INSIDE HOME MODIFICATIONS FOR THE ELDERLY

According to the AARP nearly 90 percent of seniors desire to remain in their home as they age. This is often referred to as “aging in place.” Which seems like such a generic or sterile term for the basic right to remain in one’s home if at all possible. We all know of certain people whether they be relatives of acquaintances who require the care only an assisted living or specialized care facility can provide… Page B1

SPRING COMES EARLY TO MENIFEE, GREAT OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES AWAIT!

by C. J. Leger Spring is just around the corner and Menifee is ready to join in on the sunny fun. Unlike most years, this year has seen an erratic weather schedule, and with that came sporadic heavy rains that resulted in the early blooming of wildflowers along many trails. So grab your hiking gear and head

outside to experience everything this area has to offer. Make your first stop Diamond Valley Lake by Hemet; the wild poppies are sprouting vigorously, following the bout of heavy rain the area received, and miles of gorgeous colorful fields line the trails. Usually, the Metropolitan Water District's wildflower trail is opened up at the end of February, however, this year it was opened early and is ready to receive visitors. If you want to catch the poppies you should start heading to see them as the trail is only open throughout the blooming phase of the flowers, once they start to fade, the trail is closed. This will be a fun experience for families and it is fairly inexpensive to take part in. Parking will be set at $9.00, and per person, a hiking trail ticket will be $2.00; if you have children ages 5 and below, they can hike for free.

Details: 2615 Angler Avenue | Hemet (951) 926-7201 All around the city there are great deals to take advantage of. Currently the Riding Academy in Menifee is offering a $26 deal on Groupon for 2 horseback riding lessons, 60 minutes each. The Riding Academy a family owned establishment with ties to the city that go back for years; as trusted members of the community people are flocking to nab these deals, and already 200 reservations have been sold. Horseback riding is always a great alternative to sitting at home watching TV, but you’ll have to act fast as the deal is expiring in 2 days, afterwhich the price jumps to $80. Just make sure the riders are ages 9 and up and under 250 lb. Details: 30300 Garbani Road | Menifee, CA 92584 | (951) 3019272 Continuation on page A2

BREAKING NEWS

SPEAKER ESCORTED OUT OF CITY COUNCIL MEETING Many residents in the Riverside area may be familiar with Vivian Moreno, an avid blogger that focuses her time on bringing light, to what she refers to as, the corruption in Menifee and Riverside County. During a council meeting last week, Moreno was effectively escorted out of a city council meeting, after aggressively berating the city staff with her opinionated comments. Moreno took the opportunity to use the public comment portion of the City Council Meeting, to voice her concerns about her freedom of speech being silenced by Mayor Scott Mann, calling him a “bully” and directing her accusations towards the city staff as well. TEEN ESSAY WINNER SELECTED AS ARTIST OF THE MONTH By Arts Council Menifee Kacie Gammill is an accomplished writer, musician and artist and she is only 13. Each month Arts Council Menifee selects an artist to be honored, and for March the group decided to chose someone representing creative writing and literary arts. Last year, the Hans Christensen Middle School seventh-grader submitted an essay to Arts Council Menifee’s Literary Arts Division contest and was chosen as its top winner. Writing on a subject that many writers twice and three times her age would find difficult, Kacie’s maturity and introspective perspective made hers a stand out. “Although there are several conflicts in the world, I feel that awareness and corrective actions to fix these world-wide problems would benefit people and open their eyes to all that is taken for granted,” Kacie wrote in her introduction of “What I Would Do To Make the World a Better Place” essay. She focused on the issues of growth hormones, homelessness and starvation. Ka-

cie feels that society has contributed to these problems and should take responsibility in correcting them. Her suggestions for resolution are to set up a cattle farm that is “guaranteed to be hormone free, thus attracting conscious consumers and leading other cattle farms to raise hormone-free cattle.” She proposes a homeless shelter to be built in every city as “a place for society’s downtrodden to rise to personal and societal expectations, find a job, start a family and live with confidence.” To help eradicate starvation in the world, Kacie thinks that countries whose populations suffer from obesity should donate one quarter of their food supply to those dying from hunger. “Kacie was originally recognized for an essay on three things she would do to change the world but writing is not her true artistic passion,” said her mom, Katrina Gammill. “She draws, paints, but above all she is an excellent flautist.” Kacie has been playing the flute since fifth grade at Freedom Crest Elementary and is second chair for flute with the Hans Christensen Middle School Symphonic Band. “I always loved the beautiful texture of the sound over other instruments; it is very elegant,” she said. “I love the rich sounds in the higher octave.” Kacie, who said she is currently focusing more on music than other creative pursuits, performed six songs at Disney California Adventure Park last month alongside her band mates. “I’m definitely warming up to the public exposure,” Kacie said. She practices at home and school and said playing flute takes a lot of breath control. A melody instrument, much of the music composed for it is classical. Kacie has also taught herself to play piano and paints and draws as often as she can. “I mostly do oil paintings, though I have somewhat drifted away from that and at the moment am more interested in charcoal illustrations,” she said. Kacie lives in Menifee with her parents, Jim and Katrina Gammill and her sister, Jamie, 3. For more information please visit: www.artscouncilmenifee.org

Food & Fun 2 FAST & EASY DINNER

CASSEROLES FOR BUSY MOMS by C.J. Leger For moms on-the-go, making dinner can become a very cumbersome task, and most dinners recipes can take between an hour and an hour and a half; after which, the kids must be helped with homework, bathed and put to sleep. By the time we are done, it seems like the whole day has slipped by us and we haven't been able to get anything done. So, I've curated a few easy recipes for moms on the go that can help ease the hassle of dealing with dinner.

