Letter From The Founder

The past couple of years have been full of incredible experiences with friends and business associates from the Middle East and North African region which led to the inception of MENA in Africa Magazine. In the words of a dear Palestinian friend who I have had many brilliant conversations with: “It is time we told our own stories in our own words as Africans and Arabs.”

The history between our two regions is estimated to have begun in the 7th Century. Fast forward to today, the 21st Century and we have much to learn from each other now more than ever. An example of how deeply rooted Arab influence is in Africa is Swahili, a language widely spoken by more that 200 million people. The language has about 30% Arabic loan words.

We as Africans and Arabs are doing (and have done) incredible things. However, we have not had a single platform where we can showcase these achievements together. One of my favorite articles in this inaugural magazine is Salwa’s story of her journey bringing a taste of Morocco to East Africa. We have written about twenty MENA countries in this issue and we hope that each piece will be as informative and interesting to you as it was to us.

Culture, Business, Lifestyle and Diplomacy are our main areas of interest as we begin this journey. This first issue covers the highlights of 2023 and 2024 so far within our two regions, after which it will be our honor to update you monthly. We hope that you can join us as we finally give a voice to our people in MENA and Africa.

A Brief History Of

Embroidery: Palestinian Tatreez

On 15th December 2021, and during the 16th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held virtually from UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, the art of embroidery in Palestine, practices, skills, knowledge and rituals were added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Handmade Palestine, an initiative supporting 32 Palestinian artisans by bringing Palestinian handicrafts to the world through their store, shared with us about the Palestinian Tatreez.

The art of Palestinian embroidery, known as Tatreez, has always been an integral aspect of Palestinian heritage, uniquely expressing the vibrant identity of Palestinians. Tatreez is a beautiful and intricate embroidery art form requiring an exceptional amount of patience, dedication, and precision. Tatreez delights and fascinates, but is also deeply rich and symbolic and tells the colorful stories of Palestine, both ancient and evolving.

Tatreez is an Arabic word, representing an embroidery style that is uniquely Palestinian and is traditionally known as Fallahi. “Fallah means farmer, village worker, tiller of the soil. The cross-stitch assumed the name fallahi because it was the stitch embroidered by the fallaha Palestinian farm woman.” - Tania Tamari Nasir and Widad Kawar, Palestinian Embroidery | Traditional Fallahi Cross Stitch.

In the early origin of tatreez, the landscape was a major source of inspiration for Palestinian women in designing many patterns and motifs. This speaks to the variation in style that was common to see among all of the different tatreez expressions that were particular to each Palestinian village. These variations initially served as identifiers for Palestinian women, representing social status and the area of Palestine they lived in based on the style of tatreez they wore.

For example, the style of tatreez traditional to Gaza is known for its repetition of the cypress tree motif, usually in combination of both upright and upside down trees, while Ramallah is known for its rich and continuous use of bright and deep red thread color. Most villages integrated some of the same motifs into their tatreez with variations that were both slight, yet discernible.

Tatreez is a knowledge that is traditionally passed from mother to daughter as a means of preserving heritage. Our handmade tatreez collection is primarily stitched by women artisans in Gaza cooperatives and has become a very important source of income generation in areas of Palestine where women don’t have other income opportunities.

A Summary of Saudi Africa Relations

Saudi Arabia Relations

Saudi-African relations go back for decades, converging on many political, economic and cultural issues. In order to boost relations between the Kingdom and African countries, both of geopolitical importance, 16 joint committees, two coordinating councils and seven business councils have been established, and more than 250 cooperation agreements in political, economic and development fields were signed.

Due to the Kingdom’s pivotal role in advancing development and economy in African countries and the keenness of the Prime Minister to support the economy of the African continent, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) has launched several projects and investment activities in African countries in the sectors of energy, mining, communications, food, and others with a total of SAR 15 billion. These projects reflect HRH the Crown Prince’s keenness on the importance of continuing to search for new opportunities for investment in the African continent, whether directly or indirectly.

The Kingdom’s great interest in the future of the African continent and its countries and peoples emerged through the participation of HRH the Crown Prince in the summit to address the challenge of Africa’s funding shortfall held in Paris 2021.

The Kingdom and African countries have economic relations. The volume of trade exchange between the two sides amounted to SAR 74.735 billion, of which exports represented SAR 53.071 billion, including metal products, plastics and their manufacturers, fertilizers, organic chemical products, and inorganic chemical products. Imports amounted to SAR 21.664 billion. It included metal products, copper and articles, live animals, fruits, coffee, tea and spices.

Due to the Kingdom’s special interest in the African continent, its total investments in Africa during the last ten years amounted to SAR 49.5 billion. The number of Saudi companies operating there reached 47 businesses working in the fields of renewable energy, food and beverages, business services, financial services, and consumer products.

In support of African countries, the efforts exerted by the Prime Minister during the Kingdom’s presidency of the G20 in 2020 contributed to the launch of the G20 Debt Service Suspension Initiative and G20 Common Framework for Debt Treatments. These two initiatives provided urgent liquidity to 73 of the poorest countries, including 38 African countries that received more than $5 billion.

