INSIDE BUSINESS LAW UPDATE

If you run a business in California you are probably well aware that the minimum wage in California is increasing to $10.00 per hour on January 1, 2016. In fact, a small number of cities in California are increasing the minimum wage even more. There is a ballot initiative to increase minimum wage to $15.00 dollars. If you are an employer or employee, this should be reason enough to get out and vote in the next voting season.

$18 Million Overpass Project Set to Alleviate Traffic Terrors on Newport Road

by C.J. Leger The $18 million Holland Overpass Project is set to alleviate some of the traffic terrors and congestion in the area. In mid August, the city announced that the project received the green light to continue development. This could not have come at a better time. Traffic and safety have been a cornerstone for political agendas in the past few years with many campaigning politicians promising safer streets in the form of increased lighting and traffic solutions. City officials have extended themselves in order to provide transparency about the project to residents. On August 5th, the City Council held a workshop detailing the plans for the $18 million project. The Council also hosted in an open house at the Mount San Jacinto College Campus, which sits adjacent to the work area on August 18. Residents and business owners came to view the plans and project goals for the development, which is expected to be the answer to their prayers. Since the city was incorporated in 2008 and an influx of businesses and residents established itself, the area has been highly criticized in terms of road safety. Congestion has swallowed the intersections and east to west main arteries, which residents are required to

travel through to get to main parts of the city. Developers claimed that an excess of trips through the area could be reduced using an overpass system. The plans were drawn and it is reportedly said that the overpass will reduce over 14,000 trips a day through Scott Road. Newport Road, which is also a heavily traveled artery will receive a reduction of over 12,500 trips per day. The system is designed to provide an additional east to west crossing for drivers in the city. In order to construct the overpass, Wildwood Way will be realigned to run parallel to the overpass and Holland Road will be fitted to join Wildwood Way. The overpass will meet up with Hanover Lane on the east side of the city where it will drop down to street level. While this all sounds like our troubles are over, construction is not set to begin until next spring. In the meantime traffic will continue to be an arduous ordeal, but it will be up to us to ensure that we engage in as many safe practices as we can to alleviate the possibilities of accidents and lower the risks of negative personal actions such as road rage. There are a few things you can do to engage in safe driving practices while in the area. I'll mention some of these simply to reiterate what we already know (so we don't forget). Do not text and drive - texting can wait. Get used to the practice of park-

ing or pulling over to the side of the road if you must send a text, no matter how small it may be. Avoid doing this, especially in the Newport Road area, as congested roads can lead to accidents. Do not drink and drive - Riverside County Police Departments have implemented many checkpoints and initiatives to catch drunk drivers in the act over the past 24 months. While you may think you've only had a few drinks and that you're OK to drive, remember that this year there have been many accidents where innocent drivers have been killed because of drunk drivers. The law will not be lenient for those caught and charged with the DUI. We mention this especially for this particular area, where congestion can create a perilous situation for a driver who is under the influence and becomes distracted. We came up with some strategies that can also help with road rage and anxiety. Avoid using cell phones at all times in this area. Even if you have it connected with Bluetooth, sometimes speaking to someone else on the phone can require much of your attention with drivers turning in and out of lanes attempting to get ahead of the crowds. This can lead to minor accidents and stall your day even more.

Concerns and questions surround the Southwest Detention Center in French Valley this month, as another inmate was found dead on August 21 inside of his cell. Investigations have been launched to determine the cause of the inmate’s death, but in the wake of this new scandal, many are remembering that in the past year, 13 other inmates have also died in the custody of authorities at Detention Centers in Riverside County. $18 Million Overpass Project Set to Alleviate Traffic Terrors on Newport Road

by C.J. Leger Work on a playlist that provides you with calming and nostalgic music. Use this playlist while driving. Psychologically, your mind will be more at ease if it feels like it is in a nostalgic place, making itself want to stay in that zone for longer. This can be best described using the example of when you encounter a song from your teenage years in the grocery store. Even though you may be done with check out and are about to walk out, many of us find odd reasons to stay behind until the song is over. The same principle applies to driving. You won't feel as anxious to get out of traffic if your mind is at ease, greatly reducing your probability of engaging in risky maneuvers to beat the crowd. Double the time it takes you to normally drive to the end of your route. Giving yourself more time to get to where you're going will make you less likely to become anxious to get there if you know that you are not running late. Many drivers often cut it too short and become enraged and nervous when

Menifee Buzz—www.menifeebuzz.com they realize they're sitting in traffic for longer than they expected. This is a volatile combination that often leads to road rage. Give yourself enough space between you and the driver in front of you. Traffic often makes drivers stop short, causing rear end accidents. You can avoid doing that to give yourself enough time to stop short if you need to. Finally, we can recommend grabbing yourself some of your favorite cookies, candies, or beverages before you hit the road. Eating delicious snacks while waiting in traffic can greatly reduce your anxiety. As with your mind and nostalgic music, your mind will be more at ease and willing to stay in the current zone if it's experiencing some of its favorite foods.

