UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

SERIES HISTORY -- TIGERS VS SMU This is the 14th meeting between Memphis and SMU. The Mustangs lead the overall series, 9-4, and have won four straight against Memphis, including a 60-53 win in Memphis on Monday night. Memphis’ last win against SMU came in a conference tournament. The Tigers defeated SMU in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Conference USA tournament in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse, 77-67. TOURNAMENT TIGERS This is Memphis’ second year in the American, so the Tigers have some degree of familiarity with Mohegan Sun Arena. Like last year, Memphis is the No. 7 seed in the tournament field and will again be playing the second game on the first day of tournament play. The Tigers are hoping the comparisons stop there. Playing No. 10 seeded Houston last year, the Tigers were tied at the half, but could not stop Marche’ Amerson, who finished with 24 points, including a 14-for23 stint at the free-throw line. Ariel Hearn hit four threes late in the game to close the gap, but Memphis fell in the opening round game, 73-67. Memphis is trying to get past the first round in a conference tournament for the first time in three years. In the Tigers’ last year in Conference USA, they were upended by Southern Miss in the first round. The last time Memphis went past the first round was in 2012, when they hosted the C-USA tournament and received a first round bye. They then downed SMU, 77-67, in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals, where they lost to Tulane. That 2012 game was the last, and only, time Memphis and SMU have squared off in a conference championship tournament. HEARN TO 14TH ON MEMPHIS CAREER SCORING LIST Junior guard Ariel Hearn scored 14 points in the loss to SMU on Monday night, which moved her to 14th on the Memphis scoring charts with 1,453 career points. Hearn is currently the second-highest scoring Tiger coached by Melissa McFerrin. Former teammate Nicole Dickson (2009-13) is 10th on the all-time points list and leads all Memphis players who have played for Coach McFerrin. Hearn is trying to become just the 13th Tiger in Memphis’ 43 year basketball history to score 1,500 or more career points. WORKING WITHOUT WILDER-COCHRAN It’s been a physically tough year for sophomore point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran, who played in all 30 games last year as a freshman, earning American all-freshmen team honors. On the first day of fall camp, Wilder-Cochran suffered a leg injury and missed a substantial portion of the pre-season camp. Then in the loss at USF on New Year’s Eve, she suffered a hand injury that cost her three games (ECU, at UCF and at Tulsa). She returned and played the next six games with two of her fingers still taped together from her hand injury. Then at Temple, she was tracking down her own missed shot when she collided with an Owl player, suffering another injury. She missed three more games (vs. UConn, at Houston, vs. UCF), then played one game against Tulane before missing the three games (Tulsa, at UConn, vs. SMU). In total, she has played in just one of the last seven games for Memphis and has played in nine conference games. That has meant more time at the point for Ariel Hearn and the shortening of the guard rotation, which already lost freshman Damonique Miller just a

couple of games in to the season due to a shoulder injury. PAINT POINTS The challenge for the Tigers in the last three outings has been to establish a presence in the paint. In six of the last nine games, Memphis has been even (vs. USF) or outscored in the paint. On Monday against SMU, the Tigers were outscored 26-14 in the paint, with 13 of those points coming off the bench in the form of freshman Alicia Froling. Counting a lopsided road loss at UConn, the Tigers have been outscored in the paint by 60 points in the last three games. Memphis freshman Cheyenne Creighton may be able to help offset that paint points challenge. She scored a career-best 12 points against UCF and followed that with a 10-point night at Tulane. Memphis out-scored UCF in the paint in the win and out-scored Tulane by four in the paint in a road loss. Memphis has outscored its opposition in the paint nine times this year. The Tigers are 5-4 when holding an edge in the paint. LOOKING TO SNAP A STREAK Memphis is hoping being back to 0-0 resonates with the Tigers, who have lost four straight heading in to the conference tournament and who are 2-7 in their last nine games. The four-game losing streak ties the longest of the season for Memphis. The Tigers lost four straight back in November, but two of those four losses (Minnesota, UALR) came to teams projected to make the NCAA tournament. Memphis last lost five in a row last season, suffering a February setback. HEARN LOOKING FOR 100TH ASSIST With the injuries to Breigha Wilder-Cochran, junior guard Ariel Hearn has had to man the point for the Tigers. In addition to being the team’s leading scorer, leading three-point shooter and third-leading rebounder, she is also leading the team with 96 assists on the season (and 54 steals). If she can get four more assists in the conference tournament, she will give Memphis a 100-assist player for a third straight season. Hearn handed out 109 assists in both her freshman and sophomore years, and Wilder-Cochran dished out 125 assists last year. If Hearn can get her 100th assist, she will become just the third Tiger in school history to post three straight 100-assist seasons. Only Nicole Murry (199394) and Yolanda Reed (1997-2000) have had three straight seasons with triple digit assists. Three Consecutive 100-Assist Seasons Nicole Murry 1993-94...........................................................94 1994-95.........................................................164 1995-96.........................................................182 1996-97.........................................................166 Yolanda Reed 1997-98.........................................................141 1998-99.........................................................135 1999-2000.....................................................122 Ariel Hearn 2012-13.........................................................109 2013-14.........................................................109 2014-15...........................................................96 ELMORE TRYING TO PROVIDE BENCH SPARK In the game against SMU on Monday night, freshman guard Brea Elmore played a season-high 30 minutes. She tied a season-high with five rebounds, adding an assist and two steals to go with seven points. Elmore has hit a three-point field goal in two straight games and in three of the last four. The Tigers need the points off the bench, as the