Based on the Kingdom’s active and pioneering role in achieving comprehensive development sustainability, the Saudi Fund for Development’s support to the continent of Africa constituted about 57.06% of its total development activity worldwide. It has supported 46 developing countries in Africa by financing 413 development projects and programs to support the development sectors through soft development loans with a total value of about SAR 40113.81 million.

The development sectors financed by the SFD in the beneficiary countries covered transport and communications, (roads, seaports, railways and airports), social infrastructure, (education, health, water and sanitation, housing and urban development), agriculture, energy, industry and mining, in addition to international organizations.

Stemming from its humanitarian role, the value of Saudi aid provided to 54 countries in the African continent, according to the statistics of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief), amounted to $45,333,508,756. The number of implemented projects reached 1884 projects, represented in development, voluntary humanitarian assistance, charitable, and general humanitarian assistance.

The Saudi assistance included education, health, food and agricultural security, water and environmental sanitation, nutrition, logistics, shelter and non-food items, safety and protection, early recovery, support and coordination of humanitarian operations, and in multiple sectors.

The assistance was represented in the sectors of industry, mining and mineral resources,

34 | Mena In Africa

support for public programs, support for budgets, transport and storage, agriculture, forestry and fish, water and environmental sanitation, energy, education, and health, in addition to many other sectors.

The KSrelief also provided $100 million to the Lives and Livelihoods Fund, which operates in Uganda, Senegal, Sudan, Somalia, Mozambique, Niger, Benin, Burkina Faso, Chad, Togo, Comoros, Djibouti, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Nigeria, Guinea, Mauritania and Morocco.

Out of concern for cultural relations between both sides, and based on statistics from the Ministry of Education, the number of Saudi male and female students on scholarship studying in African universities has reached 3,956. Twenty-three Saudi government universities are hosting 2,795 male and female students from 49 African countries.

In confirmation of the close relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and African countries, several African nations supported the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s request to host the Expo in Riyadh in 2030.

To mitigate the effects of climate change and curb the most influential sources of gas emissions into the atmosphere, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince launched several initiatives, including the Green Middle East Initiative. The initiative encompasses multiple African countries and aims to plant over 50 billion trees and reduce more than 10% of global carbon emissions.

The Kingdom contributes to reducing unemployment and poverty rates, while reinforcing the partnership of the Kingdom and Arab countries with African nations. Hosting the Saudi-African Summits underscored the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and HRH Crown Prince’s commitment to enhancing the Kingdom’s international partnerships in a manner that serves its political, economic, and development goals, thus realizing the objectives of Vision 2030.

The Kingdom seeks to bolster relations with African countries, expanding them to broader horizons, and establishing a fruitful partnership across various political, economic, and developmental domains.

Saloua is bringing Morocco

Mufarrei Morocco to East Africa

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND – HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY, OWNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS IN EAST AFRICA?

My name is Saloua Mufarrej. I was born in Tangier, the seaport city located on the Strait of Gibraltar where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean sea. I left when I was 18 to seek a university degree in London and soon after, entered the corporate world. 15 years later, I landed in Kenya as an expatriate managing an airline. It was meant to be a 3 year posting, but within that period, I met my husband and Kenya has become our home.

I always wanted to open my own business and during the covid lockdown, I had the time to plan and start my own project. The lockdown was a blessing in disguise as my brother was available in Morocco to source the products and establish an export company and secondly, the artisans had so much stock available as there was no tourism.

This project just felt natural to me. I always had a passion for home decor, art, and for handmade items. Secondly, this business has been running in my family for 3 generations. In fact, my grandfather was one of the first and largest

38 | Mena In Africa

exporters and manufacturers of Moroccan rugs. One of the factories is still running to this day. But most importantly, being away from your home country makes you appreciate it more and more. The Riads Collection is a way for me of bringing my Morocco to Kenya. It gives me so much pleasure to be able to promote my Moroccan Heritage in kenya

TELL US ABOUT RIADS COLLECTION. WE RECALL YOU MENTIONING THAT YOUR PRODUCTS ARE HANDMADE. WHAT ELSE MAKES RIADS COLLECTION UNIQUE?

Every single item in my showroom is handmade. Moroccan arts and crafts are so diverse and they are an essential part of the rich Moroccan heritage. They have been passed on from generation to generation over many centuries and this ensures the continuity and preservation. The beauty is that Morocco is so diverse from North to South and from East to West. Whether it is brass, wood, rugs, ceramics, lights or tiles, everything is handmade and each area specializes in its own craft.

The geographical diversity also plays a part in the creation of the crafts. Fez is known for its clay ceramic, hence all our Zellige tiles and Fez ceramics are sourced from there. Safi, is an area where there is red clay, hence the deep colors of their ceramics. The Berber villages each have their own type of weaving and color schemes. The handwoven blankets come from Chefchaouen, my parents’ home town, which is located in the mountains and can get cold in the winter. The wood carving can be seen in several areas of Morocco but the motifs and designs are different.