Art

There’s a new author in Menifee

Carol South Honored by Fellow Artists By Bill Zimmerman, Arts Council Menifee Take a look at Menifee’s art movement. The city enjoys its successful and active Arts Council. Look closer. You now see people, the volunteers that make it happen. One such volunteer is Carol South, who is being honored by the art organization for the leadership role she played. Traditionally, art organizations are volunteer-based. They are formed to benefit local artists in a community. The efforts are a labor of love, with members coming together to plan and host events that promote the arts. Arts Council Menifee is no exception. The area’s local artists have benefitted from the vision and efforts of Carol South, an artist herself, whose work is greatly admired by her peers. South is one of the organization’s founding members and was instrumental in creating the art gallery that adorns the walls of the Kay Ceniceros Community Center. She has served as the Co-Chair of Arts Council Menifee’s Visual Arts Division that has grown in numbers since inception. South recently retired from the position, and has been succeeded by fellow artist and friend Linda Morrison who now heads

the division. While coordinating the gallery and events, South participated as one of its artists, displaying her work for the public to view. She still shows her original paintings along with her line of unique greeting cards. Some of her cards include original hand painted images, which can be personalized upon request. Viewers instantly notice that South’s artwork is from a perspective foreign to most of us. “I found real inspiration while visiting other countries”, said the artist. Her travels included a Kenyan safari where she photographed wildlife in their native surroundings. Those images provide a reference as she creates “Into Africa”, a series of wild animal illustrations specially framed using borders that simulate the detailed designs of Masai beadwork. This group of works includes use of watercolor and oil, as well as unique etched intaglio and linocut printing techniques. South enjoys working in a wide

variety of media including watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel, colored pencil, collage, printmaking and mixed media. She finds that the subject matter influences her selection of media. South’s early art training equipped her with the skills to produce lifelike portraits and to hand render images in realistic detail, work that has earned numerous awards. As a small child growing up in New Mexico, her introduction to painting was by her mother, an award-winning professional photo colorist who applied transparent oils to sepia-toned portrait photographs. This early instruction has enabled her to produce life-like portraits. Along with creating stunning artwork, South has played a contributory role in the development of the arts in her community. When she first moved to Menifee, she founded the Oasis Fine Arts Group and served as the group's president for four years. She is also a member of the Fallbrook Art Association. “It gives me great pleasure to see all of the activities here in Menifee that promote the arts, and I have been thrilled to be a part of it all”, said South. Rachel M. Sparks who lives in our community has written her first children’s book entitled “Counting is Fun.” Her new published book is sold on amazon.com and self-publishing through her website. How it all started: As she was helping one of her grandchildren count numbers from one to ten she thought it would be more fun counting if there was a counting book to show her grandchild. Then thoughts of a number book came into play which started the creation of her story. Rachel wanted something cute and funny for young children to follow along. This made her think of silly animals and pets for children to count. Rachel was very excited about her book project that she discussed it with her husband John. He was happy and wanted to support her on this new adventure. Then Rachel realized she needed someone to do all the illustrations for her book. Since her husband was retired and she felt he was a good artist she offered him the opportunity to partner with her. She thought what a great experience it would be to work side-byside with her husband. With time and patience the illustrations came together making the story line perfect. However, before the book took form Rachel consulted a self-publishing author by the name of Nancy O’Neill. With the help of a professional self-publishing author Rachel was able to get the right advice she needed to start on her own children’s book. Rachel admits that her book would not have been completed without the capable assistance from the well-known author. Rachel and John are thrilled to announce their first children’s book entitled “Counting is Fun.” Part of the proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. In addition, Rachel also acknowledges and appreciates her friend, Sue Wallis Williams of Wallis Williams Design, for helping her use Squarespace to create the beautiful website that shows off her adorable children’s book. For more information about Rachel’s book, please visit her website at www. rachelmsparks.com

Motte Historical Museum to host Farmers Market Wednesdays from 4pm to 8pm

By Robbie Motter Today families love eating healthier and because of that more and more Farmers Markets are starting up. Not only does it provide the healthier food, but it also provides a way for farmers and small business owners to sell their wares and get to be known in the community. A Farmers Market provides great items you can buy; you can network and also visit the unique Motte Historical Museum which has a large display of antique cars. Also the first of every month Mott’s has a car show. There is lots of history at both Motte Historical Museum and Wickerd Farm for you and the family to explore, The Wednesday night Farmers Market at Motte Historical Museum is located at 28380 US Hwy 74 #15, Menifee, CA. If you would like to participate and have a booth at this new Farmers Market, call Paul Gross 760-218-5279 or email Paul Gross paulgross3@aol. com. The booths range in price from $15-$30.00 food booths have to be on the blanket health permit, Call Paul on what the fee for that is. This is the 4th Farmers Market that Paul Gross has put together. The Wickerd Farm Farmers market takes place on Sundays from 9am to