TEAM HONORS HANDED OUT TUESDAY NIGHT The Tigers held their annual ‘year-end’ banquet on Tuesday night. The team honors were handed out in a banquet in front of the Fast Break Club, the official booster club of the University of Memphis women’s basketball program. The boosters sent the Tigers on their way to the conference tournament with a handful of honors handed out: Les Phillips Memorial Award -- Mooriah Rowser Most Improved -- Cheyenne Creighton Best Rebounder -- Brianna Wright Most Valuable Defensive -- Ariel Hearn Most Valuable Offensive -- Ariel Hearn Coaches Award -- Taylor Williams The Tigers then turned around and gave their coaching staff their own awards to wrap up the banquet. You can see the banquet photos on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/MemphisWBKB.

LOOKING FOR BENCHMARK POINTS Mooriah Rowser and Asianna Fuqua-Bey are informally in a race to be the next Tiger to 1,000 career points. Neither will get there this year, but both could pass other benchmarks on their way this season. Fuqua-Bey needs five more points for her 700th career point, while Rowser is 19 points shy of her 600th point. Junior post Brianna Wright will likely technically get the 1,000 career points before either of her teammates does. Wright has scored 856 points in college play, including her freshman year at South Alabama and her sophomore season at Chipola Junior College. FUQUA-BEY JOINS 600-600 CLUB In the overtime win against East Carolina back in January, junior post Asianna Fuqua-Bey became just the 25th player in Memphis history to have over 500 career points and 500 career rebounds. The junior from Chicago has moved up to the 600 Club after grabbing nine rebounds in the loss to SMU Monday night. Fuqua-Bey is now one of just 17 players in school history to post both 600 career points and 600 career rebounds. FIVE TIGERS EARN AMERICAN WEEKLY HONOR ROLL SLOTS DURING SEASON Memphis had five different players earn American Weekly Honor Roll mentions during the season. Mooriah Rowser got the first honor (11/17/14) after scoring 21 points in the season opening win over Missouri State, then added a second honor after tying a career-best 24 points in a road win at Houston (2/17/15). Asianna Fuqua-Bey earned one honor (1/12/15) after scoring a season-best 18 points in a road loss at Tulsa and Breigha Wilder-Cochran added one honor (12/15/14) after helping Memphis to wins over Central Michigan and at Georgetown. Ariel Hearn earned a trio of spots (1/15, 1/26 and 2/2/15) and freshman Cheyenne Creighton became the last Tiger recognized on the weekly honor roll after back to back double digits games against UCF and Tulane. STRETCHING THE DEFENSE Junior guard Ariel Hearn has developed a reputation for not being afraid to shoot the three. She has landed 158 triples for her career and already ranks sixth on the Memphis career list in three point field goals made. She needs just two more to move to the top five all-time (where fellow Memphis native Paris Leonard, UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

2005-09) is currently sitting with 160 makes.

RECORD BREAKDOWN

POWELL PROVIDING POW When Memphis needs some effort on the glass or energy in the paint, look for junior post Courtney Powell to earn some time. In a road win at Houston, Powell stepped in as both Asianna Fuqua-Bey and Brianna Wright had foul trouble. Powell provided five rebounds an seven points in 24 minutes off the bench. In the game at Connecticut, not much was working for the Tigers, but Powell came in and grabbed a career-high three steals. Two nights later, she came off the bench against SMU’s sizeable front line and provided five rebounds in 15 minutes, four off the offensive glass. On the year, she averages 2.1 points and 2.6 rebounds a game, but because she brings energy and effort when she’s in, she has played in 26 of 29 games for Memphis. Powell played sparingly as a freshman behind Nicole Dickson, who ranks 10th in Memphis history in scoring. Last year, Powell worked behind senior post Pa’Sonna Hope. In the second game of this season, she posted her first career double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Wright finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds and tied a career high with four steals in 24 minutes of play. The four steals pushed the junior past the 100 steal mark for her entire collegiate career (including one year in junior college at Chipola Junior College). She has also moved within 154 points of scoring 1,000 total career collegiate points (again, including her totals from Chipola JC) heading in to the second Tulsa contest.