What makes The Riads Collection unique is its authenticity. We live our culture in our homes with our parents and grandparents through the rituals and hospitality, through our home decor and cuisine, through our celebrations and festivities. Any customer that enters our showroom will be told stories behind each product. It’s part of me and I am passionate about it. I am always ready to give genuine advice to a customer who is looking for that special Moroccan touch in their homes. Another thing that makes us unique is the possibility to bring custom-ordered items for a project, when time allows. They can not only select from what I have in my showroom, but I can help them source anything they have seen in a magazine or Pinterest that is made in Morocco.

WHAT DO YOU KEEP IN MIND WHEN CHOOSING MOROCCAN ITEMS TO SELL IN KENYA?

I am lucky to have my family in Morocco, especially my brother who helps me source the right products at the right price. As mentioned earlier, it requires a lot of traveling, as every region has its own speciality of arts and crafts.

May 2024 Edition | 39

When buying from the source, you ensure 3 things: authenticity, quality and competitive prices.

Secondly, I go for a good variety in every shipment, to make sure that my customers will always have different things to buy every time. This is extremely important when it comes to B2B, like lodges and restaurants. I have to make sure that I don’t bring the same items every time as this will not be appreciated by the lodges, for example, who want their hotels to look unique.

Thirdly, I make sure that I bring items that are suitable to the Kenyan climate. I choose items for the Kenyan coastal life, and then a more tribal look for those who are looking to decorate their holiday mountain home, or boho chic style for the younger Kenyan generation. There is something for everybody and every style.

Most importantly, overtime, you learn about your customers and their needs, likes and dislikes. Each shipment becomes better than the previous one.

WHAT IS THE ONE ITEM IN YOUR HOME FROM MOROCCO THAT YOU COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT?

My other passion in life is cooking, so I couldn’t live without an authentic Moroccan tagine at home. A tagine is a traditional cooking pot made of ceramic clay, it has a round base and a cone shaped cover which helps steam circulation with very little water. I use it at least once a week to cook some traditional Moroccan recipes.

WHAT IS THE BEST HOME DECORATING ADVICE YOU HAVE FOR US?

I have so much to say, it’s hard to think of one. When it comes to home decor, I love playing with different textures and the positioning of lighting and placing a feature item which turns your space into a timeless home. If you can just imagine an entrance to a home, with a ceramic fountain trickling water, a beautiful plant in a handmade pot, an antique mirror which adds space to the area, and finally a beautiful brass pendant reflecting its design on the wall. A magical space has already been created.

HOW DO YOU FIND A BALANCE BETWEEN WORK AND FAMILY LIFE?

Thankfully, my husband and I work close to each other, and our home is not far from work. So our family ritual starts with dropping our toddler to school, having a quick lunch together, one of us has to pick up our toddler again from school and we try to leave work around 5-6pm so we can spend the evenings together. In the corporate world, this is very hard to do, but I am very grateful to have the luxury of spending quality time with the family on a daily basis. It is also important to have good people working for you which you can delegate work to, especially when you’re out of the country.

WHAT ARE THE TOP FIVE LESS KNOWN PLACES YOU WOULD RECOMMEND FOR US TO VISIT IN MOROCCO?

Most customers that enter my shop ask me the same question or more importantly, they all leave my shop with the dream to visit Morocco one day. In fact, everyone knows and hears about Marrakech, but the 5 less known places would be

1. Tangier, my home town which is a melting pot of cultures dating from the Phoenician times and has the most scenic sea views overlooking Spain.

2. Asilah is another town, about 40 km from Tangier. It lies on the Atlantic ocean and is an artistic hub known for its murals and it has a stunning old town (medina).

3. Essaouira is a port city on the Atlantic. Its medina is listed on the UNESCO world heritage and its the perfect place for cultural expression and its also known for its Gnaoua music festival in June.

4. Merzouga, a stunning town in the desert with beautiful sand dunes, can give you an authentic taste of desert life.

5. Last but not least, my parents hometown, the blue town of Chefchaouen, where time stops and the blue washed city . It’s the perfect place for those who want to wander around the cobblestone medina and see the local craftsmen and local people living their simple lives. The mountains surrounding it are extremely picturesque and have the most stunning waterfalls. It is also a Unesco heritage site.

YOU ALSO HAPPEN TO BE A TALENTED CHEF, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOROCCAN DISH TO COOK?

Well, I wouldn’t call myself a talented chef but a passionate home cook. I have learnt from my mother and grandmother the most traditional Moroccan cooking. One of my favorite dishes to cook is the Chicken tagine with olives and preserved lemons. Thankfully these days, we can find preserved lemons in Nairobi, but when you have time, they are also easy to make at home. This chicken tagine can be cooked in a normal pot as well, for those that don’t have tagine. The chicken gets a unique flavor from all the spices but mostly from the cooked preserved lemons and olives. I will cook one for you one of these days.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE THREE PLACES IN NAIROBI?