2pm and is located at 26852 Scott Road between Murrieta and Haun Road in Menifee. Fresh produce, honey, farm eggs plus unique items that the 25-30 venders have to sell. Hundreds of people show up every Sunday. Fall is coming and that is a very busy time at Wickerd Farm as the Pumpkin Patch, hayrides, Haunted House will be in full force and the Christmas Tree Farm which is always such a big success with the community. Thousands of people show up for these special events. They are also adding a unique butterfly garden on the hill and later in September will be opening a new nature hike at Wickerd Farm. Engaging the community is what creates the success of a farmers market. Farmer’s market relationships are characterized by a handshake. The hand that picked the tomato, fed the chickens, provided the honey, and formed the cheese is the hand that accepts customers' money, answers questions, and seals a handshake contract: This food is good and clean and safe. And keeps families healthy. The relationship between farmer and eater—vendor and customer—is the primary relationship that exists at farmers markets. However, it is not the only relationship at a farmers market. Many community partners are involved in successful Farmers Markets and building solid relationships with these part-

ners strengthens the market and contributes to its long-term viability and success. There is such a variety of vendors that customers can find everything they need in one trip to their local farmers markets. So mark the days and times on your calendar as these two locations are totally the place to show up. They offer so much, great food, great gifts and wonderful people that take their time to serve their community. So take time and take your family to the Menifee Farmers

market and support your community and the people that make these Farmers Markets happen. Thank you Paul Gross for all your hard work of getting these Farmers Markets up and running, it is not an easy task, lots of visits to City Hall to get all the permits, meetings with the vendors to make sure they are top notch and so much more. Hope to see you soon at the new Mott's Farmers Market on Wednesday and the Wickerd Farm Farmers Market on Sundays.

Local MEET MENIFEE RESIDENT BELINDA TILLMAN…A SELF TAUGHT DESIGNER By: Robbie Motter-Staff writer I recently met Belinda Tillman at Wickerd Farms Sunday Farmers Market. I was so impressed at the beautiful jewelry, clothes and other things that she makes that I felt I had to let Menifee learn about this dynamic creative woman. Belinda Tillman is a self-taught designer who was born in Los Angeles, Ca... When she had her first child they were not in a position to buy the cute clothes for their daughter that Belinda dreamed of dressing her in. So (being as determined as she was) Belinda brought a second hand sewing machine and begin cutting up her old clothes to make dresses for her daughter. She became extremely good and within a couple of years her friends

were ordering clothes from her for their children. After all of her children were grown they (both she and her husband) quit their jobs and moved to live in Grenada in the Caribbean, where they stayed for many, many years. Her husband went to work teaching and Belinda opened and ran an extremely successful business, along with teaching sewing. Her designs are literally being worn around the world, all the way from South Africa to Germany, the U.K., all of the Caribbean Islands and many more countries. However, due to a horrible hurricane which destroyed the Island, they found it necessary to return to this country. Shortly after returning her husband and Belinda went back to work and have since recently retired from their jobs. Belinda is now happy to be able to do what she loves to do, which is design clothing and jewelry, along with various types of arts and crafts. When you visit them you will find that they have something for everyone, from the person who prefers dainty jewelry to those that desire very elaborate styles. A short example of some of the items she has available for sale include (but are not limited to) African and Rasta clothing, hats, jewelry and belts. You will also find jewelry made out of bamboo; ostrich egg shells, sea urchins, turtle shells and a large selection of chain jewelry with coins hanging (beautiful). In addition she has purses made from using the whole turtle, the whole coconut, gourds, and

Page A 7 various styles of leather purses. You will find jewelry for your hands, feet, ankles and arms along with bracelets and arm bands made from cow horn. The list is endless; she has hundreds of earrings, ear cuffs and more. Oh yes, she even has hand made writing journals and photo albums which she has made from using banana and palm leaves along with hand made paper which she has made myself. You will also find ethnic and culture style clothing which include hats and purses made using leather and Mud Cloth. Each item is a one of a kind peace and is extremely beautiful. Mud Cloth is 100% cotton which is hand woven into strips. After this is done the strips are joined together and then the fabric is hand painted. All colors used are from natural ingredients which (depending on the color) can be from the bark of trees, berries, tea or coffee. So, keep in mind, if you are looking for a special gift to give to someone, or you would like to treat yourself to something nice, be sure to come see Belinda. Whatever the reason, hurry on down to the Farmer’s Market in Menifee on Scott Road. They are open for business on Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m... Once you get there look for, Charles and Belinda Tillman. You won’t be sorry! Here We Go Again By John Farrell Again we are off to another part of the world. This time it's the boot shaped peninsula known as Italy. The name of this easy going restaurant is Giovannis. Once again hidden in one of our many small strip malls that dot our little corner of the world. When you first walk in to this little delight you will think you walked into just another family restaurant. Well! Appearances can be deceiving. One look at the extensive menu and you'll know this is far from your typical family fair. With Italian choices that will boggle the mind. From your usual Italian items to truly gourmet items normally found only in far more expensive establishments. When I say Giovannis is affordable that is an understatement. How about a lunch buffet that includes pizza, soup and salad buffet for only $7.99. Then there are the lunch specials for $6.00 that offer items like spaghetti, meatball sliders, a small pizza and more.

