THE COACHING STAFF PETER BERMEL Head Coach Memphis State soccer and Peter Bermel have become synonymous as they enter their sixth season together as a varsity sport and head coach. Bermel came to MSU in 1977 and started soccer as a club sport. After five years, soccer was promoted to an intercollegiate level in 1982. Since then, Bermel has had just one losing season and has compiled a 53-39-11 record during his tenure. A native of Arnhem, Holland, Bermel came to the United States in 1964. He started playing soccer at the age of eight, and played international soccer against the likes of Germany and England. After initially living in Dallas upon his arrival in the U.S., he moved to Memphis in 1966. In 1970, he became involved in Memphis' youth soccer league, where he served as both a referee and coach until 1986. He is also a past president of the Adult Amatuer League in Memphis. An active sportsman, Peter has also been active in Formula Ford auto racing, judo, cycling, and sailing. Bermel and his wife, Clare, have three children, Erich, 18, Jeffrey, 18, and Andrew, 7.

1987 TIGER SOCCER PREVIEW Coach Peter Bermel's fifth season at Memphis State was his best year, as he guided his Tigers to a 14-4-2 mark and also to the Metro Conference Invitational title. The 1986 season brought a lot of excitement to the soccer program, but this season could be a year that Coach Bermel and his players may never forget. Bermel has been building his team with highly talented players since soccer became a varsity sport in 1982. The Tigers welcome back nine lettermen this year after losing five to graduation. Players not returning include the team's second and third leading scorers, Ross Kuns and Tony Bridges, along with Ron Ferrara, Pat Fischer and Mike Kauker, who will join former Tiger Paulo Aur as an assistant to Bermel. Of the returning players, last year's top scorer Donal McDonagh and forward John Cooke assume the leadership roles on the team. After an injury-filled 1986 season, E.J. Gilley returns as the top goalkeeper with junior Matt Price backing him up. Price did an excellent job of filling in at goal, when Gilley was lost for the season because of a leg injury. Coach Bermel is excited about the newcomers this season. The defender positions are much improved with the additions of Karl Spilker, Jeff Konieczny, Johnny Norris and Scott Turner. They join returners Jimmy Holland, and George Musicante as contenders for the two starting spots. Memphis State is expected to get more goal production from its group of talented attackers. McDonagh, a junior, seems to have the starting midfielder position nailed down, however, newcomers Greg Locks and Jon Goad will see some playing time as well. David Tappan, Troy Piel, Rob! Kauker and Tony Melkent will also see action at midfield this season. Last year, Kuns and McDonagh combined for 48 points at the forward positions. This year, German import Morten Akerfors and newcomer Trevor Buckland head a list of seven players expected to see a lot of playing time. Cooke, a senior and Memphis State's all-time leading scorer, will add depth and experience along with sophomore David Poczobut, freshman Rob Allen, senior Jeff Breslau and Sergio Musicante. As Memphis State's talent gets richer, the schedule gets tougher. The Tigers are considered one of the more improved teams in the country, and they will get the chance to prove it as they play such soccer giants as Indiana, Evansville, Alabama A&M, North Texas State and Western Kentucky. Ten exciting home games will be featured beginning with the opener on September 4 against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. With the soccer program growing by leaps and bounds, who knows where the Tigers will end up this year?

21 - ROB ALLEN Freshman * Forward * 6-0 * 155 Jackson, Tennessee Comes to MSU from North Side High School in Jackson, Tennessee where he spent the last two years...His parents moved to Jackson from St. Louis, where he had played soccer for two years at Northwest High School...Lettered in soccer, baseball and football at Jackson North Side...Was the placekicker on the Indians football team in 1985...Scored 11 goals and added 17 assists (39 points) in 1986 and was the team's leading scorer the previous year...Has one career hat trick as a prep...Shoots from the left foot...BORN Februaryl, 1969.

7 - JON GOAD Freshman * Midfielder-Forward * 5-4 * 130 Memphis, Tennessee Strong and quick scorer that comes to MSU from Harding Academy, a 1987 Western District state semifinalist...Primarily a midfielder, Goad should see duty at a forward slot...Last year, he scored 20 goals and added 12 assists as the Harding team captain...Was also named Most Valuable Player in the 1987 Regional Tournament...Goad earned All-American honors in his junior year in high school...BORN January 26, 1969.

