LEBANESE GENTLEMAN on an AFRICAN Journey

Letter From The Founder

It is with great pride that we present this month’s issue of MENA in Africa Magazine. Our mission is to create a platform that celebrates the remarkable achievements of the Middle East and North African community in Sub-Saharan Africa. Each month, we bring you insightful coverage of developments across diplomacy, business, culture, and lifestyle in the process shining a light on the people and partnerships shaping our shared future.
We are thrilled to announce that, starting this month, MENA in Africa Magazine will now be published monthly. This exciting milestone allows us to capture stories as they unfold ensuring our community’s voice is heard and its successes widely shared.
In today’s fast-changing world, the bonds between the Middle East, North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa are more important than ever. Over the past year, these ties have deepened across multiple fronts. Saudi Arabia has pledged $25 billion over the next decade to support Africa’s private sector
and digital transformation. Meanwhile, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations have expanded investments in agriculture, healthcare, renewable energy, and logistics. North African countries are also stepping up, with Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria increasing trade missions and development partnerships with countries across the continent.
Cultural exchange continues to strengthen this relationship. A landmark example is the first-of-its-kind exhibition Kings and Queens of Africa: Forms and Figures of Power at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, which ran until 29 May 2025, celebrating Africa’s rich heritage in the heart of the MENA region.
I now invite you to enjoy our second issue and do get in touch, we would love to hear your feedback!

Every 25 May, the world marks Africa Day, commemorating the founding of the Organization of African Unity (now the African Union) in 1963. Beyond being a date on the calendar, it’s a moment to celebrate the spirit of Pan-African unity and reflect on Africa’s expanding partnerships across the globe. In the Middle East and North Africa, Africa Day has become more than a ceremonial observance. It is an opportunity to highlight deepening ties between African nations and the region. Across the Gulf and North Africa, embassies and missions host vibrant gatherings that blend diplomacy with art, music, and food. From live performances of African drumming in Riyadh to exhibitions of African crafts in Abu Dhabi and Doha, the celebrations capture the diversity and dynamism of the continent.

QAAL Designs: Where Somali Heritage Meets Global Fashion
Inspired by Somali heritage and driven by a vision for sustainable elegance, QAAL is redefining African fashion on the global stage.
Somalia’s rich cultural tapestry has long influenced African fashion, from its flowing guntiino dresses and intricate henna patterns to the vivid tie & dye fabrics that once graced bustling markets along the coast. Historically, Somali style merged practicality with elegance, shaped by nomadic life and centuries of trade across the Indian Ocean. Today, African fashion as a whole is experiencing a renaissance, with designers from Dakar to Dar es Salaam redefining heritage
through contemporary silhouettes, sustainable practices, and a global presence. It is within this movement that Somali designer Nimco brings her vision to life through QAAL Designs. Rooted in the traditions of her homeland yet reaching audiences across continents, Nimco’s work fuses cultural storytelling with modern design, a philosophy she shares in this exclusive interview, where she opens up about her inspirations, sustainability ethos, and the global journey of her brand.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO FASHION AND COME UP WITH QAAL
DESIGNS?
QAAL, meaning priceless, is inspired by my Somali nomadic roots, nature’s raw beauty, and the elegance of architecture. I began in Somalia, teaching tie & dye and batik with NGOs like IIDA and CARE International. where I witnessed creativity spark hope. QAAL Designs was born to merge traditional craftsmanship with modern design creating timeless, ethical pieces that carry the soul of heritage into the future.
QAAL WAS PREVIOUSLY PRESENT AT THE ANNUAL TRIBAL CHIC FASHION SHOW IN KENYA, EAST AFRICA. WAS THIS YOUR FIRST TIME TO SHOWCASE OUR DESIGNS IN AFRICA? HOW WAS THE EXPERIENCE AND WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BRING QAAL TO AFRICA? WHERE ELSE HAVE YOU BEEN? SHOWCASED GLOBALLY?
I’ve been showcasing in East Africa since 2005, including three shows in Rwanda, but nothing compares to presenting on African soil. QAAL’s journey is global, yet its heartbeat will always be African. Bringing Qaal to Africa honors where my story began. Sharing our sustainable, seasonless designs with the very communities that shaped my vision. While much of my work has been shown in America, including at the United Nations UNEP/UNEA in Nairobi, nothing matches the pride of standing on home ground, presenting a collection that carries the spirit of Africa.
TELL US MORE ABOUT QAAL’S VISION ON SUSTAINABILITY
At QAAL Designs, sustainability is not a trend, it is a return to truth. We create pieces that are timeless and seasonless, garments meant to be worn, loved, and passed on. Each design carries the elegance of simplicity yet speaks with the sophistication of culture and creativity.
Our vision is shaped by the many tribal communities of Africa, where life once flowed in harmony with nature where nothing was wasted and everything had purpose. We draw from this wisdom to craft clothing that honors the earth and uplifts the hands that make it. For us, sustainability is storytelling. It is reviving the principles that built strong communities for generations. respect for resources, pride in craftsmanship, and a deep connection to heritage. In every QAAL piece, we weave the past into the present, so the beauty we create today becomes the legacy we leave for tomorrow.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE OUT OF ALL YOUR COLLECTIONS SO FAR?
Choosing a favorite feels almost impossible— each piece carries its own story, its own heartbeat. The truth is, my favorite is always the one I’m wearing at that moment, because that’s the piece I’m living in, breathing in, and letting speak for me that day. Tomorrow, it might be another. Each design becomes my favorite when it reflects the mood, the occasion, and the journey I’m on.