Meet Murrieta resident Gary Hawthorne,

owner of Hawthorne Worldwide.com

By Robbie Motter Gary Hawthorne in addition to running Hawthorneworldwide.com. is also an Entrepreneur, and sales and marketing professional. I first met Gary Hawthorne about 5 years ago when he was introduced to me by Menifee resident Robert "Hollywood" Moreno. Over the years I have used Gary's great talent to create flyers for my clients and recently he designed some unique U Tube Videos for my Nafe networks across the country. Gary has been married to his wife Michelle for 36 years. He has been building websites since 2008, and in fact Gary did my website www.robbiemotter.com. and did our www. wrnafe.com website which for over three years was also used to promote some Menifee Valley Chamber events that I created and was the Chair of. Gary and his wife Michelle have been residents of Murrieta for 10 years moving here in April 2005 After high school Gary enlisted in the Marine Corps and under President Kennedy at the height of the cold war still feels that the show of force regarding the Cuban Crisis in the early sixties averted further military action with Russia. This is also Ironic considering Gary is now working with Yakov Smirnoff on a PBS SoCal special. For those who don't know Yakov, he was billed as Ronald Reagan's favorite comedian and came from Russia with love. Yakov gained worldwide fame for his comedic talent and was sworn in as a citizen of The United States in 1986. He is doing a big performance at the Performing Arts Center in Escondido on September 26th which will be filmed by PBS and Gary is doing all the marketing strategies for that event. Gary is a man of great talents, he has developed a talent as a website developer, whiteboard video guru and was featured on Talk of The Town. Blessed to have a diverse background that helped to bring out

the skill and passion for the work he does in helping small businesses get a presence on the web. I know I am so glad I met him as I can call him and need something and within a day or two I have it. His whiteboard U Tube videos have been a big hit with my Nafe networks across the country. I told him I needed to get the word out globally on Nafe and the next day he created the Global video and then my networks across the country each wanted one that was about their networks. I gave him the task and he completed those in a few days. Already those videos have helped Nafe see a great increase in New Members as well as some old members who dropped out have returned. Some of my members saw them and loved them and have hired Gary to do some for their businesses. Here

are the links of just two of those unique U Tube videos, one for Nafe Global https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=P5bS8LDaWnM and another for one of my Nafe members who has a clinic. Here is the Clinic Utube https://youtu.be/yee9J3FNEFo. He also is creating two U Tube videos for another Nafe member Shellie Hunt the CEO/Founder of The Women of Global Change. So there is much one can do with these UTube Videos. The Nafe videos are being marketing by each Nafe director across the country on their network pages and also their own personal social media pages as well as they are asking their members to post them on their social media pages so they are going viral very quickly and getting results. Since also recently chartered the new Menifee Valley Lions Club I asked Gary to do one of the Videos

for them as well and the next day I had it, here is that link.He is working with their President to get them a website as well. Here is that Utube videohttps://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=QpfN7Ba6rug This past week had an idea of a business card I wanted and gave him the idea the next morning the card was done. What I know is that Gary Hawthorne is very creative and all you have to do is tell him what you are trying to accomplish and the next day or two you have a completed project that is right on target of what you want to let people know about you or your business. I know I am so happy that I met him and love doing business with him. Experience embraces several industries from steel, steel fabrication, visual communications, franchise development, limited partnership development, holographic business development, licensing, marketing & advertising, environmental stress management, graphic art, website development, computer peripherals to database administration. Here are just a few of the things that Gary has done in his life: Outsource consultant for Polaroid Business Holography, Hughes Power Products Division of Hughes Aircraft subsidiary of General Motors Corporation, Window on Wall Street, Honeywell Clean Air Machines, Environ, and Tishman West Management Company (The City Shopping Center a mixed use development). Licensing highlights include licensing contracts with Apollo 12 Astronaut Captain Richard F. Gordon US Navy Retired, MGM/United Artists All Dogs Go To Heaven II. Developed contract with The Red Lion Hotel in Costa Mesa California in tandem with The Zimmer Luxary Motor Coach that resulted in Prime Minister of Maylasia's exclusive use of the vehicle during his stay at The Red Lion Hotel. As a former licensing agent for apollo 12 astronaut, Dick Gordon "shoot

