Hometown Hero By Melanie Gozlan

Kane Van Slyke is just a normal boy who attends Ridgemoor Elementary School in Menifee, loves Cub Scouts, and resides with his grandmother Lorna-Lei Love, nicknamed by many as "Grandma Love". In August of 2013 as he was set to enter into 2nd grade, news came that he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. This bone cancer commonly affects children and teens. At the tender age of 8, this sweet boy had to have his leg amputated in an effort to destroy the cancer that had invaded his body. In April of this year, after many treatments, procedures, testing, and surgery, Kane is now cancer free! A true inspiration to fellow classmates, teachers, and staff, he is now in 3rd grade. Andrew Brantley and Hayden are among some of his closest friends at Ridgemoor Elementary. They have taken him under their wing and protected him, often telling other students "He had Cancer,

INSIDE The “Trashy” Element Of Politics Now that the election period is over and has run its course, we are left with several hundred election signs. Slowly some have been removed, presumably by the City Code Enforcement. Others have succumbed to the weather and have blown away and the others remain as a stark reminder that in elections, as in life, there are winners and losers. Page B1

With the holiday season upon us, a popular question buzzing around is what the optimal way to lose weight and improve ones fitness is.

but he's fine so don't bug him." Andrew has even shared his love of the San Francisco 49ers with Kane. With Andrew playing football with Murrieta Broncos, his mom Misty thought what a better way to support Kane than by wearing yellow cancer ribbons on their helmets with his name on it. So an event was organized by her, staff, coaches, parents, and families that were involved with the Bronco's team. There was no lack of support and praise given to little Kane as he

was flooded with love and emotion from all involved that day. He was brought onto the field as an honorary captain, presented with his own jersey and a football that the whole team had signed. He was taken to the sidelines where he was able to swap "high fives" with each player and watched the boys hold hands as they went onto the field for the coin toss. Even the "water boy" made sure he was hydrated and taken care of throughout the game. Touched and fighting back the tears, Grandma Love was on hand to witness the gestures from everyone to make Kane feel special. He was part of their team. His love for football has grown and he hopes one day to be able to play. Those who know him are inspired and in awe of this little guys faithfulness and zest for life. Now thriving and living "cancer-free" we wish Kane and Grandma Love all the best on his continued journey throughout life.

Can you find a farmer at a Farmers Market? New law will help you play spot the “farmer” By Jeremiah Raxter, How can you tell if someone is a “farmer” at a farmers market? Venders that sell fruit, nuts, and vegetables are not necessarily the individuals that grow the items they sell. Some produce venders are merely distributors that purchase the food from the very place the retailers do. We all love fresh vegetables and fruit and who doesn’t want to support a local farmer and a new law enacted by Gov. Brown will support local farmers and protect the credibility of farmers markets. California Gov. Jerry Brown signed AB 1871, which for the first time provides what supporters say is adequate funding to ensure that

growers at certified farmers markets produce what they sell. Ben Feldman, chair of the California Alliance of Farmers' Markets stated “This is the single-most significant change to farmers market laws since they were established in 1977.” The public and venders should expect to see more inspectors at farmers markets to ensure compliance. An important provision of the bill, vendors will no longer be allowed to sell “fresh whole fruits, nuts, vegetables and flowers” in adjacent non-agricultural sections of market.

Career Dog Groomer Turned Successful Writer By Shirley Wible, Literary Arts Chair, Arts Council Menifee

Judy Howard had been a dog groomer since she was 11 years old. She loved it and the pups loved her back… but after retiring from ownership of the local Canine Beauty Salon on Bradley Road in Menifee, she was ready for something new, challenging and fun. Howard took a creative writing class in Hemet through the Mt. San Jacinto College, and after a 10 minute writing exercise about the color red, she was hooked. “Words just kept coming out – I couldn’t stop the flow” says Howard, “I continued the class because I discovered I liked it and it seemed I had a natural talent for writing”. Three books later with two more in the making, Judy Howard knows who she is and what she wants to do for the rest of her life – “I am a writer… I need to write!”. The crazy thing is she never ever thought about writing before she took the creative writing class and certainly never thought that she would write a book. All her years living through adversities she felt as if she had something to express “and now I have found the outlet” Howard said gratefully. This December Judy will be honored as the Arts Council Menifee’s “Artist of the Month”. She has been chosen for her body of work, support of the organization and her involvement with the local community.

Born and raised in Springfield Illinois Judy moved to southern California in the early 1970’s and has lived in the area ever since. Her first book “Coast to Coast With a Cat and a Ghost” is a memoir centered around a trip she took in her RV across the country. She had two companions traveling with her – her cat and a ghost who was a stuffed full-sized figure who rode shotgun beside her and took on the characteristics and attributes of her late husband. Judy kids that he was to be a protection for a single woman traveling alone but he often gave her driving advice and chided her when she missed a turn or got a little lost. “This was supposed to be a fun travelogue” she said “but I discovered through the writing that I was working out many personal issues about living with an abusive husband”. Her second book, “Going Home with a Cat and a Ghost”, became a story with many of the same characters from the first book who were projected into a fictional future. This one focused on a school reunion and a past romance. “This one was fun!” said Howard. The third book, “Masada’s Marine”, takes on a much more serious subject – PTS symptoms and the miraculous healings of service dogs. Judy remarked that the re-

search for this book was intense and very difficult – finding out information concerning veterans and their difficulties after returning home was emotional and disturbing. More than anything she wanted to get the facts right and represent the situation truthfully. For her this was a labor of love. Howard is now working on a sequel to her third book and, for relief, a book with the working title “Sportster’s Adventures” about a cat who escapes from a road trip into the wild only to decide to head for home and all that happens to him along the way. Howard has been an Arts Council Menifee patron for about 3 years. She is a member of Sisters

