UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS

SERIES HISTORY -- TIGERS VS EAST CAROLINA This is the 25th meeting between Memphis and East Carolina. The Tigers used an overtime period to steal a win in the first meeting with the Pirates this season to take a 13-11 lead in the overall series. Ariel Hearn scored 26 points off the bench for Memphis in that win, while Brianna Wright scored a pair of free throws with 0.9 seconds left in regulation to force an overtime period. In overtime, Memphis trailed by four when freshman Brea Elmore drained a three to cut the deficit to one. Wright then gave Memphis the lead and Ariel Hearn hit two free throws as the Tigers out-scored ECU 11-8 in the extra period to hang on for the win. Greenville is a tough gym to try to get a road win from. The Tigers are 3-7 all-time in Greenville. They won two in a row there in 2010-11 and 2011-12, but had that two-game win streak snapped in their last appearance in Minges Coliseum, 69-52. While the ECU gym is familiar to some of the Tiger coaching staff, but of the nine Memphis players who suited up in the Tigers’ last appearance in Greenville, just two remain on this year’s roster -- Asianna Fuqua-Bey and Ariel Hearn. Fuqua-Bey finished with 12 points and five rebounds in the last trip to ECU, while Hearn came off the bench for seven points. EARNING TRIPS TO THE LINE In Memphis’ last five games, they have attempted just 68 shots from the free-throw line (13.6/game). The Tiger defense has been a bit more generous, as Memphis’ opposition has attempted 101 shots from the line in that same time frame (20.2/game). Memphis has good free-throw shooters, but they have not been getting many attempts lately. Taylor Williams (81.0 %) has had just three attempts from the line since conference play began, Asia Fuqua-Bey (80.5 %) has had just five attempts (hitting four), in the last three games and Mooriah Rowser (75.5 %) has had just six attempts from the line in the last five games. WRIGHT OFFSETS LOW SCORING NIGHT Brianna Wright posted her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 11 points and 14 rebounds in the win over Cincinnati. Wright’s six consecutive points in the second half were much-needed for Memphis. The 41 points the Tigers scored in the win over Cincinnati were the fewest-ever scored by Memphis in a victory. That 41 point mark was just two points from the previous lowest-total points in a win -- 43 in a 43-26 win over Murray State in the 1972-73 season. Wright’s 14 rebounds in the low-scoring win was her seventh double-digit rebounding effort of the season. LAST GAME BEFORE CLASSES BEGIN The University of Memphis classes resume on Tuesday, January 20th, so Sunday’s game at East Carolina will be the last the Tigers play before having to resume balancing the classroom and the practice and playing schedule. Next week is Memphis’ week-day game bye week, meaning while other league teams play a weeknight game, the Tigers will be off until they host Houston, Saturday. TAKING CARE OF THE BASKETBALL In the last five games, Memphis has just one player with more assists than turnovers -- Ariel Hearn (19 assists, 16 turnovers). Every other Tiger has more turnovers, as Memphis has coughed up 91 turnovers in five games (18.2/game). Those free trips have often resulted in points off turnovers for the Memphis opponents. In the last five games, Tiger opponents have outscored Memphis in points off turnovers four times.