for the stars and if you fall short you could still land on the moon" and attitude determines altitude. Gary is also working with a Chinese company headquartered in the US called KIU KIU (kiukiu.com) a universal mobile device mounting system Over the years Gary has done many Television and Radio interviews, and has written many published articles.some in Travelhose Magazine-Nations #1 in room magazine, The Spectrum International Newspaper and more. Gary also did many Licensing Contracts: MGM & United Artists animated film, All Dogs Go To Heaven II the most successful non-Disney animated film ever. Licensing contract involved holographic imagery dog tags, stickers & pogs, The Food Berts a children’s nutritional property by Jormanshire in Omaha Nebraskam The Pair O Normals a proposed animated TV series by 3 AM Productions about a Pair of Detective’s solving various issues with a cast of unusual characters. As an outsource consultant to Hughes Power Products, he negotiated with Hughes to create holograms of The Reagan Freedom Coin and The Mighty Duck Logo for several applications. He worked with Jack Ford, former President Gerald Ford's son who owned and operated California Infospace over 40 shopping centers throughout California with information booths in conjunction with The California Lottery. Employed video display terminals providing third party advertisers. Celebrities he hs met along the way include: Merv Griffin, Rich Little, Marty Ingles & Shirley Jones, Linda Rondstat,Apollo 12 Astronaut Captain Richard F. Gordon USN Retired,Susan Anspah,Wilt Chamberlain, Jack Ford (Former President Gerald Ford’s Son. Gary can be reached at cell 760-705-4626 or email garyhawthorne@gmail.com, he is a great person to know and wonderful to work with.

BUSINESS LAW UPDATE

By Jeremiah Raxter, Esq If you run a business in California you are probably well aware that the minimum wage in California is increasing to $10.00 per hour on January 1, 2016. In fact, a small number of cities in California are increasing the minimum wage even more. There is a ballot initiative to increase minimum wage to $15.00 dollars. If you are an employer or employee, this should be reason enough to get out and vote in the next voting season. There are some employees who are exempt from the minimum wage law, such as outside salespersons, individuals who are the parent, spouse, or child of the employer, and apprentices regularly indentured under the State Division of Apprenticeship Standards. There is an exception for “learners”, regardless of age, who may be paid not less than 85% of the minimum wage rounded to the nearest nickel during their first 160 hours of employment in occupations in which

September, 2015 section 226.7 is a wage subject to a three-year statute of limitations. Whether you are a business or employee that may have questions regarding wage and hour issues you should consult a local business attorney. This is certainly the case of… “spending a little on education is better than spending a lot on learning a lesson.”

they have no previous similar or related experience. There are also exceptions for employees who are mentally or physically disabled, or both, and for nonprofit organizations such as sheltered workshops or rehabilitation facilities that employ disabled workers. Such individuals and organizations may be issued a special license by the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement authorizing employment at a wage less than the legal minimum wage. Just for trivia purposes, did you know that effective January 1, 2016, the minimum monthly salary for sheepherders will be $1777.98? However, wage and hour labor issues expand much further than

just determining minimum wage. Employers are required to provide their hourly employees certain rest periods which are calculated by the total amount of hours worked. Rest periods are not required for workers that work less than three and half hours. Generally, the “lunch” period should be given to workers in the middle of their shift. The penalty of not providing employees with their rest period is the payment of one hour of their regular rate of pay. Employers should be aware that pursuant to Murphy v. Cole, the California Supreme Court held that the remedy for meal and rest period violations of “one additional hour of pay” under Labor Code

Generation X: Taking Retirement into Their Own Hands possibly working part-time, as consultants or running their own business.

With all the attention paid to baby boomers, it’s hard to believe another generation is rapidly approaching retirement age. In 2015, the first wave of Generation X is turning fifty. And Gen Xers are taking retirement into their own hands. According to the recent Ameriprise Financial Retirement 2.0 study1, an overwhelming majority of Gen X say they started saving and investing early for retirement. They’re also looking to redefine retirement. As this generation heads into their golden years, health, wealth and work are their top priorities. Thoughts on Work The Gen Xers see work as an important part of their lives. Half of the group is currently working to achieve financial stability (55%) while a third say they can’t afford not to work (33%). With retirement on the horizon, Gen X does not plan to say goodbye to work anytime soon. Instead, they plan to continue working in retirement, but in a way that is more meaningful than just earning a paycheck. Nearly 3 out of 4 survey respondents plan to stay in the workplace beyond retirement age in order to pursue something meaningful (73%). Staying mentally and socially engaged tops the list of priorities for work in retirement. Gen Xers anticipate work at this time in their lives to be less stressful (50%), more rewarding (33%), socially meaningful (24%) and more interesting (18%). They see themselves

Money Matters For the most part, this group seems to be taking ownership of saving for retirement, with 77 percent reporting they are taking steps to save enough to afford the lifestyle they want. In addition, 64 percent are investing with the goal of generating extra income for their retirement. Not everyone is on board, however. A minority of Gen Xers in this study say they haven’t really planned for their retirement (22%) and a few have not even thought about it (1%). The majority of Gen Xers surveyed have taken advantage of an employer-sponsored savings plan. Eight in 10 report currently saving in a 401(k), while seven in 10 regularly put money aside in an IRA or similar account. Nearly one third of this group expects these savings to be a main source of income in retirement (29%). Far fewer respondents expect to rely on Social Security or pensions to help fund their new lifestyle—a significant change from previous generations. Goals and Challenges Generation X is confident about their ability to save for retirement, but they maintain some worries as they consider their future. Despite the Great Recession, 27 percent of Gen Xers managed to increase the amount they save. Some report investing more conservatively. Owing to their disciplined nature, it’s no wonder this group has either already paid off major debts (23%) or is confident they are on a path to do so in the future (63%). This group also plans to retire on their own terms while maintaining their current lifestyle in retirement (65%), and with some anticipating an ability to live more comfortably (22%). The top retirement activities they envision are: Travel (80%) Relaxing (64%) Staying in shape (50%) Pursuing hobbies (50%) Spending time with grandkids (48%) Taking on volunteer work (36%) While, Generation X is confident about their ability to save for retirement, but they maintain some worries as they con-