Nairobi has so many beautiful places, but to name 3, I would start with the national park. We are so spoiled to have a national park within our city. Karura forest would be the second one, it’s such a haven of peace for anyone seeking to have a breath of fresh air. I used to go walking there almost everyday when I was pregnant, and then as our baby was born, I would wrap him around my body and go for a walk, and as he grew older, we would put him on a stroller

and now, he’s walking with us. He loves it just as much as we do. My third favorite place is Tigoni waterfalls. We usually go there on a sunday, light up our jiko for the tagine and a BBQ for grilling, and do all the cooking from scratch. I love cooking outdoors.

WHAT LAST WORDS DO YOU HAVE FOR OUR READERS, ESPECIALLY THOSE FROM THE MENA REGION WHO ARE THINKING OF MOVING TO KENYA?

First of all, I would like to invite everyone to come and visit my showroom, which is located at 14 Riverside drive. It is a small Moroccan mystical haven in the center of Nairobi.

For those interested in doing business in Kenya, I would just like to say that the process of starting a business and getting an investor’s permit was quite easy. It is fast and smooth. Once that is done, doing business in Kenya is facilitated with having a platform like Mpesa which allows business to grow and expand. Online business is also very easy because of the mpesa platform. Social media is also a facilitator as everyone is connected in Kenya. Last but not least, the Kenyan market is very diverse and the purchasing power is growing with the dynamic aspirational middle class.

UAE trade relations with East Africa: Current Status & Prospects

East African GDP growth now significantly higher than global average

Introduction

East African economies include Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, with eight of these showing annual GDP growth rates in excess of 5% and all bar two performing at higher rates than current global GDP growth. As such, they are attracting significant attention from the UAE, who sees infrastructure and investment opportunities.

The UAE Approach

Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE and heart of its diplomatic relations with East Africa have been growing after the UAE’s independence, and political relations have been strengthened and established with the region in recent years. Huge planning is involved, with major documents, plans, visions and strategies such as the Economic Vision 2030 and economic priorities of the UAE to regulate the overall foreign trade of the country.

The UAE economy achieved 7.6% growth and a GDP of US$599 billion in 2022. It seeks to create a diversified economy, design a coherent financial policy, open markets, develop sufficient and flexible infrastructure, and economic growth, empower financial markets, strengthen its position as a center for new exports, a talent center and for global capital, and is taking steps towards the UAE Centennial Plan for 2071.

The UAE is also investing in making extensive efforts to achieve the goals of the 2050 energy strategy of the UAE, the economic vision of 2030 and the promotion of the position in renewable energy, the expansion of ports, commercial infrastructures, increasing the capacity of ports, increasing the growth of the non-oil sector , knowledge-based economy, and expanding tourism through to 2050.

In recent years, East Africa has been the fastest-growing region of the African continent, and most East African countries consider the development of international cooperation as economic and diplomatic priorities to attract UAE investment in basic sectors.

Many of these nations consider the UAE as a successful development model that specializes in urban development and infrastructure creation. Maintaining and improving the credit rating in the region, improving the world’s top ranks in the human development index and the food security index, becoming a logistics superpower, strengthening the aviation and tourism sectors, competition between the powers, strengthening economic cooperation and benefiting from economic growth are important in Abu Dhabi’s attention to this area.

Also, the UAE is maximizing its international trade share, diversifying foreign partners, strengthening the national economy, opening new markets, and increasing access to global markets for the export of non-oil goods and services in trade relations with East Africa. In addition, the UAE’s economic diplomacy has focused on promoting its position as a global trade hub and a global center for attracting foreign capital and a diverse and stable economy. This is why Africa has developed as being of substantial regional interest.

One of the important actions of Abu Dhabi in this region is the expansion of treaties, investments, and agreements, increasing cooperation with regional organizations, and improving the environment for investment and business development. In this regard, the European Union also wants to partner with the UAE in energy and infrastructure development in Africa, while the UAE and Israel have an additional joint plan to invest in Africa.

UAE aid has been provided as part of its economic diplomacy in East African countries to Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, and Ethiopia. Abu Dhabi has also learned that East Africa plays an important role in the UAE’s food security strategy.

Many countries in the region depend on agriculture with arable land. Efforts to reduce dependence on achieving food security have led to investment, land purchases, and better access to agricultural products in East Africa. East Africa’s growing infrastructure and energy

46 | Mena In Africa

needs are great opportunities. Over the past decade, the UAE has emerged as one of the largest investors in Africa.

The UAE is now the world’s fourth largest investor in Africa (after China, EU, and the US) and in 2018, financed more than 66 projects in 28 African countries. Companies such as DP World and Abu Dhabi Ports have projects and seaports in Angola, Djibouti, Mozambique, Somalia, and Tanzania.

Significant UAE-East Africa Trade Relations

Kenya

Kenya is the largest economy in East Africa and the gateway to East and Central Africa. A more developed infrastructure and emerging opportunities in this country have attracted Abu Dhabi’s attention.

