fit or you haven’t done it right,” she said. Her connection to Arts Council Menifee began when O’Connell attended a poetry class sponsored by the Sun City Library and conducted by Wible. After hearing a few of her poems, Wible invited her to perform her one-woman play in the Arts Council’s

Page A 3 awards, she much prefers to perform her poetry. “It just gives me such pleasure to hear and see the positive reactions. I tell a story and I think that’s what people want to hear,” she said. “My dream is to be able to travel with a group or on my own performing my poetry.” She said it was a great thrill to have one of her poems published by American Cowboy Magazine online and one in its printed edition when she won first place in poetry contest.

MEET STEVE BEARSE AND JEFF KIRKLAND THE OWNERS OF THE CORPORATE ROOM IN WILDOMAR, CA AND NEW LIFE CULINARY CREATION

By Robbie Motter, staff writer

I recently attended a Wildomar Chamber breakfast that was held at the Corporate Room in Wildomar. This is a hidden treasure that I had no idea even existed. It is located on 34846 Monte Vista Dr in Wildomar, right off of Baxter Road and the 15 Freeway. What a great place, they have everything you would need to hold a fantastic event of any kind. The Corporate Room has 2,500 square feet and it’s really nice, go to thecorporateroom.com and you can see great photos of the place for all kinds of events. The great thing is that because they also own New Life Culinary Creations they can do all the catering as well. Jeff and Steve were old high school classmates and connected after 30 years! Jeff ’s wife Monica Kirkland, met Steve at a Murrieta/Temecula Chamber event and she found out that he and Jeff went to school together! When she got home to tell Jeff, he searched him up on Facebook and the friendship was reunited! Then to make things more interesting, they ran into each other while having breakfast after church one morning and exchanged numbers. Well one thing led to another and they started on a journey to launch a catering company! Not just any company but to launch what is to be the most respected catering company in the Valley, New Life Culinary They purchased the New Life Culinary Creations about two years ago and then seven months ago purchased the Corporate Room. It took two months to redecorate the Corporate Room which was done by Jeff ’s wife Monica Kirkland who owns New Life Photo and Design. They have done catering events all over the Southwest Valley area and now with their Corporate Room they have a facility to do any type of event right there. You can go to http://www.newlifecatering.com/ to learn more about what they do in their catering business. Steve has been in the Food and Beverage industry for over 20 years. He attended Culinary School at Cerritos College and graduated with special recognition from the President of Cerritos College. He and his wife Cathy are great friends of our Rosie O’Connor the Chef at Provecho Grill in Menifee. Steve has worked at many high end casual food establishments including the Hyatt Regency Long Beach, Cafe Nordstrom, Pat and Oscars, and Storm Stadium. His career really blossomed when he was the Corporate Chef of the Market Broiler Restaurants. In his time there he opened up 2 full service restaurants from the ground up each doing over $5 million in annual sales. He has also opened

Menifee Buzz—www.menifeebuzz.com up multiple contract food service venues, including Harvest Christian Fellowship Church in Riverside (which has over 20,000 members), Cal Baptist University, and the atrium in the county building in downtown Riverside. Steve is a member of the American Culinary Federation, Inland Empire Chapter. He has competed in numerous culinary competitions including best Chef of the Inland Empire and Oak Grove School Chef Open at Pechanga Casino in Temecula where he got 3rd Place Overall! Steve has a driving passion for food and loves what he does. Steve has been married for over 20 years to his wife Cathy and has two beautiful daughters and one granddaughter. Jeff Kirkland - The Home Cook 2.0 and Jeff ’s Business Partner Jeff began his passion for cooking in 2009. After watching The Food Network, his creative mind spun into thinking up dishes he could cook for

his family and friends. His wife, Monica often provides him with secret ingredients where he has 30 minutes to prepare an entree for his family! Jeff says he enjoys this family time. In 2011, he was asked to cater a wedding with 80 guests and the result was TOTAL SUCCESS! In 2013, Jeff created The Home Cook 2.0. When asked what it is, Jeff.” His desire is to inspire people to get in the kitchen and start cooking. He says, “You will be surprised what you can create, if

you just get started!” Jeff and his wife Monica live in Murrieta, Ca. and they have 5 wonderful children, Cassidy, Smith, Braden, Wade, and Channing. So keep them in mind when you are looking for a location to hold a special event, take time to look at their websites it will give you a great vision of what they offer.

