Antonio Barton scored a career-high 24 points, including 20 in the second half, and No. 21/22 Memphis survived a three-point shooting onslaught to defeat Tennessee State 91-86 at FedExForum. After defeating Lipscomb 88-70 Dec. 30, Memphis again found itself in back-and-forth affair, as Tennessee State seemed to have a long range answer for every Tiger run. Both teams shot above 50 percent in the first half, as Tennessee State connected on 10-of-11 three-point attempts in the first 20 minutes of play. Memphis countered with solid offensive sets in the halfcourt and used its advantage inside to counter the shooting barrage. Led by Tarik Black’s 15 first-half points off the bench, Memphis came back to tie the game at 43-all at halftime after trailing 35-28 with less than eight minutes to play. Will Barton also added 10 in the first half. Tennessee State didn’t slow down after halftime, as the visiting Tigers came out firing in the second half and put Memphis on its heels after a layup from Kenny Moore put Tennessee State ahead 60-52 with 13:06 to play. On the next Memphis possession, the Tigers swung the ball around the perimeter before Joe Jackson found Antonio Barton open at the top of the key. Barton took the pass and drilled the open look, and then did the same thing on the next two Memphis trips. Barton’s three-straight trifectas brought Memphis to within one at 62-61. Both Tigers went back and forth for the remainder of the game — there were nine lead changes in the contest — before Antonio Barton’s fifth triple with 2:34 remaining gave Memphis the lead for good at 82-79. A three-pointer by Moore with 22 seconds left brought Tennessee State back to within 87-86, but Memphis scored four-straight points to finish the game. Moore led the three-point onslaught for Tennessee State, as the forward made 5-of-6 from deep en route to scoring 22 points. Wil Peters (17), Robert Covington (16), Patrick Miller (12) and Jacquan Nobles (11) all finished in double figures for Tigers, which was seeking their first ever victory over a ranked foe.

Tennessee made 12-of-21 from long range and led from start to finish in a 104-84 victory over Memphis at Thompson-Boling Arena. Will Coleman scored 17 points and Will Barton added 14 of his own, but the Tigers struggled from the field (30of-65) and the charity stripe (14-of-26) and couldn’t mount a comeback against the hot-shooting Volunteers. Melvin Goins started the barrage of trifectas for Tennessee just 44 seconds into the game when he took a pass from Scotty Hopson and drained the triple for an early 3-0 advantage. Memphis fought back to narrow the deficit to 14-10 after a triple from Charles Carmouche at the 15:40 mark, but Tennessee responded with 10-0 run to seize control of the contest and never looked back. Despite the Tigers closing the first half on a 7-0 run sparked by five points from D.J. Stephens, the Volunteers took a 49-34 lead into the break. Freshmen Tobias Harris led the way for Tennessee, scoring 17 points and grabbing 13 points in a double-double effort, as the Volunteers outrebounded the Tigers 41-33 and scored 42 points in the paint. Scotty Hopson went 6-of12 from the field en route to a 16-point performance, while Goins made all four of his attempts from deep on the way to scoring 15 points. Stephens finished with nine points and six rebounds in the losing effort, while Drew Barham and Antonio Barton finished with nine points and eight points, respectively. Memphis committed 16 turnovers which led to 23 Tennessee points and allowed the Volunteers to score 19 points in transition. Tennessee shot 53.7 percent from the floor and 57.1 percent from the arc. Memphis hit 46.2 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from the three-point line.

Despite going scoreless from the floor for the final 5:23, Memphis scrapped out a 61-58 victory over East Carolina in the Conference USA opener for both teams. After allowing 104 points in a Jan. 5 loss at Tennessee, defense was a focal point, as Memphis held the Pirates to 5-of-17 shooting in the opening half. The Tigers out-rebounded ECU 21-11 en route to a 33-21 advantage at the half. A slow second-half start again proved troublesome for Memphis. The Pirates outscored the Tigers 28-16 in the first 12 minutes to tie the game at 49-all. East Carolina hit 5-of-8 from beyond the arc in its run. The Pirates briefly held the lead at 52-51 after an andone dunk from Darrius Morrow at the 7:16 mark. Memphis regained the lead on a pair of free throws from Tarik Black on its next possession, but again found itself tied with East Carolina at 56-all with 3:51 to play. Memphis, however, is no stranger to late-game drama, as seven of its 12 victories have been by nine or fewer points, and the Tigers again rallied late for the win against the Pirates. Wesley Witherspoon stepped to the line with 2:54 to play and swished two free throws through to put Memphis ahead for good at 58-56. Free throws from Antonio Barton and Joe Jackson on the Tigers’ next two possessions gave Memphis a 61-58 lead with :03 left. Chris Crawford then intercepted a pass intended to set up Brock Young for a game-tying three-pointer to seal the victory. Black finished with 12 points and seven rebounds while battling foul trouble throughout the second half. Coleman finished with 11 points, including going 7-of-12 from the charity stripe, as the senior finished in double figures for the second-straight game. Morrow led the way for the Pirates, finishing with 17 points and eight rebounds in a game-high 33 minutes. Jamar Abrams (15) and Young (10) were the only other ECU players to finish in double figures.