sider their future. Some respondents are concerned about potential costs of caring for aging parents (46%) and supporting children (22%). The cost of healthcare also weighs on them with 75 percent saying it’s one of their concerns.

The Role of Financial Advice Gen Xers who work with a financial professional appear to be more proactive with retirement saving. With the support and insight of a financial expert, they are more likely to be on track to save enough to live comfortably in retirement (38%), cover emergency expenses (35%) and leave a legacy (17%). Talk to a financial advisor to explore your dreams for retirement and what you can do to get ready for your financial future. ON THE MARK

with Robbie Motter DID YOU KNOW THAT TESTIMONIALS ADD PUNCH TO YOUR MARKETING MATERIALS?

Testimonials from satisfied clients and customers can add flair to your marketing materials, But some business owners don't know where to start or how to properly use testimonials. Here are a few tips. Soliciting Testimonials: If your customers don't send you, letters of praise then you need to ask them to give you a testimonial. Simple send a letter or an email to clients and customers who are happy with your product or service and ask for their comments. Remember there is POWER in the ASKING. In your letter or email, you should ask your customers to give you their opinion of your service and the products they purchased. Ask these clients what they liked about your services and encourage them to give you any suggestions or criticisms. Also let your client know that this information will help you gather valuable information, which will help you serve your clients better in the future. Using Testimonials: Always use authentic testimonials. Do not make them up. It is very hard

to match the sincerity and credibility of praise from real customers and clients, now matter how great a writer you are. If a customer tells you to just write what you want and they will just sign it, let them know that you would prefer if they just give you their own opinion in their own words. Longer testimonials that consist of two or three sentences are more believable than single rod testimonials. Ask for specific, detailed testimonials rather than general testimonials. Use Full Attribution: To increase the believability for your testimonials, it is important to have the person's name, city and state, and if it is a business customer, include their job title and company. The readers are more likely to believe a full disclosure testimony than those that conceal the identity of the speaker. Keep Testimonials Together Most marketing experts believe that it is better to group all your testimonials together within your materials. When a prospect reads all the testimonials in one place, one right after the another, they have more impact and power than when the testimonials are separated and scattered all over your material piece.

You can do this in a box, on a separate page or on a separate sheet. The separate sheet of paper has a certain advantage in that as new testimonials come in, they can be changed without having to redo your marketing materials. Always Get Permission Make sure you get permission from your customer to reprint what they have sent you before you include it any copy that you send out. Sent them a letter or email outlining the quote you want to reprint and ask permission to include them in ads, social media, direct mail, brochures and other materials used to promote your firm. This general release allows you to use the testimonial over and over without having to ask permission every time you want to use the quotes in

any letters or marketing materials. Start today by identifying those customers who are pleased with your services and asking them to put it in writing. Biz buzz Afraid of Success and what is next?

Often times we work very hard to produce a desired result and achieve greatness. We plan, organize, act and then look at our progress to make sure we are still aimed at our goal; only to pull up short of the finish line. Are we afraid of what will happen after we hit our goals? Are we able to continue progressing if we do not have a direction or course to take in our lives? I’m reminded of the story about the Apollo space shuttle and the mission to reach the Moon. The entire country was wrapped around the possibility of touching the Moon’s surface and returning a man back to Earth. This was on the mind of the country and NASA got to work. Everyone at NASA talked about what was happening and everyone worked harder so the mission would be a victory. The janitor mopped harder because he was doing it to help

Could You Afford to Live to 100? Here’s an interesting statistic: Over the past three decades, the centenarian population in the United States has grown about 66%, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a good chance of living to 100 — but the possibility may not be as remote as it once was. In any case, if you do plan to retire in your mid-60s, and you are in good health, you may well have two, or even three, decades ahead of you. To enjoy this time to the fullest — and to help prevent the possibility of outliving your financial resources — you will need to invest for income and growth throughout your retirement years. As a retiree, how much income do you need from your investments? There’s no one “right” percentage for everyone. Furthermore, you shouldn’t have to rely solely on your investment portfolio, because you may have other sources — such as Social Security and potentially your employer-sponsored retirement plan — from which to draw income. Nonetheless, your investments can play a big role in providing you with the income you’ll need during retirement. Many retirees depend on fixed-rate investments for a good portion of their retirement income — so it’s a real challenge when interest rates are low, as they have been for the past several years. Consequently, when you retire, you’ll certainly need to be aware of the interest-rate environment and the income you can expect from these investments. Longer-term fixed-rate vehicles may be tempting, as they typically offer higher rates than shorter-term ones, but these