In Crime and the Inland Empire’s California Writers Club. She is in the top 10 % of Amazon’s Author Ranking. Howard presents workshops and seminars at libraries, schools, RV rallies, and senior centers. She would like to do the same at Veteran’s Centers “because writing is healing” as she, herself, has discovered. Howard occasionally will do inhome dog grooming as she still loves it and “it’s a big part of my life”. Can you find a farmer at a Farmers Market? New law will help you play spot the “farmer” By Jeremiah Raxter,

Farmers will be required to post conspicuous signs with the name and location of their farm, which will allow shoppers to identify the legitimate farmers. The sign must also state “We grow what we sell,” a declaration that may appear repetitive (vendors in agricultural sections already are required to grow what they sell but as we all know this historically has not been the case) but this makes the law clearer and easier for the inspectors to define a clearcut violation. The bill creates a new misdemeanor, making false statements about the grower, growing area or growing practices of agricultural products punishable by a fine of up to $2,500 and imprisonment of up to six months. As you visit your favorite certified farmers’ market look for the new signs identifying the farm

where your selections were grown and skip the venders who are unable to post where the items were grown. We need to support our local farmers and the best way to support them is to purchase local grown food and this new law is one of the few that support local farmers in a real way. Remember, without farmers there is no food and the best farmers in opinion are the local ones.

Never, Never, Never Give Up Robbie Motter- Staff Writer

Life is full of surprises some good and some not so good, but when we are faced with these issues we need to know that tomorrow is another day and that we should never, never, never give up. Many of you know Armand Blais, a Menifee Resident, who is also known as the man with the Red Trombone! I have seen him play that trombone at several events and he does a great job. At the age of 10 Armand knew what he wanted to do and that was to lead his own Big Band. He has been doing it successfully for the past 32 years. Armand totally knows what never give up means. After going through a six way bypass on March 5, 2005 at Hoag Hospital in Orange County where he used to live, he spent 30 days in the hospital. He met his lovely Evelyn (Eve) and they moved to Menifee, per the suggestion of his doctors. He loved living on his boat in Huntington Harbor, and after the surgery, it was too damp to continue living on the water. Armand started his Orchestra/ Big Band in the early 1980’s in Orange County which was a 16 piece 1940’s authentic dance band. He and his band are well known throughout Orange and Los Angeles Counties, He performed at the Orange County Fair for several years, Cattleman’s Wharf, The Phoenix , Diamond and Friar’s Clubs, the Beverly Wilshire as well as many others. The band has been to the Riverside Casino in Laughlin and all the way to the Guam Hilton Hotel for New Year’s Eve. Armand was born and raised in Manchester, New Hampshire, and when he was a sophomore in high school he and his family moved to Goffstown, New Hampshire for a few years. At the end of his junior year in high school

his family packed up again and headed west to California where they settled in Garden Grove. Part of Armand’s dream for his future was to have his Big Band perform at Disneyland, and he pursued trying to make that happen for 32 years, again never giving up. He defeated death again with another recent heart surgery on October 22nd this year. In August when he went back to Hoag Hospital he was told that only one artery was open and 60% of another. The doctors told him there was nothing they could do because he had arterial degeneration and it was too risky to put stints in and for him to just go home and take his medication and they wished him good luck. He decided that he was not going to take that lying down and went for a second opinion. Menifee has a wonderful doctor who has done many heart surgeries and Armand found him, his name is Dr. Bhoodey Twari, who also did heart Surgery on my father years ago. After Dr.Twari looked at Armand’s cardio films from Hoag Hospital he referred him to Dr Paul Tierstein at Scripps Green Hospital in La Jolla, CA. Dr Tierstein told Armand and his wife they do high risk stents every day. Once a year at the heart surgeons convention at Scripps Green Hospital they invite 12 of the best cardio surgeons in the world to learn and witness how Dr. Tierstein does these high risk cases. This was great news for Armand; they scheduled him for surgery on October 22nd this year, and it was video recorded live for future educational schools. Armand and his Big Band have finally been hired by Disneyland and will be scheduled at Downtown Disney beginning at the beginning of 2015. After he gets much stronger they will put him in the Carnation Plaza in the park! Again, he never gave up and his dream is finally going to happen which was to have his band play

at Disneyland! Upon hearing this news, Armand rushed his band into Adamos Recording Studio on October 1st this year before his surgery to record his first Christmas Album. It will be released by Thanksgiving and is called Holiday Favorites with the Armand Blais Big Band. Armand has made many friends with the Historic Hemet Theatre and will be doing regular scheduled concerts come the first of the year as well as producing the first annual three day Swing Dance Camp in early April 2015. Armand’s dreams are continually coming true because of his persistence. He thanks God for Grace and allowing him to live on and continue sharing his talents and entertaining people everywhere. Check out his website at www.armandblaisorchestra. com. His Christmas album would make a great Holiday gift; contact armandblaisorchestra@hotmail.

com to place your order, the cost is $15.00 plus $2.00 for shipping and handling. Armand had his albums available at the City Christmas Tree Lighting celebration on December 5th at the Menifee Town Center. Armand is also grateful to all his musician friends who have been with him for years and to his Children Christopher and his wife Melinda, Vickie and his grandson Christopher, his son Pierre, Anna, Mark, his wife Irma and Ira and most of all to his wife Eve for being there for him. Armand also has a big thank you to the Menifee Valley Chamber friends and everyone that knows him for all their thoughts and prayers. He is so excited about his upcoming adventures at Disney which was his dream so many years ago. He is now venturing on a new beginning and like he says “NEVER, NEVER, NEVER give up!".