Five Perris Union High School District students were recently honored at the Perris Valley and Menifee Valley Chambers of Commerce Student of the Year Scholarship and Recognition dinner held on May 25th at the Lake Elsinore Storm Diamond Club. Students competed in a vigorous scholarship application process that included two essay questions and each winner received a $2,220 scholarship donated by community organizations and businesses. They also received many gifts and certificates also donated by local businesses, organizations and dignitaries. Students shared from their heart what it meant to receive this award and expressed their thanks of support from family and the community. Reyna Nevarez is Perris High School’s March’s Student of the Month and now the Student of the Year. Reyna is described as a model student and a great leader by her principal Mr. Nick Hilton. She is an all-around phenomenal young woman who is involved in AVID, varsity volleyball, and is president of Friday Night Live (FNL). Being in FNL is where Reyna truly demonstrates her passion for helping others. She has been vital in helping to organize several projects throughout the school year. One of those projects is a powerful video called “If You Knew My Story”. The video was produced by FNL and shows several testimonies of students, teachers, and staff who have shared some of their personal struggles. Reyna is included in this video as she shared that she has lived with the fact that her father has been in prison her entire life. Throughout all of this her mother has worked hard to raise her and her siblings and teach them

Menifee Buzz—www.menifeebuzz.com

to have compassion towards others. Reyna has taken the lessons she’s learned from her mother to heart. She has been such an inspiration that Reyna plans to continue that legacy of compassion she’s learned and apply it to her career as a psychologist. Reyna will be attending UC Santa Barbara to obtain her doctorate degree. Heritage High School’s Student of the Year is Desiree Washington. Desiree is the epitome of perseverance and overcoming obstacles. Born premature and with a condition that has resulted in severe hearing loss, she has worked hard to overcome those obstacles to become one of Heritage’s outstanding students. Her principal, Mr. Frank Arce, shared that Desiree is an inspiration to everyone, including himself. She is graduating with a 4.0 GPA, and that’s with taking four AP courses. Along with being an exceptional academic student, Desiree excels at working within her community. She has been a part of several community projects including an

to her life as she continues her education, first at Moreno Valley Community College then on to a four year college to obtain her degree in business management. She plans to pursue a career as a regulatory affairs manager. Crystal Chhan is Paloma Valley High School’s Student of the Year. Crystal is one of the most amazing students according to Principal, Mr. Don Williamson, and several of her teachers. Mr. Williamson stated that Crystal is the kind of person who’s tenacious and diligent in her learning and she takes her education seriously as demonstrated by her 4.6 GPA. However she also has a passion to share her knowledge with others; she’ll see someone struggling and will go and help them. She has a desire to bring others up and help them be successful. Crystal attributes her success to those who have influenced her throughout her life starting with her parents for the sacrifices they have made and the strong work ethic they’ve instilled. Her commitment to education stems from watching her parents struggle to start a new life in America. They were refugees from the Cambodian war and have worked hard to build a business and life for their children. She is also very thankful for the teachers at Paloma Valley. They have constantly showed that they cared about her education and have made a huge impact on her life. Crystal wishes to continue her hard work, dedication, and passion in whatever community she is in. She will be attending UC San Diego and will major in biochemistry to become a pathologist. activity called “Walking In Their Shoes”. Students were blindfolded and led by other students on campus. This gave an opportunity for them to experience what it is like to live with a disability. Hearing what they felt going through this exercise helped students empathize with those who live with physical challenges every day. However, Desiree does not allow her disability to interfere with what she wants to accomplish. She has a passion for stories, reading, hearing, and telling. She wishes to share other people’s stories and bring awareness to the strength of the disabled and provide opportunities for them. She plans on doing this by attending UC San Diego and majoring in communications. Perris Lake High School’s Student of the Year is Brittany Maldonado. “Don’t ask me why; ask me how” is the motto at Perris Lake, according to Principal, Mr. Dean Hauser. This was back in February when Brittany was introduced as Perris Lake’s Student of the Month. At that time, Mr. Hauser commented that when a student comes to their campus, the focus is not on what has been and why. Rather, how students can find a way to finish what they started. Brittany is one of those students who had the epiphany about a year ago and made the decision to turn things around for herself. Mr. Hauser stated that Brittany has been a wonderful example of what can happen when a student figures that out. Brittany shared that she had very little motivation and failed continuously at her previous high schools. However, once she started at Perris Lake, with the support of her family, teachers, and counselors, she was able to overcome the challenges she faced and not only earn her credits to graduate, but to graduate early. She accomplished this goal in March. Brittany looks forward to adding value