EASY RIGATONI LASAGNA CASSEROLE This recipe is one of my favorites and part of my personal recipe arsenal. You'll need the ingredients below: 1 box of rigatoni pasta 1 can or jar of your favorite pasta sauce 2 pound bag of mozzarella cheese 3 to 5 hot Italian sausage links Italian herbs (parsley, oregano, basil) For more flavor you can also include fresh chopped garlic and onions

Here's what to do: This is one of the easiest recipes you'll ever find online. Start with your sausage links, cut those up into bite-size pieces or 1 inch pieces, and cook them thoroughly in a sauté pan. In the meantime, have salted water boiling and throw in your rigatoni; cook until tender. Pour some olive oil into a saucepan and add your chopped garlic and onions. Sauté for about three minutes and the pour your pasta sauce into the pan along with your herbs and cook on low. When your sausages are done, add it to your pasta sauce and cook for another 10 minutes. Grab your casserole dish and pour a thin layer of pasta sauce and a few sausage chunks inside. By now your rigatoni should be done. Spoon a gracious layer of rigatoni on top of your layer of pasta sauce. Add another good layer of pasta sauce and sausage to evenly coat your rigatoni and follow with another layer of rigatoni and the rest of your sauce. Top off your casserole dish with as much mozzarella as you'd like, and bake in the oven for 45 minutes at 425°.

Menifee Buzz—www.menifeebuzz.com

CHICKEN SHEPHERD'S PIE This is another great recipe for my arsenal, and instead of using beef for a shepherds pie will be using chicken. You will need the following: 1 large chicken breast cubed 1 can of Campbell's cream of mushroom 1 small onion cut in half and sliced Frozen peas (as much as you prefer) Pinch of salt, pepper, wine vinegar, and paprika for marinade. 2 carrots sliced into wheels 1 packet of chicken gravy Instant mashed potatoes (use chart for 6 servings) Season chicken with 2 Tb of wine vinegar, salt, pepper, half of your onion and paprika. Reserve 3 Tb. of cream of mushroom. Cook mashed potatoes according to package instructions. In one sauce pan sauté half of your onion in olive oil for 2 minutes; add your can of cream of mushroom, chicken gravy packet, and approximately 1 1/2 cups of water. Stir and continue cooking. For more flavor you may add leeks, scallions, and shallots, and herbs such as parsley, basil, oregano, and 1 chicken bouillon cube. If sauce thickens too much you can always add a little bit more water. In another sauté pan, cook your chicken breast thoroughly with its marinade and reserved cream of mushroom. When thoroughly cooked, combine your chicken and your gravy mixture and later pour into your casserole dish. Top your casserole off with your mashed potatoes. Bake at 400 degrees for 20-30 minutes.

pet at the Academy Awards. Hernandez, who has been attending the red carpet spectacular for years, has had many ups and downs and a few very exciting incidents at the show, including an unfortunate battery death in 1992 when Barbara Streisand was walking down the isle. But even after this discouraging event, she continued to go alongside members of the club she founded called the Oscar Chatter fan club, and together they were privy to many ex-

ets for them. For the Menifee woman and her club, this came as a heartbreaking realization which brought them to think of other good times they've had meeting celebrities on the red carpet in the past. In 2011 the group had a brief encounter with George Clooney, who accidentally stumbled upon a disabled woman in a wheelchair; as an apology, Clooney was a real gentleman in asking one of the Oscar Chatter members for a piece of paper to sign an autograph with. These real-life encounters will no longer be a part of the groups activities, and this year the group spent the evening in their hotel room at the Hollywood Celebrity Hotel, which was not even a quarter of a mile away from the Dolby theater where celebrities were flocking to the red carpet.

Smith approached the group and asked to use their camera to take one of the world’s very first selfies of himself with the Oscar Chatter group behind him in the stands. The Academy, which has been providing the group with sideline bleacher seating for over 17 years, has made it clear that this is all a thing of the past as the Academy will no longer set aside Contact the Writer an allotment of tick- Inquiries@CJLeger.com

SUDDEN SPIKES IN PINHOLE LEAKS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA – ARTICLE I Over the last 15 years, pinhole leaks have become an increasing problem for home owners and insurance companies. Pin-hole leaks seem to occur in pockets that include some areas of Maryland, Washington, Florida, and Southern California. Although the exact cause is not fully determined the EPA and AWWA have discovered that some cases were generated from poor workmanship, defective materials, and chemicals used to treat water. Throughout the country home owners are filing complaints with the builders. Builders are then suing water districts while the heavy burden of repairs is falling upon the insurance companies. Investigators in Washington, D.C. have geared towards electrolysis as the sudden cause for many pin-hole leaks. Electrolysis or galvanic corrosion is a chemical reaction when two dissimilar metals come in contact with each other. This can cause deterioration or corrosion in both metals, thus triggering leaks. A perfect example would be a copper pipe touching a piece of rebar under the slab. Another type of electrolysis can be caused by a stray electrical current. The common practice of grounding electrical systems to copper pipes can cause currents to flow into pipes thus causing corrosion. Unfortunately, in some areas, one being Orange County, California, the cause of sudden pin-hole leaks has not been determined, but the effects of the leaks are felt everyday by homeowners and insurance companies. In the next two articles we will cover a few topics as possible reasons why pin-hole leaks are occurring in Southern California. These topics will touch on Workman ship and defective materials in copper pipes and the multitude of chemicals used to treat the waters in various water districts. HOME MODIFICATIONS FOR THE ELDERLY