‘HipHop Grampop’ shares keys to a long and happy life in unbeatable rap song

By Laura Rathbun Life Coach Howard Tangler of Sun City has become known this past year as the “HipHop Grampop” after writing a rap song about how to live a long and happy life. His rapping can be viewed on YouTube and he’s under consideration to be a guest on “The Steve Harvey Show.” Tangler, an 84-year-old great-grandfather, retired aeronautical engineer and former Dale Carnegie trainer, wrote and performed the rap song for his and his wife Betty’s 60th wedding anniversary earlier this year. “I wanted to do something different at the celebration of our 60th wedding anniversary,” he said. “I wanted it to be fun and inspirational, so as I was putting down my thoughts it started to sound like a rap. It didn’t take long to create it, and I have been editing it and playing with it ever since.” Everyone enjoyed the three-minute rap song at the anniversary celebration and Tangler has performed it at the Sun City Civic Association’s Players and Friendship clubs. As a life coach, Tangler has helped people lead happier, healthier and more productive lives for over 50 years and he’s still at it. “I recently helped two people get out of depression and I helped one couple save their marriage after they thought divorce was their only option,” he said. Tangler attributes his happy and healthy life to positive thinking every day and has a “2 for 21” system with five steps to help people improve their lives. Those steps are: Live according to this idea: It doesn’t matter what happened. What matters is what you think about what happened. That makes the differ-

Excerpts from the HipHop Grampop’s rap song: Now here’s the key to a life of success, A lifetime of joy, filled with happiness. Your Mind’s a computer. It’s programmed every day. By what you think, And what you say. You ARE what you think about Every day that you live. So, starting right now think POSITIVE!

ence. Start thinking in a new way. To start thinking: “I want to change. I can change. I believe in change.” Believe you will succeed in changing. Listen to what you’re saying because the mind is a computer and it’s programmed every day by what you think and what you say. So you need to pay attention to what you say. Repeat daily positive affirmations many times during the day. Apply your affirmation correctly: first has to be personal – something you believe. Second, it has to be positive: “I’m getting better all the time at remembering names” not “I’m going to stop forgetting names.” Third is it’s got to be present tense – it can’t be “Someday I’ll be good at this.” It has to apply immediately. It has to be personal, present tense and positive. It takes 21 days of daily repeated

exercise, repeating specific positive statements to yourself to change your attitude. “Anybody can do this!” Tangler exclaimed. “Anybody can. It’s just a matter of will they because it does take some dedication.” Tangler said he’s living proof of how his system brings happiness and health. “My wife, Betty, and I have been married 60 years and we’re happy every moment. A lot of that is because of who we are and what we think,” he said. “I have a daily affirmation that I use: I’m happy, because the time to be happy is every moment. You can’t decide now to be happy in the past, and you shouldn’t wait to be happy in the future. The time to be happy is right now! And, the second thing is I’m grateful for my past. I can’t change my past, but who I am today is because of my past, so I’m grateful for everything that happened in the past that brought me to today.” Tangler had many illnesses as a child, but amazingly hasn’t been sick for the past 48 years. “I had colds and flu every year. I got mumps, measles and chicken pox. I had a serious mastoid operation when I was 5 and an appendectomy at 12,” he said. “That pattern continued into adult life till I was 36 when I came down with a particularly bad case of the flu and was bed-ridden for three days. At that time, I decided that I didn’t want to have any more illnesses like that, and I changed my thinking.” When Tangler was a teenager, his parents took a course in positive thinking, which he initially dismissed, but then decided to try. The positive thinking ultimately changed his life. “I came up with an affirmation that says: ‘I have total immunity to all harmful germs, viruses, diseases and bacteria.’ I repeated that affirmation 50 times each morning, noon and night until I became a new habit of thinking. I am now 84 years old, and I have not had an illness of any kind for over 48 years.” After his last annual physical in September, Tangler’s doctor said all his test results were normal. “I take no medications and I have no aches or pains in any joints. Betty got the same result,” he said. Tangler stays in good shape physically and mentally with regular exercise and social activities. He bike rides three times a week and bowls once a week in a league. He’s also active in his church and some social clubs. “Train your mind to think positive, and you will live a healthy and happy life,” he said. Tangler can be contacted at HipHopGrampop.com or tangler@earthlink.net. His rap song can be viewed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdBhhwed9U4.

The “Trashy” Element Of Politics

By Jeremiah Raxter

Now that the election period is over and has run its course, we are left with several hundred election signs. Slowly some have been removed, presumably by the City Code Enforcement. Others have succumbed to the weather and have blown away and the others remain as a stark reminder that in elections, as in life, there are winners and losers. Forgetting each politician and their promises, ideals and campaigns, what we see for months before the elections are their catchy signs of various sizes plastered on every flat surface. Only once in all my time participating in elections as either a voter or observer did a politician promise to remove their signs after the election. This was the first time a politician was able to prove so quickly that at least one campaign promise was kept. This was a local school district election. If a school board member can remove their signs within 48 hours of the election…I ponder why a congressman/congresswoman or city official cannot.