IN YOUR EXPERIENCE WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES FASHION DESIGNERS FACE AND HAVE TO OVERCOME?
Across the world, designers walk the same tightrope balancing vision and trends, beauty and ethics, individuality and a crowded stage all while protecting the soul of creation.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PEOPLE TO THINK ABOUT WHEN THEY HEAR ABOUT QAAL?
When people hear “QAAL,” I want them to think of something priceless not just in value, but in meaning. I want them to imagine garments that carry the whispers of heritage, the touch of skilled hands, and the heartbeat of the earth itself.
QAAL should evoke the feeling of standing barefoot on rich soil, of silk brushing against the skin, of colors born from nature’s own palette. It’s a reminder that fashion can be both beautiful and responsible, that what we wear can tell stories, protect traditions, and nurture the planet.
I want QAAL to inspire people to see clothing not as disposable trends, but as timeless companions pieces that honor the past, live fully in the present, and leave a better world for the future.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE UPCOMING DESIGNERS?
For African designers, our culture and traditions are priceless, design with truth, work with integrity, and let your creations honor people, planet, and heritage, for trends will fade but authenticity endures.
WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT FROM QAAL IN 2025?
As QAAL is a seasonless brand, it will continue to deepen its commitment to sustainability, heritage, and innovation delivering timeless collections that bridge tradition and the future, ensuring every piece is as meaningful as it is beautiful.
APART FROM FASHION, WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER PASSIONS?
I am a nomad of creativity shaping clay in remote corners of Africa, Korea, Turkey, Japan, and Los Angeles; painting, farming, milking camels and traveling the world. Some passions I complete, others I leave unfinished, yet each leaves its mark on my work and my life.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE RESTAURANT.
No matter how many countries I visit or how many fine restaurants I experience, nothing compares to the comfort of a home-cooked meal in my Hooyo’s kitchen. It’s a place where the flavors have been perfecting themselves since the day I was born, each dish infused with love, tradition, and care. There’s no need for reservations, only the joy of being nourished in both body and soul.