was not able to attend the Student of the Year event. Viviana was March’s Student of the Month and was described by Principal, Mr. Michael Rhodes as a natural leader. She is always willing to go the extra mile to help lead and inspire the people in and around campus. Her teacher, Ms. Zoccoli stated “Viviana is an amazing young woman who embraces diversity and pursues academic excellence dedicated to making a positive change in the world not because she wants the recognition but because it’s the right thing to do”. At the March breakfast Viviana shared that she has embraced the motto “Improvise, Adapt, Overcome”. She put this into practice last year during one of her dual enrollment classes through Mt. San Jacinto College. She had to have surgery and faced the challenge of possibly not completing her course. Well not only did she complete it, but she received an A. Her dedication and perseverance will help her when she attends Stanford to major in engineering. These students have been honored for their dedication to academics, character, leadership, involvement in school activities and community service or they have shown exceptional drive to excel even in the most challenging circumstances. The communities of Perris and Menifee are proud of the next generation and look forward to sending out their very best in the future. Congratulations to all of the winners and to all of the students honored in 2015-2016 for a job well done. Richard Branson has credited exercise as his number one productivity secret to success. The CEO of Apple, Tim Cook wakes up at 4:30 a.m. to get workout in. I don’t know about you but if Richard Branson or Tim Cook told me that working out would increase my business, I would start squatting right now. How many of you actually work out 3-4 times per week? Would you take your fitness more seriously if it would double your income in your business? If you are still unconvonvinced that working out can catapult your business success then lets go into more detail as to how it can. Boosts Confidence Working out can give you an additional sense of achievement. Imagine there are two people going into a meeting to capture a new client. One of them woke up, worked out and feels good. The other person snoozed 8 times and then rolled out of bed. Which one do you think is more likely to capture that client? *Having small successes in your workouts can enhance your confidence when going after larger goals in business and in life. Helps Build Your Network A lot of barriers break down when you are working out with someone. Imagine going into a sales meeting, you and a prospective client are dressed up, game face on and ready to get down to business. Whether you notice it or not, there is an invisible barrier between you two because you are trying to figure each other out. Now imagine being in your workout clothes, mental guard down

and running on a treadmill next to the same person. Where do you think the most authentic conversation will happen? Just being in the gym can enhance your network and/or strengthen existing relationships. You never know what can happen when you are running on the treadmill; you may be running next to your next client.

Stress Reduction This is a pretty obvious one but when you are stressed your body systems negatively react with each other. Constant negative reactions with the cardiovascular, nervous, respiratory and muscular system can reak havoc on our performance levels. Physical Activity can reduces stress hormones and increase production of endorphins. When we are less stressed we are able to approach our business with a much calmer mindset. Increased Energy There was a study that took sedentary people and gave them a 20-minute daily exercise routine. After a few months the results showed that these subjects had a 90% increase in energy that lasted ALL day. What could you do with 90% more energy? How different would your business productivity look like if you had that kind of a boost? Aside from business, imagine coming home from work and having the energetic capacity to engage with your family. How many of you are guilty of coming home exhausted

Page A 9 and not giving your time and attention to the people that matter the most? Increased Focus Squirrel!!! We live in a world of distractions. Social media beckons you to check it every minute, your phones are constantly beeping with text messages and in the world of business you are always being sidetracked by “fires” that need to be put out. Did you know that on average you lose focus about every 3 minutes? Did you know that on average it takes 23 additional minutes to regain focus on a particular task? The good news is that it only takes only 15 minutes of moving to improve your mental focus.

Increased Creativity Human neuroscience shows that people that engage in regular exercise do better on creativity tests then in their sedentary counterparts. I am not talking about painting a picture of Picasso creativity either. Think

about the creativity involved in overcoming business challenges, new product ideas or creative sales approaches. *A simple trick to get your creativity juices flowing is to take a quick walk before a meeting/sales call. Illness Prevention Who likes being sick? How productive are you when you are sick? I know many of you push through and work even when you are feeling under the weather but realistically how much do you get done? Working out for only 20-30 minutes a day increases circulation and blood flow allowing your immune system to detect illness. This can decrease your sick days and increase your productivity! Improved Relationships and Increased Happiness Working out releases a chemical called dopamine AKA the happy chemical. It also eases anxiety and combats insomnia. How happy would you be if you had happy chemicals swimming in your brain and you had plenty of sleep? Studies also show that happy people perform better. Would you prefer to work with someone that was happy or someone that was sleep deprived and grumpy? Which person do you think would have better odds of having a better business? All it takes is 20-30 minutes of physical activity to reap the benefits. What are you waiting for? Jennifer Sinclair 562-447-0133 Info@weighthappens.com weighthappens

WATERMELON SALAD WITH FETA AND MINT Call me unadventurous, but I had never even heard of a watermelon feta salad before versions of it started popping up on food blogs everywhere. Even then, the very thought of it gave me pause. Watermelon, with salty cheese? Yeah, right. But watermelon sprinkled with salt is how many people enjoy the fruit, so perhaps it isn’t too far of a stretch to consider that it might be good with salty cheese? My curiosity was finally satisfied when I was served such a salad at a dinner. I couldn’t wait to recreate it! It’s wonderfully refreshing and light, and perfect for heat-wave days like we are having now. The amounts given here are truly just guidelines. Feel free to stretch or diminish depending on your taste and the ingredients you are working with. To experiment further, try adding a handful of pitted kalamata olives to the salad! Ingredients 1/2 cup chopped red onion 1/2 cup lime juice (4-6 limes, depending on how big and juicy the limes are) A quarter of a medium sized watermelon, rind removed, black seeds removed (if there are any), chopped into 1-inch cube-ish pieces, about 8 cups 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves, thinly sliced 1/2 cup fresh parsley leaves, chopped

Method Soak the chopped red onion in the lime juice while you are prepping the other ingredients, about 10-15 minutes. Gently combine all ingredients into a large serving bowl. Serve immediately. Salad will get soggy if kept overnight.