Expanding business meetings between companies and individuals of the two countries, increasing investment, business relations with the agreement on faster trade agreements, examining investment partnerships in oil and gas, technology transfer, agriculture, health,

and treatment, as well as the development of special economic zones, and negotiations on A Comprehensive Economic Partnership (the first between the UAE and an African country, (the UAE-Kenya CEPA) have effectively made the UAE Kenya’s second-largest market after China.

Trade has increased almost tenfold in the past decade. This growth is connected to the increasing demand for Kenyan exports in the UAE and the UAE’s investment in Kenyan infrastructure.

Negotiations between the UAE and Kenya on renewable energy and boosting non-oil trade between the two countries are ongoing.

Trade and investment between the two countries is currently US$2.3 billion. In 2021, the value of Kenya’s imports from the UAE was approximately US$1.83 billion, while Kenya’s exports to the UAE were approximately US$315 million. Kenya imports oil, broadcasting equipment, and plastic while exporting tea, flowers, fruit, and sheep and goat meat.

48 | Mena In Africa

The UAE’s US$3.5 billion investment, present in key sectors such as tourism and Kenyan real estate, increased Emirates-Nairobi (NBO) flights, the presence of 50,000 Kenyans in the UAE, and other initiatives are such that Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the UAE Prime Minister, has identified Kenya as “one of the most promising business partners for Dubai” in the coming years.

Tanzania

Abu Dhabi has selected Tanzania as a priority country and key trading partner for the development of trade, investment, and cooperation in Africa.

Tanzania has abundant natural resources, an expected GDP growth of 5.2% in 2023, and with a series of developed ports is a vital sea gateway for many African markets. The second largest economy in East Africa, the country has numerous opportunities for partnership and cooperation with UAE and Tanzania in food security, logistics, tourism, and mining.

The signing of numerous memorandum of understanding at Dubai Expo 2020, the signing of effective contracts, and an agreement to

remove double taxation barriers in trade between the two countries, has led to a wider cooperations between the two countries officials and leaders in 2022, including 36 MoU for a total investment of more than US$7.49 billion in key industry sectors such as energy, agriculture, tourism, infrastructure, transportation, textiles, information, communications technology, and construction. The DP World contract in Tanzanian ports, development of solar and wind energy projects in Tanzania, have made the UAE one of the largest trading partners of Tanzania.

In 2022, Tanzania was the UAE’s secondlargest trading partner among East African countries after Kenya. The unprecedented growth of UAE-Tanzania non-oil trade reached US$2.5 billion in 2022 with an 11% growth rate compared to 2021. The major products exported by the UAE to Tanzania are refined oil, raw sugar, and automobiles.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia’s economic relations (trade and investment) with the UAE have made significant progress in the last two decades, with Ethiopia offering investment opportunities in the agricultural, manufacturing, and service sectors.

May 2024 Edition | 49

The UAE has become one of Ethiopia’s top trading partners. The trade relations between the two countries benefited the UAE and the UAE is one of Ethiopia’s four main export destinations (agricultural products and semiprocessed goods). In return, it imports oil, vehicles, electronics, machinery, fertilizers, and other consumer goods from the UAE.

The UAE has also pledged US$3 billion (1 billion in aid, and 2 billion in investment) to support Ethiopia’s political and economic reforms. The presence of Eagle Hills in the real estate project in Addis Ababa, the Khalifa Fund for Enterprise Development (KFED), and about 66 UAE investors in Ethiopia have increased UAE investment into Ethiopia to more than US$2.5 billion.

With some 200,000 Ethiopians in the UAE, the signing of an investment promotion agreement, the signing of bilateral investment agreements, more than 100 UAE investments in the agricultural sector, investment in the development of solar energy projects and renovation of industrial areas and bilateral trade of about US$1 billion annually, are important steps in developing the bilateral relationships.

In 2021, the UAE exported goods to the value of US$794 million to Ethiopia, mainly refined oil, jewelry, and cars. In 2021, Ethiopia exported US$1.05 billion to the United Arab Emirates. The main products were gold, other oilseeds, and sheep and goat meat.

Uganda

Uganda is a key gateway for the UAE in the African Great Lakes region. The UAE and Uganda have signed several economic agreements BASA, DTA, IPPA, TECA, and others to strengthen the cooperative relationship between the two countries.

The promotion of agencies, the signing of important investment contracts at the Dubai Expo 2020, Uganda’s strong presence at the Expo, finding opportunities in the agriculture and clean energy sectors, and similar deals

increased bilateral relations with Uganda to US$3 billion in 2022.

Uganda’s exports to the UAE are pearls, precious stones, metals, and mineral fuels, oils, distillate products. With about 100,000 Ugandans in the UAE, the expansion of flights, and the emergence of Ugandan SMEs in the UAE have made the UAE one of the largest suppliers of goods to Uganda, and this is increasing.