According to the AARP nearly 90 percent of seniors desire to remain in their home as they age. This is often referred to as “aging in place.” Which seems like such a generic or sterile term for the basic right to remain in one’s home if at all possible. We all know of certain people whether they be relatives of acquaintances who require the care only an assisted living or specialized care facility can provide. However, beyond some extraordinary factor most homes can be modified to allow our aging population to remain home for a substantial part of not all of their life. The AARP noted that even if the elderly begin to require day-to-day assistance 82% of seniors preferred to remain home. A few modifications to a home can go a long way to assisting people to remain in their homes. The AARP identified a few housing features that are important in the later years. First, is the installation of non-slip surfaces especially the bathroom/ shower area. Another great location to install non-slip or anti-slip surface would be the entrance steps or front door. Second, the installation of grab bars around the house. When we think of installing grab bars we immediately think of the bathroom, but the front door or any area with stairs would be worth a look. Third, while you are installing grab-bars near the front door you will

want to ensure that access is easy from all entry points. You may want to consider removing any steps in favor of ramps with a gentle slope. Don’t forget about the entry way from the garage which typically has a small step but as we age a small step can turn into a larger issue. Fourth, this one may sound silly but consider changing the door knobs to lever action handles. Also, while your at is make sure the locking devices are easy to lock and easy to unlock in the event of an emergency. What is easy now make be hard for arthritic hands in a few years. One of the last easy changes will be to make all chairs seats 20” high. The last few modifications may requires a contractor but a once time expense to a contractor is less than the loss of control or the monthly cost to an assisted living facility. The AARP suggest raising the electrical outlets in a few keys areas around the house so it is not necessary to bend to plug items in. On the same token, it may be worth lowering or relocating a few light

switches to a more convenient location. Think how neat it would be if you could reach your light switch from your bed? How much safer would that be? If possible or if it is in your control it would be worth looking into widening the doorways in the event that a wheelchair or other mobility devices is ever required. Lastly, it may be worth investigating or purchasing an intercom or personal alert system. We all know the famous commercial but there are a few companies and even direct consumer products that perform a similar function that are worth taking a look. Basically, as we age we must make sure our home remains a safe and convenient place to live. Simple changes can make all the difference. Some of the aforementioned changes sound simple and maybe even sound unnecessary, but let’s not forget that falls are the leading cause of injury-related visits to the emergency room in the US and the primary cause of accidental deaths in people over 65.

MANAGING YOUR TAXES IN 2015 There’s one thing you can count on as we kick off a new year – changes to the tax code. While there are few major new laws affecting taxpayers in 2015, it is important to understand how any adjustments to tax rules or your income might affect your tax liability. It is a critical aspect of your overall financial plan and can help you avoid any surprises when you file your 2015 tax return next year. Be aware that new laws can be implemented during the year. Congress has the ability to adjust tax laws and even do so retroactively. The tax code in place at the start of 2015 could be altered before year’s end, with those changes being made effective for the whole year. Here are some important tax considerations for the New Year: GET HEALTH INSURANCE OR PAY The individual mandate under the Affordable Care Act that took effect January 1, 2014 requires most individuals to obtain a qualifying level of health insurance or be subject to a fee. In 2015, the fee has increased to the higher of: • 2% of your yearly household income (capped at a certain level); or • $325 per person ($162.50 for a child under 18), with a family maximum of $975. If your employer provides health coverage, you do not have to purchase additional insurance on your own. Those who don’t have employer coverage can review options available from the health insurance exchanges. Visit www.healthcare.gov for more information. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF TAX SAVINGS BY DEFERRING INCOME If you typically “max out” your workplace retirement plan contributions, you are able to adjust those deferral amounts to a higher level

in 2015. The elective deferral limit for employees has risen to $18,000, $500 more than in 2014. Those 50 and older can make an additional $6,000 in contributions ($500 more than 2014) to their 401(k), 403(b) or federal government Thrift Savings Plan. Remember that for every dollar of income you defer into your retirement plan on a pre-tax basis, you reduce your current tax liability. PAY ATTENTION TO A NEW LIMIT ON IRA ROLLOVERS IRA contribution limits remain the same for 2015, but there is an important rule change for IRAs. Now, tax laws allow only one rollover from an IRA to a different IRA in a 12-month period. The “one rollover per year” limit applies in circumstances where you withdraw money from an IRA, but then roll it to another IRA within 60 days to avoid any current tax or penalty consequences. Direct transfers from an IRA with one trustee to an IRA with another can happen as often as you wish. Unless it is absolutely necessary, you want to avoid taking IRA distributions prior to age 59-1/2 to eliminate the risk of incurring a penalty. It’s best to talk with a tax professional before doing an indirect rollover to make sure you understand all the rules. ACCOUNT FOR INFLATION IN TAX RATES AND YOUR INCOME Tax brackets are adjusted yearly for inflation. In 2015, the income thresholds for each bracket were raised by about 1.5%. The standard deduction amount (used if you don’t itemize deductions) and the personal exemption amount are also adjusted for inflation. It is important to be aware of how all of these factors might affect your tax liability. On the other side of the coin, if you receive a salary increase and/ or bonus in 2015, it could impact your tax bill. Work with your tax advisor to help determine if the amount of tax withheld from each paycheck is sufficient to avoid an under withholding penalty. KIMBERLY NIEBLA Kim has lived in Murrieta for the past thirteen years and graduated from Murrieta Valley High school. Fresh out of high school, Kim attended Menifee's local college, Mount San Jacinto for two years. She is currently in the process of transferring schools to earn her degree in Education and aspires to become an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher. As someone whose native tongue is not English, Kim understands the importance and value of language. Being that her first language was Spanish, she wants to focus on teaching English to native Spanish speakers. In her spare time she enjoys reading and watching movies. Kim previously worked at Mulligan Family Fun Center in Murrieta for five years. It was her first job right out of high school and it was such an enormous learning experience for her. Within a couple years she was able to work all areas of the park, including receptionist, which was her personal favorite. She was then promoted to trainer and Team Lead, where she carried out daily operational duties and worked closely with the managers to handle team members and guest services. Kim's skills and knowledge attained at Mulligan will guide her and prove to be helpful in her new position as office assistant. She is eager to learn more about the great city of Menifee through this opportunity and is thrilled to be working for the Menifee Valley Chamber of Commerce; she looks forward to the great experiences that will surely come with the job. Hello, my name is Yanik Gozlan from Xtreme Business Solutions and I write “Tech Talk”. My goal is to give tips and information on the latest gadgets or common issues you may have with your technology. I have been helping people solve their technology problems since 2002. TOP SOCIAL NETWORKING SITE FOR READERS AND BOOK LOVERS By C.J. Leger