IAEA AUTHORITY WITHIN PROBATE In 1987, the California Legislature enacted the Independent Administration of Estates Act (IAEA). IAEA is a collection of statutes granting the personal representative to administer some aspects of the decedent’s estate without court supervision. In order to be granted IAEA powers it must be granted within the will or upon petition. Typically, the personal representative requests IAEA authority art the onset of the probate filing but the Probate code allows for petition of the powers at anytime within the probate. Like most things in probate, interested parties could object to the granting of IAEA powers. The court can grant the personal representative full or limited authority under the IAEA. If the personal representative has limited authority, court supervision is required for the sale, exchange or granting of an option to purchase estate real property. If the personal representative has full authority, court supervision for the sale, exchange or granting of an option is only required if the personal representative or estates attorney is the principal buying, exchange with or optioning the estate property, or, if objection are made to the Notice of Proposed Action. The notice of proposed action is one of the checks and balances (if you will - no pun intended) of IAEA authority. A notice

of proposed action must include: 1) the name and mailing address of the personal representative; 2) the name and telephone number of the person to contact for additional information; 3) reasonably specific description of the action to be taken, including a description of the property and the material terms of the sale, exchange or granting of an option to purchase property, including the price and amount or method of calculating any brokerage commissions; and 4) the date on or after which the proposed action will occur. The Notice of Proposed Action must be mailed or personally delivered to all persons entitled to receive it at least 15 days before the date the proposed action is to take place. Typically, the estate attorney will handle preparation of the Notice and serve such notice on the required parties.

If the court grants only limited authority to the personal representative, they have the power to do all acts allowed under the IAEA rules except the power to: (1) sell real property, (2) exchange real property, (3) grant an option to purchase real property; or (4) borrow money with a loan secured by an encumbrance on real property. Court supervision (in other words a petition must be filed each time the administrator desires to take action) is required under a party acting with limited authority. On the other hand, full authority granted under the IAEA rules allows the personal representative to sell real property, exchange real property, grant an option to purchase real property, or borrow money with a loan secured by real property at his or her discretion. With full authority to administer decedent’s estate, a sale of estate

ARE YOU LISTENING TO YOUR INTUITION? On The Mark With Robbie Motter I have been listening to my intuition for years, and it has become a very powerful tool for my life and business decisions. Have you ever gotten a gut feeling or a hunch about something but talked yourself out of listening to what it was telling you? Then, you end up making the wrong decision. Perhaps you once took a job that your gut told you was the wrong one but you convinced yourself you could make it work and it doesn’t? Or you may have made an expensive purchase even though your intuition was telling you to keep looking and then you do find a better deal later and wish you had listened? Whether you believe it or not, intuition plays a big

part in the decisions we make every day. Or maybe you saw a product or service and thought "Wow this is great and people need to know about this and the next thing you know because you listened got involved with the product or service". Lots of time when things come our way we end up talking ourselves out of the opportunity instead of stepping out of the box and seeing where it takes us. Another friend of mine had an idea for an invention that would be very useful for mothers but she talked herself out of it because she asked friends and family what she should do and they said no it’s a crazy idea and she listened to them and in less than 6 months she saw the item on the market and it became a best seller all over the US. She was sorry

that she did not listen to her intuition. Years ago on September 9th I was scheduled to leave for a consulting job with a client in Boston, I planned to be in Boston for a few days, leave there the morning of September 11th, then meet some New York clients that day, and fly to Washington,DC to meet with other clients. On Sunday September 9th I woke up at my home in California and my gut feeling told me not to make that trip. Since I had learned to trust my instincts many many years ago, I decided to postpone my trip, and although I would not have been on any of the planes involved in the national tragedy, I spared myself from walking into the eye of the storm. Thinking back on my life I could tell you hundreds of stories like that. By listening to my inner voice and following it, I had great opportunities that allowed me to be at the right place at the right time. As a result, I've met the right people that have opened many doors for my career. I also use my intuition when I meet people and by listening to it I immediately know whether they will be a part of my life or not. Most of my Nafe directors are women I met and immediately knew that they would be great as a director, even if at the time they had no idea that is what they were going to do, I asked them, they said YES and they

have all turned out to be great. Whenever I am going to SHOW UP somewhere I listen to my intuition if I should go there and it never steers me wrong. Recently Sheila Caruso and I went to a VIP Mixer for the Largest Mixer in LA to meet all the vendors that will be at the Largest Mixer in Pasadena in July. I had been looking for table runners for Nafe for the July event and every place I looked they were over $100.00 plus and my intuition told me to keep looking and it paid off as at this event I found a company who will be displaying at the event and who makes table runners with logos for $30.00 so again my intuition paid off. Have you ever thought of someone and that moment the phone rings and it’s that person on the other end? That happens to me all the time, I have a friend Janet who lives in Fort Bragg, CA and it seems she always gets a feeling when she needs to call me, sometimes we may have not talked for months but its always the right time. Has that happened to YOU? Many of you have strong intuitions for your business and personal decisions but what happens you know when things take place what to do or what not to do but yet you talk yourself out of it and later you come back and say to yourself “I should have listened to my intuition”. When I was learning how to har-