6 - GREG LOCKS Freshman * Midfielder * 5-11 * 155 Memphis, Tennessee Nicknamed "Shocks"...Was highly sought after by MSU and will battle for the starting midfielder spot this falL.Capatined all four seasons at Memphis Catholic High School, where he tallied 49 4 ~ goals and nine assists in his career...Last year, he scored 17 goals and assisted on four others to lead Catholic into the quarterfinals of the Western District State Tournament... 10-DAVID TAPPAN Senior * Midfielder * 5-7 * 150 Memphis, Tennessee Primarily a midfielder, Tappan switched to defender last year because of the weakness of the defensive squad last year...Is 100% again after suffering a knee injury in 1985...Missed all of the 1985 campaign...Originally from Germantown High School, his family moved to Mandeville, Louisiana where he played one year of varsity soccer and was named to the All-St. Tammany first team...His season stats include 19 goals and 10 assists in eight games...In one game, he figured in seven of the eight goals scored by the team, with 4 goals and 3 assists vs. Salmen High...BORN May 12, 1966.

MEMPHIS STATE ADMINISTRATION DR. THOMAS CARPENTER The President Dr. Thomas Carpenter, who played football at Georgia Tech before graduating from Memphis State, has been president president of his Alma Mater for six years. His appointment as the ninth president of the University by the State Board of Regents was effective August 1,1980. He had previously been president of University of North Florida at Jacksonville for 11 years. Dr. Carpenter, age 61, was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and was educated in the public schools of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He received his bachelor of science degree in business administration from Memphis State in 1949. He went on to receive his master's degree in economics from Baylor University in 1950 and his Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 1963. Dr. Carpenter has 27 years professional experience.serving four institutions of higher education --Florida (1957-64), Florida Atlantic (1964-65), West Florida (1965-69), North Florida (1969-80), and Memphis State (1980-present). Dr. Carpenter is married to the former Oneida Pruette of Memphis, also a Memphis State graduate. They have two children.
CHARLES CAVAGNARO The Athletic Director Charles Cavagnaro, a former sports editor and metropolitan editor of the Memphis Commercial Appeal, took over the duties of Memphis State's athletic director on November 1,1982. A lifelong Memphian, the 46-year-old Cavagnaro attended elementary and high school in Memphis, and received a bachelor of science degree in journalism in 1966 from Memphis State University. Cavagnaro worked as a sports reporter for ten years at the Commercial Appeal, covering all manner of sports stories and dealing with personalities, players and coaches. During this time was assigned to cover Memphis State football and basketball. He served on the Look Magazine All-America Selection Committee, and was a member of the American Legion World Series in baseball operation. After ten years at the Commercial Appeal, Cavagnaro became general manager of a professional basketball team, the Memphis Pros of the ABA, in 1970 and at the time was the youngest G.M. (30) in professional basketball. Cavagnaro returned to the Commercial Appeal and worked in a series of newspaper management positions, including night metropolitan editor, executive sports editor, assistant managing editor and assistant managing editor for the metropolitan desk, a position he held until 1980. Cavagnaro and his wife, Pat, have three children.

MEMPHIS STATE ADMINISTRATION BOBBY KILPATRICK The Spring Sports Coordinator/ Head Baseball Coach Now entering his second year as spring sports coordinator and 17th year as head baseball coach at Memphis State, Bobby Kilpatrick heads the department of men's non-revenue sports. Kilpatrick is known as one of the finest baseball coaches in the country, compiling a record of 508-221-2 over 16 years. He is ranked in the top 20 coaches in winning percentage among those with 200 or more victories. He took over the head coaching position in 1972 replacing Al Brown. His greatest team was in 1978, where his team finished 40-9, led the NCAA in hitting (.357), won the Metro Conference Tournament and advanced to the NCAA regionals. Some of the players he coached at MSU include Dave Anderson of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Charlie Lea, a former All-Star player in the Montreal Expos organization. Kilpatrick is a graduate of Central High School in where he was an All-City selection for three years. In 1958, he led his team to the Tennessee state championship and was named to the All-State team. Following high school, Kilpatrick signed a grant-in-aid with the University of Mississippi and played there for four years. He graduated from Ole Miss in 1962 and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox. Bobby played in the Pale Hose system for four years before entering the coaching ranks. Kilpatrick, 46, and his wife, Georgia, have two children.
TOUCH-LINE CLUB Formed in the spring of 1987, the purpose of the Touch-Line Club is to provide support for the Memphis State Soccer team. This group of 60 members helps with the growth of MSU soccer by sponsoring such projects as providing concessions at the home games (with proceeds going to scholarship fund), underwriting the exhibition game vs. Team Memphis (former Memphis Rogues and Amercians), and serves as a laison between the area soccer community and Memphis State University. Their goal is increase its membership to at least 250 in the future. The president of the Touch-Line Club is Len Gilley, while other officers include Buddy Dickey, Fred Scarpace and John Mulrooney.