working site, but it's a great place for readers to congregate and connect with each other. It has quite a few very good features and badges available for active users. LM uses badges as Xbox uses achievement points, for example, after your first 10 reviews you'll get a badge, and there are also badges is available for the amount of followers you gain and your activity on the site, including the challenges you complete. LeafMarks also has a very prestigious badge awarded to individuals who actively curate the LM book database called "Librarians". I was a lucky recipient of this badge and take a lot of pleasure in updating the LeafMarks book database for users. When I say that LM is primitive, I only mean that in a sense where the book database isn't as updated as the other two mentioned above. However, it is a complete social networking site with good navigation and resources for readers. You can import your goodreads library so that you don't have to start all over again, and you can mark the progress of your books, review books and interact with other users.

If you're a reader like me then you know that regular social networking sites just aren't as satisfying to us, as would be, a social networking site solely dedicated to readers and booklovers. I did quite a bit of research (and joined most of them) and curated a list of top social networking sites for readers dedicated to the love of books and interactions between other avid readers.

GoodReads At the top of my list I always have good reads, because it's an old favorite and it really is centered upon the largest online book database that a social networking site has to offer. Many other social networking sites don't have as vast of the book database because they relatively new and they're still working on curating their list. On goodreads users can list all of the books that they've read, rearrange shelves to include certain genres, what they're currently reading, and what they plan to read in the future. Book reviews are the center of goodreads; many of its users not only rate their books but also include very detailed reviews. One of the features I like most about this particular site is that it allows you to notify other readers of whether or not your review includes spoilers. Goodreads also allows you to link your Amazon profile so that you can link your were Amazon book purchases, reads, and reviews to your goodreads profile, which makes it easier to stay up to date with your followers and friends. I personally think that one of the things that sets goodreads aside from other sites is the fact that it's one of the only places where readers can actually connect with authors on a singular platform. Authors are given a special privilege to have a blog with in their goodreads profile, which readers can follow and become a fan of their favorite authors And stay up to date with their projects. Other features include: Marking the progress of your reads by page or percentage Linking to Twitter or Facebook to publicize updates Book clubs and challenges to join Widgets for your personal blog

cause it lacks some of the features that goodreads offers, however, it's a very good runner up because it has one of the most important features that the goodreads does not offer, and that's a blog. So, if you're an avid reader and book reviewer, and you like to write on your spare time, you can join BookLikes and do both with a built in blogging system within your profile. On your dashboard, you will be able to update your reading list, you're reading selections, reviews and ratings and status updates. You'll also be able to write new blogs and sorcery them back to either your personal blog or any other website you've drawn from for inspiration. Another key features that BookLikes has that goodreads does not have, is the linking to all of your social networking profiles and personal website on the sidebar of your blog. Goodreads usually only lets you link to your main site, whether that is your blog, twitter, or Facebook. But BL allows you to list all of your associations from one place.

BookLikes The second network on my list is going to be BookLikes, it's only second be-

Other features include: • Widgets for your BL blog that link back to goodreads • Widgets for your BL blog that link back to your Twitter feed • Publicizing to Twitter or Facebook

• • • •

LeafMarks LeaveMarks is a relatively primitive net-

Other features include: • Buttons to your profile for your personal blog or website • Badges for your LeafMarks profile, which can also be placed on your personal blog or website • Librarian Status for active users serious about managing the LM database • Status updates • Inclusion of all your affiliated social networking links and websites on your profile page.

