SERIES HISTORY -- TIGERS VS TULSA This is the 11th meeting between the Tigers and Tulsa. Memphis leads the overall series, 6-4, but Tulsa won the last meeting played in Tulsa, 79-68, back in 2012-13. The two teams did not face one another last year, as Memphis joined the American Athletic Conference one season before Tulsa did. This will be the first time Memphis and Tulsa will face off more than one time in a season. The first time the two teams met was in 2003-04 in the WNIT post season tournament, then both were members of Conference USA, although in different divisions. Memphis is 2-2 all-time in games at Tulsa and last won here in the 2010-2011 season. LOOKING TO EXTEND WINNING STREAK After getting an overtime win over an East Carolina squad picked to finish third in the preseason coaches’ poll, the Tigers went on the road and picked up a second straight win at UCF, Wednesday night. The Tigers will need to get another road win in order to extend that streak to three games. The Tigers’ longest winning streak of the season is three games (Austin Peay, Central Michigan, Georgetown). BALANCED OFFENSE Memphis had four players in double-digit points in the win at UCF. That balance is something the Tigers have not seen since their regular season opener, a 7963 win over Missouri State, the only other game this year where the Tigers have had four in double digit points. Both of the Tigers’ starting post players scored double-digits in the win Wednesday. Asianna Fuqua-Bey finished with 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting, while Brianna Wright finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, also on 5-for-10 shooting. That duo scoring a combined 26 points was a big part of the Tigers winning the points of the paint battle, 40-32. That effort was the first in conference play where Memphis out-scored their opponents in the paint. In games where Memphis wins the battle of the battle in the paint, the Tigers are 3-1. The challenge for both of the Tiger posts in Tulsa will be repeating the double-digit scoring. Fuqua-Bey has posted back-to-back double digit scoring nights just once this season, while Wright has not put together back-to-back double digit scoring nights yet this season. BALANCED BENCH The win at UCF also marked the fifth time in 15 games this year that the Tiger bench outscored their counterparts. With the 21-14 advantage off the bench, Memphis has gotten more points from its bench than it opponents for a second straight game. The Tigers are 4-1 when their bench outscores the opposition. The 70 points the Tigers scored in the UCF win was the most points the team has scored in 10 games and marks just the third time this year the Tigers have scored 70 or more points. Memphis is 2-1 when they score 70 or more points. ELMORE GETTING BIG BUCKETS With the Tigers down four in the overtime session against East Carolina, freshman guard Brea Elmore drained a three that helped the Tigers sneak back in position for the win. She followed that big bucket up with a career-best 11 point effort in the win at UCF, Wednesday. Her 11 point, three assist, one block and one steal effort marked career bests in points, field goal attemps, three-point field goal attempts, assists, blocks and minutes played (35). WRIGHT CLEANING GLASS Junior forward Brianna Wright is averaging 9.5 rebounds a night. In the last four games, she has aver-
aged 10.3 rebounds a night, getting nine rebounds in each of the Tigers’ last three games after grabbing 14 in Memphis’ conference opener against Temple. She leads the league in offensive rebounds in conference contests. She grabbed seven HEARN NAMED TO AMERICAN WEEKLY HONOR ROLL Junior guard Ariel Hearn was named to the American Athletic Conference weekly honor roll after scoring 26 points in the overtime win over East Carolina, Sunday. Hearn passed the 1,200 career point mark in the ECU win and her 26 point effort was her 21st career 20-point game. She is the third Tiger to earn a spot on the conference’s weekly honor roll. Mooriah Rowser and Breigha Wilder-Cochran also have earned weekly honors from the American this season. HEARN HANDLING MORE OF THE OFFENSE With starting point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran missing the last two games, Ariel Hearn has taken on more of the Tigers’ ball-handling duties, starting at point in the win at UCF and playing in 40 of the games’ 45 minutes in the overtime win over East Carolina, Wednesday. GETTING THE ALL-IMPORTANT