the scientists and engineers do their job. The Engineers tirelessly worked to insure the safety of the astronauts who would share the glory. Everyone from top to bottom stepped up their game and put in more effort. We reached the Moon, and after everyone celebrated they wondered, what next? They had done something spectacular and did not have further direction for the future. Sometimes businesses set their goals too low. They plateau and stop growing because they don’t know what to do next. If you find yourself in this rut without direction, do some daydreaming. Brainstorm what it would be like if… what you would do if you had…

longer-term investments may have more price fluctuation and inflation risk than shorter-term investments. Ultimately, you’ll likely need a balance between short-, intermediate- and long-term fixed-income investments to provide for a portion of your income in retirement. While it’s important to invest for income, you can’t ignore the need for growth — because you won’t want to lose purchasing power to inflation. As you know, we’ve experienced quite mild inflation recently. But over time, even a low rate of inflation can seriously erode your purchasing power. To illustrate: If your current monthly costs are $3,000, they will be about $4,000 in 10 years with only a 3% annual inflation rate. And in 25 years at that same rate, your monthly costs will have more than doubled, to about $6,200. To help protect yourself against inflation risk, you should consider having at least some investments that offer growth potential, rather than only owning fixed-income vehicles. And some investment vehicles, such as dividend-paying stocks, can offer both growth potential and current income. In fact, some stocks have paid, and even increased, their dividends for many years in a row, giving you not just income, but rising income. (Keep in mind, though, that companies are not obligated to pay dividends, and can reduce or discontinue them at any time.) To determine the right mix of growth and income vehicles for your individual needs, consult with a financial advisor who is familiar with your retirement plans, your risk tolerance and your family situation. And it may well be a good idea to plan for a very long retirement. You may not live to be 100 — but it would be a good feeling to know that you could afford to do so. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

how you would act if you could only do… And then start to plan, organize and act towards achieving your new accomplishment. Set the bar high and you may just surprise yourself. With this, always continue to take your business Up 1 Level. Brian E. Walker, CEO, MBA, LUTCF, DTM

It is a highly effective method of treating pain and tissue damage by accelerating the healing process in areas of the body previously only visited by drugs or surgery. With our high power Laser therapy combined with our SuperLuminous LED therapy, the healing time

actions is set in motion causing cells to replicate. In human tissue the resulting photo-chemical reaction produces an increase in the cellular metabolism rate, causing an increase in the cells energy production, enzymatic reactions and endorphin release for faster pain relief. Laser Therapy increases cellular metabolism, improves blood and lymph circulation, provides anti-inflammatory and pain relief, helps to generate new and healthy cells and tissues and promotes and accelerates wound healing. The Laser light is applied to the injured area for a specific time, usually 5-8 minutes per treatment. The patient will not experience any pain during the treatment. You may not feel anything, while most patients

can often be reduced by one-third to one-half the usual time. Lasers actually accelerate Healing, rather than cover up the symptoms like medications do. We can safely stimulate natural healing and reducing pain, without side effects. Laser Therapy penetrates deeply into the body without tissue damage. Once delivered to the injured area, the laser light photon energy promotes the process of bio-stimulation of the cells. The positive effect of light bio-stimulation on human cells is similar to photosynthesis in plant cells whereby a chain of chemical re-

experience a feeling of energy or a slight warming stimulating effect. The treatment frequency is usually 3-5 times per week for about 8 – 20 treatment sessions depending on the injury. Most patients experience moderate to significant pain relieve after about 3-10 treatments. Of course, the longer you have had the problem, the longer it may take see relief. When other natural therapies are included, recovery time can be accelerated. For best results, we may combine our Laser Therapy with our SuperLuminous LED therapy to improve the effectiveness of treatment and

Another Inmate Found Dead in Southwest Detention Center

by C.J. Leger Concerns and questions surround the Southwest Detention Center in French Valley this month, as another inmate was found dead on August 21 inside of his cell. Investigations have been launched to determine the cause of the inmate’s death, but in the wake of this new scandal, many are remembering that in the past year, 13 other inmates have also died in the custody of authorities at Detention Centers in Riverside County. According to reports made by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, around 7:20 PM on Friday, August 21, authorities at the Detention Center were alerted about an unresponsive inmate. Personnel at the facility immediately contacted the medical staff on-site to administer