City SPEAKER ESCORTED OUT OF CITY COUNCIL MEETING By C. J. Leger Check out the Video by visiting our website: www.menifeebuzz.com Many residents in the Riverside area may be familiar with Vivian Moreno, an avid blogger that focuses her time on bringing light, to what she refers to as, the corruption in Menifee and Riverside County. Once she gained control of the microphone, her voice became louder and her attitude more irate; she first engaged in a sparring match with City Attorney Jeff Melching, before directing her attention towards Mayor Scott Mann. Moreno introduced herself to the city staff, and quickly directed them to read the ruling of Baka versus Moreno Valley Unified School District,

Menifee Buzz—www.menifeebuzz.com which was referring to the school district policy on freedom of speech at school board meetings. Almost immediately after, she directly attacked the mayor’s ethics stating, “There is nothing that incenses me more than a mayor that is a bully!” It was about this time that the situation became disorderly, and members of the city staff proceeded to ask Mareno to proceed with a more orderly and respectful manner of speaking. Moreno, who owns the blog “Thirty Miles of Corruption”, a site dedicated to voicing her views on the city’s corruption and inefficiencies, continued to say, “And Mr. Scott Mann you better learn decorum in your building right here”, addressing him directly, which according to attorney Melching, goes against the council’s decorum policy that was put into place in 2008. This was when Moreno was advised to redirect her words towards the entire council rather than a specific member, and to be more orderly in her address. Moreno responded with, “If any one of you stop me, there will be a lawsuit, a personal lawsuit, filed against Mayor Scott Mann.” The altercation continued with Melching explaining the city council’s decorum policy as stated below: “The decorum policy says in paragraph four that ... people shall not act in a disorderly manner, or engage in conduct that disrupts, disturbs or otherwise impedes the orderly conduct of a city council meeting,” with the situation becoming more offensive to the rest of the audience and the city Council body, and the mayor ordering a Riverside County deputy to escort Moreno off of the premises and out of Council chambers, prior to offering her one last chance to reevaluate her statement and proceed with a more orderly address.

Moreno refused stating, “You will have the biggest lawsuit you have ever seen”, before being escorted out alongside her husband Javier, who was filming the entire incident. Prior to 2010, the Moreno family administrated a day spa located in the Riverside downtown mall; however the couple was evicted from the property due to a rent dispute with the city government, which owned the building in which the spa was located. The Morenos are known for monitoring the activities of the local government and in 2012 they filed a lawsuit against the city, alleging that the transfer of money from the Riverside water utility to the city’s general fund, was perceived as illegal under state Prop. 218. According to the Morenos, this had been going on for a significant period of time, and the lawsuit ultimately ended in a settlement, in which the city agreed to pay $10 million back to the water fund, and further transfers of funds would require voter approval. Melching elaborated on the City Council’s decorum policy stating, “To reference you by name is one thing,” said Melching. “To try and engage in a dialogue -from that place with you about your personal behavior -- is not inside the scope of the decorum policy.” According to Mayor Scott man, councilmembers did discuss the incident after it had occurred, in order to discuss whether or not the Moreno’s rights were in fact violated in regards to her freedom of speech. They ultimately ruled on the conclusion that her rights had not been violated, and that the decorum policy had to be upheld as well. Man stated his personal feelings about the situation, “I actually feel bad about having to gavel her out of the meeting. I’ve never had to do that before.” The events of February 5 were nothing compared to the atmosphere on February 19 at the city Council meeting, but in a good way. The entire meeting transpired relatively uneventful, but Vivian Murano did return to address the council and had a few things to say. After the spark of insults and threats of being escorted out, Vivian Moreno’s last appearance at the city council meeting on February 5, resulted in a backlash of media coverage and managed to get the council to reevaluate the events to determine whether or not Mrs. Moreno’s civil rights had been violated when she was told to change her manner of addressing the council. On February 19 she returned and calmly delivered her views on the constitution, the rights of the citizens of Riverside and Mayor Scott Mann,

who she referred to as a “bully” on February 5, which is what started the entire escapade. This time, Moreno successfully delivered her entire speech in less than three minutes, without altercations or confrontations with the mayor or the city attorney, Jeff Melching. Her comments, however, were still as condemning as before. Moreno’s comments included directly addressing the mayor to say that, “You use your sheriff as a king would use his army”. She concluded her statement with, “You are not a king. You are a mayor, a Son of the American Revolution, in the United States of America. Where freedom of speech is king.” Unlike the last meeting, this time the audience applauded Moreno and she calmly walked back to her seat. The altercation between Mayor Scott Mann and Moreno transpired, because, according to Jeff Melching, engaging a council member directly was against the council’s decorum policy, which he further enforced by stating that Moreno’s tone of voice was disorderly. It is fair to state that Moreno’s tone became aggressive because she was interrupted repeatedly to be told that she could not directly speak to the mayor and call him a “bully”. After the events of the February 5th council meeting, many journalists and news institutions went on to report about the events, calling into question the city council’s “imaginary” decorum policy, stating that it was designed to keep all citizens from being able to address negative issues during meetings, even though technically, that’s what these meetings are for. In the latest meeting, Moreno addressed the mayor directly and no interruption was made on the part of city council; which technically, according to the decorum policy, should have been the case. During this meeting, Moreno’s husband was once again recording the exchange, and was briefly engaged by a Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department official and told to be seated, a request which he quietly honored without incident. Both the public speakers and city council members behaved civilly and an atmosphere of respect for one another, even if differing on views, was the present during the meeting. The Morenos, who own the blog ThirtyMilesOfCurruption.com have been avid activists against governmental corruption and have lately focused their energy to issues in Menifee, starting with an appearance at a land use and business registration workshop on January 26th. RADIOSHACK TO CLOSE 5 STORES IN MENIFEE/RIVERSIDE AREA By. C. J. Leger RadioShack, once a prominent electronic retailer in the nation, has been suffering from the economic downfall in the recent years. As a result, the retailer has been forced to close a large portion of their stores across the nation, now, RadioShack plans to close at least five locations in the Riverside area, one of which including a Menifee-based store. According to a list of the retailer made public on Monday, the closings are inpart a result of the bankruptcy filing the RadioShack made in the previous years. Nearly 1,800 outlets will be scheduled for closing throughout the 50 states, leaving to 2,200 RadioShack stores which the company has agreed to sell. The new owners of these RadioShack stores will be the giant wireless carrier, Sprint, and some of the stores were sold to a an affiliate of Standard General, a hedge fund reported to be the company’s biggest investor. The bankruptcy also although recently confirmed, has been expected by individuals in the industry for months. RadioShack has experienced losses in the past 11 out of 12 quarters. According to RadioShack, sprint is scheduled to occupy at least one third of each store, selling their wireless devices and service. The new acquisitions and sales, under the protection of the U.S. bankruptcy laws, will require the approval of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware. The court documents presented by RadioShack, show that the company is in more debt, then they have in assets. Altogether, RadioShack has approximately 21,000 employees and $1.2 billion in assets. However, their debts sum up to $1.39 billion.