FIRST CONFERENCE WIN Head Coach Melissa McFerrin talked about how the East Carolina game would be a scrappy one, and it lived up to the billing. The two teams ended regulation tied at 49 points. Both teams struggled to shoot in the first half, with ECU shooting 22.9 percent and the Tigers shooting 28.1 percent. ECU righted the ship in the second half, shooting 40 percent and outscoring Memphis 29-22, but a foul on Brianna Wright with 0.1 left on the clock with the Pirates up 49-47 gave the Tigers a glimmer of hope. Wright, a 41.6 percent free-throw shooter heading in to the game, hit both foul shots and sent Memphis to its first overtime game since Jan. 14th last year. Neither team wanted an 0-3 start to the season, especially in light of the Tigers’ pending two-game road trip this week and ECU’s looking to host Tulane this week. The overtime win was the first for the Tigers since that Jan. 14th game last year when Memphis upended #23 Rutgers in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. FUQUA-BEY JOINS 500-500 CLUB Junior forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey grabbed eight rebounds in the win over East Carolina on Sunday afternoon. Those eight boards pushed her past 500 for her career, making her just the 25th player in Memphis’ 43-year women’s basketball history to have over 500 career points and 500 career rebounds. Fuqua-Bey is actually just eight points away from her 600th career point heading in to the match-up at Tulsa, Saturday. HEARN MOVES TO 18TH ON TIGER SCORING CHART Junior guard Ariel Hearn moved to 18th on the Memphis career scoring chart against Temple. She heads in to the game at UCF with 1,223 career points. She is 63 points shy of moving to 17th all-time, where Victoria Crawford’s mark (2002-05) of 1,299 points sits heading in to the first game against Tulsa. Her 26 point night against ECU was the 21st 20-point plus game of her Memphis career and was her first 20-plus point game since scoring 20 or more in three straight games (Minnesota, Southern Illinois, UALR). GETTING OVER THE HUMP IN CLOSE GAMES A young Tiger squad is still learning how to pull out close games. Of the Tigers’ seven losses, five have been by single digits, including the one-point loss to Temple in the conference opener. Those five Memphis single digit losses have added up to a combined 23 points.

Memphis is 3-5 in single-digit games following the four-point road win at UCF, Wednesday. FIRST START FOR HOLMES Freshman guard Amber Holmes, who missed her entire senior season of high school ball due to a knee injury, made her first collegiate start in the win over East Carolina. In 13 minutes against a pressing Pirate defense, the freshman finished with two assists against one turnover, with a steal and a rebound. With Breigha Wilder-Cochran missing the ECU game with a hand injury, the Tigers used Holmes at the point in order to give Ariel Hearn opportunities at the two-guard spot. Memphis is tied for fourth in league-only contests with 16.5 offensive rebounds per game, but is tied for last in the league with 20.5 defensive boards a night. Part of the defensive ranking may come from the amount of zone the Tigers have played this year. Memphis has been out-rebounded in 10 of 15 games so far this season and is an even 5-5 when getting fewer missed shots than their opponents. WILLIAMS TIES CAREER HIGH IN THIRD START OF THE SEASON Sophomore guard Taylor Williams tied a careerhigh with her nine-rebound effort in the win over East Carolina, Sunday. Williams scored six of Memphis’ first eight points in the game and played in a careerhigh 36 minutes in the win before fouling out in the overtime session. Of her nine rebounds, five came off the offensive glass. WILDER-COCHRAN ADDS ANOTHER MULTISTEAL GAME Sophomore guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran serves as the Tigers’ primary on-ball defender and had a strong day defensively, Wednesday at USF. She grabbed four steals in the loss, her fifth multi-steal game of the season and her second in as many conference games. Memphis is waiting for the sophomore to break through on the other side of the ball. She is 2-for-14 in the last three games, including an 0-for-3 stretch in the conference opener against Temple in our last game at the Fieldhouse. HEARN DOUBLE-DIGIT STREAK SNAPPED Ariel Hearn had scored double-digit points in 10 straight games heading in to the conference road opener at USF. But the junior was held to her lowest scoring total of