As of the date I sat down to write this article, there remain several dozen or more campaigns signs from numerous city and state officials. Conceivably, the hopefuls that lost the election would not be in any rush to remove their signs. However, if I was ever to run for elected office and lost, I would rush to remove my signs so the whole endeavor would be put behind me…but I guess that is just

me. The winners on the other hand, should be rushing to remove their signs and beautify their area they have been elected to serve. Politics is a nasty business, but it shouldn’t be a trashy business, at least in the literal sense. In the future, any politician who vows (and actually does it would be nice also) to remove their signs after the election will gain my attention. I would

How Routine Checkups Can Help Prevent Flooding When we think of leaks occurring in our homes the first thing we think of are pipe bursts or slab leaks. However, there is more than one way to get a leak in your home. Even if your pipes are not leaking, the chances of your house flooding due to the failure of a supply line or fixture will always be looming near by. Some of these issues are sudden and accidental, but some issues will have signs that they are about to fail. For starters, it is always a good idea to routinely check the flex lines and angle stops to your sinks. When these flex lines burst it is like running your faucet non stop, except all the water is pouring into your cabinets. That is why it is also a good idea to check your angle stops and make sure that they can still shut off the water to your flex line and faucet. A flex line that is about to fail simply looks brittle or old and if it looks questionable than it is probably time to replace them. Angle stops have a chance of blowing as well, but these parts can be routinely inspected by testing if they still shut off or not. Once they stop working, the first sign that it’s beginning to fail arises. Other areas that people seem to forget about are the supply lines to your dishwasher and refrigerator. These lines are normally hidden and it is easy to keep them out of sight and out of mind, but that is also the reason why it’s important to check on them. When these lines leak they are normally not found until it is too late and your cabinets are saturated or covered in mold. So we recommend to occasionally inspect under your sink, dishwasher, and behind the refrigerator. We have learned that plastic or copper supply lines are the first to fail due to kinking, but a steel braided line tends to be more durable and has a longer life span. Doing these inspections is a lot easier than you would imagine and they could save you tons of money on repairing damages. The bursting of flex line, angle stops, water heater supply

lines, and shut off valves can be caused due to age and normal wear and tear, but the chances of having an issue occur increases drastically when you have high water pressure coming into you home. All the supply lines and fixtures in your home are designed for normal water pressure of 50 psi to 65 psi and allowing high water pressure to your home is the equivalent to having too much air in your car tires. The pressure to your home can be easily checked by a small pressure gauge that you can place on your hose and this gauge can be purchased fairly cheap from Home Depot, Lowes, or any of your local hardware stores. Also, if your pressure is higher than 65 psi then all you have to do is replace (or install) the pressure regulator at your home and you’ll be set for another 7 to 10 years. When you are routinely checking your flex lines and pressure, also make sure that all your main water shut offs to the entire home are functioning as well. If an emergency ever occurs then you will want a plan B to shut your water off if the angle stops are no longer functioning. If you do not feel comfortable or are unsure if you are inspecting your lines, fixtures, or pressure properly than please feel free to call Menifee Plumbing at 1 (888) 333-5325 for an inspection or simply to ask us for advice.

further admire any politician that actually removes their signs themselves. Moreover, any politician who is unable to leave the city hall or congress and therefore has no idea where their signs remain as a blight should feel free to contact any constituent and I am sure they will be happy to assist in pointing out the sign so they can be removed only to be returned at the next election period. As K.J. Parker said “In politics, it’s what isn’t said that matters.” Actions speak louder and resonate louder than any speech will and the simple act of cleaning up their signs will speak volumes. Otherwise, I suppose the tax payers can continue to allow the code enforcement officers to remove them in between all their other duties.

TECH TALK

Page B 3

Hello, my name is Yanik Gozlan from Xtreme Business Solutions and I write “Tech Talk”. My goal is to give tips and information on the latest gadgets or common issues you may have with your technology. I have been helping people solve their technology problems since 2002. With multiple certifications and over 10 years of experience in this industry, I will try to educate and share common interests that most of the surrounding areas are talking about.

How to keep your sexy selfies (and other sensitive files) safe in the cloud As some starlets found out the hard way, just because you upload private files to the cloud it doesn’t mean they’re safe. Computer systems can (and will) be broken into, and that cool, convenient cloud can quickly become the storm that rains on your parade. Everyone has sensitive files they’d like to keep private: medical records, love letters, tax documents, and, yes, maybe even the occasional image of you or a loved one au naturale. The problem is, once you upload files to the cloud, you give up some control over who can see them. But there are some steps you can take to keep your most private data safe from prying eyes. All it requires a little diligence and time.

Check your phone’s settings If you have cloud apps installed on your phone, there’s a good chance they are automatically uploading every photo you take to the cloud. Dropbox, Google+, and iCloud do this by default. That sounds scary, but it’s actually meant to be a convenience: If your phone gets wiped, destroyed, or stolen, you still have the photos online. But this means you really have to think before you take each shot. If the subject matter of your images isn’t something you'd share, open your app settings, look for automatic photo upload, and toggle it off. And remember deleting an image from your phone doesn’t necessarily mean it’s gone from the cloud, too. We had some of the my staff test various services, and Google+ kept a photo in the cloud even after it was deleted from the phone’s gallery. If you want that photo to be gone for good, be sure to log into the cloud service and check manually. As a wise Marine sergeant once said to me: Inspect, don’t expect. And while you’re at it, encrypt your phone's storage so that if it's stolen, the data stored on it stays private. Encrypt your sensitive files Sure, you could keep all your files locally, but sometimes you have to share them or otherwise make them available online. Encryption offers the best protection when you do. There are many ways to encrypt files nowadays, but I’ve got one method you should be aware of. Each has its own features, uses, and limitations.