ness my intuition years ago I read a book Practical Intuition: How to Harness the Power of Your Instinct and Make It Work for You It really helped me a lot and I am sure there are lots of other books out there now, as these books have some practical tips if you are not sure how to make your intuition work for you. What I learned is when I am making a decision to stop and take time to listen, the answer is there all the time, and the more you take time and listen the stronger it becomes. Lots of important people rely on their intuition, people like Oprah, and even Steve Jobs over the years listened to his intuition, so take time and start today and listen to yours, and you may find success will come your way a lot faster. Robbie Motter is a marketing PR Consultant, Certified National Speaker, Writer, Radio Show Host, and the Global Nafe Director. Nafe is the largest global network for women. She also serves on the board of the Temecula Valley Symphony, is a member of the GFWC Menifee/Sun City Women's Club, The Menifee Valley Lions Club, Menifee Valley and Wildomar Chambers.

Biz Buzz WAITING… PATIENTLY WAITING… Since I write the ‘self-employed business’ articles, I have to bring up the ugly word of Waiting. Sitting there right before closing time realizing you have nothing to do is the worst form of idleness for those in business. It’s a happy feeling but at

the same time the feeling you are missing something is often haunting to your mind. If you are in business there is always something to do, ALWAYS! Something needs to be cleaned, something needs to be filed or some email needs to be sent. (or some base less article needs to be written) However, understanding there is a curve in sales and a natural sales cycle allows you to appreciate the down time knowing you will be busy very soon when the cycle swings. When I used to punch a time clock

in college I would stand by the machine and wait for it to click one extra minute. I figured if I added 5 extra minutes a week I would get paid more but when you are self-employed you don’t have a clock. Waiting for another minute at work while not getting paid is one less minute spent with family and having fun. In conclusion, if you are self-employed and you find yourself in a sales rhythm possibly hitting a low trough, leave the office early. Take in the sun shine, smell the flowers and drive a different way home to experience something new. Do not wait for clients or opportunities to come your way, go out and seize them because very soon you won’t have time to patiently wait around and your business will naturally be moving Up One Level. HOW CAN YOU DECLARE YOUR FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE? Next week, we observe the 4th of July with sparklers, picnics and parades. And living in a country that offers so much freedom, we have a lot to celebrate. But on a more personal level, you may still be working toward another type of independence – financial independence. What can you do to speed your progress toward this goal? Here are some ideas to think about: Free yourself from excessive fear. As an investor, it’s not hard to find something to fear. Oil prices, interest rates, political squabbles, even natural disasters – at any given time, each of these factors (and many more) might be blamed for volatility in the financial markets. In response, many people take a “time out” from investing. Don’t let fear hold you back. It takes discipline and some mental toughness to stay invested in all economic environments, but if you’re constantly jumping in and out of the market, you’re almost guaranteed to miss out on the kind of continuity and opportunities you need to move toward your financial freedom. Liberate your investments’ growth potential. Many investors avoid investing too aggressively, wishing to lower their risk level. And that’s certainly not a bad idea. On the other hand, you can easily slip into investing too “safely” by keeping the bulk of your portfolio in investments that protect your principal but offer so little in the way of return that they may not even keep up with inflation. So, try to always maintain a reasonable percentage of growth-oriented vehicles in your portfolio. The exact amount may depend on your age and tolerance for risk, but at virtually every

stage of your life, you need some growth potential. Avoid the tyranny of debt. It’s not easy to stay out of debt. But carrying a heavy debt load is truly a burden – you’re not only concerned about making the payments, but you’re also depriving yourself of dollars that could be used to invest for your future. Try to do everything you can to live within your means and avoid racking up more debt than is necessary. And when you do whittle down your debts, put that “found” money to work. The more you put in your investment portfolio, the more opportunities you have to reach your objectives. Free your thinking about the future. Here’s another roadblock on your journey toward financial independence: short-term thinking. Instead of seeking quick gains (which are notoriously hard to achieve), strive for steady growth. Instead of reacting to the news of the day by making impulsive moves, chart a long-term strategy that’s appropriate for your needs, and stick to it. Instead of focusing on the losses you might see