the season in the loss at USF as she battled foul trouble, finishing with five points. three-point outing last season against SMU. .She has scored 20 or more points in 20 career games at Memphis. DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR WRIGHT With the Tigers’ guards struggling to score, Memphis looked to its posts for some offensive help in the Temple game. Junior forward Brianna Wright stepped up with a season-best 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting. She also added 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season and her fifth double-digit rebounding night. (12/28/14) MEMPHIS FINISHES FALL SEMESTER IN A FLOURISH IN THE CLASSROOM The Tigers had a strong finish to the fall semester. Six players finished with a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the semester (Cheyenne Creighton, Asianna FuquaBey, Ariel Hearn, Amber Holmes, Mooriah Rowser, Brianna Wright) and freshman Amber Holmes posted the highest team GPA of the fall at 3.87. The Tigers’ fall team GPA was 3.087. GETTING OVER THE HUMP IN CLOSE GAMES A young Tiger squad is still learning how to pull out close games. Of the Tigers’ seven losses, five have been by single digits, including the one-point loss to Temple on Sunday. Those five Memphis single digit losses have added up to a combined 23 points. Memphis is 2-5 in single-digit games. The Tigers’ last win by single digits? The 62-61 win over Central Michigan. FUQUA-BEY USING FREE THROW LINE TO ELEVATE SCORING THREAT Junior forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey has worked hard to improve at the free-throw line. As a freshman, the Chicago native shot 54.3 percent at the stripe. This season, she is shooting 83.9 percent. The last time Memphis had two players with double digit rebounds before the Temple game? Another game where Memphis had a halftime lead, but lost -- Minnesota. ANOTHER NON-CONFERENCE MARK OVER .500 FOR MCFERRIN’S TIGERS Memphis has never finished under .500 in league play since McFerrin took over prior to the 2008-09 season (including post-season tournaments) and the Tigers took a step toward making that a seventh straight occurrence by closing regular season nonconference play with a 6-5 mark. FUQUA-BEY LOOKING FOR DOUBLE DIGITS Asianna Fuqua-Bey has worked hard on becoming a force for the Tigers’ offense. In the last five games, she has been Memphis’ second-leading scorer with 10.4 ppg and is 21-for-40 (52.5) from the field. She also has the second-highest number of free-throw attempts in the last five games, knocking down 10-of-13 shots (76.9) to help Memphis to a 4-1 record in its last five outings of the non-conference slate. WILDER-COCHRAN NAMED TO HONOR ROLL Sophomore point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran was named to the American weekly honor roll after the win at Georgetown. Wilder-Cochran scored 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting and tied a career-high with five steals for the second time in three games. She is the second Tiger this season to earn a spot on the weekly honor roll, joining Mooriah Rowser. DOUBLE DIGIT REBOUNDS FOR PAIR OF TIGERS Asianna Fuqua-Bey and Brianna Wright each grabbed 13 rebounds in the loss to Minnesota. Fuqua-Bey had 10 offensive rebounds in the game on Sunday, becoming just the ninth player in school history to grab 10 offensive rebounds in a game. Rowser is averaging 19.5 ppg and is shooting 38.7 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range in the early going. She is also the team’s leading free-throw attempts leader, going 12-for-15 (80.0 percent) in the early going. HEARN HITS 1,000TH CAREER POINT AND 100TH CAREER TRIPLE Junior guard Ariel Hearn opened her 2014-15 scoring line with a pair of three point field goals in the first half against Missouri State. The second triple pushed her past the 1,000 career point mark, making her the 23rd player in school history to score a grand or more. She added a pair of threes in the second half, which gave her the 100th triple of her three-year Tiger career. She is just the ninth player in school history to connect on 100 career threes. Getting to her 1,000th career point in her 64th career game means that Hearn was the fifth-fastest in Memphis history to get to the 1,000 career point mark. She tied the mark set by Tamika Whitmore, who went on to become the second Memphis women’s basketball player drafted in to the WNBA, earning WNBA All-Star honors while she played in Indiana.