Easy mode: 7-Zip 7-Zip is a quick-and-dirty way to encrypt your files in an archive. The 7z format supports AES 256-bit encryption, which is plenty strong for most purposes. The files in the archive are encrypted using a

passphrase. For Windows, download the 7-Zip software from the project’s website. The installation should only take a few seconds. Once installed, Windows’ File Explorer (Windows Explorer for Windows 7 users) will have a 7-Zip submenu added to the context menu.

7-zip add archive 7-Zip can encrypt both the files in the archive and the filenames. Be sure to use the 7z format for compatibility across devices. To encrypt one or more files, select them, right click and select 7-Zip > Add to archive… In the dialog that opens, give the archive a name and enter a passphrase to encrypt it. You can opt to encrypt the filenames as well if you fear they might reveal the file contents. When you’re done, click OK and 7-Zip will create and encrypt the archive. All you have to do is put the archive in the cloud or in an email.

7 zip decrypt When you try to open an encrypted archive, 7-Zip will prompt you for the password. If you need to share a password with someone else, you must make sure the sharing method is secure as well. (And no, a private Facebook message is not secure.) Use an encrypted email or write it down on a scrap of paper instead. If that’s not an option, keep reading. Every website asks you to use a strong passphrase, but sadly, not everyone does. A passphrase like “pa$$word” is not strong, no matter what CNN says. I don’t even like the term “password” because it implies it should only be one word. That’s a recipe for disaster. Passphrases should be long, contain sever-

al words or fragments, and include a mix of capitalization, numbers, and special characters. And don’t use one passphrase for multiple accounts. On top of all that, swap out your passphrases every six months or so. That’s a lot to remember, so consider using a password manager for all of your account credentials. Use two-factor authentication If you haven't already, turn on two-factor authentication for every service that uses it. This ensures that even if someone has your password, they won't get access to your account without the code that's sent to your phone.

Keep it offline If a file's compromise would be devastating, it probably doesn't belong in the cloud in the first place. Though we frequently use cloud services to store our data, there’s no guarantee your service won’t be broken into. The security of cloud servers is completely out of your hands, so if one is hacked, there’s not much damage control you can do. Additionally, when you delete a file from your cloud service, you’re trusting that service to remove all copies of the file from its servers. Be sure to read and understand the company’s terms of service (ToS) and privacy policy before you use it to store sensitive information. If after reading the ToS and privacy policy you don’t feel the company prioritizes the security of your data, don’t store your sensitive files there. You still need somewhere to keep your files, though. Removable media devices are a relatively safe option—provided you don’t plug them into strange computers or networks— and they give you more physical control over your data. Treat it like you would a backup and don’t keep it connected to your computer. Keeping your digital life private isn’t that hard, but it does take a little effort. If you use good judgement, keep aware of your device settings, and follow the security measures outlined here, you won't get caught with your pants down.

Meet Menifee Resident Jean Olexa

By Robbie Motter Staff Writer

Jean Olexa, who is originally from New Jersey, moved to California to be close to her daughters, their husbands and families who are: Kerrie who lives in Murrieta and Kimberly who lives in Hemet and her adorable grandchildren Austin 5, Allison 2 who are Kerrie’s, and Ted 7, and Neil and Nate 5, who belong to Kim. Jean has three other grandchildren with her son Tom and his wife who live in Virginia, they are Jada 7, Xavier 5 and Alana 3. Jean is a person that loves to organize things! She has helped people get organized in their business and in their homes, pack to move and unpack at their new location, and organize garage sales. In fact, she helped me when my dad had things to sell when he put his house up for sale and moved to the Cherry Hills Club. I was amazed at how easy it was for her to have everything look perfect for the sale. It was so organized and I was most grateful that she was there to help as I had never done a garage sale before. My father was very happy with her work and was thrilled that we could connect with her. Another thing businesses hate to do is FILE and because she is so organized she can make your files look great and get everything caught up.

Years ago when I was in Corporate America, I hated to file so I would do it first thing in the morning so it would not build up. It seemed that I had so many projects in Washington DC to do; filing was not at the top of my priority list, nor on my staff’s priority list. How wonderful it would have been to have known Jean then. Recently Jean helped the Menifee Valley Chamber get caught up with their filing and did an amazing job and quickly as well. Jean’s special love is to be a Nanny as she loves children. Jean spent many years as a Nanny for clients, one very prestigious family in New Jersey where she lived before moving to California and one for a very long time in San Diego. And of course she loves being a grandmother so has lots of expertise with her grandchildren and always looks for cute little games she can play with them every time they are together. I have seen her with children and she is great sort of like a Mary Poppins. Jean knows