CONGRESS SHOULD CHANGE THE CONSUMER PRICE INDEX THAT THE SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION USES TO CALCULATE THE ANNUAL COST OF LIVING ADJUSTMENT (COLA) Last October, the Social Security Administration announced that beneficiaries would not receive a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) in 2016. This was the third time in eight years that this has happened. The problem is obvious for those who rely on Social Security, especially for senior citizens whose sole source of income is Social Security. Their cost of living, specifically health care and food, rises every year. As a result, seniors and other beneficiaries facing this situation find themselves falling further behind, making it more difficult, if not impossible to make ends meet. Fortunately, there is a relatively simple solution to

on one month’s investment statement, look back over the progress you’ve made over the last five or 10 years. In short, worry less about today – and plan for tomorrow. It will take a lot of time, effort and patience to ultimately achieve your own

this problem - Congress needs to change the particular Consumer Price Index that the Social Security Administration uses to calculate the annual COLA. Unfortunately, those in Congress have been unwilling to do so. Currently, the Social Security Administration uses a price index called the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners (CPI-W) to determine the COLA. CPI-W measures costs that a person living in an urban setting faces. It does not, however, take into account the living expenses particular to senior citizens, namely health care costs. Without considering these costs, CPI-W does not provide a true picture as to the appropriate COLA that should be implemented for senior citizens. To remedy this issue, Congress should adopt a CPI called Consumer Price Index-Elderly or CPI-E for calculating a COLA. CPI-E is a more realistic and fair method for determining Social Security benefits. It is generally accepted that spending patterns between the elderly and the general population differ greatly, especially in the health care category. With health care costs increasing at a much greater rate than the general rate of inflation, Seniors 65 and older spend more than double, and those over 75 spend almost triple on health care versus the younger population. The current price index (CPI-W) does not take these critical differences in cost of living into consideration. Without changing the index, senior citizens are taking a pay cut each year as increases do not keep up with living expenses. This increases poverty among seniors nationwide. Social Security is designed to mitigate poverty in our

TECH TALK

Hello, my name is Yanik Gozlan from The Computer Repair Experts and I write “Tech Talk”. My goal is to give tips and information on the latest gadgets or common issues you may have with your technology. I have been helping people solve their technology problems since 2002. With multiple certifications and over 10 years of experience in this industry, I will try to educate and share common interests that most of the surrounding areas are talking about.

HOW TO SPOT AND AVOID INSTALLING POTENTIALLY UNWANTED PROGRAMS How to avoid PUPs and other unwanted programs slowing down your PC PUPs: I'm afraid to say we're not talking about the cuddly, loveable little dogs, but rather the kind that will not so adorably clog up your laptop or PC and slow it right down. PUPs, short for potentially unwanted programs,

and advertising software (more commonly known as adware) are removed on a day-to-day basis from suspect laptops and home PCs. Although these days we’re seeing more and more internet-savvy people install antivirus software to help protect their machines, PUPs and adware can slyly avoid detection – so you won’t even realise your PC has been targeted. But never fear: we have a few simple steps to help arm your home system against rogue programs and stop example, I remember very it slowing down. clearly a conversation I had with my wife over the dinDON'T CLICK ANY OLD ner table about this probLINK lem. She wanted to install PUP - 1 To give a real life a specific program but

didn't go to an appropriate website to download – and wondered afterwards why a Yahoo toolbar appeared in his web browser. After an intense Q&A session, I explained that by going to an unapproved vendor, the software could have been wrapped up with all these add-ons and in-built adware. In other words, although the original program will be there, it’ll come with added unwanted extras. To avoid this, only download software from legitimate, official websites and avoid clicking on any suspicious-looking links. OK MAY NOT BE OK! PUP - 2 Clicking ‘OK’ is often a bit like reading Ts&Cs: although we know we should pay them proper attention, it’s often easier just to accept them without much thought when we’re busy or in a rush. Some original programs can come with add-ons built into them already, but the difference is that you can choose whether to install them or not. With everything from toolbars to changing your search browser, you should take the time to read every page carefully

to make sure you’re not agreeing to anything you don't want or need. Those extra five minutes could help you avoid a few hours of inconvenient meddling! UNCHECK, UNCHECK & UNCHECK After slowing down and carefully reading what’s on the pages you’re clicking through, you may come across some small boxes with ticks in already. If they’re asking permission to install add-ons or other adware, you’ll want to uncheck these. By unchecking them you are reducing the risk of slowing your computer down and improving your PC security for the future. So there you have it: a simple guide on how to avoid any unwanted intruders on your laptop or PC. If your computer is running a bit slow and you think it's due to PUPs or adware, then you could benefit from one of our Laptop & PC Health Check services. Just give us a call and let one of us work their magic. For more Local News visit us at: www.menifeebuzz.com

GIOVANNI'S RESTAURANT RECEIVES AN AWARD FORM THE AMERICAN LEGION PERRIS POST 595. "The American Legion appreciates local small businesses and their contributions to our programs. This plaque was presented on May 28, 2016 as a small token of our appreciation for Giovanni's Restaurant. The generous opportunity prizes Giovanni's has assisted us with over the past years have been a tremendous help. As Post Commander of a non-profit Veterans Organization I can tell you our team works hard to bring in funding for our programs. Businesses like Giovanni's make it easier for us to get our volunteer work done. It's local small businesses like theirs who support our Veterans that we all need to frequent and support. They show their support for Veterans everyday, let's thank them for all they do by supporting their fantastic restaurant." Said by, James Bieger, American Legion Perris Post 595 Commander (USMC).