UAE-East Africa Smaller Trade Partners

Trade between the UAE and the countries of the COMESA economic bloc has been increasing. Comesa includes Burundi, Comoros, Congo, Dem Rep., Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sudan, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The UAE’s ‘Dubai World’ project, and a special investment arm in Africa called ‘Dubai World Africa’ on Africa are focused on the African Continent, the Indian Ocean Islands, and about 30 investment projects in Djibouti, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Comoros.

In Somalia, in addition to aid, the UAE has signed a cooperation agreement with the Somali government. More than 100,000 Somalis work in the UAE. There is economic cooperation between the UAE and the Somalia, with the UAE managing Somalia’s ports.

The UAE was one of the first investors in Djibouti and has signed various agreements with the country in military security and economic cooperation. Emirates and ‘DP World’ have invested in the development and management of the port in Djibouti.

The Abu Dhabi Development Fund has invested in infrastructure projects as well as oil production and transportation projects in Eritrea. In 2021, the UAE exported US$105 million of products to Eritrea. The Emirates Investments Group has also expanded its geographical interest by investing in Gambia’s business, industry, and aviation sectors.

50 | Mena In Africa

Zimbabwe’s main exports to the UAE include precious stones and pearls, tobacco, and fruits. Zimbabwe largely imports value-added products from the UAE. The two sides’ relationship is growing rapidly with the agreement on the promotion and support of investment.

Bilateral trade has increased to US$1.6 billion in 2021, making the UAE one of Zimbabwe’s largest trading partners.

The Seychelles and UAE also signed different agreements in the field of economic cooperation between the two countries, while the UAE and Mozambique have increased economic relations with long-term relations and the signing of a cooperation agreement. Recently, Zambia and the United Arab Emirates signed a US$2 billion contract to build solar power plants.

The UAE-East Africa Vision

The UAE has expanded its diplomatic presence in the region in recent years. The UAE is among the top ten importers of goods and commodities for 10 African countries.

The value of UAE-African trade continues to increase at a higher rate when compared to the UAE’s total trade, while the UAE’s investment in Africa is significantly more than all other Middle Eastern players.

Due to the bilateral attention now being paid to UAE-East African cooperation and current trade trends, the prospects of economic relations and trade flows between the UAE and East Africa are encouraging.

An Egyptian Passionate

Karim Montasser:

Montasser: Passionate About Africa

We first met Karim in October 2020 when he had just arrived in Nairobi. We immediately hit it off. Since it was his first time in Kenya, he was eager to explore the city and make friends. As country manager of Adidas and Puma Karim is tasked with handling both brands in Kenya. He has a major in the German language and a Masters Degree in Marketing which gives him the knowledge and know-how for effectively managing the retail business.

COULD YOU PLEASE DESCRIBE YOUR CAREER PATH SO FAR?

Since 2008, I have had experience in retail business in different fields such as tourism at The Hilton Hotel, Banking such as National Egypt Bank and Loyalty Programs such as E-points which is the biggest loyalty program company in the Middle East and retail fashion.

I was lucky to join different brands in different categories. I managed brands from Denmark called Vero Moda and JACK & JONES in 2015, I have also worked with luxury brands such as True Religion from the USA and Moschino from Italy in 2017. I also worked with Azadea which is one of the biggest retail companies in the Middle East which has Zara in their portfolio. I managed a Spanish brand called Stradivarius in 2018

In 2019 I managed one of the most luxurious brands called Philip Plein in Cairo and successfully opened their first two stores in Egypt.

Since 2020 I joined the sportswear brands as a country operation manager for Puma and Adidas. Now I am based in Kenya from 2020 as Country Operation manager where I successfully opened two stores for Adidas and Puma in Nairobi. It was the first Puma store in East Africa. We are now preparing for two stores in City Mall Nyali in Mombasa: Adidas and Puma.

WHAT WAS THE MOST EXCITING PART ABOUT MAKING THE MOVE TO KENYA FROM EGYPT?

Kenya was a new pure market for me. This

came with new experiences, new culture and new customer behavior. Kenya is also the hub of East Africa and all international businesses are looking for this new market

WHAT WERE THE FIRST STEPS YOU NEEDED TO TAKE WHILE RELOCATING, AND WHAT HELPED YOU TO MAKE THE RELOCATION AND ADAPTATION PROCESS AS SMOOTH AS POSSIBLE?

First, my previous experience in hospitality and retail in different countries helped me meet a lot of people from all over the world and this made me accustomed to different nationalities and cultures therefore relocating to Kenya was smooth in meeting people.

Secondly, I met the right people once I arrived in Kenya which helped tremendously. People like Grace who I always said is the password to unlocking Kenya and Sevda Bilen who was the Country Manager of the Turkish company LC Wakiki along with Özgün Ilhan the current Country Manager of Flo, a Turkish shoe company.

HOW HAS YOUR EXPERIENCE SO FAR BEEN WORKING WITH A TEAM OF PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS AND CULTURES THAN YOU?

I am accustomed to working with people from different backgrounds and cultures in Egypt in the hospitality field such as Hilton Hotel. I have also worked in Dubai, Jordan, Kuwait and now Kenya. I always look forward to working with people from other countries, learning their culture, language, expressions and attitudes while gaining knowledge from them.

WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS THE BEST WAY TO DO MARKET RESEARCH ABOUT A FOREIGN COUNTRY?

Pay a physical visit and stay in the country for at least one month to see and experience for yourself especially if you are thinking of moving to an African country.

WHAT ENCOURAGED ADIDAS AND PUMA TO ENTER THE EAST AFRICAN MARKET?

Like I mentioned earlier, international

60 | Mena In Africa
May 2024 Edition | 61

companies are searching for new markets and especially for sportswear brands Kenya is the best market because of Kenyan customers behavior and lifestyle. Kenyans are well known worldwide as runners and active sports people. Kenya also has good purchasing power. A lot of Kenyans wake up every day at 5 am to go to the gym which leads to them purchasing and using a lot of sports items

WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES YOU HAVE SEEN BETWEEN THE KENYAN AND EGYPTIAN MARKETS?

One of the Similarities is that Kenyans are used to dealing with a lot of nationalities because it is a tourist country. One of the differences is that Egypt is double the size of Kenya and has double the population therefore has a much bigger market than Kenya.

WHAT SUGGESTIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR KENYA TO DO TO ATTRACT MORE EGYPTIAN (AND MENA) INVESTMENT?

First, I recommend opening the country to any investor who is coming to invest in the country and create jobs for Kenyans. These investors not only provide employment but they also support the economy by spending on personal experiences like accommodation, safaris and more.

Secondly, reduce the fees for work permits. Thirdly, provide free visas for those who are coming for the first time to explore the market. Fourth, have as many systems working online as possible to make it easier for investors. Fifth, decrease the tax and the vat on products.

For us in retail, mall landlords need to decrease the rent of stores to attract international brands to come to Kenya.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE FOR BRANDS EXPANDING TO A NEW COUNTRY?

First I would say well trained Human Resources which fit international standards . Secondly there should be premium locations with no zoning inside the malls. Thirdly, lower tax andVAT would be very helpful. Lastly,

there needs to be a faster process for clearing shipments.

WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE SETTING UP SHOP IN KENYA?

There are not so many options of contractors who are able to do the stores for us up to international standards. We also struggle with commitment of timing for deliveries and tasks. We also need lower taxes on fixtures. Choosing locations for the stores was also a challenge along with setting up Human Resources.

Apart from Kenya, are there plans to expand to other East African countries?

We already have three stores in Uganda and we plan to open stores in Tanzania and Rwanda soon.

WHAT ADVICE WAS MOST HELPFUL TO YOU IN DEVELOPING YOUR CAREER THAT HAS HELPED YOU IN KENYA?

Listen to the local advice. Lead by example. Be down to earth and open minded. Try to adapt as soon as possible. Train your team well. Be always up to date with what is happening around you. Motivate your team and treat everyone equally.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR WORK LIFE BALANCE WHEN WORKING FOR A GLOBAL COMPANY?

It is quite difficult but I always find a way to recharge my energy and follow new passions while facing challenges. I try to spend weekends with my family and friends and we travel and get to know the country more. I try to go everywhere whenever I can so that I can experience the country deeply and get to know more about the people and culture which I believe will help me in business.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ITEMS FROM ADIDAS AND PUMA?

Adidas running shoes called Ultraboost and Puma running shoes called Nitro.

WHERE ARE YOUR THREE FAVORITE PLACES TO VISIT IN KENYA?

Maasain Mara , Amboseli and Diani Beach.

62 | Mena In Africa

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE AFRICAN PERFORMER/MUSICIAN?

A singer called Hope Irakoze who is a great singer and sings in different languages.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE KENYAN FOOD?

Meat, especially beef steak and T bone steak.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR EGYPTIAN AND MENA BUSINESS PEOPLE OR ANYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD THINKING OF COMING TO KENYA?

Come to Kenya, Karibu Kenya! Visit first and explore the market well and then check the customer’s needs here. Afterwards decide what you can do to add value here in the market. There are a lot of opportunities in Kenya. Do not relay only on the information available online, the reality on the ground is sometimes so different.

What advice would you give Kenyans who are interested in expanding their business to Egypt?

Welcome to Egypt! Do as much research as you can online. Communicate with Egyptian Embassy which has put a lot of effort and a

done a great job especially our ambassador His Excellency Wael Nasr Attia.

Kenya and Egypt are both part of COMESA which means that any product made in Egypt or made in Kenya is tax free for both countries therefore Kenyan investors can compete and offer affordable prices of their products in Egypt.

By the way, Egypt imports Kenyan avocado, tea and coffee annually. Kenya imports oranges, Potatoes, Steel, Marble Gypsum board, and textile especially Egyptian cotton from Egypt.

WHAT LAST WORDS DO YOU HAVE FOR OUR READERS?

Karibu Kenya Rafiki (Welcome to Kenya my friend!) Kenya is such a good and safe country where you can live easily with your family. There are a lot of activities you can do no matter what you like.