Page B 7

first aid compressions. However, the inmate shortly after, was pronounced dead before he could be transferred to a hospital. After the incident, the inmate’s body was believed to have been transferred to the local Coroner's Office where detectives of the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Unit opened a preliminary investigation. Authorities did not immediately determine the inmate’s cause of death or the mode. As stated before, since December 31, there have been at least 13 deaths within the confines of Detention Centers in Riverside County, two of which that we know of occurred in the Southwest Detention Center. In the spring, we reported on the death of Julio Negrete, an inmate at the Southwest Detention Center who was murdered by his cellmate and stuff under a bed bunk for hours before authorities check on the cell. Report showed that an altercation between both men had resulted in loud sounds coming from the wing, which were never investigated. Around the same time, 51-yearold James Dean Clifton was found dead in his cell after an apparent suicide. Dean reportedly hung

himself. Dean was also an inmate at the Southwest Detention Center. Reports showed that the most deaths occurred in Banning Jail, a facility that houses inmates with mental health disabilities. In the mental health wing, Robert Anthony Hearn, 69, was found dead in his cell within an apparent fatal head wound consistent with being bludgeoned. His cellmate was charged with his murder. Also dead at the Banning Jail was

George Gonzalez, 45, who died of a “medical emergency”. While foul play was not suspected in his death, authorities did not release any more information regarding the cause of Gonzalez’s death. Vincent Criscuolo also died in the Banning Jail in May. However, authorities did not release any information regarding his death either, but they did state that foul play was not suspected. Of the reported deaths of inmates in

Riverside County, the facilities with the most deaths appeared to be Banning Jail, Riverside Jail, and Indio Jail. Both Riverside Jail and Indio Jail have two reported deaths each. For now, authorities are asking for help in the resolution of the investigation regarding the death of the inmate at the Southwest Detention Center on August 21. Those with information about the incident can call the Sheriff’s Department at 951–955–2777 or 1-800-950-2444.

Low-Flow Toilets Required In California For All Home Renovations

From the Desk of Tony Falco,

The state of California passed a law that no more than 1.28gpf (gallons per flush) toilets can be sold in stores, i.e. Lowes, home depot, or home improvement stores. This is due to the recent drought in California. As the CEO and Certified Restorer it has been a concern of mine on how these toilets will affect our plumbing drain systems. Toilets in the early 1980’s were 5.0gpf, and then late 1990’s until recently were 3.5 gpf. Drain lines were designed to drop a foot after every 10ft of drain pipe. This was to carry the waste and water through the drain line ensuring it reaches the city sewer, by-passing any belly’s bends, or small root intrusions that may be in the line. As a plumber for over 25 years, the only thing going down the drain line should be waste and toilet paper. Feminine products and wipes are not meant for the drain system. Do not fall for the “flushable” marketing labels on the outside of the packages.

tor home or trailer). There are toilets that are power flush toilets, these toilets are great for pushing the waste down the drain. A power flush toilet is a pressure assisted tank that flushes waste at a higher velocity through the toilet trap and drain. If your old toilet needs to be replace, Accurate Leak Locators can install a power flush 1.28 gpf toilet.

Our waste and toilet paper alone already absorb the water from 3.5gpf, putting things down the line that aren’t designed for the drain line with 1.28 gallons will really cause a problem, meaning toilet overflow or sewer back up into the home. For homeowners and homeowner insurance companies, toilet bowl overflows or backed up drain lines will start to become more common over the next few months and/or year. The bill/law passed did not state how long

the stores are to only supply 1.28gpf toilet for, whether it is to continue until the drought is over or not. So as homeowners it is our job to regulate what is put Call our office to make an apdown the drain system. Automotive What Does it Mean to Flush the A/C System? Flushing must be performed when the system is contaminated or you suspect there is debris in the system from compressor failure. When a/c compressors fail, bad things can happen. The typical a/c compressor is built like a small reciprocating engine. They have cylinders, pistons, piston rings, valves, bearings, etc.. When a compressor fails it often sheds fragments of these internal components. This can happen all at once or slowly over time. Little bits of compressor can end up in your condenser, hose assemblies, orifice tube/ expansion valve, evaporator and accumulator/filter-drier. The photo below illustrates what you might find after a compressor failure. It was obvious we would need to flush the system after inspecting the debris on the orifice tube. What will happen when you replace a compressor and don't flush all of this foreign material out of the system? You can almost be

sure that this debris would circulate through your system and the cycle would repeat itself as your new compressor grinds to a halt. Flushing also removes excess oil from the system. If you suspect the system contains too much oil, flushing is a way to start fresh so you can establish the correct quantity of refrigerant oil in the system. Flushing is often performed by using a flush solvent and a flush gun. The flush gun is nothing more than a pressure rated canister that has a blow gun attached to it. Solvent is poured into the flush gun, and a compressed air source is attached to it. The compressed air forces the flush solvent through the various a/c components via the rubber tipped blow gun. Recently, aerosol flush solvents have been made available. These are aerosol cans that contain a flush solvent and some type of application tube. In either case, chemical flushing requires dry compressed air - or - nitrogen to effectively blow through and dry the components. Please Note: Most OEM's do not recommend system flushing. They prefer the use of filters, or special live flush procedures instead. When in doubt, consult with OEM service information on correct procedure. Some of the procedures listed here are generally only accepted by the aftermarket. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must always be worn while working with flush agents. Special precautions must be observed and adequate ventilation

must be provided. Be sure you read and understand manufaturers directions before using flush chemicals and tools.
