BACK-TO-BACK ROAD GAMES FOR TIGERS Memphis starts a two-game road swing with the Sunday contest at Temple. Memphis will face Cincinnati in Ohio on Wednesday night before returning home to host No. 4 Louisville, Feb. 16th. FIRST TRIP TO PHILLY This will be Memphis’ first-ever game at Temple. The Owls lead the overall series with Memphis on the strength of a 63-56 win in Memphis back in December in both team’s American Athletic Conference opener. In that game, Memphis had cut the deficit to one at 55-54 with 1:33 left in the game, but Temple closed the final minute and a half of the game on an 8-2 run to put the game away. The Tigers’ posts got in foul trouble in the first half of that game, opening the way for freshman Taylor Williams to step into the lineup. Williams finished with 12 points off the bench and one game later against UConn, became a member of the Tigers’ starting lineup. MATCH-UP OF FRESHMAN POINT GUARDS The Sunday match-up with Temple will pit two of the American Athletic Conference’s candidates for post-season freshman team honors against one another. Temple is led by freshman Feyonda Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald leads the team in scoring with 12.9 ppg and has dished out 90 assists against 72 turnovers in her first collegiate campaign. She also ranks third on the team with 29 three-point field goals made and is a 74.3 percent free-throw shooter. Memphis counters with freshman point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran. Wilder-Cochran is tied for second on the Memphis roster with 8.8 ppg, but leads the team with 93 assists against 82 turnovers. A 77.3 percent free-throw shooter, Wilder-Cochran has attempted 110 tries from the stripe already this year and is coming off a 15-point effort in the loss to USF, Wednesday night. That was Wilder-Cochran’s 10th double-digit scoring outing of the season, her first in four games for Memphis. She missed the UCF game after sliding head-first into the sideline boards early in the second half at Louisville. She returned for the Tigers’ game at Rutgers, but was held to seven points in her return. The 15 points against USF was one point off her career high. SWAIN STEPS IN TO STARTING LINEUP Senior Jasbriell Swain is an interesting story for the Tigers. After playing three seasons at Binghamton University, Swain moved back to Memphis and enrolled at the University of Memphis to help take care of her family. A member of the student body, she went through the walk-on process at Memphis after fall classes started. She made the Tiger roster and the coaching staff filed an appeal for her to play this season rather than wait out the NCAA transfer period. Her appeal was granted after the first two Tigers’ games of the year, and she suited up for Memphis in a road win at Wright State where she stepped in and grabbed 16 rebounds. One game later, the team was finishing its team meal the night before a road game at UALR when the coaching staff surprised Swain by putting her on scholarship. Swain made her first career start with the Tigers on Wednesday night, playing a career-high 35 minutes and finishing with six rebounds and two assists. WILDER-COCHRAN LOOKING FOR A PAIR OF HEARN’S FRESHMAN RECORDS Melissa McFerrin has a true freshman running the point for a second straight season. Last year, Ariel Hearn was pressed in to duty when Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir broke her hand. Hearn ended up finishing with 109 assists, a new Memphis freshman record, and also set a new freshman record for single season freethrows made (109).

Wilder-Cochran is on pace to potentially rewrite both of those records. The Hoover, Ala., native has 93 assists and has made 85 free-throws with seven regular season games remaining. HOPE SETS CAREER MARK IN REBOUNDS; MOVES INTO CAREER TOP 10 IN BLOCKED SHOTS Senior post Pa’Sonna Hope finished the USF game with a career-high 16 rebounds, including nine offensive, on Wednesday night. Hope also had three blocked shots in the loss, which moved her in to the career top 10 at Memphis. In her just second season with the Tigers, Hope now has 56 blocked shots, which puts her in a tie for ninth in the Memphis record book with Kitty Allen (199397). Hope has been coming off the bench for the Tigers in the last two games, giving Memphis some rebounding from the bench and helping to keep her foul numbers down. UPDATED NCAA RPI RELEASED With a Memphis goal of qualifying for the post season out there, the Tigers have to do two things. 1) stay at .500 or over .500 2) keep their RPI up. The latest NCAA RPI was posted Monday: No. 4 Connecticut No. 6 Louisville No. 47 Rutgers No. 60 Temple No. 71 SMU No. 84 USF No. 118 Cincinnati No. 124 Memphis No. 174 UCF No. 266 Houston ROWSER FINDING HER STROKE Mooriah Rowser continues to come on strong in the latter half of the season. The redshirt freshman has been in rehab-mode since last November, coming back from knee surgery. It appears she is getting comfortable again. In the last four games, she has attempted 40 shots, and has knocked down 19 of them (47.5 percent). Coming in to the game against Temple, she has connected on multiple three-point field goals in back to back games. She hit her first career three just nine games ago, and now has hit four in the last two games. HEARN LOGGING THE MILES Sophomore guard Ariel Hearn leads the American Athletic Conference in minutes played with 37.0 minutes a night on the floor. She has played 38 or more minutes in five of the last seven games (one of which went to overtime), including a full-game, 40-minute effort in the Tigers’ win vs. UCF. HEARN HELD TO SINGLE DIGITS AT RUTGERS It doesn’t happen often to the sophomore guard from nearby Arlington, but Ariel Hearn was held to single digits for just the fourth time this season in the loss at Rutgers. She has scored double-digit points 19 times this year (and 42 for her Tiger career). She has gotten to double-digits in three of Memphis’ last four games. The four opponents to hold Hearn to single digits? East Tennessee State in the season-opener (9), Syracuse in the Paradise Jam tournament (9), at UConn (7) and at Rutgers (8). The East Tennessee State game is the only time she has been held to single digits in a home game. Hearn has posted 20+ point games eight times already this season and now has 12 20+ point games for her career. GETTING ON THE GLASS Memphis was out-rebounded in the first meeting with Temple by nine (43-34). That included a 10-1 early edge on the glass for the Owls. The Tigers will have to get that number turned around for a tough road game. Memphis has been