Mauritania Secures Boost for Mining Sector with $150 Million AfDB Loan
The African Development Bank ’ s $150 million loan to Mauritania ’ s SNIM will expand mining logistics, boost production, and advance sustainable growth in the sector.
Mauritania’s mining industry is set for a major leap forward as the African Development Bank Group (AfDB) approves a landmark $150 million loan to state-owned iron ore giant Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière (SNIM).
The funding, announced on November 29, forms part of SNIM’s $467 million logistics expansion programme, which aims to double the transport capacity of its iron ore railway by 2030. The investment will also support the production of higher-value products such as iron ore pellets and includes the construction of a 12 MW photovoltaic solar power plant, advancing the company’s decarbonisation goals.
“This programme is a crucial forerunner of SNIM’s future growth as a producer of highquality iron ore and will facilitate its downstream integration,” said Solomon Quaynor, AfDB Vice President for Private Sector, Infrastructure and Industrialisation. “It represents a significant step forward for Mauritania’s mining sector
and will help establish a true regional industrial hub in the medium term.”
Beyond mining, the initiative promises broad social and economic benefits, from job creation especially for youth and women to the empowerment of local communities. Highlighting the strategic importance of the partnership, he stated: “African countries must intensify sub-regional science, technology, and innovation cooperation and, through this, mobilise more coherent support for the African Union’s Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA).”
Nzimande also expressed appreciation to the Tunisian Embassy in South Africa for its consistent efforts in fostering bilateral ties. He noted that Hasna Tizaoui, the Embassy’s Economic and Cultural Counsellor, was recently honoured with the prestigious Science Diplomacy Award at the Science Forum South Africa for her contributions to advancing cooperation.
The Minister further acknowledged the challenges posed by shifting global geopolitics, urging African countries to unite through shared STI initiatives as a pathway to resilience and progress.
This new agreement builds on an already wellestablished foundation of STI collaboration between the two nations. It is designed to accelerate the development of innovative solutions to address critical challenges such as youth unemployment, skills development, healthcare, food security, renewable energy, water sustainability, climate change, biodiversity loss, and digital transformation.
Minister Nzimande was accompanied by a high-level South African delegation that included senior officials from the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI), the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), the National Research Foundation (NRF), and experts from Mintek, the Council for Mineral Technology. The visit underscored both countries’ resolve to harness STI as a driver of sustainable growth, competitiveness, and shared prosperity in Africa.

From Algiers to the Continent: Algeria’s Vision for African Trade Growth
The North African Country is ramping up intra-African trade through AfCFTA, strategic infrastructure projects, and its role as host of IATF2025.
Algeria is taking bold steps to increase its share of trade with African countries, leveraging the opportunities presented by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). At the Algeria Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) 2025 Business Roadshow, Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion, His Excelency Prof. Kamal Rezig, outlined the country’s vision: enhancing continental connectivity through landmark projects such as the TransSahara Highway, the Zouerate Road linking Mauritania, the Nigeria-Algeria gas pipeline, and a regional fibre optic network.
He emphasized Algeria’s drive to create a transparent, stable, and attractive environment for both local and foreign investment. Legislative reforms, simplified administrative processes, strengthened banking and insurance
sectors, and human capital development all form part of a wider strategy to adapt to global economic transformations. While mineral fuels and oils still make up 91.5% of Algeria’s exports, the government is actively promoting diversification within the AfCFTA framework.
In 2024, Algeria’s share of intra-African trade reached 2.2%, up from 1.9% in 2022. Tunisia, South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, and Senegal lead as top export partners, while imports flow primarily from Mauritania, Tunisia, Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco, and Uganda.
The Algeria IATF2025 Business Roadshow, hosted by Afreximbank and the Algerian government, set the stage for the continent’s premier trade and investment event, scheduled for 4–10 September 2025 in Algiers. The fair, expected to draw over 35,000 buyers and visitors from more than 140 countries, will
feature 2,000 exhibitors and is projected to generate deals exceeding US$44 billion. Past editions have attracted 70,000 participants and generated over US$100 billion in trade and investment.
Former Nigerian President and IATF2025 Advisory Council Chair H.E. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo called intra-African trade “a pathway to economic self-reliance,” urging African nations to seize AfCFTA’s potential. Afreximbank’s Mrs. Kanayo Awani reinforced that the IATF is not just an exhibition but a
marketplace to close Africa’s trade information gap, one that has already delivered over US$2 billion in facilitated deals for Algeria alone.
IATF2025 will feature a diverse programme including the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX), a four-day Trade and Investment Forum, the Africa Automotive Show, youth start-up initiatives, matchmaking platforms, and a year-round virtual trade space. Special Days will spotlight cultural exchange, tourism, and diaspora engagement, making the event a hub for business, culture, and innovation.