According to RadioShack, they have come to an agreement with a lender group, DW partners, which will provide them with a $285 million loan to help them operate during their bankruptcy. Stores all across California have been scheduled to close, five of which in the Riverside area. These locations are: Hemet Page Plaza, 1135 S. Sanderson Ave., Suite D Menifee Countryside Marketplace, 30076 Haun Road, Suite 230 1180 Hamner Ave., Norco Westfield Palm Desert mall, 72840 Highway 111 3844 La Sierra Ave., Riverside According to the same court documents, the retailer did try to avoid bankruptcy in the past 12 months; they set in motion a plan that allow them to close 400 stores and reduce their workforce by 19%. The company also changed its logo, reorganized their store locations to reduce clutter, and made an attempt to drive in more tech-savvy customers with “concept stores”, which included interactive displays. In the final months, RadioShack did plan on scheduling more store closures, however, it's lenders refused to allow the plan unless the retailer prepaid a large portion of their debt and agreed to some of their demands. Finding a person’s potential: Motivation leads individuals to greatness and gives them the ability to accomplish laughable goals and unbelievable accomplishments. The trick is finding out what type of motivation is needed to get someone to believe in themselves. Everyone learns and listens differently, match the needs and style and you can have monumental success. Over the years, I’ve hired many people; some were good, some were not so good but all had some motivation other than the primary needs of food and shelter. Most did want money but the successful ones strived for a higher form of pay then their check. Filling a sense of belonging, having a partnership and flexibility within the job kept most coming back to work on Monday.

Buzz Spotlight KELLER'S JEWELERS CONTINUES by C. J. Leger Gerda and Peter Keller have been providing Sun City residents with a trustworthy relationship and beautifully crafted jewelry since 1965 when the city was still relatively new. Today, Keller’s Jewelers is still one of the only family-run businesses in the area, and their children, Ralf and Susan Keller Stewart, are still running the location according to their father, Peter Keller’s, ethics and rule-of-thumb, “happy customers are loyal customers”. Although Peter died in 2002, the business is still well-alive in the minds of the residents of Sun City, who are quick to comment on the gorgeous selection of diamond earrings, wedding sets, and even custom designed jewelry that the Kellers offer in their establishment. Keller’s Jewelers’ reputation has never faltered, and they never make false promises; according to Ralf, he strives to keep the trade going in-house and often says “If I can’t do it here, we don’t do it”.

FAMILY-OWNED TRADITION SINCE 1965

Both Ralf and his sister Susan completed their trade certification at the Gemological Institute of America, and both believe that the secret to the longevity of their business relies on the fact that they are honest with their customers, which is now comprised of the third-generation of the very first patrons of this establishment over 46 years ago. Often they get young people and couples who tell them that Keller’s Jewelers were their parents’ preferred choice for jewelry and that that’s where their loyalty comes from. By trade profession, Peter Keller, the family’s patriarch, was a watchmaker who honed his skills in Germany and Switzerland. Before arriving in America in 1963, two years before they opened up Keller’s Jewelers; the married couple lived in South Africa for six years, and then in Hemet before finally setting in Menifee, where according to them, the city’s unique abundance of family unity has been a pillar in the structure of their success. Since 1980, the Kellers have owned Keller

Platz, the shopping center on the corner of McCall Blvd, to which they attributed “plaza’s” German translation “Platz”. As a testament to the area’s family-first atmosphere, when the plaza’s center was built by Peter and Ralf’s own hands in the 80’s, members of the community and families assisted in the project. The community has grown around their establishment and yet the Kellers remain humble and continue their in-house traditions of offering spectacular deals and

products to their customers who have grown to love them. Currently, Keller’s Jewelers offer unbeatable deals including a diamond upgrade with any Red Box Diamond purchase; free cleaning for life on items purchased there; and custom CAD design. Keller’s Jewelers have gorgeous selections Gifts and a full line of diamond jewelry, sterling silver pieces and pigmented gems. Their line includes Baltic Amber jewelry and many more options for that special someone. The Kellers will be greeting people with a smile, hopefully, for many years to come. Ralf says, we still do all facets of jewelry repair, designing, ring sizing... People know we're honest. We're going to tell you how it is, because we want people to come back.". LANCASTER MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING MENIFEE CAR WASH MANAGER WILL STAND TRIAL