Local 5 EASY MAINTENANCE TIPS TO HELP KEEP YOUR CAR RUNNING LONGER Content provided courtesy of USAA. Most days, our cars take us smoothly from here to there ... and back again. So, not surprisingly, we often take their reliability for granted. But even the trustiest of vehicles still relies on you to complete five basic maintenance steps for better survival in the long run. You should likely have lower maintenance and repair costs and a safer drive if you regularly follow these essential tips: 1. UNDERSTAND THE SUGGESTED MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE Every new car comes with an official manual loaded with recommendations for regular maintenance. The manufacturer can't compel you to follow them, but it would be smart if you did. Among other maintenance tips, the manual tells you how to:  Change the oil and how often to do so.  Make sure your fluids are the right color and at the right level.  Know the right grade of fuel to use for your vehicle. Regular unleaded or premium, diesel or ethanol? It matters. 2. MAINTAIN YOUR TIRES Your auto manual suggests how often a mechanic should rotate your tires. Check your tires regularly to ensure they're properly inflated and that the

tread is still at a safe level. This makes for smooth rides, better gas mileage and lower risk of a blowout. 3. LISTEN TO YOUR CAR You probably don't speak "dog," but if you have one, you learn to read the signals that your pup is hungry or needs to go outside. You can understand your car the same way. Listen for squealing or grinding noises that mean your brakes need to be checked. Is your steering wheel shaking more than usual on smooth roads? That's an indicator of potential trouble ahead. Don't ignore vehicle sights and sounds that are inconsistent from one day to the next. Address them as they change. If something on the car feels wrong, it probably is. 4. PRACTICE GOOD DRIVING HABITS Be kind to your car. Don't try to make it do zero to 60 in three seconds. Slow starts cause less strain on the engine. Change gears smoothly as you accelerate. And don't expect it to stop on a dime either. That damages the brakes. 5. KEEP YOUR CAR CLEAN INSIDE AND OUT Your auto's exterior and undercarriage attract road debris such as hot tar, dirt and bugs in the summer and salt in the winter. Over time, those elements can give the components of your vehicle — including motor parts and external body structure — a beating. As for the inside, well, you'll enjoy your car more and extend its resale value if you keep it tidy.

Before the award ceremony began, the Menifee Chamber of Commerce recognized the hard work of Board Director, Andrew Vallejos , as well as

to accept her award that she says “is a tremendous honor and blessing” and that she’s delighted to continue to serve the city of Menifee. The next award was Organization/ Association of the Year which was given to the Menifee Valley Community Cupboard. There were 3 awards in the business category which were small, medium, and large business of the year. The Small business of the Year award went to the Menifee Buzz which has

Owner of Provecho Grill, Rosie O’Conner, was in Oaxaca, Mexico trying new dishes and beverages for her restaurant and was not able to attend the ceremony but her family accepted the prestigious award on her behalf. After the ceremony, I had the honor of speaking to California Senator, Mike Morrell, who was a speaker and guest at the event. I asked

I asked Vicki, what does one have to do to become Citizen of the Year? She said “well I am truly blessed to work with such amazing people in the Chamber of Commerce that it’s very easy and fun to be so active in the community.” I also asked Vicki what she loves about Menifee and

the rest of officers for their accomplishments and hard work. When the awards ceremony began, Executive Director of the Menifee Chamber, Michelle Runnells, took the mic and handed out the first award of the night-Ambassador of the Year- to Phil Liso who Michelle says is someone that she can always count on when something needs to be done. Senator Morrell why he feels that small business is important to the community and he said that, “Small business helps build the community and benefits other small businesses in the area. Small businesses are very involved with what is going on locally and that is important for a community.” Senator Morrell also touched base on why he thinks a chamber of commerce in a community is important, he said “Chambers of Commerce are very valuable to small business growth and create a

she said “That’s easy! All the amazing growth we’ve experienced this last year. Menifee is booming.” The Business Ceremony was a success and the growth that Menifee experienced could not be possible without the dedicated members of the Chamber of Commerce and it’s exciting to see what’s next for the Chamber and the city of Menifee in the coming year.

You hope to make the right decisions while not spending so much money in the process. However, there comes a time when marketing has to be revisited to make sure you’re getting the most out of your time and money. Many small businesses market their business by using the wrong tactics. Time and money spent should be analyzed fully before considering what is in the budget and what will yield the best results. Print ads, writing articles, and networking do well with marketing for new clients, however, what other marketing efforts can produce results?