BUILDING OFF TOUGH NON-CONFERENCE SLATE Memphis has a 20-win season and a post-season bid as a team goal this year. And the Tigers’ have been well-tested to date, having already faced seven teams in the top 100 in the latest NCAA RPI Report. In all, Memphis will play 12 games this season against teams currently ranked in the top 100. RPI.......................................................... Temple (L, 58-57, 1 game left) FUQUA-BEY NAMED TO WEEKLY HONOR ROLL Junior forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey was named to the American’s weekly honor roll after back-toback double-digit games on the road last week. That marked her fifth and sixth double-digit games this year and just the second time this season she has strung together back-to-back double-digit outings. Her 18 points in the loss at Tulsa was a season-best and missed her career high by just three points. She was 9-for-11 from the field (shooting 81.8 percent) and upped her scoring average to 9.0 ppg for the season. She also added seven rebounds, including five off the offensive glass, in the loss. She has scored double digit points in three straight games one time before (last season). Fuqua-Bey is the fourth different Tiger to earn a weekly honor roll mention this season (Ariel Hearn, Breigha Wilder-Cochran, Mooriah Rowser). HEARN PLAYS FULL 40 Junior guard Ariel Hearn might be feeling the absence of Breigha Wilder-Cochran more than anyone else. With Wilder-Cochran missing the last three games with a hand injury, Hearn has started the last two games at the point. After playing in 40 of 45 minutes in the overtime win over East Carolina, she played 35 of 40 minutes in the win at UCF and in all 40 minutes in the loss at Tulsa. Prior to Wilder-Cochran’s injury, Hearn had played 35 minutes in five of the Tigers’ first 13 games. Since the injury, she has played 35 minutes or more in 3 of 3 games. HEARN LOOKING TO MOVE UP SCORING CHART When Ariel Hearn does reach that 1,300th career point, she will also move to 17th on the Tigers’ career scoring list. She is currently 18th, 42 behind Victoria Crawford’s (2002-2005) mark of 1,299 with 1,257 points heading in to the trip at ECU. Hearn scored her 1,000th career point in the season opener this year, becoming the fifth-fastest player to 1,000 career points in Memphis history. In a pair of games against Cincinnati last year, Hearn scored 18 points and 24 points (21 ppg average), so expect the Bearcat defense to have a plan for her on Wednesday night. BEYOND THE ARC In the Tigers’ first two games of the season, five different players (Hearn, Rowser, Williams, Creighton and Wilder-Cochran) landed a three-point field goal. So imagine the Tiger coaching staff’s surprise to be heading in to game 17 of the season and have just one player with double-digit three point field goals made (Hearn with 37). 71 of Memphis’ 371 field goals made this season

have come from beyond the arc. Last year, Ariel Hearn knocked down 69 triples all on her own. Granted, that just missed a single season school record, but the Tigers’ getting just 19.1 percent of their offense from beyond the arc has slowed down the offense. Speaking of Hearn’s threes, the junior hit 2 of 8 tries from beyond the arc in the loss at Tulsa to move to 133 career three point field goals made, moving her out of a tie for 8th in the school record book (w/ Kelly Herron, 1995-2001) and moving her to 8th place alone. She needs four more to tie Tamika Butler’s (20022006) mark of 137 that currently sits in seventh place. Hearn has taken a huge chunk of her field goal tries from beyond the arc. This year, she has taken 44.7 percent of her shots (101 of 386) from three-point land. As a freshman, she made 26.2 percent (27 of 154) of her attempts there and as a sophomore, 37.3 (69 of 197). HEARN NAMED TO AMERICAN WEEKLY HONOR ROLL Junior guard Ariel Hearn was named to the American Athletic Conference weekly honor roll after scoring 26 points in the overtime win over East Carolina. Hearn passed the 1,200 career point mark in the ECU win and her 26 point effort was her 21st career 20-point game. It was her first 20-plus point game since scoring 20 or more in three straight games (Minnesota, Southern Illinois, UALR). She is the third Tiger to earn a spot on the conference’s weekly honor roll. Mooriah Rowser and Breigha Wilder-Cochran also have earned weekly honors from the American this season. FUQUA-BEY JOINS 500-500 CLUB Junior forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey grabbed eight rebounds in the win over East Carolina on Sunday afternoon. Those eight boards pushed her past 500 for her career, making her just the 25th player in Memphis’ 43-year women’s basketball history to have over 500 career points and 500 career rebounds. Heading in to the first meeting with Cincinnati, Fuqua-Bey has 610 career points and 515 career rebounds. Of her 515 career boards, 60.2 percent (310) have come off the defensive glass. LEARNING TO WIN CLOSE GAMES A young Tiger squad is still learning how to pull out close games. Of the Tigers’ eight losses, five have been by single digits, including the one-point loss to Temple in the conference opener. Those five Memphis single digit losses have added up to a combined 23 points. Memphis is 4-5 in single-digit games following the four-point road win at UCF, last week.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR WRIGHT With the Tigers’ guards struggling to score, Memphis looked to its posts for some offensive help in the Temple game. Junior forward Brianna Wright stepped up with a season-best 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting. She also added 14 rebounds for her third double-double of the season and her fifth double-digit rebounding night. Tiger Double-Doubles Brianna Wright vs. Missouri State, 11 pts, 16 reb (11/14/14) Courtney Powell vs. Samford, 11 pts, 11 reb (11/16/14) Mooriah Rowser vs. SIU, 13 pts, 10 reb (11/26/14) Brianna Wright vs. UALR, 14 pts, 16 reb (11/29/14) Asia Fuqua-Bey vs. MVSU, 12 pts, 12 reb (12/19/14) Brianna Wright vs. Temple, 18 pts, 14 reb. (12/28/14) Brianna Wright vs. Cincinnati, 11 pts, 14 reb. (1/14/15) MEMPHIS FINISHES FALL SEMESTER IN A FLOURISH IN THE CLASSROOM The Tigers had a strong finish to the fall semester. Six players finished with a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the semester (Cheyenne Creighton, Asianna FuquaBey, Ariel Hearn, Amber Holmes, Mooriah Rowser, Brianna Wright) and freshman Amber Holmes posted the highest team GPA of the fall at 3.87. The Tigers’ fall team GPA was 3.087.

FUQUA-BEY USING FREE THROW LINE TO ELEVATE SCORING THREAT Junior forward Asianna Fuqua-Bey has worked hard to improve at the free-throw line. As a freshman, the Chicago native shot 54.3 percent at the stripe. This season, she is shooting 83.9 percent. In addition to Brianna Wright’s 14 rebounds against Temple, Asianna Fuqua-Bey added 12 rebounds, her second consecutive double-digit rebounding night of the season. The last time Memphis had two players with double digit rebounds before the Temple game? Another game where Memphis had a halftime lead, but lost -- Minnesota. ANOTHER NON-CONFERENCE MARK OVER .500 FOR MCFERRIN’S TIGERS Memphis has never finished under .500 in league play since McFerrin took over prior to the 2008-09 season (including post-season tournaments) and the Tigers took a step toward making that a seventh straight occurrence by closing regular season nonconference play with a 6-5 mark. Wilder-Cochran scored 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting and tied a career-high with five steals for the second time in three games. She is the second Tiger this season to earn a spot on the weekly honor roll, joining Mooriah Rowser. DOUBLE DIGIT REBOUNDS FOR PAIR OF TIGERS Asianna Fuqua-Bey and Brianna Wright each grabbed 13 rebounds in the loss to Minnesota. Fuqua-Bey had 10 offensive rebounds in the game on Sunday, becoming just the ninth player in school history to grab 10 offensive rebounds in a game. She is the first Tiger since Jasmine Lee to grab double-digit offensive rebounds in a game. HEARN HITS 1,000TH CAREER POINT AND 100TH CAREER TRIPLE Junior guard Ariel Hearn opened her 2014-15 scoring line with a pair of three point field goals in the first half against Missouri State. The second triple pushed her past the 1,000 career point mark, making her the 23rd player in school history to score a grand or more. She added a pair of threes in the second half, which gave her the 100th triple of her three-year Tiger career. She is just the ninth player in school history to connect on 100 career threes. Getting to her 1,000th career point in her 64th career game means that Hearn was the fifth-fastest in Memphis history to get to the 1,000 career point mark. She tied the mark set by Tamika Whitmore, who went on to become the second Memphis women’s basketball player drafted in to the WNBA, earning WNBA All-Star honors while she played in Indiana.