that she can make a difference in a child’s life. She helps the children with increasing their imagination, motivation, etiquette, reading and vocabulary. She says, “Every second is a priceless and crucial learning experience.” I first met Jean when she joined my Menifee NAFE group and found her to be such a woman with heart who cares so much about helping others. Since she was new in the area, she wanted to start promoting her organizing and Nanny businesses. She constantly gets rave reviews about her work. I was so impressed with her as a person that I nominated her for Senator Mike Morrell’s “Women of Distinction” award and she was thrilled to be at his event and be presented her certificate for being a Woman of Distinction which she totally is. I also nominated her for the President of the United States Call to Service Award for over 4,000 hours of service to the community and this was presented to her this past year. Jean has always loved to organize which is a job most people hate. In fact, years ago my daughter Lisa gave me as a Christmas gift a certificate for someone to organize my office and it was one of the best gifts I ever got! That person moved away and I was thrilled when Jean moved to Menifee as having someone that loves to organize is something we all can use. So if you are thinking of a special gift for the Holidays, Jean can put

together a gift certificate for you to give as a gift and I guarantee that the person getting the gift will be so happy. Our lives are so busy that we know we need to clean things out, get rid of things and yet there never seems to be enough time to get that task done. I know, as I always hear people saying they need help getting that job done as they just can’t get to it. So here is an easy solution -call Jean she loves doing it! When Jean is not organizing or playing with her grandchildren she loves to go dancing and is quite the dancer. Her other hobbies are: calligraphy, scrapbooking, reading, floral design, going to concerts and movies, and vacationing with her grandchildren. Jean is a member of the Menifee NAFE and also a member of the Menifee Valley Chamber as NAFE is a member of the Chamber. This year she joined the GFWC Menifee/ Sun City Women’s Club. Jean helped me this past year each month decorating Boston Billie’s restaurant for the different holidays. Last year she also helped me with gift baskets and the setup of the Silent Auction for the Menifee Valley Chamber’s 2nd Annual Strategies for Success Women’s Conference. I am going to again ask her to be on my team this year for the 3rd Annual event on April 17, 2015 at Menifee Lakes Country Club, and also to help me decorate for the GFWC Menifee/Sun City Women’s Club annual tea on March 21, 2015 at the Sun City Civic Association. She did a fantastic job of helping me decorate for the Extravaganza 2 event I chaired for the GFWC Menifee/Sun City Women’s Club in September. She has a knack for color and to make things look beautiful so she would also be great to help someone decorate their house or office. Jean is a woman who loves to give back to her community and we in Menifee are certainly glad that she moved to our town. So if you are interested in getting your house or business organized, she offers amazing pricing, contact Jean her email is gigi8247@gmail. com and phone 858-357-7295.

Finance Check Out This Year-end Financial Checklist As 2014 draws to a close, you may want to look back on the progress you’ve made this past year in various areas of your life — and that certainly includes progress toward your financial goals. At the same time, you may want to make some end-of-year moves that can close out 2014 on a positive note while paving the way for a productive 2015. Here are a few such moves to consider: Boost your retirement plan contributions. This actually isn’t an “end-of-year” move because you have until April 15, 2015, to contribute to your

Menifee Buzz—www.menifeebuzz.com Roth or Traditional IRA for the 2014 tax year. Nonetheless, the sooner you get extra dollars working for you in your IRA, the better. You can put in up to $5,500 to your IRA (or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older) for 2014. If you are self-employed, or run a small business, you also have until April 15 to contribute to a retirement account, such as a SEP IRA or a SIMPLE plan. In addition to helping you build resources for retirement, these types of plans can offer you some tax advantages — so if you haven’t established a retirement plan yet, consult with your financial and tax professionals. Sell your “losers.” If you own investments that have lost value since you purchased them, you can sell them before 2014 ends and use the tax loss to offset some capital gains you may have earned in other investments. If you don’t have any capital gains, you can use up to $3,000 of your tax losses to offset other ordinary income. And for a loss greater than $3,000, you can “carry over” the excess and deduct it from your taxes in future years. If you still liked the investment that you sold at

Want to Wait?

a loss, and you want to keep it in your portfolio, you could repurchase it, but you’ll have to wait 31 days to avoid violating the IRS’ “wash sale” rules. Keep in mind that these suggestions only apply to investments held outside your employer-sponsored retirement account; you can’t take a tax deduction on capital losses in a 401(k) or similar plan. Evaluate your 401(k) investment mix. You may be able to adjust the investment mix in your 401(k) as often as you like. So when evaluating your 401(k), make sure your holdings aren’t concentrated in just a few investments, and try to determine if your portfolio is still appropriate for your risk tolerance — not too aggressive or too conservative. Also, if your plan offers a “Roth” option, consider taking advantage of it —

By Brian E. Walker, CEO, MBA, LUTCF, DTM

“I want to wait...” So often I hear this statement coming out of someone’s mouth but really what they are saying is “I need an excuse at this moment.” 2015 will be here momentarily, are you ready or are you going to wait? (Just kidding you can’t) Wait to hit your business goals? Wait to take the next step? Wait until…? It’s time to start preparing for the New Year and start by setting your goals. Not New Year resolutions, not someday when Jupiter, Uranus and Earth align, actual goals and rungs to reach for in your business. A quote going around Facebook today is: “Good things come to those that wait WORK THEIR TAIL OFF.” Fitting for current events and with all things considered going on in the world. The Economy is recovering (so ‘they’ say), gas prices are down, election season is over and it’s the dawn of a new year. Why not take advantage of your time and talents and start to put the pieces together for your life puzzle.