by C. J. Leger Jeremy Joseph Robbins, 38, has just learned that he is facing 15 years to life in prison, if he is convicted of the murder of Wesley Uyekawa, A 60-yearold man who was the manager of a car wash in Menefee. According to reports, the killing occurred after Robbins, a Lancaster resident, mistakenly thought that Uyekawa had stolen from him. Uyekawa and Robbins were not acquainted with one another, and the incident occurred at a self-service car wash and storage facility that Wesley managed; he also lived on-site. On the afternoon of March 22 of 2014, Robbins reportedly went to the self-service car wash near interstate 215 and McCall Boulevard to wash his sedan. While he was vacuuming his vehicle, he hung some of his dry cleaning on a chain-link fence nearby, driving away without taking the articles of clothing with him. According to Sheriff ’s Sgt. Ken Thrum, who testified in court, Robbins returned to the self-service car wash after 9 am the following morning, to

retrieve the items he had forgotten. However, after unsuccessfully finding them, the altercation began with Uyekawa. He proceeded to ask a 60-year-old

worker if he knew what had become of his clothing, but after Wesley told him that he did not know, Robbins flew into a rage and left, returning again after 20 minutes to confront Uyekawa outside of the car wash office. According to Sgt. Thrum’s testimony, Robbins accused Uyekawa of stealing his dry cleaning. The 60-year-old man tried to walk away into his office but Robbins did not allow him to and proceeded to punch him in the face. Reports show that Uyekawa fell to the ground and grasp onto the defendant’s leg, who then kicked him and stomped on his abdomen. Last Friday, the hour-long preliminary hearing which took place in the Riverside Hall of Justice, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Mac Fisher decided that there was justifiable evidence to take the case to trial and scheduled an arraignment hearing for February 24th for the crime of second degree murder. Court documents show that the 60-year-old man called 911 and told the officers who arrived at the scene of

the altercation, and he was promptly transported to Menifee Valley Medical Center with complaints of extreme abdominal pain. Uyekawa was released from the hospital that same day, however, on the morning of March 24, one of his coworkers found him dead on the floor of his on-site apartment. The autopsy report states that the man suffered from the rupture of his small intestine, which caused him to die of blood poisoning. Surveillance cameras at the car wash made it easy for investigators to identify Robbins of the culprit, and he was later arrested, at his address of 44223 Gillan Avenue in Lancaster, the following week. The same security camera also captured another car wash customer taking Robbins’ dry cleaning. Robbins, who is in town in Menifee visiting his sister, is currently held on a $1 million bail.

6 WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR METABOLISM By Gonzalo Perez Helguero CPT, CNC Fitness & Nutrition Expert Founder/CEO TRIM Fitness We, at the TRIM Fitness HQ in Menifee, are in the middle of our 6 week 2015 Transformation Challenge and not a day goes by without someone asking me: "Gonzalo, How Do I Increase My Metabolism?" Well, I wish I could give you the name of a magic pill, easy answer, or wonder juice regarding this matter. But, since I love educating and doing things the right way, I will give you the long “WORK” version in this article. 6 Ways to Increase Your Metabolism 1) First we MUST understand what metabolism is. In the simplest terms, metabolism is the rate at which your body burns calories. A faster metabolism will enable you to lose more body weight than a person with the same activity level, diet, and weight. 2) Determine what is influencing your metabolism. There are some factors that you can control and change, and some factors that you can't. Age - Metabolic rate decreases 5% each decade, after the age of 40 , partly because of decreased muscle mass. (Hence the importance of weight training) Gender - Men generally burn calories more quickly than women because they have more muscle tissue. Heredity - You can inherit your metabolic rate from previous generations. Thyroid disorder - Hypothyroidism (under-active thyroid gland) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland) can slow down or speed up metabolism, but only 3% and .3% of the population have hypo- and hyperthyroidism respectively. (Many people like to use that card. I usually tell them it's not a thyroid problem, it's a mouth problem) Quality of your weight - Have you ever had a muscle cramp? OK Now let me ask you another question? HAVE YOU EVER HAD A FAT CRAMP? I didn't think so. Muscle is a contractile tissue, therefore it's metabolically active and burns

calories. FAT DOES NOT. 3) Eat small, frequent meals. Extending the time between meals makes your body go into "starvation mode," which decreases your metabolism as a means to conserve energy and prevent starvation. While some people are able to lose weight through intermittent fasting, most people generally eat less overall when they eat small, frequent meals. I HONESTLY THINK THAT THE PROBLEM IN TODAY'S SOCIETY IS BEING SO BUSY DURING THE DAY AND NOT EATING OR UNDER EATING WHICH LEADS TO OVER EATING LATER IN THE EVENING. 4) Boost metabolism temporarily with aerobic exercise. Different activities burn different quantities of calories, but the important thing is to raise your heart rate and sustain the activity for approximately thirty minutes. I LIKE TO REFER TO AEROBIC ACTIVITY AS "SHORT TERM INVESTMENT" 5) Boost metabolism in the long run with weight training. Muscle burns more calories than fat does (73 more calories per kilogram per day, to be exact)so the more muscle you build, the higher resting your metabolic rate (RMR) will be. IT'S KINDA LIKE HAVING A CAR WITH A BIGGER ENGINE. THE BIGGER THE ENGINE THE MORE FUEL IT BURNS. Every muscle cell that you gain is like a little factory that constantly burns calories for you, even while you sleep, and revs up when you exercise. This is the only way to increase RMR, which accounts for 60 to 70 percent of the calories you burn daily. I LIKE TO REFER TO RESISTANCE (WEIGHT) TRAINING AS "LONG TERM INVESTMENT"