Following are efforts that hurt marketing efforts: 1. Lack of written plans Writing one will allow you to go back and see what has been accomplished and what will be done in the future. City MENIFEE EXPERIENCES SALES TAX GAIN DURING FOURTH QUARTER FOR 2015 Menifee’s fourth quarter sales tax revenues outpaced the prior year’s results, a key indicator of a continued strong and expanding economy. The city’s sales tax revenues from October, November and December 2015 climbed 12.9 percent, excluding aberrations, and 20.7 percent overall, when compared with the same quarter one year prior. “This substantial growth is due to more businesses and restaurants opening and continued construction in the city,” said Interim Development Director Jeff Wyman.” A newer city like Menifee depends on sales tax revenues to provide basic city services such as public safety, traffic relief and road improvements. Fourth quarter sales

Menifee Buzz—www.menifeebuzz.com tax revenues are on target with expected sales tax revenue projections. The city has forecasted a $20M gap in general fund revenue over the next five years, largely due to annual rising public safety costs. The $44.5M annual loss of Vehicle License Fees (VLF) since 2011, continues to burden the city’s ability to provide increased public safety personnel. While the sales tax revenue report is substantially good news for the city, it will not resolve the annual increase in public safety costs, which currently makes up 66% of the general fund budget, or replace the loss of VLF revenue. Overall, consumer goods category contributed to 35 percent of the city’s sales tax revenues, and continues to outpace previous years’ results. A large increase in building and construction-related spending, along with an uptick in restaurant revenues, contributed to the double-digit sales tax revenue increase for Q4, 2015. Although continued lower fuel prices caused a slight dip in revenues from the fuel and services stations category, the sales tax revenue increases from the other six categories compensated for the loss. When compared with surrounding cities, the region and Southern California, Menifee’s sales tax revenue categorically outpaced the region. Menifee reported increases nearly four times greater than Riverside County’s 2.9 percent increase and five-and-a-half times Southern California’s 2.2 percent increase.

Local STATE OF THE CITY: MENIFEE IS MAKING ITS MARK - WITH PROGRESS, PARTNERSHIP, AND POSTERITY By: Michelle Rivas On Thursday June 16th 2016, Menifee Mayor Scott Mann, the Menifee city council, and community leaders gathered at Menifee Lake Country Club to not only celebrate all the success and progress the city of Menifee has made but also to discuss plans for the upcoming year. At the State of the City meeting, Mayor Scott touched base on all the new developments that Menifee is working on including Sun City’s new fire station, Menifee’s Town Center (which is opening this summer), the construction of

the Scott Road interchange, The Shoppes at the Lake center which will include a Stater Bros and Starbucks, and the new stores like Forever 21 and Home Goods that are opening at the Countryside Market place. With so many new impressive developments and projects, Menifee is seeing a lot of economic and population growth but there are still issues that need to be resolved- one being the $4.2 million in vehicle license fee revenue that the city is losing because of a Legislation created by Jerry Brown in 2011. Mayor Scott encouraged everyone in the room to write the Governor about this unfair law that could make the city’s budget unsustainable overtime and create a deficit for the city. After Mayor Scott’s address, the audience was a treated to a video of council members Greg August, Matt Liesemeyer, John Denver, and Lesa Sobek discussing in detail the progress being made within the 4 districts of Menifee. The first district is represented by Councilman, Greg August, who discusses the new fire station which is in partnership with CalFire, which is being built by Cherry Hills and will be finished by next summer. Greg then discusses the 1960s Cherry Hills plaza locations such as some of the successful small businesses like Provecho Grill and Merna’s Café that are very popular with the locals. August also delves into the new infrastructure that is on its way to being finished.

Page B 9

Councilman, Matt Liesemeyer is the representative for District 2 and discusses the progress being made including the grand opening of Spirit Park, the development of Central Park in Town Center, the opening of Town Center Marketplace which will take place in June and July, as well as the development of the Scott Rd interchange, the completion of Holland & Bradley Rd, and the new project of Haun Rd to Murrieta that is expected to start this summer. Councilwoman Lesa Sobek, is the representative for District 3, which is located east of Menifee, and she discusses the completion of the Newport road interchange project, the Menifee Merge, the conception of Shoppes at the Lake which will include

a new Stater Bros. and Starbucks, and the Outstanding Citizen Award program. Lastly, John Denver discussed details about District 4 including the Line A project, the completion of the Safe Route to School project, the completion of the Missing Link Project which was the connection of Menifee and Palomar roads to Case Road, and the Military Banner Program. There are more specific details on all the districts and project developments in the video so for that, click the video link down below. I also had the pleasure of interviewing Mayor Scott about the up-and-coming developments and what’s next for the city of Menifee. I first asked Mayor Scott about what development he’s most excited to see open this summer and he said “I’m excited about all of them but I can’t wait for the Town Center project which includes the movie theater, 4 new restaurants, a bowling alley, I really can’t wait for that to come in.” I also asked what developments he would like to see happen in the near future and his response was “many more parks, extreme sporting events, more facilities for recreational, outdoor activities, stuff like that.” Lastly, I asked Mayor Scott what he thinks makes Menifee stand out and shine amongst the other cities and he had the perfect answer, he said “Well just like real estate, it’s all about location, location, location! Were an hour away from all the hot spots like the beach, the mountains, Los Angeles, San Diego, and were on a major freeway. So it works out perfectly” Progress, Posterity, and Partnership was the anthem for the State of the city meeting is definitely living up to that and is on its way to becoming one the most prosperous cities in Southern California.