NO SENIOR DISCOUNTS Memphis does not have a senior on its roster, so it has fallen to the junior trio of Ariel Hearn, Asianna Fuqua-Bey and Mooriah Rowser to serve as the Tigers’ captains. LEARNING TO WIN CLOSE GAMES A young Tiger squad is still learning how to pull out close games. Of the Tigers’ 16 losses, eight have been by single digits, including the seven point loss to SMU in the regular season finale. Those eight Memphis single digit losses have added up to a combined 37 points. Memphis is 6-9 in single-digit games this season. MEMPHIS FINISHES FALL SEMESTER IN A FLOURISH IN THE CLASSROOM The Tigers had a strong finish to the fall semester. Six players finished with a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the semester (Cheyenne Creighton, Asianna FuquaBey, Ariel Hearn, Amber Holmes, Mooriah Rowser, Brianna Wright) and freshman Amber Holmes posted the highest team GPA of the fall at 3.87. The Tigers’ fall team GPA was 3.087.

CAREER NIGHT FOR CREIGHTON VS UCF Freshman forward Cheyenne Creighton got the Memphis bench powered up early in the win over UCF, Wednesday night. Creighton played a career-high 31 minutes, which was much-needed for the Tigers as junior forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey played just three minutes in the opening half due to foul trouble and finished with just 14 minutes in the game and four fouls. Creighton posted a career-best 12 points on 6-for-13 shooting, adding four rebounds, one assist and a block. Behind her effort off the bench, the Tiger bench outscored UCF, 27-4. HEARN GOES FOR 30 IN LOSS Ariel Hearn posted her first career 30-point game in the 57-53 loss to USF. That 30 points was the best single scoring game total for a player in the American Athletic Conference since league play began and was the first time a Memphis player has hit the 30-plus point mark since Nicole Dickson scored 34 in a win over Wright State back in January of 2013. Hearn’s 30-point effort earned her a spot on the American Athletic Conference Weekly honor roll for a third time this season. DOUBLE DOUBLE-DIGIT REBOUNDING The Temple game marked the second time this year that the Tigers have had two players post double-digit rebounds. In addition to Brianna Wright’s 14 rebounds against Temple, Asianna Fuqua-Bey added 12 rebounds, her second consecutive double-digit rebounding night of the season. The last time Memphis had two players with double digit rebounds before the Temple game? Another game where Memphis had a halftime lead, but lost -- Minnesota. Double Digit Offensive Rebounds in a Game 12 - Diana Gray vs. McNeese State, Dec. 2, 1989 12 - Glynetha Davis vs. Virginia Tech, Jan. 11, 1989 11 - Jasmine Lee vs. Chattanooga, Mar. 15, 2012 11 - Keeta Matthews vs. DePaul, Feb. 19, 1995 11 - Keeta Matthews vs. UT Martin, Dec. 1, 1993 10 - Asia Fuqua-Bey vs. Minnesota, Nov. 23, 2014 10 - Jasmine Lee vs. East Carolina, Jan. 15, 2012 10 - Paris Leonard vs. Austin Peay, Nov. 25, 2005 10 - Connie Hibbler vs. Florida State, Jan. 26, 1987 HEARN HITS 1,000TH CAREER POINT AND 100TH CAREER TRIPLE Junior guard Ariel Hearn opened her 2014-15 scoring line with a pair of three point field goals in the first half against Missouri State. The second triple pushed her past the 1,000 career point mark, making her the 23rd player in school history to score a grand or more. She added a pair of threes in the second half, which gave her the 100th triple of her three-year Tiger career. She is just the ninth player in school history to connect on 100 career threes. Getting to her 1,000th career point in her 64th career game means that Hearn was the fifth-fastest in Memphis history to get to the 1,000 career point mark. She tied the mark set by Tamika Whitmore, who went on to become the second Memphis women’s basketball player drafted in to the WNBA, earning WNBA All-Star honors while she played in Indiana, also playing in Connecticut for the Connecticut Sun. Fastest to 1,000 Career Points LaTonya Johnson -- 54 games Keeta Matthews -- 55 games Brittany Carter -- 60 games Kitty Allen -- 62 games Ariel Hearn -- 64 games Tamika Whitmore -- 64 games