6th Season at Memphis

McFERRIN’S RECORD BY OPPONENT

Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basketball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s modern history. McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors. Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minnesota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player Lindsey

Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten championship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationallyranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.

out-rebounded in eight of 11 conference contests this year. Memphis is 7-1 when they out-rebound their opponents and 3-11 when they don’t. .In league play, the Tigers are being out-rebounded by a -3.1 margin. HEARN WORKING TOWARD 900TH CAREER POINT; ALREADY IN CAREER THREE POINT FIELD GOALS MADE TOP 10 .Through 55 career games (52 games as a starter), sophomore guard Ariel Hearn has been a consistent scorer. She is averaging 15.2 ppg for her career (17.2 ppg this year). After scoring 16 points in the loss to USF, Hearn now has 837 career points. She is also six steals shy of 100 picks for her career. Hearn is scoring a bunch of her points this year from beyond the three-point line compared to last season. Last year, the freshman was running the point and scored most of her points on the drive and at the free-throw line. This year, she is spotting up from beyond the arc more often, scoring 33.8 percent of her made field goals from beyond the arc. She is just four triples shy of moving into the single season top 10 and already ranks ninth in career threepoint field goals made with 75. She has 392 career points through 55 games heading in to the rematch with Temple. Fuqua-Bey moved in to the Memphis starting lineup as a freshman last year just 14 games in to her Tiger career. She has now started 42 straight games for the Tigers. FRESHMAN POINT GUARD PUSHING TOWARD 100 Freshman point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran is seven assists shy of the 100 assist mark. Only two other freshmen in Memphis history have dished out 100 or more assists in a season. The first was Ruth Ann Forsythe in 1983-84. The second was Ariel Hearn, last season. Hearn owns the freshman single season assist record with 109 assists last year. Wilder-Cochran has 93 assists against 82 turnovers.

WILLIAMS PASSES 100TH POINT Freshman Taylor Williams was signed at Memphis as a guard. With a shallow Tiger front court, the Kansas City native has been playing at the three and four spots for the Tigers this season. She made her first collegiate career start in the Tigers’ home game against No. 1 UConn back in Memphis’ second conference game of the season. Her first bucket in the game at Rutgers on Saturday was a three-point field goal which pushed her past the 100 career point mark. She has knocked down 16 three-point field goals in her first year of college basketball. Nine more puts her in the Memphis freshman single season top 10. DOUBLE DIGIT BOARDS FOR FUQUA-BEY Sophomore forward Asia Fuqua-Bey finished the game at Rutgers with 10 rebounds, her fourth double-digit rebounding effort of the season and her second against Rutgers. POWELL PROVIDING PUNCH FROM THE BENCH Sophomore post Courtney Powell has seen her minutes increase in the last few games. After playing a career-high 22 minutes in the game at Louisville (she eventually was one of three post players to foul out of the game), she played 17 minutes on the road at Rutgers, finishing with five re-

bounds. In the last three games, she is averaging 4.7 rebounds a night.

HEARN LOOKING FOR 100TH CAREER PICK Ariel Hearn is known as a scorer. Last year, she was known for her ability to drive the ball and score through contact, this year, it’s for her work from the three-point line. STRIVE FOR SEVENTY Memphis loves to run offense. When the Tigers score 70 or more points, they are 8-1. When they are held to 69 or fewer points, they are 2-11. OVERTIME? SURE, WHY NOT? Memphis has played five overtime games already this season, including two double-overtime games. The Tigers are 1-1 in double overtime (both road games) and are 2-1 in overtime games with just one extra session (2-0 at home and 0-1 on the road). Memphis is now 13-12 in overtime games in school history and is 7-3 in overtime under Melissa McFerrin. Wisconsin holds the NCAA record for overtime games in a season with seven in 1999, fyi.

FIRST WIN OVER RANKED OPPONENT Memphis brings a three-game winning streak in to Wednesday’s match-up with UConn after upsetting No. 23 Rutgers, 74-73, in overtime in the Fieldhouse on Tuesday night. That win was the first over a ranked team for Memphis since a 64-58 win over No. 20 DePaul on Jan. 26, 2003 (also a conference game). The win improved Memphis to 2-0 all-time against teams ranked No. 23 in the country and was the program’s 19th win over a ranked opponent in 93 tries. ANOTHER FIRST FOR THE SEASON The win over Rutgers was the first time this season the Tigers trailed at the half and came back for the victory. At one point, Memphis trailed by 11 points in the first half. That’s the biggest margin of deficit erased by Memphis this season. The previous best was 10 in the first game of the season against East Tennessee State. Memphis is 1-8 when trailing at the half this season. HOPE MISSES BULK OF HOUSTON GAME Senior Pa’Sonna Hope tried to play through illness when Memphis hosted Houston, but could manage just six minutes before the Tiger coaching staff put her on the bench. The single-digit minutes were the fewest of her career and were part of a four-game, double-digit scoring streak getting snapped against Houston. FUQUA-BEY EARNS REPEAT AMERICAN ATHLETIC WEEKLY HONOR ROLL Asia Fuqua-Bey was named to The American’s weekly honor roll after hitting the game-winning freethrows in overtime vs. No. 23 Rutgers and then leading the Tigers with 18 points in the win over Houston. It was the second time this season for Fuqua-Bey to earn a spot on the American Athletic Conference honor roll. She was also named to the honor roll Dec. 16th.