Make the move today, physically or mentally, but take more than a moment to plan, act, and do your goals with no limitations to hold you back. The regular excuses don’t apply today, because tomorrow is a new day and there isn’t time to wait for the New Year. Take your business Up One Level. with a Roth, you won’t be able to deduct your 401(k) contributions from your taxes, but once you retire, you won’t be taxed on your withdrawals. Review your insurance coverage. If you’ve experienced any changes in your life in 2014 — new spouse, new child, divorce, new job, etc. — you may need to review your life insurance coverage to make sure that it’s still sufficient for your needs and that you have the correct beneficiaries in place. By making these and oth-

er moves, you can say a fond farewell to 2014, knowing that you’ve done what you could to help bolster your financial position — for 2015 and beyond. WEIGHT LOSS

vs

FAT LOSS

By Gonzalo Perez Helguero CPT, CN Fitness & Nutrition Expert T.R.I.M. Fitness The weight was practically falling off your body just a few weeks ago, and now you’re wondering if your scale is broken because no matter what you do or eat, your weight won’t budge. Do you feel like you have you hit a weight loss plateau? It’s time to learn why, and what you can do about it. What gives? Why did your routine suddenly stop working, and what can you do to push through this weight loss plateau?

Understanding “Weight Loss Vs. Fat Loss” “Weight loss” is a tricky little devil because it doesn’t differentiate between changes in fat, muscle, and water. The goal, of course, is to lose maximum fat and minimum muscle, and to keep water retention at a healthy minimum. When you step on the scale and register a pound lighter than the day or week before, you probably assume that you’ve lost a pound of fat; if you weigh the same or more, you probably assume that you’ve lost no fat, or gained. Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Nothing swings weight up or down as easily as water retention, for example. If you eat a lot of sodium and carbs, and drink little water, you will retain quite a bit of water, giving you that puffy, smooth look. This can easily add 3–5 pounds in a day, which can be quite disturbing if you happen to hit the scale in this state. On the flip side, you eat little sodium and carbs and drink plenty of water, your body will flush water out, giving you a harder, more defined look, which might lead you to think that it was a great day of fat loss. The unpredictability of water retention is one reason why I only weigh myself once per week, on the same day, in the morning, naked, and using a Body Diagnostic tool as opposed to a regular scale. Unfortunately, weighing yourself multiple times per week, or worse, per day, can quickly kill your confidence and mess with your head. I also recommend that you choose a “weigh day” that doesn’t contain a cheat meal, as this can often add a pound or two of water that will come out by the end of the following day (my experience, at least). What is a TRUE Weight Loss Plateau? A true weight loss plateau is a situation where you’re no longer losing fat. I consider that I’ve hit a plateau if my weight hasn’t changed in two weeks. No change on the scale after one week of “consistent” healthy eating isn’t necessarily a reason for concern–I could’ve lost that pound of fat but happen to be retaining a bit of water, or maybe my bowel movements weren’t as regular in the prior day or two. No change in weight after two weeks of clean eating tells me that I’m probably stuck.

Some Fat-Loss Facts to Keep in Mind Before I cover how to break these plateaus, I want you to know a few things about losing fat.

1. Weight Loss Plateaus Are to Be Expected Just about everyone experiences weight loss plateaus. If you have no idea what I’m talking about and are able to reach single-digit body fat percentages with complete ease, count yourself lucky. It’s very common for people to hit several plateaus on their journeys to a “six pack/ flat belly” because, well, the human body is just stubborn when it comes to shedding fat. I’ve found that I can’t get below 8% body fat on diet alone (you can only reduce your calories so much, or you begin to eat up muscle) – I have to add in cardio if I want to continue losing. When I bulk, I usually end off around 15-16% body fat, and I can “diet” off the first 4-5% or so, but then I hit a plateau that only 3 days per week of cardio can cure (30-45 minutes per session). Then, the next plateau for me comes around 6%. If I want to go lower, I have to up my cardio to 5 days per week. Everyone I’ve trained and otherwise helped has experienced the same phenomenon, but the thresholds vary. I’ve known a few rare people that can diet lower than 10% without adding cardio, but most people can’t break double-digit body fat percentages without a very strict diet and regular cardio routine. 2. The More You Lose, the Harder It Gets The leaner you become, the longer it takes to lose fat healthily (the key, as you want to preserve as much muscle and strength as possible while losing fat)..

3. Your Body Has a “Comfort Zone” Although it might sound a bit bro-scientific, it’s the best way I can describe a phenomenon experienced by me and millions of other athletes around the world. The body seems to have a weight (and, accordingly, a body fat percentage) that it is most comfortable at. Your natural appetite tends to maintain this weight and if you eat less than this, you feel hungry. If you eat more than this, you feel quite full. For some, this “comfort zone” is relatively fat, while others settle into a weight that is quite lean. For me, for example, I find that my body is most comfortable around 11-12% body fat (which would currently put me at about 178 lbs). I don’t have to watch my calories too closely and I can cheat several times per week, and I’ll just stay around 11.5%. Now, maintaining a weight under this comfort zone requires watching your calories, and often including some cardio in your routine. Getting fatter than this requires regular overeating, and if this continues for too long, the comfort zone creeps higher and higher.