SHOULD YOU USE AS ASSISTIVE DEVICE TO WALK? By John Walker, This is a very difficult question to answer for some…most of us want everything to remain status quo and not be realistic about the aging process or when we need to protect a joint/bone in our body. We also have what we call pride… the idea of using an assistive device is beneath my dignity! There are many types of assistive devices that are available…walkers, crutches, canes, etc. The purpose of an assistive device is to unload/protect a body part, to allow for a normal walking pattern, and to insure you get from point A to B safely. After an injury or surgery, the physician may indicate an extremity to be non weight bearing. This will allow the bone or injured body part to heal properly. By placing too much body weight on an injury, this not only disturbs the healing process but can also increase

swelling. I have had some patients say they can walk without using an assistive device…but there gait pattern is poor and there is a significant limp during ambulation. This gait pattern may create bad habits, cause substitution and overloading of other body parts, and could inhibit the healing process. Crutches are generally reserved for the younger patient with good upper extremity strength and balance. Canes are generally used for minimal unloading of an extremity and to improve overall balance. Canes are used in the opposite hand of the effected extremity; A walker is generally used for maximum unloading and balance…I personally like walkers with wheels in the front and gliders in the back so one can strive for a normal walking pattern. On steps & stairs, the uninvolved extremity leads up and the involved extremity leads down. If you are unsteady on your feet or if you are limping during ambulation, I would definitely recommend using an assistive device. Speak with your physician and see your physical therapist for their recommendation. John Walker, DPT. MOMT Walker Physical Therapy, Inc.

6) Consume more protein. There are no "fat-burning" foods. You might've heard that certain foods (e.g. celery and grapefruit) increase metabolic rate, but it's just a myth. However, it has been proven that all foods do have what is called the thermic effect. Foods with protein have a 30% thermic effect, and are the most thermal of all foods. (Thermic means it heats up your body, hence increasing your metabolism. So that means if you eat a 100 calorie portion of lean meat, 30 calories from the food are required to break down the fibers in the protein and to properly digest it. (SWEEEEEEEET) Foods with higher amounts of fiber also have a high thermic effect. THIS IS WHY I RECOMMEND A LEAN PROTEIN EVERY 2-3 HOURS AND NO LIMIT ON THE AMOUNT OF GREEN FIBROUS VEGGIES Conclusion: Lift weights (long term investment), do moderate cardio (short term investment), consume a lean source of protein every

2-3 hours (to increase thermic effect), eat plenty of green fibrous veggies to make you feel full and also for their "thermic effect" BONUS: Sleep plays a vital role in regulating metabolism and appetite. When sleep deprived, the metabolic system will be out of balance. FACT: As sleep time decreased over time from the 1950s to 2000s from about 8.5 hours to 6.5 hours, there has been an increase in the prevalence of obesity from about 10% to about 23% I hope you find this article helpful and you move towards changing your view of living a healthier lifestyle for the better for your own sake and that of those around you. By the way, due to high demand, I’m really excited to announce the launch of the next round of my ”2015 Transformation Challenge”. CALIFORNIA WOMAN'S EFFORT TO FUND AIDS RESEARCH By C. J. Leger The fight to find a cure for HIV and AIDS is ongoing, and with research costing hundreds of millions of dollars, kind Samaritans have found it in their hearts to do their part to find a cure. Around the country, walks, runs, and benefit galas have been orchestrated by people just like you and I, who have succeeded in raising much needed funds for this cause; Susan Maya, is one of them. Last year Susan took part in her first Aids Life Cycle (ALC) ride, and was astounded by the financial impact she made on the research front, having successfully funded 30 days of AIDS research with her contribution. The long training hours and rigorous routines are all worth it, she says, and she makes it a point to mention that she personally enjoys the time she spends with the other riders, who just like her, are making a sacrifice of their time and energy for a very good cause. This year, Sue plans on raising her funding goal; currently set at $5,000, her contribution, if funded, will be enough to fund 365 days of laboratory procedures for 18 patients with AIDS. Her funding campaign can be viewed here, and as of February 10, has reached 5% of its goal, with $250 raised. Other members of Susan’s cycling team, Team OC, have also geared up for the effort. Team captain Dean Guzman, has already raised $210 towards his goal of $10,000. Among the team of 26 individuals are John Medina and Gary Graves who have raised $5,585 and $4160 respectively, of their $10,000 goal. All readers and Riverside residents are encouraged to donate to this wonderful and effective cause, which truly brings a helping hand to people suffering from AIDS and sponsors their care and the research for a cure. Susan is genuinely affected by the generosity and involvement of her fellow riders

and was quoted as saying, “I really love riding my bike enjoying the beauty of our state, the cities and back roads and seeing all the people that take the time to cheer us on from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Some of them hold signs with names of loved ones who have died or live with this disease day to day, and it just gives us a little reminder of why we are riding those 7 days.” According to Susan, there is even a town on the path that has students who stay in school an extra 7 days just to cheer them on as they go by. Susan’s story is an exemplary one of human spirit and dedication to one’s goals. She represents millions of individuals suffering from AIDS by raising money and awareness for their treatment and hopes you will represent them as well. We leave you with a message from Susan: “If you donate you are making a difference in someone’s life and I’m making a difference in someone’s life by representing you out there on my bike. So, if you can, please make a donation. Any amount will help me reach my goal, and if you know of others that would like to donate, please feel free to pass this along to them. Thank you again!” Susan Maya’s Contribution Page Donate to Susan’s Fund Here Alternately, those interested in donating via mail, can download a donation form here, and mail it to: AIDS/LifeCycle Dept. 9383 Los Angeles, CA 90084-9383 FAX: (323) 308-4083 All donations are tax deductible via the Tax ID: 95-3567895 Contact Donor Services with questions at (323) 860-7375 or pledge_la@aidslifecycle.org