You can travel from Kenya to Egypt or Dubai everyday because of the direct flights. There are also flights to other East and West African countries daily.

There are a lot of nationalities present in Kenya and plenty of business opportunities.

Safaris here are amazing, especially the migration in the Maasai Mara. The Best part is you get to see animals freely living their normal life not in cages and zoos. Nairobi has an Egyptian bank Commercial International Bank (CIB) which is encouraging to Egyptians looking to move here. Wadi Degla, an Egyptian owned and run Sports Club which has thousands of family members is present in Kenya. In the past fifteen years, there are a lot of Egyptian companies which have opened in Kenya. For example: Giza System, Egy pro, El

sweedy, El Masa Leasing, Town team clothing brand, Qandeil for steel, PETA construction, Nike, Women’s secret, Springfield, The Body Shop is also owned by an Egyptian.

There are also many Egyptians working for international companies like: Carrefour, Safricom, Aldo, Hummel, Hospitality, Real Estate and Shopping Malls.

The weather is amazing all year and most Embassies have representatives here. Try Kenya, you love it!

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE THE BRAND PETER & BLACK? TELL US ABOUT THE LOGO. In 2015, I fell completely in love with leathercrafting, and then took a whole year to make up my mind, work on my skills until 3rd of September 2016 when I decided to launch Peter & Black as one of the first slow fashion leather brands in Sudan. Speaking about sustainability as a bi-product brand and also taking a step ahead to encourage young Sudanese artisans to follow.

The brand provides sustainable, luxurious leather pieces which pay homage to the diversity of Sudanese heritage and also bring joy to the soul. The name was chosen to embrace the ultimate pure beauty of the word “ Black” in contrast to my nickname “ Peter. It tells the story of a young black Sudanese man celebrating the ultimate beauty of Africa. The visual identity of Peter & Black is usually inspired by the African architecture, its symmetrical shapes, buildings which are more of geometrics and the colorful artistic scene. The logo itself is a unique merge of the brand first two letters of composing the long acronym Peter & Black with the sewing kits.

WHAT MAKES PETER & BLACK A SUSTAINABLE BRAND?

Speaking of sustainability, the brand works hard to be less harmful to the environment, less commercial but more into making impacts, major changes and bringing good chances to the community. IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES DESIGNERS FACE AND HAVE TO OVERCOME?

As a designer I believe the most difficult part is turning your passion and talent into a real business, because we as designers usually think emotionally about our own creations as our own babies and I

believe in order to overcome this obstacle we need to get someone who is more expert in the business part and form any type of possible partnership or agreement.

Also, being limited in resources is also an obstacle because you might end up doing everything yourself but not fully completing anything, so you can think about prioritizing your tasks and focus on the most critical elements. For a fashion designer I believe having your own tone of voice is also difficult because you need to create your own unique identity and it’s not an easy task at all, however you can invest your time thinking about your values, mission and target audience. Creating your own style guide. I believe there are so many other obstacles facing the designers everyday and can still be overcome if you follow your business from day one and make sure that you have everything written in order to evaluate your performance.

WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT FROM PETER & BLACK IN 2024?

We are planning to focus more on expanding our community of creatives, creators and Art enthusiasts, we believe that we can together make an impact and a change in our own societies using our art. We are also planning to create more opportunities for anyone who is interested in learning about crafting and leather crafts, making interactive workshops, exhibitions and art events.

APART FROM FASHION, WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER PASSIONS?

I am a social butterfly, I consider myself an art practitioner, consider everything as art, so I pursue life through an artistic point of view, playing different sports, enjoying reading, writing, also doing photography capturing what my eyes define as an art. I also love socializing, going to parties, meeting new people, learning languages, accents and also getting introduced to different cultures and traditions.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN KENYA?

I’m a cook, and I’m humbled to say that the best restaurant is always my own kitchen, however I enjoy exploring original and authentic cuisines, don’t really have a specific restaurant but I believe generally the quality of food is really good in Nairobi.

Experience Mauritania’s Pristine Terrain with Gustav

Ihave now done the Iron Ore Train in Mauritania 5 times and I can tell you this is one of the most amazing travel experiences you can do in Africa and by one of my favorites on the continent because of all the wild adventures. To jump on the one of the world’s longest trains 700 km through the Sahara Desert is one the absolute best and most authentic travel experiences you can get. We have additionally added camping on sand dunes which are not even on Google Maps yet and we find it by going off road. We have done it before and are thrilled to do it again!

Somalia’s K’naan Releases his first Song in Over a Decade

World renowned Somali musician is back on the scene after more than a decade with a new song called “Refugee”. The song starts off with a solo that is supported by acapella singers. A smooth stringed instrument then blends in followed by a beat that you cannot help but sway to.

K’Naan’s unofficial World Cup anthem “Wavin’ Flag” became a No. 1 hit in more than a dozen countries worldwide after the remix was chosen as Coca-Cola’s promotional anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In December 2009, K’naan performed the “Wavin’ Flag” live during

the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour, which took him to 86 countries around the world.