5 Ways to Break Your Weight Loss Plateaus Alright, now that you know the difference between weight loss plateaus and fat loss plateaus, here are three “foolproof” ways to jump-start your body’s furnace again to keep the fat coming off. 1. Control the “Hidden Calories” Most weight loss plateaus are caused by nothing more than “calorie creep”–that is, eating more calories than you think. This, combined with an ever-slowing metabolism, is a guaranteed formula for stagnation. Calories can creep in from many places. Purposeless snacking, eating out at restaurants (they load calories into meals with butter, oil, sauces, etc.), overdoing it with condiments, and drinking alcohol are all common ways to add enough calories to stall your weight loss without making you feel like you’re completely “off your diet.” The sad truth is a mere 200-300 calories

2. Increase Your Cardio If you know that your daily caloric target is good and you have absolutely no calorie creep, then you should increase your cardio. You can add another day if possible (I don’t recommend more than 5 days per week if you’re also weight training) The idea is to just tip the scales a little bit more in the direction of fat loss and observe the results. If the first round of extra cardio doesn’t do it, add more (another 10 minutes to each session, for instance), and you’ll get there. 3. Embrace the Cheat Meal Yup, believe it or not, the cheat meal actually helps you lose fat. How? Well, first there’s the psychological boost, which keeps you happy and motivated, which ultimately makes sticking to your diet easier. But there’s also a physiological boost. Studies on overfeeding (the scientific

too many per day can completely halt fat loss. To put this into perspective, that’s only a couple handfuls of nuts, a few tablespoons of fatty salad dressing, or a small bag of chips. Yup, fat loss is that finicky. It’s not very complicated, but it requires absolute precision. So, to overcome the “calorie creep,” you simply have to know exactly what’s going into your body every day. You can keep a food journal, or you can do what I do: calculate what you need each day, break it down into daily meals, and eat the same thing every day, every meal. I don’t have the time or patience to work a bunch of variety into my diet, so I embrace the simplicity of choosing nutritious foods that I like, and eating them over and over.

term for binging on food) show that doing so can boost your metabolic rate by anywhere from 3-10%. While this sounds good, it actually doesn’t mean much when you consider that you would need to eat a anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand extra calories in a day to achieve this effect. More important are the effects cheating has on a hormone called leptin, which regulates hunger, your metabolic rate, appetite, motivation, and libido, as well as serving other functions in your body. When you’re in a caloric deficit and lose body fat, your leptin levels drop. This, in turn, causes your metabolic rate to slow down, your appetite to increase, your motivation to wane, and your mood to sour. On the other hand, when you give your

body more energy (calories) than it needs, leptin levels are boosted, which can then have positive effects on fat oxidation, thyroid activity, mood, and even testosterone levels. So if it’s an increase in leptin levels that you really want, how do you best achieve it? Eating carbohydrates is the most effective way. Second to that is eating protein (high-protein meals also raise your metabolic rate). Dietary fats aren’t very effective at increasing leptin levels, and alcohol actually inhibits it. So, if your weight is stuck and you’re irritable and demotivated, a nice kick of leptin might be all you need to get the scales moving again. Have a nice cheat meal full of protein and carbs, and enjoy the boost in your leptin levels. It can help your weight loss! 4. Lift Heavier Weights If you’re familiar with any of my work, you know I’m a big fan of lifting heavier weights. Well, among the many benefits of lifting heavy is the fact that it helps speed up fat loss. A study published by Greek sports scientists found that men that trained with heavy weights (80-85% of their one-rep max, or “1RM”) increased their metabolic rates over the following three days, burning hundreds more calories than the men that trained with lighter weights (45-65% of their 1RM). So hit the weights and hit them hard if you want to jack up your metabolic rate and in turn, speed up your fat loss. And if you want to score extra points, focus on compound lifts like squats and deadlifts, because these are the types that burn the most post-workout calories. Summary I hope you found this article helpful and remember that the journey to a lean, muscular body is a marathon, not a sprint. The Tip of the Triangle By John Walker Walker Physical Therapy

With the holiday season upon us, a popular question buzzing around is what the optimal way to lose weight and improve ones fitness is. There are so many studies and options that it is somewhat mind boggling and can make an individual feel overwhelmed with what the right choice is for them. I will strive to keep things simple by emphasizing the three sides of optimal fitness and also speak about what I feel is the tip of the triangle. The first side of the triangle is nutrition. We all know what we should be eating. You cannot get enough vegetables, fresh greens, and fruits. Of course some individuals will have specific dietary guidelines to follow. For example, diabetics will need to be very careful with fruits and potatoes. If you are not vegan, you will want to eat lean meats and fish. We all need to minimize sweets, baked treats, processed foods, and chips (my personal weakness!). In addition, we need to be minimizing empty calories such as soft drinks, juices, and alcohol. The second side of the triangle is cardio...walking, biking, swimming, and fitness classes are all perfect exam-

ples of ways to get cardio. The key is to get your heart rate up to around 60-80% of your max, and sustain that for 20-80 minutes 3-5 times per week. Of course, with all exercise it is wise to consult with your physician or physical therapist before partaking in physical activity. The third side of the triangle is strength training. I also feel that this is the tip of the triangle, and should be emphasized not only in our youth, but especially as we contin-

ue to age. Resistance training can be done with weights, bands, in the water, and even with isometric training (using ones' own body weight). In a recent Duke study, the research shows that by performing strength training first, an individual will actually burn more calories when they do cardio. In the aging process, muscles will atrophy and in order to continue being active and preventing injury, we must keep ourselves strong and perform resistance training. For

every 3 lbs of muscle gained, you will burn an extra 120 calories a day without doing anything! To wrap this up, I have briefly covered the 3 sides of the triangle in preparation for the upcoming holidays. We should touch all 3 sides of this triangle for optimum health benefits. However, the tip of the triangle is where our main focus should be, as we will reap the most benefits now and further along in the aging process. Happy healthy holidays!
